Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Open Thread – Heading Home

Well, by the time this posts, I will have been sans internet or Blackberry for 48 hours.  We can presume I survived, and am on my way back to civilization.

And since I’m actually writing this on Friday afternoon, and scheduling it to robo-post on Sunday evening, let’s just assume I had a rollicking good time, and took lots of great pictures to share with you over the coming week.

It’s safe to say that several times at least, I’ve been wondering what’s going on back here in the real world.  Well….by now I’ve probably convinced myself that the real world is the one I’ve been in for the past two days.  So, I’ve been wondering, then what’s been going on here in the sur-real world.

Did Palin un-quit?  Is there some new scandal?  Did everyone just lay low this weekend?  Any new Twidiocy from Palin’s Twitter account?  I’ll be having fun catching up with all the news, and reading all the links that are no doubt in the threads.

See you soon!

    “Did Palin un-quit?”

Not to turn anyone grey or take a few years off your life YET the fact Palin is flagrantly being a btch & doing interviews in the GOV’s office again I say press her a s s to the wall over QUITTING with a LIE & make her stay through August until the Legislature returns.

Hold her accountable for what she has pulled the past week by making her stay with the JOY and SATISFACTION she is in mental/physical meltdown with the hope that her breakdown might be caught on tape by a tourist visiting the capitol. Or else let her QUIT again with the EXPOSURE she is costing Alaska $100,000 a day & let angry Meg spin it.

    THANK YOU much !

I personally think Levi should not go on Celtic’s Show (I didn’t even know she had one, where can I watch/listen)?

Celtic has personal issues with Palin & although I totally understand Diva’s frustration at the way Palin has been a creep to her there has been some snarky comments at Palin on Twitter/ADN/Blogs etc… that IMO has lessened, just a little bit, Celtic’s talking points by not taking the high road & performing her complaints with maturity.

I have supported & do support Celtic. I really do understand the stress she has had to endure and admire her tenacity, accomplishments well earned. I respect her greatly.

…Levi though is in a very sensitive relationship with Palin’s involving his son. He absolutely needs to stay away from “Blogosphere” attacks and definitely stay away from Alaska personal tiffs with Palin. Levi is in it for life with his son, he cannot be taking the risk of chatting up what he knows and losing his leverage to secure his boys future.

Isabella: As long as Levi is bright enough to have an attorney hammer out a custody arrangement with BRISTOL (not Sarah), besides breaking the law or being deemed unfit, he can say whatever he wants.

Bristol is not more powerful than a judge. She can’t deny him a court ordered situation. If Sarah thinks she can do this FOR Bristol, then SP is dumber than I thought. No judge in their right mind would allow a grandmother to take over like that.

Nope… all Levi needs is a good attorney and court order. He can say whatever he knows to be true to anyone who will listen and it can’t nullify his parental rights.

I just hope Levi doesn’t bend to pressure from the Palins and does what is RIGHT for him and the baby. He really seems to be dragging his feet on the whole custody demand thing, so who knows what his intentions are????

Sure he can say anything he wants but that would not be bright of him to do.

Attorney will be useful to secure his rights, he though is responsible for maintaining a relationship with the boys mother and unfortunately he screwed the wrong girl cause her mother is a wildcat & regardless of right/wrong and unfair Palin is part of the equation.

I do not think he should nor does he seem to be bending to Palin’s will YET to go on Celtic’s show or any other blog type who has a personal riff with Palin is stupid and has no benefit for him.

The boy is only 18 with a baby son to consider. A year from now none of us will be concerned about Palin daily (Hopefully) but Levi will and for the rest of his life after that. Levi owes his son first loyalty and duty it would be wise of him to stay mainstream keeping his appearances with established national medias keeping the pressure on Palin to get what he can from the situation.

Going to Celtic will do absolutely nothing for him and to go to put a “Feather in Our Caps” is not in his best interest.

Remember recently when the North Koreans were setting off some rather large but inept nuclear skyrockets?

The South Koreans merely shrugged and said it was only Kim Jong-Il’s way of reminding North Koreans of his power – prior to handing down the leadership to his son.

President Obama criticized North Korea and established sanctions. $arah Palin shrieked condemnation of President Obama and commenced wearing fatigues with her false eyelashes.

I just read that Kim Jong-Il has pancreatic cancer …..
    http://www.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idUSTRE56B24920090713

So I guess President Obama’s non-freakout response was the correct one. And $arah Palin’s response was the wrong one.

Isabella: The only relationship he “has” to maintain is that of health, education and similar decisions with Bristol. He doesn’t have to have the entire Klan loving him so he can see his son.

Going all mainstream is his choice. If he is telling what he knows to be true about the GRANDMOTHER of his child, it can NOT affect his custody or parental rights.

He’s not going to “put a feather in our caps”. My best guess is that he is going to show the Palins that he has info, isn’t afraid to expose it, and that they should pay attention to creating a 50/50 custody arrangement before they are even further embarrassed.

Sarah does NOT trump Levi when it comes to the baby. She has NO STANDING at all. She may THINK she does, she may TRY to, but legally, she does not. Levi and Bristol are the only ones that a judge is going to consider.

What Granny wants or demands is irrelevant when 2 parents are around.

I just hope he has a good attorney to get through the custody issues without caving to that woman’s incessant foot stomping.

I am not saying he should or must snuggle up to Palin and be her best bud I am saying he has to chose his battles carefully and to chose to beat her nest with Celtic (Who Palin HATES) serves no purpose whatsoever to him.

What is legal is B*S* at the end of the day.

Sure Levi could pull a Britney Spears and torment his child every single day of the boys life going to court taking on Bristol/Palin (Palin IS very much in his relationships BTW whether it is right or wrong life is unfair and Levi drew the short stick when it came to his sons grandmother) He could create tensions creating an environment of chaos for his son or he could do what he is now what IMO is strategic appearances to keep his pulse on Palin’s reality just enough to keep her at bay without challenging her.

Do you guys really honestly think it is in the best interest of Levi and Bristol to have a court decide their parenting of their child?

Maybe it is the heat but LMAO, at the thought Palin can almost completely destroy the United States of America with her gams and ignorance but she has absolutely no affect or legal leverage on an 18 year old boy who knocked up her daughter, who also too is a bee in her bonnet and not playing by her rules.

I don’t think Levi has much to worry about where Sarah is concerned. She knows that he could
cause her a lot of trouble.Anybody remember when Grandpa Heath made a snide remark about
Levi after an interview he did.
It was something about Levi making money off of the interviews and he thought he should
be using some of the money to send support money for Tripp.Levi supposedly wasn’t getting
paid for any interviews at that time.
Levis’s attorney came right back at him with the fact that he didn’t think they needed to
be talking about Levi like that and if Levi ever wanted to file a custody case they may be
    in for a suprise.
Grandpa Heath started backtracking on his statement so fast he left skid marks. Levi has
never said that he wants custody of Tripp,he just wants his visitation rights.

As long as he has Butler as his attorney and keeps his nose clean he will be just fine.
That is unless he gets setup like I think his Mother did.

@ Isabella: I believe a non-custodial parent like Levi should be able to speak honestly without it interfering with their visitation rights. If a non-custodial parent must walk on eggshells around the child’s relatives until he’s 18 years old, then something is wrong. And, yes, I think it’s in everyone’s best interest for Levi to get a court-ordered visitation schedule drawn up because casual visitation agreements don’t work when the custodial parent gets a new love interest or moves to France. Getting everything in writing while the baby is young helps avoid problems later.

Regarding $arah’s influence regarding Levi’s parental rights: Let’s all remember that it was just about this time last year that we heard about Troopergate. (There should be an anniversary celebration). In the course of reading about it, I read that the Judge in her sister’s divorce case had to admonish $arah and Todd about the awful things that they were saying about their former brother-in-law. The judge had to caution them that their statements were abusive, and would impact the children. So, do we really think that $arah can hold her tongue when it’s her grandchild instead of a niece or nephew?

I have been delighted with all of the $arah’s nicknames. There is Buttercup, as in “Suck it up, Buttercup.” And from Buttercup, all of the variations including my favorite, “Twittercup.” I am partial to $arah, as in “$how me the Money!” Scarah is too close to reality and truly does scare me. I know what you are saying and I think you are right about Free Speech & so on but the reality is Levi has to at some point be in the same room with Palin and if he is not his son is. He has to chose his battles. Going on the national shows Levi is presenting himself to options for employment while keeping a finger point pressure on Palin to watch her P’s and Q’s.

I think Levi is a not so willing participant in this Hollywood entertainment venture yet it does give him cash he would not otherwise have & he does draw an audience if he needs to fight for his son.

It repeats a lot of what it already out there, she was consumed with trivial and tabloid items like the ethics complaints and Levi/Letterman, Meg/SarahPAC have no idea of what they’re doing, discord with Alaskan legislatures after returning from the campaign trail, but a few new pieces of interesting info from it:

-the Republican Governors Assn sent an official to Alaska to hold an intervention of sorts as they saw that she was unravelling, she said thanks but no thanks to the help they suggested

-she skipped a briefing on the H1N1 flu

-Andree MacLeod was able to provide her appointment schedules from Jan 2007-May 2008 and they show that since returning from the campaign trail her days start later, end earlier and contain fewer meetings with legislators and mayors.

-the reality show proposed to her was “Northern Exposure” meets “The West Wing” (but without the obvious snark that those shows benefitted from genius writers creating intelligent dialog)

There really isn’t anything remotely as lucrative for Levi, in Alaska as there is in the wide wide world right now. I hope he is smart enough to bank or invest his earnings into property or other appreciating goods.

Palin robbed the Levi of a graduation and like any of us out of school it takes something personal to want to pursue education. For this boy from small town U.S.A. I betcha it’ll take awhile to find that motivation again. I LOVE that Levi says he doesn’t like New York or L.A. & cannot wait to get home again. My face ain’t looking any younger, now I can see love’s taken her toll on me
    She’s Gone

Think I’ll spend eternity in the city, let the carbon and monoxide choke my thoughts away
And pretty bodies help dissolve the memories, but they can never be what she was to me
    She’s Gone

    Did Palin un-quit?

Not that I know of but I wouldn’t be surprised if she goes to the Anchorage office this week, reviews the paper work on her desk, finds a letter of resignation from herself to herself. Being mavericky and always acting in the best interest of Alaska, she just might refuse to accept her own resignation.

In case she will accept her resignation, will she see the upcoming Fairbanks picnic as a transfer or power and swearing in ceremony or a coronation in which the crown is passed from one to another?

Great link to an Andrew Sullivan article in the UK Times online. As we know his blog style is quick-ish posts (which I like!) but this is a full article, and it appears to try to explain $arah to the Brits.

He wrote, “And this helps explain the broader problem with American conservatism right now. It is less a movement than an industry. From Fox News to talk radio to conservative publishing houses, it has created an alternate and lucrative media reality that is worth a fortune to those able to exploit it. Alas, these alternative media thrive on paranoia, hatred of liberal elites and growing extremist rhetoric made worse by a hermetically sealed echo chamber of true believers. Anyone criticised by the left or even by the establishment right is a martyr in this world. In America, martyrdom sells. And Palin is a product worth lots of money. ”

Levi was scheduled to be on Mike Method’s show. Celtic Diva was going to be there live blogging the show because of a special guest. Diva is a guest sometimes on Mike’s show, just like AKM is a guest sometimes on Shannyn’s show.

    MANEATER

She’ll only come out at night

Nothing is new, I’ve seen her here before
    Watching and waiting
She’s sitting with you but her eyes are on the door
So many have paid to see
What you think you’re getting for free
The woman is wild, a she-cat tamed by the purr of a Jaguar
    Money’s the matter
If you’re in it for love you ain’t gonna get too far

    Oh here she comes
Watch out boy she’ll chew you up
    Oh here she comes
    She’s a maneater
    Oh here she comes
Watch out boy she’ll chew you up
    Oh here she comes
    She’s a maneater
    I wouldn’t if I were you
I know what she can do
She’s deadly man, and she could really rip your world apart
    Mind over matter
The beauty is there but a beast is in the heart
    Oh here she comes

“She wants some of it; and she has no actual interest in governing America (even though she’d love the title of president). She referred to giving up her “title” as governor, not her “office”. In this, she is the ultimate Republican of this degenerate moment: all culture war, no policy; all identity politics, no engagement with practical answers to difficult public problems; and all hysterical opposition to Barack Obama, no actual alternatives offered.

Since even epic scandals heighten celebrity rather than diminish it, Palin’s future is secure. Her party’s? Getting bleaker by the day. ”

I heartily recommend the NY Times article, linked at #62, Callie

The paragraphs that stood out to me addressed the Fund and PAC set up by political advisor to $arah, John Coale. (He commented that the Palins seemed unprepared for the national stage.)

The Defense fund raised more than $250,000. according to its trustee. It is money that cannot be spent pending resolution of an ethics complaint that contends that the contributions are improper gifts. $arah had a disconnect between political and official duties when it came to spending money from her PAC.

As people here have speculated as to what might be causing $arah to become so thin, that issue was also addressed in the article. (Her friends say it was the stress of juggling family, official duties, fending off ethics complaints). The article reference the fact that even her hair was thinning. (Remember the comments about the hair extensions).

If you want to play psychologist, look at the symptoms described in the article, such as not being able to manage appointments, missing important meetings, lashing out at petty insults and more. Deep depression after losing the election? Medication? These issues are not in the article, so feel free to fill in your own blanks.

    Thanks for the NYTimes link.

When I read it closely, it seem that the “poor Sarah” slant was overdone. For example, “If Bristol Palin was avoiding the limelight, her estranged boyfriend was seeking it. ” This statement is absolutely absurd. Bristol’s forray into her advocacy for abstince game via Candie’s foundation isn’t exactly a bid for privacy.

Another example, this statement in the NYTimes article might be intended to elicit sympathy for Palin. -”Mr. Malek said he told Ms. Palin that “you have got to set up a mechanism so you can return calls.” ” But, IMO, it just underscores the fact that Malek believed small fixes were going to save the day. As if Malek didn’t notice the big problem – “you can’t fix stupid”.

    by Lonestar:
He called her on the road
From a lonely cold hotel room
Just to hear her say I love you one more time
But when he heard the sound
Of the kids laughing in the background
He had to wipe away a tear from his eye
A little voice came on the phone
Said “Daddy when you coming home”
He said the first thing that came to his mind.

    I’m already there
    Take a look around
I’m the sunshine in your hair
I’m the shadow on the ground
I’m the whisper in the wind
    I’m your imaginary friend
And I know I’m in your prayers
    Oh I’m already there.

She got back on the phone
Said I really miss you darling
Don’t worry about the kids they’ll be alright
Wish I was in your arms
    Lying right there beside you
But I know that I’ll be in your dreams tonight
And I’ll gently kiss your lips
    Touch you with my fingertips
So turn out the light and close your eyes.

    I’m already there
    Don’t make a sound
I’m the beat in your heart
    I’m the moonlight shining down
I’m the whisper in the wind
And I’ll be there until the end
Can you feel the love that we share
    Oh I’m already there.

We may be a thousand miles apart
But I’ll be with you wherever you are

    I’m already there
    Take a look around
I’m the sunshine in your hair
I’m the shadow on the ground
I’m the whisper in the wind
And I’ll be there until the end

While the defense fund has raised more than $250,000, according to its trustee, the money cannot be spent pending resolution of an ethics complaint that contends that the contributions could amount to improper gifts.

I have not heard of this ethic’s complaint being resolved, and if I am not mistaken even Van Flein’s lists this one as “pending”, and yet we have heard that John Coale has stated that the legal bills have been paid off from this legal fund.

Now it the money can’t be touched due to the pending complaint is resolved, then how did the legal bills get paid off? Or did the complaint get resolved and no one has been told about it yet?

If the money from the legal fund cannot be touched until the pending complaints has been resolved, then did the legal bills really get paid off? How? As for McCain, he is a worthless piece of dung. McCain, unlike Levi, has NO REASON to be afraid of Sarah. He would enhance his own reputation by just saying that yes, he MADE A MISTAKE. Second. Many of us jumped over to the live chat when one person said the magic words….”live chat. now.” It was important, and special, and unique to this blog I think as we rallied around one of our own. I think there are a couple of lesson from that moment.

    1. This really is a pretty special community. It is surprising, the strength of the connections we make as we casually chat day to day and start to recognize each other from not just our ‘names’, but our thought patterns and characters.

    2. Live chat is underused. After the ‘crisis’, most of us stayed for two hours or more, not just waiting for an update but also just enjoying the chance to chat with each other in a different way. It was, I thought, quite intense and surprisingly rewarding in the complete comfort of our comraderie.

I think we would do well to have a regular live chat, or at least invoke the ‘live chat – now!’ call from time to time. I think…I hope…it was beneficial to JHop at the time…and I know without question that it was beneficial to all who participated.

    From Turkana:

“Reagan elevated the theocrats, although he didn’t aggressively pursue their agenda. Both Bushes tried to use them, and W may even have shared their beliefs, but neither was going to sacrifice their political prospects on issues that weren’t widely popular. But Palin would, if given the chance. She’s the real deal. The extremists’ extremist, and just ignorant enough to believe what to the Noonans was just a game. Palin is an outsider. She is anti-intellectual, both in capacity and temperament. She wasn’t born to the party’s elite, and she is not their creation. And she can’t tell the difference between her party’s simplistic propaganda and actual verifiable reality. Because, to her, there is no difference!”

Rob in Ca….no problem, but to be sure of exactly what Margaret said, I just relistened to what she said, and I have to admit I was surprised….

I’m transcribing what she stated, word for word…

I spoke with John Coale who started ..founded the Legal Defense Fund for Sarah Palin in Alaska and he says that most of her private legal bills that arose as a result of the children’s travel, the per deim, troopergate, were paid for out of the Legal Defense Fund, so she really doesn’t have any real out of pocket legal defenses…uh…I mean legal expenses.

I had not picked up on this before, but in reality this is saying that all those bills, the $10,000.00 (aprox) that she had to repay the state, the taxes on her per diem, the legal bills from those as well as from Troopergate were paid for already (mostly) from the Legal Defense Fund…..

Rob, I have a hard time believing that she got that much money in her legal defense fund that she has a quarter of a million dollars left after paying everything off. EyeOnYouNo Gravatar says:

    Seagull Junker Palin,

    Thanks for the compliment.

My personal take is that despite Palin’s claims to the contrary, she doesn’t have a half a million or more in legal debts. The majority has been paid off. She did not pay them out of pocket, they were paid from donations made to her Legal Defense Fund, if you believe what John Coale says.

Now her private legal bills will include her lawyers fees for all the Troopergate mess, her lawyers fees from the situation with Travelgate, and of course the money she had to repay the state , then there is the lawyers fees and tax money she had to pay from the per diem situation as well.

All of these can easily be considered her private legal fees, but even if they aren’t …let’s just say that when they say Legal Fee’s they are talking strictly about the lawyers fees….those other bills….the taxes on the per diem she collected, the repayment of the money to the state for her kids’ travel, that money owed can be paid for out of the Legal fund based on the way and wording of how the Legal Fund was set up.

I’m suddenly very curious though, because now we have a comment from within that NY Times article that says the Fund has generated $250,000.00 from donations. AND it says that this money cannot be touched due to the pending ethic’s complaint.

For me, this brings up lots of questions:
So…is that $250,000.00 what is left over after the private bills were paid? Is that the total sum of the donations to date?? If it is the total sum they why did John Coale say that the private legal bills had been mostly paid off from the Legal Fund money if it is basically frozen until the ethic’s complaint is resolved. If that is simply what is left over after the bills were paid, then how were they able to do that if the money is supposed to be “frozen”?

Has the ethic’s complaint been resolved and we just don’t know about it yet? If that is the case then why does Van Flein in his latest press release say give a list of the ethic’s complaints and lists the disposition of each and the one regarding the Legal Fund is listed as “pending”?

Maybe someone did give her a loan to pay off the legal fees – against the fund.

I was over at the Alaska Fund Trust reading the trustee (Kristen Cole) statement about the Fund, namely that it was created to defend the integrity of the Alaska Governor’s Office from the onslaught of attacks. It includes her family and employees. So, if the Fund was designed to defend the Office of Governor, then doesn’t it have to stay in place to defend the next governor, just in case he has an onsalught of attacks, too?? The office of governor is different from defending Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska. (Who drafted that statement, anyway?)

Originally, John Coale gave an interview where he bragged that as soon as he launched the Fund, he got over $500,000. in donations. Now we read in the NY Times that they have $250,000. after paying legal expenses (and the travel expenses??). Once $arah leaves, is she still entitled to the use of the money when she is no longer governor? Those aren’t the terms.

As for the PAC– any idea what kind of money they have accumulated? I wonder how it compares to the growing war chests of some of the other presidential candidates? Jindal and Pawlenty are working very quietly to raise millions. I don’t think that $arah’s PAC can compete.

Great points and the biggest problem is that we have no way of knowing about any of it due to no regulation of this Fund. It was also set up with Sarah Palin listed and not just “The Governor”, so no one else or no other Governor can use any of these funds. JHop went over it before and gave a basic rundown and the whole thing is very hinky. After Palin leaves office watch for them to dissolve the fund and reestablish another one to allow for access from the “Ex-Governor”. ;)

See the problem I have with all this is the fact we have different people giving wildly different answers as to how much that Fund has gotten. The answers vary from the $250,000. that Kristian Cole says to the half a million or more that John Coale says….

We should be able to find out exactly how much the PAC has gotten by the end of this month. Last day for for collecting in the quarter was June 30th and they have 30 days to file the report. I check it periodically to see if they have filed early, but so far nothing.

If that is simply what is left over after the bills were paid, then how were they able to do that if the money is supposed to be “frozen”?

    Exactly! Really important questions!

BTW, wasn’t there discussion here just a few days ago—arising from Margaret Carlson on KO—about whether Coale in fact set up the Alaska Fund Trust in addition to SarahPAC? Well, the NYT article repeats that claim: Coale did help set up the legal defense fund.

Re whether the Palins’ personal legal bills have been paid or not, did anyone else notice how she seemed to downplay (relatively speaking, for the Whiner) their importance in her “fishing” interview with Andrea Mitchell? Listen about 2 minutes in.

When asked about their personal debt, SP referred to it as “a bit distracting” and “just one aspect” of why she quit, but she went on and on about the “thousands and thousands” of wasted state hours yada yada yada.
