Slogging through the usual fare of “Sarah Palin is a great lady and Obama’s a Communitst Fascist…Islamist……no good…(trails off into incomprehension) in the spam queue, I came across the following.  Usually, I fling trolls mercilessly, grabbing them by their little scaly ankles, and doing the discus throw, watching them get smaller and smaller until they descend with a satisflying splat…right in the mudflats.

But this time, the poor little fellow seemed a bit confused, so I just turned him around and scooted him out the door.

“If anyone would like to make a donation to Sarah PAC you may do so through a link on my site which praises Palin on a regular basis.”

I didn’t actually include the link, because I figure if someone is bent on donating to SarahPAC, they can find it all on thier own.

Money line from Frank Rich’s Op-Ed in the NYT for Sunday:

Were Palin actually to secure the 2012 nomination, the result would be a fiasco for the G.O.P. akin to Goldwater 1964, as the most relentless conservative Palin critic, David Frum, has predicted.

    And it gets worse.

In reference to comments made on Shanny’s show –

Special Session — forgive me if I’m being naive or uninformed on AK constitutional/legislative requirements ….. but why couldn’t they have a special session by *teleconference* ?

Yes, that costs more than a few bucks too, but seems it would be much more economical. Anyone know if that’s constitutionally possible?

At least those legislators vacationing in Hawaii or out fishing would still be able to participate.

Even Gregory’s attempt with McCain this morning showed his inexperience even though he has been in the political reporting area for some time.

It is the one thing that boggles my mind as to your political system. It is a disservice to the citizens of the country that it is an ad nauseam political campaign. Yes the Senate and Congress have various committees and they work to pass laws and programs at some points within the time the sessions sit. But they are so entrenched in campaign mode, the interest to work on behalf of the citizens is secondary.

Our election system here is not the best either, but our campaign for Prime Minister is usually 8 weeks. They can be as little as 36 days by law. Spending by parties is strictly limited by the Elections Act. No primaries.

Not a one of them had the gumption to do what was right by the AK people. They are serving their own self-interest.

Of course, this happens everywhere in the U.S. and like genuine, meaningful, health-care reform, I don’t see a snowball’s chance in heck that we will have any sort of meaningful election reform in my lifetime.

  49. 50
    pacos_galNo Gravatar says:

This is why we need some sort of campaign finance reform. Politicians are constantly campaigning and trying to raise funds for the Next campaign. Nothing gets done. Look how the Republicans in Congress voted no except for a couple on the..what was it? the budget? stimulus funds? It doesn’t matter, everyone votes with the party, if you don’t, you know you won’t be getting as much funding later on, or help on something you want done. (Gingrich leadership lives on)

Canada has limits on just about everything when it comes to campaigning. Time alloted for broadcasting, amount that can be donated by individuals, by the candidates themselves. The amount of time that you can campaign, there is a start date and an end date. It seems to work out alright and I like the limits. We aren’t swamped by crap all the time and can watch the fun of arguments on the floor and officials who say dumb things with a microphone near by try to back peddle on those dumb things. Fun all around.

I honestly don’t know how american politicians get anything done, when they are only concerned about elections 2 or 4 years down the road. There is constant fundraising, and perhaps if that were to change other things would too.

When I think of all the Americans with no job..no health insurance and in many cases not able to feed their families, the idea of billions raised to run in an election is stomach turning.

Judy – I LOVE that Rolling Stone article! I read it so many times. It really does put a glaring light on the real John McCain and I’ve never looked at him the same way since.

Canadian Neighbour – Started to read the wiki but it made my head hurt. I’ve been up since 2am and actually found myself accidentally getting caught up in a Mudflats live chat from 3 till 6:30 this morning. I’m going to save that reading until after a good nap!

Both adult children are here and are being rambunctious. I’m trying to talk them into going to the downtown “Taste of Buffalo” food festival so I can have a quiet day of working on the new Palin site. (by the by , thanks to the folks that offered to be beta viewers! The feedback is really helpful )

Oh! Funny story that Mudflats and Palin brought about :

I’ve been working on Palin stuff and reading the blogs tooo much lately and have been ignoring the work I need to keep up with on my own newspaper. So, I put Palin aside the other day and decided to catch up with clients, do some cold calling, update the site, etc.

Well, just because I was physically doing the work didn’t mean that my mind wasn’t still on Palin and whatnot. At one point I was on the phone with someone who decided he was interested in possibly advertising on the news site. He took me by surprise so I had to shift into sales person gear. I start giving him pricing, site stats, etc while also remaining laid back so as not to push him too soon. We’re winding up the conversation and I’ve got a billion things running through my head at once which included the question of , “what’s the best way to end the chat? should i say goodbye casually? be more professional? mention the sale one more time? ,etc” I was also running on next to no sleep for days.

Well, comes the moment to say either, “ok have a great day” , or “i’ll follow up with you soon”, or any of a dozen appropriate closing remarks. But instead what comes out was (and for the love of all that is good and holy I don’t have the first clue how it happened) and I quote:

“Ok! Dinky Doo!” and i hung up.

I sat there for a long, long, long moment hearing it like a trailing off echo in my head. My daughter is quiet as well and then says, with the oddest expression, “uh mom? why did you just say …… dinky doo to a client ? ”

Then we both split a gut laughing and I gave up work for the rest of the day.

What the F is she saying to them, that they go, oh now I get it? Why does is make sense to them after she explains it? why doesn’t it make sense when she explains it to us through the media? GAH Did she threaten him with saying something about him? wouldn’t surprise me.

I also thought Andrea M did a pretty good job, but would have loved more nitty gritty details. I did think the joke about carrying waders in her purse was good. Palin, such a whack job.

That is too funny! Thanks for sharing. The blogs (interesting ones) can really mess with ones mind. During the campaign, I was involved in the BO website, and filling my bath water at the same time. Needless to say, the water ended up overflowing – almost into the hallway. According to the AK Dept. of Labor and Workforce Development, over 16% of the population is Native American. Black and hispanic proportions are indeed small, but due to the Native population the white proportion is less than the national average. Generally speaking, Alaska Natives have strong ties to the land and have contributed very significantly to conservation and environmental protection.”

Before the Rolling Stone article on McCain, I read an article by a journalist in Arizona who had been following McCain’s career from the day he moved to Arizona to enter politics. The bottom line is that without Cindy’s vast fortune and political contacts, John McCain would have always been a has-been former military pilot who never succeeded at anything. This author also explained the myth of McCain’s being a “maverick” to a “T”. Bottom line is that he talked the talk but never walked the walk.

President Obama is not living up to my expectations, but I still thank god every day that McCain didn’t win. I shudder to think where this country would be with McCain as President.

As a matter of fact, I did! My daughter and discussed it and agreed that he hung up the phone with a puzzled look and wondered, “Did she just say ** dinky doo ** ? ” and would’ve come to a conclusion of , “of COURSE she didn’t cuz that would be insane”. So, when I followed up I just launched right into, “hey John, How’re ya? Good talkin’ the other day” , and so all was well.

It has become the new “goodbye” phrase for me and Marlee. She just left with my son to go to the food festival and called out, “ok mom – DINKY doo !”

Canadian Neighbour – I know – Skinamarinky always goes thru my head too.

I mentioned to someone here that a few years ago I had a freakish blood pressure spike due to this “healthy” tea that I had been drinking by the gallons during a house move. It had some herb in it that , for some people, will cause blood pressure to rise. Well mine climbed to an insane 205 over 185 and I ended up in the ER. Ended up having a transitory stroke. Scary but all turned out well and there were no complications EXCEPT that , to this day, I have brain misfirings occasionally.

The first time it was noticed was a month or so after the ER. I was walking to the kitchen and was asking my daughter if she’d like something to eat and was rattling off options. It went something like, ” do you want a sandwich ? juice? what about a potassium stick? ”

I stopped, realizing that something wasn’t quite right but not entirely understanding what it was. Marlee sat quietly, just looking, waiting for some sort of explanation. A few moments later she quietly queries, “ummm….. potassium stick?”

I was looking at the bananas on the counter and somehow my brain used that phrase instead of the word banana. I’m thinking that the brain being in overdrive brought on one of those misfirings and it just grabbed some sounds that happened to be close by to use instead of a standard, “goodbye”.

Other instances have been “cold mover” for snow blower and “little talk” for whisper. Being as I don’t have any other worrisome things to deal with I look at this one as rather fascinating. Besides that, it’s just plain good for a hearty guffaw!

“Andrew, I watch you at these debates with no notes, no papers and yet when asked questions you spout off facts, figures and policies and I’m amazed. But then I look out into the audience and I ask myself, does any of this really matter.”‘

    http://www.andrewhalcro.com/retro_blog_time_to_take_a_stand
    ________
This is the real SP. She has shrewd, primal instincts about her base; they, and a whole lot of other Americans, don’t give a rat’s behind about facts and figures because they, like SP, either cannot comprehend them, or they are too intellectually lazy to try. They are easily led around by their noses by politicians like SP because she makes them feel as if she truly understands them and their needs. And she does; they just want someone to mouth the easily understood platitudes to which they relate.

I think SP knows that she has no future in politics as Gov, POTUS, etc. However, she has a huge future as one to rally the troops for other politicians of her ilk. I believe that is her higher calling. I really, really, believe that she wants to ensure that her religious values are foisted on the rest of us around the world through gaining control of government power.

Along the way, she can and will enrich herself, just like many other high-profile evangelicals. Her Achilles’ heel is her narcissism, and it may well be her undoing, similar to Jim Bakker. It is also the reason she resigned, I think. She needs and feeds on the crowd adulation, and when the press, the blogs, and the ethics complaints filers started pointing out that the empress had no clothes, she couldn’t take it.

I think a huge I.R.S. problem is in her future because she believes she is invincible. JMHO.

Oh, it’s even worse than that. She uses children (especially her own) and soldiers as human shields for her positions – if you are against her position, QED (in her logic) you must be against kids (or our troops). Is anyone else discouraged that the system in place that citizens use to hold politicians that have power over them seems to be broken? It is a joke, useless, Sarah Palin has made a mockery of this tool and shown the people they have no power whatsoever except at the polls. I think I now can honestly say, I despise Sarah Palin.

I also think the very people who have the responsibility to uphold the ethics laws have failed miserably at their job and they should be ashamed of themselves. They have done a disservice to the people they are supposed to protect and work for. Finding a loophole in order to get Scarah off every ethics complaint is wrong. Where is the fairness and balance. The merit of each one of those complaints is totally ignored.

I for one feel powerless and defeated. Is that what our politicians want people to feel and think? They allow Palin to make a mockery of something that is supposed to work. Well in Alaska the ethics complaint system is defunct, it is broken, politicians have stood by and allowed it to be a joke.

I read an article a year or two ago about this group on C Street. It was written by a journalist who infiltrated The Family as sort of an acolyte. I don’t know if it is the same guy who is writing the book, but the article (which I cannot find) made my hair stand on end. He said that The Family have connections with politicians throughout the world, and visiting dignitaries regularly come to the house on C Street.

What really gets my gall is that even Obama is bowing to them by attending their prayer breakfast. Clinton did, too, but Hillary refused to go. Good for her!

A Salen’s hotdog on a charcoal grill is one of the joys of summer. I only indulge once or twice during the season but man…it’s something else. Schwabel’s beef on weck is amazing. I don’t think weck rolls are known much outside of the area but it’s a large oven baked roll that is sprinkled with kosher salt and caraway seeds towards the end of the baking which creates a very salty, savory, crunchy crust but the inside is very soft and fluffy. You then slice these and pile them high with tender roast beef that’s done to a medium, sliced thin and dipped in au jus. Add to this horseradish that is made fresh at the market and you’ve got something amazing.

And Suchanut, I would gladly send you some Weber’s! Do you like the plain unnatural yellow or the garlic horseradish? Seriously, send me your address on PM or by the email that I posted earlier and I’ll send some. I don’t think the Sahlen’s would make the trip very well, nor would the fabulous pierogis from Broadway Market but I’d happily send Weber’s and a pack of Texas Hot Dog sauce for you.

Life has become that of instant gratification. One reason due to credit cards. You don’t have to save up for anything anymore. You want it – you buy it. Doesn’t mean you actually need it. Therefore our timeframe of waiting for anything now doesn’t exist.

Not something that parents teach kids anymore as you can see and hear everytime you go shopping — “I want this Mommy” “I want” “I want” and on the first response of “No”, the whining starts, the kicking starts and then it becomes a full-scale tantrum, wherein Mommy buys it.

Close to Christmas I’ve seen myself say to the kid, put it on your list for Santa. The mother looks at me like I have two heads but it shuts the kid up out of shock for a moment anyways and allows me time to get away from it.

But, just outside of Buffalo there are places like Medina and Niagara County wine country, the Allegheny hill and mountain area, that are breathtaking.

And, JC, it’s funny out here. You can drive 50 miles in any given direction and you’ll go through a half dozen pockets of “strictly dem” which then turns to “strictly rep”. And they’re staunch! “The longer she is in the news picking fights with David Letterman, having the father of her grandchild speak to the media, seen to have forced her daughter into reversing her position on abstinence teaching, the more tabloid/reality TV-like the family drama continues to be, the more this really hurts her across the board except in the minds of those who are already on her side. “And if she chooses to run, I think the opportunity to expand her base of support will be in attracting more people to the conservative movement, not in trying to reinvent herself as a policy wonk. By 2012, there will likely be an even larger contingent of Americans who’ve grown tired of the government asserting itself over every sector of our society. Sarah Palin may very well have the combination of core values, personal charisma, and political acumen necessary to successfully launch the next phase of the conservative movement.”

TBNTJudy, you and yellerdogg have definitely hit on a good thread here, but the latest news from Bizarro-Land is that our favorite attention magnet has stated today that she is planning on splitting off the ‘conservative’ part of the republican party as well as conservative dems to start a new movement dedicated to the things SHE believes are important to the country…..

    ——————————
THAT’S exactly what I’ve been saying! She doesn’t give a flyin’ flip about anything beyond doing her anointed duty and helping the movement to take the world for the return of Jesus. As of tomorrow morning, I will be putting the first part of the week entirely in to getting the new ” palin and the third wave ” site ready for everyone here to look at. It won’t be complete but it’ll be ready for viewing and I’ll really really need your feedback.

Lily F – there’s a video clip on You Tube by a preacher named John Piper who references Esther in one of his sermons and indirectly (tho blatantly) references Palin at the same time and calls out, “Where are our Esthers?? Where are the women who are willing to say , “If I perish, I perish”. He then mentions someone currently in office who won a beauty contest and goes on to say that God often makes the chosen ones beautiful in order to win the masses for Him. And, to be honest, this is one of the guys on that side that doesn’t freak me out. He seems like a good man who believes what he’s doing and doesn’t have an agenda. However, the things he’s saying is very telling and disturbing because it means it’s infiltrated widely and is being talked about often.

I believe Sarah is getting regular counsel from the higher ups in this movement and is being guided as to what to do. Another theory of mine is that she was given a push from that side to go ahead and trust God to protect you – Just quit! You’ve got a calling and you’ve got money coming in. Alaska will take care of itself for now. You’ve got bigger things to do and you can help Alaska by accomplishing those things for Jesus. Go ahead Sarah/Esther – Trust us to guide you and trust God to let us know how to guide you. Quit and you’ll be helping to save the world.”

Yep. That’s what I think. (well… and that 10 million bucks sounds good too)

fortune cookie/twitter tidbits of quirky short and paradoxical quotes:

Something like: To climb out of darkness you must first fall into a hole.

Or maybe the art of War:
” All warfare is based on deception.”

Here are some actual fortune cookie quotes she may have read-
A new wardrobe brings great joy and change in your life.
An alien of some sort will be appearing to you shortly!
The possibility of a career change is near.
You will be called to fill a position of high honor and responsibility.
Let your heart make your decisions – it does not get as confused as your head.
You will always get what you want through your charm and personality.
Your secret desire to completely change your life will manifest.
Keep your plans secret for now.

And fortune cookies she did not read:
Great works are performed not by strength, but by perseverance.
You always know the right times to be assertive or to simply wait.
Compassion will cure more then condemnation.
    Face facts with dignity.
Excuses are easy to manufacture, and hard to sell.
You will be selected for a promotion because of your accomplishments.

I have no doubt that Sarah got the Esther reference from her religious group, in the same way that Gov.Sanford identifies with the Biblical King David. Sarah probably identifies with Esther because she was chosen by King Ahasuerus from all of the beauties in the kingdom (Persia, today’s Iran). So, Esther became queen by winning a beauty contest!

The other reason that Sarah may identify with Queen Esther is because Esther was involved in “Palace Politics.” Esther overheard a plot to kill Mordechai, her cousin. The culprit was Haman, the evil prime minister. On her word, the King saved Mordechai (and also the Jews when Esther revealed her true identity). I think that Sarah likes to think that she would be powerful enough to have the ear of a king and be able to influence major political events in the kingdom (that is, if she can’t be the President/King herself).

Enter now Sarah Palin with very encouraging comments that lead one to believe that she is indeed planning to do what she must: build an independent conservative movement and take this nation back from the liberals which now control both parties. Thanks liberals, for provoking Sarah into the national scene while vetting that family at the same time.

One thing I will say, the Washington Times with their headline for this exclusive interview reveal an anti-Palin stance. She is, don’t doubt, a threat to every existing political status quo. It occurs to me that we mudpuppies can help one another in our respective states by sharing information we come across in our travels in cyberspace. I have relatives and contacts in Texas who need info, Buffalogal needs Dominionist info and there must be others of us who want to keep ahead of the curve on lots of issues and people. I think we ought to get organized and connected over at the forum and get busy.

Lily f, that quote from SP, “if I die, I die. So be it.” has been running around in my head all weekend. One of the links I followed from here a few days ago was to an article and video about some raspy-voiced nutjob stirring up the youth troops. On the back of one of their t-shirts was that saying. It has something to do with martyrdom…being willing to die for the cause. Very frightening. That being said, I don’t believe for one minute that Sarah is willing to die literally for the cause; I don’t think she has evolved past her narcissism enough to do that.

UKLady, you, BuffaloGal, and others here have pointed out Hillary’s association with the Family. Somewhere in the last few days I read that she did not attend the prayer thing after Bill was inaugurated. If so, then I guess she changed her mind…politics over conviction, I presume. I am so disappointed.

The good news: The Family’s time might be up. Interesting how Palin’s resignation and the Sanford/Ensign(?) scandals are shining a light into the Family’s dark places. We gotta keep the pressure up.

What is it with Palin and people with names like Cole, Coale and now, perhaps, Doug Coe?

(Dang, I’m slow. I refreshed before posting and there are some 20 comments i haven’t read. )

I found the most revealing part of that article to be that, while his shipmates were still being killed by the bombs he dropped on the deck, McCain was holed up in the Ready Room worrying over his next promotion. That story was taken from his book. Can one be more narcissistic than that?

Gramian – Just did a quick google. He addressed Coe’s Annual National Prayer Breakfast in Feb. Apparently every Pres. has done that since Eisenhower. He did just get some heat for not attending the National Day of Prayer activities – definitely not Family-related.

The msnbc link dated April ’09 included Obama as attending some Coe meetings. It doesn’t seem that Obama’s policies fit the Coe ideology. Perhaps Obama attended as a young Senator to gain connections and see what it was about…same for Hillary…and, hopefully, stopped going.

Oh, those Evangelicals are so nice! Look , they’re over there in Africa helping AIDS victims.

Jodi Jacobson on January 12, 2009

“Confirming month-old rumors, a high-level source reported last night that President-Elect Obama’s transition team has asked Ambassador Mark Dybul to remain in place as Global AIDS Coordinator, despite strong opposition by treatment access, HIV prevention, and women’s rights advocates across the global HIV and AIDS community, many of whom signed letters calling for a change in PEPFAR leadership at this crucial time. While keeping Dybul on may be a stopgap measure for a new Administration dealing with huge problems across the board, it is a decision that signals we may not be getting ‘the change we need’ in global AIDS policies.”

    ————
US HIV/AIDS efforts in Africa are in part conducted by Christian fundamentalists who withhold the means of prevention in contra-scientific preference to their own abstinence-only religious beliefs. How is that not taxpayer-financed proselytizing? And how offensive is it that they are willing to sacrifice lives by withholding the preventive care we’ve paid for to push their religious beliefs onto others? And that they are doing so in all our names?

Regarding “The Family,” have you seen these articles about Hillary Clinton’s involvement with the group? I haven’t read all the comments yet so apologies if this has already been covered.

One is a 2008 piece by Barbara Ehrenreich in The Nation; the other is a 2007 Mother Jones article co-written by Jeff Sharlet, who joined The Family’s home for young men in 2002 and wrote about it.

    http://tiny.cc/FamilyMJ

    http://tiny.cc/FamilyNation

While I was never a Clinton fan (though I was not a hater, either—then or now), I was shocked when I read these pieces during the presidential primary last year.

It’s puzzling to me that this quasi-religious organization, not to mention the Clinton affiliation, never got more national attention. Perhaps there will be more discussion now about this “Family” group? I hope so.

While I’m by no means against religion per se, I really really value the separation of church and state.

The U.S. National Prayer Breakfast is sponsored by ‘The Family’, the same group that operates C – Street. Although RM has reported on it’s influence regarding American politics, it is a global movement that has tentacles in many governments, including Lithuania.
