Anchorage Assembly Meeting – Non-Discrimination Ordinance Testimony

You can stream the Assembly meeting live HERE.

More public testimony will be taken on the non-discrimination ordinance.

Chair Debbie Ossiander has stated that there are 250 people left to testify who signed up last week.  88 people were heard then.  Each person has approximately 3 minutes to speak, but people were reminded that all must be heard before discussion among Assembly members can begin.

My understanding is that testimony on the non-discrimination ordinance will begin at 7pm Alaska time (8pm Pacific/11pm Eastern)

Feel free to live blog the event in the comments.  I know many who enjoyed rereading your fabulous live blogging last time.

I will be Tweeting from the event.

UPDATE:  Here is a letter that Pastor Jerry Prevo sent out to his followers.  It answers the question I’ve been hearing from opponents of the ordinance who bat their eyes and say, “Why do they keep using the word ‘hate’ when they talk about us?”  This is why.

**Please forward this to other righteous citizens of Anchorage.**

Dear ABT Email Family,

FOR THE SAKE OF OUR CHILDREN, GRANDCHILDREN, RELIGIOUS FREEDOM, CHURCHES, CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS, WE MUST STOP THIS NEW ORDINANCE IN ANCHORAGE.HOMOSEXUALITY IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE MORAL LIFESTYLE.
IT IS DISEASED AND DEVIANT.HOMOSEXUALS ARE TRYING TO FORCE US TO APPROVE THEIR LIFESTYLE INSTEAD OF JUST ACCEPTING THEM. HOMOSEXUALS ARE NOT BEING DEPRIVED OF JOBS, PLACES TO LIVE OR LOANS. THEY HOLD HIGH POLITICAL OFFICES, WELL-PAYING CORPORATE POSITIONS, AND ARE, AS A WHOLE, IN A HIGHER INCOME BRACKET.

The liberals on the Anchorage Assembly are trying to pass an ordinance to give “special rights” to gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and of all things transgender perverts. Last week we surprised them with an overwhelming number of people there in opposition, but they do not believe we can sustain these numbers. They feel like we are a bunch of wimps when it comes to fighting for what is right. To make it even harder, they have scheduled, in addition to the Tuesday night meeting, as to make it even harder, they have scheduled, in addition to the Tuesday night meeting, a special Wednesday night meeting. I am calling off our regular church service Wednesday so we can overwhelm them again on Wednesday night. This is how important this issue is to defeat.
Below is some general information and BE SURE TO WEAR SOMETHING RED. (blue is their color) – Pastor Prevo

General Information: The public testimony concerning the proposed homosexual ordinance continues Tuesday and Wednesday nights. We need everyone to attend the Assembly meeting at the Lousacc Library. We need to fill up the Assembly Chambers with people wearing red shirts showing their opposition to the proposed ordinance. If you can arrive by 3 p.m., take a seat in the Assembly Chamber Hall. Bring something to eat or drink and a good book to read. Arriving early is important but coming when you can and being present, even outside, is just as important. We need to show the Assembly Members the voters of Anchorage will not tolerate this scourge.

I’m still wondering why all these NON-Anchorage folks think their opinion matters for an ANCHORAGE ordinance? Gah.

If they have enough people to testify, the discussion and vote will be postponed again…and again…and again. Which might be their strategy. At some point, the city council needs to put its collective foot down and say only Anchorage voters can testify.

  65. 66
    Closet MudpupNo Gravatar says:

    Well, I’ll admit – this was fun. Here’s Prevo’s announcement – somewhat revised…

FOR THE SAKE OF OUR CHILDREN, GRANDCHILDREN, INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM, SCHOOLS, AND THE ARTS, WE MUST STOP THIS NEW ORDINANCE IN ANCHORAGE!! “CONSERVATIVE CHRISTIAN” IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE, MORAL LIFESTYLE. IT IS DISEASED AND HATEFUL. BAPTISTS ARE TRYING TO FORCE US TO ADOPT THEIR BELIEFS INSTEAD OF JUST ACCEPTING THEM IN SPITE OF THEIR BELIEFS. BAPTISTS ARE NOT BEING DEPRIVED OF JOBS, PLACES TO LIVE OR LOANS. THEY HOLD HIGH POLITICAL OFFICES, WELL-PAYING CORPORATE POSITIONS, AND ARE, AS A WHOLE, IN A HIGHER INCOME BRACKET.

The Conservative Christians on the Anchorage Assembly are trying to pass an ordinance to give “special rights” to Baptists, Evangelicals, Joel’s Army, and of all things, Witch Hunters. Last week we surprised them with an overwhelming number of people there in opposition, but they do not believe we can sustain these numbers. They feel like we are a bunch of wimps when it comes to fighting for what is right. To make it even harder, they have scheduled, in addition to the Tuesday night meeting, a special Wednesday night meeting. I don’t get how Prevo’s freedom of religion is threatened, unless his religion involves doing wrong to others. Nobody has the “freedom” to force others to act or think or believe as they do or else be ostracized in society. What kind of freedom is that? No one has the right to exercise a “freedom” that requires we acknowledge them as superior and anyone else as inferior.

Prevo’s ego has outgrown his shell by several measures.

Ran into a few friends, and saw a multitude of thankful smiles from people, like us, who had been inside the assembly meeting, and haven’t been allowed much reason for celebrating. Clearly we’re missing a party.

On each side of the healthy sized protest line there was a small group of red shirted antis, that looked a bit dejected and didn’t want to admit that the music, bubbles, and all around good vibes outside were allegedly against everything they stood for.

My cousin, way super smart, has her ph.d in zoology, is a college professor, drives 80 miles a day, 5 days a week, to a less than stellar position for her abilities, so that she can look after her Momma (88 years old, bedridden for the past 4 years). My precious, sacrificing cousin (when, exactly did sacrifice become a bad word?) believes that the greatest love she can give her Momma is to let her ‘live until she dies’ in her own bed, at her own time, in her own place (100 year old farmhouse) and she does this because she so loves her Momma so.

It’s a little depressing to be forced to realize that a significant fraction of our fellows are still living in a pre-Enlightenment mindspace. On the other hand, maybe the ordinance will pass — it is the 21st Century (for many of us, anyhow).

I wish the Assembly would make the speakers prove where they live. I don’t necessarily have a problem with the out-of-towners getting to voice their opinions (however obnoxious), but they shouldn’t be allowed to pretend to be constituents of the people who have to vote.
