The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Open Thread

It was great fun being back on the Shannyn Moore Show on the 4th of July.  Mudflatters from across the globe tuned in.  I do love hearing your actual voices!  After Shannyn’s show was over, Mike Method took over with special guest CC, a progressive voice that is sorely missed on the airwaves these days.  It was great to see her sitting behind a microphone, and I snapped a couple shots before I left.

AKM, I read and commented on your latest article at HuffPo. I think you have it exactly right. Steve Schmidt had to intervene twice to stop Palin from overreacting to negative things being said about her. But Palin’s attorney has no reason to stop her, in fact gets paid to do what she wants.

It’s disturbing to see this is Palin’s pathology in action. This is why she could not let the Troopergate matter go. This is why she could not let the Dave Letterman joke incident go. This is why she can’t let photoshop pictures or internet rumors go. She has a specific emotional/mental problem that consumes her whenever someone crosses her. It’s ugly.

    S.C. governor had some sense

Across America people are up in arms about South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford having sex with some woman from Argentina. That’s not so bad. At least he has enough common sense to know that if he is going to have sex with someone, it will be a woman. You have to give him credit for that.

Ooh ooh, I think she should also sue that ‘vague feeling of unease when someone greets you by name and you recognize their face, but can’t remember their name.’ That one’s a real b*stard, it is.

Hmmm…left to go camping this weekend in the Adirondack mountains in NYS with no internet, phone service, newspapers, etc. So, I have spent the morning reading any and all news reports to catch up and finally just listenened to Palin’s speech for myself.

Her breathlessness, rate of speech, skeletal figure, jumping around really point to some type of addiction. I’m wondering if she isn’t headed to a rehab in the very near future. By resigning first she can blame it on a nervous breakdown caused by the media instead of a drug addiction. I’m wondering if the 5 votes for yes and hell yes had as much to do with “Mom, get some help!” as it was to step down from being Governor.

Sorry. Over there I have to rely on the HuffPo staff to moderate when I’m not around. It’s definitely more labor intensive than it is over here, but I really wanted this story to get sent to the top over there. I think it’s got a good start. Sarah sure likes to use kids as a way to get people on her side. I recall Troopergate involved a kid who was supposedly tasered. The Letterman joke incident was immediately interpreted by the Palins as ‘child rape’. The formula Palin uses is to first pretend to be outraged, then exaggerate a story of a kid being hurt in order to mobilize her followers.

    NICE JOB Dave!!!

This spring, as Palin was weighing whether to run for reelection in 2010, she turned to John P. Coale, a prominent Washington lawyer. He had helped her establish a political action committee and has become her political consigliere of sorts.

“She asked me, ‘Well, what do you think all this is? Why are all these people attacking me?’ ” Coale said. “I said to her: ‘Look, that’s what happens. They did it to Hillary [Rodham Clinton], and Hillary just pushed through it. It’s not going to really stop. . . . You just have to ignore it and move on.’ ”

Even talk show host David Letterman weighed in, joking that one of her daughters had gotten “knocked up” by baseball star Alex Rodriguez in New York.

That joke, which Palin criticized, helped persuade her to step down, Coale said.

Great article on HuffPo AKM! Sunday morning fun with the talking heads trying to make sense of Ex-GINO’s facebook entry. I always imagine when I see a man with one of those major comb-overs (like Trump maybe) that no one loves him enough to tell him the truth about how awful it looks. I think this applies to Ex-GINO too. People are either too scared of retaliation or they don’t care enough to be honest with her. She is a total PR disaster. After seeing the vitriol that Palin stirred up in just the last two months of the ’08 campaign – a wingnut fervor which still has not subsided – I am very uneasy with the vision of what she could do between now and Nov 2012. Not only does she share the twisted worldview of the secessionist wingnuts, she shares the twisted
political-religious views of radical Dominionist theocrats – and they hold her in esteem, and see her as a key player in achieving their goal of taking over government.

Palin has no bite she is all bark now. Without an elected position to spew her nonsense she will fade and fade fast. There will be attraction to her getting indicted but the headlines will be short & quick after the first 48 hours.

Palin will never get elected to anything ever again. Palin has done shown she is unable, unstable and unethical to be supported by those with the resources to buy a candidate. She is done put a fork in her.

For us, the interest stays just now because her lunacy has become a daily routine and there is a promise she will get what is coming to her & no one wants to miss being in the front row.

I think for about everyone else the climax on Friday was the beginning of the end of her public affair. Love the way she is being kicked out of the nations bedroom like a cheap whre.

In picking on a lone blogger, as opposed to a MSS or corporate news or blog source, I am sure Sarah The Scarer thinks she can really cause pain and really intimidate all bloggers.

Apparently, she didn’t notice when conservative bloggers stood up for a certain Alaskan Progressive blogger who was attacked and outed by an bitchy Politician. And how that incident went national in the blogsphere, and, also too increased the audience which that “punished” blogger spoke to.

If she goes after Shannyn in court, and that threat has already gone national, she will have the whole bloggsphere, national and international picking holes in her and retelling all her disasters, and her lies and her “Gates.”

Maybe she thinks it will be just an Alaska thing, or that she can get a favorable judge or jury in Alaska. But I doubt either is really true.

In addition, if it gets to court she will have to prove not only damage, but will have to prove the rumor is a lie.
In other words she’ll have to prove they paid for all the construction and construction materials.

And she will probably have to explain the building ordinance she supported, that allowed her, initially, to hide the building plan.

Sarah Palin’s Media Stalker Greta Van Susteren is Stunned that Palin Quit

Greta Van Susteren, FOX News’ serial stalker of Sarah Palin, was in shock over the announcement that Palin quit her job. When asked about what this means, she said…

Greta:…It’s hard to tell if she’s giving up or gearing up and that I don’t know…

Greta whined about all the ethics complaints that were filed against Sarah Palin and said that she could get disheartened. Really? She QUIT her job and quit on the people of Alaska. She’s proved that she’s unfit for duty. And it’s not only me saying it.

Some Republican strategists expressed skepticism about Palin’s decision. “I’m not smart enough to see the strategy in this,” said John Weaver, a senior party strategist. “Good point guards don’t quit and walk off the court.”

Her transparent need for instant media gratification and adoration (any attention = good thing), is well known among the upper levels of the GOP power chain. Add Ensign and Sanford, also possible 2012 contenders, axed out recently and you have major GOP house cleaning going on.
Palin was/is a nice shiny toy to provide needed distraction and revulsion among non-GOP folks. It worked. While we are paying attention to her, wtf else is going on behind the scenes. She was the perfect foil to make sure Mccain lost and the Bush mess getting dumped in a Democrat’s lap.

From what I know of Mccain, some inside stuff as well as what is outside knowledge, he is just as unstable and flighty as Palin. Perhaps that is one reason he seemed okay with the upper echelon’s choice of her as his running mate. Picking some one worse than him was more appealing to his monstrous ego.
While McCain may have thought he could win, the elites knew for certain he was toast. He turned into hot buttered toast once Palin came on board as his running mate.

Buttercup, Buttercup, isn’t there a song about Buttercup?

I listened closely to every word she said Friday morning (actually afternoon for me) and at first I thought it was just the pot getting to me, sometimes a few hits make even the most sensible statements sound incoherent, so I put the joint out and waited awhile, but the whole thing made even less sense to me when I was straight. She rambled senselessly about sports, talked about herself in the third person and hinted that she was being pursued by the forces of darkness. It’s scary to think that the mind inside that head was running for the number two spot in the Nation.

I have my own speculations about the reasons behind her decision and I don’t think we’ve heard the last from her yet, nor do I think we’ve heard the last on her, shall we say, less than appropriate actions both as Governor and as Mayor of Wasilla. But in the middle of her senseless rant one great truth came shining through, she said her leaving was what was best for Alaska. Can we all get an Amen on that one?

Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you.

Can’t recall where, but another passage commands christians not to bring a brother to court. And I know the one “Judge not, that ye be not judged”, which I too have to take personally, wondering if I am being judgmental here. But, after some reflection, I know that constituents (the little guy) who are depending on a supposed representative of Christ to tell the truth, not over exagerrate, not deceive, etc., DESERVE at the very least to expect that servant’s heart shining example. It’s a sad day when a “servant” wants to throw her weight around by threats of lawsuits, not a good example.

Got to say that the person who does show, so far, true integrity, and moderation, temperance is President Obama.

    yellerdoggNo Gravatar says:

I think that soon to be ex-Governor Spears, er….. Palin, is about to treat us to two eruptions:

    1. Considering GINO’s recent use of the phrases “Higher Authority” and “Year of Jubilee”, this article in the July 01 issue of Christianity Today appears to be prescient.

“A new federation of two dozen conservative Christian group announced plans today to work together to strategize around moral values they feel are under attack across the
    country.

“We are not wed to a particular partisan candidate or party,” said Mathew Staver, founder of Liberty Counsel and an organizer of the Freedom Federation. “We are wed to core shared values.”

Those values include opposition to abortion, same-sex marriage and pornography and support for religious freedom, limited government and the right to own firearms.”

As a potential spokesperson for this group, Palin would retain the national platform she craves while cloaked in 1st Amendment rights, protected by her base and be free to make unlimited amounts of money.

If indeed this is her plan and she times her announcement correctly, she can claim prejudice when/(if) …

    2. … the alleged “House-gate” affair breaks.

In the cryptic suggestion of an iceberg coming to sink the USS Palin. the phrase ‘house of cards” is used. This may be telling, especially considering the timing of Palin’s announcement in relation to the deadline for sentencing for Bill Allen.

    From a March 4, 2009 ADN article:

The two Veco Corp. officials at the center of the Alaska public corruption scandal once again on Wednesday had their sentences for bribery and conspiracy postponed.

Former Veco chief executive Bill Allen and a Veco vice president, Rick Smith, won’t have to worry about prison again until at least June 30, when federal prosecutors will present another status report on their cooperation in the long-running FBI investigation.

U.S. District Judge John Sedwick accepted the most recent status report, filed under seal Tuesday by prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s office in Anchorage. He agreed to allow the filing in secret “because it relates to on-going investigations,” he wrote in an order.

Sedwick’s order was the fifth time he has delayed sentencing and asked for status reports since the two men pleaded guilty in May 2007 to corrupting Alaska legislators. Their trial testimony has since led to guilty verdicts against two legislators and former U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens.

Federal guidelines entitle Allen and Smith to shorter sentences if they continue to cooperate until they are no longer needed. The latest delay is the strongest indication yet that the government is still pursuing its investigation despite setbacks following the Stevens conviction, including an FBI agent who claimed another agent and prosecutors violated Justice Department policy and may have broken the law.

Stay tuned and be sure to add plenty of butter to the popcorn.

Where do THEY get their info from… and where is the fact-checking..?
    (from Wapo )

“Another reason Palin decided to leave office is her income potential, advisers said. As governor, she earns $125,000, and Todd Palin, an oil production operator and commercial fisherman, took home about $86,000 (not counting $5,600 for winning the Iron Dog snowmobile race), according to her latest financial disclosure.”

Now I don’t remember what Todd’s purse winning were this past year when he ‘ participated in ‘ The Iron Dog. Didn’t he come in ‘ 6th Place ‘..?

Did she make a habit of forcing out those whose views were different from hers? Kinda makes you wonder about her denying that the Wasilla librarian was fired over refusing to get rid of books she deemed inappropriate.

A bunch of sites following linked to her quitter speech and her own fish photograph quote. Much Sarado About Nothin’. That story on MSNBC re: The email requests shows that Svobodny is willing to deliberately mislead just like Palin.

    He claims:

“For example, in the last eight months the Department of Law has devoted over 4,000 hours to providing legal review and advice on public records requests at a cost to the state of over $450,000. To put that in context, over those eight months the Department has had the full time equivalent of four people working on public records requests to the exclusion of their normal duties. This effort is unprecedented, unexpected and unbudgeted. The Department of Law, already operating with diminished staff due to the hiring freeze compelled by the recent downturn in state revenues and only recently rescinded, could not have done more.”

Now correct me if I am wrong but didn’t we find out that the “hiring freeze” was basically a joke and that 99% of those “exception requests” were approved during that so-called “freeze”??

Was the Dept. of Law the one place that an exception request was not granted in a deliberate attempt to block the access to those email requests?

However, fee waivers are limited to situations in which a requester can show that disclosure of the requested information is in the public interest because it is likely to contribute significantly to public understanding of the operations and activities of the government and is not primarily in the commercial interest of the requester.”

Is Van Flein trying to intimidate and shut down speculation about the real reasons Palin resigned by drawing the attention away from the real issue with his laboriously long, detailed explanation of the sports center and the Wasilla house? It would make wily sense to bluster and blow about one issue to take away the spotlight from a possible real issue.

    I value Geoffrey Dunne’s insight/opinion:

By being a lame duck, Palin would have exposed herself to more negative coverage, more public failure. By stepping down she allows herself to regroup, get out from under the microscope and re-emerge as a national figure without the constant strain of serving as governor.

Some news sources are claiming that Palin is stepping away from politics permanently; perhaps. But I didn’t hear that today. What I heard were typical Palin code words that she has her ambitions set for higher office, for a national stage. Her shots at Obama’s stimulus package were just one of many signals aimed directly at Washington.

So do not think for a moment that this is the last we will be hearing from Sarah Palin. The Federal Election Commission will soon be reporting how much money Palin’s SarahPAC has raised over the past four months. You can bet that Palin has a lot of gas left in her tank. She is the gift that John McCain gave us that will not go away.

    Hello mudpups!

Unfortunately I had to go to work right after AKM announced the “press conference” on Friday. Had to listen to all of the “it breaks my heart” talk of the news at work (argh). After answering all of the phone messages and e-mails when I got home, I was up half the night trying to get caught up on all of the comments and blogs. Then I had to work yesterday and just caught Shannyn’s show on my way home. Too exhausted to post anything after that.

So. I have had a little time to digest it all (urp-excuse me).

dss55: You beat me to “the Iquitarod” which had me ROFL.

jhop: welcome to mudflats. It is awesome to have legal opinions posted.

Since I have dial-up I cannot listen to SP’s “speech” (thank god). I did try to read the transcript (that is always so much more enlightening than listening to her).

It seemed to me that there was an awful lot of code in there for a POTUS run. Or…maybe she just can’t get off her talking points. It reminds me of something said way back in the Carter years about the crazy rich guy from TX who ran as an independent (can’t remember his name-you know who I am talking about). “sounds like an old record. being played on a phonograph. on the back of a pick-up, bouncing down a dirt road, by a needle made from a peanut” (I’am paraphrasing-it has been a long time).

I don’t really know what to think of any of it. Can,t quite figure out the why of any of it. Why can’t she just come out and say whatever the reason is so we can get back to taking care of business? I know, because it is much more fun to have everybody speculating and talking about Sarah. “Look at me, I quit in my shiny red shoes”.

I am happy that we will not have to put up with a do-nothing, vindictive, power-crazed governor anymore (maybe-I don’t know diddly about Parnell). I have always been of the belief that whomever is in that job should DO THE JOB.

At this point there is a lot of the job that needs to get done before winter. As I said before, apparently we cannot depend on our politicians to get stuff done. Please read Anna Strongheart’s posts. Eagle needs gravel pads and they need them NOW. Summer is half over for them and they will need warm, dried in shelter soon. What can we do–evil, powerful people that we are–to get the fire lit under DOT’s butt?

SP going to the west villages? OMG. Can’t wait to see commercial fishing? WTF? Have those people been paid for the work they have done yet? How are they going to survive the winter without enough food? Price of fuel isn’t exactly cheap right now.

I think that we need to focus on how some of these problems are going to get resolved.

And Jerry Prevo is still spouting his hateful crap and riling up his followers for next Tuesday…

Shannyn is brilliant in not backing down to SP’s empty threats. SP still doesn’t get how the internet works (in spite of the smackdown the last time).

And wonkette makes me laugh every day.

Cheers. I’m in Alaska but I don’t quite feel free of the nightmare yet.

Say NO – I don’t think that a condition of any private lawsuit could be that she resigned. Unless, of course, Palin did it on her own and entered into a confidential settlement once she knew the suit had legs or they had damning evidence. But I think Palin would fight something like that. You can stipulate or settle to, well, anything, but I think resigning as governor would be pushing it.

I am more concerned about an agreement with the Ethics Board or another administrative agency. Their proceedings are shrouded in secrecy; a complainant does not even have the right to know what the outcome of their own complaint was or how the outcome came to be. Maybe over the emails or using her trust. Or even something to do with house-gate. Something complicated that could lead to much bigger problems for Palin.

Her attack yesterday seemed preemptive, like she was trying to force an issue into the closet when people were bringing it to light. She went on this crazy offensive before any action called for it. It just sets off alarms for me. She also seems so f-ing confident, which is nagging me; like she knows something we don’t. Like maybe she has some under the table agreement and knows the truth is NOT coming to light (although, i would hope it would get out eventually). But I am talking about right now, in the near future. We are all waiting for the other shoe to drop. Maybe she knows nothing is looming because she made sure it wasn’t, by resigning. And yesterday’s chatter pissed the hell out of her. I don’t know. But it is really really weird to me.

I think that the quote that everyone is referring to is the one that says

” Update: This just in my inbox, from a source connected sometimes to CNN:

“Here’s a quote I got from law enforcement here in Alaska yesterday afternoon regarding Palin “a criminal indictment is pending authorization.” ”

That doesn’t state FBI or even federal, although others have said they have heard federal, that is still rumor as far as I can tell. The only direct thing says criminal indictment and doesn’t say by what agency. I would have to guess that this was in Dennis Zaki’s inbox as the only Alaskan I’ve heard of with ties to CNN sometimes (that is just a guess). His web page still says the same thing. So the FBI statement only means, that it isn’t their investigation.

I don’t know that a resignation can stop a criminal investigation with an already pending indictment, but maybe she hopes it can. One can assume that her lawyer at least, would be aware of what is going on, but lawyers are paid to protect their clients, so he would be the last to give anything away.

I wouldn’t think that Palin would give away anything until after the fact to any other connections. Why rock the boat, when it might still all go away.

jhop, question for ya……..whose job would redacting info in the emails fall to? someone in the administration and her lawyer and the personnel board? what kind of oversight protection does the public “usually” have?

In my experience, normal things like social security numbers, personal data is redacted automatically. but normally both sides will argue for what they want withheld or included and why it should be that way (unless it is a national security concern or something important to state/government secrets). the FOIA agency would be in charge of this, normally. but you can then bring their response into court. i can’t imagine they would be able to redact very much in this case.

  280. 282
    JHopNo Gravatar says:

the public would have to have a reason to request an explanation of the redaction, i.e. why they think the redacted section should not be redacted. which is hard, considering you don’t know what is blacked out!

FOIA agencies are by far the biggest money losers in the nation. they do not have the manpower anywhere to keep up with the requests. i wish they would prioritize them (obviously this is a bigger request than if, for example, i was asking for my dad’s old vietnam war records or whatever), but they don’t.

Probably a nicer place for her to be right now. People are busy; no one has time to chase her around and fewer people that read blogs and internet news. Anyone who dislikes her politics will politely avoid her and give her lots of room; everyone else will suck up like crazy. She’ll get a hero’s welcome and showered with adoration, attention and well-wishing everywhere she goes.
Good move, Sarah. A little ego-stroking would be a nice change right now.

Callan might be over there too; you might have a little competition for attention. You remember Callan, don’tcha?
The U.S. National Team athlete that you blew off at the Slush Cup event a few months ago? The Yupik Eskimo teenager from Dillingham on the short-track to the 2010 Vancouver Olympics? The Yupik Eskimo that finished the season as the top-ranked Junior athlete _in the world_. The 2008 National Champion, you remember.
The Yupik Eskimo from western Alaska that will be the first Eskimo to compete in the Olympics, EVER. The athlete that pays for training and competition expenses by working the back deck on Grandpa’s fishing boat in Bristol Bay. [Boy, there's a heart-warming story for ESPN...]
The X-Games athlete sponsored by Ocean Beauty Seafoods.
Cute, funny, articulate, well-spoken; the perfect representative of Alaska salmon at the New York event last month that Todd filled in for.
    http://tiny.cc/8JbFY
    http://tiny.cc/DjnPg

No, don’t remember? Oh yeah, that’s right. Bob and Mark from KWHL forgot to announce her. The media was too busy with the First Family and Arctic Cat promotion, to mention an Eskimo World Cup athlete at a ski event.

It was an opportunity to awknowledge and commend her dedication and hard work, particularly as it relates to inspiration and motivation to bush Alaska teenagers and pursuing opportunity. You know, leaving the village, being successful, returning home…all those things you said kids in the village need to do?

I just have to add – the Alaska teenager that REALLY graduated from high school, in three years with a 3.2 GPA while traveling and competing, and is REALLY abstinent and REALLY drug and alcohol-free for all the right reasons.
A _real_ role model of competency and the relevance of good choices.

While Sarah and Bristol garnered national media attention for the Wasilla rager teen crowd, it might be a different story on the ground in Dillingham, hmmm?
How about the runner from Naknek, living out of his car in Washington state so that he can compete nationally?
How about some media spotlight on real successes coming out of villages?

The Wasilla Frontiersman newspaper has an article where the town’s residents (all who get quoted) essentially ask “Why can’t you mean people leave Sarah alone?” I wrote a response, but it was too long for acceptance.
Therefore, also, too, I am posting it here (since I took the time to write it).
Here is WHY we cannot just “leave her alone:”
Her pettiness, vindictiveness, lack of judgement, and lack of ethics have wreaked havoc on the citizens of Alaska. Examples include ruining or trying to ruin the lives of: Beverly Wooley, Public Health Division Director, Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan, Wasilla Museum Director, John Cooper, incumbent Mayor Stein, regulator on state oil and gas commission, Rudy Ruedrich and these are just a few of too many to name off of the top of my head.
Anyone who disagrees with her and off with their heads (figuratively).
She does not have the knowledge or intellectual curiosity to understand what the First Amendment means, what a VP does, and even describes the office of the Governor as a “title” rather than a job.
How many people can she be allowed to humiliate, lose their jobs and scar their reputations before we are allowed to NOT just “leave her alone.”
I will leave her alone when she no longer has the power to destroy more lives, and possibly destroy America.

The Bristol Bay fishery has been experiencing many closures for “escapement” – allowing spawning stock to “escape” and make it to their spawning grounds. The closures vary depending on the particular river involved and the cumulative escapement counts. The fisheries that are in serious trouble are those in western Alaska – the Kuskoskwim(sp?) and Yukon rivers, and the specie in most trouble is the King salmon. In the area where Todd fishes – Dillingham – the days they’ve been allowed to fish have looked pretty productive in the counts I’ve seen (and which I now can’t find!).

Good luck in finding anyone willing to get that close to Toomey. ;)

I’d believe the Wasilla campaign manager whose interview is on a previous thread. A leopard doesn’t change its spots.

The former Mayoral campaign manager says that Sarah Palin would never run if she was cornered by the authorities (and we already know she loves her some court action) and that Palin’s lust for power is undiminished (i.e. POTUS).

If this is to be believed, it could be a very fat slush fund about to be taken away, or a complete lack of love for the “title” of Governor (we already know she’s never actually done the job of Governor and that she is innately lazy) and the leaving of Alaska behind to pursue big ambitions.

On the subject of ambitions: she has failed every time she has gained any power:
Mayor of Wasilla – recall petition
Chair, Oil & Gas – quit
    Governor – quit

I’d never, ever put any store in what Toomey says.
