Got a shot of this handsome guy sailing past Ester Island, near the salmon hatchery.  There must have been more than a dozen mature bald eagles and as many immature ones with brown mottled looking feathers.

    Thousands of dollars per person/per day to keep everyone housed in Anchorage, while homes go empty, vandalized, property and heating fuel stolen, pipes frozen. And families waiting…

    The energy stimulus money that Sarah refused on our behalf will mitigate some of the needs, through qualifying programs.
    We NEED that stimulus package, Alaska State Legislators.

    Please. Call a special session.

    She was in Texas before she quit.
    She called Cheney before she quit.
    She and Cheney (from what I have read) chatted before she was even a VP pick.
    Her first OpEd would seem to support big oil.

    I think that piece was designed to try and make Palin “appear” to be an energy expert and she may be the new mouth piece for Right against global warming and drill baby drill.

    Sarah obviously didn’t write that piece by herself. It does have some of Sarah thrown-in for good measure (like another veiled attack on the media) but someone else is pulling the strings here. Wonder who?

    Did Sarah quit “servin’ the people” and sell out to big oil?

    Just out of curiosity, what is the very worst thing that could happen to $arah if she was found to have committed all of those ethics violations? The Legislature did find that she acted inappropriately in Troopergate, and I guess that her knuckles are still stinging from the sharp rapping that they took. So she’s guilty; she’s leaving. Repay two months salary? Since it is illegal for an official to use their office resources for political campaigning, it applies here. $arah misused Alaskan state employees. So, she’ll also have to pay back their salaries, too.

    I also think that sleazy lovesick Gov.Sanford walked away from his duties when he planned a 10 day trip to see his Argentina Sweetheart. They didn’t have the muscle to remove him. Now we heard that Senator Ensign plans to run again– after bribing, I mean gifting, his lover’s family to keep it quiet. None of these selfish people belong in public office, not Ensign, not Sanford, not Palin!

    Great picture! I read with interest Andrew Halcro’s blog and then followed the link to the Newsminer editoral about Palin’s lack of involvement in the Alaskan media. EXCELLENT!

    The managing director makes some very valid points about media coverage in that past Alaskan governors were very willing to meet with the various editorial boards (ADN as well) and discuss how they felt their coverage are inaccurate, and didn’t just play the “media victim” card the way Palin does.

    I found Lindsey Graham to be the most condescending little white man just in his tone when he called Sotomayor “Ma’am”, notwithstanding the rest of his ridiculous words. I think I detected in her some well-justified contempt for him.

    Gosh we need many more Sotomayors and many less Lindsey Grahams amongst our leaders.

    I looked up NBC basketball camps…..as mentioned in GINO’s twitter. I will assume this is where Willow was instead of at resignation event. Italy tour is listed as from June 29th through July 12th. Mission statement is ‘Christian’ in tone, emphasis on self esteem, spirituality, Jesus Christ……but say they are not affliliated with any particular church. Apparently not any particular Christian church, that is–not sure how they’d feel about some Jewish or Muslim or atheist kid coming along. The write up for the Italy tour includes Vatican visit, religious-y descriptions of Peter being crucified upside down, yadda yadda.

    But I dunno, I think the Y has some Christian-y mission statement too.

    So, anyway, that’s where WIllow must have been.

    Bristol’s absence at resignation still unexplained.

    Oh, and Dear Lord, let’s hope the Palins paid for this Italy trip with their own money!!

    I love it around Ester. We sold our boat last year, gas was 400 a weekend and we decided to be more environmentally conscious. We’ll move into a sailboat again. I can’t imagine how spectacular the sound must be this summer.

    What it is, I think, is that the old white men racists do not think that a Latina, wise or not, could ever be the equal to them, and, given the “passes” that so many white guys have gotten to get where they are, simply because they are white and privileged (See: George W. Bush) they are afraid that their hold on power is being “taken” from them, because they think they are better than women and other minorities, and do not see that diverse life experience is a good thing amongst our leaders.

    I think the fact that being white in this country will soon no longer be the majority position has lots of (racist) white people scared, and I think that is what GINO tapped into during her campaign against Barack Obama–that “our country”, meaning “Our white country” is going to be taken over by “the blacks”, “the Latinos”, and if that were to happen, it would be a disaster of the most dire nature, given that God ordained this country to be Christian, and Jesus was white. Or something like that.

    So, anyway, I think, unfortunately, this racism stuff is going to keep coming to the surface more and more as the population gets more and more diverse (See: inner city kids coming to “white” pool scares a bunch of white parents who pull their precious children out of pool lest they be contaminated (?) ) But, for those of us in this country who love that it is becoming more diverse, I guess we can only hope that those who THINK they are better than the rest of humanity learn a little compassion and humbleness–Christian values that seem to be in short supply amongst those who most loudly call themselves “Christian”.

    In Politico, just read “Palin campaigning for Democrats? Unlikely”. Boy, these conservative democrats interviewed about Sarah took cover, ducked into elevators and meetings pretty quickly, complete with deer-in-the-headlight looks.

    This is an encouraging sign that tells us that she is not as popular as she seems to think and that oyster may be harder to grasp. I wouldn’t doubt that already Sarah is regretting surrendering, quitting, acknowledging defeat so soon. Have this gut-wrenching feeling she might try to return……yikes!

    I was just watching the hearings it was noted that, the first time this phrase was used was in 1994 in a speech, that Sotomayor provided to these hearings.

    The answer was no!

    Now this is something I have personal experience with.

    I have worked in both Home Health and extended care in Alaska.

    We have a very large elderly population here because many people came here to retire due to far better benefits (in terms of dollars) for seniors than down south. Also, a lot of ex-military people return here to retire.

    The aging of the baby boomers is compounding the issue.

    I have mixed feelings because I have seen a lot of abuse of the system by both consumers (a lot of entitlement issues) and health care providers (greed). But there are also people adminstering these programs who don’t seem qualified to assess the needs from afar. They refuse services to some people who desperately need them and give way too many to others who are simply riding the system.

    How to fix it? Well, I am all for universal health care (not just universal insurance coverage). The problem is the bureaucracy involved with providing universal health care. When I worked in home health I spent uncounted hours (not paid to anyone) doing an absolutely ridiculous amount of paperwork to prove that services were needed. Attempts to regulate the system have driven physicians and other healthcare providers out of the system because they spend more time pushing paper than actually taking care of people. This results in a shortage of providers. Professionals literally cannot afford to stay in business with the system that presently exists. My mother, who lives in CO and is elderly, has had difficulty finding a physician because many have just opted out of taking Medicare patients (due to the overwhelming paperwork).

    Now I work in extended care and have trouble getting my patients who have been rehabilitated home because of lack of services at home. This is often a personnel shortage problem. Home care providers are few and far between and the turn-over rate is very high. The state does not provide care 24/7.

    I could go on and on. Our system is so broken that I often just want quit. But I really love doing what I do and so those of us who care continue to struggle through it and scream at/or beg/cajole the people on the other end of the phone or we continue to write long letters (also time not paid for) to decribe the very human needs of the people we try to serve.

    I wonder if the spotlight is on Alaska in this because we have had so much more in terms of services than other states or because it is truely being mismanaged. When I brought this up at work the other day (we’ve known about it before this story came out) I was told “It’s just because there is a backlog”. I know that there are people making a lot of money somewhere in the system. And there were, initially a lot of people who thought the money tree would bloom forever so they promised people the sky. I get exceedingly frustrated by the “case managers” who don’t return phone calls or e-mails but I have no idea what they are dealing with on a day-to-day basis.

    Our system desperately needs fixing. But the fix is going to require those that feel entitled to suck some of it up. It also requires people to educate themselves on how the present system operates.

    I could rant on for hours about this. I can’t do it before my second cup of coffee.

    Finding good caregivers (particularly for Alzheimer’s patients) is incredibly hard. And oh so stressful for family members. Be sure to take care of yourself. My father had dementia (although not Alzheimers) and the only way I got through the last 3 years of his life was to talk with all of my friends who were going through the same thing. It wasn’t a formal support group (I just can’t hack that sort of thing-and who has time?) but no one else could understand all of the feelings that dementia brings up for the family members (esp the children).

    Hang in there.

    This reminds me of some of the interviews with African-American voters in MS who were convinced that Trent Lott was on their side. Nothing could have been further from the truth, but something he said resonated with them, and of course, the white voters as well. I am tempted to say “so-called” white voters because there is probably not a snowball’s chance in heck that their lines are “pure.” I think the notion of racial purity is screeched the loudest by bigots who have skeletons in their closets…sort of like elected closeted gays who consistently vote against things like gay marriage and equal rights (think Larry Craig of ID and Jim West of WA.)

    Having said all this, supposedly, I am white, but I’m not buying it. ;-)

    Sarah pales under Obama’s light. She has been trying her best since her resignation to emulate his words of hope trying to convince the political stage that she is somehow equal to him in ability and stature.

    I listen to her attempting to change her image using new words with an upbeat message and it feels like a fraud, still unknown to itself.

    She can mimic, pretend and try to show that she has grown, but that is what it is…mimicking and pretending to grow. Nothing has changed on the inside for Sarah Palin, except more anger and contempt for people who don’t think like she does.

    True growth comes from acknowledging your own weaknesses and not from pretending to be someone you are not. Sarah has yet to confront her own ego. She needs to realize that in order to grow she must first find her own humility and accept her own failings and acknowledge them. She should be able to hear her oppositions words and accept their messages to her. What she is getting back is feedback of “who” she is. But Sarah can’t stand seeing herself in that mirror and instead fights back instead of taking it in and using it for her own growth.

    Sarah’s biggest problem is her ego and her mouth. She just can’t let things go and she always needs to be right. Until she realizes that she is one of the most polarizing figures we have in politics, and that life isn’t about her version of “right”, she isn’t going to go anywhere other than into controversy and a constant stream of fighting and confrontations.

    lovemydogs, excellent posts @ 73 & 79. Thank you for sharing your perspective. Lee323 had an interesting post on the paper-pushing aspect (understatement) coming from a physician’s perspective. I wish I could find it, but perhaps he/she will weigh in again. I have some experience with the insurance companies since I am the office manager for a tiny practice. The amount of documentation required for reimbursement from some of the companies is unbelievable, and then they simply say they cannot pay the claim under one code so we have to resubmit under a lesser code. Ultimately, what we are paid is not enough to cover basic overhead of running the office. I am in the process of figuring out which insurance companies are the worst, and I am going to sever our relationship with them. We cannot afford to keep doing this.

    We need universal health care. I know many are swayed by the insurance company scare ads. There was an article on HuffPo about this, and many Canadians commented. Almost 100% indicated they would not give up their system. There is not perfect solution, but what we have not doesn’t even begin to address the problems we have.

    What say you, Canadians, Brits, Aussies, et al?

She believes she in invincible and always right. She thrives on adulation; witness how she was on the campaign trail; she was riding a huge high. Then remember how depressed she seemed after she came back to AK and the sea-change in her popularity there. One very sick woman and one to be pitied.

And when people tune in, whether it be to listen to “left” or “right” wing TV shows, to post on blogs, to call into radio shows or to read fluffy, meaningless op-ed pieces, the result is that ratings go up and revenues increase for whomever is providing the forum. And the truth about Sarah Palin doesn’t come close to the ‘myth’ of Sarah Palin. In fact the truth about Sarah Palin is that just about everything about Sarah Palin is a big fat lie.

    The truth of Sarah Palin has slowly chipped away at the myth of Sarah Palin until really all that is left is a mere caricature of that original ‘superwoman’ who was thrust upon the world last summer. And while a small minority of an increasingly shrinking political party may consciously choose to ignore all the facts and truths about Sarah Palin and cling to their original meme that this woman is ‘super’ because she is an pretty face for their increasingly delusional paranoia that America isn’t what they think it should be, the majority of Americans of both parties have seen behind the curtain.

    And for all Palin’s complaining about the media, the fact is they have given her a free ride. They have never asked any hard questions or demanded accountability for anything from her, even when they have been face to face with her.     I have no idea who she is in her private life (other than vindictive, ignorant and mean which I assume because of her behavior in public) but I am absolutely certain that she is not taking proper care of her DS child. One cannot do that and do all of the other crap that she is (or is not) doing in Alaska and the US.

    The National Health Service in England whilst not absolutely perfect, it is pretty damn wondeful.

    I can’t imagine how things would work without it. Nobody goes without good quality health care, even if they are an alcoholic homeless person without a penny to their name.

    Nobody is stopped from buying private health insurance if they want it, but
    it is purely a personal choice if the person can afford it.

    I have read a lot of horror stories in blogs and news articles from the US in the last couple of years. It is shocking to me how people over there have to suffer financial ruin and distress due to the disgraceful activities of the big insurance companies.

    The president is a wonderul man and I hope he can pass his health plan in spite of the self serving Republican party. No doubt they all have good insurance policies or enough money for it not to matter to them.

    I too, have been baffled by the MSM, which she conveniently rails against…and yet, they continually provide her a platform to advance her cause by perpetrating a fraud.

    What I deduce is that the only thing that would stop her (if only temporarily) would be conviction and imprisonment….and even that “appears” to be a tricky climax (no pun intended).

    I see on Andrew Halcro’s website he is reporting news regarding Palin’s first Epic Fail……her very own dairy. You know….the one where her hand picked Board of Ag, headed by her best friend Kristan Cole funneled big money to 4 farmers, and two ex dairy farmers. They got $650,000 in Federal grants, most of the equipment out of Mat Maid, the State of Alaska also paid farmers for milk they dumped in their fields, another $630,000 in State loans. Well…..it seems due to milk quality issues they have been pulled out of Target and Kaladi Brothers, have a $20,000 Federal Tax Lien placed on them and that they have not been making any payments to the state? With the Palin Gravy Train leaving the station, will Mr. Parnell continue this subsidation?

    If you don’t come into the learning experience admitting you have a lack and that the persons around you can, if you follow their advice, supply what is lacking, there is no point in you entering that learning experience.

    My experience as a student and as a Comm. Col. teacher is that learners are eager, interested, always wanting to go the extra distance, inquire further about the material than they have to for ‘the test’.

    I can’t say I’ve ever seen Sarah Palin ‘eager’ about anything in particular, nor interested enough to be moved to much in the way of action – what bills did she write or sponsor to help Native villages, Special Needs children, victims of rape/incest? What ’cause’ has she consistently been a champion of?

    As for going the extra distance, she couldn’t even finish the 4 year run that was her governorship.

    And she has never seemed to be interested (re: Andrew Halcro – ‘you have all those facts memorized, wow, but does it really matter?’) in doing more than what she thinks it takes to GET votes, and appears to disdain the idea that she should need to learn anything new, take anyone’s advice, on how to actually DO THE JOB to which she would be elected if she succeeded in getting all those votes.

There were very few people there and since $arah didn’t show up the local paper couldn’t really do a story about it.. So instead they just ran a picture of me sitting there in that shirt..     I think that this issue with the Medicaid/Medicare problem should be loudly shouted from the rooftops and the finger of blame placed squarely upon Palin’s shoulders. She has been the one in charge of the state. It is ultimately her responsibility. She loudly proclaims herself to be concerned about the welfare of people, yet her own state is in turmoil.

    On the Trig issue, I pointed out in the other open thread, Palin who claims to be such an advocate of special needs children certainly only uses her special needs child when it might help her with a photo op, like the Runners World Article, but where was Trig when she went to Evansville to speak to the RTL crowd? Home with a babysitter. Where was Trig when she went to NY to “walk for Autism”? Home with a babysitter. She had no problem with traipsing all over the country with him (and a state paid babysitter) during the campaign, but now, suddenly she can’t be bothered to bring him along to events that involve special needs. Why is that? Inconvenient for her to actually have to take care of the little one? Can’t have as much fun if you have someone around that actually needs a little attention from you?

    And one thing I would like to point out about the Kerry response in the Daily Kos piece (thanks UK Lady #100 for this) which strikes me as the heart of the matter that he seems to understand that so many in the media miss…..

    When asked why he felt the need to respond to Palin’s Opinion piece he replied…
    when something’s flat out wrong and it’s part of the news cycle, you use the truth to crush it before it takes on a life of its own,

    Where I agree with Steve is that Sarah’s future is religion based, and because of the study that I do on the 7 mountains believers among Dominionists I find that very scary. The one thing this group has been lacking is a charismatic leader who has a broad appeal. A recent HuffPo (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bruce-wilson/john-ensign-linked-to-do_b_231272.html) will give you some idea about this new religious movement. But it is really worse than that because there is a connection with militias and groups collecting weapons for the end times. The Wasilla Bible Chursh is part of this and there is a connection to the AIP.

    MSM really doesn’t want to report on what is going on in the darks corners of Christianity but I consider this the greatest threat to our peace.

    You are not alone in being untechnical. I am going to email AKM and ask to have clear easy instuctions on how to do links and post pictures. I think they are the most asked for things that people don’t know how to do.

    If AKM is amenable these instructions could go in the FAQ section (Frequently asked questions), which is situated in the black heading bar just under the Mudflats headline.

    If you press your arrow on FAQ you come up with lots of answers to questions you may have.

    Some of the scare tactics I heard on Morning Joe :

    1> Govnt gets between you and doc…wrong
    2> People get MRI” cat scans etc, whenever they ask….wrong. (Doctors do regular testing, and use those tests when warranted)
    3. Wait times are far too long….perhaps sometimes. Usually for elective surgeries. My husband was diagnosed with heart problems 1 month ago, and he is having heart surgery on July 29. Not bad..huh?
    4. We dont get to choose our docs—-wrong again.

    There is more, but that was the highlights. My company is currently employing an American from Washington state. He is thrilled with his healthcare here…as well as his company paid benefit plan from work. That plan allows for him to have free dental…optomotrist-therapeutic massage, free prescriptions…and semi private hospital coverage. He is also covered for out of country travel.

    He tells me, that the difference he pays in income taxes here, compared to his home state is negligble, and feels its well worth the benefits he is receiving.

    I know other Canadians may have had various issues, because as I said, we are not perfect. However it feels good to know that everyone of my compatriots gets the same quality of care that I do.

    I have never in my life been given a bill for healthcare….I never have to worry about getting sick and losing everything I have.

    Folks…don’t let that fear speech get to you. Govnt. sponsored health care is a gift. Get behind your president on his health care plans. I can assure you, you will never be sorry.

    The insurance companies won’t like it, but if they can spend billions lobbying your government…then why can they not pay for someone’s healthcare because there was a preexisting condition. That doesnt happen here.

    At one time, at least in Ontario, we did have a time where you could be charged for a portion of the fee over and above what the government paid. I’m talking 30 years ago as I received bills from the anesthetist and the oral surgeon. The anesthestist was $500 and surgeon was about $1,000. So our system has had changes throughout it’s life. This no longer applies.

    Fortunately Santa was good to me that year and delivered an envelope around a 4 foot Smurf as my surgery was Dec 21 and was released from hosp Christmas morning. Santa must have known I was going to be home that day!!!

We are fascinated by Sarah’s incredible naïveté, her righteous world view and her over-inflated ego. Her actions are so extreme they defy common sense and it captures our attention. Yes, we are indeed fascinated by Sarah but for all the wrong reasons!

    The reason why Sarah Palin and extremists like her are so fascinating for us to talk about and to watch is because their own understanding of life, has no intelligence in which to defend itself. It causes us to stop and stare, shocked with disbelief over statements or actions which make little if no sense.

    Extremists like Sarah Palin want so much to be “right” that they render themselves unable to learn anything new. Their reasoning consists of mindless repetition of the same old antiquated beliefs. Even their old bullying tactics no longer work, and they ultimately end up feeling defeated and afraid. This fear drives them to extreme measures without any conscious understanding of the cliff they are about to jump off of. Well, it seems Sarah just jumped off that cliff.

    This is not the rise of Sarah Palin or even the extreme right; rather, they are just reacting violently to their own political and social death. Their hatred of anything that challenges their own ignorance is a catalyst for their rage and it spills outwardly in the form of bigotry, intolerance and anger against those they hate and blame the most.

    These are the death throes of the extreme right and no matter how clever they believe their plans to be, they are lashing out mindlessly and ineffectively. Sarah Palin is headed to the outer fringes of society where extremism can live quietly, and by the rules of the wild without a political following shocked and awed at her level of ignorance and ineptitude.

    Whether Sarah Palin is a narcissist and or has a personality disorder, she certainly does not unite or attempt to unite anyone. All she does is polorize and and anger the very people she needs to draw in and win over.

    No one in this country will ever elect her for any office, until she looks in the mirror and finds out the truth about who she really is. And I am pretty sure she will never do that!

    You know, 3 years ago, hubby and I were in Nova Scotia on holiday. We are from Manitoba. My husband nearly got his big toe cut off while cutting grass at one of the apartment buildings my SIL owns…and of course had to go to hospital.

    Silly me, I did not remember to bring our Manitoba Health cards with us…and the doc on duty stitched him up…gave him a script…and said…”call us with your number when you get home…if you remember”.

    I think we are very lucky.

    A few people had questions in the disparity of two recent polls regarding Palin. My last post on this got lost somewhere in the moderation process because of multiple links, so I will do it in two posts.

    The wording of the actual questions in polls is important in understanding the polling differences.

    The USA Today poll from last week showed that 2/3’s of Republicans would like to see Palin as “a major national figure” in the future. The vague term, “major national figure,” can range all the way from the position of POTUS…. to dear Sarah standing in the middle of the reflecting pool on the National Mall with pigeons perched on her head. (I’m personally leaning toward the pigeon gig for her).

    The abrupt resignation and the bizarre speech on July 3rd really sunk $arah. First people felt sympathy, based upon reading the initial reports. Then they actually saw the speech & saw the rebuttals and realized that there is absolutely no depth to $arah. NONE. Throughout her career, she’s just been in the right place at the right time (albeit in a small state, where it’s easier). The McCain campaign elevated her to a place she would never be on her own. And they CANNOT admit they were wrong, it would destroy their credibility – John’s to run again, and any campaign worker for further employment.

    Is it only politics where you can get away with this crap? In the real world performance & what you say counts. You’d be fired or not hired to begin with.
