Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Open Thread – Happy Independence Day!

I thought about posting a picture of fireworks, but after almost two decades in Alaska, I no longer associate them with the 4th of July.  We’re only two weeks past the longest dayof the year, so with no adequate darkness, fireworks hold little appeal.  In Alaska, the ones we really enjoy come on New Year’s Eve.

That said, I thought I’d post the flag.  Not the kind made in China that you wear on a lapel pin because you’re supposed to, or the kind you wrap yourself in to make a point.  But the kind that represents the ideal of a republic “if we can keep it,” as Benjamin Franklin once said.

And here’s one of my favorite quotes, from Justice William O. Douglas to keep in mind as we contemplate our fragile republic.

“As nightfall does not come all at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight when everything remains seemingly unchanged. And it is in such a twilight that we all must be aware of change in the air—however slight—lest we become unwilling victims of the darkness.”

Happy Independence Day Mudflatters, wherever you are.

I always see forms and colours when reading a text. OK, yesterday, those colours were enhanced with a serious intake of caipirinas, made with the local fermented sugar cane, tough stuff, but necessary to celebrate THE resignation. So this is my way of thanking you, AKM, and your friends who have got the country listening, at last.

From (south) Buffalo NY , where the fireworks have been going off all week and have today escalated to “storming of Normandy” levels since noon.

I’m not a fan of the “blow things up cuz it’s the 4th and cuz…well… we really like to blow things up” frame of mind but there were a few moments today that the sound of the fireworks did coincide with my personal feelings about the fact that citizen journalists are at least partially responsible for yesterdays unfoldings.

I have a feeling that Ben Franklin would be smirking and getting a bit of a “boo-flippin-yah” from the fact that Palin actually mentions that bloggers drove her to dive .

I’ve lately been mentally playing with the question of : What would the U.S. look like today if there had been an internet back then?

Sorry to bring up Palin, but it’s also a good day to chuckle!

I say, she was PISSED. Here’s why. There was a fly following her around and I was the recipient of a story it wildly buzzed at me (comment 5, Sitting Duck thread). This has been a very busy little fly and it’s ba-ack!

“Mo-om… the phone is for you. It’s JO-OHN.”

“TELL HIM I JUST GOT BACK FROM KOSOVO AND I STINK AND NEED A SHOWER SO I CAN BASH SOME BLOGGERS WHO’VE BEEN REALLY BAD TO ME WHILE I WAS GONE!”

“He says: GET ON THE PHONE NOW! Mom.”

“GRRRR – I’M HOPPING MAD AGAIN JOHN! DID YOU SEE THOSE DESECRATED INTERNET PHOTO THINGS!”

“Sarah, calm down. We need to talk.”

    “WHA-ATTT?”

“Do you remember that witch hunt you wanted me to OK over the campaign staff who leaked unflattering info to the press?”

“OH HURRY UP – OF COURSE I REMEMBER!”

“Well it stirred up some emails that have ended your national political career.”

“OH GIVE ME A BREAK! IT’S THOSE DEMOCRAT EVIL BLOGGERS AT IT AGAIN!”

“No Sarah. The emails released showed that you wanted to lie to REAL AMERICA about Todd being part of the AIP by accident. Even our dumbest supporters immediately asked someone to help them find “the google” and they found a copy of Alaska’s Voter Registration form on-line. It wasn’t an accident.”

    “SO???”

“You can’t lie about the AIP to the public or to our national security. I can’t be associated with you because I’m a big war hero / POW and it made YOU sound unpatriotic and un-American to lie about the AIP so glibly. It made you look really, really bad. The AIP have a website and everything.”

    “SO???”

“Sarah, do you have a fork?”

    “YEAH!”

“Stick yourself, and find yourself DONE on the national political scene.”

“FINE! IF I CAN’T BE PRESIDENT, I QUIT! I NEVER LIKED ANY OF YOU ANYWAY AND NO ONE IS TELLING ME WHAT TO DO, EVER, EVER AGAIN!”

“Quit, what? You never announced your intent to run for Pres?”

“I QUIT EVERYTHING BECAUSE I HATE BLOGGERS! SO TAKE THAT, ALASKA! UP YOUR NOSE!”

that’s funny Martha, and could be very close to the truth.

I think everything “she did” snowballed on her and she couldn’t handle her own sh*t. There is no one to blame but Scarah herself. We know that, she’ll never admit it though. I think she did a typical narcissistic impulsive meltdown thing. She had to save herself from being revealed.

I’ll be perfectly happy if she stays out of politics. And I’d be happy if one of her cover ups comes out too.

I wondered today if perhaps Beverly Wooley might be sueing her for firing her, her last day was Wed., that may have put her over the top. Another troopergate nightmare with no McCain campaign to protect her. It could cost the state a lot of money too. It could be she agreed to step down if it was dropped? That would be doing the state a favor, lol.

I definitely think we don’t know the big kahuna story yet. She’s not just quitting a job she doesn’t like. She’s giving up all that executive priviledge, which she has been using to protect herself. Something is up.

Here’s the thing about resigning. George W. Bush had low approval ratings, Dick Cheney even lower. And things certainly weren’t going their way at all, especially Nov.Dec.2008 and beginning of January 2009. They did not quit. They stuck it out (I don’t know why, probably because they didn’t like the sound of President Pelosi). I can’t think of any politicians who retire mid office unless there is a scandal, major health concern or the old “I need to spend more time with my family.” Even sleazy Gov.Sanford is sticking it out! Larry Craig didn’t quit. Sen.Vitter didn’t quit. I can’t believe it’s that easy to get under someone’s skin and drive them from office. One of the many things I wonder about her is how she used “title”, yesterday and on this facebook post today, as interchangeable for the position and responsiblity of governor. She really does think of it like a beauty contest.

OK, just sayin’ – ALL of the national based pundit / news / correspondent stories that I read yesterday and today about Palin have missed the mark! They’re still confused by her!

Her speech and setting were very Alaskan. I didn’t even think twice about the geese in the background. This was actually probably the best setting we’ve Alaskans seen her in, in a very long time. This is more what we are used to. We waved to the previous democratic pres while he was jogging with his dog. Even Murkowski, crook as he was, was very jolly like, red faced and could be very friendly to everyone (one of the reasons he won). We flew in coach with our Gov. Sheffield. Other govs were neighbors, involved in the community in other ways, and approachable. We teased Gov Hickel because he drove his car to work from the mansion to the Capitol, all one and half blocks.

I didn’t like listening to her, but she was really more of her “old self”. She didn’t care that she sounded folksy, she didn’t care a whit about the geese (least they weren’t bloody), she only had a few commissioners and family there, it was informal. The only thing that wasn’t the old Sarah was the fancier dress. She cared not one whit that she used a magnet in her speech. It was all extremely folksy (minus the blamey snark) and Alaskan.

Not the content, I’m just describing the scene and setting. She really is thumbing her nose up at some one, or some thing, national. She wants to go back to her good ‘ol Alaskan house in Wasilla. She hates Juneau anyway. What’s the point? This doesn’t mean she doesn’t have plans, but they will be formed around keeping Wasilla as home base.

@Isabella, “Year of Jubilee” This phrase in Sarah’s twitter really bothered me. I have heard “jubilee” used in the sense of “25 Jubilee” meaning 25th anniversary. When I googled “Year of Jubilee” up comes a long biblical reference. It is an event which occurs only once in a lifetime, only once every 50 years, a Time of Celebration.

According to Wikipedia: Year of Jubilee is a special year for the remission of sins and universal pardon where debts are forgive, slaves and prisoners freed, and the mercies of God would be particularly manifest.

If Sarah meant to say “50th Anniversary of the Alaskan Statehood” she chose an especially religious, biblical phrase to express her local pride. On the other hand, considering the poor choice of language in yesterday’s speech, it makes sense.

Lame Duck – the term was originally an investment term. It came from the London Stock Market and referred to investors who were unable to pay their debts.
“Do you know what a Bull, and a Bear, and a Lame Duck are?”
In 1771, David Garrick, in Prologue to Foote’s Maid of Bath wrote:
“Change-Alley bankrupts waddle out lame ducks!”
In 1772, the Edinburgh Advertiser included:
“Yesterday being the settling day for India stock, the bulls had a balance to pay to the bears to the amount of 23 per cent. Only one lame duck waddled out of the alley, and that for no greater a sum than 20,000.”

Hi all Mudpuppies nationwide and worldwide! Happy 4th of July to all of you. I love every one of you. We went through hell together in the long march since August 29th, 2008. Sheer f’**king hell. What a long strange trip it’s been!

Below is what I posted on AKM’s excellent article on Huffington Post last night. I am only posting it here because of the song link at the end. Some of you might like it. A nice little dance number for all of you after ten months of this hell.

Two great things came out of this ordeal:

    (1) Barack Obama was elected President of the United States and McLame and GINO were not – so there is a fighting chance for our country.

    (2) We all FOUND each other here in the amazing Mudflats!

    Enjoy the day today!

POSTED TO AKM’S COMMENT THREAD ON HER EXCELLENT ARTICLE ON HUFFINGTON POST 07/03/09 ON PCR-DAY (PALIN COSMIC RESIGNATION DAY)

    (TO AKM)

Beautifully written. Even a bit wistful after the great, sorry insane ordeal. We have all somehow survived as a nation since that fateful P-Day on August 29, 2008 that became a journey into national psychological disequilibrium. Kafka on a winter night could have never dreamed it up. The storm has now run it’s course. It was hard to grasp what she was in the American psyche. Her existence in our politics defied every political treatise on rationality since the Renaissance. it was disturbing. Nothing really fit at all.

I used to worry too like everyone else somehow sleeping like the restless Lady on the Titanic that had had that persistent premonition since South Hampton and slept fully clothed on the entire crossing. The silent voice always in my mind for everyone to keep the wooden stakes and hammers ready under the bed. But after yesterday I truly believe she is no Napoleon banished to Elbe after Fontainebleau. I think she is truly Ice Flow Barbie now. Her crimes against the Great Wolf Mother have been avenged in the Great White North. It is even Archetypal now. Even if she gets a show on Fox (her best move) she will now go to the Great Endless Night out under the canopy of stars to her political end.

July 25th, SP’s last day, is a Saturday. Mark your calendars to listen to Shannyn that night! I’d bet if we listen very carefully, we might hear champagne corks in the background!

I’ve had noise-works going off all day. My poor little girl kitty has gone into hiding in the closet in the room I’m in now. She’s protected, but still near Mommy. The noises just terrify her.

The municipal fireworks are over, so now it’s just the neighbors we have to worry about tonite. Our Mayor is going to PERSONALLY patrol the streets, along with police, to make sure our strict fireworks laws are adhered to. No exceptions this year… if you get caught, you’re going to jail for 90 days. Hopefully, that will make it a quieter night than last year. Just when I got to sleep, BANG. Over and over again. It was impossible last year.

Fun Fact: Francis Scott Key, who wrote the Star Spangled Banner, was born on August 1st. That’s MY birthday, also too! :-)

Stay safe, all… see you back here for Shannyn’s show!

I had no idea when I stumbled across the Mudflats last year after listening to Sarah Palin give her snarly snarky sneery speech which left me feeling oddly scared and nauseous and wanting to know more about this stranger in our midst what terrors and despair and flat out eye rollery we would share. Who knew what an amazing trip we would be taking.

I think your politics will still have many interesting things to offer, but I now look forward to hearing about Brian and Brenda and the twins, seeing pictures of flowers and mountains and reading stories about the little things that make up the lives of our Mudpuppy community.

I am sad to say I will not be able to join the Mudpuppy “Convention” on August 1! I have tickets to see the play Mary Stewart on Broadway on that day. Perhaps next time. But I certainly want to hear all about it and to see pictures of Brian in Times Square.

Gov. Palin’s legal counsel, Thomas Van Flein:

“To the extent several websites, most notably liberal Alaska blogger Shannyn Moore, are now claiming as “fact” that Governor Palin resigned because she is “under federal investigation” for embezzlement or other criminal wrongdoing, we will be exploring legal options this week to address such defamation. This is to provide notice to Ms. Moore, and those who re-publish the defamation, such as Huffington Post, MSNBC, the New York Times and The Washington Post, that the Palins will not allow them to propagate defamatory material without answering to this in a court of law.”

Newspapers write about “alleged” criminals and potential issues as rumors, and also try to verify everything., but this happens all the time. Does she really think that she can fight all the mainstream media wih VF. WOW what arrogance CD had a good discussion about possible issues still with ethics claims. She has thrown her family all over the place seeking publicity and now she’s upset. She should have said no to McClain and stayed home.

She is such a fraud and is pushing some outrageous nonsense of righteousness. I have been among many Christian groups and I have not seen anyone behave like her.

There was a lovely celebration of the 50th year since the flag of the United Sates of America was raised on July 4 , over it’s newest state, a couple blocks from me. I could hear all the speeches from my garden…

Nor did she show for the parade…

There are different standards to defame someone, depending upon if you are a public figure or a private citizen. I don’t know any attorney who would think that this is a legitimate lawsuit. It seems like nothing more than a preemptive attack (i.e. to scare Shannyn before she lets the cat out of the bag).

How can the Palins complain about all of their legal bills and complaints and then go out and add to them? This is ridiculous.

They don’t give a crap about their legal bills. They’ve got loads of cretins they can tap to pay for them.

I hope you will join me. Now is the time to rebuild and help our nation achieve greatness!

That is too cool – I had never heard that version of Lies. I always think of the Stones’ Lies from Some Girls when I hear that title. I got curious, Wikipedia even says:

“Lies” (The Knickerbockers song), a song by The Knickerbockers that is often mistaken for a lost Beatles track.

Good catch :) I love this place.

I see how this works, when citizens file ethics complaints they are “frivolous and wasteful”, but when someone dare speak out against the great and mighty Palin, she has her lawyer make a statement that they will sue.

I just read the following in a comment by “siamesein” on Huffington Post. I’ve not been able to find any place in anything Shannyn (or any other Alaska blogster) has written that comes close to what SPs lawyer is alleging – can’t find where they’ve stated the impending ‘shoe drop’ and/or any ‘reasons’ for said, is “fact”.

Do any of you have knowlege of what ‘statement of “fact”‘ SPs lawyer is talking about? [Or do Shannyn and the rest of the blogsters/blogs have a bang-up case to sue the pants off of him and SP for defamation of character...a _legitimate_ case (as differentiated from her perceived 'cases' of defamation)?] Thanks.

    ———-
The abruptness of her announcement and the mystery surrounding her plans has fed widespread speculation. But Palin attorney Thomas Van Flein on Saturday warned legal action may be taken against bloggers and publications that reprint what he calls fraudulent claims.

“To the extent several websites, most notably liberal Alaska blogger Shannyn Moore, are now claiming as ‘fact’ that Governor Palin resigned because she is ‘under federal investigation’ for embezzlement or other criminal wrongdoing, we will be exploring legal options this week to address such defamation,” Van Flein said in a statement. “This is to provide notice to Ms. Moore, and those who re-publish the defamation, such as Huffington Post, MSNBC, the New York Times and The Washington Post, that the Palins will not allow them to propagate defamatory material without answering to this in a court of law.”

Now who will shut up the other 50 million of us? That’s some serious overtime for her lawyers! http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/07/04/palin-facebook-message-sl_n_225772.html#postComment

Washington state is indeed one hour later than Alaska. Unlike Arizona, we go on PDT. Because of our latitude, fireworks up here start about 10pm. It is not dark then, but we can’t wait. Well, gang, check out Wonkette – “Insane Sarah Palin, Late At Night On July 4, Threatens To Sue Entire Internet, Via Twitter” at: http://wonkette.com/409650/insane-sarah-palin-late-at-night-on-july-4-threatens-to-sue-entire-internet-via-twitter

If Sarah thought AK bloggers were ‘meanies’, she hasn’t seen anything, yet.

Here’s a peek – “But, from other websites, we gather Palin’s lawyers plan lawsuits against MSNBC, the New York Times, the Huffington Post, the Washington Post, individual bloggers in Alaska, and other such anti-Palin forces such as “rain on your wedding day” and static cling…. Sarah Palin, a snowbilly grifter who spent her entire adult life desperately trying to become a Public Figure, apparently wants her attorneys to stupidly and pointlessly threaten American practitioners of free speech regarding our public figures and elected officials.”
