The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Screen Door Saturday, and a Double Dose of Rallies!

If you’re in Anchorage, or within driving distance, the downtown Park Strip is the place to be on Saturday!

There’s something for everyone!

*********************

The Governor’s Picnic!

hot-dog

Yes, this is it.  Anchorage’s “Screen Door” Celebration (as in, “Don’t let the screen door hit you on the way out!”) to bid adieu to the soon-to-be-ex governor and usher out the end of a very strange era that has been anything but beneficial to our state.

It hasn’t even been one term, or even one year since her nomination as VP candidate, but we’ve packed in more than our share of nail biting, head banging, belly laughing, chin stroking, face palming, head scratching, and typing our little fingers to the bone.

And this is it.  Finally.  The last full day of the Palin administration.

The Governor’s Picnic is an annual event, but this one is sure to be a piece of history.  So come on down and say you were there.

Join with your fellow Alaskans on the Park Strip.  Carry a sign if it moves you.  Humorous ones are probably in order to be in keeping with the festive mood.  Bring the kids, get a hot dog from the governor, and enjoy the afternoon.

When:  Noon to 3pm

***********************

And while you’re there, right on the Park Strip, enjoy another event!

organizing

Alaskans Coming Together for Health Care Reform!

There will definitely be lots of media coverage downtown for that other event I just mentioned… so it’s a great time to throw your support to something positive and get some good coverage for the issues important to our future!  Band together with your fellow Americans and demand REAL health care reform.  Send a message to congress.  Bring your signs, your kids, your dog, and make a day of it!

Find out what you can do to organize for real change.

The event kicks off at 2pm, and speakers begin at 2:30.

When:  2pm to 4pm

*****************************

Use the comments to talk about the event, and make suggestions for signs and slogans for both events!

*Note that the official “stepping down” will occur at the Fairbanks Governor’s Picnic the following day.  Don’t fear… Mudflats will have “boots on the ground!”

I would have thought that the way to handle the transfer of power would have been for a nice, small, ceremony of the ‘passing of the gavel’ from SP to SP … oh nuts, same initials… Palin to Parnell, at the capitol, would have been appropriate.

Nope, not your Sarah. Gotta be a picnic, and not just one, and not in … the actual capitol???

Proof of the pudding will be in who gets to talk longer. Get your stopwatches out and time how long they speak. Parnell should be the focus of attention. The day is supposed to be about him and the future.

Time their speeches. If Palin speaks longer, then obviously she thinks the day is all about her. Bad form. Like, the bridesmaid upstaging the bride at the wedding.

I suggest wearing non-logoed red shirts and chanting “Sean Parnell! Sean Parnell!” if she babbles on too long.

The actual Capital NEVER gets a Gov’s Picnic. I think the theory is that the person is “always” here, so we don’t need a special occassion to see him/her, and the picnic parade around the state is a chance for the gov to meet and greet constituents in other towns.

That said, tomorrow is one of the few days I wish I could be in Anchorage…

Tell you what, bring the stopwatch – I will put up a dollar a minute (my money on HER HER HER HER HER to speak far longer than Parnell). Wonder if she will take the (priceless) advice of the organizers to wear sensible shoes and no naughty monkey heels. I considered the fact that she might not even show up – but now that the cameras and national media are attending, no way she can pass it up. Hope to see pics of pups with signs, maybe “AK FUND TRUST= FRAUD – GIVE THE $ BACK SARAH!”

RED shirts? Dontcha mean BLUE ones? What’d I miss? I thought we don’t “do” RED.
    * ** * ** * ** * ** *
I only meant red shirts in the sense that others around would therefore assume you were Republican and genuinely wished to hear your new Republican governor speak, and would not try to silence you or chant over you. Heck, they might even join in with you.

Actually I really detest the Red vs. Blue thing. Although it can be useful in certain circumstances, ultimatelt I believe it only serves to keep us divided. And misprepresented. How many out there are ‘blue’ people who live in states continually refered to as ‘red’? And what about the yellows? And what about the people who are part blue and part red? Or part yellow and part red? Or part yellow and part blue?

Oh yeah, they’re the purples, the oranges and the greens.

At 3 p.m., focus will shift to a stage on the lawn in front of the riverboat S.S. Nenana, the “Queen of the Yukon,” that traveled Alaska waters between 1933 and 1954. Palin is scheduled to make some remarks and officially resign her post, which she’s held for two years and seven months. Her family is expected to join her.

Pioneer Park staff are hoping advisers will ask Palin to set the Naughty Monkey pumps aside in favor of sensible shoes more suited to slick riverboat floors and stairs.”

    Another Ethics Complaint Dismissed

July 24, 2009, Anchorage, Alaska – The Personnel Board has announced that another ethics complaint against Governor Sarah Palin has been dismissed….. “Andree McLeod has failed to prevail on any of the ethics complaints she has filed against the governor,” said Mike Nizich, Palin’s chief of staff. “It appears her agenda is clear – she’s abusing the ethics laws to harass public officials.”

antiAnti – oh boy, scarah will be gloating all night via her tweets re the dismissal of that complaint. She will complain about the “costs,” and I doubt it costs anything when dismissed that quickly. More $ will roll in to the AK Fund Trust for poor, victimized queen. Makes me ill. She is what is called a “sore winner” when it comes to dismissed complaints – no class or adult behavior at all. And NEVER a twitter or apology when she is found of wrong-doing.

    BARFING UNCONTROLLABLY!!!!!

July 24, 2009, Anchorage, Alaska – The Personnel Board has announced that another ethics complaint against Governor Sarah Palin has been dismissed.

The complaint, the sixth filed by Anchorage resident Andree McLeod, accused the governor of violating the Ethics Act by receiving her salary while campaigning for vice president. The accusation, lodged Monday, was dismissed as legally flawed and factually devoid of merit.

Governor Palin remained on duty, conducted state business, and communicated with her staff and her constituents. “Andree McLeod has failed to prevail on any of the ethics complaints she has filed against the governor,” said Mike Nizich, Palin’s chief of staff. “It appears her agenda is clear – she’s abusing the ethics laws to harass public officials.”

    ================

The last sentence states CLEARLY that Palin is an EFFING WHINER AND CRY BABY.

Further, how is this about “her family/admin”? It’s all about HER, collecting a salary while away for 2 months!

FACTUALLY DEVOID OF MERIT? ARE THEY EFFING KIDDING ME????? That woman was OUT OF STATE for 2 months, should have handed control over to Gov Light and SHOULD NOT HAVE RECEIVED A SALARY for tweeting a couple of things to her stupid “staff” in AK. To spend an hour or so on Gov’ing is NOT worthy of a paycheck!

LEGALLY FLAWED? How so? How is it that a common citizen, while making a clear point, if not in LEGALESE, has to hire attorneys to file for them??????

I swear, you guys… She is DAMN lucky I can’t drive into Anch or Fbx or whereever the he!! the Farewell Tour is going.

Really? Well, ya learn something new everyday!

I must have first heard a cover of that song. I was thinking of a kickin’ version of it by the Sanford-Townsend Band from the 70s.

Almost jazzy, soprano sax, a little Hammond B3.

For those of you just coming into the conversation, the song “Smoke from a Distant Fire” – whether sung by Conway Twitty or the guys from the Sanford-Townsend Band – has this line:

“Don’t let the screen door hit you .. on the way out”.

And it’s been going through my head all day.

You can hear a little of it here.
