Getting curious about truthfullness in all things Sarah Palin, I did a bit of casual fact-checking on her resume and actual employment. It turns out that she wasn’t reeaallya sports newscaster. She just played one on TV. She was an unpaid intern who got her big break on Superbowl Sunday 1988. And then quit.
This is nothing new; it was researched last fall. Fact is, most of us didn’t care and didn’t pay attention. Now we are. It speaks to an ongoing history of getting by with tiny deceptions. And continuously quitting for something better…

    http://openline.medialine.com/archive/index.php/t-25529.html
The assignment editor at KTUU-TV in Anchorage, Alaska, confirms that Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, was once a sports intern at the NBC affiliate.
Alaska Broadcasters Association spokesperson Darlene Simono said she was at the station for “less than three months,” March through May of 1988.
Wikipedia reported her as a one-time sport reporter, but it is not clear whether that was referring to the internship at KTUU, Bennett said he didn’t think she had gone to another station after her stint at KTUU, but did not know for sure.

    From Intern to City Council
College degree in hand, Ms. Palin moved back to Alaska and, one afternoon in late 1987, walked into KTUU-Channel 2 in search of work.
John Hernandez, then the sports director, offered her an unpaid internship. By early 1988, Mr. Hernandez asked Ms. Palin to fill in for a sports anchor on his night off. “She was nervous and stiff, pretty much like she was reading off the teleprompter,” Mr. Hernandez recalled, adding that it was nevertheless a respectable debut.
For a few months, Ms. Palin was paid as a substitute anchor, and Mr. Hernandez said he saw in her someone who might have worked her way into bigger markets and who appeared, in a brief time, to have found new confidence.

    Former TV boss remembers Palin
John Hernandez, a San Diego horse racing consultant with Las Vegas ties, was sports director at KTUU-TV in Anchorage, Alaska, from 1984 to 1988. In late 1987, Hernandez was summoned to the TV station’s front desk to interview a job applicant.
Her name was Sarah Heath and “she was fresh out of the University of Idaho. She was 24 years old, very outgoing, very eager,” he said.
Hernandez hired her as an unpaid sports intern and taught her how to put together a sportscast, from writing to editing video.
“Typically in commercial TV, an intern is very rarely presented an opportunity to get airtime,” he said in a telephone interview.
But her big chance came a couple of months after being hired when Hernandez’ weekend anchor asked for the day off on the day of the 1988 Super Bowl.

Ian is an 18 year old young man (and the son of our admin – Lani) who is heavily involved in politics. He would love to win one of the Netroot’s scholarships. He needs more votes though. So anyone who has already voted for AKM and Shannyn, it should be very easy to pop over to Netroots and vote for Ian. Palin Lawyer releases statement on latest ethics complaint:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 10, 2009

When Governor Palin announced that she would be resigning, in part, because of the unusual number of frivolous ethics complaints burdening the state of Alaska, that was not intended to be an invitation to file more frivolous ethics complaints. Not everyone got the message. As if to underscore the Governor’s point, two more frivolous complaints were filed this week.

For example, Raymond A. Ward (DOB 1947) 1., has apparently filed a state ethics complaint (No. 19) incorrectly alleging that the Governor has appeared on “television and radio variety shows earning and accepting money for personal and private use on state time.” These allegations are categorically false. Though signed under “penalty of purgery” (sic) it is apparent that Mr. Ward has no factual basis for the statements he has made.

Governor Palin has never been paid an appearance fee or received other remuneration from any “television or radio” show. She has not been paid for any media interview. The allegations made by Mr. Ward have no basis in truth.

In releasing the complaint publicly today, Mr. Ward violated the confidentiality provision of the Ethics Act. Mr. Ward is apparently no stranger to the Alaska court system apparently with a collection of criminal and civil matters allegedly involving him, including possible allegations of: filing a false report, illegal use of the telephone, criminal trespass, domestic violence, vehicle tampering, and DUI. Ward’s attorney in some of those past cases–Rex Butler.

Attached are Courtview print-outs as well as an updated list of ethics complaints.

THOMAS VAN FLEIN—Personal Attorney for Governor Palin

    1. There are other “Raymond Wards” not at issue here who have different dates of birth.

There are attachments listing all of the “ethics complaints” but I cannot link due to the site that they are shown on. Oddly enough I can’t find this “press release” anywhere else …yet.

Also, if I understood the AK law, private citizens are under NO obligation for secrecy, only government employees and officials are held to that standard. If true, what are the repercussions on Van Flein for knowingly and publicly lying about the law?

    For Immediate Release:

To Van Flein: Apparently you have so much free time that you can write an unprofessional smear piece about Mr. Wards. Also, your self-serving claim that Palin has not been paid, as alleged by Mr. Wards, is irrefutably rank hearsay, because you obviously have no personal knowledge of the facts that you allege to be true. In other words, your allegations prove absolutely nothing.

It is curious that you have so much free time, yet still have not filed the lawsuit you threatened against Ms. Moore a week ago. What happened to your lame “crying-wolf” threat on behalf of your sleazy paper tiger client — Sarah “the serial quitter” Palin?

Grow a pair of balls Van Flein and sue when you threaten to, or shut up and crawl back into the coward and bully sewer you and Palin are from.

Hockey is much loved in Wasilla, and Ms. Palin, whose son was a star player, wanted to build an indoor rink, with a track, basketball courts and soccer field. In the late 1990s, the city sought a 145-acre parcel owned by the Nature Conservancy, which wanted to sell the land to buy more environmentally sensitive property elsewhere. City officials negotiated a price of $126,000. Months passed without the city’s securing a signed purchase agreement, according to the city’s attorney, Tom Klinkner of Birch, Horton, Bittner & Cherot.

In another outrageous and brazen attempt to smear, personally attack and try to embarrass an Alaskan citizen who dared to file an ethics complaint against Sarah “hold-me-accountable-and-elect-me-governor-because-my-administration-will-be-open-and transparent” Palin, Palin’s personal attorney, Van Flien, released a smarmy statement to the press, wherein he characterized the latest complaint with the same old self-serving “frivilous” label, but made absolutely no attempt to provide any proof to back up his “frivolous” claim (like a statement from Palin herself). Instead he personally attacked the Alaskan citizen who filed the latest complaint.

The obvious point of Van Flien’s statement was to not only attack and harass the messenger, but to try and intimidate anyone else who might be considering filing an ethics complaint.

Surprising that Van Flien has time to write more sleazy, bullying crap. Everyone is still waiting for him to make good on his bullying threat from last week to sue Shannyn Moore. She called his bluff, and he backed down, proving to the world that he has no balls.

Typical bullying coward, just like his client, Sarah Palin.

Here is the link to the news story with Van Flien’s completely inappropriate statement:

If memory serves… doesn’t the AK rule go that if a citizen wishes to declare that she/he will be filling an ethics complaint, that they can, in fact, publicy announce said intent and describe said action immediately prior to its actual filling? I remember reading that here quite a while ago. If VanFleece persists in this interpretation as he has written, won’t someone (preferably another lawyer) call him out and correct him on said written opinion? And can’t that citizen now file any sort of defamation of character against Von Fleabag because of what he wrote or even implied? The intentional graying of that process by Vince Flea certainly can’t be helping his credibility, not to mention the haircut! Looks too much like a skinhead in a suit! But I digress. It may be interesting to know more about this lawyers own personal history and past life. Top of his class? Ranked 349 out of 350? Three attempts to pass the bar? Criminal law or torts? Won-loss-settlement record? Do we know more about him? Is he sinless and able to cast that first stone? Is this his fifteen minutes? Doth his wheel squeaketh too much?

    Just sayin’
    ———————-
Good point, and it’s something that has been rattling around in my head for weeks. I don’t know if I have fully formulated my thoughts, so excuse me in advance for this is rough draft.

It seems the media is missing the bigger point about Sarah blasting citizens for filing “frivolous ethics complaints”…and then quitting over them.

Palin claims to be “for the people” because she is “one of them”…”just a hockey mom”. However, when citizens use the system and express their rights to question their leaders, it seems that Palin feels that “the people” should NOT have a voice.

She has claimed that the complaints burden her, and her administration has actually mocked people (using their names) for the “frivolous” complaints.

In essence, it seems Sarah feels that she should NOT be questioned by “the people”. Her remark that, the “Dept of Law in the White House would just throw these out” is very telling.

The fact that we can hold our leaders accountable is one of the core freedoms in this Country. It seems that Sarah believes that the Dept of Law in the White House does and should take away the rights of citizens to question their leaders…..by just throwing out their complaints. Doesn’t that speak volumes?

What does this say about Sarah? A lot, actually. It seems that Sarah believes she is “for the people”, yet she doesn’t want to be held accountable “by the people”. Rather, she publicly blasts ordinary citizens for expressing their “freedoms” to hold their leaders accountable.

Palin’s appeal is a populist one. Yet, she seems to be saying that the people shouldn’t have a voice. It’s the hypocricy of Palin.

Palin’s attorney is a punk because of the positions he takes and arguments he makes. How he looks and his personal history stuff are irrelevant. Obviously, they can’t win an argument using facts. We can. So, because they can’t win on the facts their way of “arguing” is to avoid the facts and change the subject by attacking the messenger. They make it personal. It would be nice if we WERE all above that, but in reading what’s written on posts here on a daily basis, (since last August for me…) are we not doing that very thing? Do we not belittle and make fun and question genealogy? Inasmuch as Mr. Van Flein is concerned, ‘it goes to establishing character, your honor’. And qualifications. He is, after all, in a position of importance and noteriety, and as such subject to scrutiny. We do it on a daily basis here and in our own personal lives. I am not without sin. We delve into Saracuda et als personal history in an attempt to get some juicy dirt about them. We act surprised, amazed, even disgusted, and yet we press on. An unfortunate nature of our society. You even called him a ‘punk’. Don’t get me wrong here. I see and appreciate your point. I agree to disagree in the assumption that we remain above all that. Reference the book titles, PhotoShop work, and heartfelt comments of utter disgust at the entire situation. We may poke lightly, but we poke nonetheless. We make it personal as well. Myself included! Does that make us any better? Or is it that we see it for what it is, and them for who they are… and will not be drawn down to their level… a level where they BELIEVE what they say and do. We’ve gone down that proverbial ladder, just never all the way to the bottom rung.

This, I feel, IMHO, is the BEST part of this site… the opportunity to exchange points of view… to listen to one another, not necessarilly to agree, but allow many varied opinions to be expressed and pondered, whole or in part. Thanks for your reply!

My husband is a champion skeptic. His favorite publication is “The Skeptical Inquirer.” So, when he heard the news of $arah Palin’s resignation last week, his Skeptical Radar signaled that something wasn’t right.

At first glance, it’s easy to assume it’s the money, and that was part of it. Ethics violations? She’s been shaking them off like a horse brushes away troublesome flies. He’s sure that something bigger is brewing, more likely at the federal level. For example, just looking those beautiful windows in the beautiful lake home, he reasons that there had better be a beautiful canceled check from the Palin bank account which paid for them. And, the bookkeeping over at the supplier’s office should match.

My husband, the skeptic’s reasoning is that she cut the deal now, while she still had the power to cut the deal. Once any possible charges would be aired publicly, there are no bargaining chips left. But, just the threat of staying in office while fending off more time and money consumming charges (true or false) vs. “I’ll leave right now and we won’t have to worry it anymore”– well, you can see how his reasoning goes.

Besides, her staying in office while fighting off charges (true or false) does not make Alaska look good. Look at the examples of people who remained in office despite their scandal: Larry Craig, David Vitter, Gov.Sanford, Sen.Ensign, all have become punchlines to late night jokes. So, he reasoned, she negotiated her way out while she still had the power to do so. It’s not that she has already cost the state alot of money; it’s the threat that if she stays, she’s going to cost them big time.

I vehemently disagree with you about the personal history, especially attorneys, personnel board members etc. Background checks can speak mightily to the individuals’ ethics, integrity, work history, grasp of facts etc. For instance, have any complaints been filed with the Bar against Van Flein in the past. Where there is smoke? The personnel members should be backgrounded to see if any of them have benefited via Palin in more ways than their jobs. A Story: Sarah Palin and the Playground Bullies

On her first day of school, mother plopped a tin foil hat on Sarah’s head, and wagging her finger, warned the little girl to look out for bullies.

When Sarah arrived for the first day of school, the teacher partnered her with a playmate. Sarah smiled, knowing they’d be friends, because Johnny wore a matching tin foil hat.

At recess Sarah met scores of other children and quickly made friends with Rush, Billo, Anne and Glenn, who wore tin foil hats even bigger than her own!

The next day, Sarah met even more children, but these children weren’t so nice. Unlike the tin foil children, the blogger children liked to laugh at Sarah, especially when they caught her telling lies. And that happened a lot.

Though the bloggers made her mad, the helmeted hoodlums were always there to defend her.

Most days Sarah had fun with her friends making up stories and lies about the bloggers, and those other nasty kids –the media crew, who were constantly trying to expose her in the school newspaper.

When media girl, Katie, wrote about how she could not read, Sarah was livid. When Keith made fun of her grammar she cried. When Diva crayoned on one of her pictures she screamed to the teacher “desecration!”

Sarah’s mother warned her to stay away from the media and blogger kids. Yet, even though she had many friends, she felt the need to get back at them.

She told the teacher about them, but the teacher laughed and said, “Just go play, Sarah.” She told the principle about them, but he just said, “Ignore them.”
She told her mom about them, but she just said, “Don’t explain yourself dear. Your friends don’t need it and your enemies won’t believe you anyway.”

Sarah stomped her feet. She heald her breath. She screamed, and hollared, and banged her fists. She killed a turkey. And then a moose. But still the media and blogger kids laughed all the harder.

Unable to ignore the laughter, she left her tin foil friends behind and quit school to return home in tears to the protection of her mother where she pretended to be a home schooler.

    The End.

    2. The original commentator only spoke about Palin’s attorney’s “own personal history and past life.” You raised a completely different topic, that: “The personnel members should be backgrounded to see if any of them have benefited via Palin in more ways than their jobs.” I agree. That is a legitimate basis for an inquiry — looking for motives to be dishonest (for example, related to a Palin), or looking for proof of graft, favoritism, accepting a bribe, etc. But, trying to dig up personal “dirt” on the personnel members just to try and smear and embarrass them would not be appropriate.

Your son’s situation makes sense. Sarah’s educational background, not so much.

After I posted, I had a chance to read Donald Craig Mitchell’s excellent opinion piece posted at alaskadispatch dot com. In attempting to explain much of Sarah’s bizarre behavior, he may have put his finger on the reason for five differenct colleges:

“And when she’s in over her head, Sarah’s instinct is to find a face-saving way to make her way to the nearest door marked “Exit.”

This could be the explanation for Sarah’s college experience. Or, there could be more to the story.

I’m a new reader here at Mudflats, so don’t know if something like this was posted before, but I had looked this up a couple of years ago when I was dealing with a person here who had some really odd behavior – and boy, do I recognize a lot of the same things in Scarah as I did then.

    Profile of the Sociopath
This summarizes some of the common features of descriptions of the behavior of sociopaths.

    *Glibness and Superficial Charm

    *Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.

    *Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as “their right.”

    *Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.

*Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.

    *Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises.

    *Incapacity for Love

    *Need for Stimulation
Living on the edge. Verbal outbursts and physical punishments are normal. Promiscuity and gambling are common.

    *Callousness/Lack of Empathy
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others’ feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.

    *Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature
Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others.

    *Early Behavior Problems/Juvenile Delinquency
Usually has a history of behavioral and academic difficulties, yet “gets by” by conning others. Problems in making and keeping friends; aberrant behaviors such as cruelty to people or animals, stealing, etc.

    *Irresponsibility/Unreliability
Not concerned about wrecking others’ lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.

    *Promiscuous Sexual Behavior/Infidelity
Promiscuity, child sexual abuse, rape and sexual acting out of all sorts.

*Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic Lifestyle
Tends to move around a lot or makes all encompassing promises for the future, poor work ethic but exploits others effectively.

    *Criminal or Entrepreneurial Versatility
Changes their image as needed to avoid prosecution. Changes life story readily.

“I’ll leave right now and we won’t have to worry it anymore”– well, you can see how his reasoning goes….”

I tend to think along the same lines as your husband, Mae.

But I think it’s worse than we imagine. I believe an “insider” with knowledge of whatever is about to go down probably gave her a July 31st deadline date that she’s be indicted/arrested/served with some kind of warrant by a federal agency, the identity of which we ordinary folks aren’t yet aware of.

If the end of July was her date of denouement, that would explain the panic on the 4th, and the 3 weeks to fly around the state, look busy, and spend lots of the state’s money talking to her in-state base.

This falderol about Schmidt and Campbell vieing for the Lt. Governor position, and who should really have the right to name the Lt. Governor — the outgoing quitter Gov or the incoming new Gov? — I think that’s all a smokescreen to distract a lot of shredding, and a behind the scenes set-up for her to “advise” or “consult” Sean Parnell with some kind of lucrative retainer for her, and lastly she probably is making sure her visa is up to date, so that she’s not only out of Alaska but out of country when the feds come for her.

Actually not so bad. Points to some of Sarah’s behaviors such as not listening to advisors (e.g. John Coale, who said to just ignore the stories).

Premise is that Sarah’s lightweight resume and wild-west style might just be what America wants/needs right now or in the near future. But it is not. IMO, convincing.

Also, SP and Meg’s ‘hallucinated’ (my opinion) connection between the ethics comlaints and the “Obama White House” is not substantiated at all. The authors print the Pete Rouse-Senator Obama-Kim Elton-Preisdent Obama connetion, but don’t in any way explain how that has anything to do with any of the ethics complaits, except tangenitally [sp?] re: Kim Elton was in a leadership position in the AK senate during Troopergate.

My letter to Time will probably be along the lines of that it’s not her lightweight resume that bothers some of us, it’s her behavior and how she reacts to events – too ‘touchy’ to be in any important position, and demonstrates over and over and over (as they document in their very article) that she simply seems to refuse taking advice, even when that advice is sound.

Someone mentioned a while back something about getting “juicy dirt” on Palin. I thought about that, how one would use casting the first stone story. That story wasn’t about the person being outed; but rather the harsh sentence of death being imposed. When did truth become “juicy dirt?”

During the campaign, I began searching the internet to find out who Palin was, her principles, not just the title she was holding. What I found was distasteful. Then I watched the old press conference and I knew the story she told was a lie. So I searched the internet some more and found photo evidence that substantiated my opinion, a confirmation if you will. Funny how Palin has never attacked the authenticity of all the photo evidence that shows no baby was born while governor before the campaign. Those photos are just a google away, just like those Alaskan bloggers, who I proudly call my internet friends.

If a job applicant said they were qualified because they had a family, 5 kids, one in tow with DS, would that make that person qualified for the position they were applying for? That is what happened. Palin’s work achievements were lacking; thus her motherhood and reproductive achievements were pushed into the forefront of the 2008 presidential campaign in an attempt to sway votes, my vote. So when did the subject become taboo? When it stopped serving her purpose? In my opinion, Palin used her family and family matters as distractions from her lack of leadership skills.

And the fiasco she started about that picture was nothing but a ploy. It should be obvious that it was who it was, Burke; not a peek about Letterman in that same picture a week or so before. I would bet it was really all about Burke’s red t-shirt; distraction is her game.

When good folks exercised their civic duty in an effort to hold Palin accountable as Palin had said, they were dissed by Palin and her agents in an effort to take away the power of the people. Why are folks chastised for their subjective opinions and for using the system to assert their rights? I would consider less than 20 folks out of more than 600,000 constituents nothing but a drop in the bucket. All complaints have merit; some more than others. But I bet not one accused Palin of being an alien; that would be frivolous, of course. So when did holding her accountable become wrong?

I am hoping the ACLU addresses that $25,000 the State of Alaska gave to a Juneau church that had Palin’s name all over it. For that after school, in-home 7-week study program on being a spiritual warfare warrior.

So, I guess what I am trying to say is Palin can only blame herself for playing in the dirt!!

Coonrod, Metcalfe, and ACLU of Alaska v. State of Alaska
Issue: property tax exemption for religious school teacher housing
    Case Number: 3AN-06-8866CI (Superior Court)
    Status: active litigation
Summary: In 2006, the Alaska legislature passed a law that exempts from taxation any property owned by religious organizations and used as housing for teachers in religious or parochial schools. Both the U. S. and Alaska Constitutions bar the government from showing favoritism for one religion over another, or for religion generally over non-religion. The ACLU of Alaska believes that this legislation has the impermissible effect of carving out special privileges for religion that do not apply to non-religious interests. The ACLU of Alaska filed a lawsuit on behalf of two Anchorage residents to challenge the law and have it declared unconstitutional. Oral argument was on February 28, 2008.

Prayer at Wasilla Planning Commission Meetings
Issue: Sectarian Prayer at Wasilla Planning Commission Meetings
Status: settled; Planning Commission agreed to cease sectarian prayer at meetings
Summary: In 2005, the Wasilla Planning Commission was opening its monthly public meetings with sectarian prayer in violation of the strict constitutional prohibition of such activity. After receiving numerous complaints from residents of Wasilla, the ACLU of Alaska sent a letter to the City Attorney requesting that the Planning Commission immediately cease this practice. The City Attorney agreed with the ACLU of Alaska’s analysis and advised the Commission on the unconstitutional nature of including sectarian prayer at public meetings. The City Attorney confirmed to the ACLU of Alaska that the Commission agreed to follow his advice.

An attempt to malign Butler by suggesting these are the types of clients Butler represents? I am not a lawyer, but it is it usual to vilify a person in the press before evidence has been presented?

I hope she took money for appearances and I hope it was from John Ziegler. Now that would be poetic justice.
