Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Is it Over Yet??

David Letterman has formalized his apology to Sarah Palin about the “knock up” joke.  And she was asked if she accepted the apology.

Of course it’s accepted on behalf of young women, like my daughters, who hope men who ‘joke’ about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve.

Letterman certainly has the right to ‘joke’ about whatever he wants to, and thankfully we have the right to express our reaction,” Palin said. “This is all thanks to our U.S. Military women and men putting their lives on the line for us to secure America’s Right to Free Speech – in this case, may that right be used to promote equality and respect.

A wise man once told me that when someone apologizes, there’s only one thing to say.  “I accept your apology.”  But, since Governor Palin does not know the same wise man I do, that’s what we got.

Somehow, the military has come into the equation.  I don’t know how or why, or what war on Free Speech she’s talking about, but I’m assuming that between now and the day she declares she’s running for president, we can expect all sorts of groups inserted into announcements whenever possible.

So, can we please move on now?  And I ask this on behalf of all Alaskans who have grown weary of the drama brought forth every time the governor opens her mouth, which she has every right to do as a duly elected official who was sworn into office based on principles for which we can thank those brave patriots and founders of our nation whose blood was spilled more than 200 years ago to create our Republic and give us the right to vote.

    strangeletNo Gravatar says:

On one hand, I’m a little disappointed in Dave, since he had previously explained rather clearly that the joke was not aimed at Willow, and also admitted that it was, perhaps, a little too edgy.

On the other hand, I think he’s decided to take the high road, and I commend that. It is apparent that the joke offended some people. I personally think a good bit of it is faux offense, but who can tell for sure? And it was personal, not political. And, I suspect that on reflection he may have realized that it was his (or his writers’) error to mistake Willow for Bristol. A formal apology is a way of taking responsibility, and promoting closure.

Of course, the concept of accepting responsibility is rather foreign to Palin; perhaps this explains her accepting the apology on behalf of other people (can you do that? Can I accept that ding-dong DePass’s “apology” on behalf of Michelle Obama? I don’t, BTW).

Anyhow, I expect Dave will be a little more careful in his Palin jokes. Happily (for him, not Alaskans) there is an abundance of mock-ready material that doesn’t involve the minor kids.

I feel just as immature as Sarah Palin; I can’t let it go yet. What makes me angry is the fact that she and Todd ramped up the language using the word “rape,” when that word was not part of the joke. OK, “statutory rape,” also not part of the joke. They implied that Willow wouldn’t be safe any where near Dave. They implied that he was a pedophile.

Look at the angry protesters. Sarah did it again, whipping up her crowd of crazies. Now they are calling Dave “pervert” and “sex offender.” It reminds me of how she riled up those earlier crowds who shouted “Kill Him!” in response to her outrageous claims about Obama.

I know; you’ve got to live with her a little while longer. But she is dangerous, the way that she instills the same kind of hate that we have seen too much of recently: an abortion doctor murdered; a guard at the Holocaust Museum murdered, all the products of other hate mills, all having the same sort of roots. Sarah is very good using her children as props for her outrage (she couldn’t be outraged herself, it was for the children). She is good at pressing emotional buttons instead of talking issues and reason, and she is very good at appealing to some of the poorer instincts of her gullible followers. She ginned up the hate speech in the Letterman dustup, and she is capable of the same thing or worse in the future. There’s enough hate in the world; a good leader works finding a meeting of the minds, at healing instead of picking open old wounds.

Doesn’t the Constitution say something about protecting the rights of the press from suppression by the government? just sayin’

Not that I approve of what Letterman said, but she’s just trying to score points. She didn’t complain about Leno or SNL or Colin Ferguson or any of the others, and she’s the one that brought up her minor daughters sexual habits (unwed motherhood) as a campaign topic after all. She needs to pick a stand and stay there.

If she wants to be a feminist, then support feminist causes. If she wants to support freedom of speech, then don’t attack constituents when they criticize her, which is part and parcel of being a public servant. sigh.

The thing is Palin was tied to McCain then, and do you really think they were going to let her say anything?! We all heard the fake call from the Canadian radio hosts. Been thinking about this whole Letterman fiasco. As Gryphen notes, and I have felt since Pariah Salient was introduced to the national scene last fall, Sarah is a very dangerous humanoid. I think this whole thing was a setup. Of course it didn’t go exactly as Sarah planned, but I think she came to New York with the idea of getting the maximum amount of attention as a result of her visit.

    1. She brought Willow, not Trig or Piper.
    2. She dressed Willow in scanty, inappropriate clothing in Auburn.
    3. She expected Willow’s attire to attract the attention of some late night comedian so she could rant and rave.
    4. That didn’t happen, but she happily used her tired, rehearsed lines when Letterman made any comment about any of her daughters.
    5. The rest is history.

Letterman Resists Making Joke About Palin Wanting Massive Pipeline

One day after apologizing to Alaska governor Sarah Palin about a controversial joke he made on his late-night program, comedian David Letterman has so far resisted the urge to make a joke about Gov Palin’s desire for a massive pipeline, a source close to Mr. Letterman revealed today.

“Here you have the words ‘Sarah Palin’ and ‘massive pipeline’ in the same sentence,” the source said. “If David were to leave that alone, it would almost be dereliction of duty.”

It means: a) I won’t cut military funding if I’m elected, 2) because I invoke the word “military” that means I know something about foreign policy, 3) talking like a blowhard makes us all gooey on the inside, doesn’t it?, 4) I’m an autocrat and you people like being told what to do, 5) remember back in WWII when we were kings of the cr-pheap?, and other things of that nature.

To put it more briefly, it means “vote for me.”

Also, too, I’d like to point out that the ACLU and other civil rights groups has as much if not more to do with free speech than the military.

David Letterman finds humor in Palin uproar as protesters chant

Even as protesters chanted outside, David Letterman started his “Late Show” Tuesday with a Top 10 list making light of his current predicament.

The host has been under fire since last week, when he joked that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s daughter got “knocked up” by New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez during a ball game. He also described Palin herself as looking like a “slutty flight attendant.” The jokes sparked outrage among many Palin supporters and others, who said they demeaned women.

Palin in a statement Tuesday said she accepted Letterman’s apology offered during the show Monday night. The host’s sober message — “I’m sorry about it and I’ll try to do better in the future,” he said — followed a more lighthearted attempt at amends last week.

But the governor’s acceptance didn’t stop several dozen protesters from gathering outside New York’s Ed Sullivan Theater, where “Late Show” is taped. The event was organized by the group FireDavidLetterman.com.

“We don’t believe there’s been any accountability at all here,” said John Ziegler, a libertarian Los Angeles talk radio host who is serving as a spokesperson for the group. “We believe he’s benefited from this.”

Letterman, however, seemed determined to return to his usual brand of comedy. A taping for the Tuesday program included a bit entitled “Top 10 things overheard at the ‘Fire David Letterman’ rally.”

Among them: “We should have done this years ago,” “Well, it was nice of CBS to provide the catering” and “David who?”

I’ve been comparing Sarah Palin to my estranged sister ever since Palin came into the “Big Leagues” at the RNC in Sept. 08. My sister is cut from the same cloth as this narcissistic, shallow, creationist zealot. This has been to my great sorrow, because growing up as Army brats we were inseparable. We were each other’s best friend because we each were the only person the other could count on to be there as we moved from state to state…
I’ve missed her because she’s gone to the far, far right… even to the point where she believes the world is 6,000 years old despite the fact she had the same education I had. And she’ll scream and yell if anyone contests it.

My sister supported Palin wholeheartedly from the onset, but according to my mother has certainly stopped doing so because Palin is too full of hate and her own sense of self-worth for even my sister to stomach. Now we see, after this response to Dave’s sincere apology, the depths Palin will descend into. Rather than accept Dave’s heartfelt apology (from a comedian, not less–The least apologetic people on the planet because it’s their BUSINESS and DUTY to push the envelope!), Palin doubles down and drags the military into the fray for some obscure reason. Sounds like, rather than close the chapter on this event, Palin wants to segue into some other topic to stay front-and-center (big surprise). She’s treated her children as political tools, now she does the same to our armed service???

I guess what I’m saying is: I’ve been comparing Palin to my sister because they’re a lot alike. But the truth is, my sister is more mature than Palin. She’s better. Even if my sister is still an ultra right-wing conservative evangelical creationist, she would have the manners to accept Dave’s truly sincere apology and move on. And my sister was in the Army, to boot. If I know my sister, bringing the military into this stupid kerfluffle would just piss her off. If nothing else, Palin has taught me that maybe it’s time to reassess my relationship with my sister after many years of distance. Because as difficult as my sis can be for me to relate to, after this flap between Palin and Letterman, Palin has shown me she’s a lot worse than anything I can attribute to my sister…

Why am I sharing this? Because maybe I want to understand what happens when the far right alienates the far right… Maybe someone can explain this. It’s profound.

That’s why this situation is so relevant… even my sis would stop after a point. Sarah Palin herself was “knocked up” before she got married. remember that story she still tells about her and old Todd “eloping” to spare her parents the expense of a wedding. Did that ever strike anyone else as an odd story, as she could have had a small, very inexpensive wedding. Well, the truth- which Palin has never admitted, came out on August 29, 2008 when John McCain stood in Dayton and announced it was his 72nd birthday- whereupon Sarah Palin chimed in that it was her and Todd’s 20th anniversary.

Do the math. Go to Alaska Court records and type in Track Palin, and you will find that his DOB and the above August 29 date means that Sarah Palin was 6 weeks pregnant when she “eloped to save money.” And for those who wonder if the baby was early, don’t. She has always maintained her first born was brought to full term, and 6 weeks early would have required the ICU. The NY Times did report this information during the campaign, BTW.

Then, Palin’s dad was describing how he and the mom got married during the summer of a year in the local Catholic Church. Check the records. Sarah Palin’s older brother was born “early” relative to the wedding. This fact is compounded because, at least at the time, the Church considered this to be a sin.

Ask Sarah: When is she going to tell the truth about what “knocked up” really means in her family, and why is she still lying about everyone but the teenager in her family?

    ________

You are correct and while normally it would not matter to the majority of people whether or not Palin or anyone in her family was “knocked up” prior to their marriage since they did actually get married, (well except for Bristol and the only reason she isn’t married is because Palin and McCain lost the election…you can take that to the bank)…BUT, Palin has professed this continued “family values” ethos like it was some badge of honor bestowed up on her because of her beliefs which she not only “walks the walk, but talks the talk”. It is all BS.

She is one who has a core set of beliefs, tells everyone how proud she is of those beliefs, how she sticks to them, and darn everyone who criticizes her because of them, when the reality is she has a core set of beliefs that sound good on paper but which she just cannot bring herself to uphold in reality.

Dave’s 10 ten was hilarious. He takes the steam out of their embarassing protest. I am sure he is just getting started.

Plus, I think comedians are a band of brothers that won’t take this lightly. Wait until Sarah WANTS attention from Dave and other late night comics.

    Hey, Right Reverand ~

What you wrote made me choke up. It is so unfortunate when siblings who were close take such divergent paths. No one can really urge you to do one thing or another…you have to go completely with your inner voice.

Sometimes estrangement means a lesson in letting go, sometimes it means a lesson in gathering together, tolerance, humility or who knows, something else. I wish you well in your struggle. You have not been given a problem you can’t solve….you WILL eventually know what the right thing to do is, and be at peace with it.

    Right Reverend

Remember we only go through this life once….I think you will be able to mend those fences. Remember too that children are involved and it is just as important for them to learn the importance of family bonds and how to be able to reconcile, forgive, reunite and love! Fingers are crossed for a reconcilation for you and your sister.
