Open Thread – Ghost Forest

 pws14

There is an interesting phenomenon visible in the coastal areas of South Central Alaska called the “ghost forest.”  You’ll be driving along, and all of a sudden you’ll notice stands of old spruce trees, denuded of branches and bark, standing there like pale sentinals.  I’ve heard different terms for these trees, but I like “ghost forest” the best.  You hear stories all the time from indigenous cultures that speak of the ancestors that are present all around us, and it seems that way with the ghost forest, that still exists so close to its living counterpart.

The ghost forests came to be after the Good Friday earthquake in March of 1964.  Those who were here at the time remember it well.  A whopping  8.4-8.6 on the Richter scale, the largest earthquake ever recorded in North America.  The epicenter was only a few miles from where this picture was taken, just north of Price William Sound.  The devastating quake caused 131 deaths, many from tsunamis.  Large sections of the ground shifted vertically, and several coastal areas sank down many feet to much lower levels.  This put the roots of the spruce trees far down enough to reach salt water, which eventually killed the trees where they stood.  Eventually they will decompose, but for now they still stand, eerie and beautiful – a reminder of the power that lies beneath us.

Pallin’ around with the liberal media
    July 18, 2009 1:13 pm ET
On Monday, Eric Boehlert highlighted Time’s upcoming cover story on Sarah Palin, titled, “The Outsider: Where is Sarah Palin Going Next?” While Palin has certainly received her share of bad press, a great deal of it has been the inevitable result of her own statements and actions. Interpretive articles like this one, however, are different and provide journalists with the chance to use their judgment to put past actions and ongoing trials in a broader context that will help readers better understand the subject at hand.

Which is why this article is so problematic. In it, Time’s David Von Drehle and Jay Newton-Small go to immense lengths to create a story out of thin air. In this case, it’s “The Renegade,” a tale about an unconventional politician making waves with her unpredictable behavior. The piece is deeply flawed, advancing conservative narratives without challenge and ignoring obvious realities about Palin, her home state, and the problems she faces. It’s an account that flies in the face not just of progressive criticisms of the governor, but of a growing chorus of conservative ones as well.

And it is exactly the kind of ratings-driven journalism that is, ironically, making magazines like Time less and less authoritative at a time when serious journalism couldn’t be more needed.

Sarah’s meltdown is reminiscent of the meltdown of Brittany Spears. Perhaps she modeled her meltdown after Brittany’s. Will Sarah’s father, soon, be named her legal guardian?

She may be planning to try to fill the void after Michael Jackson’s death. Sarahland? The word salad rap. Sarah makes CD’s and music videos. The music video: Bristol, Willow & Piper are the chorus dancers with Raggedy Ann dolls in their arms. Todd sits on his snow machine grinning into space revving the machine with the beat. The question is how well can Sarah sing & dance?

Will she turn the reins over to Sean Parnell with a newly shaven head, and wearing oversized Elton John glasses?

Maybe she’ll announce she is being cloned in order to save the world. and in 18 years, she’ll have enough votes to be elected potus, and take over the world.

Is the Governor’s picnic open to the press? If so, It could be one of the biggest press parties in history. Just in case it turns more bizarre.

AWESOME article! Thanks for posting that! It is a good read and really delves into how so much of what we hear from Palin and her fans is just accepted as fact without anyone actually looking to see if it is true.

As always with Palin, when you just dig a little deeper the truth comes pouring forth and it is never like she has claimed it to be.

We should never be afraid to question, dig deeper, and find the truth!

    —————
winkwinkWA, I think delusional disorder, has uncontrolled hallucination type episodes that resemble peyote, LSD, and mushroom highs. I found this article in Psychology Today last fall that seems to peg her behavior best:

Lowen characterized psychopaths as seeing life in black and white, with their internal motto being “kill or be killed.” They see the world as attacking them, so they meet life in an aggressive manner, always fighting for what they believe is “right.” ….They are apt to be charismatic communicators who seek and enjoy positions of power. They are usually attractive, commanding, and confident.

Apply this description to the little we know about Sarah Palin. In her speech at the Republican National Convention last week, she was full of spunk and vigor, sure of herself, smiling through her attacks on her opponents. She’s a warrior—afraid of nothing. After all, this is a woman who doesn’t hesitate to tackle a demanding job while raising five kids, including a newborn. A woman who has killed the meat she eats. A woman unafraid of firing anyone who crosses her in some way.

However, with this type of personality, all that outward bravado is frequently masking a deep sense of distrust and insecurity.

Okay, maybe not exactly the same, but close enough. He is keeping all of her people on isn’t he? He has already made his position pretty clear about the stimulus, and somehow I get the feeling that Palin left with her goals for AK well covered with the people she has positioned in the administration. Schmidt leaves? No problem, she declares Campbell a replacement, and who just goes right along? Parnell.

Sinclair Lewis is timeless! I had actually been wondering how John Dos Passos would have written about her since his mini biographies in the Big Money trilogy are written in seemingly random phrases. The difference between his style and Palin’s is that HIS works to paint a picture of the real person. Hers serves to merely confuse.

I have heard Hitler characterized many times as being an atheist, yet there appears to be much evidence to contradict that. I stumbled onto this website (linked) one day while looking into the story of Nazi belt buckles bearing the inscription “”Gott Mitt Uns”, which I found translated by many sources as “God Is With Us”. A rather odd thing for an atheist to dig into his treasury for, don’t you think?

While our Constitution forbids a religious test for public office, it is clear from the 2008 campaign that conservatives have managed to create one, and it sent chills up my spine to see Huckabee’s viability as a presidential candidate remain unaffected by his statements that our Constitution needs to be brought into line with “God’s Law”. If those of us who care to protect the secular quality of our nation and our government aren’t quick to establish our own religious filter for political candidates, we may find out too late that it’s later than we realized. While we were laughing at the fundies for playing rock LPs backward at half speed and shrieking about Satanic messages, they were already busy building a base from which to infiltrate American politics, and thanks to Ronald Reagan, the neocons, and George W Bush, they have made a disturbing amount of headway.

    Hitler’s Christianity

To deny the influence of Christianity on Hitler and its role in World War II, means that you must ignore history and forever bar yourself from understanding the source of German anti-Semitism and how the WWII atrocities occurred.

By using historical evidence of Hitler’s and his henchmen’s own words, this section aims to show how mixing religion with politics can cause conflicts, not only against religion but against government and its people. This site, in no way, condones Nazism, Neo-Nazism, fascist governments, or anti-Semitism, but instead, warns against them. … by Jim Walker

AKM said above in the thread intro, “There is an interesting phenomenon visible in the coastal areas of South Central Alaska called the “ghost forest.”

I know of a phenomenon resembling AKM’s coastal ghost forest, too, down in Washington State in the foothills surrounding Mt. Rainier. They’re ghosts for a water-related but different reason.

Kautz Creek was flooded with a glacial mudflow in 1947 after some kind of ice dam on Kautz Glacier on the mountain slope burst open after heavy rains, and the resulting mudflow inundated the trees along the course of the creek, and flooded the access highway.

The Park Service built a rest area at the site once the road was repaired. It was a popular stopping spot for tourists and locals alike for many years because the ghost trees were a spectacular sight.

In the last 20 years or so, the seedling firs have grown up to a point where the ghost trees appear only as occasional spires amongst the green.

There is a certain mystique about Alaska, the hardiness, the independence, the creativity of those living in the Last Frontier. ———————
In the interview the dealer used the Florida couple who were killed recently as an example of why he’s right to hand out gun vouchers with car purchases. He said that they would have been better off to be armed when those people invaded their home.

Since I am not a gun owner myself, I have a question for those of you who know more than I do. I have a number of family and friends who own guns (police officers, hunters and people who live in mountain lion and coyote country) and also have children in the house. They all have their guns securely locked away when not in use. If the Florida invasion happened as quickly as it seemed, would this man really have had time to access a weapon, load it and use it before he was killed? If you have that many children with autism and developmental disabilities in your home, would you really want easily accessible, loaded guns around? Or is this just a stupid example for the Missouri car dealer to use to promote his special ‘deal’?

If those of us who care to protect the secular quality of our nation and our government aren’t quick to establish our own religious filter for political candidates, we may find out too late that it’s later than we realized.
    ______________________
Had to walk the dogs and give your post some thought. I, too, have been increasingly troubled not so much by candidates spouting religious doctrine, but more that it is considered OK. While I am fine with a candidate being of a particular faith, I don’t want to hear it in an evangelical manner or as a justification for pubic policy. I resent the use of code words. The Huck crossed the line on the God’s Law quote. (On a positive note though, he and Jon Stewart had a very good discussion on pro/anti choice not long ago, showing that people can have faiths and beliefs, but we can also listen.)

I have heard it both ways on Hitler’s religion or lack thereof. Bottom line, his actions were not Christian, or at least not part of Christianity that I admire. I didn’t know about the buckle. Interesting.

It is frightening to me, and I don’t use that term lightly, that if one learns the code words, a person can sell himself as a Christian and it is rarely questioned by the supporters. These fakes seem to get away with a great deal in the name of God (or as that Murthee voice keeps echoing in my head, “In the name of Jeeezus…”) They are claiming a higher calling defined by man as a justification for ignoring the far higher road one should be taking according to the Bible. (You know, that high road one takes by washing the feet of others.)

Palin is an idiot, but she is dangerous in that she is also loudly justifying criticism of her as an attack on her faith, and she may be thinking she is going to get holy extra credit for this (Matthew 5:11) I would think Hitler did this, too, as a justification, but I would have to study up on that part.

I’ve recommended Thomas Frank’s book “What’s the Matter with Kansas” several times as a good insight into the rise of the religious right. I’m heartened by the increase in people calling BS on the hypocrisy of these types of people, though. Christianity is NOT the enemy, it is the mis-characterization of it by fearful people who selectively read the Bible in order to justify their own selfish actions. The same can be said of fanatics of any religion. We do need to watch out for them, but more importantly, I wonder why more of the truly faithful aren’t stepping up to denounce these types of fanatics. Instead, we get a Fox News report on how many Sundays the Obamas have missed church.

Thank you for giving me some “stuff” to chew on. I will check out your link.

I remember the Aryan Nations movement that settled into northern Idaho in the early seventies before I left there – the Aryan Nations Church and their leader Pastor Richard Butler. Since Obama’s election, it seems to me the conservatives have made it clear that white hegemony is still an underpinning of their hyper-religious ilk – an inalienable right from God if I read them correctly. Pat Buchanan reinforced my beliefs last week. And when that hegemony informs the world view of our politicians, it is not a good thing for us or the world.

Yesterday morning I sought refuge on the porch at daybreak to enjoy the early morning when even the desert is comfortably cool, and put on an old Bob Dylan album. I had completely forgotten about this song. (I love Youtube!)

Of course Todd may have to spend some of that AFT money to fly back to Alaska on behalf of Arctic Cat — mustn’t give up the racing gig — and the girls may want to stay in Alaska with their friends until they graduate.

“Landslides in Anchorage caused heavy damage. Huge slides occurred in the downtown business section, at Government Hill, and at Turnagain Heights. The largest and most devastating landslide occurred at Turnagain Heights. An area of about 130 acres was devasted by displacements that broke the ground into many deranged blocks that were collapsed and tilted at all angles. This slide destroyed about 75 private houses. Water mains and gas, sewer, telephone, and electrical systems were disrupted throughout the area. ”

The absolutely best book I’ve ever found that “puts you right there” in the 1964 resulting tsunami is called “Highliners”. It’s historical fiction about commercial fishing in Alaska, and chapters in between the story are dedicated to describing different species of fish sought after by those fisherman.

The story revolves around a young man who works summers in Alaska. In the spring of 1964, his skipper from Kodiak asks him to come fishing over the young man’s spring break at school. And guess what happened that March? The account is absolutely terrifying and puts you on the edge of your seat while reading. I highly recommend this book!

I read it while my husband was incommunicado while commercial shrimp fishing, and I spent hours after reading this book trying to locate him on the radio by calling different boats in the area where he was supposed to be. The book was so real, I was in a panic! This is one of those times where listening on the VHF was probably a bit interesting – the panicked wife calling all boats in Southeast Alaska looking for her husband who she was sure was heading for a tsunami and would be lost forever. Or maybe he’d gotten pulled overboard by the shrimp pot skates. Or washed overboard by a wave. You get the picture.

AKM’s photo is of the estuary below Billings Glacier, on Passage Canal. When Judy and I lived in Whittier, we often boated over there, summer and winter.

If you could draw a line from five miles south of Valdez to the NW edge of Perry Island, then a line from Perry to the eastern shore of Day Harbor (east of Resurrection Bay), you’d get the line between where land went up in the great AK earthquake (the area south and east of the line) and the area that went down (the areas north and west of the line.

At Billings, it appears that the coastal intertidal zone to about 50 to 100 feet inshore didn’t subside much in the quake, but that in the next hundred yards inland, there was a lot of subsidence That’s where those Sitka Spruce in the picture are situated.

Fred Crowell used to coach a vagabond post-collegiate Christian Athletes In Action team in the 60s, has written “faith” books, and now runs a Christian basketball camp, “Northwest Basketball Camps” in Spokane.

Apparently the Palins sent Willow off to one of Crowell’s basketball camps, an overnighter in Italy between July 5th and 11th.

When I first started going noticeably grey (in my early 20s), I was told that I should frost my hair because it camouflages (sp) the grey so very well. I never did do it, but it does kinda make me wonder about the frost job in that picture.

“Kim Severson, the reporter who interviewed Jessica Steele at some length in her salon for the article, received an e-mail from her early on July 13 saying, ‘Thank you so much for the article!! It was perfect!’

“Clean Energy Action Will Jump Start Our Economy”

“Sarah Palin’s “cap and tax” opinion piece printed in the Washington Post this week reminds me of every naysayer who has spoken out against progress in cleaning up pollution.

Whether it was the debate over the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the Superfund law or any of our other landmark environmental laws, one pattern has always been clear:

Time and time again, pessimists — often affiliated with polluting industries — predicted loss of jobs and great costs to taxpayers. And time and time again, our environmental laws have cleaned up the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the communities we live in at far lower cost than expected.

Take the acid rain program established in the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990.

The naysayers said it would cost consumers billions in higher electricity rates, when in reality the opposite happened, and electricity rates declined an average of 19 percent between 1990 and 2006.
The naysayers also said that cost to business would be more than $50 billion a year, when in reality the health and other benefits of the program outweighed the costs 40 to 1.”

‘Smart grid’ – power lines move into digital age

“Sadly, if Edison were alive today, he’d be all too familiar with the current system we rely on. Not that much has changed” in 127 years, said Carol Browner, the White House adviser on energy and climate. At a recent energy conference, she described that system as congested, disjointed and out of date.

Others compare the hundreds of thousands of miles of power lines that crisscross the country to a river flowing down a hill: an inefficient one-way movement of electrons from power plant to consumer. It uses primitive technologies – cables, meters, circuit breakers, fuses and rudimentary monitors. But there is little way to provide any feedback of information to the power company running the system or those buying the electricity.”

This will send the Palin fans into another tizzy that’s for sure. You watch, there will be tweets flying back and forth about how horrible Andree is. I’ve already seen calls for a restraining order against her from these people, so things will no doubt get worse. Heck yesterday someone on the ADN had posted her personal information (address and phone number) over and over again on several different Palin topics. It was sickening.

This will also hopefully force people to confront the fact that a) gifts have been held for 6+ months without being reported, and b) that there are numerous questions regarding this Legal Defense Fund, like if it is frozen due to a pending ethics complaint, how can it be used to pay off the bills?, and also perhaps expose who is lying about this fund and the legal bills Palin claims to have.

I wonder if John Coale and Greta regret getting involved with Palin now?

I think Twitter is silly, but fully admit Sarah’s are a source of humor. I am finding that our president’s twitters are a bit informative, and there are some history ones that send some “this day in history” tweets. They can go to the computer, phone, or you can just go to your twitter page and read them.

Good example – Shannyn is a good tweeter. Just sent one on Begnich trying to fix Sarah’s mess regarding Medicaide. Calls on her to get involved.

I have always had to mess with the magnifier on my mouse. It has been much easier for me to now read small fonts on the laptop as well.

to samper- you are too funny!

No PMS or anything like that. The worst of it was in HS… bad cramping and horrific back aches. Not as bad now, but still get them.

ANYTHING is better than waking up drenched in sweat, having to change all the linens and take a shower at 2AM. And, ANYTHING is better than a 2.5 week cycle (sometimes stretching out to 3 or even 3.5). I used to be able to tell the tides with my cycle (very dependable). Now, it’s like I’m 14 with erratic “surprises”.

Re: The electric grid thing: Anyone here go through the “Great Black Out of 2005(?)”? I think it was that summer. It was downright creepy here in Detroit! It was a HOT and STICKY night… We (me and kitties) slept on the 3-season porch, which was creepy, too. Too quiet and too dark.

As soon as day broke, I packed up the kitties and all our perishables and headed for BF’s house 1.5 hours away (luckily, had a full tank of gas and some rarely used cash on hand (I’m a debit card girl all the way!). Word was they had power west of Detroit at about Ann Arbor. He’s a little further west than that.

My phone would only dial 800 #’s, so I called my rep and good friend at Carnival Cruise Lines and he called BF to announce our pending arrival.

On the way: ZILLIONS of cars that tried to get off the freeways before running out of gas. Didn’t make it. OFF RAMPS littered with gasless vehicles, as were shoulders. Without traffic control lights, no one was moving off the freeway. Gridlock.

Mom had called from NC in the middle of the day to see if I had electricity. It was weird how SHE knew what was going on and I didn’t.

NEVER want to see grid problems again! A city like Detroit completely in the dark? Unimaginable!

UK LADY and samper: I just wanted to throw this out there, speaking of exceptional hair genes… :)

My age is yours, reversed, samper — I’m 64 headed for my next birthday around Thanksgiving…

About 10 years ago my hairdresser and I had a heart-to-heart talk, and I gave up perming my hair but decided to stick with the frosting for a while. Anyway, I gave up on the coloring too, about 2 years ago.

To my surprise the frosting/”weaving” wasn’t hiding much gray at all. I have about 20 white hairs sprouting just above my bangs, and that’s about it. Even my younger sis, who’s 55, and has near-black hair, has only about 30 white hairs.

    —————-

Palin’s hair could have been thinning because she’s having some thyroid imbalance in addition to stress and/or menopause. What’s the big deal about that? I think her hairdresser’s tizzy is just hilarious.

    She is SUCH a whiner!

FEW of the complaints were “frivolous”, as her CLEARED $8K check might attest to. They are LEGIT.

Just because the folks whom she could FIRE ruled in her favor doesn’t mean that violations didn’t happen.

I love it when she says “wearin’ a coat with a logo on it” instead of “head to toe neon walking billboard”. Talk about MINIMIZING the truth!

Yeah, menopause will be WAY easier than deciphering/dissecting this moron!

I can’t imagine it being worse. I’m 46, dammit, and have the “accidents” of a 13 year old who hasn’t established her routine yet.

In Juneau: I’m far from breath holding. Gave that up at 6 when Mommy told me boys are thoughtless. :-) (Present company excluded, of course!)

Thyroid – always connected it with weight issues. That, also too there, runs in the family – mom’s side.

Not a wrinkle to be seen here and I have the WORST ritual ever! I use a buff puff single (love these!) after my shower and that’s it. No creams or potions to ward off aging. Mom goes through a battery of steps before going to bed each night. I leave my make up on and after brushing my teeth, just flop into bed… GASP!

Again, good genes. There is ONE furrow between the eyebrows, but I attribute that to my intense “thoughtfulness”.

I agree with just blocking people I don’t know. The day I set it up, I had 4 followers. Trollers, I think. Blocked them. Only one other since then. Clipped it in the bud.

Something I did do, though. I did not use my HistoryGoddess since it is something my students also know me as. There were already a few so I was going to have to add a number or two. I know people can find stuff on google, but Twitter takes not long at all to see the tweets written and followers, and all their tweets. I was going to have to mind my mouth way too much.

Bottom line, I used a completely different name for Twitter. It is one my kids would be able to remember, but I feel a bit more protected.

It seems to me, given Governor Palin’s outgoing favourability numbers, that every ambitious politician in Alaska will wish to be associated with her legacy. And if i am reading the runes correctly, no ambitious politician will wish to be associated with failed ‘ethics’ complainers. Still less will they wish to be associated with Alaskan ‘progessives’. Depends on which kind of thyroid problem it is. Hyperthyroidism, yes. The kind I had, complete shut-down of the thyroid, probably not. The kind I had (now with artificial hormone replacement) if it goes far enough, you are listless, your face gets puffy and rounded (some Cushing’s Disease folks show this), and untreated, you die. I had to change doctors to get it diagnosed; I had a really stupid doc who also misdiagnosed a heart condition that I really didn’t have.
