Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Open Thread – What the…?

Last Saturday was ex-Governor Palin’s farewell stop in Anchorage. I spent the afternoon at the governor’s picnic, fighting my way through packs of tourists with cameras and cell phones, pressing in and trying to snap a picture of the governor. I was told to evacuate the condiment area by some sort of hired picnic security thug. I was overwhelmed by throngs of people wearing t-shirts with pictures of firearms, and wearing actual firearms with ammo clips in plain sight. There were lines, hundreds long waiting to get a hamburger on a wonder roll from Sarah Palin… It was really a sensory overload experience on multiple levels.

Then, I saw this:

wtf

My first thought was, “What the Hell is THAT?” I’ve sat through enough Anchorage Assembly meetings watching people from local area evangelical churches wear red as their color of solidarity to take 3 minutes at the podium and read Bible verses, and tell everyone that homosexuality is a choice and a sin and will rob us all of our freedoms, and bla bla bla. So after a dozen hours or more of watching the color red be further co-opted by the religious right, my first thought was that this thing was some sort of homophobic picnic mascot sent to infiltrate the crowd by Jerry Prevo.

Then, I realized, that it was probably a drop of blood… presumably to encourage donations to the blood bank? That’s what I assume, although I didn’t actually ask it what it was. From the look of the security guy, he wasn’t quite sure either. It did do a little sassy leg lift when I took its picture, though….so it appears to have a sense of humor, which the people at the Assembly meetings definitely did NOT.

So, this sort of screams for a caption. Any ideas?

All that security! Doesn’t Mrs Palin flatter herself? Personally, I would never touch her; she always looks to me as though she could do with a good wash. Ditto for her clothes.

And I certainly wouldn’t accept food from her!

Speaking of lack of hygiene, I see that at long last Americans might have better than third world food hygiene standards.

House passes far-reaching food safety bill

Farm-state members had argued that the bill would be too invasive on farms and had pushed colleagues to vote against it as it was considered under a special procedure that requires a two-thirds vote. It was rejected Wednesday by a few votes.

Democrats scrambled to put the legislation back on the House floor Thursday under a rule that required a simple majority to pass. The vote was 283-142.

“Americans are dying because the Food and Drug Administration doesn’t have the authority to protect them,” said Michigan Rep. John Dingell, the bill’s sponsor and a long-serving Democrat who has been pushing for tougher standards for more than a decade.

It’s possible that ex-gov SP was considering to go, but felt she could get better offers with pay and just rudely dumped them. But, this whole affair seems curious, because Meg Stapleton, supposedly educated and learned as a political spokesperson, would have a clue how to keep her client’s image, reputation in the best light.

It might appear like MS is enabling her client, by letting these embarassing faux pas go on; it reminds me of a celebrity entourage who enable their partner/friend because they gain so much financially.

Here’s a good one for you guys. One of my best friends from college is a crazy Republican and he is always forwarding me stale, old right wing emails that he thinks are new. He always leaves the prior addressees in the emails, even though I have told him on many occasions that he shouldn’t. He finally sent me something yesterday that was so incorrect and pissed me off so much that I responded to it, including documentation and online references (ie congressional records and other official govt websites) for everything I said. Then I sent it to everyone that it had ever been forwarded to. It took me an hour and fifteen minutes of cutting and pasting to get all the addresses in.

I also removed all references to my friend so as not to get him in trouble with anyone. However, he’s such a prolific forwarder that evidently everyone new who it came from. I just received this blanket email:

“Jay is a college liberal friend of mine who likes to correct and harass me for not verifying that not everything you read on the net is true. Too, proper protocol for forwarding unsupported stuff like this is to at least strip all of the previously left addressing (like those emails from Scott XXXXX). That just makes me leave on all of the addresses and not check any facts since it gets him so worked up!”

Or maybe it was just someone having weird fun.

Back in the early seventies, when I was an undergrad, the young Republicans in that state (Wisconsin) had the annual convention at my university’s campus. This appalled many liberal students, this being an era when young people still demonstrated a lot. . . the sixties barely over.

To protest the young Republicans ‘convention’, which took place in our student union, a bunch of my friends rented bumblebee costumes and buzzed around all the young republicans, just to be pains in the asses and bug the heck out of the young republicans. They refused to speak when spoken so and they did drive the young republicans nuts. There weren’t many young republicans, given that it was, supposedly, the statewide meeting for the year. That was nice, that there weren’t many republicans in attendance.

Now to be serious about Sarah’s latest melt down. I am going out on a big limb here, but this is my guess: While Governor, she could not officially sign the contract or any related documents related to the Simi Valley speech. She promised that it would be taken care of the moment that she left office.

But, something more important came up. There could some serious legal matters on $arah’s legal plate, and the lawyer(s) might have said that these matters were far more important than a jaunt to California. I’ll give an example. When former Gov.Blagojevich (Illinois) wanted to go off to the jungle and eat worms on TV, the court wouldn’t let him go. They admonished him that with thousands of pages of charges to wade through for his coming corruption trial (January 21010?) he had to stay home and start reading.

I’m also going to make a big fat guess based on nothing but gut feeling. My nephew has attention deficit disorder and one of his major flaws is that he cannot finish anything. In school, he couldn’t hand in the final paper; he couldn’t take the final test. He has left job after job. I am guessing that Palin has some kind of psychological problems that make her act in erratic ways. She has canceled speeches and appearances before, and quitting her past job makes no sense. Maybe the medication has lost its effect. Maybe she is bipolar. She has been strangely silent lately, given her recent flurry of twitters. If you had to go by her last few speeches, you might just be the one patting her arm and saying, “Please, Simi Valley isn’t that important, hon, you really need a break from all of this pressure.”

Y’know, when I read, a few weeks back, that Palin was going to talk at the Reagan library,my first thought was that she was an insult to Reagan. I hate Ronald Reagan: he was the figurehead of the neo-con movement that dragged this country into the dirt during George W. Bush years but even Ronald Reagan was a kind of competent in elected office. Palin is an insult to his memory.

I think the suggestion that Nancy Reagan might have resisted having Palin speak at the Reagan library sounds about right.

I had this thought in the middle of the night (I’ve been up all night writing the next great American novel) . . . this is a crazy concept but I want to run it past this great community . . . can anyone imagine Sarah Palin as Governor of Alaska but imagine her having been nice, kind and warm-hearted, thoughtful and generous of spirit, turning the other cheek, carefully honoring even the mere appearance of impropriety? It occured to me if she had just been pleasant and kind, along the lines of what they teach good little girls in kindergarden, even if she was kinda incompetent, disinterested in actually doing the work of governing. . . if she had been nice, she might have actually had a political future.

I reiterate that I despise what Ronald Reagan stood for. The whole country continues to live with the damage he set loose. . . but Reagan was always nice.

Sarah Heath Palin has a mean streak. Her constant reflex when someone disagrees with her is not just to say she disagrees . . . but wants to lash out and hurt. I think if she were naturally kind, instead of compulsively controlling and manipulative, she would have done all right even though she is a bubble brained moron. Nice goes a long way.

If my mom said it once, she said this a thousand times: you get more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. Sarah is too full of vinegar. Ronnie Reagan was sweet.

All is quiet on the Western Front. But like Old Faithful, things must be heating up for the inevitable eruption. I would not want to be a family member stuck with her right now as she watches her house of cards blow away with the wind. The realization is going to hit her sometime that the dream is over, she is going nowhere, people don’t care about her anymore, they just want her gone. And when that happens, it’s going to get ugly(er).

What she doesn’t realize is that to go where she wants to go, she needs some cred. Her erratic actions have worn thin, even on true believers. As far as speaking engagements, she’s like Lucy holding the football for Charlie Brown. You play the same trick over and over with a different excuse every time, and eventually, no one is going to want to play with you. How many speaking engagements has she canceled now? How many organizations have expected her to show up only to be told, not only will Sarah not be showing up, but she never committed in the first place. These organizations obviously thought she was going to show up. And this is how she treats her friends and supporters! And all invites to speak need to be run by her lawyer? What, does she think these are all “Gotcha” invites?

A couple weeks ago, she was busting at the seams to be able to tweet without the constrictions of being Governor. Now silence. Well, after the William Shatner interpretive readings of her farewell speach and twitter tweets, I guess she might be afraid to put anything out there to be made fun of. She has to know that now, anything she throws out there will be examined ,and dissected, and thrown back in her face.

Then the book deal……… who the hell is going to want to read a book by Sarah Palin now? Certainly not enough people to justify a 7 mill advance. People want to read about heros, not quitters. And besides, if the book made any sense at all, it was obviously written by someone else. With Sarah’s propensity for chopping up words and sentences and tossing them about willy nilly it will be a hard read to try to comprehend anything. If Sarah writes it, I can only imagine it reads like one of her twitters. Maybe William Shatner can translate it for us.

Whatever, I believe Sarah is going to fade away from mainstream consciousness (after all the legal matters are cleared up) and someday, she’ll be the answer to a trivia question. Something like…. “What’s the biggest mistake you ever made in your voting life?” Answer……Supporting Sarah Palin.

The red thingy above is the last drop of blood Alaska wrung from Sarah Palin. Or is it the last drop of blood Sarah wrung from Alaska?

I felt bad for Saddam in his last humiliating days!
(He was used by the USA until they didn’t like him anymore. He is a criminal but we installed him and then took him down. )

So, I do feel badly for her.
    I think something is up.
She is suffering as a human being, as we all do, but there is something very wrong. If she were what her supporters think she is, she would behave much differently.

    —————————————

I honestly think she is classic bi-polar combined with a Narcissistic personality disorder. It is a classic blend. She is hyper. Even on that fishing boat outing after her “Joan of Arc I quit speech” she was speeded up and rattled. She looks terrible. She should just take a good rest out in the Alaskan woods. If I were her I would just disappear for six months.

As many have pointed out, she HAD the PERFECT political cover if she would have just said “My special needs kid needs me right now as a Mother so I am resigning – bye!” and then showed up in two years as the Republican Presidential Joan of Arc Super Family Values Mom Candidate Goddess from the Great White North! But she was too amazingly dumb to see how perfect that was if she wanted to stay in it. So now the best gig for her is write the book and get a TV talking head job. But I predict she is so ADD that she just will not be able to do that either. Whatever her life long biochemical demons are, they are still there. If she gets a TV show on Fox, I predict it will be a flash in the pan. She cannot be coherent for more that a month. The nasal voice will be lethal. The Johnny-One-Note yammering psychological need ideology just will not be surgical enough for any real understanding of anything. It will all break down over time as a ratings train wreck. She is a mentally ill person and this has all gone way to far. John McCain was a madman to inflict this sad spectacle of mental illness on the nation. It is as simple as that.

I am sure there is alot of bartering and wheeling and dealing going on behind the scenes. Sarah would try her best to make sure her true self is not blasted all over the media.

plus the scolding she gave all of us in her farewell speech that all criticism would come to a grinding halt? Unless she plans on spilling her guts in her upcoming book I think interest will dwindle fast. A radio show is absurd, her voice makes dogs run howling into the woods. A faux position is probably about the only thing left for her. As insipid and toxic as most of the women are at faux they’ll certainly give her a run for the money in the looks department, she doesn’t like that kind of competition…

I agree with several of the posters here that there is some mental or emotional problem which causes Palin’s erratic, inappropriate and often viscious behavior. I understand why some people might feel sorry for her but I have a hard time mustering up any sympathy.

I have struggled for many years with a close relative who has psychological problems that she refuses to acknowledge. It is always someone else’s fault (sound familiar?) and anyone who questions the abnormal behavior must be crazy themselves. She is also a master of manipulation and has everyone who is not closely related to her absolutely convinced that she is the most stable, sweet, caring person alive (sea of pee, anyone?).

The sympathy you may feel at first eventually gives way to anger that the person repeatedly refuses to admit to, or seek help for, their problem. As a young child it was all I knew, but as as an adult I can look back and recognize that many of the behaviors I accepted as normal were, in fact, symptoms of a serious illness. Palin’s perpetual refusal to accept responsibility for anything, coupled with her refusal to listen to anyone around her does not bode well for the future.

I have reached a point in my life where I accept that it is way too late for the person in my life to change, and so I keep the distance necessary for my own peace of mind. I often feel the implied criticism from some people around me who don’t understand that distance is essential for maintaining my own sanity. I sincerely feel for Palin’s family who must find their own ways of dealing with the constant angst that Sarah does and will continue to bring to their lives.

Since Sarah Palin resigned from her office of Governor, does she still get her insurance and does she get a pension from the State of Alaska?

Since Sarah Palin resigned from her office of Governor, does Meg Stapleton still get paid for being her spokesperson?

I would think that anyone who resigned from their job, that they shouldn’t get all these perks! If I were to resign from a job, I would lose all benefits immediately!
    ————–
I don’t know about the insurance and pension, but Meg hasn’t been paid by the state for a while. She was working for the McCain campaign, and then for SarahPac. So they are the one’s picking up the tab for that, not Alaska.

    Thanks to Answers.com and Wikipedia:

“Goofy is an animated cartoon character from the Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse universe, and is one of Mickey Mouse’s best friends. His original concept name was “Dippy Dawg” in cartoon shorts created during the 1930s; then his name was given as “George Geef” or “G.G. Geef” in cartoon shorts during the 1950s, implying that “Goofy” was a nickname. Contemporary sources, including the Goof Troop television show and A Goofy Movie, now give the character’s full name to be Goofy Goof. The Goof Troop pilot also refers to ‘G. G. Goof’ on a diploma, likely a reference to the 1950s name. On the other hand, the comics sometimes refer to him as Goofus D. Dawg. Along with being not intelligent, Goofy’s main flaw is, predictably, clumsiness. His birthday is May 25, 1932. Goofy is a V.I.P. member of the Mickey Mouse Club.”

Daisy, yes, Barnett has done book deals for half of DC, including Obama, Clinton, etc.

How can Palin afford to retain this guy? Where did the retainer come from? You know he probably charges $1000K+ per hour, so the retainer would have to be very large. Every minute of conversation (rounded up to the next minute), whether on the phone, in person, etc. goes to billing against the retainer, plus any expenses (such as the COST of the phone call, the email, copying, etc.) Billable hours is Everything in these law firms. So, who paid it? Even if he’s working on a percentage of the advance (contingency fee), it had to be a pretty large sum. These guys don’t come cheap. Has Palin actually received her advance on the book yet? Does anyone know?

Funny that Barnett would comment on a broadcast deal…unless she hired him exclusively for any media deals she might be able to scrounge up and not just the book. According to his profile on the law firm’s website:

Mr. Barnett was ranked Number One on Washingtonian magazine’s list of “Washington’s Best Lawyers” and as one of “The 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America” by The National Law Journal. He was also named one of the one hundred most powerful people in the entertainment industry by Entertainment Weekly Magazine.

I think- unless it was negotiated differently- that once Palin resigned as Governor, her insurance ends at the next pay period (when insurance cost would be deducted). Then she has the option of COBRA- same insurance, but Palin pays full cost, and she can do this for 180 days. That is a way to continue health coverage, and not get dropped for pre-existing conditions (Trigg) when she gets new insurance. Of course, the kids may be covered under Todd, so it might not matter-

This is what typically happens, but State government coverage may be different- sometimes it is for people who retire from government jobs, but not through resignation.

There is no contract that can’t be rescinded, esp. when there is no progress from the “author” or something occurs that violates the contract. You can bet savvy publishers have escape clauses as well as being able to demand repayment of any advance when it’s determined that the “author” cannot fulfill her obligations.

The Capital Times sues Doyle over records request

The Capital Times filed suit Thursday against Gov. Jim Doyle, charging the governor’s office took too long to comply with an open records request submitted June 4.

The suit, filed in Dane County Circuit Court, names Doyle and his attorney, Chandra Miller Fienen, claiming they withheld letters written for and against nine finalists for three Dane County judicial openings.

Although the state does not have a set time for complying with requests, the law requires information be made available to the public in a timely manner.

The governor’s office made the records available July 8, the day Doyle announced Amy Smith, Nicholas McNamara and Peter C. Anderson were his appointments to the Dane County Circuit Court.

“The governor’s office clearly delayed release of these records until moments before announcing the appointments in a calculated attempt to prevent a story,” said Paul Fanlund, editor of The Capital Times.

Lee Sensenbrenner, a spokesman for the governor, criticized the lawsuit.

“This lawsuit is over your impatience,” said Sensenbrenner, a former Capital Times reporter and editor. “Not over whether you got to see records. I want to make it clear that the paper saw the records.”

Sorry, but I’m like a dog with a bone on this “book deal” of Palin’s. From CBS13.com dated 5/13/09:

If terms of the book deal aren’t leaked by next spring, at least some of the details will be revealed in Palin’s next financial disclosure forms with the Alaska Public Offices Commission. Income next must be reported on March 15, 2010. However, if she isn’t paid in full by Dec. 31, some income may fall over to the next year’s report.

Palin’s book will address, and complicate, the push-pull between home and public life. With the release date just one year away, the governor will have to work quickly. Barnett said that the governor has formed an outline in her mind, but has yet to start writing. Burnham said Palin did not submit any writing samples when she met with HarperCollins executives in Washington, earlier this year. She will work with a collaborator, to be determined.

So, 2 major questions: #1: Since she’s no longer gov, did she already release a financial disclosure form for this year?

He’s not on retainer. He’s acting as a book agent, but a lawyer, and book agents get a percentage of the deal–usually 15% but in this guy’s case maybe 20%. I think his office also represents public figures going on speaking tours and he probably has a subagent doing the preliminary negotiations with radio and TV, for which again they would take a percentage.

Notice in his recent denial about the Clear Channel story he said that “SHE” had not talked to anyone about doing radio. Of course “she” hasn’t; Sarah wouldn’t be brought in at the preliminary stages. As far as I’m concerned, the wording of the denial confirmed the rumor.

BTW, we now have the answer to the question—Who will Palin blame next? Well, well—even while in hiding she is blaming the organizers of the event in California for “misinterpreting” Palin’s RSVP. Amazing.

By Thursday he was finally diagnosed and got proper medication. Paul prompted him by asking if he was so sick why didn’t he just take the night off. Maybe it was a dig; Letterman’s response was that as long as he could walk, he wouldn’t walk away from the show. (Remember, he jokes about McCain canceling at the last minute to save the economy. Wonder where Sarah got the idea that walking out was a good idea). By the way, Friday’s show is usually taped earlier in the week, so jokes may be a little out of date.

OK, found the article in the Star, and Simi did go to the Rs. HOWEVER:

“Obama’s performance in California and in Ventura County was just an exaggerated version of what he did nationwide.”

Thousand Oaks is a perfect illustration. It represents, Broesamle said, “the archetype, if you will, of upper-middle-class, suburban, Main Street America.”

Thousand Oaks has a median household income that’s almost double the national average, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Three out of four residents are white, and three out of four are homeowners.

In short, he said, it’s a natural Republican constituency, the type of place that could always be counted on to vote for Ronald Reagan or George W. Bush. Registered Republicans outnumber Democrats by 11 percentage points.

And yet, Obama won Thousand Oaks by a fairly comfortable margin: 50.7 percent to McCain’s 46.7 percent.

“If you’re the Republican Party and you don’t win Thousand Oaks, you need to go back to the drawing board,” Broesamle said.

Once you’re there, he said, you need to figure out what the party’s identity really is. Is the GOP a party of preachers like Mike Huckabee, businessmen like Mitt Romney, or military men like John McCain?

Had practice keeping my mouth shut when working in Corp America in NYC, but had a funny incident about keeping a poker face in NY, right before leaving that company.

My boss and I had a meeting in my boss’s conference room with a Harvard MBA guy (whose office I once borrowed to work on something so I could sorta be in two places at once. MBA guy’s father had died a couple of days before, family stuck out of state because they all were sick and couldn’t fly back. His boss was a complete shmuck and very demanding and offered nothing compassionate about the death of his father. So I had some compassion for him, given the jerk boss, whom I’d met and thought was a jerk before moving to NYC. Not that I’m opinionated or anything.)

Now a couple of years after the death, my boss and MBA guy’s boss were equals, but my guy was a NICE demanding boss, and I got along well with him. Harvard MBA guy is leading a project, trying to tell us what he needs from us for an hour. We ask clarifying questions OVER AND OVER AND OVER and still the same jibberish project management buzz words keep falling out of his mouth. Like ADD spew. For an hour.

Finally the meeting is over, he leaves and my boss closes the door again. He says to me, “I don’t like to ever talk about other people, but is he from another planet or am I?”

We had a good laugh about that, but I still had to get the high visibility project thing done, and it was a PITA for me. Kinda didn’t really matter anyway because shortly thereafter, we both left and started a new company. Post 9/11, boss and I traveled probably on 200 flights together and after airport chaos, I just couldn’t stand it any more and wanted to be back home in CA.

On the question of August 4th hearing the docket says oral arguments. My guess is that is all it will be. This is an administrative type matter, not a trial.

There were probably affidavits filed, and there may have been cross-examination on those affidavits, but it was likely done in a lawyer’s office. The transcripts of that, if any, would be provided to the judge. The lawyers will have filed briefs in advance as well.

In fact, if they do it in AK like they do it here, the “oral arguments” will mostly be a quick summation of the briefs, and an opportunity for the judge to ask questions to clarify and test those arguments. In and out, probably in under an hour.

Then the judge will rule, maybe that day, maybe later. They review all the written materials in advance, and unless there is something in oral argument that changes their first impressions, they are often ready with a draft judgement and order that they may issue after a half-hour recess.

She is also a master of manipulation and has everyone who is not closely related to her absolutely convinced that she is the most stable, sweet, caring person alive (sea of pee, anyone?).”

leenie, my understanding is that many psychologists/psychiatrists do not like to treat people with NPD simply because the NPDs cannot acknowledge they have a problem. I have no idea if that is what is wrong with SP; it just seems like it might be. I have thought about the idea that she might be bipolar, but the NPD quite handily explains the highs and lows we have seen, too. We can only speculate. However, if the Dalai Lama were to be interviewed about SP, he would say that we need to look for common ground; among other things, we all wish to be happy. SP wants that, too. I feel very strongly that I do not like her, but I, in all fairness, do not know her personally. What I try to do (sometimes unsuccessfully) is to focus on her policies. They are fair game, and they are (understatement ahead) crappy. And, yes, she is the mistress of manipulation, but many, many folks who aren’t closely related to her are not buying it.

“Hate crime” legislation, removal of conscience protections for health care workers, the Fairness Doctrine, groups like ACORN intimidating voters and committing voter fraud, “Card Check” legislation to create a permanent majority – President Obama and the Democratic Party is doing all it can to suppress free speech that they disagree with and that threatens their plans for a “permanent majority” in power. Very astute observation Polly…and truth be known, Alaska was probably closer than reported on Nov. 4th…but the President cannot do it alone. It’s going to take each one of us, collectively doing what “we” can to bring about much need change and restoration to the nation.

She said they would go around the room of 40 people who would report if their projects were on schedule (green) running into problems (yellow) or behind schedule (red). In the meetings, his project was green green green green at all the meetings, per his reports until the meeting two days before it was to go live, then it was red.
