Huge Blob of Arctic Goo?
OK, when you see the phrase “Huge Blob of Arctic Goo” in the title of a newspaper article, the first thing you think is, “Am I sleeping? Is this going to be one of those weird dreams where I want to run but I can’t, and then my eighth grade math teacher is going to peel her face off and be my dad?” But no… it’s true. There is a huge blob of Arctic goo floating in the Chukchi Sea off the north coast of Alaska. Nobody has any idea what it is, but they think it’s “biological.” It’s 15 miles long. Wow. Where’s Alfred Hitchcock when you need him?

Yup. A special session of the Legislature has been called. The spendy gathering of Alaska lawmakers will happen on August 10 in Anchorage. The legislature will most likely be voting to override Palin’s veto of stimulus money slated for energy cost relief which requires a 3/4 majority of house and senate. They will, presumably, also be looking at confirmation of the new acting temporary Lt. Governor Craig Campbell.
And Palin Thinks She’s Got Financial Problems?
Alaska’s one lone congressman, the buffoon in a bolo, the bitin’ mink, Rep. Don Young keep on rackin’ up the legal bills. According to Politico, and his latest campaign disclosure report, his reelection committee now owes more than $46,000 to Tobin, O’Connor, Ewing and Richard.
Young also has a less than overwhelming $129,000 in the bank as of June 30, raising questions about whether he will have the financial resources to handle another expensive campaign next year.
If you look real hard, you can begin to see dark cloudy shapes in the distance, swimming in slow deliberate circles around Young….waiting and sniffing and watching….
Rules Schmules
We’ve talked before about how if there’s an inconvenient rule, our soon-to-be-ex-almost-one-term governor tends to ignore it and then make up another one that she then decides to follow. Apparently the “rules schmules rule” holds true even in the smallest of micro-communications – the tweet. As anyone who follows Twitter knows, each post is a mini-blog, and the only and only rule? You must say what you have to say in 140 characters or less. So people, including the governor, tend to become creative and use abbreviations like 4 instead of “for” and b/c instead of because.
But even this rule has now been thrown under the Palin bus. Behold what I like to call “The Bear Trilogy.” Apparently the governor simply could not fit all the conservative life lessons taught by bears at the McNeill River Bear Sanctuary in one little tweet. Read from the bottom up. There’s even an epilogue.

Hmmm..I thought the story went like this: the mama bear rose up on her hind legs, saw Russia turned in another direction and saw $! $!, growled (to her cubs) get out of my way! Ran away leaving Papa bear to tend to the cubs.
Using the word “gutterel” (which doesn’t exist), she’s may believe the definition of the word means instinctual or from the gut—since the first syllable is “gut”. Her intellect never ceases to amaze me.

I think it is wonderful, the way Ray Ward’s ethics complaint was rejected, at basically the first step of the process and obviously negligible expense. It deserved to be rejected if he indeed included no evidence that Palin had been paid for any media interviews.
This supports the idea that complaints without merit are likely to cost the state very little, and this one likely did not cost Palin herself one dollar. Sounds to me like the system works.

It means you magically know when to gargle with Listerine.
Makes you wonder about that mother bear’s moral character–”brazenly rising up” like that. I typically see the word “brazen” used in conjunction with “hussy” (okay, so expressions lag by a century or two in my part of the world). For those who don’t know, a “brazen hussy” is a forward, brash, sexually bold woman. Gives a whole new meaning to the whole brazen mother bear thing.
Yes, I DO wonder what the hell she meant by Gutteral. First, as others have so aptly pointed out, it’s misspelled. Second, it’s misused. And third, well, it’s just wrong that she is a tweeting soon-to-be-ex-governor of a partial term. How sophomoric she is. I just can’t stand it.

I have seen some bad tweets and may have written a few myself. But wow, She can’t even get that one right. McCain tweets are easier to read.

I think you can just forget about Sarah running for anything in Alaska – one of the reasons she quit is that her approval here now is LOW LOW LOW LOW LOW. I have found editorials in almost every Alaskan newspaper I’ve checked which state in opinion that Sarah did the right thing for Alaska in stepping down – some said it “not so nicely”. The Alaska media would RIP her now compared to how easy they were on her – she’s pissed almost all of them off now with her bleating and tweeting about poor Sarah and the ugly media beasts.
Ketchikan in Southeast Alaska, and Fairabanks in Interior Alaska – both communities were very much pro-Palin, and both have now written very astute and not so pleasant things about Palin’s record and performance. An odd observation is that the Peninsula Clarion from the Kenai Peninsula area (very pro Palin) has not seemed to utter a word about her quitting! Are they burying their head in the sand, pretending NO NO NO she didn’t really quit? Kind of telling if you ask me.

Just to clarify the Peninsula Clarion’s omission of anything Palin and quitting – rumors flew after the failed VP bid that a bunch of her Bots were going to move up here to support her and vote for her re-election for gov bid (we see how well that part worked out) – I read this many times in comment wars with the Palin Bots especially in Nov and Dec before the session started. That was back in the day that I cared about the comment wars.
If Bots were going to come – they would most likely try to settle in Palin Bot country which would be the Mat Su Valley, and the Kenai Peninsula. Of the other kind of Palin friendly places, Ketchikan is too out of the way and has no roads, and the Interior is too cold and the poor bots would freeze. So, I wonder if any of these miserable bots actually made it up here to suck up the spittle falling from her lipsticked lying mouth?

But then again she relies on people “correcting” her messages.
A verbal Rorschach, in which people project their meaning onto her word jumble. Their ‘correction’ is always reasonable to that themselves. And so she seems more reasonable.
Maybe if she had been perfectly articulate, she’d have been perfectly ridiculous. We’ll never know…

I think you’ve missed my point about Alaskan media – whether Palin reads or not, the media up here was very kind to her, starting w/ her quitting the Oil and Gas Conservation Committee. This made it very easy for her – she counted on that!

Thanks to the people and legislature of South Carolina, there is a precedent for taking Parnell to court to force him to apply for the stimulus money when the legislature overrides the veto. Has that possibility been discussed and is there a plan in place to file that suit when he refuses to apply?

Someone commented that the ADN article on the Medicaid scandal was buried on the ADN site. I’m surprised it didn’t turn up in the national news. The article on the APD cop and rape charges are all over the country, but not this news about a federal moratorium/mismanaged healthcare for the elderly and disabled which may have attributed to hundreds of deaths during the last 2.5 years? I am still fascinated by the blob, just in case anyone is asking. Cruise ship waste? Something that floated up from the ocean floor? Something that came out of a now-melted iceberg (not that one
)? The possibilities are endless and I love a natural mystery.
Jesse Ventura was on Larry King last night, I know he’s a strange one, but he often makes a lot of sense. His take on it was that Sarah is a quitter & in his opinion didn’t receive anymore scrutiny & slights than him and his family did when he was gov of MN. He was picked on terribly when he was guv & the butt of many jokes but he made a 4 year commitment and said that he gave his word to MN & fulfilled it.

Ventura, a former Navy SEAL himself, was governor of Minnesota from 1999 to 2003. Before that, he was a professional wrestler.
During the CNN interview, Ventura dismissed the suggestion that as yet unknown facts might provide a valid explanation for Palin’s resignation.
“I don’t think she was put under any more media scrutiny than I was … My children were attacked in Minnesota,” he said. “Everything I did was put under the microscope. The point is, Larry, you don’t quit. When you make an obligation and you take an oath, doesn’t it mean anything anymore?

I think she supposes gut is short for gutterel and is showing off how smartass she is–smart being short for smartass, as you know.
It reminds me of Scots trying to “speak posh.” They put back all the “ings” they’re used to dropping. Unfortunately, they tend to put them back onto words that never had them in the first place and end up saying things like, “oranges and lemmings.”

The managing editor of the Peninsula Clarion is a raving Repub idiot. Yesterday they had an AP story about SP’s ghostwriter’s WaPo article. There was a story about her quitting a little while back but I think it was lifted from another paper and pretty bland. She won’t let her writers do a lot of the stories that they would like to do. Yesterday they posted answers to the question they posed “Do you think SP quitting is good for Alaska?” Interestingly, both the yeas and nays had an overall negative spin concerning SP–paraphrased examples: Yes it is good that she is quitting because we will be rid of someone who does nothing. No because she is leaving Alaska in a lurch. There was one answer whining “Why can’t they leave “our Sarah” alone. And one pleading SP to stand and fight the meanies.
I’ll bet some of the people who read the Clarion love her tweets.
The good news is that most of the hard-core Sarah lovers who voted for her in both the state and national elections have told me that they feel betrayed by her and would never vote for her again.
And please, please, please-we don’t need anymore Palinbots here. It is bad enough as it is.

I had a comment on the open thread this morning and on the Huffpo piece. I had no problem with the misspelling or the use of her words because she does it all the time. Just business as usual. And trying to ‘ understand ‘ the analogy…? ( channel Tony Soprano )…. fugetaboutit.
The ‘ bizarre’ thing for me was that she felt she would NOT follow the Rules. 3 tweets just to post a stupid message…? It’s so simple.
Laws… what laws… those are for OTHER people…. NOT $arah…. those don’t apply.

Thanks for the info – I had a really hard time finding even the items you mentioned in the online version of the Clarion. I know what it’s like – I used to live in Seward! The peninsula is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful – when I heard rumors of Palin Bots moving there it was going to be in a religious camp / commune style. That gave me the creeps!

I am with you, the problem child. That article mentioned some instances of misuse of the word, but it didn’t say that misuse made it mainstream. If you look it up in the dictionary, there is no definition of gutteral, as Palin spelled it, unless you look in the online urban dictionary. The definition for guttural is something different from what Palin used. Please don’t give her credit where it isn’t due. She clearly meant visceral, but didn’t know the difference. Just because some misuse and misspell the word, it doesn’t make it okay. Usage is still what it is until enough people misuse it to force a change.
RE: The Twitter Trifecta — I dunno, I WAS an English major in college, so I’m all aware of that whole “foreshadowing” thingee (or as we called it “Foreshadowing: Your Key to Quality Literature”). But Palin sure had me going with that analogy about the bears – boy, I didn’t realize until the very last, um ….. twit that she was talkin’ about HER bein’ the bear, and protecting the world, or somethin’. Wow (removing tongue from cheek now ….)
After I posted @117, I realized that, ultimately, this does not matter in the grand scheme of things in terms of Sarah. We all know that she has spelling and usage issues (and a host of others), and when we point them out, we are preaching to the choir, as it were. What good does that do?

ds55, I understand what you are saying, and thank you. However, I wish I could believe that her supporters would be swayed by what we say here on the ‘flats, but I cannot. This is especially true, I think, when we are critical of her personally, rather than being critical of her policies and governance (or lack thereof.) Even if we could refrain from the personal attacks, I think her true believers will remain just that. Just my cynical side speaking here. I hope I am wrong.
