Discussing the 8 cent gas tax…

  19. 19
    Lee323No Gravatar says:

    @ UK Lady #7
    ———————————
I agree. I think the Medicare/Medicaid scandal is one of the big reasons Palin quit so abruptly. She’s leaving a huge mess for Parnell (with the fallout from the lawsuits, hundreds of deaths, 4-5 month moratorium on new sign-ups etc). Since she instituted a hiring freeze that impacted staffing for this program, she directly exacerbated the problem, not to mention that this was an ongoing problem that she ignored/neglected.

I personally think that Palin didn’t want to be the “face” of government in a situation where the results of her misguided “fiscal conservatism” is directly measured in dead elderly and disabled people, multiple lawsuits, and perceptions of gross mismanagement. As Shannyn said….Palin is a coward. She runs from problems instead of rolling up her sleeves and working, especially problems she helped to create.

IMO, this situation needs more national exposure. Her latest giddy tweets lead me to believe that she thinks she’s escaped the brunt of negative publicity on this tragic and deplorable situation.

  20. 20

LOL Injuneau- Thanks, I’m a bit dramatic.

  21. 21
    Rob in CaNo Gravatar says:

BIll previously discussed the importance of having building codes for weatherization, because it cost much more to retrofit a house than to build it energy efficient in the first place. Palin turned down 30 million, and Alaska has already put in place a $300 million program for retrofitting!

  22. 22
    Rob in CaNo Gravatar says:

Bill is discussing the lack of competition, as an explanation for high gas prices. he has legislation to address this issue of price gouging.

  23. 23
    Rob in CaNo Gravatar says:

When the 8 cent tax is cancelled, the price doesn’t change…the gas company just makes 8 cents more!

  40. 40
    Rob in CaNo Gravatar says:

Next caller talks about post office, how it is less efficient than private shippers. He has private insurance, and apparently thinks that is better.
He believes government drives up the cost of health care. He sees that cash costs for care are cheaper than insurance costs. He believes this is because of gov regulation….

  41. 41
    Rob in CaNo Gravatar says:

Shannyn points out the result of deregulation of the stock market…he argues thaat the gov forced banks to give loans to unqualified people….Shannyn points out banks made the loans because they could turn around and sell them. He argues that was Fannie Mae etc…..Shannyn ends it..

  42. 42
    Rob in CaNo Gravatar says:

Next caller points out Post Office is self sustaining, except a few things like mail out to the bush…Shannyn points out increases in costs. But since 1970, says caller, Post Office has been self-sustaining.

  43. 43

Shannyn, apparently, does not agree with this, though the caller is correct according to my recollection.

  55. 55
    Rob in CaNo Gravatar says:

Shannyn is back. The Reds are in on the Kenai. Don calls in…confirms Post Office is not subsidized by the gov since 1970. Shannyn talks about jacking up the price of stamps….he responds that the USPS is the best bargain compared to anywhere else in the world….and the costs of delivering mail are very high in Alaska. USPS loses money on every piece of mail in Alaska (I assume they make it up in California?). Shannyn wonders if we could apply this to other government agencies, to control costs. Caller reminds her that Government still controls what the USPS has to provide as service. They are mostly union too. Caller reminds Shannyn that most other gov agencies do not sell a service. USPS has largest fleet of vehicles in the world….imagine what the gas cost increases last year cost them!

  56. 56

  57. 57
    tewiseNo Gravatar says:

    yup thank you Rob

  58. 58
    Rob in CaNo Gravatar says:

Shannyn wants to get past who to blame…ie liberals or Bush or whatever…we need to fix things.

On to the Palin OpEd. How she slammed cap and trade. Cap and Trade should provide incentives to reduce carbon emmission and produce non-carbon energy sources like wind. Palin was for it before, administraton was for it..and now she is opposed.

    Commercial

  61. 61
    Rob in CaNo Gravatar says:

Shannyn is back…caller agrees you need a cap and gown to understand cap and trade. Caller thinks selling pollution rights doesn’t help anything, and a broker will make money on every transaction…and suggests Gore has a company setup that will do that. Shannyn agrees on the concept of cap and trade, and refers to Matt Taibbi’s writings on this. IT is not perfect. But every person that went in front of the Senate Resource Committee argued that Alaska and AGIA will benefit from cap and trade. Natural gas demand will increase, as opposed to coal. TransCanada also says this benefits Alaska.

I am not entirely convinced that this 24/7 news cycle is a good thing for us…
    ————————————————————————

Daughter #1 teaches journalism at Brandeis University in MA and her take is, and has been, that cable news is the cause of the demise of true journalism in the USA today. BBC and even Al Jazeera do a better job than MOST cable news stations.

CNN has no business reporting on Walter Cronkite. He was a true journalist and reporter. I have not watched CNN since the day John King interviewed Dick Cheney following the election and sat there shaking his head like one of those dolls you hang in your rear window of your car. Yes, um huh. Yes, um huh. I lost what little respect I had (and it wasn’t much) for CNN and especially John King. I will tell them this! They are so far below the standard Cronkite held and practiced.

    Peggy Pierce,
I’m not the CNN lover either. They too have become part of the cable-entertainent instead of news. Too many opinions and far too much speculation — all done over and over and over — they OCD a story now when there is nothing new for a week.

But, for US news, that’s all I’ve got other than the NBC, ABC, CBS evening hour news.

CNN is including calls and interviews with many of the people who worked with, associated with Cronkite.

Morley Safer, right now Bernard Shaw who is someone I liked at the old CNN days, Bob Schefer, Katie Couric, Sam Donaldson, Brian Williams and many others. A woman Susan Zirinsky, who was a young researcher in Cronkite’s newsroom and now works on 60 minutes, talked and showed Cronkite’s script of the night Nixon resigned with all his hand-wring as Cronkite was a packrat but had tossed it in the trashbin and she picked it out and kept it in her desk.

CBS is doing a special on Sunday night.
