Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Open Thread – Comic Relief

The last post got everyone pretty steamed. I know I was. Reading through the comments, I noticed that Martha UYS suggested that the governor needed to be hit with a fish. I immediately thought of this.

What you need to do is imagine that the guy on the right (who, ironically enough, I believe is Michael Palin) is the governor. John Cleese, on the left, represents the residents of the villages in Western Alaska.

Enjoy.

I’m wondering how many people think that Sarah pulled a fast one. A very unethical act of the highest order. In her saying she would be raising money for the troops to travel home when on leave. And then there is no way to make a donation yet, Meg and Sarah are sending out emails asking for everyone to contribute to SarahPAC.

I think the less educated may be getting scammed, thinking a donation to SarahPAC will go to the troops.

Here’s one quote from that article:

“They (McCain staffers) can’t quite believe that for two frantic months last fall, caught in a Bermuda Triangle of a campaign, they worked their tails off to try to elect as vice president of the United States someone who, by mid-October, they believed for certain was nowhere near ready for the job, and might never be,” Vanity Fair reports.

    Here’s another:

The Vanity Fair article recounts how strained Palin’s relationship was with the McCain advisers. She maintained “only the barest level of civil discourse” with Tucker Eskew, the operative assigned to be her chief minder, the magazine reports.

hoo boy – Mansour and the British Miniskirt Fanciers’ Cult are going to get Mrs Palin in a whole heap of trouble if they plan on continuing to pick fights with Alaskans – no matter whom. The last thing Palin needs is more local enmities.

You would think after the Jesus Trigging Christ debacle that Mansour would see for herself that her incessant interference in Palin’s life has only led to widespread opprobrium for her plastic idol. Picking fights with Alaskans is going to be much more damaging.

Mansour clearly has major boundary issues – so there should be some excellent comedy to look forward to very soon. :)

The Vanity Fair article was very conservative in any true criticism of Sarah.
All in all, it was a big softball article. In fact, Sarah’s supporters may even find it to be a pro-Sarah article. The article avoided any specific criticism and mention of any religious fanaticism or outright, consistent patterns of lies.

    This excerpt says a lot:

But Palin’s lack of knowledge turned out not to hurt her. Andrew Halcro later remembered that he and Palin once compared notes about their many encounters, and she said, “Andrew, I watch you at these debates with no notes, no papers, and yet when asked questions, you spout off facts, figures, and policies, and I’m amazed. But then I look out into the audience and I ask myself, Does any of this really matter?”

Federal judge rules state Ethics Commission ban on discussing complaints against public officials violates free speech
by Pete Shellem, Of The Patriot-News
    Monday June 29, 2009, 4:47 PM

A federal judge has ruled that the state Ethics Act’s ban on publicizing filings against state officials is likely unconstitutional and has granted a temporary injunction to a local activist who was fined for violating it.

District Judge Christopher C. Conner granted the injunction to Middle Paxton Township activist Gene Stilp, who was charged with violating the act after he announced he filed a complaint against former House Majority Leader William DeWeese based upon a newspaper article that accused DeWeese of spending $290,000 in tax money on political polls.

Within a day, the State Ethics Commission ruled there was not enough evidence in Stilp’s complaint to conduct an investigation and instead charged Stilp with violating the act by publicizing the filing of his complaint. On Oct. 16, Stilp entered into an agreement with the commission in which he admitted violating the act and agreed to pay a $500 fine. Stilp then filed suit in federal court to enjoin the commission from enforcing that provision of the act, saying it was a violation of his right to free speech.

Feel free to pass this on to Palin’s folks who’ve yapped about how filers have violated the law. …

    Todd S. Purdum
Award-winning journalist Todd S. Purdum joined Vanity Fair as national editor in 2006. Purdum had spent the last 23 years at The New York Times, where he started as a copyboy in 1982. He was most recently a correspondent in the Washington bureau, where he also served as a diplomatic and White House correspondent. From 1997 until 2001, Purdum was the Los Angeles bureau chief. He also held the positions of metropolitan reporter and city-hall bureau chief in New York.

While I expected more from the VF article, especially in the details of how conniving, dangerous, dishonest and vapid Palin really is, I do think on the whole it paints a pretty good picture of a woman who is uninformed and completely unqualified to hold any position of real leadership.

But what does emerge is that she does have one very effective talent. Her one and only talent is that she is very good at ‘progressing’ herself. She has perfected a simple yet effective skill that has allowed her to barge through closed doors. That method quite simply is to never say anything of substance, lie when necessary, never explain or apologize and most importantly always exploit the most superficial, meanlingless issue for full and complete drama thus effectively obfusticating from the truth that you are completely and totally unqualified and uninformed and uninterested in anything except of course – yourself.

The most telling line in that article to me is: “The second thing McCain could have discovered about Palin is that no political principle or personal relationship is more sacred than her own ambition.”

    Ask Bristol about that…

More than once in my travels in Alaska, people brought up, without prompting, the question of Palin’s extravagant self-regard.

Several told me, …..independently of one another….., that they had consulted the definition of “narcissistic personality disorder” in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders—“a pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy”—and thought it fit her perfectly. When Trig was born, Palin wrote an e-mail letter to friends and relatives, describing the belated news of her pregnancy and detailing Trig’s condition; she wrote the e-mail not in her own name but in God’s, and signed it “Trig’s Creator, Your Heavenly Father.”

Of one thing I’m sure: we don’t know the whole story, which is not to excuse him, either.

    From Vanity Fair article:
”“Just Make It All Go Away”
As Palin has piled misstep on top of misstep, the senior members of McCain’s campaign team have undergone a painful odyssey of their own…most made it clear that they suffer a kind of survivor’s guilt: they can’t quite believe…they worked their tails off to try to elect as vice president of the United States someone who, by mid-October, they believed for certain was nowhere near ready for the job, and might never be…None of McCain’s still-loyal soldiers will say negative things about Palin on the record…because there is ultimately no way to read McCain’s selection of Palin as reflecting anything other than an appalling egotism, heedlessness, and lack of judgment…and as reflecting, too, an unsettling willingness on their own part to aid and abet him. They all know that if their candidate—a 72-year-old cancer survivor—had won the presidency, the vice-presidency would be in the hands of a woman who lacked the knowledge, the preparation, the aptitude, and the temperament for the job…and even as they began to understand her limitations, plenty of McCain aides still saw Palin as the campaign’s best hope. Some still believe that, simply in terms of the electoral math, she helped at least as much as she hurt, and maybe helped more.”

So here we have it: why the rest of America was to be sacrificed upon the altar of Sarah. These boys/girls ought to be arrested for their blatant and reckless disregard for the reputation and security of the U.S. They wanted to WIN. The answer isn’t that they were being patriotic.

Good grief that these people have their names listed (with the author’s quote) in a hall of shame for all Americans to see: especially the ones who voted for McCain/Palin.

    I agree.

The lower 48 and the rest of the world cannot “know” Palin as Alaskans do.

The more that they do, the question of “How did she become governor in the first place?” comes up.

Believe me, after this article, that will be the question on most peoples minds.

Palin has been getting away with murder for years. The higher levels of corruption involving other Alaskan politicians and officials may have obscured SOME of it , but most folks were aware.

To think that PALIN was the one to reform ethics?? Please.

The way that Palin behaved in troopergate and the lack of reprimand from the legislature is confounding to most folks outside of Alaska.

The manner in which the personnel board and AG are “chosen” and deal with “ethics” is just simply outrageous.

An AG who advises folks to ignore subpoenas?

There could not be a larger invitation for corruption than this. Fox minding the hen house is only a mild description of this.

With all the corruption in government in Alaska, there does not seem to be ANY repercussion on a state level. The legislators, every single one of them should be ashamed of themselves. Speaking of shame, just what have these legislators done for the hungry folks in the villages, or the flood victims?

The FBI and other federal agency’s involvement is the first the rest of the country hears of it.

After reading the ADN one realizes that there IS no formal political reporting in Alaska.

If it were not for this blog and others folks outside of Alaska would know nothing about these politics. These bloggers have done more for the Alaskan people this last year than the politicians and newspapers combined. As they continue to do what they can I applaud them and the Alaskans that comment on them.

Instead of supporting the truth the ADN gleefully joins in on attacks of these brave bloggers. Instead of reporting the truth about people starving in the villages this winter, the ADN continues to write “Sarah’s Story”, what ever that might be at the moment. God FORBID that the ADN attempt to organize any help for them.

I really hate to say this but, the only thing Sarah Palin has done that Alaskans should thank her for, is to shine a bright light on the fertile environment that Alaska provides for corruption in it’s politics and politicians.

As someone already mentioned, I’m having a problem with local media outlets borrowing so heavily from the SP cult sites. When I’ve gone there, I haven’t found much that could be considered factual material or logical thinking, either from the posters or from those that comment. OK, so this video, posted by Eric the Bun:

Are we supposed to come away with some sort of “feeling” that SP is all “military” and stuff?

Anyone looking at her for the first time would think she SERVED on that aircraft carrier. They would also think she had some super duper position where she’s intently studying the controls/dashboard/whatever she’s staring at. They wouldn’t know it was a brief visit, she was dressed out in safety garb so folks aboard would know her TRUE position as a “visitor”, and that she truly has no clue as to what was going on that day.

But then, who hasn’t seen her before? She’s EVERYWHERE!

And, conversely, are we supposed to come away with the feeling President Obama actually condoned and was present at the “photo op” of AF1 flying low in NYC just because he is photographed in his flight jacket, smiling, joking, etc. along with photos of that day?

If you ask me, this is nothing but inflammatory propaganda… Sarah served on an aircraft carrier and knew it’s missions and workings and President Obama was in AF1 as it “buzzed” NYC for photo ops, terrifying 90% of the population (who, btw, imho, WAY overreacted… like AF1 is going to fly into their buildings!! you can NOT mistake the plane… unless you’re an idiot who doesn’t know what it looks like and can’t read “United States of America” emblazoned all over it!).

Nice little ad they have there. Manipulative, but nice!

On that whack job in OK – Kern, is it? A “National Day of Prayer” sort of kind of goes against the Constitution re: separation of Church and State, doesn’t it? Or doesn’t she care about that in all her rantings about how the USA must live by HER moral code, HER Bible, and HER God?

There are thousands of people who will be cold, hungry and/or homeless this winter because she is doing nothing to address their problems with subsistence, or losses suffered during break-up on the Yukon. add after elderly ‘hearing-impaired’. i believe that is a hearing aid in his right ear, the one closest to his interviewer.

if anyone could point to this as proof that everything’s fine and dandy in emmonak, they are beyond stupid – the man was clearly not hearing what the intervierwer was asking, and answered the question he thought he heard instead – hardly proof of anything. plus, the interviewers leading the interviewee with the subsistence question was so obvious.

remember also that if this is what is being put up on the govs website, it must be the best thing they have, or among a small amount of what they consider “good” video.

I see the Vanity Fair article as the first that has covered a substantial timeframe that paints a picture connecting the dots from A to B to C. All other articles written have covered when she was picked for VP, or an article on the family, the Levi/Bristol episode. More focused on one area and being in People Magazine.

The VF writer has researched and interviewed people in AK who worked with her or on her previous campaigns prior to McCain/Palin; he spoke to a number of people involved in the McCain/Palin campaign; spoke of the PAC, ethics. There were things I didn’t know i.e. the emails between the author and Meg, which provides further confirmation of the yahoo private email accounts.

For an article covering a wider timeframe — it’s excellent IMO. Not everyone follows her like those of us on blogs and therefore not every minute detail is needed. It’s a magazine article — not a book, but it does set a base for comparison to her book. There is not enough space to include it all in one shot. I imagine he had to re-write and condense for 6 pages!!

Think of it as pacing ourselves in that there is a long time before 2012. Nobody’s hat is in the ring. They’re still tripping over each other for leader of the party. There is sufficient time for the writer to do further articles if he wished to, as others will do. These kind of articles are good within the time of campaigns when more people are interested and paying attention.

The McCain Campaign would do a great service to all Alaskans by exposing her biting “Queen Bee” behavior to the world. I am so sick of her playing “the victim” in order to stay in the limelight. Here’s what will happen with Franken:

Pawlenty will delay… Coleman has 10 days to file AGAIN.

Pawlenty doesn’t want to sign the cert unless “directed to do so” by court. That way, he’s “not responsible”. Read: Needs job in 2010.

SCOTUS will go into summer recess. Soon, if not already.

If Coleman appeals to SCOTUS, they either have to act QUICKLY, call SPECIAL SESSION, or WAIT UNTIL SESSION RESUMES.

Soonest for seating Franken: July 10th or so (10 days lapse for Coleman’s option).

LATEST: Upon reconvening of SCOTUS after summer recess.

This is an ABSOLUTE TRAVESTY! The stupid idiots (COLEMAN/PAWLENTY) are making a mockery of the system, knowing that FRANKEN won MONTHS ago. They are not respecting the spirit of our elections. They are not playing fair with their constituents, who are under-represented in DC.

HonestyinGov: I think the King Kong reference is how he swatted planes away while on the E.S. Bldg in the movie.

It’s a lame reference to the event several weeks ago in which folks (without PO knowing or condoning) took AF1 to NYC for photos of it crossing the Statue of Liberty. They wanted a really stunning shot of the plane with the statue. The plane, I believe was followed by military helicopters or smaller planes. It wasn’t alone, that’s for sure.

PO then made a joke at some fancy dinner that the girls weren’t there because they were grounded for taking AF1 out on a joy ride.

The plane got too close in Manhattan and everyone freaked out because it was flying low.

The subsequent photos of PO in AF1 give the inference that he was ON the plane as it was flying low in Manhattan, even though he wasn’t.

In other words, they want to give the illusion that PO was on the plane that traumatized thousands who thought it was going to fly into a building.

‘In dozens of conversations during a recent visit to Alaska, it was easy to learn that there has always been a counter-narrative about Palin, and indeed it has become the dominant one. It is the story of a political novice with an intuitive feel for the temper of her times, a woman who saw her opportunities and coolly seized them. In every job, she surrounded herself with an insular coterie of trusted friends, took disagreements personally, discarded people who were no longer useful, and swiftly dealt vengeance on enemies, real or perceived. “Remember,” says Lyda Green, a former Republican state senator who once represented Palin’s home district, and who over the years went from being a supporter of Palin’s to a bitter foe, “her nickname in high school was ‘Barracuda.’ I was never called Barracuda. Were you? There’s a certain instinct there that you go for the jugular.”’

No longer useful? Under the bus!!!

First, the headline on the Alaska Newsreader summary page: Palin in Runner’s World: I’d outlast Obama

Second, the headline on the story itself: Palin in Runner’s World: I’d outlast Obama

What was said by Palin: She says she’s too short to beat President Obama in one-on-one basketball but that marathon time proves she could outlast him in a long footrace. “It wasn’t necessarily a good running time, but it proves I have the endurance within me to at least gut it out. … So if were a long race that required a lot of endurance I’d win.”

    ———–

Can’t you just see the C4P’ers jumping up and down in glee, saying “see, see, we TOLD you she was going to run against Obama in 2012!!!”, never bothering to read the actual story, never getting past the first and second headlines…?

KaJo, that’s about ManSOUR, big chief over “there”. She was on Eddie Smirk show yesterday, so was Ramas. I didn’t hear it. ManSOUR is going after Ramas because he “says not always supportive things” about Scarah, so she did some dirt diggin on him and basically dared someone to take the ball and file a an ethics complaint against him for conflict of interest with stock purchases.

Basically she’s just stuck her nose in legislative business and her “cult” were carrying the dirt ball far and wide, lol.

I have tried doing a google search without any success looking for a site to donate money to the troops. All I get is SarahPac.

If this is true, wouldn’t it be a FEC violation? You can’t solicit money for one purpose and use it for another, can you? Isn’t that illegal? Has she even set up a fund to collect money for the soldiers as she indicated in one of her tweets?

    Success= preparation + opportunity

Sarah has been given the opportunity by McCain and she now has two years to build on her superatar talents to prepare for the primaries. After that SUCCESS is just a matter of steady execution.

If you knew you had to sink a putt to keep from losing who would you rather see over that putt?

    Answer: Tiger Woods

If you could choose one GOP current politician to bring off continual fiery and inspirational performances during the primary debates and in so doing galvanize the entire country who would that be?

I took a look at the Runners World photos of Palin out of curiosity about the “flag” pose….

Now, I’m very admiring of anyone who takes exercising seriously, as Palin apparently does, but I fail to see how any of those contrived poses have anything to do with the sport of running. Quite frankly, they looked more like the simpering poses of my daughter’s 15 yo friends on their MySpace pages.

Anyhow….I agree. The pose with the flag was an unwarranted display of concupiscence mixed with an oddly scripted attempt at “casual patriotism.”

BTW….Is there such a thing as “casual patriotism?” Does it consist of throwing a US flag over a chair back while one leans on it in a runner’s get up while flirting with the camera man?…..I guess I’m not familiar with that. We always took our flag down from the pole and folded it respectfully for storage at night.
