Screen Door Sunday is Coming…

20 07 2009

This is it.  The final week of the Palin administration.  And while many Alaskans are still fans of the governor, gone are the days of 80% and 90% approval ratings.  The gubernatorial vetting process ended up being done by the national media after she’d already been tapped as John McCain’s running mate, and the nation (as well as the state of Alaska) learned a lot.

So now, this polarizing and divisive figurehead, known to us all as the soon-to-be-ex-two-thirds-of-one-term governor Sarah Palin has had enough.  She’s packed her bags and is headed for greener pastures.  So what’s a state to do?

Celebrate!

I’ve been hearing a lot about “screen door” parties.  In other words, “don’t let the screen door hit you on the way out!”  Are you having a Screen Door Saturday Party?  Or a Screen Door Sunday barbeque?  Even if you’re just lifting a glass, let me know.  I’ll be posting pictures and short descriptions of your celebration.

For any Mudflatters in Cordova, or looking for a great excuse to go, don’t miss a great party at The Reluctant Fisherman Inn!  According to their Facebook page, the festivities will begin at 7pm on Sunday night.

Our Guv’s last day: This is an historic event in the colorful history of Alaskan politics: We got dumped! Our Governor broke up with us. We cannot let the day go by without, well, hell, any excuse for a party!

Costumes, lipstick (and baggage) encouraged. Prizes! for Best in Show-off, Best Pageant Walk, Best Quitter Excuse, and others as we make them up!

The play list sounds awesome.  Here are some of my favorite selections.   Any other suggestions?

> Would I Lie to You? Eurythmics
> Money (That’s What I Want) Barrett Strong
> Ticket To Ride The Beatles
> You Better Go Now Billie Holiday

    CRFlats Says:

I will think differently about the lyrics of this oldie summer bubble gum song (interestingly enough, penned by Paul Simon for the Seekers):

    Red Rubber Ball

I should have known you’d bid me farewell.
There’s a lesson to be learned from this
and I’ve learned it very well.

    Now I know you’re not
the only starfish in the sea.
If I never hear your name again
it’s all the same to me.

And I think it’s gonna be all right.
Yeah, the worst is over now,
The morning sun is shining like a Red Rubber Ball.

You never cared for secrets I’d confide.
For you I’m just an ornament,
    Something for your pride.

    Always running, never caring,
    That’s the life you live.
    Stolen minutes of your time
were all you had to give.

And I think it’s gonna be all right.
Yeah, the worst is over now,
The morning sun is shining like a Red Rubber Ball.

The story’s in the past with nothing to recall.
I’ve got my life to live and I
    don’t need you at all

The roller coaster ride we took is
    nearly at an end.
I bought my ticket with my tears,
    that’s all I’m gonna spend.

And I think it’s gonna be all right.
Yeah, the worst is over now,
The morning sun is shining like a Red Rubber Ball.
