Open Thread – Water Totem
One of my favorite things to do along the rocky shore line of the little coves in Prince William Sound is to look at the images reflected in the water sideways. They take on all kinds of interesting forms. I like to photograph them and then turn them on edge. Sometimes I see much more in the picture than I did when I was actually there, standing like an idiot with my head all bent over 90 degrees for minutes on end. I really like the way this image turned out. There are so many interesting faces and patterns. It’s like a combination of a totem pole and a kaleidoscope.

Maureen Dowd in yesterday’s NYT.
Sarah Palin is the definition of irrational, a volatile and scattered country-music queen without the music. Her Republican fans defend her lack of application and intellect, happy to settle for her emotional electricity.
UH OH…only one column about Sarah today! Don’t tell me the MSM has forsaken her? What will she do to get her name in the media now?! Any guesses? A hissy fit or op-ed or…?
I’d just like to point out that the ADN has dropped the story of the Alaska Medicaid/Medicare Freeze off from the front page of their paper, (and to find it you have to go to “News” open the page to the “older” stories and look down just a little over half way down the page to find it) and yet they still have the story of Palin’s latest dropped ethics complaint up on the front page.
Fascinating picture AKM but now I have a crick in my neck from trying to examine it sideways (o:
AKM, I think this is going to be one of my all-time favorite photos. I love the images that I see in the water. Wow.
To UK Lady, Canadian Neighbour, and Laurie, thank you all for responding yesterday to my request for input about your health-care systems. It is important that people in the U. What a beautiful image.

AKM, is it true that Anchorage has no accommodation for folks coming from far away to have chemo etc?
Our capital city has dozens of homes founded and sustained by various organizations for just such people. I’m finding it hard to credit that Anchorage does not.
If it’s true that people have to stay in hotels at $150/night in summer or sleep at the airport when they come to Anchorage for chemo or other treatment, then what can be done about it?

Today, Sarah Palin saw a bear do something in the woods . . .
“America’s infamous capricious sprite, Sarah Palin, is still out there “advancing in another direction.” Today she saw a bear, a transformative experience which inspired her leviathan intellect to ponder the lessons she learned from it, lessons she shared on Twitter.
Whoa! Are we the only ones sensing that the Twit of the Tundra’s brain droppings are laden with coded messages? Coded messages like “I will kill David Letterman for raping my daughters” and “bloggers who make fun of Trig will be eaten” and “the lower 48 is Alaska’s dirty bi*ch” and “Todd is a creepy tool with a room temperature IQ and I don’t need his dumb a$$,” among other things.
We said this when she joined Twitter but it bears (pun intended) repeating: Sarah Palin on Twitter is the best thing to ever happen on the internet.

This was my comment on theimmoralminority about the bear twits:
“Gutteral” is not a word in the English language. “Guttural” is a word in the English language with the meaning “pertaining to the throat”, “harsh or throaty”.
I suspect that the author of the phrase “gutteral raw instinct”, crossed a few mental wires (Palin _is_ said to be wired differently) and tried to invent a word to invoke the feeling of “gut” as in “abdomen” but failed completely.
Gov. Palin’s mis-twits are at the moment going out to 98,000+ followers plus visitors to the twit web page. For that size audience an editor is warranted.

Anyone remember the post AKM wrote about killing the mama bears and cubs?
For Palin to support killing them then using the poor creatures in a tweet is disgusting. I will try to find it in the archives.
Very nice pic. Glad I have a lap top that was easy enough to flip it to see the other side. I wonder how many of us see the same thing in the picture. I see two Aztec figures in the picture, the very big one then a smaller one inside of the big one. I have some paintings by Artist Judy Larson http://www.greatsmokiesart.com/larson.html…they have pictures inside the picture.

AKM, put the Water Totem in the mudflats shop, pls.

Thanks austintx – will check it out.

I thought there was another one about mama bears and cubs but haven’t found it.
Search under Bill Sherwonit. You should find it there. AKM
The Bear Tweet seems to be a little late to the party. That Letterman thing took place a month or so ago. So, who is saying bad things about the Palin kids now that Mama Bear has to rush in to save them (and the species)?? Is this a preemptive strike because more bad news is coming out soon?
I am enjoying “bears’ gutteral” mistake, with a misplaced apostrophe (bear’s) and misspelled word (guttural). This is clear evidence that the person who wrote the tweets did not write the Washington Post article.
I can’t wait to read $arah’s quote of the day. In case she is still searching for one, I suggest: “Spelling counts. Spelling is not merely a tedious exercise in a fourth-grade classroom. Spelling is one of the outward and visible marks of a disciplined mind.” -James J. Kilpatrick

This is Van Flien:
What I did the other day is I went to the constitutional minutes, and I looked up the discussion of Article 3, Section 9, and it turns out that the discussion was about when the governor is incapacitated due to illness or coma or somehow not available. That is a temporary absence. And in 1955, we didn’t have cell phones and we didn’t have satellite communications, and when the governor left the state of Alaska back then, or the territory of Alaska back then, they really were temporarily absent and probably turned it over
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Really?/ How DOES one do ANYTHING when they are in a coma, or completely incapacitated??
Oh I’m going into a coma shortly, but before I do, I will hand over control of the state to the Lt Governor.
This guy is as dumb as a sack of $hit!
Just because times have changed and the “laws” have not kept up, does not mean they are not in effect.
Greta’s boneheaded question about “what did Obama and McCain do about their jobs during the campaign” , is as relevant to this story as the price of rice in China.
It is NOT only Alaska that has this law. Palin’s good friend Rick Perry took over for Bush in the 2000 campaign, because that is Texas state LAW!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
http://www.whorunsgov.com/Profiles/Rick_Perry
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Texas Governor
Perry had barely settled into the lieutenant governor’s office when Gov. George W. Bush announced in 1999 that he would run for president.
================================================
Under Texas law, the lieutenant governor assumes control when the governor is out of state and Bush would be out of state a lot.
================================================
The ascending Perry quickly drew political heat. A fund-raising letter he sent to lobbyists directing them to pledge their contributions to his campaign as well as $25,000 from each of their clients was denounced as heavy handed.(13)
Then Perry was caught on videotape stepping out of his car to talk a state trooper out of giving his driver a speeding ticket. ”Why don’t you just let us get on down the road?” Perry asked the trooper, who let the driver go with a warning. Perry later said he regretted leaving the car but denied pressuring the trooper to drop the ticket.(13)
Perry proved much more of a partisan than Bush. Democratic lawmakers complained that Perry had broken the unwritten rule in Austin by campaigning against incumbent Democrats in the state legislature.(14)
Perry, too, saw things as more partisan. But he saw himself as a victim, rather than a perpetrator, of partisan sniping. “The day George Bush left here, the muzzles were taken off,” Perry said at the time.(15)
Perry was finally sworn-in as Texas governor in December 2000 after Bush was confirmed as president. In 2002, he sought a four-year term of his own, running against Democrat Tony Sanchez, a political novice from Laredo with a family fortune estimated at $600 million.(16)
Judy and I lived on Prince William Sound for ten years. Anytime I see pictures of the Sound, or read of somebody’s waterborne experiences there, great memories come back.
Thanks, AKM for the PWS pics and sailing/hiking stories.
Well I went and looked up this Texas law that says when the governor leaves the state the Lt Governor takes over.
Palin’s friend Perry did this in 2000 when Bush campaigned for POTUS.
In fact Perry was sworn in as Governor in December of that year as Bush prepared for the innaugeration.
Please note #1 and #4.
AKM, that is beautiful!!! All of your photos are beautiful.
As an exhibiting artist, I have to tell you that I can see your work in a gallery. Really! Think about getting larger(ish) prints developed and framed nicely and submit your works to some galleries. I really think you could have a nice show! Here’s a show theme…Politics vs. Nature….something to think about!!!
Susan Reimer of the Baltimore sun has an excellent article, Reactions to Palin: Men mystified, women mad.
“Cariboo Barbie is one nutty puppy” Maureen Dowd NY Times
“Now we know she not only doesn’t have the concentration to read a policy paper, she can’t focus long enough to finish the job she was hired to do.”
Gail Collins NY Times.
Also entertaining in this article, when Reimer referred to men seeming to agree that if this was her way to the presidency, it was through the wilderness.
Of course, this Alaskan and all my mudpuppy friends out there have known and voiced similar or the same humorous comments for a long time now.
Yes, Governor used to be has one of the highest “DUH” factors in the current political arena in the entire country and has turned herself into a real sideshow act. I like to think that she is running out of ammo and her fireworks finale is truly business as usual.
Thanks for the link. Interestingly, van flea seems to confirm that “thumping” was not a mistake in the tweet, and his reference seems to be directly to Emmanuel/Obama. Creepy. These guys have no idea how idiotic they sound with their conspiracy theories!!!
From Andrew Sullivan’s blog today: The AIP/Todd lie is even worse!
Peter Suderman, trying to make sense of Palin like the rest of us, settles on three major traits: ambition, incoherence, and paranoia. Regarding the latter, he points to a now-familiar story containing a key detail the Dish had missed:
After hearing someone from a crowd shout a derisive remark about his membership, Palin sent an email to Schmidt grossly exaggerating what had happened, saying that she’d seen protester signs and received questions about her husband’s [Alaska Independence Party] membership from multiple reporters. She wanted a statement released addressing the issue. But the statement she wanted released — that secession isn’t part of the group’s platform and that Todd’s membership was an “error” — was untrue.
Schmidt called her bluff and refused to send out any statement about Todd’s membership, arguing that doing so would only draw attention to what was really a non-issue.
The incident seems revealing: Palin, faced with a single comment in a rope line, built up substantial threat in her mind where none previously existed and then attempted to readjust the facts of the case to make her and her family seem more victimized.
Another word for her, for the ‘gutteral’ bear thing – ‘primal’ instinct.
Or just simply ‘instinctive’. Well, not so good for twittering, though.
English 113 – Contemporary Twitter Analysis, Poetry On The Move
“She brazenly rises up on strong hind legs” – this bear is brazen, too, also, and bold!
Def. of brazen – “Marked by flagrant and insolent audacity”; “marked by contemptuous boldness .”
“…growls Don’t Touch My Cubs & the species survives” – Uh oh. An unwitting endorsement of evolution, Darwin’s natural selection, survival of the fittest, perpetuation of the species.
Geez, Sarah, you’re allowing yourself to be led astray by that bear biologist liberal agenda. I know it makes sense; that’s how you know it’s the devil.
thanks for the response, personally i find it sad and disappointing.
I just read in the paper this morning that Andrew Cuomo’s reelection campaign raised 5 MILLION dollars between mid-Jan and mid-July, bringing the total to 10 million. He raised that for a state office (speculation is that he may run for governor of NY next time instead of Attorney General), not a national one. I live in NY and I never saw anything in the media about the fundraising campaign. The only times I see him in the media are when he’s announcing something important that his office has accomplished on behalf of the citizens of NY.
Buttercup, on the other hand, with a national PAC begging in any and every place they could and her face splashed all over the media, only raised about $700,000 during that same period.
And which of these people has a brighter political future??????
Bits and pieces from around the country.
CBS news (cbsnews.com)
“A majority of Americans believe that Sarah Palin is resigning as governor of Alaska not because it’s in the best interest of her state but because it will benefit her political career, a new CBS News poll finds.
Just 24 percent of those accept Palin’s explanation that she resigned because it was the right thing to do for Alaska. More than twice that percentage – 52 percent – cited her political ambition as the reason for her resignation. An additional 14 percent said they don’t know the reason.”
Questions about AGIA
“…questions linger over her signature energy initiative: the construction of a natural gas pipeline from Alaska’s North Slope to markets in Canada and the Lower 48.
The next legislative session “could decide whether A.G.I.A. actually becomes a pipeline project, or remains just a pipe dream,” wrote Beth Kerttula, a Democratic state representative in Alaska, in response to Ms. Palin’s resignation.
In an interview, Mr. Parnell stressed his commitment to “responsible resource development” and promised to fight federal decisions that get in the way of it.
Mr. Parnell is also promising to stick with A.G.I.A., and to follow the hard line Ms. Palin has taken with the major producers on gas production taxes and other fiscal issues.”
Huffington Post, Michael Brune
Palin’s Pipeline From Hell
“There’s a stealth dirty oil mega-project sneaking into the United States. It’s arriving piece by piece, pipeline by pipeline, refinery by refinery, and permit by permit — but it’s a singularly immense monstrosity conceived by Big Oil. It’s called the Canadian Tar Sands, or as the oil industry prefers, Canadian Oil Sands.
…
But this gas won’t be heading straight to the Lower 48, perhaps as a temporary alternative to America’s greenhouse gas-belching, coal-fired power plants. No such luck. Instead, the pipeline will run to Alberta, where, based on current projections, about half of it is likely to be siphoned to help produce the dirtiest oil on earth.
…
In these locations, massive quantities of natural gas are piped in to make steam. The steam is injected into the ground, liquefying the bitumen. Although this operation is undoubtedly an engineering accomplishment, it’s also kind of, well, stupid. Eric Reguly, a reporter for the Canadian newspaper, The Globe and Mail described burning natural gas in the tar sands this way, “Burning a clean fuel to make a dirty fuel is a kind of reverse alchemy, like turning gold into lead.” ”
Huffington Post
The Army has revoked the deployment orders for a soldier who said he shouldn’t have to go to Afghanistan because (he believes) Barack Obama was never eligible to be president.
Because he’s a reserve soldier who volunteered for an active duty tour he can “ask for a revocation of orders up until the day he is scheduled to report for active duty,” a public affairs officer explained. Cook volunteered for the tour in May of this year. It is not clear why he did so, considering his current objections.
U.S. Army Maj. Stefan Frederick Cook has argued that he shouldn’t have to go to Afghanistan because the man sending him there isn’t really president.
Cook further states he “would be acting in violation of international law by engaging in military actions outside the United States under this President’s command. … simultaneously subjecting himself to possible prosecution as a war criminal by the faithful execution of these duties.”
I thought it was going to be a quiet day away from any Palin saga. NOT. That twitter about the bears is so hypocritical. She creates her own personal parables, writing about an object, animal or something, and translates it into human-related lessons for all to learn.
From her tweet, “mama bear doesn’t look 2 anyone else 2 hand her anything”.
First of all, we aren’t bears. We are unique human beings. Yes, wildlife and creation is magnificent, but the country is in a recession and the bears cannot at this time provide. As a christian, she must know that God can provide? One way he does is:
Then Jesus will turn to those on His left hand and say, “Depart from me because I was hungry and you did not feed me, I was thirsty and you did not give me drink, I was sick and you did not visit me”. These will ask Him: “When did we see you hungry, or thirsty or sick and did not come to your help?” And Jesus will answer them: Whatever you neglected to do unto one of the least of these, you neglectd to do unto Me”.
Am wondering if this tweet is a subtle reference to those who need Medicare/Medicaid.
closetmudpup@57:
Once again I need to state that there are 2 sides to every story.
I asked InJuneau about the crap being dumped in the lake a couple of days ago. She said that her crowd “didn’t like it”. I find it absurd that the mining company says they will “restock” the lake when they are done. “With what?” I ask. “Dead fish?” After you have effectively killed the entire ecosystem of a lake?
However, InJuneau did admit that it would probably provide jobs for locals. The joke is that the 350 or so jobs that are being touted will probably only be during the construction phase. After that? Back to unemployment?
Lisa Murkowski is ALL FOR this one. She is on my radar.
The logging issue is even harder to grasp.
I lived in Sitka for a year where many people who had worked at the mill were either unemployed or had decided to try their hands at commercial fishing (contributing to overfishing and declining returns of fish there).
When my husband and I were in Washington and Oregon for a vacation we stayed in an area where all of the local people had been loggers. Their families had been loggers for generations. When one asked them about logging (or the lack thereof) one received very angry diatribes about environmentalists taking their livlihoods (and way of life) away from them.
I am not big on logging when it is done in an environmentally unsound way. I do not profess to understand all of the ins and outs of how it is done but seeing eroding mountainsides in Washington state was appalling.
However, there are two things to consider. Much like the fishing issues.
Once man starts screwing around with ecosystems it is very difficult to go back. I believe in old growth forests. Once they are gone we cannot go back. But once we have interfered and once “civilization” has encroached on areas that Mother Nature used to deal with herself (i.e. natural fires, etc), problems crop up (consider pine and spruce bark beetle infestations). So it may be possible that some logging can be done responsibly (like replanting where you have logged). I don’t know enough about it.
The second consideration is that people have to eat, pay their rent/mortgages, send their kids to school, etc. The problem is that in many of these communities people don’t or can’t see any other way to make a living. They have been doing it for so long that they don’t want to change and they are not educated enough to find any other kind of employment (or the opportunities in the communities where they want to live are very limited).
I strongly invite all southeasters to jump in as I may be completely full of it.
Phil Munger has a new post up regarding the Special Session and Sean Parnell.
Looks like Parnell is just going to continue along with Palin’s ideas & plans. He does’t want that $28 million in stimulus funds.
Townsend goes on in her report to state, “If legislators decide to vote to override the veto, Parnell will have the authority to continue to act on his belief, as Governor, he will be able to refuse to spend the money, even with legislative direction, and will not necessarily order the paperwork to receive the Federal funds. Those actions are outside of the legislature’s control.”
So now Alaska is going to have Palin Part II
Very interesting article here
http://scienceblogs.com/mikethemadbiologist/2009/07/misunderstanding_palin_and_pal.php?utm_source=sbhomepage&utm_medium=link&utm_content=channellink
“There is a disconcerting streak of marginalization of the Other (e.g., gays, religious minorities, racial minorities) that could easily veer into eliminationist rhetoric and violence; arguably, Palin came very close in the 2008 campaign. Had Palin or McCain wanted to, they could have incited their political rallies to violence; they were that angry.”
and the scariest part
“Historically, the politics of the blood hasn’t needed a majority, just a sizable minority, to be successful.”
CG – you always post great links etc. thank you!!
RE: U.S. Army Maj. Stefan Frederick Cook – The Daily Kos has debunked the guy – apparently he is a Freeper (Free Republic) – they found his posts. So he signed up for service under President Obama and now makes his claim. It was all planned & he’s using the US Armed Forces as his “birther” vehicle.
On another subject – Ennealogic/Hypocrites & Heffalump Traps has a great post up of all the ethics charges in chart form. There are 4 pending still.
re: male role in cub rearing point in bear run-on twit
I guess mama bear “works harder than males” could have some subtle meaning. Perhaps a dig at Palin’s daughters ex-fiancee? Or maybe Palin’s husband isn’t up to some standard? Or an attempt to state a truth common to many species?
My original opinion was that Palin thinks _SHE_ works harder but upon reflection I realize that Palin would never be that blunt.
rebekkah: very good analysis – these are the types of messages the Palinbots were spewing during the Emmonak situation, too, also.
It’s heartening seeing more Americans catching onto the fact that this woman is “not to be trusted”, also. Now that she’s fractured the GOP maybe she can create some divisiveness in that little splinter of the far right corner that she currently clings to.
Divisiveness and Palin walk hand in hand, it’s inevitable.
right on Rebekka. and yes it most likely is referring to that. we know she doesn’t think the state or feds should do what others can do for themselves. it’s how she thinks, she’s a cold, calculating SOB.
Impeach her rear
has anyone spoke to jhop? is she okay?
CG@60 and Polly@66:
Re: Obama not being POTUS- WTF????
rebekkah@61:
Standard Republican rhetoric-”pull yourself up by your bootstraps”, “no handouts for you lazy unemployed, etc”, “I got mine and that’s all that matters”
That is also the first thing I thought when I read that.
AKM, your very good with a camera..Cool picture..thx.
SayNo@73:
I e-mailed jHop yesterday. Haven’t heard anything back. She said on the forum that she had to be in court. She’s back to work so it may be awhile before we hear from her again. Bummer. I would like to hear her take on Andree’s complaint.
You know, it escapes me:
How is it that Todd, the First and most ineffectual Dud, hasn’t divorced Palin, yet? I predict he will do so, soon.
Take his half and leave mamma bear 2 take care of hers…alone. Her tweets never seem to reference him in any positive Biblical roles. I’m pretty sure she thinks GOD is a He and recognizes that the Bible endorses a Patriarichal hierarchy.
How is this in accordance with her principles that she assumes the head of household position while married?
Something smells bad, here. Is Todd effiminate I wonder?
as an Alaskan I say NO NO NO to logging in the Tongass!!!! that decision is a huge let down… in the long run we would benefit from NOT logging because tourist DO NOT come here to see a treeless landscape?? And tourism will give back more over the long run.. I not like most alaskans believe legal gambling would be better for tourism then not only can they see Alaska’s beauty but might also spend to do some gambling while visiting here?? please fight to save the old growth forest for the sake of generations to come..
Palin’s Escape to Twitter
68 EyeOnYou,
My cousin always jokes with me that I have ESP. I referred to Parnell as a Palin Puppet and get ready for the roller coaster ride a few threads ago.
I listened to a video of Parnell saying that he would apply for the energy stimulus funds if that is what the lawmakers wanted but that he believed they should be using funds from the budget.
The budget already set, many cutbacks being made, programs cut — there are no funds in the budget allocated to this so where he figures it comes from it’s anybodies guess.
oooh, this is so-o-o-o spot on:
Susan Reimer of the Baltimore Sun:
“Reactions to Palin: Men Mystified, Women Mad:
“You can say there is a hypocrisy here — we never liked her and we’re mad that she quit. But women are angry. And the reason is not, as my Republican nephew contends, that we are all homely AP English chicks who hate the cheerleading captain on principle.
Sarah Palin’s good looks are part of the equation, but jealousy is not. We’re mad because Palin proved what we suspected all along: Looks matter.
Looks are a woman’s most important credential, even in the rarefied atmosphere of national politics. Put red high heels and red lipstick on a woman with a cute figure and run her out there and we promise, nobody will notice her mangled syntax or her poor sense of geography. …
Women are mad because whatever you thought of Palin’s politics, she was our horse in this race and she failed to cross the finish line — and not because of those politics. She bailed. And she bailed with a garbled torrent of excuses. She blamed the media. She blamed the haters.
Women are mad because Palin said she was being “altruistic, sincere and articulate,” but she was not. She was self-pitying, melodramatic and scatter-brained. She was all the things women have been trying to out-run since we got the vote. ”
May I use it for my holiday greeting cards?
I saw Gryphens post late last night about the recent ‘bear tweet’. And yes ….like ALL of her tweets they leave you scratching your head and asking yourself what is the underlying message. (from HER standpoint-nobody else cares ) All (about 90% ) these tweets are about making HERSELF feel bigger than she really is. The subject matter is usually pretty irrelevant to anybody getting them. They are just nonsense.
The whole tweet thing ” originally ” seemed to get started because people were sharing ‘ IMPORTANT ‘ information. ( Hers’ rarely fit this description) . In a sense, HER’s are more like doodling or scribbling on a piece of paper. Because she always has her Blackberry in hand…. anything that pops into her little brain (doodles) ends up out there. Truly bizarre.
But with this last one she has taken bizarre and kicked it up a notch.
A tweet=1 short thought or message. She NOW wants to use ‘ 3 ‘ tweets just to put a message out there…. WTH..? This is not some short story you are supposed to be sending. Again….she is bending the rules to the way she FEELS she is entitled to. She is more important…. so it is OK. She NEVER follows the Rules.
If the message was important… you say OK. But it’s just gibberish and ‘ doodling. I’d truly like to hear what some mental health professional would say. She HAS… a problem.
And when CNN , CBS or as someone noted earlier in the thread John McCain or some Politicians following her get a 3 tweet short story…. what do THEY think…?
I’m sure if you asked them you would get big grins and ” No comment”.
AKM, the picture you provide, is wonderful. The pictures you can see within the picture.
My view brings to mind Celtic Diva’s recent adventure to the Highland Games. In the top third of the stream, I see the head of a highland band member wearing the large black fur or fur like hat, the name which escapes me, with the chin strap under the nose, the mouth below. This picture doesn’t make him look all too happy for some reason I’ll never know.
I too have Scottish blood because from my maternal Grandmother. Could answer the reason of my ‘digging in’ and no budging on issues — that which my mother never had an ounce of. Must have skipped a generation!!
And if everyone is an expert, then nobody is, and the worst thing you can be in a society where everybody is an expert is, well, an actual expert.”
Wow.
Back in the day, when classifying people as jocks and nerds was a joke, I had an inkling that something like this might happen. “Revenge of the Jocks”
You can’t muscle, cheer, “cute”, distract, cajole or gossip, you’re way into credibility & expertise. Talking louder doesn’t make your case stronger.
Palin would be the homecoming queen, captain of the cheerleaders, – “and she plays hoops too” candidate.
That’ll get you votes in high school.
RE: Idiot America (listen to the Green Day CD of the same name)
It is sad that we don’t value education like they do in those commie socialist countries of old Europe. One can discuss history, philosophy, anyting really, with any cab driver in London.
I had signed up to follow Sarah, but I didn’t like inflating her numbers. Silly mama bear thinks that the people who follow her actually support her. I just blocked her. I can still follow, but I no longer am in her “follower count.” I checked the numbers when I did it. Sure enough, her number dropped to …84 and it had been …85. Perhaps if we all did that, she can get another “you are a truly a twit” message.
Please DON’T let the rapid news cycle and the abundance of Palin-related horrors let yesterday’s story about the federal moratorium placed on Alaska (re: medicaid waivers for elderly and disabled) slip from the radar! I posted this on the appropriate thread but am posting it here too:
Thanks for the many affirmations sent my way. I’m no hero….I didn’t volunteer for this (parenting a child with serious life-long disabilities like Trig but with a mustache and bipolar disorder as well) but no one is promised a perfect child. It is we who make the promise, to love and nurture and “make a way” for the children we bring to life. It is how we stand up to this challenge that speaks to who we are.
I’ve fallen short from time to time and still struggle with the challenges and sorrows. It’s been the torch I wish I could have passed on. It has burned me and left scars. I have found, somehow, the strength to do my best day to day, and to dampen my fears of the future. I haven’t found it to be the transformative spiritual journey that others have, and that may point to some deficiencies in me. But from this very average and well-populated place, people like me face these challenges of parenting, of love, every day.
I get outraged when the advocates of “small government” think I could and should tackle this unanticipated aspect of parenting without community/state/federal assistance. I would have gone under long ago without early learning programs, respite care, special education…..and now, in his young adulthood, home and community-based supports that give him a quality of life. I bring my best to my child; I use my “bootstraps” (….humor, commitment, ability to learn, friends, research, persistence through denial of services, building positive relationships with service providers, regrouping and renewing my efforts to build a life for him, advocacy…..) But I could NOT do it without help.
Thanks to each of you for the tax dollars that reached my family (in the form of services) and kept us from going under. Thanks to the personnel at state agencies and non-profit and direct service providers who kept (and keep) us from “falling through the cracks.” Thanks for the advocates who push these issues forward towards solutions that work, that recognize the needs and the humanity of “the least among us.” The alternatives are pretty grim.
A hundred years ago kids like mine who survived infancy were hidden away at home or in institutions, often abused and ignored and devalued until their early deaths. In Alaska, we shipped our children away to Morningside Hospital in Portland until the mid-twentieth century, when we built our own institution, Harborview in Valdez. In the mid-1990s, through extensive advocacy and during the governorship of Tony Knowles, a true advocate and humanitarian, Alaska took the step of closing Alaska’s only institution Harborview, in favor of serving this population in home and community based services to children, adults, and families. We thought we had turned the corner, that it was a brand new day for kids and families.
This remains the right thing to do, financially and morally. This year, in Texas, kids like mine placed in residential state schools were led to participate in “fight club” events for the amusement of the workers who were “caring” for them. People with disabilities are so very vulnerable in every way, yet they are best protected when they are included in the everyday life of families and communities – and the cost to serve them, even those with the most significant needs, is LESS that hospital, nursing home, or institutional care. That is why the medicaid waiver program exists, and why it should be expanded to meet the needs of disabled Alaskans at all stages of life.
It is beyond comprehension to me that under the Palin administration, despite warnings that this was a critical problem, the ball has been dropped in regards to the vital services provided by medicaid waivers, and that even the ability to APPLY for assistance has been halted. There is plenty of blame to go around, but what is important is that we fix this, now.
As I raised Max, I had this little motto on a scrap of paper taped to the inside of the bathroom cabinet. I focused on it every day while I brushed my teeth. It kept me going. I think it is the same thing that keeps Mudflatters and service providers and public servants who genuinely strive to make things work for those among us who need our active help and concern.
It reads like this: COURAGE does not necessarily roar. Sometimes it is the quiet voice at the end of the day that says, “I will try again tomorrow.”
That, pretty much, is all there is for any of us.
Sorry if this has been posted already but didn’t have time to peruse the comments yet.
An attorney for Sarah Palin has threatened to sueany news organization that reports the Alaska governor is stepping down because of a federal investigation. But attorney Thomas Van Flein might want to watch his step. If he files a defamation lawsuit that isn’t based on fact or law, he could wind up bringing a lawsuit upon himself–and Palin.
In fact, an ongoing case in Missouri shows how a poorly supported defamation lawsuit can wind up putting the plaintiff, and his or her attorney, in legal hot water.
“And her entry is beautifully timed. Thanks to the election of Barack Obama and a heavily Democratic Congress, the conservative industry is, despite the recession, experiencing boom times.”
A review of “the most recently available financial reports of some 250 conservative-advocacy groups and political-action committees; their combined gross revenues totaled more than $2 billion. And that’s only the major players, in just the nonprofit portion of the industry.”
Okay, first of all – it was the Moose Dropping Festival, okay? A fundraiser for the Talkeetna Historical Society. You could have done a li’l shoutout there for something worthy, but you didn’t.
Second – you actually took the time and trouble to spell out “Mt McKinley”, with capital letters, even. How odd; you can’t even spell out the word “Alaskans”.
Ahh, but we know what that is, don’t we? Oooh, you’re a clever girl, aren’tcha…
A dig at the Alaska State Legislature (especially Scott Kawaskai), a little high-five to your Ohio contituents, and a bold, brazen, in-your-face insult to all Alaska Natives, but specifically the Dena’ina Athabascan, whose homeland comprises all of the greater Anchorage/Mat Su metropolitan area and north beyond Denali National Park. All in one little twitter. Fabulous.
You know who they are, right, Sarah? Wasilla is in Dena’ina country; you can see them from your house. You know that big convention center across from your office, the Denaina Center? Yeah, _that_ one…
And you do know, right, that the first offical summit in 1913 was by Walter Harper, an Athabascan native? [Published in the New York Times on June 1, 1914]. He was the Alaskan sherpa; he was the guy who went forward to cache supplies for Harry Karsten/Hudson Stuck’s expedition.
His niece, Flora Jane Harper, was the first Alaska Native graduate from University of Alaska.
How about a shoutout to him and his family instead of a kick in the face?
Well done, you!
History of Denali National Park and Preserve
Efforts to preserve the lands near Denali began with the establishment of Mount McKinley National Park on February 26, 1917. Ironically, little of Denali was included in the original park. This was corrected by establishing Denali National Monument on December 1, 1978, however the name Mount McKinley remained. With passage of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) on December 2, 1980, part of the naming controversy was addressed by the joining of Park and Monument into the Denali National Park and Preserve.
Alaska’s Legislature voted to formally change the name Mount McKinley to Denali in 1975. The Alaska Board of Geographic Names moved to revert the mountain’s name to Denali after formation of Denali National Park and Preserve in 1980. Support for the change was found with the United States Board of Geographic Names, but action by the agency was and has been blocked by Congressional members from McKinley’s home state of Ohio.
Denali and Ohio Partisan Politics
Efforts by the United States Board of Geographic Names to correct Denali’s name were originally blocked by Ohio Representative Ralph Regula. The Board is bound by policy not to address a geographic name change while any bill concerning the subject of the modification is pending in Congress. Regula made it a regular practice to introduce legislation every two years to retain the name McKinley. Though the bill would never pass, it always left the issue pending, thus blocking action by the Board of Geographic Names.
Representative Regula has retired from Congress, but unfortunately Representatives Tim Ryan and Betty Sutton have decided to take over where Regula left off. In response to their efforts, an editorial in the Anchorage Daily News offers tongue in cheek to rename a few of the geographic features found in Ohio.
Most Alaskans believe outside interests with little connection to the land should not be able to impose their own names on Alaska’s geographic features. People here will continue to know the mountain as Denali, which should be the only right course of action for Ohio’s Representatives.
Clipped from ADN article:
“They just don’t get it: Denali is the name the first peoples of Alaska gave our nation’s tallest peak, Denali is the name it deserves and no amount of Ohio intransigence can make “McKinley” sound or be right for the mountain. So how about this for a deal, Buckeyes?
Pro sports teams sell naming rights to their stadiums. Why don’t you sell us naming rights to Denali?
C’mon, you two, let’s talk. What’s your price? Betty, you want a lifetime supply of fresh salmon? Done. Tim — Moose nugget jewelry for the missus? It’s yours. VIP tour of ANWR? That and a free case of mosquito repellent await the both of you.
If you’re not going to let us have Denali, we’ll have no choice but to get Ohio’s highest peak renamed after one of Alaska’s great public figures. Campbell Hill (elevation 1,550) isn’t much by Alaska standards, but it would still be a fine honor for a suitable Alaskan.
The name “Mount Palin” comes to mind. …”
http://www.adn.com/opinion/view/story/648733.html
~~~
HJR 15, Representative Kawaski [Thanks for honoring indigenous Alaskans, by the way.]
“The intent of HJR 15 is to rechristen Mount McKinley its rightful Athabascan name, Denali, meaning “The High One.” The highest peak on the continent is widely recognized as Denali, but officially renaming it would properly respect the mountain’s history and the culture of Alaska Natives.
Should the mountain forever maintain the name of a president who never visited Alaska, a name which the mountain received in 1896 when McKinley had just been named the Republican candidate, the mountain’s current name would forever linger as a reminder of the usurpation of the state’s right to name geographical landmarks. Having made several efforts to rename the mountain since its designation as Mount McKinley, it is clear the people of Alaska generally share this aspiration.
I urge you to support HJR 15 for the sake of Alaskan culture.”

“Here’s a fun history lesson: For centuries, the native Tanaina Indians have been calling the mountain “Denali,” which translates into “the high one.” That’s also what most Alaskans call it–including the state government. But due to the politics of geography, silly regional pride, a dash of cultural imperialism, and–believe it or not–monetary policy, the federal government and most of the rest of America still officially calls the thing Mt. McKinley.
That’s because for reasons that aren’t all that clear, the federal government allowed a gold prospector named William Dickey to name the mountain in 1896. Dickey wasn’t the first human to see the mountain, or the first white person, or even the first American. He missed the first achievement by thousands of years, the second by hundreds of years, and the third by decades. He apparently was merely the first person to come to Washington to request an official name (and write about his Alaskan experience in East Coast newspapers). Fortuitous timing took care of the rest.
…
“Regula’s bill has never been voted on–it never gets out of committee. But merely introducing it is enough to ensure that America’s tallest mountain continues to bear the name of a forgettable, war-mongering, tariff-loving president from Ohio who never got within a thousand miles of the magnificent thing. It’s also an annual slap in the face to the indigenous Alaskans who, let’s face it, have endured more than their fair share of kicking around over the years.”

How ethical is it for Ivy Frye to be twittering and directing her messages @ a certain site? All day. Every day. From the Gov’s office. Where she is an employee so essential that she had to go along with the GINO to compaign.
But of course, they are not in contact with GINO’s office. Oh no! They just tweet back and forth all day, no e-mail records to request, just a very public record on the web! http://twitter.com/ivyfrye
Twitterpated doesn’t begin to describe it.
Wanted to share this article. I am quite proud that this man is a citizen of my state, although he hasn’t always been.
It appears Alaskans can be proud of him too (although I haven’t done the research on his time there). I pasted a variety of different parts of the article, but not in it’s entirety, but wanted to share because not only do we need more people like him in the world, he was once a member of Alaska’s government, which I think was during the 70’s. I found a pdf document from 1979 that shows him working under then Gov. Hammond here http://www.akrdc.org/newsletters/1979/april.pdf but that is the extent of what I’ve tried to find about his time in Alaska.
The article is definitely a must read.

Citizen McConkey: a one-man battle against state’s gay marriage ban
Bill McConkey’s street cred as a straight man, as he finds himself reminding people these days, is ironclad.
The topic keeps coming up because McConkey, a father of seven and grandfather of eight, is the man behind the pending challenge to Wisconsin’s constitutional ban on gay marriage that will be heard this fall by the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
Adding to the incongruity of his challenge is McConkey’s deep Christian faith, conservative leanings and, until recently, long association with the Republican Party.(HAVE TO READ THE ARTICLE TO SEE WHAT CAUSED HIM TO LEAVE THE PARTY, but I bet u can guess)
So when faced with what he saw as an egregious, unconstitutional assault on the fundamental rights of Wisconsin’s gay citizens — and a personal attack on his own lesbian daughter — McConkey filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn the ban: “I was outraged as a scholar and a professor but I was energized because it was my daughter.”
Over the years he’s worn many hats. Among them: professor; owner of an advertising company; analyst in the National Security Division of the Office of Management and Budget under former Presidents Johnson and Richard M. Nixon; director of the Division of Energy and Power Development for the state of Alaska; legislative analyst for the Florida Senate Committee on Higher Education; lay Methodist preacher; judge for the World Boxing Association; club boxer; and Illinois field director for Nixon’s re-election campaign in 1972.
Caption under one of the photos from the article:In the early 1980s Bill McConkey judged world title boxing matches for the World Boxing Association and fought in club fights in Alaska, where he was living at the time. He set up a ring in the office of the advertising firm he owned so he could train. ‘I wasn’t very good,’ he says, ‘but I thoroughly enjoyed it.’
Any AK Mudpups ever heard or him or remember the name?
About the Legistalker website ( thanks LiLadyNY) . I t brought up mine as well. Will it also bring up Governors…?
Does someone have the zip code for $arah…?
And would you use the Capital zip code ( Juneau ) or HER un-official residence in Wasilla.
Can someone use their Alaska zip code and tell us what they find…? Curious?
I forgot to mention your inaugural reception at the Heritage Center – your very first official ‘First Family’ appearance that we paid for.
Remember that? Athabascan Elders and Native leaders honored you and your children. They gave you gifts, including an Athabascan Chief’s necklace.
Think you could return the honor by calling the mountain its rightful name – Denali, “the great one”.
Hi Pups!
Word of caution! PLEASE obey speed limits!
We had an unbelievable tanker explosion here in Detroit last night on I-75 (main N/S route which goes all the way to FL) and 9 Mile Road (secondary E/W route) that took out the overpass and has all directions closed indefinitely.
Some yahoo was doing 70 around a 50MPH curve on the freeway.
Said yahoo should be forced to pay for ALL the damage. It’s going to cost $84,000 alone just to get the fallen bridge off the freeway! They already have a contract and cranes are moving in.
Said yahoo should probably spend a few days behind bars, too. You know… just to get him to slow down a bit.
Miraculously, no one died or was even seriously injured. Apparently, also miraculously, only three vehicles involved. Amazing, given it was on the freeway at high speeds with little room to suddenly maneuver yourself around an “event” (we have embankments at that portion of the freeway, so you can’t just go off road).
That said, take a look at some of the stunning photos of this event here: http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/20067687/detail.html Check out the upper left of the screen for “hot shots” (no pun intended, they’ve always called viewer submissions “hot shots”). If you get the slide show on that click, ignore the last 30 or so shots… they are random shots of other events that somehow were included.
Folks were saying it was “9/11Scary”. You hear a huge, thunderous explosion, see a wild fire ball, and more thick black smoke than you’ve ever seen before. You don’t know what happened. You’re trapped on a freeway without exit and watch the bridge ahead of you fall to the ground.
I’d have pooped my pants! LITERALLY. And way more “LITERALLY” than SP’s oyster thing.
I went over this morning to take a look (about 5 miles from my house). MUCH worse in person.
OOOH!!! It was just on MSNBC, but what’s her face really minimized it.

To mother Who Thinks: I was very moved and touched by your beautiful post. You have compassion, humanity, understanding and strength. In our community, we are fortunate to have some places available for young adults who need to find a way to support themselves (or contribute to their support). A local supermarket has some of these kids working bagging groceries, returning goods to the shelf or rounding up stray shopping carts. There is always somebody with them, a lovely woman who has infinite patience. She repeats her directions to her charge slowly, kindly because these seemingly easy tasks are not so easy for them.
There is also a facility in a nearby suburb that employees a number of people with different disabilities to do simple tasks like rolling posters to put in mailing tubes, packing gift baskets, or other jobs that require alot of handwork. The company was doing some work for me, and on my first visit they showed me around and explained how they worked. Someone put the person on the local train om the morning, and the company picked them up at the station in a mini-van. The process was reversed so the workers could return home. There were signs posted, reminding people to take their medication, or if they were feeling angry, step away from the breakable things.
Despite these lovely facilities, you open my eyes to the fact that it is not an easy road, even with the best of circumstances. And, to have any health care facilities, of any kind denied, is a crime! Electronic and internet hugs to you!
Legislators are meeting in special session August 10th. Give them the political support they need to overturn Palin’s rejection of $28 million in federal energy stimulus funds.
Alaska can use these dollars to put people to work and Alaskans can benefit from energy savings through efficiency and conservation measures implemented with these dollars. Sean Parnell has said he will accept the decision of the legislators.

Mother Who Thinks,
I want to thank you for sharing your story. My son works for a company that provides help for those who are able to live on their own with help. He is the caregiver who helps get him ready for his job, drives him to work, stays with him in case he needs assistance there and waits with him until the next shift arrives.
I have always been proud of my son for choosing to help those who need help. He has ignored the caustic remarks and hateful comments made by others about his chosen work. (babysitter for adult babies, etc.) He loves his job and loves “his guy”. I have never looked at it from your perspective until today. I think you must be one of few really great moms my son speaks of in connection to work. They are the ones who did the hard work and raised their children with love and strength and got them to this place in life where my son can than help.
I sincerely hope that Alaska can fix the broken programs that they have now so that others may benefit. I also hope that those who cry for less government would step bk and look at what can be done when programs are run correctly. And take the time to appreciate all life, at every stage. Thank you for making me even prouder of my son, we are both blessed.
Governor Palin’s attorney, Thomas Van Flein, responded to the [ethics complaint] dismissal saying, “The board has appropriately determined that a complaint must have a factual basis of some type and that complaints based on pure speculation are not proper. This most recent complaint demonstrates the problem with the system, and the manner in which it can be abused.”
< rant >
The nonsense rolls on and on, and I’m getting tired of hearing it. When the Personnel Board demonstrates that it can quickly and easily dismiss an ethics complaint that is absent merit – something I think we can all agree it should be able to do – how is that a demonstration of the system’s vulnerability to abuse rather than a demonstration of the system’s ability to appropriately address abusive complaints and complaints that may have been filed by well-intentioned but ill-informed complainants?
The obvious shortcoming of the system is the inherent conflict of interest, i.e., the public’s legitimate interest in ethical government v. their own legitimate self-interest, that members of the Personnel Board have when they are called upon to process complaints filed against the Governor – the person who holds the power to remove them from their jobs or otherwise exact retribution. That is a serious structural flaw, and it results in a process that is unfair to the members of the Board, to the public, and to the Governor, as it unavoidably casts the shadow of suspicion on both the Board and the Governor when any finding by the Board can be perceived as favorable to the Governor. All parties deserve a process that provides fairness and closure, and those can only result from a process that leads to results that are free from the residue of suspicion that is systemic under the current structure of the process.

From Firedoglake:
White House Calls Kyl’s Bluff on Canceling Stimulus, Republicans Whine About It
By: Blue Texan Thursday July 16, 2009 10:30 am
Last week, Jon Kyl (WATB-AZ) wrote:
It’s not a surprise that a recent Rasmussen poll found that 45 percent of Americans want to cancel the rest of the stimulus spending. I agree.
He then went on MTP and said the same thing. So the White House took him up on it.
No fewer than four Cabinet secretaries wrote to Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer — also a Republican — to ask her if she agreed with Kyl that it was time to turn off the state’s stimulus spigot. “If you prefer to forfeit the money we are making available to your state, as Sen. Kyl suggests, please let me know,” wrote Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. For good measure, he attached a three-page addendum listing each of the Arizona projects paid for by the $521 million the state is getting.
And what happens when you smack bullies in the face? They cry like babies.
“The governor is hopeful that these federal Cabinet officials are not threatening to deny Arizona citizens the portion of federal stimulus funds to which they are entitled,” her spokesman said in a statement.
I guess we’re to assume that Kyl meant he wanted the stimulus cut off everywhere but Arizona. Just like Cantor. Just like Boehner.
How ’bout some cheese with that whine, Jon?
It’s unfortunate that President Obama and his administration seem unwilling to debate the merits of the stimulus bill and acknowledge its shortcomings. Instead, they have resorted to coordinated political attacks with the Democratic National Committee and the politicization of departments of government by using cabinet secretaries to issue thinly veiled threats to the Governor and the people of Arizona.
So which is it, Senator? You want to cancel the stimulus or don’t you?
Put up or shut up.

AK, maybe this is a model for you to follow.

That is an interesting take. The “perfect marriage” does seem odd. From the little I know of the Palin side, the family is dysfunctional. Didn’t Todd raise his half bro and sis or something like that? The bro has a violent past? Sis is an addict. I was wondering if Todd’s attraction to Sarah as head of family gave him a father he never had as a child? I don’t know that he can leave her, there is something very needy about him. He may have secret ways he feels he gets back at her. On the other hand, he has reminded me of that poor Jon and Kate dud. Jon was willing to take the abuse for years. Now they have lots ‘o $$$$ and he made his escape.

Open question to all the Alaskan Mudpups…..
With the high cost of fuel and the expense it takes to transport it to some of these out of the way or rural places…. Is anybody using Solar or wind power during the Summer months to reduce that cost. We keep reading that the Summer has 21 hours of daylight…. and its Free.
I would even think that the Energy Funds $arah down would apply toward energy conservation or Green type applications.
Is Solar used in Alaska…?

from Huffpo, I think someone has posted the link on page 3 so I won’t repost. but it’s a good article by a guy who should know, he says she’s no expert.
It’s titled “The Nation’s Energy Expert Speaks Out on Climate…Not”
Dr. Chameides is dean of Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He blogs regularly at thegreengrok.com.
(this is the last paragraph)
“Gotta Stop Emitting CO2 If You Want to Get to Alaskan Oil and Gas
And here is the greatest irony. Melting permafrost is inhibiting the extraction of oil and gas in Alaska! To extract oil and gas you must be able to move big, heavy exploration and extraction machinery over the land, and you can’t do that in Alaska if the permafrost melts — because you are left with a mucky, unstable mess. Over the past 30 years the number of days that oil and gas exploration and extraction equipment can operate in Alaska has decreased from more than 200 days per year to 100 days.
Governor, if you want to be able to “tap the resources that God created right underfoot” in Alaska, you’d better get behind the president’s cap-and-trade energy plan.”
@honesty inGov:
I would even think that the Energy Funds $arah down would apply toward energy conservation or Green type applications.
=================================================
I am sure this is true. Just yesterday I was reading about how there is so much money now for weatherization and alt energy thanks to the stimulus funds, that states are short of customers for the projects!! That money for weatherization that Palin refused goes toward repairing/improving houses of low-income families AT NO COST TO THEM!!! To increase the pool of candidates they increased the income criteria to 200% of the poverty line. And some States have no people on lists to get this FREE service that will save them money! And creates jobs because it pays to train people to do this work.
These funds also go towards super low-cost loans (2.5%) interest for energy saving efforts for homes and businesses– everything from buying new appliances, to replacing windows, insulating buildings, to installing solar, thermal and other alternative energy saving technologies. DP and I have been wanting to replace some old windows on a sunporch and then insulate it, but haven’t had the money. Just found all this out yesterday and we are going to look at one of these loans.
Incredible that this would be turned down!!!
I have just seen on TV ads from another healthcare special interest group out of the US by the name of PatientsUnitedNow.com The same as cprights.org – Conservatives for Patients Rights. At least by it appearing in Canada it allows for Canadians to speak out on it. I would think these ads appear in US
The testimonial by one Shona Holmes about a brain tumor is suspect in that searching further info, a panel she appears on with another patient beeatching and two doctors, who are challenging Ontario’s Ban on Private healthcare options. This would allow for private health clinics thereby setting up a two tier system. Does Holmes have an agenda — I honestly believe so as someone with a brain tumor, loosing vision gets treated. If her family doctor failed in not pushing for an appointment due to the situation, she seems to have a mouth to talk up for the two tier system so what silenced her then — her agenda IMO.
I am searching for info on her. Chances are she was also paid as she appears on numerous sites.
On cprights.org, the Dr talking wait times, is the owner of private clinics in western provinces therefore financially benefits from the failure of the Canadian system. Each province governs their own system, which a province allows the two tier. (cprights.org is Conservatives for Patients’ Rights as mentioned in last para)
To hear a video of people in Toronto talking about their care, here is a link. They are listening to an ad from CPR and debunking them. The woman at about 6 mins, speaks pre healthcare and is somewhat similar to what I mentioned yesterday I think about co-payments. Our system has changed along the way. The link is 11 minutes but at about 8 mins in it then has nothing to do with healthcare but the online news site seems to be looking for membership & a vid available – totally unrelated.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88KmmR4d5Ig
A site in Chicago that answers questions about universal health care is pnhp.org As I can only put one link, put the www in front of it which is the same of all the others
Recently, Republicans have called Canadian doctors to testify before Congress about long waiting times and Conservatives for Patients’ Rights, funded by former hospital CEO Rick Scott, has aired an ad featuring horror stories of medical malpractice in Canada. aka BS!!!! I’m sure they called the drs that appeared in the ads. They are no different that those in private clinics in US — Greedy.

Thanks Canadian Neighbor. PUN is really creepy, and they are getting Canadian doctors to come down and write editorials in big papers and make TV ads. And people are sucking it up. I got a letter from one of my Senators yesterday, in response to my contacting his office about health care and he just parroted all the PUN talking points. I was really pissed off and wrote his an angry e-mail pointing out that I knew exactly where his talking points were coming from and they were lies. Even our other Senator, the only “Democrat” in NE, Ben Nelson (gag) is stalling the health care debate. Before he was governor and senator he was a career insurance industry big-wig. sorry for my rant, I am just disgusted.
from Jessy Ventura……
“I don’t think she was put under any more media scrutiny than I was … My children were attacked in Minnesota,” he said. “Everything I did was put under the microscope. The point is, Larry, you don’t quit. When you make an obligation and you take an oath, doesn’t it mean anything anymore?”
If Palin ever runs for higher office, Ventura said, she certainly won’t get his vote.
“I would never vote for her, because if it gets too hot in the kitchen, she’s liable to quit.”
@austintx:
you sure do have some screwballs there. and like the article says, it could have broader implications on the national educational system because publishers cater to the large texan market.

nebraska mudflatter,
Thanks for the link tp the Denver Post. I’ve bookmarked it now.
I hope this isn’t a repeat, haven’t had time to scan all of the messages.
I received this today from National Parks Conservation Association. Please send Ken Salazar and others this message. Senator Lisa Murkowski (if you live in Alaska) Senator Mark Begich (if you live in Alaska)
Protect Lands Adjacent to Katmai, Lake Clark from Industrial Mining
One million acres of prime wolf, bear, and salmon habitat adjacent to Lake Clark and Katmai National Parks could be opened to new mining claims with the stroke of a pen. Closed to mining since 1971, these wild Alaska lands are integral to Bristol Bay’s salmon-supporting ecosystem that is anchored by these two grand national parks. A recommendation from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to lift this mineral closure and expand a modern day gold rush was issued in the last days of the Bush Administration and we need your help to send this bad idea back to the drawing board. Send a letter to Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar asking him to deny the BLM’s request and protect the precious natural wonders near Lake Clark and Katmai National Parks.

Most importantly, YWAM and Campus Crusade For Christ are part of a militant stream that has erupted out of Pentecostal and charismatic Christianity, which fielded the GOP vice presidential candidate in the 2008 election: Sarah Palin. Campus Crusade maintains a sub-ministry that focuses it evangelizing efforts on Pentagon members and politicians and staffers on Capital Hill.

from Center of Biological Diversity…….interesting. Makes ya wonder about that blog thingy.
“Suit Pending to Keep Pesticides Out of Polar Bears
To stop the silent crisis of pesticide pollution building in the Arctic, last week the Center for Biological Diversity warned the Environmental Protection Agency we’ll sue over its failure to protect polar bears and their habitat from toxic chemicals. Pesticides approved for U.S. use by the EPA eventually end up in the Arctic thanks to various atmospheric, oceanic, and biological pathways. And each time a chemical takes a step up the food chain, its strength is magnified; thus, in the Arctic, pesticides reach some of their greatest concentrations in polar bears, the region’s sovereign predators. Under the Endangered Species Act, the EPA is supposed to evaluate pesticides’ impacts on protected species before those pesticides are registered and approved — but the agency hasn’t acknowledged their effect on federally threatened polar bears, not to mention the entire Arctic ecosystem.
Considering that polar bears remain unprotected from their greatest threats due to a bad rule enacted under Bush — and left in place by President Barack Obama — the species now needs all the protection it can get from other dangers. (Though of course, we’re also in court to save the bear from global warming and oil and gas development.) This is the first legal challenge to pesticide registrations due to their impacts on the Arctic. ”
“The poisoning of the Arctic is a silent crisis that threatens not just the polar bear, but the entire Arctic ecosystem, as well as the people and communities that live within it,” said Rebecca Noblin, with the Center for Biological Diversity in Anchorage. “Because the polar bear sits at the top of the food pyramid, if we do what is necessary to protect the bear from pesticides, we will also be protecting the Arctic ecosystem and the people that depend upon it.”

nebraska mudflatter….
You mentioned earlier that you were going to be checking into loans for doing some window replacement..?
I bought an older home (out her in CA ) and it had the ‘original’ single pane windows. I used money from equity in the home to replace all of them throughout about 5 years ago. They slipped the replacements (made to size at the factory ) into the same frames and were done in about 5 hours. If I remember correctly it was about 103 or 105 degrees that day.
With the new windows you can stand right next to them and not feel any heat. WHAT a difference. So much more comfortable…. and better looking.
If you or people you know can get low cost loans and are thinking about some sort of solar energy as well check out companies that can use these ‘converter boxes’. If hooked to a grid the excess (if you have any ) can be sent back to the electric company and you are paid for it. ( may not apply to all companies )
I would think some of these Green energy type rebates would apply if people go solar as far as paying for the units upfront. Here is a link.

Amy@171:
I believe this is the proposed Pebble Mine that they are talking about.
You know, the one that SP took her “governor’s hat off” to vote against the clean water initiative that would have put restrictions on them.
Husband says he was in a safety class where the instructor pointed out that if the dam they are proposing to build for this project ever failed, the water released would actually wipe out two of the Aleutian islands hundreds of miles away. He refused to make any political statements to the class when asked, but instead stated (I am paraphrasing) “If you are thinking in terms of safety, stay far away from this project”.
And that isn’t even mentioning environmental impact.
honestyingov:
My husband and I have been looking into the solar/wind alternatives for a few years now. Until now it has been prohibitively expensive for us. I have, however, heard a rumor that someone in Homer has some new solar panels that can capture energy from ambient sunlight that allowed him to heat water to 110* year-round. I have more research to do but that would be awesome as it is the temp required to maintain in-floor heating such as we have.
Wind, where we are, is a bit harder. It blows but it is inconsistent.
All of these things are subject to some problems with the freezing and snow issues in the winter (how to keep solar panels defrosted, etc). Solar panels would probably need to be mounted vertically…
Wish I knew an alternative energy engineer who could help me out.
hey everybody go sign this letter, it will be sent to Ken Salazar, if you live in Alaska, your letter will also be sent to Lisa Murkowski, and Mark Begich.

The reason I was asking about these Rural areas or Villages that have no way to hook up to an existing Grid and yet they have totally open space for Solar and or I saw these cylindrical type wind vanes/turbines that are not those big high-in-the sky propellers that obstruct the landscape as well. ( not so obtrusive and blend in)The vertical cylindricals one would seem to work in lighter wind… but not sure. Back in Jan. or Feb. some news show was showing these former auto workers who were laid off making these cylindrical types. I was looking for an online story but this is the only one found so far. I have a link to the 20/20 story as well but can’t attach two links. (The link to the ‘ solar converters’ is my # 178 post)

Took a little trip into the past for fun. This news article http://community.adn.com/adn/node/116387?page=1
is an ADN story about Palin responding to mayors trying to contact her. The story is dated Jan. 23, 2008. One of the comments says:
—
And for those of you who think it’s just the Mayors who are whining, you’re mistaken. The tourism meeting in Juneau expected the Governor to come speak to their luncheon of 600 people. They had her on the agenda. She did not show. Not only did she not show, but she didn’t call and say she wouldn’t show. No one could get ANY answer from her office.
—
Ahhh, sounds familiar.
That picture is amazing! Thanks for sharing.
I’m watching David Shuster (Countdown) and he just said Tina Fey has been nominated for an Emmy for portraying $arah Palin. LMAO!!! I foresee some future skits when SNL comes off hiatus.
As a follow up to AKM’s story here yesterday about the Healthcare scandal it would seem that Gryphen has been able to identify the person in charge of making sure everything ran smoothly. And that would be Bill Hogan as Commissioner of the Department of Health and Social Services…. who was hand-picked by $arah. Who ALSO just happens to be from Wasilla and the non-profit he ran in in Wasilla got a $500,000 grant when $arah was Mayor there. ( and probably goes to $arah’s church)
Can we say BOTH $arah and Bill Hogan have some responsibility here…?
Does anyone have his email…?
And when will Puppet Parnell step up and fire this Guy. How about it Sean?
Show everybody that you are willing to fix the problem.
I think it would be great if Shannyn could arrange to have Beverly Wooley, who was fired by GINO as a guest to come on her Show.
caligrl –
Got both of your pm’s…….look’s like her to me.

greytdog requested a repost of something I put over on Margaret & Helen’s blog:
@ greytdog
Yep, I’m sure taking advantage for once for the long period between posts @ M&H’s!
I’ve been enjoying Syrin from Wasilla’s blog, her current post is a reprint from the Alaska Standard, submitted by one of Sherry’s readers. It may have been an article, or a comment, from an Alaskan evangelical.
http://syrin.vox.com/library/post/not-so-fast.html
“Like many Evangelical Alaskans, I was overjoyed when the Governor decided to run for office three years ago. Unlike most Evangelicals, I got off the bus before the general election because it became clear to me in studying what Sarah said about business and fiscal matters, that she lacked the understanding and finesse to secure a gas line for the State.
…And it’s not only that she lied about Troopergate and abused her power of office, she has governed these past eight months with disinterest and vitriol. She seems much more interested in creating dramas and flat out fights with with another branch of government – the legislative branch (think the Juneau Senate seat fiasco and the Wayne Anthony Ross for AG debacle and the won’t/will/won’t/will mess with the stimulus money, for starters).
This is not the character of a person I trust, let alone admire. If Sarah has done anything the past year, she has shot her credibility with me and a host of others in this State – those who care enough to pay attention.
The lies just don’t stop coming. When she angrily denounced Levi Johnson on national news saying it was “over my dead body” that Levi would be living with Bristol under her roof – anyone who knows anything about this situation in the Valley knows that she was telling a flat-out, straight-up, blatant-as-you-please LIE.
Maybe that doesn’t matter to you, Mr. Grenn. But it matters to me. To me and to the vast majority of Evangelicals in Alaska who I know. The heady days of Governor Palin knowing she could count on the Evangelical vote in this state are over. Why? Because things like credibility and character really do matter. Dan Jarrell is right. I, and thousands like me, have done the serious work of “knowing the character” of our governor. And it has been sad and scary and disheartening what we have learned about her.
But she has little to fear – the uninformed Evangelicals of America have no idea who she really is, what lengths she’ll go to to advance herself (I would say “her agenda” here, except that it’s become clear Sarah has no agenda other than herself). “
honestyinGov,
I did a search yesterday and found the ADN and all the other announcement links on Bill Hogan.
He was put into the permanent position in July 2008. He was in the acting position since May 2008. Therefore, he’s been basically in charge for about a year. This issue sounds like it stems back further than that so in my opinion, I wouldn’t be hanging it all on Hogan if it is from before. He’s definitely responsible but if time is before 2008, you have to walk it further back than that.

I don’t think Tiny Fey wants to ever see Palin again in her life!! She probably has to wear a disguise to go out — may actually hide!!!
honestyinGov- I live in Eastern Washington and I happen to like the tall turbines with there big white propellers going round and round when the slightest wind blows, there all over the hills here and its better than looking at bare hills with only sagebrush…we also have nuclear energy and hydro from the dams on the Columbia River, our electric bills are very low in this area. Those small wind turbines should be great, especially in those villages along the windy coastlines in Alaska.
best photo yet, AKM!
hubby found at least three faces, plus a spaceship and a starburst.
uh oh….scientology?
o, I’m watching Pat Buchanan on Rachel Maddow, and he’s explaining why white men should be running everything…my head is exploding….
CN #192: I bet you are right. She probably hates even being associated with her. They just did a montage of all the funniest moments during the campaign and it was hilarious.

I spent nine years in the Tri-Cities, and back in the 70′s when alternative energy sources got attention (under Carter), that area was rejected for experimental wind generating projects b/c we too often had too much wind for the turbines. What is the extent of wind power development up there now?
Water totem..a powerful image..and is not water the binding-agent..for us, for all life? To touch water..to see water..and listen..is..to heal.
Buchanan on Rachel…I can’t say it enough…this man is an embarrassment to all mankind…he’s a moron and an racist….anybody with a TV show should NOT give this fu*k*ed-up animal a platform! Shame on Chris Mathews for not putting this “friend” in his place and KUDOS to Rachel for standing up to this idiot, even though he doesn’t get it or didn’t listen to reason. OMG!
@ Lainey: I love how Rachel remains respectful and patient while Buchanan gets so out of breath and high pitched.
@ds55…….I know, for real….she’s so quick……I wish I had her skills
Right now on Rachel , Jeff Sharlet just called the house on “C” street a “Fundamentalist Frat House”………bunch of extra-marital boinking going on there. His book “The Family” sounds like a must read.

@ austintx: Is that C-Street House still open? I would tell any congressman’s wife to never let her husband live there, woo-boy!
Rachel was so good at respectfully cleaning his (Boss Hogg Buchanan’s) clock. She is so right and he looked like an a$$ in that interview. I too, wish I had her wit and skills. The clarity and intellect in what she says is truly awesome and her delivery is spot on.
Some of us were talking about alternative sources of energy: wind or solar.
I found this statement one one of these websites.
———————–
Under United States law, a federal-level investment tax credit (ITC) is available to help consumers purchase small wind turbines for home, farm, or business use. Owners of small wind systems with 100 kilowatts (kW) of capacity or less can receive a credit for 30% of the total installed cost of the system.
Current Status: The ITC, written into law through the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, is available for equipment installed from October 3, 2008 through December 31, 2016. The value of the credit is now uncapped, through the ARRA of 2009. Another provision of the ARRA is a new cash grant program through the U.S. Treasury that certain taxpayers may elect to use in lieu of claiming the 30% federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC). However, this grant is NOT applicable to residential consumers (as defined in Internal Revenue Code Section 25D), but rather only to entities as defined in Sections 45 and 48, which, generally, are businesses.
———————————-
It also states: … “Many other states have additional funding and grant opportunities. For state by state details on all renewable energy and energy efficiency incentives for the USA please visit:” ( there is an active link on this webpage also that tells you about state by state info)

From AKM previous post: Sorrry very late here.
The administration is spending an awful lot of time on the upcoming ballot initiative that will address parental notice and consent for anyone under the age of 18 who is seeking to terminate a pregnancy. Here is the initiative language with recent changes in language underlined. parental20involvement20initiative1
Two years ago, the Alaska Supreme Court on a 3-2 ruling said that a parental consent law was unconstitutional because it transferred the right to make such an important decision to a parent or a judge. They also stated that a parental notification law, however, might be constitutional.
Please do NOT let us forget AND let this be forgotten , isn’t palin supposed to appoint 2/3??? judges. WHEN will this happen. If she appoints another, friend /school mate/ Church MEMBER. How will her appointment change earlier ruling on this very important issue.
