Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Open Thread – Fun at the KBYR Studios

What a fun evening! I went to live blog the Shannyn Moore Show in the KBYR studios.  Rishi, her producer, met us at the door with a giant cherry cheesecake.

kbyr10

I had a heck of a time trying to establish an internet connection, and Shannyn eventually relinquished her laptop to me.  Then she asked me if I wanted to be on the air in the second hour.  After my blood pressure stabilized, I said yes.

kbyr9

I think it went pretty well, although I don’t actually remember anything I said.  I do know that Mudflatters called in from everywhere, including our very own ServerGuy from Japan!  Shannyn liked his voice so much, he’s going to record a greeting for her answering machine!

The time went fast…in fact, it was a total blur. Probably a combination of the sugar from the cheesecake, washing it down with some crazy strong coffee, and the adrenaline.  And to top it off, we had a rainstorm the likes of which is seldom seen in Anchroage.  There was even thunder and lightning, a rarity in these parts.

After the show, we took a quick tour around the station so I could snap a couple pictures.   During the week, it’s the home of uber-conservative right wing radio….but on Saturday it gets smarter.

What can I say?  This sign in the bathroom off the studio struck me funny.  Don’t forget to flush!

kbyr7

An iconic representation of a radio station and a moose.

kbyr5

You can write your own caption for this one!

kbyr4

The wall o’ wingnuts.  What’s the difference between Laura Ingram and Dennis Prager?  Lipstick, apparently.

kbyr2

And why is Sean Hannity wearing those yellow boots?

kbyr1

After the fun, I went to Shannyn’s place for a little celebration….truffles and Zinfandel.  Nice.

You can read the live blogging comments on THIS POST, and listen to the podcast HERE.

(Find Shannyn Moore, and then click on the Fast Forward button which will scroll you through the dates of the show.  Keep clicking until you find 6-27.  I come on in the second hour.)

Use this open thread to talk about it, or whatever else you like!

Great show and a very quick two hours. I thank all of you, the AK-5, for all you do. (And, I think the Open Thread idea has made a big difference. Guilt-free posting on the OT, and much easier to read comments now on the topic threads.)

Thanks for the behind-the-scenes tour! When I saw Brian with the tea bags, it reminded me that the “tea baggers” were supposed to have another gathering on July 4th. This was announced when the first Tea Bagging was going on, but I haven’t heard a thing about it since, has anyone else? That first one was such a flop, there hasn’t been a mention of another one, that I’ve heard of.

-Not in the Store? Not a problem..

If while surfing the web, you ever come across a podcast that you can’t find in the iTunes Store, here’s an easy way to subscribe to it anyway. From the Advanced menu, choose “Subscribe to Podcast…” and enter the podcast feed URL. iTunes will subscribe you to the podcasts and begin downloading immediately.-

Alaska has some of the best legislative ethics laws in the nation, according to a new report on financial disclosure from the Center for Public Integrity, a non-profit watchdog group.

“That’s not what you would think,” said a somewhat surprised Rep. Beth Kerttula, D-Juneau, noting the numerous and ongoing federal investigations of influence buying in the Alaska Legislature.

In a report called “States of Disclosure” issued last week, the center gave Alaska’s disclosure laws a B grade.

Alaska tied Texas as fourth best in the nation, behind the three states with A grades.

“Much of the enforcement, she said, comes from the public calling her staff’s attention to errors in submissions.

“The public is the best watchdog we have,” Hill said.”

Yeah I have watched Rachel Maddow for a long time and feel she is the best host on TV_ But the funny thing I noticed when reading mudflats (one of the main reasons I hung around) was that your style of writing is strikingly similar to the way Rachel expresses. Your little asides and the way you build up to a story- have a similar cadence to hers (or hers to you- whichever way the shoe slide onto the foot).

    Podcasts on iTunes info-
The “advanced” button is on the top toolbar. From there you can subscribe to a podcast by putting in the URL for the podcast. Unfortunately, Shanynn’s show does not have a separate URL that I can see. Maybe she can get that listed.

On the right side of her page http://shannynmoore.wordpress.com/ she lists podcast and podcast archives. If I clicked on each podcast, I can easily download into RealPlayer. I have a separate little mp3 player I use for non-iTune things, so perhaps that is what I will have to do until I can get a separate URL. For Rachel Maddow’s Green360 radio show, I just iTuned it once, and I just have to hit “get more episodes” right from the iPod and I don’t have to mess with using a computer. Maybe someone with more knowledge would know how this would work with Shannyn’s show. (BTW-When I clicked on the different podcasts, the URL didn’t change on the radio website.)

I, too, was not able to scroll to the most recent podcasts using Firefox. Explorer worked fine, though. Go figure.

If these folks are really unhappy with their government they should haul their backsides down to local government meetings, armed with specific suggestions as to how to amend the language of the ordinances or proposed ordinances they so disagree with, write letters to the editor, contact their state legislators, articulate their particular concerns to their congressional delegation, or even contact the appropriate federal departments or office of the president. Standing out in the park yelling in often inaccurate, often purposefully inflammatory generalities to their choir out of earshot of any reasonable person in a position to effect change doesn’t seem like a very constructive way to get what they want.

Note how Andree has commented a few times. At this point in time, a few of her comments have dozens of “recommend” votes while her detractors (gotta love those personal attacks) have just a couple.

Andree has a very good point about Kris Perry – has anyone challenged Perry’s paycheck collection during the relevant time frame?

Andree is off target, imho, to criticize Ericson “and his ilk” for not speaking up sooner. Instead, she should welcome the similarities in her message and his, and embrace his corroboration of her efforts. Her complaint appears political, and as we all know, too much focus on the political results in no substance. Use his article to your benefit, Andree. I was helping my sister doing some work at this Pet Clinic spay/neuter that they are opening up. It is a non-profit and were looking to get their supplies and equipment for the clinic, specifically maybe a washer and dryer. She told me about this Yahoo Groups ‘Freecycle Network’. I have no experience myself so I can not speak to how they work. Here is the link…. and their Motto.
    ———————————————-
    http://www.freecycle.org/

“Welcome! The Freecycle Network™ is made up of 4,770 groups with 6,922,000 members across the globe. It’s a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It’s all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer (them’s good people). Membership is free. To sign up, find your community by entering it into the search box above or by clicking on “Browse Groups” above the search box. Have fun!
    ————————————————–
Has anybody joined one of these and had good experiences..? Keeping stuff out of landfills is good. Every little bit helps.
The one comment that she had to me was that she ‘ thought ‘ some people browse the website or sign up for ‘ alerts’ and run around with a truck collecting stuff.. for resale or something (hard to stop that and people who abuse the purpose ) Because someone had a dryer posted and when she called the Giver said someone showed up within 10 minutes after posting it. Coincidence… maybe.
I’m thinking about signing up because you always have garage style stuff (a few pieces here and there ) during the year you might want to get rid of and it’s too much trouble to do a garage sale for a few items. Or you replaced something… and need to dispose of the older one, but it still worked. Someone who had ‘nothing ‘ would be happy to get it

Has anybody heard of them…Pro’s and Cons…?

Honesty: I posted info on Free and Cheapcycle groups during the last Red Shirt Hatathon in response to an AKM posting of some charitable giving. I suggested this was one way folks in need can meet those needs without having to go to charitable organizations.

I’ve used both (free and cheap) a few times… it’s neighbor to neighbor for both needed and no longer needed items. People will post something like: FOR SALE: Used washer, runs great, $20. Or NEEDED: Twin sized bed for child. Then, neighbors hook up via email and make the transaction.

If people are going around with trucks collecting stuff to sell, it’s contrary to the original mission/spirit of being neighbor helping neighbor.

I haven’t been over there in years, but it was a great experience when I used the sites… one neighbor was giving away TONS of flowers and other plantings, another had JUST the right sized cafe curtains for an odd sized window, etc. The neighbors were all really nice and we’re using it again soon to get rid of some of BF’s things (juke box, ping pong table, etc.)

    Hope this helps!

As avid fans of Shannyn’s we would like to see her given much more air time. Her talent and competence are an asset to your station, and her knowledge of culture, history and issues in Alaska are much more impressive than Fat Eddie Burke in a red t-shirt proclaiming his bigotry and “rascism”. LOL, that’s what we did when remodeling three 70′s style bathrooms……and we live in the country, lol…..just put it out by the road with a free sign on it.

One day a person stopped to ask if they could have 2 old tubs (not claw foot) just one regular enamel chipped steel and one molded plastic (not cast iron, ugh) they were sitting out in a pile of stuff we were pulling out of the woods behind the house (missouri’s landfill, sigh) anyway, they were gonna bury them and plant invasive things that need to be contained, like mint and raspberries, pretty clever, huh.

someone else wanted the old truck topper to provide shade for their goats, they set it on 4 sunken poles, cheap protection from the elements, and recycled junk!

someone else was gonna use the old kitchen sink for cleaning fish outdoors.

I only wish we’d gotten our metal hauled in before the prices dropped last summer, missed the boat on that one, but it cleaned up a lot of rural MO, which it really needs.

    Genius in the Bottle
    By MAUREEN DOWD

    WASHINGTON

As in all great affairs, Mark Sanford fell in love simultaneously with a woman and himself — with the dashing new version of himself he saw in her molten eyes.

In a weepy, gothic unraveling, the South Carolina governor gave a press conference illustrating how smitten he was, not only with his Argentine amante, but with his own tenderness, his own pathos and his own feminine side.

He got into trouble as a man and tried to get out as a woman.

He wanted to get his girlfriend a DVD of the movie “The Holiday,” presumably the Cameron Diaz-Kate Winslet chick flick about two women, one from L.A. and one from England, who trade homes and lives. He was fantasizing about catapulting himself into an exotic life where stimulus had nothing to do with budgets.

With Maria, he was no longer the penny-pinching millionaire Mark, who used to sleep on a futon in his Congressional office and once treated two congressmen to movie refreshments by bringing back a Coke and three straws.

No, he was someone altogether more fascinating: Marco, international man of mystery and suave god of sex and tango.

Mark was the self-righteous, Bible-thumping prig who pressed for Bill Clinton’s impeachment; Marco was the un-self-conscious Lothario, canoodling with Maria in Buenos Aires, throwing caution to the e-wind about their “soul-mate feel,” her tan lines, her curves, “the erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of night’s light.”

    *snip*

The Republican Party will never revive itself until its sanctimonious pantheon — Sanford, Gingrich, Limbaugh, Palin, Ensign, Vitter and hypocrites yet to be exposed — stop being two-faced.

    * * * * *
    Yeah…what she wrote!

Tampa police said Mays was found unresponsive by his wife Sunday morning. A fire rescue crew pronounced him dead at 7:45 a.m. It was not immediately clear how he died. He said he was hit on the head when an airplane he was on made a rough landing Saturday, and Mays’ wife told investigators he didn’t feel well before he went to bed that night.”

this is interesting, just this month in LA

    http://www.la-par.org/article.cfm?id=268&cateid=2

PAR says public records bill would stifle open government

“Two bills introduced this session, which would have opened most of the governor’s records to the public, are all but dead due to strong opposition from the administration. Instead, the administration supports SB 278, which purports to move Louisiana forward in executive branch transparency but would actually deliver a devastating blow to open government. SB 278 should be rejected. The amended bill was passed out of the House and Governmental Affairs Committee yesterday.

Louisiana law currently protects from public view all records (except financial) within the office of the governor. SB 278, as amended, would narrow current law to a degree, but would also create new problems. Records within the governor’s office, which relate to the governor’s security and schedule, intra-office communications of key staffers and the deliberative process, still would be restricted from public view. Questions remain as to which specific documents would be protected under the new exception.

By all accounts , he was keen at the business table…….the personal spending and the poor choices with boys was a whole different story. I predict lawyers and court fights that will probably come to past with the Jackson family and parental rights concerning these children.

Don’t let the politicians tell ya otherwise people, if they’ve got nothing to hide, they’ve got nothing to be afraid of. And if Scarah wasn’t blurring the lines then spending big bucks to find loopholes and whoever will protect her she wouldn’t be having these ethics complaints.

She did have back tax issues, per diam issues and child travel issues. All of which had to be investigated, straightened out and paid. She has violated laws, she’s just gotten around being “found guilty”, making settling and twisting arms.

I still say Arctic Cat has teeth. And her appealing to exempt Toads financial info, from what I’ve read is an ethics violation. The spouses income info is supposed to be disclosed, it’s required. She signed the disclosure agreement. Betchya that’s one of the new complaints.

    Public Access Is Key

Peggy Kerns, director of the Center for Ethics in Government with the National Conference of State Legislatures, said government transparency is becoming an increasingly important issue in public policy circles and the current trend — generally speaking — is for states to beef up their financial disclosure laws. But Kerns, who was a state legislator in Colorado for eight years, also told the Center that unless the public has easy access and knows where to find information, disclosure laws are just an empty gesture.

“Financial disclosure is the first step, but that is the bottom line as far as ethical standards,” she said. “Then, does anybody care that it’s disclosed, does anybody look at the information and connect the dots?”

I believe I also heard he left it to Sir Paul, which is only right. That said, there are a million conflicting reports out there now. One thing for sure: He ran his business life into the ground by his spending. If you don’t have $100K per month for RENT, you shouldn’t get to build that debt just because you are MJ. I don’t think anyone EVER has said “No” to him since he splashed on the scene. Big Mistake!

As for the kids: The Family will probably make the (valid) point that any of these other biological parents are complete unknowns to the children. To force the children into the custody of strangers will NOT be in their best interests. Also, too, the kids will have a say. They are all of an age to express a thoughtful opinion on who they want to live with.

The states, for the most part, followed the federal government in adopting open records laws.

Unfortunately, state FOI laws have proven to be almost uniformly weak and easy to undermine. The weakness and haphazard construction of the state laws has resulted in an information gap that significantly effects the citizenry’s ability to examine even the most fundamental actions of government.

Yet another one of her puppet string blunders.

there is a lot of good reading on this site.

“If the American people or certain states want citizen legislatures, then that is their business. We’re noting that if you do that, you better make sure you have controls in place and disclosure in place ensuring that people wearing more than one hat do their job properly. And what we’ve found is, that’s not the case.”

Q: What is the importance of disclosure?

A: State lawmakers are important people. They need to be held accountable. They are major-league politicians with minor-league systems of ethics. Sunshine is the best disinfectant everywhere, including in state legislatures. You cannot know too much about your public servants.

We knew that it would probably be quite stunning when we looked in legislatures, but I don’t think anyone thought we would find as much self-dealing and conflict-of-interest situations as we did. And it makes us look twice outside the Beltway, around the heartland, and realize that some of the most outrageous corruption in politics today is not just happening in Washington, it’s happening in states all across America.

It’s time the citizens and the media in the states paid a little more attention to the state lawmakers. Legislators are dealing with multi-billion dollar budgets and issues that affect our daily lives and they have become more important in some ways than members of Congress. It’s time we paid them the kind of scrutiny they deserve.

Ethics laws, no matter how well written otherwise, are a laugher as long as the Gov gets to appoint and fire those charged with investigating ethics complaints filed against him/her. The AG position needs to be removed from the political spoils category and made an elected position so that the AG serves the people rather than the governor. Then, let the State Supreme Court appoint the Personnel Board members, and the Senate Judiciary Committee confirm them.

Someguy being interviewed said the reason MJ covered them from head to toe in public when they were WITH him was so that they could go out in public WITHOUT him (movies with a friend, for example) and not be recognized/photographed/harrassed/etc.

Pretty lucid thinking from someone of questionable scruples otherwise!

And the London thing wasn’t really SUPER BIG TIME NEWS because he wasn’t hitting the U.S. stages. How much influence could he have had on ALL American Voters?

And, frankly, as nutty as MJ was, I’d hardly take his political advice. Nor would most rational, thinking adult voters.

MSNBC, which I leave on all day, actually broke from ALL MJ ALL THE TIME to air Meet the Press. They also did a really good “Legends” on Farrah, who is all but ignored for MJ.

Funny… you can tell on both the FF and MJ “Legends” documentaries that they were done a while back, stopping abruptly before reviewing the last X amount of time. Then, the commentator comes on and says “She valiantly fought the cancer, but in the end, the cancer won.” Or it could have read “Even though she valiantly fought the cancer, in the end, it was the car crash that killed her.” DUH. Two sentences to sum up a year old documentary!

Had the fries at a New York State county fair at least 20 yrs. ago. Loved them. But, this is where Canada is lagging behind the States. It was only last year that we could finally buy them (frozen) in supermarkets, at least in Ontario. In restaurants they look at you like you have two heads if you asked!!

Plate and drizzle with Annie’s Raspberry Dressing. Heaven on Earth. Not quite as good, but a close second is spinach with fresh crunchy pears, diced, toasted walnuts, gorgonzola cheese, dried cranberries and raspberry dressing.

Take out and thaw just enough to cut without breaking knife. Serve. Goodness on a plate. Amazing and oh, so, yummy.

We had a dept. store chain here in Detroit, JL HUDSON’s, who was eventually bought out by Macy’s. It and Jacobsons (fancier) were THE places to shop back in the day.

Anyway, JLH had a restaraunt in their stores that served up the MOST delicious Maurice Salad. It had a bit of everything (ham, hard boiled egg, choppped pickles and the usual salad stuff). But the BIG SECRET to making the salad super yummy was in the dressing!

At one time, I had the recipe… I think it included raw egg, which made it a little scary.

Then they BOTTLED IT for us! :-) Oh, joy of joys! Haven’t had it in YEARS, but I think the Macy’s Marketplace still carries it here in Detroit.

I’ll have to look that up.

NOW look what you folks have done! Sent me on a quest for my favorite dressing in the world! I think it also has to do with the Mommy and Daughters with Granny along shopping excursions that were kind of “tradition” with us. We’d always stop for lunch at Hudson’s. And, when we were REALLY young, they had really cool kids meals served up in a kid sized shopping bag with all kinds of stuff in it (besides the hot dog or burger and fries).

Twas an evening in October, I’ll confess I wasn’t sober,

When my feet began to stutter and I fell into the gutter,
And a Palin came up and sat down by my side.

She’s always bragging about being Commander in Chief of her National Guard… how could she not know they are not funded to come home?

Besides that, it seems REALLY BIZARRE to me that they would be serving in Kosovo or otherwise and could be “trapped” away from home if they didn’t have funds to get back. It just doesn’t make sense to me. They bring back folks all the time… the National Guard can’t hitch a ride with folks already on their way home? Something is not right with this story.

Was it SAYNO who brought up Rep. John Conyers’ wife’s bribery charge here in Detroit? Was just getting the headlines and in 90 days, she’ll be sentenced to at least 3 years in a Federal prison. Asked if our Gov thinks John should resign, she was firm in saying that it would be an unfair request. I agree… if HE hasn’t done anything wrong, why should HE lose his job?

I bring this up because Palin was so quick to ask for a resignation of AK’s duly elected rep when good ol’ whatshisname had his conviction overturned. I just sat there with the “jaw on floor, WTF” expression when she suggested that. Why in the world would someone give up their JOB just because their opponent was let off on charges due to technicalities (not necessarily innocence)? Likewise, why would a husband give up the family’s only income because his wife (soon to be “ex”?) chose illegal behavior?

DID YOU GUYS HEAR???? General Electric is moving part of their operations to MICHIGAN!!!! Wahoo and YIPPEE for us!! :-)

We need diversification here badly. The whole “all eggs in one basket” thing has really hurt us, when at one time we had no concerns at all about the auto industry supporting most of the state. Google moving in was a great start. Now, we have GE!!!

Grandholm also said that we will take prisoners from ANY state (AK and CA were specifically mentioned) and house them here to keep folks in their jobs and make a buck or two. Just recently, she told Arnold S. that we would take their CA prisoners if they pay us appropriately.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but CA has a prison “crisis” going on? Overpopulation? Trying to build new prison(s) without funds?

OK… Just read the article on the flights home. Seems NG troops want to fly home between training and deployment. All well and good. They have a couple of weeks off, can get mom to bake an apple pie, whatever.

The argument is that military aircraft can NOT be dedicated as a personal transportation service, but if there is a flight already going with room on it, they can take one of those flights.

I’ll have to agree with the military on this… They can’t take planes out of service just to shlep folks around domestically. They are not only very expensive to operate, but they are also there for a reason: authorized military activity. Sending a bunch of folks home for vacation who haven’t seen a single minute of combat isn’t where I would like my tax dollars spent.

Absolutely, however, once in combat, door to door services should be extended. After all, they have SERVED our country.

Where is the outrage NOW? Now that she made such an issue over CD’s photoshop, people have gone above and beyond to the extreme.

    Not a word from Palin
    ___________

Which is just more proof that this whole episode had nothing to do with the picture itself and everything to do with finding something that they could twist into an attack on Celtic Diva.

Had this in any way been about the photo, they would be screaming bloody murder about the photoshops that the guys at Something Awful has done. There are 10 pages of photos over there, and they get more hideous as time goes by. There was also no mention of those on Wonkette or any other blog either.

This was nothing more than an attack, a deliberate attack on Celtic Diva.

I may get nowhere w/DoD efforts to fully fund troops’ rtn trips so pls join charity drive to raise $ for flights. Nonsense troops must pay!

Just had a brilliant thought: Take it out of her Alaska Legal Fund

    Twitter:
In Anch. I’ll cont to work on Dept of Defense to fund soldiers’ trip home. Unacceptable to hear AK troops’ flts aren’t fully covered by DoD

Yes I know she’s Gov of Alaska, but if it’s happening for AK, it’s all over. Can she not ever refer to anything across the board? DOD doesn’t do things just for one state

    Sorry — that’s a logical thought

samper-DH was in Vietnam, door gunner on a helicopter.Having grown up as the eldest of 10,he had been an avid hunter, his mom would wake in the morning to find deer gutted and hanging on the back porch.
At the end of his tour in Nam,he had to spend time on a detail packing body parts and bodies into nets slung under helicopters to get them to a central point.

    He never hunted again.

honestyinGov–We Freecycle here and it’s great. Now there are Spin-cycle and Yarn-cycle groups on Ravelry.com too (Ravelry is a great site for the fiber (not the food kind!) obsessed).

Sorry to have missed all the fun food talk last night, but I was grilling sockeye salmon steaks and making homemade ice cream with our youth group and a youth group from Kentucky yesterday! Fun was had by all!
