Open Thread – Gone Fishin’!

No, this is not about who you think this is about. It’s me! Hey, if she can just up and walk off to go fishing, then can’t I? Unlike her, however, I’m not throwing in the towel. There will be no abandonment! I’m just taking a weekend off to recharge the old batteries. It’s been a long time.
But here’s the interesting part. I will not have internet, or cell phone service….for two whole days. I mean, what could happen, right? (Don’t answer that)
It’s entirely possible I’ll have broken out in hives by the time I get back. It’ll be an experiment. I do, however, have my favorite coffee, a bottle of red wine, my camera, and a really nifty bar of lemon ginger dark chocolate packed. I can only go without so many vices at a time.
And I will miss all of you. I’m starting to feel like a collective. So it will be odd to be out in the quiet with only a couple voices around. But, fear not. I wouldn’t dream of clogging up the tubes while I’m gone, so I will be robo-posting while I’m away. That means I’ll have a collection of open threads that will magically pop up at pre-determined times while I’m away.
That said, I know you all will behave exceedingly well while the cat is away. You can give yourself a refresher course by reading the “comment guidelines” above.
DON’T FORGET! The forum is always there for your enjoyment and you can go over and search for a conversation, or start one yourself. If you haven’t explored over there, this would be a great time. Just click on the big image in the sidebar that says Mudflats Forum.
And, I’d also encourage you to try out the chat feature over there. If you want to get into a real time conversation with another Mudflatter or two or three, you can hop over to the forum and look for the tiny type in the upper right corner that says “chat”. Just click it, type in the box, and off you go! A great live conversation with no need to keep hitting “refresh!”
And why not check out I Heart Mudflats too? It also has a link over there =====> You can get to know your fellow Mudflatters, register your own blog, or even submit an entry yourself!
And you may have to be more patient than usual about the comments. For some reason the spam filter has been acting up a bit. The poor thing is probably overwhelmed. Hey, it didn’t expect Sarah Palin to up and quit either.
Our esteemed forum-master Snoskred, is half way around the world in Australia, and she’s in the middle of moving in to a new house. But she has still offered to pop in once in a while and liberate some comments if she has time. One thing NOT to do is to keep trying to post over and over. It only makes the spam filter irritated with you and more likely to make you spam in the future…and we don’t want that.
I’ll be heading to an undisclosed location tomorrow afternoon, but may get a post or two in before I go. Buf the dog and housesitters are all set, and the car is packed. If all goes well, I’ll have some nice pictures to share when I return. In the meantime, have fun, and I’ll look forward to reading about everything that happened when I get back!

Enjoy your trip and come back fully refreshed!
Have a fab holiday ADM, you deserve it.
More power to you, I don’t think I could go cold turkey on Buttercup Quittypants at the moment, it’s too much fun waiting to see what falls out of the sky. I imagine God throwing shoes a la Bush.
I posted this on the last open thread….
Hi there everyone !
Just a reminder about the Purple Passion Swap. If any of you signed up for this great swap on the forum, don’t forget to check your Personal Messages (PMs) to find out the details of your swap buddy. I realise that not all of you visit the forum on a regular basis (but why not give it a try !), so just wanted to remind you that that is where you’ll find out the all important details. If you need any help at all on the forum – just “holler”
Thanks
Siren
Have a great adventure AKM! Catch lots of fish and don’t pull a Palin and not wear a lifejacket! Also too, don’t give one second of your weekend thoughts to Sarah Who?
We will sorely miss you but are happy you are giving yourself a very well deserved break! I hope Shannyn is taking one as well..
Reds are running on the Kenai. C’mon down. Have a good break.
This is for any Juneau mudpups: What is the story with the Kensington Mine? I know that there are always 2 sides to every story but I am disturbed by the dumping of toxic tailings into a freshwater lake as “fill”. Lisa Murkowski was on the news tonight talking about how great it was that the Supreme Court gave the go-ahead because it would create 370 jobs. What say you Southest folks on this?
Yes – another victim falls prey to Palinresignationism. I am glad you are following the treatment regimes and look forward to your return. I myself changed my avatar saying on the forum from “Angry Writer Bunny on the Loose” to “No longer angry, but still writing” or something to that affect. As things are going, we are going to have to save ourselves and not get pulled off the cliff into the melodrama. Stay healthy everybody!
Have some good time off, enjoy yourself.
Can anyone fill me in on the progress of JHop’s letter? I don’t have time to read everything on the last open thread (too tired).
Happy vacation AKM!! You and my son and family will both be out of town at the same time. They leave Fairbanks today and I’ll have them for a whole week!
Glad you are taking coffee, wine and chocolate – like you said, you can only do without a certain amount of vices at one time! Don’t forget a good book!
Peace and quiet to you.
YBG: If you come on tonight, please, please, please update us on Eagle. Did Eagle ever get the gravel they are waiting for? I looked at the new website but was totally confused by the spreadsheets on what is needed vs what you have in terms of tools. Hubby and I will come up when we can be best utilized. Talked to Andy the other day. Update us please-summer is half over. Concerned for all of you.
Safe journey, AKM. See you when you return.
lovemydogs @ 10,
YBG posted a little more at anoymousbloggers earlier this evening in the Eagle Gravel thread. You should check there for some info, they’re making progress:

Can anyone fill me in on the progress of JHop’s letter? I don’t have time to read everything on the last open thread (too tired).
__________________________________
lovemydogs…. JHop has the completed letter posted on a separate thread in the Form so that you can view it. I have not heard whether ot not it was sent… or if there has been any kind of reply though.
I don’t have the link to get to it ,but to find that thread or folder I would just use the ‘ search ‘ function ( in The Forum ) at the top just like you would do with a Google search. Search by JHop or the name of the lady who wrote the article.( can’t remember the name right now ) Her name was part of the thread title.
lovemydogs, I know how you feel. My eyes are droopy and I haven’t begun to catch up, so will have to give up soon. I think JHop’s letter got sent this afternoon. I have not heard anything since then.
Have fun, AKM! See ya next week!
Kath the Scrappy@ 12
Thanks.
I still think I will call Andy tomorrow and find out the latest. We mudpups might be able to be effective at harrassing the DOT if it isn’t getting done.
And that might just help us to detox from SP for a bit.
Karma and all that.
“What could go wrong?”
There really isn’t much that Miss Fishpants could do now to spoil your weekend, AKM.
I hope you’re going to that gorgeous place you went last winter, or somewhere equally nice.
Have a very refreshing time, AKM. You already live in a little backyard vacation paradise, so any trip away must be pretty fabulous. So bring back lots of pictures. Don’t even think about us!
hey everyone. read the comment i posted a little bit ago under the letter and it will explain where everything stands now. the final version of the letter is up.
i would like to keep the link out of the general thread so evil palin lurkers can’t access it. but hell, if the ADN doesnt respond by Monday, i will make sure it gets a lot more publicity than it is getting right now.
AKM-Hope you have a great time and don’t suffer internet withdrawal! I’ve become so addicted it drives me crazy, almost as bad as quitting cigs when I don’t get to check all my favorite sites-#1 Mudflats on at least a twice daily basis, and now lately it’s been hard to leave, there is so much to read from all of your fans.
have a great trip AKM! thank you for providing me with this wonderful, albeit professionally unproductive, distraction. you are the best.
JHop: where??? On the Forum?
lovemydogs – yes. it is under some secret special hidden section (i have no idea what im talking about).

we were talking about the illegal alaska fund trust earlier, what to do to get it dissolved as quickly as possible…
this is the statute it falls under. i am going to read it and see what the deal is:

JHop: Ahhhh–in the secret, undisclosed files…with the 18 minutes of Nixon’s tapes. I shall look there. Hope I don’t run into Cheney on the way.
JHop@25: YOU are the pit bull JHop. Sic ‘em.
if anyone has the chance and doesn’t mind, please recommend my comment under Grimes’s op-ed. i want to make sure that she sees it. ideally, i just want my letter to be given to her; hopefully it will make her pee in her republican deputy treasurer pants. but i just want to put her on notice.
this is the link: http://community.adn.com/adn/node/142241
thank you so so so much.
Enjoy your break AKM. You deserve it!
JHop: Just recommended your comment. Can’t find the final draft of the letter. I got into the secret and undisclosed location but just found all of the previous comments that were in the original location. ARGH! Sometimes the forum is just too complicated for my fuzzy brain.
I am sooooo tired. Must work tomorrow with dementia patients. They will probably check me in. Oh well. Can’t wait to hear the results.
Yawn. Goodnight all.
have a restful weekend AKM
JHop@28: Done–I’ve recommended your ADN comment. You’re up to 7. Thanks for undertaking this, by the way, and excellent letter!
Recommended the comment by lawpup. I presume that is yours JHop?
yes. thanks so much guys. lawpup was a shoutout to the mudpuppies, of course.
im not sure why people are having trouble accessing the final version of the letter. it seems to work, but i dont know. i am forum-challenged. but i can still see the final version. if you PM me, I will just give you the link. in fact, i think it is already linked in a comment on this thread.
The final version of the letter is in the first post of the thread – JHop edited it. I will post it in the end of the thread as well to make it easier for people to find
#28 @ JHOP — comment done
I hit the recommend for you JHop – this was such a despicable article! I couldn’t believe ADN published it.
However they did have a great editorial against Palin today which I’d begun to think no one there would be brave enough to do… and now when I went to find it – it’s disappeared. But I went to my history and found it that way so here’s the link – http://www.adn.com/opinion/comment/carey/story/858429.html?commentSort=TimeStampAscending&pageNum=6&&&&&mi_pluck_action=page_nav
have a great and well-deserved break….we’ll try to keep things (Palin in particular) under control…
Snoskred Says: “The final version of the letter is in the first post of the thread – JHop edited it. I will post it in the end of the thread as well to make it easier for people to find”
thank you so much for doing that. i understand now why people were getting confused. i edited the first post because i didn’t want the rough draft unnecessarily online (in case anyone used it for anything, quoted from it, whatever). so i intended to just leave one full and final version on the forum thread. but i totally understand the confusion. sorry guys.
As my daughter always says, “have BIG fun,” breathe in all that wonderfully fresh air, turn your face to the sun, and relax. We’ll all be waiting here when you return. Can’t wait to see the pictures.
AKM, I hope you have a WONDERFUL WEEKEND and I am really looking forward to the beautiful pictures we all love to see!
I’m just going to mention something that is annoying me on a few conservative sites. I might get a bit technical here, I apologise in advance.
I have the word “mudflats” set as a google alert so I can keep track of what is being said about the flats.
Today I saw an article written on a blog I will not link to (no, not the usual suspects, some clueless mommy blogger) talking about the traffic to the mudflats after Palin’s resignation. This article mentioned Alexa, which is an extremely inaccurate way of measuring the traffic to any website.
I am also aware that the usual suspects did a post a while back talking about The Mudflats on Alexa and comparing it to their stats on Alexa. Let me just explain something about Alexa.
If you are using Internet Explorer, you are likely to be sending data to Alexa. The website states – “Alexa’s traffic rankings are based on the usage patterns of Alexa Toolbar users and data collected from other, diverse sources over a rolling 3 month period.”
But I didn’t install the Alexa Toolbar, I hear Internet Explorer (IE) users say. You don’t need to – it is automatically installed as a part of IE. Any time you visit a website, you are unknowingly giving information about that to Alexa. I am not sure if there is a way to turn it off – I would not touch internet explorer with a 10 foot pole. Whereas on Firefox, you have to *choose* to install the Alexa toolbar and you can turn it on and off as you choose.
So let me state this publicly, to clear this up once and for all.
Internet Explorer does not even appear in the top 10 list of user agents here on The Mudflats. Approximately 3% of mudflats users use IE.
I partly attribute this to the fact that I have been extremely vocal about telling people who were using IE to switch to Firefox – and partly to the fact that many mudpuppies were computer literate enough to be using Firefox long before I mentioned it.
So any “blogger” doing posts about traffic to The Mudflats via Alexa.. you are talking about a tiny percentage of the people visiting this site. Congratulations for being completely clueless about the internet, also too.
The only real way to get 100% accurate stats for a website is from the actual server itself – and those sites on blogger or wordpress.com do not have access to the actual server stats. They can install a stats tracker of some kind, but if the user stops the page load before the tracker loads, you will not have information for that visit. Tracker stats are not 100% accurate – and that includes Google Analytics.
If you are using Internet Explorer, quit. Get Firefox. Trust me when I say you will be a lot safer on the internet and you won’t be providing your surfing data to anyone without *knowing* it.
Yes, that is right – those pr0n sites you visited? Alexa knows.
Ok, I got that off my chest. Back to the fun.
snoskred – thank you for that post. i had no idea about any of that – except the part about not touching IE with a 10 foot pole. it is awful in comparison to firefox. we converted samper into our firefox cult a few days ago.
nevertheless, very interesting….
Snoskred – will talk to UKMan about changing, I am such a technophobe. It has taken me 2 years to figure out IE.
JHop – Thank you so much for your work, it is really appreciated by us all. Have recommended lawpup and you are now 2nd!.
UK Lady, I am a complete technophobe but I downloaded Firefox and installed it a couple of months ago. It took me a day or two to get used to it, but I would never go back to IE now.
Snoskred @ 42
My IP (both) opens up with IE automatically. I won’t touch it (IE is a virus magnet) and I’ve used Firefox for years. I immediately close IE, then open Firefox before checking out anything on the ‘net. Granted, I frequent Mudflats. But, if I’m not doing anything in IE, would my history reflect in any way to add to the numbers?
AKM–have a marvelous time slaying those salmon! You deserve it:)
Have a wonderful time, AKM!
** FINALLY! ** A chance over the weekend to catch up on yesterday and today’s posts, as I’ve been occupied otherwise and haven’t had time!
It’s like going through withdrawal… I had so much to do yesterday, and again today, that I find myself missing you all!
UPDATE: On Tuesday, our Gov Light invited my ex (Editor of an outdoors publication – it was a PR thing) to go fishin’. That got me to thinking… if he has contacts at the Gov’s office, he might be able to get me a ticket to the Town Hall meeting with the President on Tuesday.
He doesn’t seem to think his contacts at the Gov’s office are the “right kind”, but we’ll see if he likes me JUST enough to try.
I’ll catch up with you all either late tonite or over the weekend.

Oh… and remember my secret from the forum the other night?
HE’S ALREADY THERE with a pup’s relative!!!!!! I can’t say how deflated I am… He’s CHEATING on me!
@ Snoskred
Whew & Thanks! Don’t need to be giving any Alexa bonus points to some creepy sites.
AKM, I hope you will have a fantastic stressfree vacation!!! After this week, you and your family deserve the timeout! I have no doubt that Brian & Dear Buf will entertain each other while you’re gone.
AKM – Have a fantabulous weekend ! Renew, refresh, revitalize!
But just gotta tell ya – Regina over at Palingates decided to get away last week and within hours of her departure, Palin up n’ quit. I wonder what your getaway might bring ! (could it get any more interesting ? )
Of COURSE it can!
lemon ginger dark chocolate…. ahhhhhh.
Tech note: The Forum chat has a nifty translate option (at the bottom to the right of the smilies option). With translate you see the conversation in the original language (usually English) AND each line is also translated to the language of your choice. You guys are just as funny and interesting in Japanese!
Enjoy your well deserved break.
Have a great time. Can’t wait to see the photos and hear about your trip. Thanks for all you do. And thanks, Snoskred, you’re the best. I don’t think I could have held onto my sanity through this sarah thing without y’all.

Taj Mahal singing the Fishin’ Blues. One of my all time favorite songs.
In fact, the thought of you going fishing made me pull out one of my CD’s that I enjoy, but rarely play called “Goin’ Fishin’ (classic songs about fishing from 1951-1994). Contains songs all about fishing, of course…Fishin’ (Elvin Bishop), Crawdad Song (Red Foley), Cafish Boogie (Tennessee Ernie Ford), Six Pound Fish (Boxcar Willie), The Five Pound Bass (Robert Earl Keen), Gone
Fishin’ Again (Bobby Bare), Fishin’ Blues (Taj Mahal),Bourdreaux Was A
Nutcase (Austin Lounge Lizards), and a few others.
My dad was quite an avid fisherman. He went fishing almost everyday. Of
course, the fish most prized by fishermen around these parts is large-mouth
bass.
Have a great time!
AKM have wonderful well-deserved time off. Hope you have spectacular weather and great fishing. Looking forward to lots of pictures!
We promise not to throw any wild parties (unless a certain very naughty soon-to-be-former governor completely implodes).
We promise to keep the house neat and tidy up after ourselves.
We promise not to eat in the living room (except some popcorn when appropriate).
We promise to clean up after the dog.
We promise not to make you ashamed of us ever. You’ve set such a good example for us to emulate.
So, off you go. Enjoy your wine and chocolate (could there be anything better?). We ♥ You.
@JHop
Recommended! It’s interesting that out of 127 comments only a very few are pro-Grimes. And those are the usual vague, vapid parroting that we’ve come to expect. Yawn.
Is there a way to dissolve the AFT? Oh my, if so, that is going to set off some fireworks!
(chuckle chuckle)
I’m off to read your letter now.
So glad you’ve joined us.
Congratulations to JHop on winning this prestigious muddy prize!

I no longer bother to register for commenting on various sites, including ADN. Could somebody please go respond to JRBritta (something britta) way back on the first page of comments to the slimy ms. Grimes? The comment is so full of bad grammar, bad spelling, and ridiculousness (something about CD wanting a job in politics or something) that it made my head explode. I’m not going to register just to respond to somebody who is obviously very stupid, but perhaps one of you could have a bit of fun with the dimbulb.

Hi folks
I put this on the open thread late yesterday but it may have been missed by some. Celtic Diva has been getting some very nasty emails and could use some support from us. I amazes me how hateful some people can get.
Lemon, ginger, dark chocolate altogether? How?
Anyway, AKM, have a wonderful time, get great pictures, and come back thoroughly refreshed. You certainly deserve it.

….”Most newspapermen by definition have to be liberal; if they’re not, by my definition, they can hardly be good newspapermen” W. Cronkite
about 8 hours ago from TwitterBerry
Did Cronkite really say that ?? She muffed the Plato tweet.
http://thinkprogress.org/2009/07/09/palin-plato/
Danger to Sanity Alert- I just finished watching a Coulter-ish woman who is just as whacked as the real thing. Sitting next to a full bookshelf to make herself seem educated, this lady rants about the evils of Obama for a few minutes, then moves on to explain why Sarah is THEhe American Hope. She continually runs her fingers back through her hair, oo perhaps that is a crazy Republican hip thing to do. Coulter does the same thing.
I think she goes by “Atlas,” and her site is Atlas Shrugged. I have commented before about my confusion that so many far-right extremists seem to talk about Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals and also Atlas Shrugged. A few days ago after listening to Rush, I realized that the minions were merely “dittoing” the talking points. Today I realized that when they refer to Atlas Shrugged, they have most likely only been to the website or hand-picked quotes.
She SO blatantly lies about Sarah and minimizes anything that may make Sarah look bad. No coffee in mouth when listening, and no, if you yell at the computer, she can’t hear you. http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/
Please forgive the typos. No excuse other than hit the button too early.
Have a fabulous, restful weekend AKM! I can’t even imagine how wonderful the posts are going to be when you have recharged!
Gotta check out the SP style retrospective in HP!

Hard to believe that sexy co-ed sporting the “I may be broke, but I’m not flat busted” t-shirt is the same, “dignified” mother of 5 we know!
Wow, if the Coale statement to Margaret Carlson on Keith Olbermann is true………..then Sarah’s Servant’s Heart just took her faithful loyal subjects’ monies and used them to pay her legal bills, including her refund for children’s travel expenses. How long ago did she know this, that it had already been paid for? Her resignation speech didn’t acknowledge this at all.
It seemed to be insinuated then that she and Todd still owed the legal money…….as of the day of resignation speech.
Another thing: Why would John Coale reveal this to MSNBC reporter? Him being Sarah’s mentor and all, wouldn’t that be a betrayal to Sarah? If he indeed said this, it indicates that he is an honest person and won’t string her supporters along. Thank God for people with integrity, they are still out there, it gives me hope.

_______________
Remember, his wife Greta VS of Fox didn’t go to AK to do the Fox portion of the Sarah Exclusive 10 Minute Interview Marathon. No longer BFF? Or, is it because Greta’s contract hasn’t yet been renewed. Could Sarah work at that timespot? GretaWire, according to some brave mudpuppies who dared to enter, actually allowed a few anti-Palin comments.
Besides, John wants to bet on winners. First Hillary, then Sarah. Sarah may not be the winner he had thought.
I did, however, get the impression that only the legal portion was paid by them, not the actually mini-repayment.
It’s Friday. Does this mean we could have a press conference ??
Here is the full Cronkite quote:
I think most newspapermen by definition have to be liberal; if they’re not liberal, by definition of it, then they can hardly be good newspapermen. If they’re preordained dogmatists for a cause, then they can’t be very good journalists. ~ Walter Cronkite, Playboy, June 1973
IMO, leaving out the “preordained dogmatists” is taking the quote out of context. (Also, I’m a little saddened that Cronkite in 1973 was still comfortable excluding newspaperwomen from his discourse.)
that’s awesome. Have a terrific trip and enjoy your time away from the tubes. Taking a step back is a good thing once in a while.
Crazy ?? Here it is………….

Thank you. sarah had plenty of room on her tweet to get the WHOLE quote.
I’m assuming she was taking a shot at ADN. LAME.
I’m a little confused about the SarahPAC fund vs the Alaska Fund Trust. I thought the PAC must be used for political stuff and the AFT was created to pay her legal bills. But Coale, to my knowledge, was never involved in the AFT. He HAS definitely been linked to the PAC. So if Margaret Carlson did talk to him and he did say that the PAC was paying her legal stuff, does that make sense to anybody? Does it even sound legal?
AntiAnti
Austintx
Palin’s thought begins in this tweet that preceeded the Cronkite non-quote. Think about her ralationship with right wing radio …
Anxious for Fairbanks radio visit tomorrow re: 2nd Amendment! We have rockin’ surprise guest. Candidly, I love radio vs some newspapers bc..
Also, if the reasoning for using the PAC to pay back the kids’ travel expenses has to do with the PAC covering travel costs for Sarah’s political stuff, how can that be justified when she said all along that they went on those trips as part of the first family in her capacity as governor and they were found to not have enough state interest to be covered? Remember that she is claiming that the wording of the travel rules was just too vague and circular, so out of the goodness of her heart she just decided to pay them. That indicates that she is STILL claiming that they were along as the first family, which then indicates that they were NOT on a personal Sarah Runs For Something Else trip, even if that is actually what they WERE on.
This post is getting convoluted, but that is what happens when you actually try to diagram Sarah’s reasoning.
I had a thought this morning after reading my local paper. If the MSM is having a hard time getting the facts straight, why doesn’t each Mudflatter take the time to write a letter to the editor for their local paper? It may help to get the message out.
WakeUpAmerica posted this at I heart Mudflats. Everyone have a look, it is hysterical!!
http://iheart.themudflats.net/2009/07/09/416/#comments
Okay, I was reading something on Immoral Minority about Coale having been the one who set up the AFT. I guess I didn’t catch that before. Soooo…this guy who supposedly just helped sarah with a little advice and setting up the PAC has his fingers all over her stuff. And he has the gall to call himself just an informal advisor? (isn’t that what he said a while ago?)
Have fun AKM! We’ll miss you!
Hey Jhop……..could you look into the deal with the boxes and boxes of unopened mail and if they can legally declare the income as of the date they open a piece as compared to the date stamped on the envelope? Would checks still be valid?

“I think like Levi said, she was dreaming way back during the campaign days of how nice it would be to have keep of that money. I think they decided they could, when she bailed the job, she knew she was going to get out asap.
Back in December, a month after her election defeat as John McCain’s running mate, Johnston said that Palin “had talked about how nice it would be to take some of this money people have been offering us and just run with it, and saying forget everything else.”
oops, I accidentally included my last paragraph in the post with the Levi article.
Imagine how we felt last friday at Montana Creek-stuck without any info except”Palin Resigned!”. Oh, I was just pullin out my hair!
Just read somewhere where the info on Sarah’s children’s travel refund was not paid for by legal fund. It was the lawyer’s fees.
Beating a dead horse here, but I just thought of something…..remember when FGI (Former Gov. Icon) introduced the Alaska Fund Trust – she said that the Dept. of Law “cleared” it before hand? Well, how many hours were spent on that my dear Former Gov. Icon????? How much did that cost the State?
AKM – Only ONE bar of chocolate for the WHOLE weekend?????????????

I spend time at greta’s place & she has always allowed “badmouthing” of sister sarah, I average 20-30 on every palin thread. The wack-a-doodles go nuts and instantly go into attack mode hurling playground type insults at the sarah bashers. Greta’s mo is to put kind of nice threads about O or Michelle up so the wackos can fill up the thread with racial hate comments & putting up buttercup threads so GA peach & the likes of me can say snarky things to incite the unwashed masses that congregate over there. I’ve noticed she puts a lot more sarah threads up lately & there appears to be many more sarah bashers commenting. Perhaps it is by design because her & hubby john have broken up with toad & sarah…
AKPet Mom posted this on Gryphens and its very good!

“They have taken the position that a lawyer has to look at every single record before its release. If a lawyer has to look at it and review it, and maybe write a legal opinion on it, well, that’s going to be expensive,” says Mr. Erickson. Court fights also add to the costs, he says.
Citizens and journalists who sought public records have been socked with huge bills. At one point, the Palin administration presented the Associated Press with a bill of $45 million for copies of official state e-mails sent to Palin’s husband, to the McCain campaign, and to federal agencies.
How funny would it be if Palin took Greta’s show?
And if offered, she would take it in a heartbeat.
bye Greta, thanks for everything!

austinTX – I pulled up the definition of “liberal” from the Compact Oxford English Dictionary and posted that somewhere here last night. The right wingnuts keep saying “liberal” like it’s a bad thing. Too bad they aren’t any more interested in finding out what that word really means than Sarah is in getting her quotes right.

” Want to keep up with Sarah Palin but just don’t have the time? Have we got a website for you. C4P is like a Palin news clearinghouse. It’s been around since January, but we just came across it recently during the big news from Palin about her plans to resign as governor. C4P, as the site is called, isn’t a draft Palin site, though most of the info relates to her politics. And it’s not all adoration—it runs much of the national press on Palin that it comes across. ”
ACK!!!! Please get over there to set the record straight. I just added my thoughts but there needs to be more.
they are also lumping in equipment costs into the ethics charge totals, don’t ya think that’s stretching things? was this equipment going to be bought anyway? and they’re lumping in to bump up the cost? what is this equipment, new computers? blackberries? xerox machines?

Wow, if the Coale statement to Margaret Carlson on Keith Olbermann is true………..then Sarah’s Servant’s Heart just took her faithful loyal subjects’ monies and used them to pay her legal bills, including her refund for children’s travel expenses. How long ago did she know this, that it had already been paid for? Her resignation speech didn’t acknowledge this at all.
It seemed to be insinuated then that she and Todd still owed the legal money…….as of the day of resignation speech.
Rebekkah, there are a couple of errors here.
First, Sarah used the money her ‘loyal subjects’ intentionally contributed for legal expenses, and used it to pay for….legal expenses. No problem there. This was NOT money from SarahPac. Whether she should be ABLE to have a legal expense fund is a different issues, and currently the subject of an unresolved ethics complaint.
Second, neither the Alaska Fund Trust nor SarahPac has been alleged by anyone to have paid the actual travel expenses back to the state. Margaret Carlson did not say that in her interview.
I think it is very important that we be precise. There are a lot of valid issues, but I have seen this same error spreading on a couple of blogs, for the simple reason that one person mis-hears the interview, comments, and the next person takes the blog comment for fact. We should all try to be relentless in digging to verify facts where we can, and presenting our opinions and suppositions clearly as opinions.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
SarahPac was set up by John Coale aka Greta’s husband. It was set up for her to be able to contribute campaign funds and travel where she wants. The problem with SARAHPAC, is she has to account funds in and out.
The “Slush” fund was set up by Kristin Cole. It is supposed to be for “Legal” bills, but if you read the fine print it can be used for anything at all with out any accountability what so ever! It would make sense that she would use SarahPac to pay the travel expense back to the state, as that would serve as documentation.
You stated that it makes sense for SarahPac to have paid the travel expenses for the kids. Actually, I think it would be inappropriate. SarahPac is for political expenses. The kids travel was personal travel, and I believe was completely unrelated to the campaign or any national political activities.
So, on the one hand I have not seen anyone claim that SarahPac paid for those travel expenses. Please correct me if I am wrong.
But I do suspect SarahPac would actually not be able to pay for personal travel for Sarah’s kids unless it was for activities related to the purpose of the Pac. Any experts (that leaves ME out!) have thoughts on that?
SarahPac was created for her to cover travel expense and such to political activities that she wants to endorse of to peoples campaigns. It is regulated by the FEC which has to release statements where the money that was donated came from and where it was spent.
Because Buttercup, always the Grifter found that to restrictive she has Kristin Cole (who’s mom is wanted for embezzlement of 2 trust funds) set up “Alaska Fund Trust” or Buttercups personal ATM. There is no records of who donates, no records where the money is spent, who it is spent on, perfect slush fund.
I agree with this 100%.
We always complain about how Palin lies and misleads & misrepresents things, and it would be terrible if we all were to follow down that same path because then we would be no better than she is when it comes to being truthful.
It is one thing to ask a question because you are unsure, but to report it as fact when it isn’t will only undermine everything we are trying to do …which is get the TRUTH out there.
There is no need to resort to misrepresentation or misleading information. We have the truth on our side, we just need to vet information properly and then work on getting it out to everyone.
I completely agree, Crystalwolf, that the Trust was setup because Sarah found she could not use the Pac as a piggybank for any purpose. And I still wonder if someone told Sarah that the Trust was going to be found in violation of the Ethics Code – which might mean Sarah would have to pay all those legal bills herself…Just my opinion. Time will tell. But I think that is a plausible reason for a hasty Friday resignation, an almost panicked demeanor, and a move to go for the book and speaking fee money…
I thought there was a ethics complaint still pending about the trust fund?
The trust fund IMPO is sleazy as hell! How it can slip by IRS or anything is beyond me! But I guess Kristin Cole has advisers on setting up Trusts!
(ok that’s snark)
It would be nice to have a little more real information about who paid what – I haven’t poured over what M. Carlson said in the KO interview but when I saw it, I got the impression SP’s legal bill had been paid, and the kids travel repayment also had been provided (from PAC or AFT not clear).
But I don’t think Van Flein’s whole bill could already have been paid, not from what the accounting at the PeeLander Begathon reported anyway.
But even if it did, if they keep soliciting funds for their legal bills if they have none, isn’t that a bit, well, kinda like lying? Kinda immoral? Kinda non-Christian? Can probably get away with it until she resigns, or until the last case is resolved.
But if I were Van Flein, and I found out money from the AFT was going somewhere other than to pay me for services already rendered, I’d be mad as a wet hornet.
Ultimately it’s all just math – addition and subtraction, no matter what order you do it in, always comes out the same.
IMO the AFT should be closed upon resolution of outstanding lawyer fees through the completion of any ethics violation charge filed before she leaves office.
Vegas odds that will happen?
That would be especially important if she were going to run for Pres. in 2012, because what it comes down to is, people only have so much $$ to give. We saw how confused people were trying to decide if they should give to the PAC or to the ATF. Imagine if they had a “Palin for President” campaign fund to be asked to give to as well.
I wonder if donations to either fund are going to drop off, now that she’s appearing to … drop off?
That was a mistake on her part, to say LEGAL fund. As previously stated with so many of her lies floating around anyone can get confused.
Thanks – this finally clarifies for me why we seem to be disagreeing.
My assumption was that when Margaret identified John Coale as having set up the legal defense fund, that she was making a single error. Later, when she said the legal defense fund paid the legal expenses, I assumed she was being accurate.
You are assuming that she meant the Pac every time she said legal defense fund in the entire interview. That gives a whole new meaning to the situation, since it would completely illegal for the Pac to pay one dollar of legal expense. After all, that is why Sarah had to set up the Trust.
I apologize to anyone who may be irked by our back and forth on this. Probably the only person who can definitively settle the issue would be Margaret Carlson. I just think that if her intent was to say that SarahPac paid Sarah’s legal bills, then the interview would have been all about the scandal and legal consequences of such a misuse of Pac money.
Judges?
Maybe Palin called the hasty press conference only because it is high season for fishing and she had an excuse to don one of her Outdoorsy Woman costumes, the waders. And to take the press into the fishing boat that Todd made, like Noah.
Hi team, I just got back from the office. I have to catch up with everyone’s posts. But quickly:
Coales set up SarahPAC, as a purely political fundraising venture. It can be used for anything to do with campaigning, elections, etc. For example, if she wanted to take her family to florida as a “campaign family event,” that would be okay. But if she tried to pay off her ethics complaints with money from the PAC, it would not be. Often you have to get special permission to dip into campaign funds for any non-political purpose. But this was good advice, on the whole, for anyone who is serious about a future campaign.
On the other hand, the AFT was set up by….well, we don’t really know, but Kristen [insert last name that i dont know] is the trustee and thus she controls the entire trust. Meaning, she distributes money, she okays it, she is the only one who can dissolve it, etc. We talked about this for a long time last night in one of the threads, but the AFT was set up so ambiguously that it can be used for anything. They may say publicly that it was created as a legal defense fund, but if you read the actual wording of the trust’s purpose (the controlling clause), there is nothing specifically mentioned about legal defense. Instead, it says that the trust can be used for any costs incurred by Palin “as Governor or as a result of her actions as Governor.” Basically anything at all falls under that umbrella. Unlike the PAC, this was a bad move. I think it is a violation of the ethics law, on its face. There is no way to argue that she is not personally benefiting from her public office when the trust specifically states “as Governor.” I hope that makes sense. I will be back in a few, I have to take my puppy for a quick trip outside.
And thank you all so much for the award. I was touched and flattered beyond belief. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. It made my entire summer.
Isn’t it possible that Coales set up both funds?
Whew! Who needs liberals to shred SP to pieces when Peggy Noonan is on the job!!:
JHop, I tried to send you an email at the gmail address you gave the other day, but it bounced back. Can you send me a note at valley_independent at yahoo dot com?
I’m sorry, I know I haven’t read the other pages of posts yet, but why does it matter who set up either fund? I am missing why we are focusing on this.
Instead, I think we should focus on what we need to do to force the issue of dissolving the trust. As soon as she resigns, the trust’s purpose is arguably obsolete. You cannot change the purpose of a trust. Now, since they slyly worded it in the way that they did, they can keep it going under the “or as a result of her actions as Governor” clause. They can argue that they are still paying ethics fees, or hiring new lawyers to determine the validity of the trust, or paying moving costs to clear out her mansion and office. They can even say that she needs a massage due to the stress she incurred “as a result of her actions as Governor.” My point is that they can pretty much fit anything into that clause.
But eventually, at some point, they wont have an excuse anymore. And the trust will HAVE to be dissolved. Dont get too excited, because I assume that Kristen will just dissolve the trust and open up a new one, with a more general and ambiguous purpose for the Palins. At the same time, we should force the issue and make her deal with it. She shouldn’t tout her title as Governor and collect money because of it, when she herself claimed that she doesn’t need a title to do good things or help people or whatever ridiculous excuse she gave.
I also want to look into other statutes, as opposed to the just the ethics law or trust law. We may not be able to file suit ourselves to dissolve the trust (i am pretty sure only the state can), but we may be able to file a civil complaint in court if there is a law that coincides (i am curious about embezzlement, in particular. its definition is the conversion of property that you are in lawful possession of with the intent to steal. meaning, the trust funds are in her possession lawfully, people donated that money, it lawfully belongs to the trust. but it does not lawfully belong to sarah palin as an individual. and if she is using it as a slush fund, she is technically embezzling from her own trust. i also want to look into misappropriation of trust funds as a matter of public policy. These are just thoughts…).
Here’s press release on the judicial appointments. 3 AKns who’ll serve with distinction and honor. http://tinyurl.com/myyycc
Been meaning to mention this…….I “think” it is correct, but feel free say otherwise because I’m not real computer savvy.
We live in rural parts, our interernet provider only “allows” a household just so much bandwidth, if you go over your fair share you are put in the slow corner, very slow corner where connection is lost and hard to get on. You have to wait for like 10 days to get out of the penalty box.
Anyway, the reason I’m sharing this is because IE uses a bunch of bandwidth. I found this out the hard way last fall trying to keep up with media video coverage of all things Scarah, after about 15 days all of sudden I was having internet connection problems. I had to go into town to the library to do some researching to figure it was all about what is called fair usage of bandwidth.
It kinda goes like this, “Wild Blue” our one and only possible internet provider only gets so much “juice” from the I guess you call it air waves that they purchase and that bandwidth juice has to be divided equally amongst all it’s customers, ie. one person can’t be a hog so to speak.
Anyway, it turns out certain things eat up bandwidth fast, like videos, blinking ads…..but anything upstreaming to the internet or downstreaming as in your emails and pdf files, videos all add up to your total.
Thats when I read about using Foxfire instead of IE, I switched last fall and don’t miss it all all, I was also using AOL (hello $240.oo/yr) which loads a lot on it’s home page, now I use Modzilla Thunderbird (free!) for my mail, just basic and easy.
So if anyone is rural and you have slow connection problems bandwidth is probably your culprit. Many times it quickly adds up when teens watch movies, listen to music, or download Ipod stuff, boom in the slow corner you’ve been “Fapped” (violated the Fair Access Policy). The internet companies don’t do a real good job explaining this little “detail” to customers.
There is also this nice little free “thank you” ware that will show you how much juice you are using, it’s pretty neat. I don’t have to be too careful these days even with both the spouse and myself daily using the internet. I’m a much happier camper these days, I was not happy when I couldn’t get my mudflats, KO or RM fix.
And to pat my less than geeky self on the back, I was the one who did the digging into why this aggravating slowness was happening by reading our internet provider forum boards, low and behold under problems and solutions thread I found my answers. The geeky hubby didn’t know about it, but quickly understood, smarty pants. gah
GINO using ‘Alaska’s name ‘ as a way to raise money is just fraudulent. Has been from the very beginning. I have no idea who are the members of the previous club that was formed and listed on Immoral Minority as..
” Mothers Against Sarah Palin”. They spoke up in the past and their voice as Alaskans if they were to align themselves with some sort of a ‘ legal action ‘ might have more credibility than just a single person. Their name already says it all as well. They are defending Alaska.
And wouldn’t it look pretty bag for GINO and Meg to come out and start bashing ‘ Mothers ‘…? How could you win THAT battle in the court of Public opinion.
Does anybody have any background on the group ” Mothers Against Sarah Palin”..? Are they willing to speak up again and protest with their signs with a NEW message.
Imagine all of them protesting outside her Wasilla home or at the Governor’s Office. THAT would get on the News.
Okay, one more thing, then I’m going to spare you all my company for a few hours:
I had to laugh yesterday morning (I’m pretty sure it was yesterday) when I heard Laura Ingraham grousing about Michelle O carrying a “$6,000 Louis Vuitton purse” in Russia. Anybody remember this one?
Really, who cares what kind of purse the first lady carries, as long as taxpayer dollars didn’t pay for it. Good for her if she can afford nice things.
AKM-
You relize, of course, that the weekend you decided to take off and go decompress will be the weekend that all of the serious excrement impacts the rotary air circulating device, right?
Well, I emailed Margaret Carlson, and she responded that she has interviewed John Coale twice, and he clearly said he setup the Alaska Fund Trust!
From her email:
“I interviewed John Coale twice, the latest time yesterday. He was clear about setting up the Alaska Trust. I did not address SarahPac so don’t know about that. I sure hope he knows what he actually set up. Thanks for the note, Margaret”
This supports my interpretation of her Countdown interview to mean that it was the Alaska Fund Trust, not SarahPac, that paid most of Palin’s legal bills for travelgate, the per diem complaint, and other ethics complaints.
Ya know folks, the pre resignation Gov’s picnic in Wasilla is on July 24…many of us could show up there to give Palin the send off she is entitled to.
It’s at Iditarod Park from 5:30pm-8:30pm.
I can’t get to Fairbanks for the actual 7/26 “turnover the reigns to Sean Parnell” Gov’s picnic, so this is the only option for me to get a final glimpse of our fair Gov before she’s gone.
Anyone else in for this? I’m certain that Phil Munger will be there both as journalist and most likely as musician. It might be fun to lurk around and get to meet some of our favorite AK bloggers in person if they choose to attend. We could all wear lime green shirts or something so we could recognize each other.
honestyinGov –
i agree that AFT is a very misleading name, insinuating charity or good-will for the state, when it is really about selfish greed. but i am trying to think of what that would full under… it could be a privacy tort, called appropriation. basically, appropriation is when a defendant uses a plaintiff’s name or picture for commercial purposes. for example, if wheaties put derek jeter on its box without permission, he can sue. if i found out that someone was using my name and blogging under it, while making money off web ads, i could sue. there is an argument, actually a decent one, to say that palin is guilty of appropriation, because she is clearly using the state of alaska, it’s name, solely for commercial purposes. the thing is, the state would have to be the one to sue i think. but that doesn’t mean we couldnt bring a complaint (i mean, for a rape or murder case, the state also has to sue, but clearly there are personal interests involved for the victims and their families; it is their lawsuit even if it says State of Alaska v. Murderer). for this type of thing, we would have to go to alaskan statutes. the laws are all very different per state for these types of torts.
and i think it is a really good idea to get a “legitimate” group (i mean no offense to us bloggers) to stand up to palin. it has always frustrated me that “feminist” has such a negative connotation (that we are butch lesbians, who burn our bras, and hate men – i assure you that this one does not); i feel the same way about “blogger.” As if it makes us any less intelligent or informed or professional. Nevertheless, there is a negative connotation with bloggers and it makes it easier for her to dismiss us as crazy people who live in our parents’ basement and spend our lives just making hers miserable because we are suuuuuch losers. so i think enlisting the support of any group, particularly one like mothers, or a PTA, a philanthropic organization, etc. would be a terrific idea.
good post honestyingov!
” Mothers Against Sarah Palin”. They spoke up in the past and their voice as Alaskans if they were to align themselves with some sort of a ‘ legal action ‘ might have more credibility than just a single person. Their name already says it all as well. They are defending Alaska.
And wouldn’t it look pretty bag for GINO and Meg to come out and start bashing ‘ Mothers ‘…? How could you win THAT battle in the court of Public opinion.
Does anybody have any background on the group ” Mothers Against Sarah Palin”..? Are they willing to speak up again and protest with their signs with a NEW message.
Imagine all of them protesting outside her Wasilla home or at the Governor’s Office. THAT would get on the News.
sorry i meant to delete your post that follows what i wrote..i only copied and pasted so i could respond.
Excellent follow through. While I would not have guessed that Coale set up the Trust, I would not have been surprised it was his idea. Now it has been confirmed it shows that he is much more involved with Sarah than he and his wife (Greta) have previously claimed.
Bubbles…..I have bought a pair or two of comfortable shoes. That is all so far! Can’t wait to meet you!!
The lines between the Fund & the Pac became very blurred in that I seem to recall at the time the Fund was first introduced, the Pac had supposedly shut down. There were articles that the person operating the Pac quit as they could not deal with Palin. It was also at that time there were a number of posts here that kept asking and looking for the disclosure filing by the Pac as if I recall, there should have been a first filing within a certain number of days after start-up of the Pac. But that didn’t seem to happen in the midst of the chaos. As of yet, I don’t recall seeing any disclosure documentation filed as I’m sure there would have been links by someone here.
We have since of course learned the Pac never went away. That was some game play. There now of course is the link to the legal fund on the Pac site which continues to add to the some possible grey area.
I would not be surprised to know that Coale was behind both of them. The Pac info of his participation came to light, whereas disclosure of any participation by him setting up the Fund did not. Coale, if involved, would have retained and instructed others to what was needed and those others would construct and draft what is on the Fund writings on the website, thereby hiding himself. I also recall something about how they took bits and parts from a number of various Legal Trust Funds to construct the document — all of which were outside AK as I noticed they did not use Don Young’s but did use Bill Clinton’s. There were a list of about 6 funds they used.
That’s enough — my brain is tired!! I’m at the bottom of the garbage bin in my brain!!
Rob in CA,
While Coale may have “set up” as in “set in motion” the trust, or even been consulted on it, the people whose signatures are on the trust documents is Blattmacher and Kristen Cole.
I think Coale may be puffing up his involvement somewhat. Why he would want to do such a thing is anybody’s guess. As a lawyer, I would want to stay the h-e-double-hockeysticks away from that mess. But then, he has been cited by the Bar before.
Rob: “This supports my interpretation of her Countdown interview to mean that it was the Alaska Fund Trust, not SarahPac, that paid most of Palin’s legal bills for travelgate, the per diem complaint, and other ethics complaints.”
i am confused. where did the question about this come from? your analysis is perfect, but why were we doubting that the AFT paid for her legal expenses? that is the “general” point of the trust. it would be illegal to use the PAC for anything but election/campaign related stuff, without explicit permission from the FEC
that was the issue with ensign – if he had paid off his mistress with his own money or his campaign’s. if it was his campaign, he would have been in a huge amount of trouble. even criminally. (but instead, it turns out it was neither his money or his PACs…it was his parents. what 60 something year old U.S. senator has to ask his mom to pay off his mistress?!)
They didn’t cut and paste or even borrow. They just invited the public to compare the documents for each fund to the oh-so-strict-and-ethical-squeaky-clean Fund Trust Document.
EyeOnYou
Thanks. I was just as surprised, though I too thought it was quite possible that John Coale had suggested the idea.
I am still quite shocked that he is told Margaret that most of Sarah’s legal bills have been paid, since that would seem to take away the incentive for people to continue to donate to the Trust if word got around much.
I also wonder how ‘most’ of her bills have been paid, if that is in fact true. A huge push on the AFT resulted in $108,000 in contributions – and that supposedly included the earlier contributions, right? How does that cover what has been variously described as $500-600,000 in legal bills? Either the bills are less than stated, the contributions are more than stated, or there is another source besides the AFT that has paid on those legal bills.
It is amazing how this lack of transparency and honesty just feeds more confusion and speculation and suspicion.
Count me as confused, speculative…and deeply, deeply suspicious.
Jhop, thank you for sharing your wisdom!
Are you aware of Kristen Cole’s Mother’s “trust fund embezzlement problem”?
And that Kristen Cole was involved in DairyGate?
That little piece of braggin in Scarah’s I quit speech about getting the state out of the dairy business and put into the private sector is rather interesting? I’m surprised she brought it up, brag, wipe her hands clean before it goes under so she can say didn’t happen on my watch.
do ya think Valley Dairy is being investigated? Scarah would most likely know if it was, grapevine friend thingy.
http://www.andrewhalcro.com/palins_agriculture_board_got_fraud
“Since Governor Palin and DNR Commissioner Tom Irwin appear content to look the other way while the Agriculture Board uses taxpayer money like it’s their own, the state legislature needs to ask for an audit of the loan process undertaken by the Ag Board.
There are internal emails that will clearly show that this loan should have been denied given state statutes and prudent lending practices. Reviewing the attached emails from Karen Olson, shows a group of people who have a proven track record of defaulting on government loans and are doing all they can to protect themselves at taxpayer expense.
This time around, they have a helping hand with friends and neighbors in high places and on the Agriculture Board who are only concerned about keeping a money losing dairy afloat at taxpayer expense.
Ironically, the Valley Dairy, which is a private dairy, has asked for more help from the state in three months than the state owned Matanuska Maid did in twenty three years.
The USDA needs to investigate the grant and subsequent support of the Valley Dairy, including the actions of Chad Padgett and Dean Stewart who facilitated this loan. The original loan $650,000 loan called for a match, which was Robert Gottsteins Palmer water bottling plant. Gottstein pulled out, but yet the loan was still awarded.
DEC needs to investigate the milk spillage behind the dairy, the dairy’s practice of dumping milk into their septic system and the removal of tainted cheese after it was tagged as contaminated.
The Human Rights Commission is already investigating the dismissal of Amy Moore and Kay Schaugaard.
If Governor Palin was at all honest about open and transparent government, she would have never appointed such an incestuous group of people to manage the purse strings of Alaska’s agricultural community.”
problem child – those other trust documents are still on the website. i havent looked at the others. but it would be interesting to see how their “purpose” clauses were worded and how they compare to the ambiguous one that palin has.
The issue came up because of some rather vague remarks made last night by Margaret Carleson on Olbermann. People were not sure if she was referring to the Trust or to the PAC, to paying the bill or the legal bills for the children’s travel.
irish girl. excellent! people don’t realize how much new yorkers walk. whenever i have folks from out of town they are usually knocked out and footsore before we even get where we are going. also when you get here buy yourself a regular metro card. this way you can jump on a bus and then transfer across avenues. don’t worry manhattan is easy to navigate….bubs
Agreed, Rob in CA!
Very suspicious.
I imagine that a lot of people’s confusion stemmed from exactly those underlying assumptions/ concerns.
JHop Says
The misunderstanding is from an interview given last night on Keith Olberman. His guest, Margaret Carlson of Bloomberg News is the one who reported that John Coale, husband of Greta Van Sustern, told her that the legal bills had been paid off already. There was some confusion as to who paid off the bills, the Legal Fund or the PAC, since it has been widely known that Coale is the one who set up the PAC for Sarah. It was not widely known until Rob in CA got confirmation from Margaret Carlson that she had spoken to Coale and he stated he is the one who set up the Legal Defense Fund.
Because Coale was being referenced, it was thought that he was talking about the PAC rather than the Trust due to knowledge that he was clearly associated with the PAC.
Rob in Ca
If you accept that the Trust can only accept $150.00 per person per year, then it would need 4000 people to pay off the claimed $600,000.00 legal expense.
Honestly that isn’t that many people, and we know for a fact that Palin fan sites were encouraging people to donate and get family and friends to donate as well, going so far as to tell people that if family or friends didn’t have the money, then give it to them to donate.
JHop Says:
The confusion about this arose in a post on Immoral Minority, which seems to suggest that AFT and SarahPac paid the bills. Some commenters also felt that the travel expenses had been paid on the Palin’s behalf, which was not alleged in Carlson’s interview. Similar confusion was being expressed in comments here, and in the back and forth I finally realized that the reason for the confusion was an assumption that Margaret Carlson said legal defense fund buy MEANT to say SarahPac. That assumption was untrue, as I found when I went to the source and emailed Margaret.
If you can follow this explanation, you MUST be a heck of an attorney!
Rob
It should also be pointed out that when SarahPAC was in transition between the DC area to an Alaskan based set up the PAC had put up a notification for people to donate to the Trust instead. In fact they still have a link to the Trust on the Website to send people in that direction to donate as well.
Hooray for all you legal eagles. I’m not commenting as I really can’t contribute…but I am listening avidly, also, too and there!
Eye on You..that is true, and so interesting about the AFT link on the SarahPac website. I have always wondered if that was the reason Becki Donatelli and her company quit SarahPac the day the AFT was announced. There is a story behind that coincidence, and Donatelli is apparently such a pro that there has not been a whisper about it to my knowledge.
thanks problemchild for explaining that. i didnt see it the interview.
Rob “How does that cover what has been variously described as $500-600,000 in legal bills? Either the bills are less than stated, the contributions are more than stated, or there is another source besides the AFT that has paid on those legal bills.”
there is no way in HELL that her legal expenses are this high. first of all, they can always claim attorney-client privilege if they are ever asked. it is protected, so for all we know her legal expenses are $4.11, plus tax. and they have an incentive to blow up that number as high as it can go. they want people to donate more money for the exact reasons that you said. i dont mean to sound elitist when i say this, but people like you, like any of us, are watching these news shows and processing the information like normal, rational, thinking individuals. i really dont think the majority of her supporters care, watch cable tv, would understand if in fact they did watch tv, or parse words in an analytical manner like we do. i mean, we are the beaker to their cookie monster; the obama to their bush; the jack to their hurley (ps: i am obsessed with lost); the mickey to their goofy; the jodie foster to their lindsay lohan. they just don’t f-ing care.
okay so i am elitist. sue me.
The article from the ADN that was posted above is pretty interesting….
“The administrative director in the governor’s office, Linda Perez, conceded that some costs were counted twice and said “the total cost is overstated by $26,849.” She said she missed that the Department of Law’s updated numbers included costs that were already counted.
“It was my error…mea culpa,” said Perez, who has worked for governors of both parties since the 1980s.
http://community.adn.com/adn/node/142302?mi_pluck_action=comment_submitted#Comments_Container
from the above ADN article:
cont.
Perez said she’s going to ask the Department of Law about some other puzzling parts of the spreadsheet, including a line item that says 0.3 attorney hours added up to $10,063 in costs. That would add up to an attorney billing of over $30,000 an hour, and Perez said the flat billing rate the state uses for its attorneys is $121.98 an hour. Perez said she would check and see what costs beyond the staff time went into that calculation of over $10,000 in costs.
this is a good point. we really shouldn’t try to be so logical about this. they throw out made-up numbers all the time. i have little doubt that there is a co-mingling of funds and they use the money however they need to and they just make sure they document it however it should actually look. do we really think that if palin spent 10K on, i dont know, new fishing waders made with the tears of african children and diamonds, that they would write that? no. clearly, on paper, that 10K went to the $48935173453245435 in their alleged legal expenses. we shouldnt believe a word they say about this. it is beyond sketchy and we should take anything as fact.
Great point, JHop. And why I am so surprised that John Coale, Sarah’s would-be Svengali, would have slipped and said that most of her legal bills are now paid. Why would he take away from her pity party? Perhaps just a slip. Most of us have them, and some of us are blessed with a lot of them…
It may not have been a slip. We know from what JHop has stated that the Trust isn’t going to be able to be freely used once Palin leaves office (or that it may cause problems), so this may have been a “deliberate” slip to direct donations back towards the PAC.
Interesting little tidbit. When the fund trust was first set up, many of us entered the address as Alaska Trust Fund and it brought us to the Alaskan Outdoor Council site which also has an Alaska Trust Fund. I remember posting I couldn’t find her fund site. Palin’s fund has taken over that now as this is the link to the Alaskan Outdoor Council est. 1999:
These are at least 8 address entries that will take you to the Palin trust which includes the site name they must have purchased from the outdoor council
The press will have to cover it and – voila! – Alaskans are forever heroes to the world (o:
reasonably speaking, lets assume her attorney charges $200/billable hour. i dont know what prices in AK go for. but that is reasonable. maybe $250. but my thinking is that, because she is the governor and a very high profile client who brings in lots of other clients, that if anything, they would charge her less than a standard price. so i will stick with 200 for the moment.
i write, i dont calculate. so someone double check me on this.
okay so 600,000 in legal bills/200 per hour = THREE THOUSAND BILLABLE HOURS?!?!
did i do that right? that is nuts. if we assume that her attorneys work 8 hour days, just for her, that would be 375 full days. there is no way, i mean NO WAY, that is possible. even if she is her attorneys sole client (which she isnt), there is just no way you can ethically bill like that. it would be working year round, every day, 8 hours a day, only for sarah palin. they have a big firm, there is no way they that they dont have lots and lots of other clients.
FWIW, I recommended JHop’s comment on ADN; I was number 71. Also, regarding Margaret Carlson’s comments on KO last night, she said that SarahPac paid for the children’s travel reimbursement and that the AFT paid the legal bills. Info came from John Coale, Greta’s spouse. So, apparently Buttercup doesn’t have any money of her own at all? Her consequences are paid for by others, and her personal income remains in tact. Nice perks. Can any private citizen set up a legal defense fund? I suppose if you’re high profile enough it would work, but hard to imagine getting other people to pay for my traffic tickets (not that I have any).
I think it is a little of both.
JHop…
My thinking on this is that they don’t want to come out and announce that all the legal bills are paid, because a) it can still be used as a talking point, and b) if money is still being donated to the Trust, they are working on a way to use that to their benefit. They have more leeway in using the Trust money for ordinary things, whereas the PAC is regulated and is subjected to Federal Guidelines. I know that they can still find ways to run the scam on the PAC like you said, but it will be subjected to scrutiny like the Trust isn’t. No one is watching the Trust. I stated before that the Federal Government has said that the Trust is a state issue, and the APOC who would oversee this Trust has said that they have no intention of doing so. It is pretty much clear of interference.
Having it “slip” out there via someone else, it will be picked up on by some and they will simply direct their donations back to the PAC.
Irishgirl,
I hit submit before I meant to.
One trip that we left old clothes & shoes in the garbage bins in the hotel room, shortly after out return, 2 boxes were delivered to my home. The hotel returned them with a note believing we had forgot them!!!!
ADN: “That’s an average rate of $86 an hour. Perez said that doesn’t mean governor’s office employees are being paid an average salary of $85 an hour. She said those figures don’t reflect just the salary they get, but also their benefits and other costs the stay pays to employ them.”
Same old. On-going, daily costs tied to the Palin admin’s over-reaching “lawsuit” claims. Is someone keeping a list of administrators and staff willing to back up patent lies? Because it might be time for a good sweep of the lower echelons in the state government.
EyeonYou –
I agree with your analysis. The one thing I can see is that, if and when they are forced to dissolve the trust, the people who gave money to it are going to be pissed off and wondering where the hell their donations went. Like I said earlier, I think they will just put it in a new trust. But the general public wont just know that. especially her general public.
And you make a good point about trusts being unregulated. you are right, trusts are one of the most “secretive” things under the law. there is little to no regulation and it is nearly impossible to prove wrongdoing because most documents, etc related to a trust are confidential. really good point.
jc in co,
2) They’re all swingers (talk about throwing up in your mouth!)
——–
I think we all did!!!!
I just find it strange in that Coale was working with Hillary — ‘D’ and moved on to Palin –’R’. The only similarity — they’re Female.
So back at ya for ‘throwing up in your mouth’! I did!! LOL
Having seen pictures of Coale – Shivers!! Nightmares!!
Canadian Neighbour,
lol
there are SO many sketchy issues when it comes to Scarah……she deserves to go down in flames and benefit as little as possible from all her lies and terrible decision. GAH
this little gem is about when the PDF (the free state money) files went missing, could not all be reconstructed so it was done manually, with no disclosure! she’s the first gov ever to not disclose this information.
http://palingates.blogspot.com/2009/06/sarah-palin-is-so-transparent.html
“Shortly after she was elected governor, Palin’s office signed off on hiring Deborah Richter — who attended college for a year then worked in bookkeeping and finance jobs — as director of a division that distributes dividends to Alaskans from the state’s oil-wealth savings account. Richter, who said she’s known Palin for 13 years, was Palin’s gubernatorial campaign treasurer and ran her inaugural committee.
The Richters and Palins also shared an investment: 30 acres of rural property near a lake in Petersville, Alaska, worth $47,300, according to Matanuska-Susitna Borough data.”
Bubbles, if we see UK Lady, let’s ask her!
Say NO to Palin in Politics–as if it were possible, I hear rumor that Campbell’s even MORE anti-Juneau than Buttercup… urgh!
Also, Deborah Richter is now Deborah Bitney…
IrishGirl–as a follow-up to Canadian Neighbour’s suggestion, if you have old clothes and shoes that are still in good enough shape that you just don’t want any more, but want to use to fill your suitcase, I’m sure there would be a shelter in NYC that might be happy for a donation (just no old underwear or socks).
Physicsmom Says:
July 10th, 2009 at 12:43 PM
…. Also, regarding Margaret Carlson’s comments on KO last night, she said that SarahPac paid for the children’s travel reimbursement and that the AFT paid the legal bills
Actually, SarahPac was not mentioned in Margarets comments, and the travel reimbursement was NOT claimed to have been paid by either SarahPac or the Alaska Fund Trust. Only the legal bills associated with the travel complaint were paid, and paid by the Trust. This is according to Margaret’s intervew with John Coale, and Margaret personally confirmed this to me today in an email.
Ah, some “rumors” and truths from the Capital and the Capitol (been meaning to post these on an open thread since yesterday):
From the Capital: The “12th longest continuously occupied governor’s mansion” plaque (installed by Murky) has been removed (good thing, as it’s no longer true!) and been replaced by a “Welcome to Alaska” or some such thing like that plaque (I’ll have to go get photos).
From the Capitol: The “Countdown” clock sign is back, still apparently counting down to the end of this gubanatorial term; guess Parnell wanted it back?
AND
The official portrait photos of the govs, which have ALWAYS been arranged with the first one on the upper left of the set (making it EASY to add the most recent at the end of line), have been reordered so that Buttercup’s is at the top left, so that it’s the first one one sees as one stops at the third floor of the Capitol. Anyone want to lay odds on how quickly they’ll return to their “normal” order on July 26?
Oh, one other funny from the Capital: One of the State mail trucks (they’re always dusty) has had “Sarah Bailin’” written in the dust on the back of it. I spotted it yesterday or the day before.
@JHop — I share your disbelief at the $500-600K billing. It’s even worse than you think:
1. Van Flein (Palin’s personal lawyer for Troopergate, et seq) is reported to bill at $185, so your $200 estimate is quite reasonable.
2. They’ve been throwing the 500-600K number around for months now — at least back as far as the establishment of the AFT. If you look at the Personnel Board’s and DOL’s description of expenses on various ethics complaints, it is obvious that almost all of Palin’s personal legal expenses must relate to Troopergate. I mean, for any given complaint, it cannot be true that Van Flein’s billing exceeds the sum of the outside-attorney and DOL attorney charges (unless he’s padding ferociously).
3. The thing about the Personnel Board’s version of Troopergate is that it only lasted for two months, from early September until the day before the election, when they rendered absolution. Let’s suppose that $300K is due to Troopergate, at $200/hr, thus 1500 BILLABLE hours, compressed into at most 9 calendar weeks. That’s not one, but FOUR full time attorneys. Who were those guys, I wonder?
she’s been hiding stuff from the get go, lol, I didn’t know the citizens had to pay for a mistake made by her administration, how embarressing, no wonder she dropped transparent and went for opaque.
People have been fighting for records ever since she started and she’s been bucking them all the way, labeling them anklebiters, oh Scarah, you should be ashamed of yourself.
I wonder if the math on this one is correct.
“Eventually, the reports were released – minus the explanation of what had happened at the Permanent Fund Division.
Juneau freelance reporter Bob Tkacz was one of the reporters asking for the transition reports. He was dismayed at the response from a governor who had campaigned on openness.
“No other governor in my experience has ever kept those reports confidential, and certainly never censored them in the way the Palin administration did,” he said.”
……………………..
Rebecca Braun, publisher of the Alaska Budget Report, attributed the initial withholding of the public documents to the administration’s being a new one.
Palin came into office after campaigning on a platform of transparent government, and then found itself hit with media requests for documents that might prove embarrassing.
“That’s what transparency means, you may have to give up documents you are uncomfortable giving up,” she said.
Recovering from the Permanent Fund Division data loss involved calling in temporary workers to reconstruct lost data. Applications from the increasing number of applications filed online were able to be recovered; but paper applications had to be reconstructed by hand.
Richter said it cost about $220,000 to recover from the loss, but no dividend payment was late because of it.
Under state law that cost will come out of next year’s dividend, she said. That cost is estimated at 37 cents per person.
Does anyone still doubt his info?
218 canadian neighbor~~ that happened to me toooo….LMBO thought i was i step ahead….
bubbles and irishgirl, the forum and chat section might be really helpful to you guys…
It’s just too hard to track the posts.
InJuneau.
Good idea about the clothes. The ones returned to me were sweatshirts with worn out holed elbows, jeans that had tears and paint covered. I wouldn’t even use to go outside to do gardening. We always used to keep the “old” stuff like that as empty suitcases just caused too many problems at customs.
Injuneau, does Deborah still work for the state?
“She created a political-action committee—Sarahpac—with the help of John Coale, a prominent Democratic trial lawyer. But just months into its existence the pac’s chief fund-raiser, Becki Donatelli, a veteran of Republican campaigns, suddenly quit. One person familiar with the situation told me that Donatelli could not stand dealing with Palin’s political spokeswoman in Alaska, Meghan Stapleton, who has drawn withering fire from Palin friends and critics alike for being an ineffective adviser. Also with Coale’s help, Palin formed the grandiosely named Alaska Fund Trust, to defray a reported half million dollars in legal expenses arising from a slew of formal ethics complaints against her in her home state—prompting yet another formal complaint, that the fund itself constitutes an ethical breach. Onetime supporters have become harsh critics. ”
I think the Miss Sarah just jumped from the frying pan into the fire!! In Alaska she was a big fish in a small pond, not many were paying attention, but she’s soon to be a tiny guppy in the ocean and there are a lot of sharks in that ocean. They will all be ready to eat her alive. I don’t believe she going to run for Pres, she’s just keeping that string dangling in front of her supporters so the money keeps coming in to her Pac and Fund. She quit because that frying pan was just getting to HOT!!!
oh my gosh, is AKM going to miss the iceberg? but what a treat to come back and find her melted. ding dong the *itch is dead, this is a matter of speech not a death threat. which btw, I read on the witty Forbes Shynnyn interview that she is giving all death threats to the FBI. so heads up cult members who actually do that awful stuff.
For those who may have missed it…..this was posted on Prog. Alaska and well as just mentioned on the Blog Net News ( a link I found on Immoral Minority)
(coming up in about an hour now )
I wonder what Bob Poe might say to Eddie..? Put that red-Shirt of his in the trash..?
——————
Alaska gubernatorial candidate, Democrat Bob Poe, will be on KBYR’s Eddie Burke program today, between 3:30 and 5:00 p.m.
Bob is going to challenge Eddie to move into the Post-Palin world.
Ahhhh. I’m hearing the sound of “chip chip chip” at the flimsy foundation that is Sarah Palin.
New ethics complaint just came down relating to paid appearances on TV and radio after the election. I heard it and Eddie Burke’s whine about 15 minutes ago. That’s two!!
I can’t believe it! So SP isn’t the Great Orator that we have thought! She has a “Speecher!!!”
Meet the Press just announced an exclusive story on Palin on Sunday, I don’t know anything more about it.
Palin’s claims about legal expenses and begging for money makes the scam e-mails from the “widow of the former oil minister of Kenya” look authentic.
Just another ploy to get money from her Idiot Base, and they are so stupid they can’t wait to write a check. Sarah’s evolution- from Governor Grifter, to Ex-Governor Grifter, to Grifter. Those outside the Idiot Base will rapidly tire of her.
Remember how the Octo-Mom went from national obsession to nowhere in a few weeks, when everyone realized she was a nut, a publicity hound, a scam artist and a grifter? Sarah appears to be going down the same path…
Say NO to Palin in Politics–Yes, she’s still the Division Director of the Permanent Fund Dividend.
so the 1.9 mill in costs to AK state are not correct, so will Buttercup unquit herself knowing it didn’t really cost that much? Just teasing about her unquitting. lol I’m about to head on home, I suspect the drive will be horrible, but not as horrible as what bailin Palin is in for in a few days. lol
I’ve heard talk about it, but at this point it’s just a rumor.”
anybody else hear this rumour ?”"
I have, but it was Palin appearing to line herself out for that job. It was Republican supporter rumor/speculation before the quitting-fighting.
My sister and I just had a very good and long laugh. She lives in Fairbanks and had called me to tell me that GINO was going to be on a radio show at 8pm on KFAR660.com She said that there’ll be callers calling in and Ted Nugent is supposed to call in also, too. So, I had downloaded the program and she said, “darn, I can’t download it on my laptap so, I can’t listen to it.” Then, 5 minutes later she just cracked up laughing. I didn’t catch it but she did. She said, “What am I thinking about?” “I can turn my radio on right here and listen to it.” We never laughed so hard in such a long time. Was waaayyy too funny.
A while ago I compared the AFT with Ted Stevens’ legal expeses trust. I have posted the differences that I found most intersting in the Forum under Sara Palin/Legal defence fund. Mostly they are the incredible powers it gives Kristen Cole. Stevens’ looks like pre-volcano snow compared to the other one.
Drat- spelling- expenses, interesting. I don’t usually blow 2 in one post.
LOL, GINo telling host how handsome he is in his tie.
She’s proud to put her stamp on the bills, bragging about safe guarding rights.
oh, my God…I almost spit on my monitor…
http://mamadance.wordpress.com/2009/07/08/look-out-shes-loaded/
wow, Ted N. is a GINO suck up.
KFAR660.com and you can listen to GINO on radio talking about 2nd amendment.
As regards leaving old clothes etc. in hotel rooms — or anywhere — Heinlein once wrote that a good man shoots his own darn dog. Or words to that effect. We wash our own plates, wipe our childrens’ noses, don’t abandon blown tires in the middle of the road… there’s gotta be a principle in there somewhere.
I read Halcro’s “Valley Dairy: Got Fraud?”
I sincerely wonder if this is it. You know.
It sure looks horrifying in my first read-through.
Hi Rob in CA ! Re #105 – Thanks for clearing up my misunderstanding. I totally agree that information we share needs to be accurate. Don’t want to spread errors. Like Anderson Cooper says, “keeping them honest”.
Thanks Rebekkah for the response! I had a misunderstanding of my own and we all keep each other on track….seems to work!
Miss Thing in Fairbanks today: Very rah-rah sis-boom-ba. About 100 people, mostly supporters. “We love you Sarah!”. Ugh. No questions, no autographs, no photos with. She’s got A LOT of handlers. 1 great sign: “I’m ready for my close up Mr Hannity!”.
Anyone listening to Palin on Fairbanks radio? It’s a hoot – she and her wingnut hosts are laying out the Dem strategy that’s funding the attacks against Palin through ACORN! lol
I’m listening to it closet mudpup. It just makes me want to puke.
Palin: Fairbanks is the most Real place in AK!!
Lots of God Blessin’s and she done.
Closet Mudpup, did you hear her say that most of the frivulous complaints were done by names that didn’t even exist and they talked about the name Emma Birch from a soap opera years ago and that they had to spend money defending it even though the person didn’t even exist. What a fricking liar she is. Also, too, did you hear her tell the caller to tell his daughter that she is not a quitter, that she quit to have the freedom to do what she wants to do now. She has no shackles now that she is not gov.
here_in_PA Break out the tinfoil hats – it’s Firearms Friday!! lol
ravenstrick “I’m ready for my close up Mr Hannity!”.
Now that’s funny. lol
here_in_PA
I tuned in just when she was talking about the anonymous complaints – didn’t hear that call response.
Closet Mudpup, you need to tune into Rachel Maddow, she is just said that GINO just made her first public appearance since the wader interviews and she mentioned Ted Nugent so, it must be about the radio show that just aired.
ROFLMAO, I really should reread before I hit the submit button, “she is just”, hahhaha, take out the is!!!
ACORN???? Democrats?? That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard all day!
Does $arah think Republican grannies will cash in their insurance policies for her so much quicker if Angry repeats this sh*t?
here_in_PA – I’ll have to wait ’til it’s posted to her website – no cable here. In fact, no teevee at all, now. No way am I hookin’ up one of them Soros/Obama mind controllin’ converter boxes in my house!
Aussie Blue Sky – The wingnut talkies took the lead on some of that – apparently the ACORN/personal destruction machine is one of those generally known wingfacts.
Hi wonderful posters!
I’m so impressed with the info that I read here. The Trust Fund crapola vs. the SarahPac crapola is so interesting! Thank you!
The ADN/Sean Cockerham reported that the #’s Palin reported are wrong. duh, but thank you for putting it out there for the AK residents. One of the most funny/interesting things is that they included the COST OF BENEFITS for employees into the total cost.
So yeah, you make 75K a year, 10K to pension, 10K for health insurance, 2K for the copier machine that employee uses, 3K for the office space that that employee uses (I’m just pulling #’s out of my head – but THAT’S OK), so you end up with an employee cost of 100K. WHAT A JOKE.
They should be ASHAMED. They really should. How can you trust anything they say after this…..
Rob in Ca Says:
And this is why Mudflats has developed such a great reputation…the people who gather here don’t perpetuate lies just to justify our opinions. AKM and the moderators keep everyone on track, and we admit and correct any mistakes that are made. Buttercup and her minions could take a lesson…
