Open Thread – Time Machine to One Year Ago
This is an image I used waaay back in the third week of July of last year. It made me laugh because it just shows how wrong you can be. I used it with the heading “Palin’s VP Prospects are Circling the Drain.” She had’t been tapped yet, and Troopergate was hitting the fan. “Who,” thought I, “would be stupid enough to choose her now? She’s clearly ethically-challenged and everyone knows it. So much for those VP chances!
I thought it might be fun to hop in the time machine and go back to July 21, 2008, almost exactly one year ago.
But now we’re going to have an investigation of not only a sitting governor, but a potential Vice Presidential candidate. Until now, Palin has been the darling of the right, and on McCain’s short list for VP running mate. She’s cute, she’s tough, she wears red suits, she’s a social conservative, she’s pro-life, she’s a woman, she’s a hockey mom with 5 kids, and most of all she’s squeaky squeaky clean! … Uh oh.
Truth is, her reputation for sweeping the state clean of corruption, and restoring ethics and transparency to government was the foundation on which all those other things rested. Take that away, and it all falls like a house of cards. McCain isn’t considering her as a running-mate to secure Alaska’s three electoral votes, that’s for sure. He wants her image. And now, that image is sullied, which means right about now her chances for the VP nod are circling the drain. In this election, no one can afford to be linked to another corrupt Republican….least of all a corrupt Republican.
Who would be stupid enough to hitch his wagon to that star? I guess we got our answer.

I found this on FoxNation Coale is Greta VanSusterns Husband.

AKM, you were smarter than McCain. It just took a while to prove it.
But AKM, nobody ever said John McCain was very bright.
ds55, AKM has been smarter and right about many things in the past year or so. I just cannot figure out why anyone would not listen to or take advise from AKM. She’s batting 1000, in my books, thats a perfect score.
The damning part of this story is that they knew she had ethical problems, but that it just wasn’t important to them. Style and flash over character and competence. That is why the GOP is circling the drain.
Oddly enough I had been looking at some older articles when I saw this posted.
It’s funny you post something using the ‘way back machine’, when I was just looking at older topics regarding Palin.

From Lisa Demer in Anchorage —
Todd Palin has a state-paid BlackBerry.
Gov. Sarah Palin’s husband shows up on a list of more than 40 governor’s office employees with the state-provided BlackBerrys and cellphones. He is the only non-employee there.
Erika Fagerstrom, the manager of the governor’s residence in Juneau, asked that he get a state BlackBerry back in July 2007 so she could more easily communicate with him regarding the house, especially when he’s at work on the North Slope, said Linda Perez, the governor’s administrative director. Todd is a production operator for BP.

Bonus: There are still four pending ethics violations.
Troopergate -yeah…it all still feels unresolved, not fully explained and still confounding how Palin was still chosen as VP with that fiasco hovering around her and Todd, (among other things).
Love that image, AKM!
AKM, the only thing you couldn’t predict was the apparent Republican addiction to the circular firing squad. That and just how stupid horny middle aged Republican men can be when they think with organs other than their brains. William Kristol, et. al., are so besotted with Palin that you can practically see them drool when shown her image. Some kind of Pavlovian response, I guess. I don’t get it at all. I can’t seem to get past the narcissistic inanity that she exudes. The woman simply can’t make a subject
and predicate agree, even at gunpoint.
I take great pride in noting that one of my suggested names for Palin’s nascent political third rail is leading at the Mudflats polling place. Go CRAP! (Oooh, great slogan!)
I intend to be quite humble when giving my acceptance speech.
I was looking up McCleod’s lawsuit when I noticed this:
3AN-09-09005CI McBrien, Karen W vs. State of Alaska et al
It was filed on the 22nd. The ex-gov. is still collecting lawsuits and I believe this makes 4 open lawsuits.
Well, someone WAS paying attention… almost as soon as AKM and SP chose to ignore the advice.

Great desecration of an iconic image ! Wish my printer worked. It’s a fabulous banner to have on hand this weekend!
It’s a beautiful morning in Buffalo. Perfect day for a Screen Door Party. I’ll be grillin , chillin , and sasparillin’ ( at least until a suitable cocktail hour has arrived)
Looking forward to checking in with everyone as the day goes along. Hope to hear some good stories from the picnic front.
Gasman – Love your CRAP! It got one of my votes along with God Squad and Point Guards for Jesus. It was tough to choose just 5!
AKM , just gotta take a moment to say THANK YOU for your amazing work this past year. I came to the game in September and was so taken by your writing style and insights that I never left. (and there are days that it feels like I literally have NEVER LEFT). You excel at what you do. You have my sincere appreciation for this fabulous experience.
Onward !!

Too bad the time machine only goes backward. Just think how nice it would have been in July in 2008 to know that by April 2009 the Palin’s governor’s web site would have a press release with this statement regarding citizens who dare to file an ethics complaint:
” I hope that the publicity-seekers will face a backlash from Alaskans…”

But Fox has corralled a stable of the most disreputable, unqualified, extremist, lunatics ever assembled, and is presenting them as experts, analysts, and leaders. These third-rate icons of idiocy are marketed by Fox like any other gag gift (i.e. pet rocks, plastic vomit, Sarah Palin, etc.). So while most Americans have never heard of actual Republican party bosses like House Majority Leader John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, posers like Joe the Plumber and Carrie Prejean have become household names.

Hey – I’ve got a “hot dogs in Alaska” question. Were the Wassilla weenies that Palin was serving up cooked on a grill ? They looked so “oscar mayer” pink. I had this idea that an Alaskan picnic would grill the heck out of just about everything. Here in Buffalo it just ain’t a proper hot dog if it’s not a charbroiled Sahlen’s. ( local sausage/hot dog maker. some of the best dogs you’ll ever eat!)

Oh no doubt that they will keep them, but I want to know why the state is paying for Todd to have one in the first place. Does Parnell’s wife have a state paid cellphone/blackberry?? If not, why not? Do other spouses get them paid for by the state as well?? (not based on the list that is included in the article).
All these little perks…on the state’s dime. But she’s supposedly this great fiscal conservative (only with her own money, she’ll spend other people’s money like it will vanish if she doesn’t).

@ EyeOnYou: I don’t know the lady in the beige jacket, but she’s also in picture 29 standing outside Palin’s vehicle.
I wonder if Piper has any choice in this type of stuff…No toad, B or W, or Trig? Very functional family…”Come on sista, we’re goin to the picnic”….”But mom I wanna play with my friends”…”Just get in the car….”

Ds55,
I noticed her in several pictures on the adn site and elsewhere, and was just curious as she doesn’t look familiar to me.
one of the comments on your Newt story -
I think it’s an awesome idea to position Sarah Palin as the leading Republic voice on energy.
Maybe they can position Newt as the leading Republic voice on the sanctity of marriage. Tim Pawlenty on infrastructure investment. And Mitt as the leading voice on dog care.
” Palin, 45, sees state ethics reform as her lasting legacy.” ha!
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/24/AR2009072403889.html
Well, technically, “ethics” WILL be part of her lasting legacy. Just not the way she’s thinking they’ll be.
Austin, I would guess “sporting wood” over packin’ .
I would like to say you were not wrong, you just dramatically overestimated John McCain’s decision making ability. I was “almost” pro-McCain before he said “Sarah Palin, COME ON DOWN”.

Right, I was looking for a jacket. I think the kid’s call those hoddies. I figured that’s what you meant. I guess that shows “everyone and their mum carries a gun round here” (from Hot Fuzz).
In her position (regardless of road to get there, ie her actions) that I was so hated in my own state ( the NPD and delusions of grandeur don’t help) and out with my kids, I would be packin’ too. On a personal level I would sure hope that no one no matter how crazy, would dignify here with an attack now that she has quit.
Why wasn’t Gov. Quittypants wearing her wedding ring? Hmmmmmm…
“…would dignify her with an attack”
Palin’s child looks unhappy in the photos. Todd and the other kids didn’t show. Something does seems very wrong about that.
Sure, all of it is strange – for Palin to be at a picnic, having to put on a smile when she is stepping down from the job in disgrace, probably worrying about the numerous ethics complaints or lawsuits that may eventually catch up to her.
Maybe, though, if there was some honesty from Sarah Palin, (like the truth about why she is stepping down and an acknowledgement of some sort that her governance was a little less than perfect), I would feel more understanding and sympathy for her and not just a bit sad for her kids.
We were talkin’ about the lady behind sarah in the khaki jacket. Wondering who she is ………..and I thought she had something “bulky” portruding , thats all.
Love the use of the wayyy back machine, AKM. I’d read through the comments to your original article and was a bit surprised and amused that you had to defend yourself in the comments section … it would be interesting to track down those commenters (not in an icky, stalking kind of way though) to see what their take is on their beloved SP now.
“Ted” who commented EVERYwhere before Palin was nominated, completely vanished as soon as she was picked. We all speculated it was Adam Brickley, the kid that created the Palin for VP website. AKM

austintx ….it appears she is wearing a vest. Her weapon must be somewhere else, easy access. If you noticed her coat is completely fastened up, so her weapon would not be under there, unless she has lost some of her brain power dealing with quitter.

No wedding ring in any of the pictures. But did you notice the Todd look-alike next to her? Hmmmm…
Re: Family being there-
As for Willow, more power to her for staying out of any spotlight. The kids asked for none of this, no matter how many times $ claims otherwise.
The “boots on the ground” flicker photographs show Bristol holding Tripp, with that Ivy woman behind her on a blackberry. I do think it is a bit odd that Todd isn’t there, but maybe he is changing Trigg’s diaper or something
…ooh that woman drives me nuts.
tewise -
I’ve seen Perry’s security detail wear similar jackets with the big pockets and the front is “fastened” by velcro. One hard jerk , voila , access.
I apologize for over analyzing.
booboodog~
That is one of her old flames…Schmidt, who was going to be Lt. Gov, when she quit and then he quit as well. No doubt he was sticking close by since Todd was no where to be seen.
I said I was feeling slow. But that lass is a bit young, but do I agree, her jacket is pulling a little funny. But we Alaskan’s know how to carry guns, she would have to have some kind of submachine gun under there. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUTOJOUxO4o yeah, that’s me yesterday, I am a white hat, don’t worry) and working for APD at the picnic today in Anchorage.
I’ve seen other pictures and everyone but Todd was there, or at least they all had photos taken but Todd. Photo’s of Willow carrying Trig, Bristol with Tripp, and Piper of course was there as well. Odd that you don’t really see them all together.
austintx you are probably right, I never fastened my coat when I was carrying. I just didn’t feel comfortable when put in a dangerous situation.
I QUIT TOO!
I have had enough of the frivolous, expensive consequences of my actions.
I will follow Sarah’s exemplary lead……and I will do it on this very special occasion. I will have a picnic here in the Texas backyard. I will dispose of my expensive, unwarranted, lipstick laden butts by wearing my waders in the pool. Surrounded by patriotic music, I will wink as I toss my bad habits into what little Texas wind we have. Actually, I AM NOT A QUITTER.But also too and then some, you betcha, I must follow Sarah’s plan and reduce unnecessary expenses. I must look for other cracks in any rickety door that might open for me. And, to assert my Independence, just as Sarah did, I must “Quit but not quit” on a memorable occasion.
There is no more memorable occasion than this weekend for me to dispose of a filthy, nasty, addictive habit that breeds nastiness and ugliness. Not to mention unhealthyness. Thank you Alaska for the Screen Door celebrations. Thank you GINO for inspiring me to follow in your monkey shoe footsteps. Yes, I will be disposing of the smoking habit this weekend. Sarah will be “walking backwards through the screendoors as she searches for any new opportunities. I, instead, will go bravely through the door face forward and hope it does hit me in my “butts’ as I toss them in the wind, hoping to never see or hear of them again.
Wish me luck…for, like Sarah, I am saying that I quit but then won’t quit.
Maybe change brands? Maybe Cigars? Oh heck, I’ll just wait and see what Sarah does.
…And I am off to meet our MIC for picnic set-up. Thanks to all for the great links (as always) on the thread.

Interesting that she’s got the jacket zipped/buttoned up though, on a July day in southcentral Alaska. It doesn’t look THAT cold. In fact, I wonder if the reason Palin, Piper, the blonde gal in the black jacket nex to Palin, etc. were all in sweatshirts or jackets is that they were wearing bulletproof vests?
ds55 Says: July 25th, 2009 at 6:20 AM @ EyeOnYou: I don’t know the lady in the beige jacket, but she’s also in picture 29 standing outside Palin’s vehicle.
So’s the blonde gal.
Other random stream-of-consciousness comments by me on seeing the ADN slideshow:
Mrs. Alaska looks like she was on the Sarah Palin Diet for the past year — diet Dr. Pepper and amphetamines.
The “real” blonde gal with the knot of hair at the back of her neck, dressed in a black jacket — is that Palin’s secretary? She was right by Palin’s side as Palin served up those limp boiled hot dogs. It looked like she was holding a handful of business cards (with Palin’s new Twitter addy?).
If you look at the perimeters of the crowd in the photos, the crowd wasn’t all THAT “large”. Very neatly cropped pix, ADN.
The woman in the wheelchair — wonder if she’s been evaluated recently by the State of Alaska DSHS home health team? The agency that diddled and sat on their thumbs while 227 people died during Palin’s aborted term…
In picture #35 — the expression on Palin’s face is interesting — a pinched up smile/sneer — my impression is that she gets this “look” when she sees someone who’s beautiful or will be beautiful, like this little redhead.
Never noticed about the missing ring myself, but we’ve all observed how bony and skeletal Palin’s hands seem to be now — I imagine the ring just fell off, or it’s too loose to wear.
Maybe when she was out fishing a couple of weeks ago, it just dropped in the drink. I’ll bet that made Toddy mad, especially since he probably has told her over and over again to WEAR HER GLOVES!
KaJo, I think that the blonde in the black jacket is maybe “ivy frye”???
$P hasn’t been wearing the wedding ring for some time… she didn’t have it on when she did the walk across the stage at that RNC dinner she was asked to speak at but dilly-dallied so long that Newt got tapped to talk.
Pictures here.
Ennealogic,
I hadn’t noticed it missing that long..still might be a mystery here or not.
Maybe she is gettin’ too skinny. I am relieved, I can get some work done now!
I’ll be checking in all weekend-don’t want to miss the party!

This comment was simply fabulous :
**** spectacularly rambling and infantile prose bespeaks a rambling and infantile mind. She strings words together in bizarre combination and syntax, disregarding their actual meaning and using the monkey shit strategy of flinging them at the wall and seeing what sticks. Without a teleprompter in front of her scrolling a prepared, rehearsed speech, she is utterly unable to thread sentences together without causing the voice inside our heads to scream “make the stupid stop!”
Platitudes and poor syntax, catchphrases and clichés, buzzwords and baby references – these are about all she has going for her. No rhyme, and certainly no reason. Whatever Palin is saying at any given moment are just words fluttering out of her mouth. She may believe them as she says them, but they have no durability. She’s very much like a child who parrots everything heard without any understanding of its meaning, and without ever recalling having uttered it. *****
Who wants to lay me a bet Todd is divorcing her, soon?
WakeUpAmerica- I tried to go to the website and it won’t load. So many people going over there that it crashed? I am able to get other sites and I even tried it through a google link when I double checked the address. Funny.
I went to Palin’s AK Gov page to see it there had been a change yet. No such luck. I did notice the press release that shows on the 24th she made a bunch of appointments. They may all be wonderful, deserving people, but I would think that since she knew she was going, she’d let Parnell handle it on Monday. As it is and how tainted she is, last minute appointments look suspicious and SO lame ducky.

I doubt it. If her already checkered history of being pregnant out of wedlock, coupled with her daughter’s, didn’t phase them, what is a little divorce to matter? It will be spun somehow to make her seem the victim…again.

“…served up hot dogs, signed autographs, handed out flags to family members of serving military members.”
Wow, I thought these were scheduled annual picnics for all Alaskans. I would think it would important to be as inclusive as possible, on her way out the door. Maybe some Alaska flags? Guess I’m not going. But that’s okay, because there will be plenty of military families there, with license plates from all over the country, to celebrate Alaskans.
There just has to be a theme with this woman. She cannot have an open celebratory event, can she? There has to be partisanship, an element of ‘us-and-them’. Was all the red, white and blue patriotism schwag meant for July 4th stuff that she didn’t attend? Just what, exactly, are these picnics this weekend for?
I looked through all the photos. Boy, she needs to enjoy it. It’s the last big fan club public appearances in Alaska for her.
Photo #37 has a GIANT banner for Kristen Cole (I think?) in the entire background of the photo.
Mrs. Alaska in the pink suit isn’t the same Mrs. Alaska that led a pack of red-shirt teenagers against gay people at the Assembly meetings.
#3 – now, that is not a happy little girl. I feel so sorry for Piper; when that little girl goes back to school in 3 weeks, she won’t be a rockstar. Children are not kind, especially when Mommy’s not around.
But then, she doesn’t go to school, does she?
@Seagull: Gingrich, too! Probably many more that I cannot remember. Wait a minute…John McCain. Remember he ditched his first wife for Cindy? Plus cheated on her as well. Probably Cindy, too.
CG said: “#3 – now, that is not a happy little girl. I feel so sorry for Piper; when that little girl goes back to school in 3 weeks, she won’t be a rockstar.”
I noticed that, and look at the little boy with his face turned away. See the hand clutching his left arm? It almost looks as if he were being forced forward, and he did not want to go.
aha, They show NO affection towards each other at all. At her resignation he didnt even look at her. Now he has NO power at all….Hmmmmmm…Like ‘bots, they are. Not taking that bet.

seagull junker – i laughed about the patriots sweatshirt. i sat there trying to figure out if she would really just wear an NFL sweatshirt simply to use the team’s name as an advertisement on her breasts. shockingly, she did. and by shockingly, i mean she is ridiculous.
she is political britney spears. we can’t stop watching, even when it is painful. i wonder if she will shave her head. are we at that point yet?
Remember when Bristol got upset with waz-iz-name for losing his ring? His solution was to have Bristol’s tatooed on his finger. Maybe that’s what SP should do!
Must read! Regina has found the Alaska law that can send her away!

I was reading on the Daily Beast that the sweatshirt apparently has the NFL Patriots logo reversed. Like the type you’d get at Walmart, made in China…….
@Dr. Patois #101 – you’re great – thanks
I remember over on DailyKOS back in the spring of 08, we were all so worried about Sarah Palin, thinking that she was one to watch out for. She sounded so good on paper! She was discribed as being someone who was honest, a real straight shorter, charming, able to bring people from both sides together and a real knowledgable about policy. We know she was very Conservative, but she sounded like someone who could be the first Republican female President. Then Troopergate hit and we all scratched her off the list of possible McCain VP picks, and honestly, most people had concidered a long shot even before the scandel hit because she didn’t seem to have enough experience yet. By the end of the summer we knew Sarah a lot better. People were still afraid that she would somehow end up in the oval office, but I’ve been saying since late summer, that Palin would be lucky to make if through her first term and the rate she was going.
Love the picture AKM, she may not be down the drain, but she’s spinning her way there.
I do hope her children survive all this.
WakeupAmerica — re asking for Wasilla zip code for poll –
People will realize soon enough that these online polls are meaningless. Let’s not stoop to dishonesty just because the other side does it.
dr. pat – there is one problem with a lot of these criminal statutes. you have to analyze her state of mind at the time the crime was committed (in addition to the act itself). meaning, in most theft jurisdictions, you would have to show she intentionally (or with specific intent) knew that she was stealing and meant to steal, under the applicable statute. in my opinion, it is much harder than it sounds here.
“Who would be stupid enough to hitch his wagon to that star?” That shining meteor generated light only through air friction and is about to hit the earth as an ugly black rock.
Oh, yay! The court journalist is still part of Queen Sarah’s entourage! That’s just awesome – a Washington, DC Associated Press journalist is writing for the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman.

Palin picnic in Alaska hometown draws big crowd

Aw shucks, the picnics are Sarah for President campaign events. Ah, that’s why she made a point of saying a few days ago that these picnics were paid for privately and not state expense.
She WANTS military, because they ARE from all over the country and will generate support outside of the state! Okay, I get it.
In the meantime, Alaska state residents in military service are posted elsewhere. They are not here for this picnic, but hopefully some of their families are.
JHop @107
The blatant difference between the purported purpose and the real purpose is not enough? Oh, right. $arah knew nothing about it.
BTW JHop, did you see or feel all the love flowing your way on all of the Alaska blogs?! You are a hero for all of your hard work!
Great article at Palingates!
http://palingates.blogspot.com/2009/07/looking-at-arah-palins-legal-fund-from.html
I just knew there was crook leaving office, and I am particularly fond of the reference to DECEPTION.
Last night I went to the website of the AFT custodial company and discovered just why (IMO) they wanted the trust set up in Alaska. Alaska’s trust laws are the most friendly in the country!
http://www.alaskatrust.com/
lol i saw it mentioned on progressive alaska, which was really nice. i just want to know why the trust document was never looked at during an official investigation into the trust. i also want to know who leaked that report…
I fought the blogs…
And the blogs won.
Sarah Palin (Q)
Jhop – same reason the Arctic Cat agreement was never looked at during that investigation.
the reason it will be hard to hold her criminally liable for something like theft is that there is really no way to show she knew she was stealing and intending to steal. i.e. she didn’t specifically intend to steal from people; she intended to raise money from her supporters.
it would be much easier to hold her for tax fraud or corruption of public office, etc.
Dr. Patois at 101, I just saw you had already posted the link to Regina’s. JHop and SG are fantastic. Gives renewed faith in those in the legal profession.
she can know about the trust and even that it was shady, but that doesn’t mean she specifically intended to steal from people.
thank you prochoicegrandma. and more grandmothers should be pro-choice. if i had to pick one “issue,” choice would probably be it. so thank you for that too.
RE: SP and Todd relationship discussion
I, too, also, had a hit of intuitive feeling last fall that the Palin marriage was in trouble. There may be a solid upstanding reason that She isn’t wearing her wedding band, and He wasn’t at the picnic… But, eventually she will probably put her Dude under the bus, or be WINO.
JHop, one thing I noticed in the Agreement last night is that the trustee cannot be subordinate to Sarah Palin. #5 at the top of page 4. Obviously, she will no longer be governor tomorrow but when the trust was set up wasn’t Cole subordinate to the governor when she was appointed to the various boards/commissions?
For those rampantly speculating
about Sarah not wearing a ring. There is a provision in the trust that prevents any claim of alimony or spousal support.
#14 Spendthrift Provision (I am sure that is standard… right JHop?)
Here’s some recent important military news. Sarah doesn’t mention it, but this is a significant deal.
http://www.ktuu.com/Global/story.asp?S=10782547&nav=menu510_2
Thursday, July 23, 2009
The U.S. Senate voted to restore military retirement benefits to 26 members of the Alaska Territorial Guard late Thursday.
The Senate agreed by unanimous consent to adopt the ATG amendment as part of a $679 billion defense authorization bill.
The amendment was offered by Alaska Sens. Mark Begich and Lisa Murkowski. Earlier this year the Defense Department abruptly announced that it would no longer pay the ATG’s retirement benefits.
[Um, that would be on Sarah's watch.]
An estimated 300 members are still living from the original 6,600-member unit formed in 1942 to protect the territory from attack. The unit stepped in after the Alaska National Guard was called overseas.
The territorial guards – nicknamed Uncle Sam’s Men and Eskimo Scouts – received no pay or benefits for the job. Many replaced their time hunting and fishing for their food with frequent drills and duties that included scouting patrols, construction of military airstrips and hundreds of miles of trail breaking.
The unit was disbanded with little fanfare in 1947, nearly two years after the war ended.
yes standard. trusts normally are not affected by creditors/claims. one of their perks.
the trustee is not subordinate to anyone. but cole is definitely subordinate to palin in her various board/political positions. it is a complete co-mingling and conflict of interest.
the fact that we are even questioning this, especially in the manner that we are, shows the ethical problem with a governor having a trust such as AFT.
CG@122 She did tweet about it the other day.
JHop@123 So Cole should never have been the trustee because it specifically says:
Notwithstanding anything contained herein to the contrary, i no event shall any Trustee acting hereunder be related or subordinate, within the meaning of Section 672(c) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended, to SARAH PALIN.
It seems that the AFT is infringing on a FTC consumer protection law in some form, but does it take a private citizen’s complaint to instigate an investigation?
JHop, looking at the Memorandum, I wondered if perhaps there is a secondary trust, “Legal Expense Fund”?
I have to get to the farmers market before they close
Patriotism, At Home.
http://shannynmoore.wordpress.com/2009/04/17/governor-palin-support-the-troops/
Worth reading. It took Sarah Palin 21 days to sign SB289.
In the meantime, she signed some stuff and issued some proclamations for POW/MIAs and spoke to an Indiana anti-choice group about not getting abortions.
JHop, If she really didn’t owe over $500,000 when this fund was started as Mr. Coale in DC has stated in writing, then maybe she was planning to steal money from the public. If the state of Alaska has reported that the total cost of all of the ethics complaints was less than she claimed she owed when the fund began in April, maybe the plan was to steal by falsifying information to take money from people. I would love to see this issue go forward so people can’t just start begging $ for anything they so desire. On another note: Since she will be a private citizen and no longer a Politician on Sun., will she still be able to accept money in the SarahPac? I thought the Pacs were only for Politicians. Anybody know?
Thanks JHop, I strongly support choice, although my foremost concern is to maintain the separation of church and state. I am fearful of the puppeteers that put W into the White House for 8 looonng years, and again attempted to put another W with a skirt near the White House to create a theocracy. This is one lady that will never wear a burqa, even if it is red, white and blue.
@124 JHop Says: July 25th, 2009 at 11:02 AM “…the ethical problem with a governor having a trust such as AFT”

AKM – I believe that this is my favorite picture of all the Palin pictures you have posted this last year! It’s so simple, elegant, and prophetic. The governor did go down the drain, and Palin did the flushing. I just love this – it’s been making me giggle all morning!
greatgrammy – i agree with what you wrote. but prove it. that is the problem. those are a lot of “ifs,” how can you evidence her state of mind?
anti – quitting the governorship did not help at all with AFT. now the trust has no purpose. the state of AK can dissolve the trust and force the funds to be donated to charity. how to make that happen, i don’t know. but we should find out.
@JHOP btw, I strongly support choice. I think that only the indigent and the underaged can’t exercise their freedom of choice with regard to abortion via a quick trip to Canada or Sweden. Consigning those not free or unwilling to travel to the back alley abortionists is cruel, stupid and does NOT prevent abortions. My mother hated the fact she could not have an abortion and was forced to have me. I think she was RIGHT!!!
EyeOnYou Says: July 25th, 2009 at 6:15 AM picture 17…a woman in a beige jacket standing right behind (to the left) of Palin…anyone know who that is?
Interesting that she’s got the jacket zipped/buttoned up though, on a July day in southcentral Alaska. It doesn’t look THAT cold. In fact, I wonder if the reason Palin, Piper, the blonde gal in the black jacket nex to Palin, etc. were all in sweatshirts or jackets is that they were wearing bulletproof vests?
———————————-
Perhaps she’s 7 months pregnant and hasn’t announced it yet.
I can’t see how she can get military support.. I mean the dudes in the forces may be hungry for some down home high heeled girl with pom poms cheering them on but hello?

RE: choice – did you see the story on HuffPo about the guy – Deomcratic congressman? Not sure, but he belongs to the Demo pro-choice group & was kicked out because he favors contraceptives?
No abortion and no contraceptives?
This is where I lose it.
Sincere thanks AKM for all your wonderful writings / photos.
Following all the news on Alaska’s blight…Sarah Palin, I must say. It has been a great comic strip…the very best this Canadian gal of 76 years has read or seen displayed.
Keep up with the great job…I’m sure there is much more to come…..over the next year or so.
I suggest that the AFT was meant to serve multiple purposes. One of which was what to do with private donations and property mailed to them at their home, and how to capitalize on contributions offered verbally. Ya can’t just hand a politician a check.
I’ve had experience with willing donors, but lack of vehicle with which to accept donations.
I’m DIZZY!
Make it STOP!
I wanna get OFF!
wow, that sure would bum all the palinbots out if the trust had to be dissolved and all the money given to charity. Oh, charity, that would be great.
Guess we figure out how to get the trust dissolved, but don’t have a clue as to where to begin.
As I was reading AKPetMoms’ pictures and story about the picnic yesterday I was reminded of probably the first story that AKM wrote that pulled me into Mudflats. It was the one of the Republican Fundraiser in Anchorage where $arah did her speech, and AKM wrote ” Into the Belly of the Beast ”
AKPetMoms experience yesterday had some similarities to that story. She was kind of going in there ‘ undercover ‘ to take the pics and tell the story of what was going on there. Sort of a young AKM protege of sorts and of course the results showing up on Mudflats for that final connection to AKM. Nice.
In an analogy ,kind of like a Star Wars, young Luke Skywalker, training and learning from the Jedi Master. I’ll bet there will be a lot of Luke Skywalkers in attendance at Netroots Nation. 19 yo Ian being just one of them.
Back to the ” Belly of the Beast” Story. That one had me hooked… I had to find out more about what was going on and why $arah who was now on the ticket should never gain political power. AKM’s radio interview this week with Brad from Brad Blog retelling the story of her first ever post that got 8 total comments…. and AKM was THRILLED!!!….had me thinking that I need to go ‘ back in time’ and read what that very first story was about. I needed to know so I would understand Mudflats history, the progression ,and how it all came about. What was the post about, how was it written, are there similarities to what AKM is writing now.
And now AKM’s post this morning about ” Time Machine to one Year Ago”.
I will definitely be going back into that Time Machine and the Archives to read those first stories AKM wrote. My curiosity has certainly got the better of me now and this Time Machine post is saying ” Do it… NOW”
With all of the GREAT stories that AKM has posted the question I will continue to ask myself ( until I read the archives ) is how could AKM ‘ not ‘ think readers would all be interested. The talent had to be there all along and I am sure AKM has improved along the way but they journey back in time will be interesting. I will enjoy the reading and the journey.
I also want to read what those first 8 comments were because THAT is what got the ball rolling. Sort of ‘ Magical Mystery Tour’.
It will be Fun.

Is it imperative that the state of AK dissolve the trust some time after the Gov. quits tomorrow, or can they just drag their feet until the 2 year ban on the Governor-soon-to-be-ex-Gov using the trust has expired, and she can then take the money?
Can Kristan Cole (illegally) sequester the money away somewhere that the state of AK can’t find it, if a dissolution of the trust is ordered, like the proverbial “off shore account”?
Who designates a charity that the trust funds would go to, if the dissolution order is successfully followed through?
http://progressivealaska.blogspot.com/2009/07/saturday-alaska-progressive-blog_25.html
interesting post about the ADN, grimes, etc….
JHop#134 – “the state of AK can dissolve the trust”
How? In essence, it’s a bank account; funds on deposit with a financial institution somewhere. How would the State of Alaska have authority?
The state can publicly “divest” itself of any interest, sever any perceived relationship with the Office of the Governor. But it’s Sarah’s personal trust fund.
what 2 year ban on palin using the money?
cole can’t sequester the money (legally, at least) without a disclosure of some sort. she has to account for the money. and she is actually charged with investing the funds to make profits for the trust.
the trustee designates the charities the funds could be disbursed to (yes, she can choose to be very shady about that).
Palin’s has a future as the new BUMPITS GAL!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9NOUne9vUk
Gee, it sounds nice that the funds could be given to charity, but Sarah would think it charitable to contribute to her whacko political dominionist church. If the funds are determined to go to charity, it should be for food and health care, not to fundies!
Alaska’s Good- Bye song to Sarah Palin (my give a damn’s busted)
Well, you filled up our heads with so many lies.
You twisted our hearts till somethin’ snapped inside.
We’d like to give it one more try,
But our give-a-damn’s busted.
You can crawl back home, say you were wrong;
Stand out in the yard and cry all night long.
Well, go ahead and water the lawn:
Our give-a-damn’s busted.
We really wanna care.
We wanna feel somethin’.
Let us dig a little deeper:.
No, sorry: nothin’.
You can say you’ve got issues, you can say you’re a victim.
It’s all the media’s fault,I mean after all you didn’t pick ‘em.
Maybe somebody else has got time to listen:
Our give-a-damn’s busted.
Well, your therapist says it was all a mistake:
A product of the Prozac and your co-dependent ways.
So who’s your enabler these days?
Our give-a-damn’s busted.
We really wanna care.
We wanna feel somethin’.
Let us dig a little deeper:.
No, still nothin’.
It’s a desperate situation, no tellin’ what you’ll do.
If we don’t believe you, you say your governorship is through.
C’mon, give us somethin’ we can use:
Our give-a-damn’s busted.
Well, we really wanna care.
We wanna feel somethin’.
Let us dig a little deeper:
No, Man sorry.
Just nothin’, you know.
You’ve really done it this time, ha, ha.
Our give-a-damn’s busted.
P.S. My Give a Damn’s Busted, really IS a song…………
#147 JHop. I think as trustee and signatory authority of a trust account, Kristen Cole can make any decision she wants about that money. She established it.
This is not an inheritance being held “in trust”, not a probate matter, there are no legal binders, nothing court-ordered, no oversight, no required reporting.
That I can tell.
The question that I think of is: does she have a board of trustee?
It still ticks me that she made that $25,000 donation to the Hub Juneau Teen Christian Center with taxpayer funds so they can teach more teens to be “spiritual warriors” to further the Seven Mountains crap.
JHop, just to be clear, my question on the state’s authority to dissolve Sarah’s trust (#146) is a literal question, not an argument.
I’d like to hear your thoughts?
hey! Phil made me famous at PA!
JHop:
I think the “2-year prohibition” is referencing the fact that the EBEA applies to Gov and Lt Gov for 2 years after their departure from office, regardless of the circumstance.
By the way, THANK YOU for all you hard work on many issues here!

Y’know how , when you’re at a really great buffet your eyes and appetite are bigger than your stomach and even though you know this fact full well goin’ in, you’re not going to listen to your stomach until you absolutely must because otherwise it’s going to turn ugly?
Well my brain just hit that point a moment ago when I jumped over to the great link JHop posted. I was reading and goin’, ” o this is just scrumdillyicious ” and suddenly my brain went in to full out McQuitter mode, mid-read, refusing to recognize even one more word and it said, quite clearly , “if you don’t stop trying to digest new Palin info right this very moment….well…. I just can’t say for sure what will happen but it won’t be nice and I can’t guarantee that we’ll be on speaking terms in the morning.”
For the rest of the day I’m done analyzing and am shifting gears to reading and enjoying clever posts.
Let the Screen Door Party cocktail hour begin!
justafarmer, being famous is far nicer than being infamous like $arah. =) And your comment on ADN was a great one too.
It’s been linked above, but I’m going to do it again, because Phil from Progressive Alaska has really posted a good one. And it’s part I, so more to come!!! It really hits on what we continually discuss – the misinformation that is repeated by the press (ADN)
http://progressivealaska.blogspot.com/
Justafarmer – I have not yet been to Phil’s blog to find out why you are famous, so I made up my own reason:
“Justafarmer is the one person who has the ability to hear the most silent of farts and identify them prior to the point where they just plain stink. She is also adept at calling out the actual sh*t reported regarding bathroom stories – all this fame garnered by covering the Anchorage hearings on equal rights.
Once the ordinance is passed, we anticipate that Justafarmer will be nominated for a Mudflats ‘justafarter’ live blogging award.”
Having just seen that Andree;s complaint about collecting salary while out of state to run for VP has been thrown out, I have a silly thought….the documents show that Sarah signed off to being off-duty at the start, and then “return to duty” when the campaign ended. 1) is this enough to establish that she had signed over to the LT to run the state or not ? a) if it is, then would that invalidate any laws that she signed during the campaign, as the LT should have signed, not her ? Now, wouldn’t THAT just create a WONDERFUL bit for the legislature to have to clean up ?
2) if it WASN’T enough, than what the repercussions for NOT turning over to the LT as mandated by the Alaskan Constitution ???
Are items one and two a “gotcha” either way ??? Busted for performing duties she’s not suppose to, or busted for NOT performing the duties she suppose to ??
@Lori:
bwahahahahaaahahaaa!
thanks!
Bristol, Tripp, Ivy Frye and Trig were all hanging out on the lawn away from the weenie service tent. Piper joined them after serving dogs. Other Palin friends and perhaps fam were w/this group but I don’t know what Palin’s sisters look like, so not sure who the others in this group were.
Still, no Willow and no Todd. Perhaps Todd is fishing and Willow is helping him. Not certain.
Re: Phil Munger’s article. Thank you, JHop, for that link. It was an excellent read. One thing that struck me about the ADN was their rude, unprofessional responses to some of the posters here who cancelled their subscriptions because of the Grime’s piece. The response was something along the lines of “So, you are telling me that you are cancelling your subscription just because you don’t agree with something we printed?” This is a gross understatement, and the argumentative tone was not what I would have expected from a professional responding to subscriber’s complaint. Not to mention the fact that the ADN seemed, on the surface, to condone the viscious diatribe penned by Grimes.
Egads, if I had to eat a hot dog that she touched I’d be sick for a week. Blach!

@ JHop: Thanks for the Phil Munger link. Didn’t know I’d been quoted.
Just a quick comment from the HuffPo re: the Republican’s arguing if $P is going to make it further in national politics:
“My question to any Republican Governor, Senator, Congressman or Congresswoman, will you state that Sarah Palin is more qualified than YOU are to be the Leader of the Party?”
Re: Palin dumping Todd. Hmm. I had not considered that. However, Little Miss Sarah’s head has been turned by all of those slobbering, drooling old lecherous Republican men who have been cooing over her. She has been hobnobbing with celebrities and glittering men and women of substance. Todd is a bit more homespun. How well would a jilted Todd take being dumped? Could Palin withstand a jilted Todd with an axe to grind? I think that Todd is the one person in the world that Sarah cannot possibly afford to offend.
However, I’m sure Palin would spin it somewhat along these lines:
“I’m not quitting the marriage, I’m passing the ball. I’m a hard chargin’ point guard, passing the ball, but with my eyes on the goal, always movin’ and lookin’ forward toward that goal! And how about those brave men and women in uniform fightin’ for us all so we can be free just bein’ free Americans goin’ about our daily lives! God bless those troops who are fightin’ half way around the world while those socialist liberals are palin’ around with those terrorists. No, back here in the real America, with real Americans who know how to be American, I can be a better wife by being outside the home. Staying in as a lame duck wife is just what the gotcha liberal media elites would want me to do! I’m not gonna’ be a status quo, go with the flow kind of wife! No, I’m going to fight for my family from the outside. That’s where the real Mavericks are, on the outside. Only a dead fish goes with the flow.”
Oh, the Republican claws will be coming out now. Imagine the fights, her backers are Coultier, Limbaugh and Cheney… The GOP is so totally over.
OMG Gasman – my belly aches!

W/O going into my symptoms – basically, I have a cold, but am within walking distance from the Guv Picnic, about five blocks. Can’t make it to the picnic, but did a drive-by, rented a movie, came home to drink fluids and lay around. Will check back here later for full details of the picnic, but here is prelim report.
There are thousands in attendance, cars parked in front of my place, people walking to the picnic from the downtown area. I saw one woman walking with her pageant banner and tiara (must be a speaker, Ms. Alaska?). Food line- people really must want free food, because its so long, its not worth it IMO. I saw one television station van, but it was hard to view, drive, and not run over pedestrians.
A tour bus arrived, and a big red bus with Alaska Youth Military Academy logo on the side, saw one youth group in uniforms walking away, a live band on stage, and various vendor booths and homeless population in attendance per usual. I would say at least one quarter of the attendance were tourists, judging from attire and looks on their faces. Although flocks of people were walking to the venue, there were people leaving, probably ate their hot dog and decided there were better things to do… (thats kind of how I felt- I agree with prior comment that I surely wouldn’t want to eat a hot dog made by SP, not sure if I want to be breathing the same air, it would make me sick-er.)
Can’t wait to hear AKM’s report, and Phil’s and so on… The Health Reform Rally/Meeting was also setting up for their 1-3 meet-up.
And not to forget the famous Dr. Chill and the famous attorney JHop. Yep, I have been palling around with some very famous people.

WakeupAmerica — re asking for Wasilla zip code for poll –
People will realize soon enough that these online polls are meaningless.
___________
Usually I’d agree but a neighbor pointed out some AOL polls – 6 in total – directed towards Sarah Palin, her “brand,” and her future. Nearly all of the responses from the subscribers to the neocon-leaning ISP are going 60 – 30 AGAINST her!! Those are polls I like!
oops… guess the spam algorithm didn’t like my comments asking people to stop making snarky comments about the Palin girls. Oh well.
Gasman @167: Don’t be surprised if you hear your words, horribly mangled, in a speech from SP in the near future.
With no citation of source, of course.
re califpat @173: you are special. Never forget that.
Sauerkraut – I KNEW it would get a Patriot fan upset! It was like the time I saw Todd in a photo wearing a shirt from my University. It was a very very very sad day for me.
the only thing i meant by “the state can dissolve the trust” is that if the DA brought an action, the state is the only body that can actually force dissolution. no one else has standing. all trusts, no matter if in a probate matter, etc., still must abide by the trust laws of the state.
According to the statute, in some instances, EBEA applies to former officials. i didn’t know about a 2 year ban. interesting…
Gasman #167 – Re: Todd – I agree with you, Todd is more homespun and doesn’t seem comfortable with the media attention his wife craves. Sarah looks like she can’t wait to get out of Alaska. She quit so she could be free to travel around in the lower 48′s without constraints but I’m wondering who will be taking care of Trig? No wonder Bristol got knocked-up.
This is my first post after more than 10 months of daily, not to be missed viewing! I don’t remember whether it has ever come up but speaking of the military and of Todd: Was Todd ever in the military?

the fact that we are even questioning this, especially in the manner that we are, shows the ethical problem with a governor having a trust such as AFT.

We understand; too bad she does not.
But at least we can hear the bells a-ringing.. ding dong. …
Here in Batavia NY, in our little daily paper called the Daily News, SP has hit the Insight Column The article is titled
Insights: Why Sarah Palin Symbolizes the Great Divide…
.the article focuses on how the birth of Trig is why people “attack” SP is because she now sets us up for having to face whether we would abort or give birth to a special needs child as SP chose to give birth. CRAZY, the author is Pastor of The Church of Living Waters, a charismatic, evangelical church. I would love if everyone would go to the newspaper website and comment…the website is http://thedailynewsonline.com/?rss=opinion/editorials I am trying to set this up as a link…never did that before and my children are not home so I’m on my own…will continue this effort, please go to website and comment…I’d love if we could have a little MUDFLATTERS showing in my local city and set this fella straight Thank you

The only reason she is wearing that sweatshirt is that “Patriot” is in big letters–The “New England” part is small. She thinks she’s showing us what a true “Patriot” she is Stupid.
Mudpups rock, ain’t no doubt about it!
What I can’t figure out and hopefully someone will explain to me:
Why is $arah saying she didn’t take any money from the trust like there is something wrong with it? That is what it was set up for?.
Why was it set up if she isn’t going to take the money?
Why is the site still up if she isn’t going to take the money?
Since it was set up for her as governor, will she be able to take the money?
barricuda78, I did read it, but was put off by the personal information required to register.
Hey Polly – thanks for the Mudpup report! Take it easy, I’m sure you are not missing a thing!
Paging samper and Duncan!
After our talk about weenies on the picnic thread, just LOOK what I stumbled on on the series of tubes today:
Should Hot Dogs Carry Warning Labels? http://www.seriouseats.com/2009/07/should-hot-dogs-carry-warning-labels.html?ref=se-bb1
Maybe we should petiton to have XINO carry a warning label.
zyggy – good questions. i’ll take a stab, although i have similar questions myself. in my opinion:
1. i think her current reaction is merely bad acting. you are right; she should not be, all of a sudden, pretending like taking money from that trust is like asking for herpes. there is too much evidence to show her previous knowledge/approval of it, to now act oblivious and horrified that she could be associated with it.
2. it was set up to give her money. no other reason whatsoever. that’s why her clueless act is so weird. the way the trust was set up, no one except her, her family, and staff can benefit. so i mean, who is she trying to throw under the bus at this point? i don’t understand the (over)reactions by cole, van flein, palin, her whole little team of crooks and cohorts.
3. why is the site still up? to continue collecting money. that’s it. they are going to fight this to the end. the trust is written very ambiguously. the matter is only in the hands of the personnel board. they want this trust. badly. i think it is why she resigned. they are not just going to close shop. i think they are struggling with how to handle this, now that the report has been leaked.
4. i do not know if she will be able to keep the money. but i know that once she resigns, the trust loses it’s purpose. so eventually, it will have to be dissolved.
Daughter and I popped in on start of the Anch picnic. Long food lines so we left after the opening ceremony. Sarah kept her rambling shorter than usual. Surprise–no kids on stage! Didn’t see any family, although they may have been getting ready to serve food. Parnell, with wife Sandy, was modest and spoke briefly in complete sentences. No signs visible. One table had some Sarah pics and a poster with Trig. I assume they were for sale, but as we left I only saw one person proudly clutching her prizes.
There were several pageant winners decked out in full regalia, including Miss Alaska, in the crowd. We shuddered to overhear two little beauty clones (9-11, maybe) who were adjusting their tiaras just prior to the Queen’s appearance. “I want to look pretty for (or like) Sarah.” Gag!
I proudly wore my Mudflats pin, but sadly got no response positive or negative to the yellow boots. Of course, most there are oblivious. I liked the idea of going through the chow line to have Sarah serve me, as I’m sure she’d recognize it, but couldn’t stand in line for an hour.
Less than 25 hours to go…what a relief!
Yeh, Thanks for reading it, I don’t think they publish the personal info, only your member name, but that’s why I was hesitant also, this is a small town and I run a small business which could cause me some problems if my name was ever published… thanks
hey califpat been shouting out to you. glad you are ok…
thanks for the report, AKaurora!
Did you check out the health care rally at all?

As She Steps Down, Palin Vows to Reclaim Ethics Fight
By Kimberly Kindy and Philip Rucker
Washington Post Staff Writers
Saturday, July 25, 2009
ANCHORAGE — Sarah Palin, who rose from obscurity to become Alaska’s governor three years ago, began her career as a combative whistleblower crusading against state political corruption. She accused GOP leaders of violating ethics laws, then publicized details of the confidential investigations. Now, as Palin prepares to step down Sunday, 18 months before the end of her term, she vows to resurrect her early crusader image on a national stage, even as she complains that she has been saddled with what she calls “frivolous” ethics complaints and legal bills.
“I’m not leaving the governorship because of any particular ethics complaint. Rather, I have explained that the millions of dollars spent by the state and the diversion of resources to address politically inspired records requests, personnel board costs and wasting staff time is unnecessary and harmful to the state,” Palin said in written comments to The Washington Post. “I will take the battle nationally and I won’t shy away from challenging the powerful, the entrenched, the corrupt and anyone standing in the way of getting our country back on the right track.” Palin, 45, sees state ethics reform as her lasting legacy. “We cleaned up previously accepted unethical actions,” she wrote in a farewell column to Alaskans on her Web site.”
what a hypocrite…
thank jhop for responding to my questions. I too think she resigned to get at all that money. Can they re-write the trust so the money can be handed out to a non governor Palin?
The over reacting of all of them really does make the trust look fishy. Guess everyone around Palin wants their name on the billboard too.
I do think Palin will throw everyone under the bus and find new friends and as soon as she uses them, they too will be under the bus with all the other bodies.
As a transplanted New Englander, I am HIGHLY offended to see Palin wearing a Patriots sweatshirt as a symbol of her “patriotism”. Sarah, leave my team out of your political ambitions. This is what she does best – aligning herself with things that people care about (such as the military, Downs kids, anti choice groups, etc) and then using that to advance her own agenda, making people feel like she really CARES about them and their interest group.
@Bubbles: Thanks for the shout out, but I think you meant Polly who is not feeling well. Much appreciated though.
Polly: Thanks for taking one for the team. Now get some rest and get better.
JHop: I just finished with one of my Saturday clients who is an administrative law judge up here. She and I were celebrating Sarah’s departure and I told her about your analysis. Do you mind if I share it with her? She said she would love to see it and would be happy to give me her opinions.
She also said that they all have to take down all of their pictures of SP and “turn them in” to the state and be signed off that they turned them in. She thinks it is so that people don’t try to sell them on E-bay. I think that is hysterical.
She thought that the funniest thing was that she got a “personal” invite to all gov goodbye picnics but that “personal” invite was a mass e-mailing. Hilarious. She said “usually when a I get a personal and special invitation to something special it comes on an embossed, signed card”.
The new state letterhead template is already out as well.
Ahhhhh–it’s good to be Alaskan today.
i can’t stand the patriots or red sox, but simply as a sports fan, i am offended that she is using a team for self-promotion. only because she (shallowly) thinks it looks good (like crumpling the flag in her runner’s world shot). she could not name one person on the patriots. anyone. ever. in the history of the team.
(ps; sorry far from fenway. in full disclosure, i am a huge yankees & giants fan)
love my dogs – by all means, share away. i can send you the full, unedited version in an email if you want.
Far from Fenway: She’ll be in BIG trouble if she wears anything with the Red Sox logo-don’tcha think?
JHop: The full version in an e-mail would be awesome. Thanks.
Her initial take on the whole thing is “it probably isn’t illegal, per se, but on face value it sure doesn’t look good”. She hasn’t looked at it as closely as you have though.
She, of course, can’t give an official position on anything political though because she is expected to stay fair and impartial (as a judge). All of her opinions to me will probably be confidential. I AM interested to hear her take on it though.
@208 JHop
“Sarah Palin … publicized details of the confidential investigations”
delicious irony
I think she is wearing the Patriots sweatshirt for the value of the word itself, not because she is a fan of the team.
polly“` i understand you are under the weather. i am sorry and hope you will feel better very soon. thanks califpat for telling me…love bubs….and where is canadian neighbor?
lovemydogs- sent.
and i agree with your judge friend. the trust looks horrible, from an ethical standpoint. but i think it will be very hard to pin her with criminal activity simply because of the trust, on its face. how she spent (or didn’t spend) the money opens her up for an entirely different line of questioning, though. we don’t have enough information at this point to be able to speculate with any validity. so i am very curious….
Hey all AK mudflatters,
A big thanks for going into the trenchesand reporting back to us. It just is not the same hearing it on the news. Hi sis!

What I can’t figure out and hopefully someone will explain to me:
* ** * ** * ** * ** * ** * ** *
I’ll take my stab.
1. When this complaint was first filed, shortly after the fund was set up, the PB reccommended (rather than actually froze the account) that no monies be dispersed, just in case it went against her. Not actually taking any money out gives you the wiggle room to say “I did not actually benefit”.
2. I believe she believed her lawyers when they said it was all totally legal. And apparently it is, except under AK Ethics laws. IMO, the big-time lawyers didn’t think AK ethics laws would be as restrictive as they apparently are and didn’t really do the work to bother checking.
3. Because why not rake in all you can? And she fully expected (still expects?) the judgement of the PB to come back in her favor.
However, if the site is still up on Monday and hasn’t been changed to reflect her new status, that could be problematic.
4. It was set up to cover things relating to her actions as governor, so yes, at some point, probably not in the too distant future, the fund will need to be dissoved.
As for getting any money out, she probably physically can, through Kristan Cole, but since the PB hasn’t made an official ruling in her favor, it would be the surest way to ruin what reputation she has left.
Tom Daniel spells it out pretty clearly in his report. He suggested if she dissolved it voluntarily, there could be no ethic violation because she hadn’t ‘gotten’ anything (assuming nothing’s been paid on her behalf yet).
Otherwise, my understanding (from Daniel’s report) is it goes to a hearing,
I also understand (from reading somewhere) that there is not a open time frame on this, so I expect we’ll see headlines by as early as the end of the week that either say she’s dissolving th AFT, or announcing when/where the first hearings will be.
And then the enevitable barrage of “info leaked, can’t get a fair trial” twitters, press statements, letters to editors, guest appearances on radio shows etc. will flood over us like the locust plague.
Pass me the dramamine, please. Or, the ‘Off!”.
Mr. Munger – great post; thank you for trying to hold the ADN accountable.
terpsichore – well said.
i think there is still a lot we will learn about the AFT….
I read the report too, and what Daniel had to offer, but the PB may not see it that way, though they should. Even if they dismiss his report, Palin is no longer a governor, and shouldn’t be able to take the money. Right now it sounds like she screwed either way.
Phil Munger – Thank you for that article, it is brilliant and am looking forward to reading the next installment.
The crazy thing is, all the little palinbots are convinced the ADN is anti Palin and only writes hit pieces. Go figure!.
justafarmer–No I didn’t get to the health rally. I think it was to start after I left the Park Strip.
CougInPortland–I think Parnell is a bit of a wimp, but he did go to law school and is no narcissist. I may not agree with what he says, but I think we will at least know what he is saying.
I don’t see HOW the Personnel Board could rule anyway different than Daniel did.
barracudo78 @185
I went to your newspaper’s site and read the pastor’s op-ed on Sarah and the Great Divide (or something close to that.) Sounded familiar. Hm-m-m. When it doubt- take it to the google.
I think the good pastor read this politico article http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0709/25044.html that two men wrote claiming that we all hate her because she didn’t abort Trigg, and that seeing disabled people makes us uncomfortable and that is why we hate her..blah, blah, blah.
So, I did leave a comment, suggesting that the pastor had read that article and all three of them are wrong. I gave my reasons in my best “outraged conservative” voice.
Apparently all comments are moderated by a real person, and there was only one comment there. I don’t normally pee in the sandboxes of others, but that pastor was just a little to sanctimonious to be putting an op-ed in a paper. Maybe he is on the “press/media” mountain committee? (Reference to the 7 mountains he and his kind are trying to conquer.)
Well, it’s certainly been some year. Appreciating the yellow boots.
JHop: Got it, thanks.
No offense to you, I am just curious to see what another legal mind, who knows Alaska law, thinks. And it is always interesting to see the take of a judge on things. Esp. a liberal one.
no, no offense taken at all! i am curious too. please share when you find out…
Good luck to Cathy in Texas, you quitter you. Two antlers up!!
JHop – Love that Boston – NY rivalry! Grew up in the Boston area when both the Red Sox and Patriots stunk. Back then it was all Celtics and Bruins. Grateful that I’ve lived long enough to see the Bosox win a World Series (2 even!) – lots of die hard fans never got to see the dream come true. That first world series title in which they had to come from behind in the playoffs 3 games to 0 against the Yankees was some of the finest baseball ever! Regardless of the winner, when Boston plays NY it’s ALWAYS a show.
Palin exit sparks fierce Alaska debate (2 pages)
7/25/09 6:00 PM EDT
“Carroll scoffed at Palin’s contention that she’s stepping down for the good of Alaska: “That’s just ridiculous – I don’t think anybody believes that,” he said.”
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0709/25407.html
Phil Munger: Great write-up. I read your blog all of the time. I don’t comment there because mudflats is about all I can take in the comment dept (not enough time).
I find it very sad that newspapers are dying. ADN looks positively liberal compared to what they do in our rag down here on the Peninsula (and I have friends who work for them). They are completely driven by the almighty dollar and sometimes the political slant of the operating managers. I think that the 24 hour news cycle is also part of the problem. No one in the media bothers to fact check anymore.
My mother was a newspaper writer so I know how political a newsroom can be. But it does seem the profession of being an objective and accurate reporter is a dying breed. It is particularly bad in this state. The last time the ADN asked if I wanted a subscription and I explained to the salesperson on the phone why I do NOT subscribe, that poor lady got an earful.
Thanks for the invite to the party. I wish I didn’t live so far away (and that it didn’t take 2 hours to get across the only bridge north from my house–what’s up with construction in the middle of fishing season?).
I have to admit I remain bewildered as to why the RepoTaliban still flaunt Sarah.
She is so damaged, what lasting good can she do them?
There are other evangilicals they can turn to who are more articulate and lest soiled.
If they continue to put her forward they do so with the same intentions that had with Qualyle and Duhbya, brainless puppets who will say whatever they are told to say and do whatever they are told to say and are “pretty.”
Thanks Polly for your report. I had to skip Anchorage today as well to deal with this nasty flu…might get in the car and drive to FBX tonight if I feel better.
Just kidding!
Doesn’t the Juneau the State Capitol get a Gov picnic??
By my calculations the Anchorage festivities were over about an hour ago.
( It was till 3:00 pm.. Right AK time )
I would guess that there will be some pictures being put up and shared by all of the AK progressive blogs… soon. Tick… tick…. tick…. tick
(sort of impatient now )
Doesn’t the Juneau the State Capitol get a Gov picnic??
————-
No we don’t…
We get some kind of prayer breakfast in the dead of winter…
I had a conversation with someone the other day and we wondered if Palin would have been noticed at all if women had to wear burkas (sp?).
zyggy, well, I wouldn’t want to be in her shoes (they’d hurt my feet!). Shannyn has a great analogy of the situation, involving a jar, a banana and a monkey, if you haven’t read, you should.
Seagull – yep, that’s the rub. The PB has been happy to rubber stamp T. Daniel’s opinion five times, their not taking his counsel into consideration for this one would look really really bad. So either Sarah takes the ‘deal’ or it goes to hearing. That seems to be what must happen by law.
Oh, and to actually get this kinda back on topic, what I think is interesting is that, after a year, AKM’s brief analysis of SP was spot-on. People have said she changed after the campaign, but certainly not in her core way of doing things; All of this latest is exactly what we would expect of her.
Expect? Yes. Like, admire, encourage, wish to emulate? No.
thank you for your help HistoryGoddess, I’ll read your comment and hopefully others will comment as well…I plan on putting together a comment , I thought many of you here are more knowledgeable than I and I could use your help in this matter The church the pastor is affiliated with is a fringe church
I don’t normally read the local newspaper(a time thing), but I like to get on top of these things early, this is a fairly conservative city
Thank you again…
If she thinks wearing a Patriots sweatshirt is gonna help her in Boston, she should start reading The Phoenix: interesting article on her “brand” http://thephoenix.com/Boston/News/86530-Sarah-Palin-Inc/
Congratulations to Alaska, she is just about gone.
Unfortunately I still think she’ll be in the news for the rest of us/all of us. I keep hoping she will disappear but I can only imagine her new tests an other insane things she may do. I think she is going to become more annoying.
Here’s an article on Sarahs books. It has some more suggestions for the title.
http://www.examiner.com/x-17138-Portland-Nonpartisan-Examiner~y2009m7d25-Some-suggestions-for-bailin-Palins-new-book?#comments
@Marnie, she may be brainless, but she is no puppet. Just ask the McCain campaign. On the other hand, she could be a puppet in the sense that something almost subliminal is controlling her, like her religious indoctrination. This is the kind of thing which would compel her to do their duty without her knowing it because she has bought into the storyline. She only does what SHE thinks is right, but she may well be programmed. JMHO.

To add to my post at 250, and possibly bore Mudpups into a stupor
, we all know SP is a grifter. She reminds me of the Jim and Tammy Fayes of the world..also, too, the Ted Haggards. they use their bully pulpits to profit themselves while disseminating their messages of hate. So classically SP.
Hey Mudpups sitting in my hotel room in Fairbanks, stuck in town until Monday so I will attempt to go to the picnic. Though I don’t know many people in Fairbanks and will be attending alone.. well with my two wind up dogs (toy poodle and tiny shizu)
Are any other mudpuppies going to be there?
I am still debating if I should make a sign I have several ideas.
I will have my cell phone and internet so I can try to post some impressions.
I saw a CNN report re: Wasilla and Anchorage picnics. What happenned to you guys that were going to bring signs? Lemon asked the reporter (Welch?) about supporters etc. and the response was the only people w/signs were Palin 2012 although some people interviewed said they just were glad she was going away. What a wasted opportunity to have shown Americans that all Alaskans are not stupid and don’t support Palin )o:
Sure hope Fairbanks picnic mudflatters will have signs and something organized to get the word out and make us proud. Last chance guys!
Rubber Room – yes! make a sign, funny about timing of post (o: Hope others get in touch with you so you are not by your lonesome. Wish I could be there for moral support (and sign carriage!)
@JHop — Re: the flag in Runners World. I’ve been aggravated with the American Legion for forty years, because the national organization is always getting involved in “patriotic” issues instead of veterans’ affairs (I am a vet, albeit a short-timer).
Lately, my irritation has increased because of their hypocrisy of silence. If Palin were a prominent Democrat, I’m sure they would have been all over her for desecrating the flag by laying it over furniture, and using it as a prop. Similarly, if Keith Olbermann did a bit that involved distorting the flag (al a Glenn Beck), they would be spouting outrage.
Sorry. Even though I referenced you, it’s just because your remark reminded me. No action required. I’m just pissed off.
Hi – seems like the picnics are going smoothly without me. Still i venture that they have a somber tone, Palin has not say anything outrageous yet or we have hear by now.
Rubber Room, go and be brave! Look at what AKPetMom did! Make a sign if you want…or not. Just take pictures. We will appreciate all you do! {{{hugs}}}
Shannyn on the radio tonight?
I will do my best to represent Mudpups,
strangelet, length of time for being a vet is not what counts. You are a VET, plain and simple. Your opinion is greatly appreciated. Thank you for all you did for us and for all you are doing in behalf of other veterans. Your outrage is justified, IMHO.
New thread.
Rubber Room, be careful and take bear spray for your wind-up pups.
Be careful Rubber room..Hope your puppies are Ok..Did I read that you had to take the to the Veterinarian. Would love to see pictures.

I’m uncertain if this question has been brought up recently, but why does Mrs. Palin talk so much about the military? I have ambulance syndrome with her Twitters and am dumbfounded, is she hoping for some sort of job offer? I understand her son is in Iraq, but really.
On West Coast Live on NPR this weekend, Mort Sahl said when Sarah Palin spoke at a Home Depot parking lot during the fall ’08 campaign, she was the only person in the lot that Home Depot wouldn’t hire.
The audience LOVED that joke.

It looks like this weekend is part of what Alaska does to honor the military each year…but sarah palin does do alot to mention her church warrior army on a on going basis.
I think it’s about appeal. It’s universally appealing, it’s worked before with a variety of audiences, and I think it’s her default when she’s anxious about criticism.
Nobody dares snark off at her, when military stuff is invoked. And yeah, zyggy, she doesn’t have to think too hard. As long as she doesn’t talk about Kosovo, troops air travel, etc etc.
follow Snoskred’s instructions at 275! Three of us are there!
Two of our friends from Tennessee discuss Sarah’s departure:

Strangelet – I’m with you, I’m very pissed off about $P’s abuse of the American Flag – my Flag, too -
I wasn’t in the Service, but I worked for DoD for 12 years, civil service and I’ve been a US citizen ALL my life.
Why does she get a free ride? I would never do to the flag what she has done, even if I believe a US citizen has a right to burn the flag. I wear a flag pin but did not put one on my car in 2001 because I didn’t want it to get ragged.
Arrrrgggghh! I am soooo pisssed at her.
strangelet @ 257 & Bretta @ 282 ~ One of the many, many many, wonderful things about this country is that there are no laws mandating how we treat one of its most visible and recognizable symbols: our flag. I, for one, am profoundly grateful for that.
By *custom*, there are certain ways in which we treat OUR flag; by tradition and mutual consent, WE have decided how to honor the symbol. No *laws* tell us how…it is left up to our individual sense of decency and understanding of the flag’s symbolism (along with tradition and custom) that dictates where, when, and *how* WE display the flag. I love that about our country.
As I said, I’m soooo glad there are no laws dictating *how* to treat the flag; that it is by *mutual agreement* that WE have decided the ‘proper’ ways to display it with dignity and honor. And respect – *always* respect.
I guess, though, if you (among other whack-brained things) are a “maverick” and insist on not going “with the flow,” ANY old manner of stage-propping the flag will be just fine – right Ms. Palin? ‘Convention’ and the sensibilities of ‘ordinary’ citizens towards OUR flag, be damned… beth.
@ Lori in LA:
“Once the ordinance is passed, we anticipate that Justafarmer will be nominated for a Mudflats ‘justafarter’ live blogging award.”
HEAR, HEAR!!! I heartily second that nomination!!!!!!!

Get on the ROAD TO PITTSBURGH! RSVP’s have come in so far from South Carolina, North Carolina, Michigan, Washington D.C., New York, California, and Connecticut.
Shouldn’t you be here to meet Our Beloved Leader AKM face to face too on her trip to the Lower 48?
@ Rubber Room:
I will be with you there in SPIRIT! In fact, if hub’s and my plans had been different by 2 days, I might have even been there with you for real!
Our ‘shopping city’ is Fbks, and we have to go in very soon to pick up some critical building supplies. Originally we would have been there on Sunday, but hub decided to wait a little longer.
Anyway …… YOU need to represent us! If you want, put “Eagle” in that sign!
Big thanks for bein’ there!
Hi All-
Was redirected to the Mudflats site by a big fan of the site. It’s refreshing to hear another perspective on ex-Gov. Sarah Palin (other than the media white wash) from someone living near enough to know what’s really going on.
Looking forward to reading up on the posts and seeing what comes up next!
Good health to all.
