Open Thread – Fun at the KBYR Studios
What a fun evening! I went to live blog the Shannyn Moore Show in the KBYR studios. Rishi, her producer, met us at the door with a giant cherry cheesecake.
I had a heck of a time trying to establish an internet connection, and Shannyn eventually relinquished her laptop to me. Then she asked me if I wanted to be on the air in the second hour. After my blood pressure stabilized, I said yes.
I think it went pretty well, although I don’t actually remember anything I said. I do know that Mudflatters called in from everywhere, including our very own ServerGuy from Japan! Shannyn liked his voice so much, he’s going to record a greeting for her answering machine!
The time went fast…in fact, it was a total blur. Probably a combination of the sugar from the cheesecake, washing it down with some crazy strong coffee, and the adrenaline. And to top it off, we had a rainstorm the likes of which is seldom seen in Anchroage. There was even thunder and lightning, a rarity in these parts.
After the show, we took a quick tour around the station so I could snap a couple pictures. During the week, it’s the home of uber-conservative right wing radio….but on Saturday it gets smarter.
What can I say? This sign in the bathroom off the studio struck me funny. Don’t forget to flush!
An iconic representation of a radio station and a moose.
You can write your own caption for this one!
The wall o’ wingnuts. What’s the difference between Laura Ingram and Dennis Prager? Lipstick, apparently.
And why is Sean Hannity wearing those yellow boots?
After the fun, I went to Shannyn’s place for a little celebration….truffles and Zinfandel. Nice.
You can read the live blogging comments on THIS POST, and listen to the podcast HERE.
(Find Shannyn Moore, and then click on the Fast Forward button which will scroll you through the dates of the show. Keep clicking until you find 6-27. I come on in the second hour.)
Use this open thread to talk about it, or whatever else you like!

You sound as is you had a fun time. I’m going to try and listen to it now.
Love those boots. (Hannity, not so much)
Thanks for the link to the show.
Love the “iconic Brian” photo, and Brian with the tea bags is pretty funny, too!
Great show and a very quick two hours. I thank all of you, the AK-5, for all you do. (And, I think the Open Thread idea has made a big difference. Guilt-free posting on the OT, and much easier to read comments now on the topic threads.)
Thanks for the behind-the-scenes tour! When I saw Brian with the tea bags, it reminded me that the “tea baggers” were supposed to have another gathering on July 4th. This was announced when the first Tea Bagging was going on, but I haven’t heard a thing about it since, has anyone else? That first one was such a flop, there hasn’t been a mention of another one, that I’ve heard of.
I can’t get the podcast to play for me. Is anyone else having problems with it?
It was quite a night. You were wonderful on the show…nerves didn’t show at all. Now I have voices to go with all my favorite blogmasters/mistresses except Gryphen…you,Shannyn,Phil, and Celtic Diva all in the same night!
Is Brian being dipped by statue guy and is Brian wearing his high heal hoofs?
Which podcast is which ?
04-18-09, 04-25-09, 05-02-09 – are these dates or do they relate to the timing ?
I’m confused (nothing new there then)
I added instructions in the post. It is confusing… AKM

Insomnia is a terrible thing. Been awake since 10am yesterday…too tired to sleep and way too cranky. Why couldn’t I stay awake like this when I was young enuf to party like a rock star?
Siren, you click on the right arrow to bring the date to 06-27-09. I’ve done that and then it seems to take a while to download. After that it just won’t play for me!
I had some luck with letting it play for 3 seconds, pause, and then hit play again when you have about 111 mins up

noy sure what my plans are for july 4, mr. terps may have rehearsal part of the day.
if we go anywhere public, i have half a mind to bring signs that say something like “i came to celebrate, not denegrate, my country” but not wave them unless someone waves something teabaggy at me. :
i’m sure you mudpups could come up with some other, yea better, sign ideas.
i really don’t like the idea that they would hijack july 4 for a polital purpose, and i hope that idea has been abandone
Aha ! Thanks Irish – found the right date and it’s playing OK for me (at least all the ads are so far)
Re: Missing Shannyn’s show Podcast and iTunes From their FAQ on podcasts
-Not in the Store? Not a problem..
If while surfing the web, you ever come across a podcast that you can’t find in the iTunes Store, here’s an easy way to subscribe to it anyway. From the Advanced menu, choose “Subscribe to Podcast…” and enter the podcast feed URL. iTunes will subscribe you to the podcasts and begin downloading immediately.-
This would benefit people who miss the show, but want to listen later and not have to be on the computer to do so.
Finally…I have spent hours at this. In the end I switched to Explorer from Firefox and bingo. I’m listening to Shannyn now.
HistoryGoddess,
How does one figure out the podcast freed url?
Ok, I’m not getting it either. What right arrow, Irishgirl?
yum, what a nice pic of the wine and chocolate! you guys did great, I had to hit the hay before Phil came on, dang……is there a way to hear what he said?
WakeUpAmerica,
To the right of the play button. Or you can press the left one and it takes you straight to the right date.
I found out that clearing my cache and history on Firefox makes everything work on live feed or podcast just fine.
Did everybody pick up on why the toll free # doesn’t work for them? Apparently, the toll-free # only works within the state. The rest of us call the local # area code first. If you have cell phones with free long distance or land lines with free long distance, that will work too. My favorite picture was of the yellowboots under Sean Hannity’s picture. AKM, Brian is a natural-born subversive!!
Historygoddess, where does one find the advanced menu? I guess I need a step-by-step tutorial.
Those boots would probably be very handy if ever Hannity should show up at The Mudflats with his neocon vitriol as he would have to slog his way out after being cast into the mudflats. What he really needs are magical boots that can purge his sick brain.
“During the week, it’s the home of uber-conservative right wing radio….but on Saturday it gets smarter.” Thank you for bringing light to the dark places.
Irishgirl, I must be seeing something different on my computer. Using Firefox, to the left and right of the play button, the arrows only start a podcast that is already displayed. I’m using Firefox.
I sure hope no one desecrates the iconic picture of the representation of a radio station & Brian………..Moose uprising!!!!!
Good morning, mudpups! Loved listening last night; you and Shannyn are wonderful together. Glad Travelin’ Brian could hang out with you (no puns about tea bags, heh heh). And I got to hear the infamous Warren-
It’s beautiful here; if we get at least .10″ more of rain this month, we’ll beat the record set in 1882. El Nino is our friend- trying to end the drought that began in 1999, one drop at a time.
AKM,
You sounded terrific with Shannyn. I only got to listen to a little bit of it but it was masterful.
Perhaps a future venture? A permanent gig? Your adoring public wants more! Congrats to you and Shannyn!
WakeupAmerica, I just pressed those arrows to change the date. I was using firefox and was having no success so I switched to Explorer and it started straight away. Listening to AKM now.
Couldn’t help but laugh when I saw the “Fox Radio” symbol. Wink. Giggle. Go girls!
Anyone know if Dr. Chill is doing okay?
Scarah really needs to lose the bible talk……..
I hope after seeing the reality of wounded soldiers, she’ll grasp the seriousness of war. This is not a game. She plays with other lives when she says stupid things.
I still want to know if she violated any military rules by what she said to the national guard. She is careless, reckless and inexperienced.

Yeah – The toll free # was confusing for the last couple of weeks. From here , it would say it was a “non-working # “. Glad they made it clear last nite. I ended up using the local # a couple of weeks ago. Chickened out right before Shanynn took my call.

Alaska has some of the best legislative ethics laws in the nation, according to a new report on financial disclosure from the Center for Public Integrity, a non-profit watchdog group.
“That’s not what you would think,” said a somewhat surprised Rep. Beth Kerttula, D-Juneau, noting the numerous and ongoing federal investigations of influence buying in the Alaska Legislature.
In a report called “States of Disclosure” issued last week, the center gave Alaska’s disclosure laws a B grade.
Alaska tied Texas as fourth best in the nation, behind the three states with A grades.
“Much of the enforcement, she said, comes from the public calling her staff’s attention to errors in submissions.
“The public is the best watchdog we have,” Hill said.”
here’s your chance AKM, Shannyn, Prog. Bloggs and all Alaskans. Weigh in.
The Center for Public Integrity ranked Alaska’s ethics laws as fourth best in the nation. Do you believe that’s an accurate assessment?

I agree, although the New York paper skirts the real reason for her vulnerability as a presidential candidate. Sarah Palin’s problem is her character.
Hiya AKM-
Yeah I have watched Rachel Maddow for a long time and feel she is the best host on TV_ But the funny thing I noticed when reading mudflats (one of the main reasons I hung around) was that your style of writing is strikingly similar to the way Rachel expresses. Your little asides and the way you build up to a story- have a similar cadence to hers (or hers to you- whichever way the shoe slide onto the foot).
You and Shannyn should go further with the show- or expand beyond it, the chemistry is obvious.
Asta !
Although we have plenty of sweet cherries around here, I heard an ad for Washington State cherries on one of the KBYR shows last night so I bought a couple pounds at the store while getting the sunday paper this morning.

How long with the MJ stuff? Do you think it’ll end after the funeral or do we have to grieve as a nation for months? I can see wall to wall coverage for maybe a day or two, but we’re into Day 4 now. It’s getting a little old.
Nanny from the U.K. is weighing in with some bizarre facts, like he “hid” money under rugs and in trash bags around the house… MJ’s mom called her to ask where all the cash is.

Podcasts on iTunes info-
The “advanced” button is on the top toolbar. From there you can subscribe to a podcast by putting in the URL for the podcast. Unfortunately, Shanynn’s show does not have a separate URL that I can see. Maybe she can get that listed.
On the right side of her page http://shannynmoore.wordpress.com/ she lists podcast and podcast archives. If I clicked on each podcast, I can easily download into RealPlayer. I have a separate little mp3 player I use for non-iTune things, so perhaps that is what I will have to do until I can get a separate URL. For Rachel Maddow’s Green360 radio show, I just iTuned it once, and I just have to hit “get more episodes” right from the iPod and I don’t have to mess with using a computer. Maybe someone with more knowledge would know how this would work with Shannyn’s show. (BTW-When I clicked on the different podcasts, the URL didn’t change on the radio website.)
I, too, was not able to scroll to the most recent podcasts using Firefox. Explorer worked fine, though. Go figure.
Just listening to George S. on the TV. Axelrod was on first. Grassley (R) is on there now giving an opinion. Boy… when those ‘ R’s get all upset and indignant they sure seem to repeat the and put the ‘ bi-partisanship ‘ into the sentence as much as possible when they can. Even multiple times in the same sentence… like we didn’t hear it the first time they said it.
Sort of like ‘whining ‘…. and saying the President doesn’t like our ideas and won’t use them… wah… wahh.
Other people ( S&M)… use the word ‘ special needs child ‘….
I saw another tea party advertised by Burma Shave-like signs the other day in Wasilla, and was told the big ado in the park last night might have been another one.
If these folks are really unhappy with their government they should haul their backsides down to local government meetings, armed with specific suggestions as to how to amend the language of the ordinances or proposed ordinances they so disagree with, write letters to the editor, contact their state legislators, articulate their particular concerns to their congressional delegation, or even contact the appropriate federal departments or office of the president. Standing out in the park yelling in often inaccurate, often purposefully inflammatory generalities to their choir out of earshot of any reasonable person in a position to effect change doesn’t seem like a very constructive way to get what they want.

Highly recommend everyone read not only this article but also the comments which follow.
Note how Andree has commented a few times. At this point in time, a few of her comments have dozens of “recommend” votes while her detractors (gotta love those personal attacks) have just a couple.
Andree has a very good point about Kris Perry – has anyone challenged Perry’s paycheck collection during the relevant time frame?
Andree is off target, imho, to criticize Ericson “and his ilk” for not speaking up sooner. Instead, she should welcome the similarities in her message and his, and embrace his corroboration of her efforts. Her complaint appears political, and as we all know, too much focus on the political results in no substance. Use his article to your benefit, Andree. He’s saying the same thing you’ve been saying for much longer. Get him on your side instead of alienating him.

Nan~ That cannot be a person who is a Palin fan. If you click on their name/avatar it takes you to their other posts and all are opposing Sarah. I think that the avatar is a joke or some snarky attempt to make fun of those who support Palin. The “recommended” number that shows is how many times that post has been given a positive rating. No number of “abuse reports” are ever shown. If enough people hit the “report abuse” button then the post simply gets hidden until the ADN folks look at it to see if it is okay or not.

I was helping my sister doing some work at this Pet Clinic spay/neuter that they are opening up. It is a non-profit and were looking to get their supplies and equipment for the clinic, specifically maybe a washer and dryer. She told me about this Yahoo Groups ‘Freecycle Network’. I have no experience myself so I can not speak to how they work. Here is the link…. and their Motto.
———————————————-
http://www.freecycle.org/
“Welcome! The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,770 groups with 6,922,000 members across the globe. It’s a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It’s all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer (them’s good people). Membership is free. To sign up, find your community by entering it into the search box above or by clicking on “Browse Groups” above the search box. Have fun!
————————————————–
Has anybody joined one of these and had good experiences..? Keeping stuff out of landfills is good. Every little bit helps.
The one comment that she had to me was that she ‘ thought ‘ some people browse the website or sign up for ‘ alerts’ and run around with a truck collecting stuff.. for resale or something (hard to stop that and people who abuse the purpose ) Because someone had a dryer posted and when she called the Giver said someone showed up within 10 minutes after posting it. Coincidence… maybe.
I’m thinking about signing up because you always have garage style stuff (a few pieces here and there ) during the year you might want to get rid of and it’s too much trouble to do a garage sale for a few items. Or you replaced something… and need to dispose of the older one, but it still worked. Someone who had ‘nothing ‘ would be happy to get it
Has anybody heard of them…Pro’s and Cons…?
EyeOnYou says: Seriously why is anyone giving this guy a platform to speak at all?
I am with you 100%…only to add that I don’t understand why ANY of these types have a platform. I guess just like a car accident gets an audience, so do they….show me the money…it’s always about the money, the attention, the fame, etc. it’s a real shame, it’s never about the truth.

Oh good, I’ll go pack. Born in Detroit & lived there until 1953. Edison Ave…..home of Henry Ford (he lived on Edison). Edison Ave. was just off Woodward Ave. near downtown. Family lived in Corktown. Oh what a place it was!! Yes, very sad what happend.
for those who want to see where their state #’s in regard to ethics reform….
here is a map, mouse over your state to see the rating and grade, click on it to see the questions asked each state and how your state rated on each question.
http://www.publicintegrity.org/investigations/states_of_disclosure/rankings/map/
Sarah is using a phrase “sacrificial soldiers?” This is exactly equivalent to saying soldiers are “cannon fodder!” Does she know what she is saying? Usually politicians are more cunning and deceptive. She wants to be president?
BTW……questions are given a 1 to 5 point, so you can see the weak and strong areas…..all the points added up grades your state.
I think we all have a duty to encourage state legs to strengthen ethics laws in every state. agreed?
Honesty: I posted info on Free and Cheapcycle groups during the last Red Shirt Hatathon in response to an AKM posting of some charitable giving. I suggested this was one way folks in need can meet those needs without having to go to charitable organizations.
I’ve used both (free and cheap) a few times… it’s neighbor to neighbor for both needed and no longer needed items. People will post something like: FOR SALE: Used washer, runs great, $20. Or NEEDED: Twin sized bed for child. Then, neighbors hook up via email and make the transaction.
If people are going around with trucks collecting stuff to sell, it’s contrary to the original mission/spirit of being neighbor helping neighbor.
I haven’t been over there in years, but it was a great experience when I used the sites… one neighbor was giving away TONS of flowers and other plantings, another had JUST the right sized cafe curtains for an odd sized window, etc. The neighbors were all really nice and we’re using it again soon to get rid of some of BF’s things (juke box, ping pong table, etc.)
Hope this helps!

Congrats, AKM, for breaking thru on the airwaves.
honesty, where is your sis located?
HonestyinGov: I’m a member of our local Freecycle group. I was consolidating 2 average-sized households worth of accumulated stuff into my new, far more compact home, and am still slowly finding stuff to give away. It works quite well, from a donor’s point of view. There may be some unscrupulous folks trolling the boards, but the donor has full control of who gets what. Sometimes it’s a competition–who can write the most convincing or even most humorous note as to why they are most deserving, but other times you just want something GONE!
Give it a try, I find it worthwhile…
I think freecycle is great, I don’t use it because I live in the country and don’t want strangers coming to my house. My daughter has used it in town. What your sis should do is put her needs on it.
She can post on craigslist also, many times people sell stuff inexpensively there. It’s free to post.

While he was unpacking, Young discovered a videocassette, according to the book pitch. Hunter had been hired by the Edwards campaign to videotape the candidate’s movements, but this one is said to have shown him taking positions that weren’t on his official platform.

They have website set up and are planning to open in about 3 weeks. The website has a lot of info and their costs. About half of what Vets will charge. Trying to help lower income people who still need the services but don’t get their pets fixed because of the high cost. Thereby adding to the unwanted pet population. I was there yesterday helping out a little.
I’m going to try to update some of their computers. A business man was nice enough to donate some Office stuff to them last year when an Office closed.

It’s been reported that he was hit on the head during a flight that busted a tire upon landing on Saturday (day before). No one’s sure if that has any impact on what happened early today, but it is awfully co-incidental, time wise.
Re: Free stuff…craig’s list has Free stuff listing, tons everyday and even where ever city you are in…also too, local free papers, penny savers, advertiser, etc have free listing to.
I will have to check the link there, I think its very cool idea.
Sometime people will leave out side their homes a desk, washer, stove etc and place a FREE sign on there. Usually the item is gone within hours. I think it kind of cool, recycle type thing

War on Poverty indeed. Think what would have happend if he had been our Democratic candidate?

Re: Say NO to Palin in Politics- I’m glad you contacted the radio station. I hope you put down your city and state as well. I really want them to know how wide spread her audience is. I would think that would both impress them, as well as make them do whatever it takes to keep her. That would/should give them some advertisers to put on their website front page and looks very desperate.

I live in Phoenix, AZ and have followed Shannyn Moore both on her blog, “Just A Girl From Homer” and in her posts at Huffington Post. I am now a regular listener and have called in to her show on your station. There are a great many listeners not only from Alaska, but also from the “lower 48″, Canada and other countries as well. As avid fans of Shannyn’s we would like to see her given much more air time. Her talent and competence are an asset to your station, and her knowledge of culture, history and issues in Alaska are much more impressive than Fat Eddie Burke in a red t-shirt proclaiming his bigotry and “rascism”. If I was interested in promoting my state, I know which of them I would choose. Thanks for a great show. Sharon Alexander
I tuned in to Shannyn, then got a surprise when Mudflats came on. You were terrific. Such a wide spectrum of supporters. Hope you return for another show.

Hunter is a videotographer……..Also , a character in one of …..dang ……..can’t remember his name…….books is loosely based on her. Wild ass , coke snortin’ , critter of the nite in NYC. By more than a couple of accounts , Hunter was quite the player in the day.
Samper – forgot to add – The Hangover definitely has more of an “arty” feel to it as well. Not just juvie humor. Great reviews everywhere, comparing it to some great films even.
Seagull: Cool! Will check it out!
Phoebe: Edison, Firestone, Ford and one other dude (will try to find the link) were all best friends and used to take road trips together, etc. I bet he had something to do with the naming of your street! Ford was very powerful back in the day… naming a street would be a small thing for him.
My mom reminisces about Detroit’s grander days as well… Folks are trying, but pulling out of the recession is #1 here. Tidying up the City is #2. Maybe do both at once… HIRE folks to TIDY UP the City!

I bet the fourth dude was Luther Burbank. I live in Santa Rosa, CA near Burbank’s house & there are pictures of the “Big Four” there. Last year I did a lot of genealogy stuff & kind of relived by relatives past. Boy, would I like to live near the Burton Historical Museum. The “Ruins of Detroit” is a really interesting website. Depressing, but interesting. It’s funny but people think it can’t happen near them, but it’s happeing here now. I can see all the signs.

ACK! have had good fairy on left shoulder and bad fairy on right shoulder for hours, arguing as to wether to click on that story or not
Good fairy – “don’t do it!, it’s nasty and nosey.
Bad fairy – “go on – look – you know you want to”
Good fairy – “no don’t, it’s a car wreck, sleazy”
Bad fairy – “what! so you’re a saint now?”
Bad fairy won.
One comment, if I were Mrs. Edwards I would be more p*ssed that I was married to an idiot than a sh^g merchant. You can put bromide in tea, you can’t put clever in the stupid.
crystal said: “Sometime people will leave out side their homes a desk, washer, stove etc and place a FREE sign on there. Usually the item is gone within hours.”
LOL, that’s what we did when remodeling three 70′s style bathrooms……and we live in the country, lol…..just put it out by the road with a free sign on it.
One day a person stopped to ask if they could have 2 old tubs (not claw foot) just one regular enamel chipped steel and one molded plastic (not cast iron, ugh) they were sitting out in a pile of stuff we were pulling out of the woods behind the house (missouri’s landfill, sigh) anyway, they were gonna bury them and plant invasive things that need to be contained, like mint and raspberries, pretty clever, huh.
someone else wanted the old truck topper to provide shade for their goats, they set it on 4 sunken poles, cheap protection from the elements, and recycled junk!
someone else was gonna use the old kitchen sink for cleaning fish outdoors.
I only wish we’d gotten our metal hauled in before the prices dropped last summer, missed the boat on that one, but it cleaned up a lot of rural MO, which it really needs.
Now that vintage is becoming such a big thing, we could have sold those robin egg blue toilets and sinks, lol.
Phoebe: I’m on detroityes.com. Home page pic is of the demolition of the Hudson’s building. I remember going there as a little girl. They would dedicate one floor of the building as a “parent free zone” so kids could buy their parents Xmas gifts (they always just HAPPENED to cost EXACTLY as much as our little hands would hold out!). Of course, they could NEVER pull such a thing off today! Kids and Parents separated in a Dept. Store? NO WAY!
Also, too, my Granny worked there… she went to work the day after being married and hid her ring in her purse so they wouldn’t know she was married. She was afraid of losing her job because it was the Depression and married women were considered “taken care of” by their husbands.
UK LADY: How was it? Should I peek? I’ve got Good Fairy all over the place here, but Bad Fairy is rearing his head.
Samper – LOL, nothing explicit, just saying that an aide saw a tape. If true Edwards is a real d*head.
Hmmm, Maureen Dowd kicks butt: GOP butt (including a reference to SP)!!!

Genius in the Bottle
By MAUREEN DOWD
WASHINGTON
As in all great affairs, Mark Sanford fell in love simultaneously with a woman and himself — with the dashing new version of himself he saw in her molten eyes.
In a weepy, gothic unraveling, the South Carolina governor gave a press conference illustrating how smitten he was, not only with his Argentine amante, but with his own tenderness, his own pathos and his own feminine side.
He got into trouble as a man and tried to get out as a woman.
He wanted to get his girlfriend a DVD of the movie “The Holiday,” presumably the Cameron Diaz-Kate Winslet chick flick about two women, one from L.A. and one from England, who trade homes and lives. He was fantasizing about catapulting himself into an exotic life where stimulus had nothing to do with budgets.
With Maria, he was no longer the penny-pinching millionaire Mark, who used to sleep on a futon in his Congressional office and once treated two congressmen to movie refreshments by bringing back a Coke and three straws.
No, he was someone altogether more fascinating: Marco, international man of mystery and suave god of sex and tango.
Mark was the self-righteous, Bible-thumping prig who pressed for Bill Clinton’s impeachment; Marco was the un-self-conscious Lothario, canoodling with Maria in Buenos Aires, throwing caution to the e-wind about their “soul-mate feel,” her tan lines, her curves, “the erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of night’s light.”
*snip*
The Republican Party will never revive itself until its sanctimonious pantheon — Sanford, Gingrich, Limbaugh, Palin, Ensign, Vitter and hypocrites yet to be exposed — stop being two-faced.

Yeah…what she wrote!

Re: Billy Mays’s death: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_obit_billy_mays
“Billy Mays, the burly, bearded television pitchman whose boisterous hawking of products such as Orange Glo and OxiClean made him a pop-culture icon, has died. He was 50.
Tampa police said Mays was found unresponsive by his wife Sunday morning. A fire rescue crew pronounced him dead at 7:45 a.m. It was not immediately clear how he died. He said he was hit on the head when an airplane he was on made a rough landing Saturday, and Mays’ wife told investigators he didn’t feel well before he went to bed that night.”
I have faith that things always come out, rarely do they stay hidden. And even those so devoted and willing to cover up, also come forward with the goods, lol. When they wake up and take off the rose colored glasses, most don’t sit on stuff forever.
“Young says that his belief in Edwards ran so deep that he agreed to take the fall for the candidate, inviting the pregnant Hunter to live with him, his wife, Cheri, and their three children. Later, after Hunter delivered the baby, Young and his family moved to a different home in California.”

Hudson also lived in the Boston Edison District. I remember shopping at Downtown Hudson’s & their chickenpot pie & Sanders & the Thanksgiving Day Parade & Boblo & Palmer Park…………how bittersweet!! Think many Irish Catholics moved from Corktown to Boston/Edison in the early 1900′s. …mine did.

On Saturday the Rev. Jesse Jackson said Michael Jackson’s family wants an independent autopsy to determine the cause of the King of Pop’s death.

It’s funny “old Detroiters” were always out & about. So when I was young we went to all of those old grand hotels. A few years ago there was a Renaissance in old Detroit & things were coming back…even Corktown, but I ‘m sure that recession has put a stop to all of that.
I think that Queenie doesn’t have the complete market on narcissism….John Edwards is a close second. I used to think the media was being a little hard on him….for once they may have been right.
SayNo: Also, too, I heard they don’t want to wait for the Coroner’s official report and want toxicology run through more quickly than the City can do. They can achieve quicker answers going independent now that the City is done with the body.
Seems like all reports point to drugs – painkillers.

Anyone who runs around thumping their Bible and declaring “FAMILY VALUES” who then cheats on, leaves, or otherwise knowingly and purposely HURTS said family should be called out on it and made to face the music.
Look at what McCain did to HIS family! No one says a word about it, though.

HonestyinGov, I have a friend in CT who has used Freecycle quite a bit. She has given away some great stuff she no longer needed, and gotten some great stuff in return. She suggested I sign up here.
Think the whole MJ fiasco is a little weird. The Jackson’s are so ready to blame his personal doctor, but apparently he’s been a zombie for about 10 years. He’s been alienated from his family for years….is there no will to provide for his three children & where they should go? I don’t understand all the adulation for a life poorly lived.
BTW, Louisianna is currently ranked #1 in ethics reform. But, it’s not clear if it’s working. So just like Scarah can claim she reformed AK ethics first thing in office, if the proof of effectiveness isn’t there it’s just a piece of paper that isn’t enforced. And beware any 6 month waiting window clauses!
this is interesting, just this month in LA
http://www.la-par.org/article.cfm?id=268&cateid=2
PAR says public records bill would stifle open government
“Two bills introduced this session, which would have opened most of the governor’s records to the public, are all but dead due to strong opposition from the administration. Instead, the administration supports SB 278, which purports to move Louisiana forward in executive branch transparency but would actually deliver a devastating blow to open government. SB 278 should be rejected. The amended bill was passed out of the House and Governmental Affairs Committee yesterday.
Louisiana law currently protects from public view all records (except financial) within the office of the governor. SB 278, as amended, would narrow current law to a degree, but would also create new problems. Records within the governor’s office, which relate to the governor’s security and schedule, intra-office communications of key staffers and the deliberative process, still would be restricted from public view. Questions remain as to which specific documents would be protected under the new exception.
I love OscarMadonna and BrianChild. You guys are just silly.

Funny thing , in the NYT , some finance guy crunched the numbers , and he’ll be worth more dead. He spent money like crazy , and now it can pile up again. By all accounts , he was keen at the business table…….the personal spending and the poor choices with boys was a whole different story. They should have the funeral in London , that way all the people can still “see him” and the promoter can get off the hook for ticket refunds.
In MJ’s case, what is going to happen to those three children that are not his biologically? Will the mother of the older two surface and demand to take them back? Will the sperm donor of third child or the surrogate mother surface and make any claims on the child? Will these children have the legal right to inherit MJ’s fortune? I predict lawyers and court fights that will probably come to past with the Jackson family and parental rights concerning these children.

re: Freecycle
there is a group on Yahoo for this. You do a search on your hometown and it will give you the proper group. I have used it well to get rid of stuff. People will take anything free, just about. And I never try to give away anything that’s really junk. However, there are plenty of things there, to find, too. It’s a great way to reuse/recycle. I got rid of 16 bags of returnable cans and bottles (we have a bottle bill here. 5 cents each) The guy was so happy to get them and I was even more happy that I didn’t have to go turn them in. I gave away a ton of spring flowers, two dressers, a small drafting table, some planters, etc… It’s such a bother to try and sell them and with Freecycle, they’re gone the same day in every case.
I highly recommend it. You can also post if you “want” anything. I’m currently looking for a kayak. I also have some other stuff that needs to go, I just need to get it in order!
so there.
Don’t let the politicians tell ya otherwise people, if they’ve got nothing to hide, they’ve got nothing to be afraid of. And if Scarah wasn’t blurring the lines then spending big bucks to find loopholes and whoever will protect her she wouldn’t be having these ethics complaints.
She did have back tax issues, per diam issues and child travel issues. All of which had to be investigated, straightened out and paid. She has violated laws, she’s just gotten around being “found guilty”, making settling and twisting arms.
I still say Arctic Cat has teeth. And her appealing to exempt Toads financial info, from what I’ve read is an ethics violation. The spouses income info is supposed to be disclosed, it’s required. She signed the disclosure agreement. Betchya that’s one of the new complaints.
Public Access Is Key
Peggy Kerns, director of the Center for Ethics in Government with the National Conference of State Legislatures, said government transparency is becoming an increasingly important issue in public policy circles and the current trend — generally speaking — is for states to beef up their financial disclosure laws. But Kerns, who was a state legislator in Colorado for eight years, also told the Center that unless the public has easy access and knows where to find information, disclosure laws are just an empty gesture.
“Financial disclosure is the first step, but that is the bottom line as far as ethical standards,” she said. “Then, does anybody care that it’s disclosed, does anybody look at the information and connect the dots?”

)
MI is 48th in Ethics Reform, evidently.
So what? We catch a politician doing “bad” and they are tried and gone in a heartbeat. None of this walking on eggshells with “complaints”.
ON MJ: I can’t believe he didn’t leave a will! He owns part of the Beatles Collection, for God’s sake! Even if he died penniless, that in itself is worth like a billion, I heard this week. I believe I also heard he left it to Sir Paul, which is only right. That said, there are a million conflicting reports out there now. One thing for sure: He ran his business life into the ground by his spending. If you don’t have $100K per month for RENT, you shouldn’t get to build that debt just because you are MJ. I don’t think anyone EVER has said “No” to him since he splashed on the scene. Big Mistake!
As for the kids: The Family will probably make the (valid) point that any of these other biological parents are complete unknowns to the children. To force the children into the custody of strangers will NOT be in their best interests. Also, too, the kids will have a say. They are all of an age to express a thoughtful opinion on who they want to live with.

That B rating was for Financial Disclosure Statements.
Alaska ratings for ethics is at 40th out of 52.
Ratings for FOIA is also at 40th.
Freecycle at work today: A woman asked for a ‘puter monitor for her son. I recently replaced/upgraded mine. An hour later her and her son came and picked it up. Perfect result for both parties!
I wonder if anyone can translate the twit’s latest tweet, specifically what she means by “reconciliation.” Also, “it shall be manifested.” Is the “it shall be manifested” spoken by God or GINO?
“Thank you Wasilla for Trail of Healing! May God bless efforts of reconciliation; it shall be manifested in more respect for AKs First People”
I am also trying to find how effective these FOIA requests have been or at least if someone has a database with an ‘ average ‘ as to how quickly the States actually turn over the info. If certain states can do it in a week or less if C. Diva is told it will take weeks or longer, that is a problem. GINO and her friends can’t just
say ‘ that’s how long it takes’. If certain States can do it… so should she.
Here is a webpage with a lot of tabs on left side. It might be helpful for people who are good at digging up the truth. All those ‘ Sherlock Holmes ‘ types…. Me not so much.

The states, for the most part, followed the federal government in adopting open records laws.
Unfortunately, state FOI laws have proven to be almost uniformly weak and easy to undermine. The weakness and haphazard construction of the state laws has resulted in an information gap that significantly effects the citizenry’s ability to examine even the most fundamental actions of government.
In the case of MJ, has the children been in touch with the Jackson family and are familiar with them? From my understanding MJ had not been particularly in close contact with the family. It would mean that the Jacksons would be strangers to the children too, if this is true. I could be wrong.
Lor in LA,
I read the tweet to mean that if the villages starve to death or get their fish stoien by rich Seattle pirates, then it is God’s will, and that if they don’t join the evangelical model of worship, like that practiced by the group she references in the previous two tweets – trail of healing – they will be damned to hell for all eternity.

I think MJ kept his children away for his family. Think he had serious issues with his father. Sad situation.
oh, here’s that let me take off my gov hat thingy, she’s 24/7, she should have never in front of press said anything, she should have known better and just said I can’t make a public statement as Gov. how I plan to vote, it would not be appropriate…….but no. Yet another one of her puppet string blunders.
there is a lot of good reading on this site.
“If the American people or certain states want citizen legislatures, then that is their business. We’re noting that if you do that, you better make sure you have controls in place and disclosure in place ensuring that people wearing more than one hat do their job properly. And what we’ve found is, that’s not the case.”
Q: What is the importance of disclosure?
A: State lawmakers are important people. They need to be held accountable. They are major-league politicians with minor-league systems of ethics. Sunshine is the best disinfectant everywhere, including in state legislatures. You cannot know too much about your public servants.
We knew that it would probably be quite stunning when we looked in legislatures, but I don’t think anyone thought we would find as much self-dealing and conflict-of-interest situations as we did. And it makes us look twice outside the Beltway, around the heartland, and realize that some of the most outrageous corruption in politics today is not just happening in Washington, it’s happening in states all across America.
It’s time the citizens and the media in the states paid a little more attention to the state lawmakers. Legislators are dealing with multi-billion dollar budgets and issues that affect our daily lives and they have become more important in some ways than members of Congress. It’s time we paid them the kind of scrutiny they deserve.

Lori: I wonder if anyone can translate the twit’s latest tweet, specifically what she means by “reconciliation.” Also, “it shall be manifested.” Is the “it shall be manifested” spoken by God or GINO?

LOL, let’s ask Meg.
Vaughn……thanks for the clarification! sounds more like it.

That B rating was for Financial Disclosure Statements.
Alaska ratings for ethics is at 40th out of 52.
Ratings for FOIA is also at 40th.
You know, I think we should just go ahead with endorsing a State religion. I’m sick of this; it’s too difficult.
Let’s make it easy. We all need to convert to that brand of evangelical Christianity, start attending, say whatever we need to say whether or not we believe it, and be done with it. We’ll all be righteous by that standard and fit for duty.
We can have that specific brand of religious training to our kids in school and we can secretly correct them later in the privacy of our homes.
Yea! The puritan days are back!

Ethics laws, no matter how well written otherwise, are a laugher as long as the Gov gets to appoint and fire those charged with investigating ethics complaints filed against him/her. The AG position needs to be removed from the political spoils category and made an elected position so that the AG serves the people rather than the governor. Then, let the State Supreme Court appoint the Personnel Board members, and the Senate Judiciary Committee confirm them.
Philip Munger @ 162
I think your interpretation is far more accurate than she’ll ever admit. As I recall, last winter she was much less obtuse about the need for Native Alaskans to flow into hungry [cheap labor] markets.

Her verbiage is getting scarier and scarier – I thought she was narcissistic, but now she’s sounding like an insane megalomaniac.
I just realized that the image of a rubber-plastic Brian being held by a metal statue is an example of the product of some sort of mixed marriage. Don’t tell Prevo, mudflatters…

New experience with the religious right. Yesterday, our 8 year-old asked if I believe in “the end of the world”.
I didn’t know what to say. Our kids used to ask if we believe in God and are we going to heaven.
This little guy is hearing about Armageddon from his peers on the playground.
So we had a conversation about global warming, stewardship of the planet, the possiblity of asteroids hitting the earth and what kind of control human beings have over that. That didn’t satisfy him, ’cause what he really was asking for was reassurance that we are ‘righteous’ and qualify as the Chosen, or something.
Whatever. I’m so over it. “No, sweetie, we’re not. We’re going to burn in a fiery hell and don’t tell anybody that we have gay people in our family.” “We also have drunks, drug addicts and child abusers who’ve done terrible things, but they go to church now, so it’s all fine. We’re not ‘Righteous’, but they are!” (Just make sure that you stay with me at all times when Uncle Billy the Youth Pastor comes to visit.)
Parents, do me a favor. Please stop encouraging your children to use their religious superiority as a stick to beat other children with. That just ain’t Christian.

I think MJ allowed at least his mother access to the kids. All reports are that he adored his mom. I thought he was close to Janet as well?
Someguy being interviewed said the reason MJ covered them from head to toe in public when they were WITH him was so that they could go out in public WITHOUT him (movies with a friend, for example) and not be recognized/photographed/harrassed/etc.
Pretty lucid thinking from someone of questionable scruples otherwise!

Is it more evidence for Religiongate if Palin is “officially tweeting” religious messages?
Okay, I just turned on CNN whose station should be called CnnMJ.
They are on the BET Awards Red Carpet – YEA.
Have to ask this question as I’m still catching flies with an open-mouth.
CNN interviewed Taraji P. Henson (Benjamin Button) on the red carpet as they have totally changed the show into honoring MJ, which I understand. My HUH moment was when Taraji made a comment “Michael was such a big star, breaking barriers and that it was because of him that Obama was able to get into the White House” – HUH
Am I missing something as I don’t see this. Sorry I’m not trying to be insulting, but had to ask other opinions.
If I don’t close my mouth soon, I will have eaten enough flies to not have to cook dinner.
Supposedly one of the Jackson Family members is to be at the awards.

samper – I love it !! Just went out and fired up the grill. Seriously. A friend was high bidder on a pig at the Rodeo and guess what’s for dinner ?? Shorts , flip flops , t – shirt……no problem. And of course a ice cold Lonestar beer………
austin: do you really see that when you go outside?
CN: That was just an ignorant comment by an ignorant celebrity. To be honest, besides announcing the London Tour, I haven’t seen/heard much about him at ALL in the past maybe 2 years or more. And the London thing wasn’t really SUPER BIG TIME NEWS because he wasn’t hitting the U.S. stages. How much influence could he have had on ALL American Voters?
And, frankly, as nutty as MJ was, I’d hardly take his political advice. Nor would most rational, thinking adult voters.
MSNBC, which I leave on all day, actually broke from ALL MJ ALL THE TIME to air Meet the Press. They also did a really good “Legends” on Farrah, who is all but ignored for MJ.
Funny… you can tell on both the FF and MJ “Legends” documentaries that they were done a while back, stopping abruptly before reviewing the last X amount of time. Then, the commentator comes on and says “She valiantly fought the cancer, but in the end, the cancer won.” Or it could have read “Even though she valiantly fought the cancer, in the end, it was the car crash that killed her.” DUH. Two sentences to sum up a year old documentary!
Ed McMahon, who died Tuesday? Not a word on him!

Holy mackerel, if that is what her tweets meant, that should be grounds for censor from the legislators at the very least. That is a basic right on which America is based.
austintx,
A whole piggy? Doesn’t that take a long time to cook? As in Ribfest type pulled pork sandwiches — droooollll!!
Samper — I agree. Love porky ribs and bacon!! And my new find last year was as Ribfest – pulled pork sandwiches — droooollll!!
crystalwolf – Dinner’s quite boring actually. If I eat much more chicken, I’m going to grow tail feathers!! It’s only chicken in a mushroom sauce over rice. One of those cook in one dish things. I cook cause you have to eat. Not something I have ever had a flair or patience for.
Thanks for the opinions.

yes it is Nebraska!
As for the what’s for dinner part of this thread, I just sliced up some fresh-picked zucchini, fresh-dug sweet onion, chopped Roma tomato. Also some Mrs. Dash Tomato-Basil-Garlic blend. Liberal drizzle of olive oil and vinegar, and an even more liberal splash of red wine.
All wrapped up in foil and ready for the grill (where is will steam next to ribeye steaks over mesquite coals…)
Farmer…. I fixed pork chops and apples on the grill tonight…the apples turned out really well– in foil with butter cinnamon and brown sugar. I’m thinking Martha Stewart has some competition with us…

@Nebraska…we prolly should post our grilled fruit/veggie recipes over in the forum’s recipe thread. I took a “before” picture, will take an “after” when it’s ready. Was going to add a yellow summer squash for extra color, but ran out of room. Next time! BTW, the apple & pork chops sound really good!
@who me…this is the first time I’ve done this (just made up the recipe a few minutes ago). It’s not even on the grill yet and it smells wonderful!
redwoodmuse…your hubby’s jambalaya sounds great!
mr. justafarmer (having just read the last few dinner posts) wanted to to point out that he PICKED the veggies for tonight!
BTW, the red wine is one of those cheapie gallon jugs. We use it for all sorts of cooking and it just sits on the kitchen floor next to the stove. I opened it tonight and it hissed….well on it’s way to a nice red wine vinegar!
Handcut sweet potato fries with the pork chops. Spinach salad with Paul Newman Raspberry Walnut dressing. Garlic bread. More Lonestar.
mmmm, austin!
I’m having a fantasy that we all get together for a massive cookout with each of these dishes on the tables!
austin, do you heat up the raspberry walnut dressing? By heat up I mean on the stove or grill, rather than straight out of the jar. Warm it up a bit and it’s amazing!
Wouldn’t that be fun???!!! Love sweet potato fries, but I am so lame, I buy the frozen ones and deep fat fry them… ***blushing***
Heat up the drsg??? Sounds “wicked awesome” to quote my New Hampshire friend.
justafarmer – thanks…….gonna try that !!
ok, Nebraska’s mention of apples reminded me that there are still some red seedless grapes in the fridge (not homegrown, sadly, but…)
I tossed about a dozen grapes into the marinating veggies. We’ll see how that works out.
austin, I was at a hotel restaurant in Chicago-area a long time ago (back in the 80s) and their signature salad was spinach with warm raspberry-walnut dressing. When you mentioned your spinach salad and the Paul Newman dressing, the awesome flavor came right out of my memory!

You aren’t alone in the frozen sweet potatoe fries!!
Had the fries at a New York State county fair at least 20 yrs. ago. Loved them. But, this is where Canada is lagging behind the States. It was only last year that we could finally buy them (frozen) in supermarkets, at least in Ontario. In restaurants they look at you like you have two heads if you asked!!
Love your fairs! Same story on Elephant Ears or fried dough. Obama stopped at one (Beaver Tails) of the very few places that sell it here when he was in Ottawa.
Wow, I vote for a massive cookout. We obviously have folks with really good taste here. The raspberry dressing reminds me of my favorite salad – never any left — fresh spinach leaves broken/torn, handful of dried cranberries (craisins will do- I get mine from the health food store), drained mandarin orange slices, generous handful of crumbled gorgonzola or bleu cheese, toasted walnuts broken into largish pieces. Plate and drizzle with Annie’s Raspberry Dressing. Heaven on Earth. Not quite as good, but a close second is spinach with fresh crunchy pears, diced, toasted walnuts, gorgonzola cheese, dried cranberries and raspberry dressing.

Oh redwood… that salad sounds absolutely perfect! Love walnuts and blue cheese/gorgonzola and craisins… especially when the walnuts are toasted! Have a three day weekend coming up. major menu planning going on in my head now!
Have you all tried Maytag bleu cheese? Oh my. I buy it every now and then when I am pretending to be wealthy and cost is no object.
(sorry, just got back from seeing Rent.) About the radio contact. Mine didn’t go through either, apparently. I clicked on one of the advertise here buttons and that same form/contact appeared. Explains why there are no advertisers on that page? I found another e-mail to jmcdonald at (call letters) dot com. I sent this:
I am very impressed with Shannyn Moore’s show. Her show last night with AKMuckraker was especially good. Lots of great callers from AK, the lower 48, Canada and even Japan. Good, thought-provoking topics and intelligent conversation make me want to listen to her more. Is there a chance she will be getting more airtime? I would certainly be tuning in.
Also, would someone be able to please post the podcast URLs for just Shannyn? If I knew the URL for her show, I would be able to subscribe to it through iTunes.
Finally, I have tried to e-mail using the form on your website, but the message doesn’t go through. It says the mailbox is full. It is the same form one gets when clicking on the “advertise here” button. If you haven’t had businesses reaching you through the website, that might be why.

Okay, just ate and I gotta brag about Mr. Redwood. At the last minute he decide to put shrimp in the jambalaya (with rice) instead of Italian Sausage. Then, in an inspired move, he served it with a sprinkle of salted peanuts and coconut (like on curry.) Man, oh man. Good on it’s own but the crunch of the peanuts and the bit of sweetness from the coconut….wow! I love being married to a great cook!

You have my complete sympathy. I hope you at least have some kind of farmer’s market nearby!

Love the food comments.
I just had grilled shrimp – I marinated them in the juice of a lime, a teaspoon of grey poupon, and a nice drizzle of olive oil – and some beautiful fresh green beans steamed with just a little naughty butter.
You should try a salad with chunks of smoked salmon and maytag blue cheese and toasted pecans. Yummy.
Dipnetting starts in 12 days – time to fire up the smoker and smoke that salmon. I’ll bring some to the cookout!
@Mis Demeanor…
grey poupon….you elitist, you!
All the food sounds simply delish! I come in with the southern cooking. Fried cabbage and okra, corn on the cob, lemon chicken and cornbread muffins. I so most of the cooking but Mr. califpat is much better at cooking fish and seafoods.
that is “do”

Thanks, Nan–guess I used it too much when it was new. Farmer’s market 1X per week, Saturday morning at 6:00. Totally uncivilized…
justafarmer:
gotta go for the gusto, I guess.
On special occasions I marinate them (the shrimp) in a little Jack Daniels.
Really good, believe it or not.
Grilling because of the heat wave today – a wonderful 68 degrees. WOOOOOO!
Has anyone else seen the Dish Earth channel on Dish Satellite lineup?
It has a great way of putting things in perspective, especially when the stars are shining behind our beautiful planet. Mother Earth indeed.
@Miss Demeanor, anything marinated in Jack Daniels has to be good.
@Jim, sorry your local farmers market is uncivilized. At my market, we have folks showing up at 5 am…I refuse to show up anytime before 8 am (usually later…)
The market is civilized enough, but 0600 is definitely NOT! For nearly 30 years I had to get up at 4:30 to make it to work by 6:00. Now that I’m out of the rat race for whatever reasons, I no longer need to, so I don’t. Other desert rats feel differently, so the “good” stuff is gone before I can get there…
absolutely agree with you Jim…
a few years ago, another farmer & I decided we would try to get to the market before one particular farmer (spots at the market are first come, gets the best spot…she would show up very early and sleep in that back of her truck having snagged the “best” spot)…
we eventually beat her by showing up at 4 am.
Did it once, congratulated ourselves and went back to reasonable hours.
BTW, our market “officially” pens at 8 am, but too many farmers show up before dawn. Completely silly…
pens=opens
My Saturday farmers’ market opens at 6, but I have never graced it before 10, except in my student days, when it was like, WTH, still awake, might as well hit the market before the buzz leaves me and get some breakfast stuff. That was many years ago.
Re Say NO @ 36 – I posted my opinion at the JE, but it was moderated. Kinda skews the totality of opinions, doesn’t it? I’m sure I am not the only one whose comments did not appear.
Back to the what’s for dinner discussion…hubby wanted me to mention desserts!
He is particularly proud of the dessert he made for tonight:
some sort of really luscious store-bought bundt cake, which he sliced and layered with ice cream, chocolate sauce and strawberries (multiple layers)…put back in the freezer overnight.
Messy but DELICIOUS!!!
I agree wholeheartedly that Jack Daniels makes an excellent marinade for seafood. Especially with fresh lime juice.
Harry & David’s choco covered cherries are, imho, overpriced and overrated.
Those truffles look like they come from Modern Dwellers Chocolate lounge! –Oooh yum!
bye the way, drooling over all the food talk!!! Life should be enjoyed over a great meal. As I wait for my daughter to finish her fresh rhubarb bake for desert!
Mr. Justafarmer…that sounds really yummy. Mr. Redwood and I had a crepe shop for a while. Our favorite messy dessert (Mr. R’s specialty) is 25 or 30 crepes layered with (pick one) homemade custard cream and strawberries, fresh blackberry jam, nutella, custard cream with lemon zest, chocolate ganache, custard cream and drained mandarin oranges with a chocolate overlay etc. Put it in the freezer til frozen solid. Take out and thaw just enough to cut without breaking knife. Serve. Goodness on a plate. Amazing and oh, so, yummy.
my mouth is watering, but I’m going to have my favorite cheater’s dessert instead…plain good yogurt with a handful of chocolate chips. Good for my bones and I get my chocolate fix.
redwoodmuse
Just finished my southern down home meal. Yum!!!
redwood, those crepes sound wonderful…I’m having some leftover truffles from last night and then heading off to bed soonest
Guess this is a private party. I’m gone!
oh, califpat…don’t leave!
<<<<passing a plate to califpat!
All the food talk got everyone hungry… even Sarah Palin went shopping.
http://thisisphotobomb.com/2009/06/26/photobomb-that-guy-have-a-nice-day/
and califpat, pass me a plate of that frred cabbage & okra!
waiting for my okra to be ready to pick…might be another month…
HAAA! love the smilie face on that butt, sauerkraut!
U.S. beef recall expanded
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090628/hl_nm/us_jbs_beef_recall
I don’t want to spoil your party, but this is really something that everybody should be coming down hard on the federal government about. It’s disgusting that you’re literally being sold sh*t.
We had a dept. store chain here in Detroit, JL HUDSON’s, who was eventually bought out by Macy’s. It and Jacobsons (fancier) were THE places to shop back in the day.
Anyway, JLH had a restaraunt in their stores that served up the MOST delicious Maurice Salad. It had a bit of everything (ham, hard boiled egg, choppped pickles and the usual salad stuff). But the BIG SECRET to making the salad super yummy was in the dressing!
At one time, I had the recipe… I think it included raw egg, which made it a little scary.
Then they BOTTLED IT for us!
Oh, joy of joys! Haven’t had it in YEARS, but I think the Macy’s Marketplace still carries it here in Detroit.
I’ll have to look that up.
NOW look what you folks have done! Sent me on a quest for my favorite dressing in the world! I think it also has to do with the Mommy and Daughters with Granny along shopping excursions that were kind of “tradition” with us. We’d always stop for lunch at Hudson’s. And, when we were REALLY young, they had really cool kids meals served up in a kid sized shopping bag with all kinds of stuff in it (besides the hot dog or burger and fries).
Can’t wait to share my first “real” souvlaki in Greece with Brian! Talk about MEMORABLE! There is just something about getting a food where it originates that thrills me… Souvlaki in Greece, Pasta in Rome, etc.
Since this is the open thread……..
Those truffles look so yummy and I bet they went down well with the Zin.
I am watching reruns of Deadwood and just watched the scene with Jane losing it over Bill getting killed. What an awesome actress she is. …she had me in tears and I had already seen it! I love that show and will never understand why they just ended it.
Carry on…….
hahaha samper!
thanks everyone for the massively delicious foodfest tonight.
off to bed for me now…
The Palin Pride Poem (adapted);
Twas an evening in October, I’ll confess I wasn’t sober,
I was carting home a load with manly pride,
When my feet began to stutter and I fell into the gutter,
And a Palin came up and sat down by my side.
Then I lay there in the gutter and my heart was all a-flutter,
Till the lady AKM, passing by, did chance to say:
“You can tell a Palin that boozes by the company she chooses,”
Then I got up and slowly walked away.
Sorry Mudpups for acting Sarah Palinish (head handing in shame). I promise never to act that way again. I heart you guys and of course you all can have plates of fried cabbage and okra, corn on the cob, and cornbread muffins. You can also have a peice of my delicious home made banana pudding. Again I heart you guys!!
New tweet from the twit:
In Anch. I’ll cont to work on Dept of Defense to fund soldiers’ trip home. Unacceptable to hear AK troops’ flts aren’t fully covered by DoD
7 minutes ago from TwitterBerry
She’s HOME! Hey AK…your gov is back home and twittering!
Re my previous post:
Does she have any influence on the DOD funding? Just asking… I’m guessing the flights aren’t fully funded due to policies and procedures from our previous admin. I’m off to do some research.
AND, is this the first she knew of this? Seems to me as the Governor of AK, she would know that there were issues here. Curious to know if she has ever commented on this before. OK, I’m being snarky a little, but ..whatever.
Next tweet:
I may get nowhere w/DoD efforts to fully fund troops’ rtn trips so pls join charity drive to raise $ for flights. Nonsense troops must pay!
26 minutes ago from TwitterBerry
I guess someone told her shad had no control so now she is trying to cha and do some rallying. Hahahaa!
shad-she (oops!) cha=change
Do I smell home made banana pudding? Where is it? Come on — no hiding it!
Where is it? Out with it!!! I can smelllll it!!!
seattlefan,
The thing is — why did it take her so long to learn about the flights. She is the State Commander-in-Chief aka SCICINO
I’ve heard about it for at least a few years from watching News
Yes, yes Canadian Neighbor, you smell luscious delicious banana pudding and I am sending you some. Hope you enjoy it. And a plus is that it is sugar-free. Enjoy!
Hi CN…..That was my question.
I don’t know if she knew before or not. I’m sure she didn’t. I have been trying to find info on the policy but not having much luck. I have heard that this has been an issue for a few years so her tweet is kind of telling…..huh?
I guess she got a couple of stamps on her passport and learned a thing or two about what is going on with our troops. I can’t even do a “lol” on that because it just makes me sad that she is in charge off a state and doesn’t know anything about the world she want’s to govern in.
Numm – Sugar Free? Even more interesting.
Cousin’s daughter is special needs and her diet is as close to sugar free as we can as there is not the selection of sugar free foods in stores here as you have there.
This body I haul around can use sugar free too!!
She’s always bragging about being Commander in Chief of her National Guard… how could she not know they are not funded to come home?
Besides that, it seems REALLY BIZARRE to me that they would be serving in Kosovo or otherwise and could be “trapped” away from home if they didn’t have funds to get back. It just doesn’t make sense to me. They bring back folks all the time… the National Guard can’t hitch a ride with folks already on their way home? Something is not right with this story.
Was it SAYNO who brought up Rep. John Conyers’ wife’s bribery charge here in Detroit? Was just getting the headlines and in 90 days, she’ll be sentenced to at least 3 years in a Federal prison. Asked if our Gov thinks John should resign, she was firm in saying that it would be an unfair request. I agree… if HE hasn’t done anything wrong, why should HE lose his job?
I bring this up because Palin was so quick to ask for a resignation of AK’s duly elected rep when good ol’ whatshisname had his conviction overturned. I just sat there with the “jaw on floor, WTF” expression when she suggested that. Why in the world would someone give up their JOB just because their opponent was let off on charges due to technicalities (not necessarily innocence)? Likewise, why would a husband give up the family’s only income because his wife (soon to be “ex”?) chose illegal behavior?
DID YOU GUYS HEAR???? General Electric is moving part of their operations to MICHIGAN!!!! Wahoo and YIPPEE for us!!
We need diversification here badly. The whole “all eggs in one basket” thing has really hurt us, when at one time we had no concerns at all about the auto industry supporting most of the state. Google moving in was a great start. Now, we have GE!!!
Grandholm also said that we will take prisoners from ANY state (AK and CA were specifically mentioned) and house them here to keep folks in their jobs and make a buck or two. Just recently, she told Arnold S. that we would take their CA prisoners if they pay us appropriately.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but CA has a prison “crisis” going on? Overpopulation? Trying to build new prison(s) without funds?
yep, Seattle, that’s about the sum of her power……BS
she may be waking up to it.
Samper,
From what I understand is they fly military back to bases in U.S. It is the domestic flight home that they get hit for.
PS: There is probably no worse punishment for a “bad” CA native than having to spend a few winters in MI! LOL!
While a CA Native wouldn’t know what to do in our winters, that first snow fall of the year is ALWAYS a gorgeous site, and we love it here in the Winter Wonderland (it used to say that on our license plates until we changed to Great Lakes State), regardless of the snow. Just like AK’ns, I suppose!
I used to hardly wait for the first snow and work of the snow MACHINES (the things that make snow, not the vehicles) to kick in for ski season. Until a broken ankle and back injury… no more skiing fro me.
The religious tweets and religiongate really bother me. I would say someone in Alaska should do ethics complaints but what good would that do.
What else can be done about this!? She is one scary person. Separation of church and state is so important as we all know!
I sure wish some ‘ Medical Professional ‘ would look at and analyze all these tweets that she thinks are important and tell us what they mean. She definitely has some sort of a disorder. Like everything else… it is so ‘High School ‘ mentality and not healthy. Her EGO thinks she is so important that everybody wants to know where she is at all times and what she is thinking. Only people on two of Her fan sites care… NO ONE else does. It is so pathetic and I have to say those Kids are going to be really screwed up when they grow up. It’s sad.
Is it then the state’s responsibility to get THEIR OWN National Guard back to the home state? That’s just a tad more palatable than leaving them in Kosovo, and might make sense since they aren’t officially Fed DoD.
On the other hand… if the Feds are using the NG, they should be responsible for door to door delivery of said NG troops.
I don’t know… I’m not a military person… but if states are then responsible once they hit US Soil, fine. Palin is just going to have to crack open that checkbook and quit whining about it.
If she “didn’t know”, then she is stupid, considering her CinC position and all.
Honestyingov I know exactly what you mean. She does have a big character problem but it’s so much more than that. She is so full of herself! Narcissisic, egomaniac combined with extreme ambition and a sense of entitlement. She is dangerous. I really wish more people who worked on the McCain campaign would open up. Interesting tidbits have leaked out but they don’t want to lose their careers. If she lasts until the Republican 2012 primary though, she will be shredded by her opponents! But I am hoping she is exposed before then in a huge way.
samper,
I don’t know whether a search on the DOD site would say anything. The only other thing I can think of is speak to say a recruiting office as the only reference I found on a quick search is dated 2003
I think CN is correct in that they are responsible for their domestic flights once they get here. I could only find links that were related to that. Here is one:
http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Soldiers+on+leave+must+pay+own+way+home+to+Oregon-a0113825938
This is dated 2003. I truly believe whatever policies are in place have been so since Bush was in charge. Palin may just be learning about them.
We have all heard the stories in the news about this.
Good on her if she wants to take on the DOD and fix that problem. I’m not going to hold my breath . Congress and the Senate can’t fix that shiot, so I’m guessing a clueless “rougue” governor with red heels can’t make a difference. (I can’t wait for that photoshop).
Glad she had a nice field trip and learned a lot about “stuff” and got her passport stamped a few times. She gets to check off meeting an “important person in a foreign government” so I’m guessing she is feeling pretty good tonight. Hahaha!
2500 showed up to a candle light vigil at the original home of Motown Records Sunday night. AKA “Hitsville USA” is now a museum and still includes the studio where the Jackson 5 recorded in their earliest years.
Janet Jackson appeared at the BET shindig on behalf of the family. Vows to keep his legacy alive “forever”.
I hope that doesn’t mean we have to watch wall to wall COVERAGE “forever”.
seattlefan,
The sad part is — I knew and she didn’t. I’m a regular citizen in Canada. She’s a Governor and Commander of the National Guard of a State. I don’t have a relative in the military — She does
seattle: Perhaps… but meeting that “important person in a foreign government” is kind of overshadowed by the way she presented herself, the State of AK, and the U.S.A.
I mean, come ON! Who wears a ponytail and gray t-shirt to meet foreign VIP’s???????
Little Miss Fashionista really screwed up on that one! You don’t insult our troops and you don’t insult foreign dignitaries by showing up like you were just out gardening and washing the car!
Well, if she’s so concerned about their flights home, she should just have the state pay for them and be done with it.
She’s not going to get anywhere with the DoD. Policy is evidently not that big a deal, since I don’t recall it ever being challenged before.
Also, too, is this just for when they are on R&R or at the end of tour? If it’s R&R, in some ways it’s reasonable to expect that their vacations home are partially funded by themselves.
My employers have never paid for my vacations.
@Samper: You are definitely right about a Native Ca. not knowing what to do with your winters. (Except for the Ca.’s living up in the mountains where winters get kind of brutal.)
I have been in Ca. since 1974, coming from Saint Louis, Missouri, where winters get pretty bad. But I realize now that I could never stand the winters of Saint Louis again. My body is older and has adjusted to the mild weather of California and even though I grew up in the Midwest, I would not survive in Michigan or Missouri during the winter. Talk about envirnmental adaption, it’s definitely true.
Anyone still paying attention to the photoshops being done on Palin?

Canadian Neighbour…
You are so right. It is unbelievable this woman has any semblance of knowing what she is doing or what she is supposed to be doing. I try not to dwell on her shortcomings, but after the Letterman thing and her Kosovo Field Trip, I am totally on the offensive. She has NO clue on governance and has no right to represent AK or the USA on foreign soil. I take offense and am embarrassed.
My Dad served in the Korean War and my brother served during the the first Gulf War. I lost 2 cousins in the VN War. I guess she is just getting an idea of what it is like to have family invested in our country. I am a liberal and I fully and completely support our troops. I always have. I don’t need to take a field trip to Kosovo or send my son off to war to finally “get it”.
Oh my…I think I just made a rant….sorry. She pizzed me off today.
Off to bed.
Or this one which really kind of freaks me out.

califpat: I lived in CA for a couple of years. My mom had moved there prior after growing up in PA and MI all her life. She made SUCH a stink when the temp dipped below 60, it was annoying. You’d think she was raised in Tahiti or something the way she went on about “how cold” it was!
OK… Just read the article on the flights home. Seems NG troops want to fly home between training and deployment. All well and good. They have a couple of weeks off, can get mom to bake an apple pie, whatever.
The argument is that military aircraft can NOT be dedicated as a personal transportation service, but if there is a flight already going with room on it, they can take one of those flights.
I’ll have to agree with the military on this… They can’t take planes out of service just to shlep folks around domestically. They are not only very expensive to operate, but they are also there for a reason: authorized military activity. Sending a bunch of folks home for vacation who haven’t seen a single minute of combat isn’t where I would like my tax dollars spent.
Absolutely, however, once in combat, door to door services should be extended. After all, they have SERVED our country.

LMAO! Thanks for that. I needed a laugh.
I’ve seen hundreds of them at this point and that one is one of the best.
New open thread up! A Barbaric Poll…. Forgive me.
What? You mean SP wasn’t washing cars in Europe? The fact that there are photos of the nitwit dressed like that with REAL leaders won’t help her image with the normal, non-religious wingnuts. Like the majority. What a dolt.
EyeOnYou: The link in #305 is good!!
Seattlefan:
I agree. I also agree with your last comment as it made me look at the clock which I wasn’t paying attention to — time to hit the hay!! Sneeze!!!
Pleasant dreams Mudpups!!
Eye On You: GOOD ONES!
Where is the outrage NOW? Now that she made such an issue over CD’s photoshop, people have gone above and beyond to the extreme.
Not a word from Palin.
@Canadian Neighbor: You are so right. This woman has never learned anything about etiqeutte, history, geography, civics, government, English or tolerance. She is an absolute horror to the political scheme of things and the horrid part about is that she is not even aware of her deficits.
My condolences on losing your cousins to the war but they are truly heroes. I was a little more fortunate because my father, my husband, five brothers, all served in various wars and they survived. I, too honor and support our troops and do not need to go to Kosovo to get it.

I’m pretty sure she’s never washed a car in her life. It would be so “beneath” her!
I had a second cousin who was blown to bits in a famous seige at Khe Sanh, Viet Nam.
Did alot of research on his “life & times” because the family really didn’t have correct answers.
The search led me to a bunch of vets who knew him, told me the whole story, etc.
They are real heroes… the guys who took pieces of bodies and bagged up their friends to go home.
One guy profoundly says, “No man should have to go to sleep with the blood of his friend on him”.
Realize that VN was an ugly place to be… no showers, clothes literally rotting off their bodies, living in the dirt. NOTHING like what the troops have today. Thank God the simple basics are more than fully met for today’s troops.
I don’t have to go to Kosovo to “get it”, either. What is WRONG with that woman!?
Samper: The woman needs a psychological evaluation, seriously!!
And as far as your Mom is concerned, I give her a giant high five concerning when the weather gets below sixty degrees, I start turning on the heat and covering up. My body does not remember the freezing temperatures of Saint Louis.

Which is just more proof that this whole episode had nothing to do with the picture itself and everything to do with finding something that they could twist into an attack on Celtic Diva.
Had this in any way been about the photo, they would be screaming bloody murder about the photoshops that the guys at Something Awful has done. There are 10 pages of photos over there, and they get more hideous as time goes by. There was also no mention of those on Wonkette or any other blog either.
This was nothing more than an attack, a deliberate attack on Celtic Diva.

Now this is funny!!. Looks just like Eddie Burke!!
samper-DH was in Vietnam, door gunner on a helicopter.Having grown up as the eldest of 10,he had been an avid hunter, his mom would wake in the morning to find deer gutted and hanging on the back porch.
At the end of his tour in Nam,he had to spend time on a detail packing body parts and bodies into nets slung under helicopters to get them to a central point.
He never hunted again.
CG–Oh puuulllleeezz, Moller doesn’t live in Juneau…

Sorry to have missed all the fun food talk last night, but I was grilling sockeye salmon steaks and making homemade ice cream with our youth group and a youth group from Kentucky yesterday! Fun was had by all!
sounds like a fun time! Listened to Shannyn’s show, as usual and enjoyed very much.
