Open Thread – Time Machine to One Year Ago
25 07 2009This is an image I used waaay back in the third week of July of last year. It made me laugh because it just shows how wrong you can be. I used it with the heading “Palin’s VP Prospects are Circling the Drain.” She had’t been tapped yet, and Troopergate was hitting the fan. “Who,” thought I, “would be stupid enough to choose her now? She’s clearly ethically-challenged and everyone knows it. So much for those VP chances!
I thought it might be fun to hop in the time machine and go back to July 21, 2008, almost exactly one year ago.
But now we’re going to have an investigation of not only a sitting governor, but a potential Vice Presidential candidate. Until now, Palin has been the darling of the right, and on McCain’s short list for VP running mate. She’s cute, she’s tough, she wears red suits, she’s a social conservative, she’s pro-life, she’s a woman, she’s a hockey mom with 5 kids, and most of all she’s squeaky squeaky clean! … Uh oh.
Truth is, her reputation for sweeping the state clean of corruption, and restoring ethics and transparency to government was the foundation on which all those other things rested. Take that away, and it all falls like a house of cards. McCain isn’t considering her as a running-mate to secure Alaska’s three electoral votes, that’s for sure. He wants her image. And now, that image is sullied, which means right about now her chances for the VP nod are circling the drain. In this election, no one can afford to be linked to another corrupt Republican….least of all a corrupt Republican.
Who would be stupid enough to hitch his wagon to that star? I guess we got our answer.

Congratulations to Alaska, she is just about gone.
Unfortunately I still think she’ll be in the news for the rest of us/all of us. I keep hoping she will disappear but I can only imagine her new tests an other insane things she may do. I think she is going to become more annoying.
Here’s an article on Sarahs books. It has some more suggestions for the title.

@Marnie, she may be brainless, but she is no puppet. Just ask the McCain campaign. On the other hand, she could be a puppet in the sense that something almost subliminal is controlling her, like her religious indoctrination. This is the kind of thing which would compel her to do their duty without her knowing it because she has bought into the storyline. She only does what SHE thinks is right, but she may well be programmed. JMHO.

Hi, pups — I’ve been out of touch for a few days, and am trying to catch up. I’ve read AKM’s posts, and the comments on this thread up to 150, so forgive me if I repeat something already covered.
Matthew Daly must be an AK stringer for AP. They couldn’t have someone on assignment this long. Without much expectation, I have emailed info dot ap dot org to complain about him.

To add to my post at 250, and possibly bore Mudpups into a stupor
, we all know SP is a grifter. She reminds me of the Jim and Tammy Fayes of the world..also, too, the Ted Haggards. they use their bully pulpits to profit themselves while disseminating their messages of hate. So classically SP.
July 25th, 2009 at 4:27 PM
Hey Mudpups sitting in my hotel room in Fairbanks, stuck in town until Monday so I will attempt to go to the picnic. Though I don’t know many people in Fairbanks and will be attending alone.. well with my two wind up dogs (toy poodle and tiny shizu)
Are any other mudpuppies going to be there?
I am still debating if I should make a sign I have several ideas.
I will have my cell phone and internet so I can try to post some impressions.
July 25th, 2009 at 4:29 PM
I saw a CNN report re: Wasilla and Anchorage picnics. What happenned to you guys that were going to bring signs? Lemon asked the reporter (Welch?) about supporters etc. and the response was the only people w/signs were Palin 2012 although some people interviewed said they just were glad she was going away. What a wasted opportunity to have shown Americans that all Alaskans are not stupid and don’t support Palin )o:
Sure hope Fairbanks picnic mudflatters will have signs and something organized to get the word out and make us proud. Last chance guys!
July 25th, 2009 at 4:32 PM
Rubber Room – yes! make a sign, funny about timing of post (o: Hope others get in touch with you so you are not by your lonesome. Wish I could be there for moral support (and sign carriage!)
July 25th, 2009 at 4:32 PM
@JHop — Re: the flag in Runners World. I’ve been aggravated with the American Legion for forty years, because the national organization is always getting involved in “patriotic” issues instead of veterans’ affairs (I am a vet, albeit a short-timer).
Lately, my irritation has increased because of their hypocrisy of silence. If Palin were a prominent Democrat, I’m sure they would have been all over her for desecrating the flag by laying it over furniture, and using it as a prop. Similarly, if Keith Olbermann did a bit that involved distorting the flag (al a Glenn Beck), they would be spouting outrage.
Sorry. Even though I referenced you, it’s just because your remark reminded me. No action required. I’m just pissed off.
July 25th, 2009 at 4:33 PM
Hi – seems like the picnics are going smoothly without me. Still i venture that they have a somber tone, Palin has not say anything outrageous yet or we have hear by now.
July 25th, 2009 at 4:35 PM
Rubber Room, go and be brave! Look at what AKPetMom did! Make a sign if you want…or not. Just take pictures. We will appreciate all you do! {{{hugs}}}
July 25th, 2009 at 4:38 PM
Shannyn on the radio tonight?
July 25th, 2009 at 4:39 PM
I will do my best to represent Mudpups,
July 25th, 2009 at 4:45 PM
strangelet, length of time for being a vet is not what counts. You are a VET, plain and simple. Your opinion is greatly appreciated. Thank you for all you did for us and for all you are doing in behalf of other veterans. Your outrage is justified, IMHO.

New thread.

Rubber Room, be careful and take bear spray for your wind-up pups.
July 25th, 2009 at 5:13 PM

July 25th, 2009 at 6:22 PM
or is this the playlist?
July 25th, 2009 at 6:29 PM
She’s driving to Fairbanks, playing music. Yay.
What a spaz. Either she or one of her kids is taunting.
There won’t be many people there at the picnic, aside from military base families.
But have fun, Sarah. You go, girl.
July 25th, 2009 at 6:52 PM
I have the perfect present for Sarah!

I’m uncertain if this question has been brought up recently, but why does Mrs. Palin talk so much about the military? I have ambulance syndrome with her Twitters and am dumbfounded, is she hoping for some sort of job offer? I understand her son is in Iraq, but really.
July 25th, 2009 at 7:43 PM
On West Coast Live on NPR this weekend, Mort Sahl said when Sarah Palin spoke at a Home Depot parking lot during the fall ‘08 campaign, she was the only person in the lot that Home Depot wouldn’t hire.
The audience LOVED that joke.

Hey, if you’re still here, did you have any damage from the tornado/storm tonight? I’m near Roch so I don’t know your area that well but it looked on the tv weather maps I was glued to that Batavia is pretty close to Corfu. Scary stuff that we’re not used to in WNY!
July 25th, 2009 at 7:58 PM

July 25th, 2009 at 8:17 PM
Glenda, I think she has very limited topics that she “feels” comfortable with, other topics would call for experience and studying, of which she doesn’t have.
July 25th, 2009 at 8:20 PM
Glenda.
““““““
It looks like this weekend is part of what Alaska does to honor the military each year…but sarah palin does do alot to mention her church warrior army on a on going basis.
July 25th, 2009 at 8:24 PM
I think it’s about appeal. It’s universally appealing, it’s worked before with a variety of audiences, and I think it’s her default when she’s anxious about criticism.
Nobody dares snark off at her, when military stuff is invoked. And yeah, zyggy, she doesn’t have to think too hard. As long as she doesn’t talk about Kosovo, troops air travel, etc etc.
July 25th, 2009 at 8:28 PM

Strangelet – I’m with you, I’m very pissed off about $P’s abuse of the American Flag – my Flag, too -
I wasn’t in the Service, but I worked for DoD for 12 years, civil service and I’ve been a US citizen ALL my life.
Why does she get a free ride? I would never do to the flag what she has done, even if I believe a US citizen has a right to burn the flag. I wear a flag pin but did not put one on my car in 2001 because I didn’t want it to get ragged.
Arrrrgggghh! I am soooo pisssed at her.
July 25th, 2009 at 10:01 PM
strangelet @ 257 & Bretta @ 282 ~ One of the many, many many, wonderful things about this country is that there are no laws mandating how we treat one of its most visible and recognizable symbols: our flag. I, for one, am profoundly grateful for that.
By *custom*, there are certain ways in which we treat OUR flag; by tradition and mutual consent, WE have decided how to honor the symbol. No *laws* tell us how…it is left up to our individual sense of decency and understanding of the flag’s symbolism (along with tradition and custom) that dictates where, when, and *how* WE display the flag. I love that about our country.
As I said, I’m soooo glad there are no laws dictating *how* to treat the flag; that it is by *mutual agreement* that WE have decided the ‘proper’ ways to display it with dignity and honor. And respect – *always* respect.
I guess, though, if you (among other whack-brained things) are a “maverick” and insist on not going “with the flow,” ANY old manner of stage-propping the flag will be just fine – right Ms. Palin? ‘Convention’ and the sensibilities of ‘ordinary’ citizens towards OUR flag, be damned… beth.

@ Rubber Room:
I will be with you there in SPIRIT! In fact, if hub’s and my plans had been different by 2 days, I might have even been there with you for real!
Our ’shopping city’ is Fbks, and we have to go in very soon to pick up some critical building supplies. Originally we would have been there on Sunday, but hub decided to wait a little longer.
Anyway …… YOU need to represent us! If you want, put “Eagle” in that sign!
Big thanks for bein’ there!

Hi All-
Was redirected to the Mudflats site by a big fan of the site. It’s refreshing to hear another perspective on ex-Gov. Sarah Palin (other than the media white wash) from someone living near enough to know what’s really going on.
Looking forward to reading up on the posts and seeing what comes up next!
Good health to all.
