Open Thread – Moment of Zen
What a day. Fingers sore, brain cluttered…. Reminded me of one of those days during the campaign. It’s time for a moment of Zen. Here are some beautiful Alpine Dogwoods and ferns. Enjoy.
And don’t forget, this thread stays open ALL DAY until tomorrow about this time. So if you’re tempted to make an off-topic comment or share a fabulous link on another thread, just come here, the magical thread where you can never be off topic! I’ve gotten quite a few emails since I started doing the open thread, stating how nice it is to have the comments on each post pertinent to that topic, and yet still have the freedom to be off-the-cuff and current on the open thread. I agree, and think it makes everything much more readable. Thanks, everyone!

Let the slow train wrecks continue without injuring our necks……AKM you rock!
Yes, the open thread is a great idea! Now, I must catch up on the others. G’nite AKM.

So, SC’s AG will investigate Sanford for maybe using state resources to fly to Argentina to see his lover, but Alaska’s AG doesn’t give two shits to say anything publicly about Palin misusing funds to fly her children around and use state resources to campaign.
Priceless

Right back at ya. I live in daily gratitude for the circumstances that brought me to this great country. In spite of all our flaws and shortcomings, I can think of nowhere else I would rather live. And now, prouder than ever to be an American!

Thank you AKM for the open thread and the way it makes the other posts easier to read.
re austin @ 3 – the moon can be hidden if only you’d pull your pants back up.
if you take away one leaf from the teeny dogwood, you’d have a pretty little trillium.
Bears knocked over my beehives last night. Little blackies scampering around the upper hillside. I slept with one eye open last night! One went into the garage of a neighborhood with a fellow juvenile delinquent and took a bag of garbage.
Naughty kids.
Hot wire is almost charged up, one more long day of Alaska sun.
Sarah should be having a great 4th, think she’ll be handing out hotdogs at the 4th celebration this weekend?
not!
I’m reposting this from the “band-aid” thread because I’m curious what you all think:
POLL: is Sarah Palin a pathological or compulsive liar? (or both?)
A pathological liar lies to get their way and does so with little concern for others. Pathological lying is a coping mechanism developed in early childhood and often associated with some other type of mental health disorder (ie, narcissistic personality disorder). A pathological liar is often goal-oriented and lies to get their way). A pathological liar often comes across as being manipulative, cunning and self-centered.
A compulsive liar lies out of habit. Lying is their normal and reflexive way of responding to questions. Compulsive liars bend the truth about everything, large and small. For a compulsive liar, telling the truth is very awkward and uncomfortable while lying feels right. Compulsive lying develops in early childhood due to being placed in an environment where lying was necessary. Compulsive liars are NOT overly manipulative and cunning – they simply lie out of habit.
Good morning, mudpups! It is beautiful here in the High Desert; it rained last night (we are always grateful for liquid gold, but hope it avoids the evening fireworks), and I get to bring daughter2 home from the hospital today. She has a cerebral blood clot- just like daughter1. Very, very rare- and there probably is a genetic component. (I’ve passed on genetic ickies, but this is Mr. CO’s fault, lol) We’ll be doing research with a hematologist on the family- Daughter1 has her three month check-up this AM, and we’re hoping the clot has dissolved.
Don’t ignore severe headaches that last several days, or pain/swelling in legs–
Happy Fourth of July to all; it’s great to be an American, celebrate with hope.
I vote Pathological liar. Evidence? The story about planning to lie about the health insurance. That was a goal oriented lie as are all her lies.
Hello everyone…with a special shout~out to “ServerGuy!”
Anyone open to Chinese checkers ~ as the extra element of “strategery” can be fun to watch! Heading out now to stock up on the kernels….
Btw, stunning image AKM! Thanks for sharing the view from your vantage point.
Enjoy the day all,
hehe for those that want to know, with me being in Japan, and my lack of posting here… my IP got sorta got stuck in a loop.
I usually only deal with ‘meta’ problems server side, and where i can avoid it zero on the day to day of the blog and forums.
That isn’t to say I don’t have comments, I just usually keep them to myself. its one of the up/downsides of my position.
with that in mind, i don’t have admin access to most of here – although i have the big red switch
all that said, a large chunk of here comes outa my butt, so y’all feel free to buy stuff from the store, so the power that be can help supplement my beer money
AKM this is a gorgeous picture! I don’t think I’ve ever seen Alpine dogwood before. It’s so dainty. Thank you for the all the pictures. I also love the pictures at Celtic Diva’s blog. You and she have given us an amazing “window” onto the beauties of Alaska. We must strive to preserve these places for no other reason than that they exist as Mother Nature made them. And all Her critters as well – even naughty bears that steal honey and poach garbage bags. Here we have possums and raccoons rummaging and foraging for meals, and the most audacious grackles you’ve ever seen!
Good Morning ….Wishing you all a happy and safe 4th…Thank you again AKM. for all you do…This is the BEST blog ever..:))

Murphy also offered this outline for Palin’s political future:
Three things are going to happen with Sarah Palin. She’s either not going to run, and then she’s not gonna matter much in national politics. Two, she is gonna run and do poorly, and then she’ll matter a little but not a lot. Or three, she’s gonna have the greatest comeback in American political history and get nominated. If the Sarah Palin that people perceive today is the one who’s nominated in a few years I think we’d lose the election. But the very act of that kind of comeback that she would need to win the Republican nomination probably, again it’s crystal ball stuff, might be a new and improved Sarah Palin. There’s room to grow; she has a lot of natural talent. The problem is there’s a lot of controversy… Right now most Americans don’t perceive her as qualified to be President or someone they support.
I was reading recently about the personality disorder known as “borderline personality”…characterized by an unstable sense of self, extreme neediness, mood swings, intense conflicts with others, etc. I wonder about this for SP, since she tends to “turn into” whomever she is speaking with; for example, when speaking with reporters she refers to herself as a journalist who knows how they should be doing their job. When speaking with runners world she mentions that she will be promoting health and fitness. When running on McCain’s ticket, she interpreted her role as “the partner, the teammate” of the President rather than as his assistant…
If anyone is interested in my conversation with Runner’s World re: the flag, jump over to the Band Aid thread!
Suffice it to say, they are “in the tank” for Palin, but I think I held up pretty well.
Wouldn’t hurt if you guys wanted to dash off a note to Mark.Remy@rodale.com in response to the flag shot or layout as a whole. I don’t think he believes that I have reached many “readers” of his rag.
OMG! As I’m writing this, MSNBC is addressing the EXACT same issue of the Flag Code, the photo, and the inappropriateness of it!
Come on, you guys! Jump into the mix!
a good morning to all…and a special call out to server guy of whom i’ve fond memories .
remember the days of the turnover from “mudflats to THE MUDFLATS”, and the days of server problems when we mudflats addicts were deranged without our hourly fix?
ahhhh. the exhiliration of it all.
Contessa Brewer on the show right after Morning Joe just brought up the Runners World flag photo and the comment that it violated the US flag code. She did temper it a bit by saying maybe they should be talking about the photographer being “wrong” to do that, not just Sarah Palin. The new guy asked about whether or not there was such a thing as “patriotic p*rn.” Love the little digs!
Don’t know the name of the show. Maybe Morning Meeting?

“Forest Service must reinstate tougher guidelines
By Peter Fimrite // July 1, 2009
San Francisco Chronicle
A federal judge in San Francisco Tuesday struck down national forest management rules devised by the Bush administration that environmentalists had denounced as a thinly veiled sop for timber companies.
U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilkin ruled in favor of a group of 14 environmental organizations that sued the U.S. Forest Service for essentially relaxing regulations in violation of the National Environmental Policy Act and Endangered Species Act.
The decision means the Forest Service will have to reinstate rules protecting fish and wildlife and limiting logging in 150 national forests and 20 national grasslands covering 192 million acres, including more than a dozen national forests in California.
“It is a great victory for national forests,” said Marc Fink, a lawyer for the Center for Biological Diversity, which was one of the plaintiffs. “We’re hoping today’s ruling is the final nail in the coffin for the Bush forest policies and that we can move forward and do what is right for the forests….”
this goes with the Forrest article I posted…….hmmm, clean water.
“The Bush rules stripped away the U.S. Forest Service’s requirement to maintain viable wildlife populations whenever it planned a new clear-cut, mine, or road. The rules also banned the Forest Service from even considering environmental impacts when developing long-term management plans guiding million of acres of lands.
The court, however, agreed with the Center for Biological Diversity’s lawsuit that such willful disregard for endangered species, clean water, and quiet recreation violated the Endangered Species Act and other laws, and struck down the rules in their entirety.”
Yesterday was the inauguration of our new mayor in Anchorage, Dan Sullivan. The average age of the crowd was over 40, and it was at least 95% white. Not a true representation of the Anchorage population. When Mark Begich had his swearing in, it was a true, multi-age, multi-ethnic, multi-partisan crowd. Will Dan S. pander to his base? Of course. Will he be able to rise above it and truly serve the entire city? I think he can and with the proper encouragement, he will.
Just wanted to share some good news from Minnesota … Al Franken (D) has finally been declared the winner of the U.S. Senate seat for Minnesota over Norm Coleman (R)!! The Minnesota Supreme Court ruled 5-0 declaring Franken the winner. This could give the Dems a 60th vote and filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. He will be sworn in soon after July 4th. Yay Al!!!!!!!

CO almost native, my prayers are with you for continued hope and healing. Thanks for the reminder not to ignore those warning signs.
ServerGuy – greetings! What’s the time difference to Japan?
AKM, thanks for identifying the Alpine Dogwood. I’ve been enjoying them at my house and wondering what they were called.
Freakout – I’m voting pathological, though I don’t think either version should be in leadership positions. She lies, and gets caught repeatedly. Ever wonder what we don’t catch? **shudders** Scarier still is that there are delusional people who insist on supporting her no matter what she does (I’m related to a couple of them.)
Lilyf – good points. It fits.

(((CO almost native)))
A year ago, on Memorial Day, my son was cleaning his yard in preparation for a family BBQ. He was bitten on the ankle by a brown recluse spider. Twenty-four-hours later, he was in the hospital with a fever off the thermometer reading, heart palpitations so bad they had to stop his heart and rejolt it, delirium and toxemia. My beautiful daughter-in-law who is a PA insisted he be transferred to NYU instead of being kept in their local hospital overnight for observation. Thank the gods she did because the next day he was in surgery having the aortic root and mitral valve in his heart being replaced due to “cabbaging” from infection. Not two months later, he was BACK in the hospital with congestive heart failure and having the aortic root replaced again along with the interior walls of his heart. Three months later, during an examination by echocardiagram, an aneurysm on his ascending aorta was discovered. BACK to NYU for a third surgery to repair this aneurysm. They have one daughter, my granddaughter, who is nearly seven.
As of now, he is well and we take each day as it dawns.
I don’t know the lesson one can draw from such a thing, except to be very grateful for every day you have. I believe one can take heart by being blessed with family in good times and bad, the love and support of friends and community. To dwell too much on the negative and the perceived slights from others is very unhealthy. Take pleasure in the little things.
I didn’t mean for this to turn into such a long post. I really meant to offer some comfort to Co almost native, and it just started pouring out. I’m sorry you have to go through this CO, but know that we are here for you.

“Although Palin will almost certainly run for president as an outsider to Washington (if she runs at all), she will need advocates inside the Beltway to help her raise money and keep a lid on the background sniping that is part and parcel of any presidential bid.
Palin may — finally — be understanding that reality.
Fred Malek, who served as a national finance committee chair for McCain’s presidential bid, said that he recently hosted a foreign policy lunch at Palin’s request in which she mixed with the likes of former secretary of defense Frank Carlucci and former deputy secretary of state Strobe Talbott.
“She has been vastly underestimated as a result of one or two interviews,” said Malek of Palin. “I have spent a lot of time around her and can state unequivocally she is smart, perceptive, curious, and absolutely on top of issues like energy which are pivotal to her role as Alaska’s Governor. “

Although, there is a dead silence that should be broken SOON over the mis-tweets over Emmonak and subsistence issues. Don’t give them the power to ruin YOUR independence day, and your reasons for enjoying the celebration. We are all giving the “goons” a lot more attention than they deserve – it’s the train wreck thingie and the “I can’t believe people are this ignorant and mean” thingie. Forget them for your celebration, and we’ll keep up the good fight on all fronts to keep the creeps from making policy for the rest of us with their stupidity, fear and complete lack of ethics. I think we can all agree on something this morning…..
It’s time for Hays Research to release another Poll on GINO.
I say she’s in the 40′s range now. It was 55% before. No bragging anymore.
@Say No to Palin in Politics: I’m with you; I think that it’s both kind of lying. Probably started as one and morphed into the other (don’t know which came first). I think that some of the lying is to make her appear more important. The lies are not thought out ahead of time; she says whatever pops into her head of the moment (The Wild Ride Story). The recent CBS piece points to an attempted cover up, such as Todd really thought that he was marking “Independent” in the voter registration form. All one has to do is look at the form to see that’s hardly possible.
I also think that there is some psychology involved when she encounters a bit of reality. Some might have a good time analyzing the story about running during debate prep at McCain’s ranch. What she did, both literally and figuratively, is trip herself up. There may have been a moment (briefly) when she realized that she was over her head and heading for a fall.
When she talking about how much she seemed to enjoy the pain of running I hear something psychological– self punishment (thrashing her guts, burning thighs) OK, they are sexually charged images, but also ask yourself why she needs to hurt herself (punish herself). There are other ways to stay fit without the pain.
My guess is that Sarah does not spend alot of time seriously reflecting on how she looks or sounds just as long as she is the center of attention. How could anyone who wants to be taken seriously as a future presidential candidate strike that pose with the flag? She sets herself up to be the victim yet again, “Oh look how they trash me for my good looks, the sexists pigs!” I think that it is all part of one big really interesting package. Psychologists will have a field day analyzing her for some time.

i.e. SHE IS A PERFECT PAWN FOR US NEOCONS.
Only an ulterior motive would have these people support Gov. Icon for any National office. I can just imagine how Steve Schmidt was just floored by the behavior & had to do damage control every minute.
And to MarthaUnAlaska – I so remember the “you’re not a patriot” talk during the build up to the Iraq invasion. Such hypocrisy that these same people (flag pin anyone?) are planning to protest America on the 4th. The only good thing is cameras will be rolling, for all to see.

eeek! Uhhhh, what an amazing vid. How to keep?
Yahoo answers suggests:
This is pretty complicated, but it works:
if you use firefox, all of your youtube videos will be stored in a temporary folder.
usually C:\documents and settings\(user name)\local settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\(string of random letters and numbers .default)\cache
before you watch the videos, delete everything but the cache_map and Cache_ files to save confusion. Each video you watch will be stored in this folder, as a random file name. After you watch the videos, they will show up in this folder as large files. Just add .flv to the end of the file name, click edit and move it to whatever folder you want, then use the free flv converter to change it to whatever file format you want. If you want to just leave ‘em as the original files, you can watch them with the videolan viewer. It’ll play just about anything.
If you use Explorer, it saves the files in a different folder, usually C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
It preserves the extensions; just move the files to whatever folder you want.
Either of these browsers does delete all the temporary files on a regular basis, so you need to move whatever you want to keep to another folder. Don’t leave anything you’re keeping in the temp folders.
If you’re going to change the files to other formats, or watch them without adding .flv extensions to the filenames, go to download.com and download a little program called free flv converter 4.8 then
go to sourceforge.net and download another free program called videolan.
Another suggestion is to google “free video converters.
What a catch!

austintx: You’ve got mail!
You guys wouldn’t BELIEVE the emails flying between RW and myself! He’s sending me all your comments and his stupid, lame replies.
I’ve challenged him to:
1. Take responsibility instead of passing the buck
2. Provide a NAME of the photo editor
3. Answer why this “Boy Scout” and “Patriotic” fella allowed such a thing.
He’s claiming he’s editor of rw.COM, not of the magazine itself. My argument is that the photos are PRE-published on line to a wider audience than print and that he bears responsibility.
Thanks for hanging in, guys!
Sullivan being sworn in only yesterday as Mayor, did anybody read or hear anything about what he was up to last week?
I just read at Immoral Minority that “Sullivan said he had mentioned those discussions in a conversation last weekend with an ambassador from the Czech Republic”. According to Immoral Minority, this was a discussion with the Ambassador regarding the proposed ordinance.
Was Sullivan with Palin on her adventure to Kosovo? If he was — Why? Who authorized? Who paid? This also leads to the question of what is going on between Palin and Sullivan?
LOL……from James Wolcott blog @ VF……thanks Kajo for the link and laugh.
“a long, methodically researched investigation that proves beyond the shad roe of a doubt that Palin would mow down nuns, elderly people on walkers, and Mitt Romney’s entire clan with her snowmobile if they meandered in the path of her Napoleonic presidential ambitions.”

Been running for a long time. Never heard anyone make references to their thighs before, just quads and hamstrings. However, the late Shel Silverstein did write a song titled. “Never bite a married woman on the thigh.”
remember this? she’s never thought of “gender” to be an issue, lol……oh Scarah’s so laughable.
“I had a great upbringing under Title IX,” Palin told Alaska Business Monthly shortly after becoming governor in late 2006. “I can’t imagine where I’d be without the opportunities provided to me in sports. Sports taught me that gender isn’t an issue; in fact, when people talk about me being the first female governor, I’m a little absent from that discussion, because I’ve never thought of gender as an issue. In sports, you learn self-discipline, healthy competition, to be gracious in victory and defeat, and the importance of being part of a team and understanding what part you play on that team. You all work together to reach a goal, and I think all of those factors come into play in my role as governor.”
Is there anyone here who has seen Palin running? She says she does this running “ALONE.” Just wanted to know if she has been seen and how many times and where.
Awww, it’s not just OUR governor who is thought to be a narcissist: http://www.thestate.com/sanford/story/849427.html
Say NO to Palin in Politics
A tip for Firefox users – Install the extension VideoDownloadHelper and Flash videos can be saved to disk with a click or two from many sources, including Youtube (with a choice of resolutions).
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006
The extension also includes the option to have the Flash videos automatically converted to .avi files (using ffmpeg) so that they can be played with Windows Media Player. The process is maybe not something a novice would like to take on. I suggest instead, Google WinFF (or go to winff.org) and get a Windows GUI for the same converter (ffmpeg). Ffmpeg is installed transparently along with WinFF. It’s a simple, straightforward Windows install, and easy to use. Ffmpeg is a command line app, but with WinFF, even though you’ll see a command window, you need not enter any commands there. Video conversions around here are typically done while I sleep.
There are also “browser helpers” available for IE to save Flash videos, but since I don;’t use IE, I have no experience with them.
Also, an easy way to save videos from the Firefox cache is to install the extension CacheViewer. And she really BELIEVES it?

Check out the delightfully worded URL on this follow-up blog entry by a fellow Vanity Fair writer on his compatriot’s 6-page story and the Runner’s World pin-up/photo-op of Palin:
————————————————
From one of the imbed links where he is giving his opinion it goes to the National Review page where a Jim Geraghty is giving his opinion and being very dismissive of the VF piece. Implying it was verrrrry long and not really worth reading ( IE : Low -lights… His words)…. but here is just ONE idea he is throwing out there…. or HIS rationalization and defense of SP.
————————————–
“To go through the 9,800 word profile/excoriation of Sarah Palin by Todd Purdum in Vanity Fair and Fisk it line by line would take an enormous amount of time and space, and probably more time than you’re willing to devote to reading it. So for now, the low-lights:
Whatever her political future, the emergence of Sarah Palin raises questions that will not soon go away. “What does it say about the nature of modern American politics that a public official who often seems proud of what she does not know is not only accepted but applauded?”
I’m still looking for any quote from Palin at any time where she expressed pride in what she does not know. The closest we come to in the article is an anecdote in which she tells a gubernatorial rival that she’s amazed at his command of “facts, figures, and policies” but then looks into the audience and wonders whether any of it really matters. We don’t know which “facts, figures, and policies” she’s referring to”
————————————————-
He wants to SEE a ‘ QUOTE ‘…. where she expressed pride in what she doesn’t… KNOW..? There are NO quotes that he will ever find (more of the sea of pee mentality ) There is an awful LOT of video where she is winking and blinking and being dismissive (big HAPPY grins ) and not even answering questions being asked. I guess he only READ about the debates (seeing only the words ) and never watched them. I’m glad we SAW the debates. Our eyes are open.
Keep looking for those ‘ quotes ‘ National Review. And wasn’t it Bill Kristol of the ” National Review ” that vetted Palin…(insert BIG laugh here )

caught another interesting “tid bit”, Scarah’s “senior aide” from the McCain campaign went with Scarah and MEG to NY! compliments via Scarahpac I’m sure. So he’s most likely her adviser right now.
Also, too…….here we have the “behind us” “move on” talk, remember that?! he’s campaigning for her! so, what all do we know about this guy? what are his connections to Malek and Coale?
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/07/01/politics/main5128672.shtml
“Jason Recher, who remains a staunch Palin supporter and recently accompanied the governor on a trip to New York, said he hoped people would focus more on positive memories from the campaign.
“These internal communications and debates are in reference to a campaign that no longer exists,” Recher said. “It proves wrong the anonymous claims that Governor Palin didn’t seek or follow counsel from senior strategists on a wide array of issues. Sarah Palin has moved on with her life and continues to have a positive impact on so many. We should follow her lead and do the same.”
I also found this funny, LOL………
“Palin’s insertion of the five additional staffers in the e-mail chain was an apparent attempt to rally her own troops in the face of a decision from the commanding general with which she disagreed. Her inclusion of her personal assistant was particularly telling about her quest for affirmation and support in numbers, since the young staffer was not in a position to have any input on campaign strategy.”
We have the coolest President! This was yesterday:

just know reading the Sanford mental state article, lol……..he’s royally getting what he deserves.
“John Crangle, executive director of Common Cause South Carolina, called Sanford “delusional” and said it was obvious the governor has “serious mental problems.”
“The idea that he could carry on this relationship and at the same time be governor, run the Republican governor’s association and have presidential aspirations, it shows an individual who has lost contact with reality,” said Crangle, who has worked as a divorce lawyer. “He sees no limitations. He can do what he wants.”

Is there another Assembly meeting on the proposed ordinance that Prevo has his panties in a bunch over next week? Or is that all tabled now that D Sullivan is mayor?
After picking up our local rag and seeing a headline on the front page about SP challenging our president to a footrace–yeah, that’s important–but nothing about any of the rural issues, I was thoroughly disgusted (you think ADN is bad-our paper makes ADN look downright liberal).
I was listening to my favorite left-wing radio station on the way home from work and there was a great story. I will have to give you just the gist of it.
Somewhere in the US a small bunch of Baptists decide to picket a Jewish temple. Why? Because they are Jewish and because they welcome members of the LGBT community into their place of worship (oh good heavens, we can’t have that!)
Apparently (I believe they said 6) members of the Baptists (they said something about family members that I didn’t quite get) showed up to picket.
What did the leaders of the temple do?
Wait for it…
They decided to have a fundraiser: People donated $1 for every minute that the picketers stood out there.
They made $10,000 in 50 minutes.
Just think what an Anchorage Assembly meeting could raise. We could feed people, buy fuel, rebuild Eagle for goodness sake.
I thought it was beautiful.
Fundraiser anyone????

Even though Mr. Remy did not do the photograpy…his magazine ran the photos. So what is the difference?
I sent him a short but curt note. We will see if I get a reply.
cynamen…i did notice the face in the picture right off.
and i was reminded of a faun.
i’m sorry, lori…got caught up in the heat of the moment.
we shouldn’t be “going after” anyone.
but in our defense:
i suppose that we just get frustrated sometimes and want someone to be held accountable for the disaster that is palin’s world.
in the case of rw, well, someone should have edited those photos better.
imo, an email to express dismay at the handling of the flag is not out of order.
Lori in LA: There are alot of reasons to go after the RW thing.
1. Palin lies in the article.
2. She was all bent about “desecrating” the “iconic image” of her and Trig, when she HYPOCRITICALLY did it with a REAL iconic image, that of our flag. The “rules” are published for treatment of the flag. They aren’t for some random photo of her carrying her baby like he’s a sack of potatoes.
3. It was tacky and disrespectful for the mother of someone in active service to be leaning on a flag tossed over a bar stool and equally tacky for RW to stage and print it.
4. DO NOT take this to the Photo Editor! The Executive Editor, Mark Remy, is responsible for getting the photos to the masses via RW dot com FIRST (before print edition hit the stands). He claims to be a former Boy Scout and true “patriot”, but has no respect for his readers, the flag, or anything else. And he is a JERK.
5. After the big stink about President Obama and the Flag Pin, this is even better to nail her with.
6. She doesn’t seem very “Presidential” in the layout.
6. We don’t like Palin.
Oh, and if anyone missed it, it was on MSNBC this morning, too… the photo, the Flag Code, the whole shootin’ match. It’s not just us… folks all over are mad that they portrayed our flag that way (esp. on 4th of July weekend).
InJuneau: Well… I guess we can excuse you THIS time, but if it happens again, we expect you to make and confirm identity well before you are out of striking range.
samper: I agree.
Also, too, if word gets around in publishing circles about these issues surrounding this RW fluff piece, perhaps the next mag editor contemplating doing a fluffy bit of a PR piece for Palin will think twice, or at least be a little more skeptical and examine her words and actions a little more carefully.
AKM you should sell your photos in your cafe press store. I’d love to have a copy of this one hanging in my office. . . sigh. Absolutely beautiful….
Just so you guys know…
Every single email Remy gets about the flag photo, he is sending to me, along with his lame and stupid “passing the buck” stock answer (you are ALL getting the same answer).
Also, he is sending me (a complete stranger to him) all of your email addresses, contained within the messages. I hope you all know that I would never do anything at all with them, but you might take that up with Remy if it bothers you that he would do such a thing.
I think he really underestimated what the ‘pups could accomplish in bugging him, if nothing else!
Alaska could use the same speculation about Palin, from “fellow politicians”.

Is Mark Sanford crazy? Some in S. Carolina now wonder
By Noelle Phillips | The State
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Gov. Mark Sanford is acting like a love-struck teenager.
Or, maybe he has a deeper personality disorder, some experts speculate.
As the saga of Sanford and his Argentine lover continues, the public, the governor’s political rivals and some allies are speculating about the governor’s mental stability and whether he’s able to lead the state.
While mental health experts are reluctant to pin a diagnosis on the governor, their observations of his behavior suggest a chemical imbalance, narcissism and impulsive behavior.
Sanford has not sought professional mental health treatment, said Joel Sawyer, the governor’s spokesman.
But some fellow politicians are saying the governor needs help.
“That’s a troubled man,” said Sen. Harvey Peeler, R-Cherokee, a longtime Sanford ally who this year became frustrated at Sanford’s refusal to take federal stimulus money. “You can see it in his eyes and his body language. I’m concerned about his mental well-being.”
John Crangle, executive director of Common Cause South Carolina, called Sanford “delusional” and said it was obvious the governor has “serious mental problems.”
“The idea that he could carry on this relationship and at the same time be governor, run the Republican governor’s association and have presidential aspirations, it shows an individual who has lost contact with reality,” said Crangle, who has worked as a divorce lawyer. “He sees no limitations. He can do what he wants.”
One prominent Republican who is close to Sanford and has been in regular contact with him also has questioned the governor’s well-being. “When your support is evaporating but your resolve (to stay in office) is increasing, that’s a bad combination,” said the source, who did not want to be identified.
Peeler cites the governor’s mental state as one more reason he should resign. Crangle said Sanford should at least take a leave of absence and get a psychiatric evaluation.
The state Constitution has measures for removing a mentally unstable governor, but that’s not likely to happen in this case, observers said.
Still, people are talking.

I just read a story that was an alert to my email box of a new posting from Huffpo. Douglas MacKinnon (Former Press Secty. to Bob Dole ) has an article being all defensive about why people on the Left are attacking Palin. He asks this question..
——————————–
“Which brings me to a question I’ve been asking for months of my liberal friends: Why do so many on the left have such an unhinged hatred of this woman? Why do so many alleged feminists and female members of the mainstream media openly and gleefully despise Palin?”
———————————-
I guess if he was a Woman and his rights were being taken away he would be mad.
If he was a Native Alaskan and had to choose between food or fuel to survive… he might be upset.
If His daughter was being told educated about Sex Education and told use only abstinence (and no other choices ) but was bombarded by the Sexy Candies commercials with a totally opposite message… he might be upset.
Way too many reasons to despise Sarah Palin. Liar,Hypocrite AND GRIFTER… works for me.
You can read the whole story. Obviously… he doesn’t have her as HIS Governor.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/douglas-mackinnon/palin-vanity-fair-envy-an_b_224632.html
Kathleen Parker wrote that following the election, Sarah Palin received boxes of invitations to give speeches and interviews. Yet, the boxes remained unopened. We’ve seen only a few interviews that Sarah has given. (Vanity Fair doesn’t count; she didn’t agree to be interviewed by them). I can’t believe that a future presidential candidate gave interviews to People Magazine and Runners World. I think that we should help Sarah by offering suggestions for other places to give interviews. (She might not remember all of newspapers and magazines after meeting Katie Couric). For example:
Guns and Ammo: suggested photo: Sarah wrapped in flag, blasting target
Family Circle: suggested feature: moose stew and moose burgers
Toastmasters Magazine: memorable one liners from recent speeches
Wired Magazine: best tweets and emails
Parents Magazine (you can fill in the blank)
Soap Opera Digest (you can fill in the blank)
Regarding the RW “flag” photo. I am glad the editor chose to use the photo no matter how poor a decision it was. If they had edited it out we would have never known about it. Bottom line is Sarah should have refused to pose with it and explained to the idiots on the photo shoot why she was refusing.
Instead, in her typical non-thinking, uneducated fashion, she poses like the high school queen, with the flag denoting her son’s service in the background, while desecrating the American flag. The same person who spent the entire presidential campaign questioning whether those not supporting her were REAL Americans.
Instead of going after RW, I think it would be better to get that “flag” image plastered over the MSM for the Fourth of July.

Maybe Dr.CBJ is gonna get the job………..
I think Palin is a sociopathic liar, if there is such a thing.
It’s beyond she doesn’t care if it’s a lie to get what she wants (Pathological and narcissistic). It’s almost like she doesn’t even acknowledge them as lies. I think she actually believes what she says after she repeats it a few times. And I’ll bet a lie detector would show she was telling the truth, even if it was a proven lie. Because she believes it. Magical thinking. Whatever.
I had a kid in my chorus once. He would never shut up. Literally. He was constantly talking to his neighbors whether they were listening to him or not. In fact, he seemed to be oblivious to whether anyone was listening to him or not. It was a non-stop constant chatter. Once I stood right in front of him and waited for him to finally realize I was there. The class was laughing at him because the knew. So he stops and says “What?” I said “You’re talking.” He said no he wasn’t. I said I stood right there and watched him. He said “I wasn’t talking. I was just saying.” I said “saying” is talking”. He said “I was just telling..” “Telling is “talking”. The guy would never acknowledge that he was “talking” in class. And I think he truly believed he wasn’t talking.
Call it sociopathic or whatever.
That’s how Palin is with lies. She’s not lieing. She’s just saying. Or telling. Whatever. She doesn’t believe that leaving out a detail is a lie. She doesn’t believe that giving the “impression” of something and allowing people to come to the wrong conclusion is a lie. It isn’t ignorance and it isn’t denial. It’s something much more disturbing.

I just put up a post at PA that lists what I consider to be the four biggest whoppers either told by Palin this past week, or that have come out this past week, that she had told earlier.

Hard feelings have emerged. Belligerent, defensive missives from Palin’s office include statements urging Alaskans to rise up in a “backlash” against citizens filing ethics complaints and ridiculing lawmakers for criticizing her Lower 48 trips. “We did not anticipate that the governor’s political opponents would want their hands held in the final hours of the session,” an April 13 press release said.
During the legislative session, Palin even came to the House speaker’s office and scolded his top aide. It was “a terrible breach of respect of the Legislature by Gov. Palin. This kind of lack of decorum has never happened before,” opined the Alaska Legislative Digest, a newsletter co-written by a former House speaker.
If the video was not SarahPac – how the hell did they get the photos that were (I’m sure) paid for by the State of Alaska. Who was the photographer? It’s a complete mix of state funds with national campaign benefits.
So much of that “passport stamp/foreign policy” trip is questionable. Where is the fundraiser for soldiers vacation travel?

Butler said he suspects Wooley’s departure may have been related to conflicts between Palin’s anti-abortion views and state health staff’s reluctance to present medical information they believed was inaccurate about a bill requiring parental consent for abortion.
“I know there was some concern about the parental consent for abortion issue, there was a lot of discussion about the role of Public Health in testifying to deliver the administration’s statements,” Butler said.
The parental consent bill stalled in the Legislature, with some members publicly questioning Palin’s commitment to advancing the bill after Department of Health and Social Services staff failed to show up to testify in its favor.
Rep. Lindsey Holmes, D-Anchorage, an abortion rights advocate in the Legislature, said she also believes Palin’s attempt to get support for her anti-abortion views played a role in Wooley’s departure.
Holmes said Wooley’s view was “I can go so far as being neutral,” but would not support a bill she thought could present a danger to minors seeking abortions.

Anyone want to claim that the ADN isn’t in the tank for Palin now????
fawnskin: Please explain to me what happened. You can PM me – samper.
NO! I said NOTHING about Mudflats.
I went to the “Contact” page of RW and sent the note. The first, disrespectful reply came back from Remy, to which I replied.
Going back to read from Fawn down… just wanted to get these first answers out.
Oh, AustinTx: I don’t really have room for Ruthie. Maybe you do? (haven’t read article yet, but title is telling!)
Jane, I don’t think it’s ironic, I think it’s immoral and cruel hearted. And THIS is happening right now??? How outrageous!!! and no, I’m sure Scarah wouldn’t dare show her face at this event which should have been canceled, IMO.
from Jane @ Anonymous bloggers blog……..
Politicians and lobbyists from around the United States wine and dine and go fishing for Kings each year at the Kenai Classic. A couple hours from now (noon Thursday) everyone will be getting their pictures taken with their Kings that they caught on the Kenai River. Usually there are several US Senators, a bunch of State officials and lobbyists. Don Young was this year’s speaker. I guess the Governor isn’t there but I wouldn’t be surprised if Parnell is. From ADN’s article “Don Young to attend Kenai Classic Banquet”:
“The event has long attracted political power brokers from around the country who socialized and trolled for salmon during the annual fundraiser.”
I think it is so ironic that while people on the Yukon aren’t allowed to subsistence fish for Kings and seem to have a lot of difficulty even being heard by their state government, a couple hundred politicians from around the United States and Alaska are getting together, having a great time catching kings, raising funds for Kenai River preservation, and networking among themselves.
austintx–oh, good point, though we do stick to the no mixing politics with religion thing pretty strictly in our church!
It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas in July…

I haven’t followed closely other than you and others have emailed RW. But, if Mudflats has come up and no one specifically said the blog name, it is easy enough to find it as people have posted the text of their emails, his responses, his name and info, and upon his doing a search, Mudflats will appear.
InJuneau: I agree with austintx! If you had just explained the situation, you’d probably have been sainted right then and there!
Palin wrapped in a flag: DESECRATION OF AN ICONIC SYMBOL OF **MY** COUNTRY! Kind of makes me giggle about the whole photoshop poutrage. What she has done is a zillion times worse, imho. Secessionist that she is and all.
Throwing Remy under the bus: Mixed feelings. You KNOW SP won’t read anything from pajama clad bloggers that is “against” her, so why bother, which is why I asked the RW use their contacts to convey the message.
That said, he is STILL responsible for posting egregious photos on the internet and is continuing to pass the buck to the photo editor, when he has the final word on what goes online. He could have chosen to do the first 6 photos and left the 7th for the print edition ONLY, which would only be seen by the print readership.
MSNBC picked this up this morning, so millions are now aware. It’s not just me/us.
I still haven’t gotten around to pulling together the entire conversation I had with him and promise to do so, but suffice it to say he’s an idiot. He really doesn’t deserve compassion or safety from the masses. He’s kind of like Ziegler… cocky with no justification for being so.
Does anyone know if you can put a stop payment on a cashier’s check issued from a bank?
Accepted a cashier’s check from Washington Mutual for my car. When I got to my credit union, they said the check was good and there were funds in the account, but I still had to wait 5 days for it to ‘clear’ because the Washington Mutual branch was out of state.
So….is there still a danger that there can be a stop payment put on a cashier’s check? I thought they were as good a cash money.
Anyone? Bueller?
is this a run round or what, lol and where is that spokesperson who started working almost a month ago, is he gone already? Any word from Moller?
from the Juneau Empire article……glad the doc was willing to speak up, thank you Dr. Butler!
“Wooley declined to comment, but told division staff her departure was “per Governor Palin’s request” in an e-mail announcing her departure.
Palin spokeswoman Sharon Leighow denied the governor was involved in Wooley’s departure and deferred further comment to Commissioner Bill Hogan of the Department of Health and Social Services, who declined to comment through a department spokeswoman.”
I’ve had one bothersome gnat flying about my head. Does anyone else remember any politician in the world asking for children to donate to a magical mystery legal fund that she originally had valued at 1 million or more dollars?
Who else besides our own “It Came From Wasilla” has asked people who have already donated to her fund to donate for their CHILDREN? Shameless – This is only one iota of why Alaska needs an Alaskan political intervention. I can’t think of a more shameful maneuver by any Alaskan Governor, EVER, also. I also think that since they ARE represented, it would be more constructive to contact their representatives about specific issues than to stand out in the park preaching to the choir.
One of our local organizers got a few chuckles when she was quoted saying that she wanted our government to go back to what it was at a date that was not only before women’s suffrage, but even before passage of the bill of rights. I can just imagine how unhappy she would be if we took away her 1st and 2nd amendment rights and the right to vote, also.

Cashier’s check are suppose to be like cash. The person who had it made out had to pay cash for it. This is why I am worried about CD sending the SOA a cashiers check through the mail. It means she has no witness or receipt for the SOA receiving it. They could say there was nothing in the envelope. I think she should take in to the Anchorage office, get a receipt and let them mail it to Juneau or she could even give them a stamped envelope to put it in.

Cashier checks are a lot like cash, but because they can be forged, banks do sometimes put a hold on them. You can not put a stop payment on them, but the bank can take the money back out of your account if it turns out the check is not valid. That is very very rare.
Called the credit union.
Was told that at the branch manager’s discretion, any amount over $2500 has to be held for “clearance”.
I’ll be calling the head office to ask why my “cash” is being “floated.
Thanks everyone for your advice.
I take it there is no way this check can be “stopped” since I was told that there was money in the account the check was drawn on when I deposited it.
I usually just lurk but I want to thank you all for all of the links & commentary! And AKM too for all of her great posts that get us all together.

McCain/Palin want to kick some ass over emails recently made public that were written 8 months ago. Yeah, right… an old man and a beauty queen are going to kick ass. They will be shot down in flames! The PROBLEM is that the emails are TRUE. They don’t want the TRUTH to get out. What does that say about our “future prez palin”?
A bank is earning interest on its customers certified funds and not allowing the customer access to them. Even a regular check clears overnight these days, no matter where it’s from!
Blago’s hair couldn’t help him beat Palin as nuttiest wackjob in the news this year.
Palin is being groomed for “higher office”, yet NO ONE has seen her with an Economics or Foreign Policy book in her hands, a tuition bill for Geography 101 at the Community College or a copy of the Constitution.
Tea Parties abound this weekend and hopefully austintx will get photos of Joe the Plumber, who, by all counts, really has NOTHING to say. Taxation without representation only happens to DC residents. There was a big to do about it not too long ago… can’t remember the details, but I guess they have huge fed taxes, but no rep (or rep not in keeping with the states) in Congress. OK, they aren’t technically a “state”, but if they pay fed taxes (some of the highest in the country), they should be represented in Congress equally to the rep of the states.
Eagle can’t get the DOT to provide gravel on which to place their homes, time is running short, and Palin isn’t stepping in with her usual demanding tone. NIIIIIIICE!
Am I up to speed?
I can’t get a THING done, trying to keep up with all this!
@ mlaiuppa
Your cashier’s check is just fine – there is no way to stop pay. You are dealing with the “new and improved Wa Mu” after being taken over by CitiCorp. They took the friendliest, most efficient banking company and are determined to make them suck just as much as everything else CitiCorp touches. Problems abound because of the takeoever – and they make the customers wait on everything now because they haven’t turned the WaMu system totally into the CitiCorp system between states. And they are completely snotty about it.
@ Dr. Patois
Celtic Diva’s money will be just fine! She’s sending return receipt requested, and YES, you can track a cashier’s check to prove it’s been cashed. mlaiuppa…. A few things I know from some recent transactions. There is alot of people that can manufacture these things as a way to steel money. It is a pretty common forgery these days I guess. Also out of state checks can be held longer. Most likely the bank does use those funds in there balance a few days before they release it. Is it a 5 day hold or up to 5 day hold and will be in your account the minute it clears?

It shows up in the account now. But I’m told I can’t draw on it for 5 business days. Because I deposited it late Tuesday and Friday is a holiday, that means it doesn’t “clear” until Thursday, July 9.
According to them the check was good. They checked the account it was drawn on and there was money in the account. That would be the Washington Mutual bank in Delaware that issued the cashier’s check.
What are they expecting? That Washington Mutual in Delaware will go bankrupt in four days? Or that a stop payment will be made. If it can’t be stopped, I don’t understand the delay. A cashier’s check is supposed to be same as cash. Isn’t it?

Congressional Republicans were dealt a setback Thursday in their attempt to punish Democrats in swing districts for voting for climate change legislation in the House last week.
WDBJ-TV, a Roanoke television station, will not air a National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) ad attacking freshman Rep. Tom Perriello (D-Va.), citing factual inaccuracies, according to Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee communications director Jen Crider. A source familiar with the station’s decision confirmed Crider’s account; WDBJ general manager Jeff Marks confirmed that the ad would not run, but declined to say why.

I’m so glad she won the Sitting Duck Award. Yeah!!! Now she can break out the tiara!
I believe that the RW article was an ingenious set-up and lampoon of GINO. The questions were designed to invoke idiotic answers for which she vacuously provided.
The pictures were nothing short of soft-porn. The only thing missing in the picture with the Fluffer draped over the flag holding a blackberry are a couple of tea bag pasties!

I work for a bank. Funds availability is governed by something called Regulation CC. I have to take training on it every year, and I still can’t remember all of the ins and outs. Unfortunately, a cashier’s check clears the same as any other kind of check, and it’s legal to hold funds for an out-of-state check for up to five business days. Reg CC was actually put in place to prevent banks from placing unfairly long holds, and brought some consistency and uniformity to the process. When I lived in California as a student, B of A used to put a 14-day hold on checks from Iowa (my home state). So it’s really, really annoying, but completely legal.
Okay, I know everyone is jumping to the new thread but when you come back, here is a link to a story you’ve read but with some very funny posts. (some are over the top)

The following is a portion of an email that the online editor of Runners World sent to me in response to the “flag” photo of Palin’s.
“I am the online editor of RW and had absolutely nothing to do with the story or the photo shoot in question. I might humbly suggest writing a letter to the editor, and/or our photo editor, and/or Governor Palin’s office. (From what I gather from our photo dep’t, the flag was Gov. Palin’s idea. Not ours.)
For what it’s worth, the photo you speak of was one of many, many dozens taken during that shoot. We didn’t put it in the magazine, and only included it in an online photo slideshow almost as an afterthought.”
—————————–
It’s no surprise that the flag pose was Palin’s idea. She’s ever the politician with an eye for the main chance, even if it means pimping out the American flag in an athletic magazine. She’s not an Olympic athlete running in front of the grandstands with the flag over her shoulders….She’s a failed politician using the flag as a prop to give her more patriotic gravitas.
It’s also interesting that the flag photo is apparently not in the magazine…only in the online photo slideshow. You know….that same online venue where political battles rage everyday. I’m afraid that RW knew exactly what they were doing in waving that flag in front of the online combatants.
I would bet a bundle that Palin had a requirement that she got to choose her photos out of those “many, many dozens” taken during the shoot…All those photos had the same aura to them. Probably a static mental image that she has of herself.
Anyhow….the online editor of RW was cordial in his response. His suggestion to contact the magazine itself or Palin makes sense.

Also she was using SOA pics, is megamouth going to have van flea send her a warning letter???
I heard there was trouble with the Staple Center. But then, I’ve heard ALOT about MJ today. Who knows what’s right?
OK, so the estate will have to pay for security, etc. But they also have to realize that the reason they are ALL so rich today is because of the fans. To make them pay to see the casket is appalling.
There will be plenty o’ cash to go around when all is said and done now that MJ isn’t out there spending it (but continues to rake it in). They don’t need $25/head to see a closed casket in a stadium.

July 1, 2009, Anchorage, Alaska – The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved the State of Alaska’s total request for additional communities to receive disaster relief funds for the spring flooding event.
The original federal disaster declaration did not include Individual Assistance for several communities as the flood event was ongoing at the time of the federal disaster declaration. Federal Individual Assistance pays a maximum of $30,300 per affected household, whereas State of Alaska Individual Assistance pays $5,000 per affected household.
“This is great news for the members of the communities in rural Alaska that were left off of the original disaster declaration,” Governor Palin said. “This year’s spring flood was one of the worst on record, and we need to act swiftly to make sure people can rebuild before winter.”
Disaster recovery teams, consisting of members of the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, and FEMA, are out in Bethel and the surrounding villages today. More trips are planned next week to help those people who have experienced flood damages get the necessary paperwork completed to expedite funding assistance.
The formal regions, and key communities, added onto the federal disaster declaration are:
* Lower Yukon Regional Education Attendance Area (REAA) for Individual Assistance, including Emmonak, Russian Mission, Kotlik, and Alakanuk;
* Yupiit REAA for Individual Assistance (already approved for public assistance), including Akiak, Akiachak, and Tuluksak;
* Lower Yukon REAA for Public Assistance, including Emmonak, Russian Mission, Kotlik, and Alakanuk;
* Yukon-Koyukuk REAA for Public Assistance (already approved for Individual Assistance), including Tanana.

So it may make sense that it was held.I have been informed in the past that a cashiers check is more like a money order than cash.
oh my, this was quick, eh? she’s gonna stomp that bill right through even IF people quit their state jobs and make her look bad. The Lt. got to carry the ball, lol.
from the state site.
“(July 2, 2009 Anchorage, Alaska) – Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell today certified an initiative that would require parental notice or consent before a minor under 18 years old could have an abortion, unless the teen submits a notarized statement that she is a victim of abuse by a parent or guardian, the teen convinces a court to bypass notice, or in the clinical judgment of the doctor, there is a medical emergency. This certification allows the initiative sponsors to proceed with gathering signatures required to place the measure on the ballot.
Lieutenant Governor Parnell’s decision to certify the initiative, known as 09PIMA, was supported by a Department of Law legal opinion. The Department of Law’s opinion, dated July 2, 2009, concluded that the bill and application are in the proper form, and that the application complies with the constitutional and statutory provisions governing the use of the initiative.
Petition booklets will be prepared by the Alaska Division of Elections. The sponsors will have one year to gather at least 32,734 valid signatures, composed of at least seven percent of the last general election turnout from thirty election districts in order for the proposed bill to be placed on a ballot.
The lieutenant governor’s letter to the initiative sponsors, the Department of Law’s legal opinion, and the Division of Elections memorandum are available online at: http://initiatives.alaska.gov. “

Closet Mudpup @ 241 Maybe AKM will do a post on this initiative and explain why this is a BAD IDEA and can backfire and hurt some minors.
Many girls don’t live in the model perfect, loving, accepting family. An attempt to get parental consent or giving parental notice can cause some girls to get beaten up, hit, harassed or have their life made h@ll.
This is an opportunity to educate the public.
However, I’m sure Rev. Prevo and his buddies will be vocally supporting it.
Is there a story in this? (from the state site)
“The corporation has financed its education loan program by issuing tax-exempt revenue bonds in the capital market. ASLC has been unable to issue bonds due to the catastrophic capital market.
“This bill ensures Alaska’s students will not be left out in the cold despite the current economic downturn,” Governor Palin said. “Without this legislation, no Alaska student loans could be made this fall.”
House Bill 172, sponsored by the governor, enables the Commissioner of Revenue to provide a bridge loan and directly invest in the corporation’s education loans. HB 172 also creates a credit enhancement facility to assist ASLC in the issuance of bonds during the current economic crisis when, without this facility, it would be uneconomical to issue bonds.
AKM…..here is a great story for ya !

This is the text of the Parental Notification initiative
http://www.elections.alaska.gov/petitions/09PIMA.pdf
paraphrasing one section:
The unemancipated minor female can get a notarized statement of the abuse by getting confirmation from a 21-year-old (up) sibling, a cop, a social worker (who has already investigated), a grandparent or a step parent.
—-
The female that is anticipating real abuse after the notification happens is sure out of luck.
I think this is an instance of Tank being wrong. I know of no cream that can remove a tatoo.
Levi has two choices. Laser it off, or add more ink to obliterate it. Or he can wear a big, honkin’ ring on that hand to cover it up.

I can’t speak to the issue of Samaritan’s Purse being in Eagle, but I can and will state that the Mennonites are nothing short of awesome! They descended on Omaha in the wake of a major tornado in the mid-70′s and, saying little, went right to work. They worked like fiends for weeks and their help was accepted with gratitude. I would be willing to guess that the elders in Eagle will find them to be quite similar to themselves. They don’t preach their way of life. They just live it.
from Andrew Sullivan’s blog:
“Palin is not a serious candidate for the presidency. She had to go home and study and spend a lot of time on issues in which she was not adept last year, and she hasn’t. She has to stop speaking in clichés and platitudes. It won’t work. It could work for eight weeks if you’re the number two candidate, as she was last year. But even so, she got singed a lot in that campaign. You cannot sustain a campaign of platitudes and clichés over a year and a half if you’re running for the presidency,”- Charles Krauthammer.
What’s the deal with the State of Alaska placing a moratorium on senior health services due to non-compliance of federal regulations? No new assessments for senior home health services allowed while a backlog gets caught up on. That, unfortunately leaves a lot of people in need with assessments pending not allowed to have those assessments made.

Exactly! As a long time runner, Palin’s reference to throbbing thighs in her RW interview struck me as completely off.
Runners I know comment on their quads or hamstrings, not their thighs. And the associated descriptive words are usually “burning” or “heavy” or “tight”….
I assume she actually runs, and so a logical conclusion is that she deliberately sexed up her comments when she said the following:
“…I knew my thighs were going to just throb….”

Miss Demeanor; after reading that RW article, I’m having a hard time grasping all that info too, like saying she sometimes runs at 11:00 pm and in the winter months, would run in the dark. I guess everyone has their ideas, but my mother always taught us to protect ourselves, be wise, smart, don’t be outdoors late at night alone.
Some of these statements in that article sound a bit far-fetched. The needing to sweat, throb and thrash to feel good for the day, maybe she just needs a hug.

I have a few answers for this guy:
#1. Because she’s an idiot (a term I used to reserve for Dubya)
#2. Because she doesn’t seem to care about anyone in Alaska except maybe the people who look and think (if she actually ever thinks) the way she does.
#3. Because she lies.
#4. Because it always has to be all about her.
#5. Because she cannot admit that she is a racist bigot.
#6. Because she wants to take my choice away.
#7. Because she seems to be living in the 1950′s in terms of women’s rights.
#8. Because I can’t stand her pouty, smirking face that belies the religious maniac behind it.
#9. Because she wants to push her agenda on all of us.
#10. Because she doesn’t take care of the people in her state (i.e. do her job).
#11. Because she makes bad choices in every sense of the word.
#12. Because she whines.
#13. Because she’s an idiot (oh yeah-that was #1)

The local TV station also did interviews in Marshall, AK where the villagers took things in their own hands and fished for King salmon illegally.
The comments on Ann Strongheart’s post about the Kenai Classic are all excellent ideas and have good descriptions of why the problems are so complicated in terms of escapement (how many fish make it up the river to spawn).
Each and every village along the Yukon from the ocean to the spawning streams is going to have the same problems.
I don’t know all of the answers and, as usual for me, I tend to get mad before I understand the whole picture. Regardless of the problems, the indigenous population needs to have more of a say in all of this. They are getting shut out by the big trawlers from Seattle. If the state wants to protect the salmon run they need to do something different. There is a reason that things are this bad.
And silly Lisa Murkowski and her trophy king on the Kenai had better be thinking that it can happen on the Kenai too. Of course the big-wigs and politicians will always get their fish. I think they should put those fish on ice and ship them to the villages so people can survive this winter.
And then get to work on some long-term solutions.
But that’s just me…
I hear ya about needing a moment of Zen after a crazy week so far. Beautiful photo!

The whole “McCain & Palin Authorized the Search of Emails to Find the Leak” story is just SO on the mark for Sarah! It’s the FIRST thing she wants to know if someone has crossed her – WHO? She’s walking right into the trap that will assist greatly in her undoing, a trap of her own making. She can’t let anything go!
Here’s what the fly on the wall reported back to me, buzzing wildly:
“JOHN? ARE YOU THERE JOHN? THIS IS SARAH!”
“I’m not deaf, Sarah – I’m just old and I can’t jog. What do you want?”
‘I WANT THE HEAD, AND THE BLOODY HANDS AND FEET OF THE PERSON WHO TOLD ON ME! YOU PROMISED YOU WOULD PROTECT ME! YOUR CAMPAIGN STAFFERS ARE EVIL, LIBERAL, BLOGGING, SNEAKY, JEALOUS AND I’M HOPPING MAD!”
“Oh, that stuff again? What’s it worth to you for me to give the OK to start the witch hunt? I’m kinda tired from wading in the creek right now. Witch hunting is exhausting.”
“OH JOHN YOU BIG JOKING YOU KNOW WHAT! ARE YOU TEASING ME?”
“No, wouldn’t dream of it. I’m as serious as a heart attack.”
“HEART ATTACK? DID i HEAR YOU SAY YOU WERE HAVING A HEART ATTACK? DAMN, WHY COULDN’T YOU HAVE DONE THAT DURING THE ELECTION? i WOULD BE QUEEN OF THE WORLD BY NOW!”
“No heart attack! Now I really want something in return for the witch hunt, you bi1tch. What’s it gonna be?”
“I’ll GIVE YOU MY NEXT BORN GRANDCHILD. I HAVE TOO MANY KIDS TO KEEP UP WITH THESE DAYS ANYWAY. I HAVE JUST ENOUGH OF THEM TO BABYSIT THE OTHER ONES PLUS THEIR OWN AND IT GETS CONFUSING AROUND HERE ABOUT WHO IS DOING WHAT. ALSO, TOO THE GIRLS ARE GETTING TOO PRETTY AND I HAVE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO ABOUT THAT, ALSO, TOO BECAUSE THEY ARE GETTING IN MY WAY NOW.”
“Oh no – not more kids! They’ll just start blogging and they might turn liberal. I’ll just do it as a favor this one time so that you don’t throw me under the bus right away, OK?”
“OK JOHN! WANNA GO JOGGING???????? HAAAAAAHHHAAAA!”
@#272 justafarmer – no it’s not just you – I think everyone has gotten a lot heavier over the last 20 yrs (including the young ones!) and they are trying to flatter them/us… I’m fairly small – wore 7/8 when I was 110#s & now wear 5/6 which can be loose sometime at 125#s…
I can’t believe I just owned up to that…
That was so good Martha!
FINALLY FOUND IT~~~
I’ve been going through old files looking for the name of this video and finally found it. (now that I see the name of it I think ..duh why didn’t I just try that, but I had thought it was named something totally unrelated. Turns out that unrelated name is how I found the video in the first place, and that is what I was remembering)
AIP Meeting in October of 2007 with Dexter and Lynette Clark. At the 6 minute mark, Dexter is telling everyone that Palin was indeed a member of the AIP before she became Mayor of Wasilla.
Now take into account that this was before she was considered even an option as the running mate for McCain, and they are talking about this at their meeting.

All this talk of throbbing thighs is bunk. Nobody gets “runner’s throb”.
She made it up. Like she makes everything else up.
#280 – lovemydogs – Nice list. Here’s my crack at answering those questions:
1) I become somewhat “unhinged” when anyone would like to cram their religious views down my throat with legislation. I’m entitled to my own religious views, thanks to our very wise founding fathers, and I take them seriously.
2) When the most qualified person is a woman, real feminists want her to get the job. When a woman who isn’t qualified gets it, they know it undermines the credibility of all women. A woman who has worked hard to get where she is doesn’t want people wondering if she got her job based on her merits, or if it was something else.
Eye on You #304:
I am certain Lynette Clark walked that back later.
That one statement, later retracted, is the only claim I have ever seen that Sarah was a member of the AIP. We are better off talking about her close association with AIP and AIP members, and Todd’s membership for 7 years, instead of making a claim that is easily deniable about her alleged membership.

Isn’t it?
*******
I’m sure you have this resolved by now, but my sister is correct. This is about WaMu, a wonderful, customer-friendly bank, being eaten by Chase/Stanley because of the financial meltdown. I was a happy WaMu customer for almost 10 years. The only bank I ever loved, much less liked. After some similar problems with check holds when Chase finally got around to its California branches (they’ve been screwing with the various states one state at a time), I closed my account and told them in no uncertain terms that I wasn’t going to be a customer of Chase, because they are just like every other sucky bank on the planet. My husband has stuck with them for now, but has given them an earful. He may switch to a local credit union soon.
How interesting.
I had an AARP credit card through Chase. They upped the interest rate for no reason whatsoever (I know, we’ve all experienced this from the meltdown) despite the fact that I am steadily employed, not about to lose my job and pay on time and have never been late or overstepped my limit.
I’m paying the Chase card off with the money I made from the car and closing the account. I’m just waiting for the money to clear to do it. And I’m pi$$sed that I have to wait an extra 5 days (with interest) to do it.
I’ll only have one credit card left after that. Through my credit union. I has a fixed rate.
