Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Open Thread – Screen Door Sunday in North Pole

There are still a few photos to share from the Don’t Let the Screen Door Hit You On the Way Out weekend.  Here’s a great picture and write-up from Mudflatter J up in North Pole!

screendoor

I read your blog most days, and was happy to have a screen door party.  I had thought about going to the Governor’s Picnic up here in Fairbanks and bring along some witty signage so that the national press can appreciate that not all Alaskans support Sarah. Then, I thought, that the best way to show my non-support was to actually not attend her function in a negative or a positive manner. Probably the best thing was simply to not show up at all, for I really think that Sarah Palin loves attention in whatever form it comes. So, to host a party and have no one show up would really have bummed her out.

So, I hoisted a spare screen door up on the flagpole and hung an Alaskan flag on it…all under the Earth Flag. Maybe I’ll keep it up for a week or so to see if anyone asks me why i have a screen door hanging from my flagpole. We had a wonderful meal to celebrate her departure that featured Alaska Copper River red salmon with barracuda bbq sauce, Katie Couric grilled zucchini slices, and partially done rasberry custard pie.

Please don’t tease me with talk of Copper River red salmon!! My mouth is watering so much, I’m afraid I’m going to drool all over the keyboard. And the rest of the menu sounds good too. (sigh) That’s what happens when one lives down in the 50th state and doesn’t get up to Fairbanks to visit her son and daughter-in-law.

You throw a great party, Mudflatter J.

This reminds me of something I heard at a local hardware store.

A guy brought in a jelly doughnut to work, took a bite out of one side, no jelly. Bite out of the other side, no jelly. Put it back in the bag, rolled down the top and left it on the break table.

Came back in to eat it, and it was gone. Not in the trash, no sign of it. Guy was pissed and kinda horrified about who did he work with that someone would eat someone else’s half eaten doughnut. He complained to the manager.

He was gonna get the person the next day by doing the same thing, but squirting hot sauce into the jelly.

I thought of that story when I read about the pie.

Good morning all. I’m off to meet Mudpuppies in NYC soon. Have a terrific weekend, and don’t forget to listen to Shannyn tonight… we’re planning to call in from MudstockNYC! Well, whoever’s actually able to dial at that point will call…. It will be 9 PM here… 6 hours in. :)

Someone just sent me something from the red site. Apparently they are writing the Blue Dogs about health insurance – pretending to have voted for them. :)

They must be totally insane if they think the Blue Dogs are going to believe that ranters against decent health care really voted for them. The Blue Dogs – I am SURE – are acutely aware of how the people who really DID vote for them feel about (1) health care, and (2) Blue Dogs. grrrrr

I guess the poor old red people don’t have much else to do with their time these days, now that they can’t pretend that Sarah Palin is their BFF any more. ROFL!

It’s an absolutely gorgeous morning here in Detroit! I can’t remember the last time I didn’t wake up on August 1st to beautiful weather. I’m lucky that way. Hope to get out on a Great Lake with the boat today.

I can’t wait to live blog tonite with the call in from Mudstock! I wonder if AKM can get you guys a “secret number” to ensure you get through? It would be a TRAVESTY if all the lines were busy and your call didn’t get through.

    I loved your “Earth” flag!

I think you are spot on about Quittypants needing attention (love/hate) of either kind. On the other hand, a careful documentation of her actual words and actions is needed to expose her for the fraud she is.

One of the (many) reasons I continue to be a fan of The Mudflats is the humorous touch, along with fact-based observations of our darling AKM. Although some of the comments display exasperation with some personalities and situations, on the whole I find the tone of this blog to be cheerfully zen-like.

Occasionally, I tiptoe over to the haraSmaeT site. Now those are a people driven by raw emotion. Facts (and spellcheck) are completely optional, within their “tent revival” atmosphere. It’s either hellfire and brimstone, or blind adoration with those folks.

WOW on Gryphen’s story! Way to go with the scoopage!

Must say I’m not really shocked since I’ve also noticed a distinct lack of affection between the two of them, and Todd seemed more and more distant as time went on. The kids seem to know how to show affection so they must have picked it up from their father ’cause we know Quittypants is NOT exactly the warm fuzzy type! He seems to be pretty warm with the kids so the chill in the air after the stress of the campaign was over could easily be explained by a crumbling marriage. Also explains a LOT of the more-than-usual odd behavior recently. Two thoughts:

    - Todd is probably doing the happy dance that McCain lost because he would have been stuck in a miserable marriage IN WASHINGTON DC for the next 4 years, pretending that everything is peachy. Gotta be a convincing liar to to pull that off in the constant glare of media, and we all know that she’s the expert in that particular arena. Don’t think he’s quite as skilled at the whole lying-through-your-teeth thing.

    - Sarah must be having a cow, worrying about the dirt that could be revealed during a divorce. If family history is any indication, splits in the Heath family are UGLY!

Todd and Sarah Palin to divorce

AlaskaReport has learned this morning that Todd Palin and former Alaska governor Sarah Palin are to divorce. Multiple sources in Wasilla and Anchorage have confirmed the news.

A National Enquirer story exposing previous affairs on both sides led to a deterioration of their marriage and the stress from that led to Palin’s resignation as governor of Alaska.

That BP job on the slope of Toads is in name only.. A little perk handed out from big oil to the Gubnas hubby, I doubt he’s ever been north of Fairbanks say much less the slope.. Other than supposedly building free houses and boats, a brief stint owning a Polaris shop and a car wash (both went bankrupt despite $arah changing the zoning laws for snowmachine trails as Mayor to run right by the shop), fishing and wrecking snow machines, I don’t think Toad has ever held a real job

pretty obvious who the palinbots are going to start blaming for this one.

the “media” ruined the palins’ marriage. everything would have been fine-and-dandy had the media left them alone. and sarah will get another pass again… once again, sarah is the victim.

From day one when Palin hit the “scene”, I have said that she and Todd look like they can’t stand each other. I have never seen any affection between the two of them. I rarely have seen them even interacting with each other. He is always standing to the side with his hands crossed in front of him. Body language speaks louder than words.

I think their marriage issues go back further past the campaign last year. He didn’t look happy from the beginning.

Also, I ever seen any affection from Palin toward her children. For someone who claims to be such a “mamma bear” protecting her children, I have never seen her hug Piper or hold her hand, kiss her, nothing…..nada.

That little Piper is so cute, I just want to give her a big hug myself.

If this is true, I do feel bad for the kids. But, their mother is a mess. It would also explain why the two older girls have not been standing by their mother’s side. They probably know what’s going on and Palin couldn’t trust them to put on a happy face for the camera. Piper is probably too young to understand what’s going on.

This explains Sarah’s resignation and her insistence that it was better for the State of Alaska. She didn’t want to drag the State through a messy divorce or didn’t feel she could emotionally handle a divorce and governing at the same time. Also explains the Reagan Library cancellation.

But the suddenness of it begs one to ponder why so sudden? Did the weight of her world and aspirations falling apart around her just cause her to snap? Or did she catch Todd In flagrante delicto? The suddenness and the catching everyone around her off guard leaves one to think some event happened that she couldn’t ignore or explain away.

Whatever, I’m glad she is no longer Governor of Alaska. If she committed crimes or abuses of power while in office, I hope she pays for them. (If she was pushing prosecutors to throw the book at Sherry Johnson, that is serious abuse, even more so than her abuse in the Wooten case.) That is a public matter.

If Sarah and Todd are divorcing tho, that’s all I need to know. I don’t need the reasons or details, and don’t think they need to be made public unless they concern public business. The kids have been through enough, they don’t need to have their parents’ personal shortcomings dragged through the public swamp. Let them have something to hold onto. Although I loathe Buttercup, I can’t help but feel sorry for her. I went through a divorce that started as a seperation years ago and it is so painful, especially for the children. The hardest part is going public with the news of the split.

I’m not that surprised to hear there might be a Palin divorce. It has seemed strange that Sarah hasn’t been wearing a wedding ring and the body language between Todd and her has seemed uncomfortable. One of the first things I noticed while watching the Fairbanks coverage was the lack of affection between the two. They weren’t even holding hands as she waited to go up and speak.

I am looking forward to learning more about this story but I hope we all keep the Palin family in our prayers…especially the children. And I hope that Todd and Sarah can live their seperate lives at a resonable distance from each other so the kids can have both parents near them…divorced or not, kids need both mom and dad in their lives if not on a daily basis, at least on a weekly visitation schedule.

I feel sooo bad for the Palin kids, especially Trigg and Piper, since they’ve had a crappy year, being dragged around the country, paraded all over and told to put on a happy face when it was the last thing they wanted to do. I suspect that the disintegration of the marriage started long before the campaign so the ensuing tension must have put additional pressure on the whole family. As much as we all want to see Sarah taken out of the spotlight for good, I hate to think about the vitriol that is about to be spewed on all sides. What a mess!

Remember long ago there was a story about there was a divorce in the works when she was tapped as McCain’s. Once he tapped her, the process was stopped and papers sealed. I agree…there never is any affection between them. Just imagine the stress all these months if that is true.

I keep thinking of Mercede’s caption on her photo of her and Trig. Something like , “My baby brother, Triggy Bear.” I have to think the true parentage of Trig is about to be revealed. Remember too, how tiny he was….much smaller than the photo of Trig and the Heath’s where he was big, and chubby taken on April 18. I am sure Trig’s birthdate is not April 18, but much earlier.

This must be the reason Palin will not show Trig’s birth certificate….the date will not match.

Plus, if she had an affair, it speaks to her “Christian” family values and it makes it a bit hard for her to sell the victim story—–again.

If Sarah and Todd were looking to divorce before she was picked for VP by McCain, then she can’t play the victim and blame everyone else for her own life circumstances. Also too, the birth of Trig may have something to do with the talk of divorce before McCain picked Palin.

No matter how civil the parents are and how involved they remain in their children’s lives, it always leaves scars. And given the public eye in which the Palins live, it has got to be 100x worse. As much as I dislike SP, I hope the media does exercise some restraint in dealing with their coverage of the Palins, if the divorce rumors turn out to be true.

I don’t know what the laws are in AK, but I know after I got divorced, I wanted to move to CO but could not because ex would not give permission for me to move the kids that far away. Hated him for it at the time, but turned out to be the best thing for our children.

If SP has been putting pressure on the DA to throw the book at Sherry Johnston, then she and the DA should be exposed and held accountable for their actions. The judge, also, if involved in undue pressure should be punished. A good judge should be able to put a stop to any interference by SP.

I guess Levi is lucky Todd didn’t shot him. This is outrageous for Todd to have pulled a gun on Levi. Todd is also lucky that Levi didn’t press charges against him. Wouldn’t this be considered assault with a deadly weapon?

I agree with twodux, a divorce is a sad and painful thing, and for the whole family, not just the two who are splitting. I hope there is not a media circus around any purely personal details. The truth needs to come out on anything that relates to her role as a public official, the rest is no one else’s business. I don’t have to like her (and I don’t) to want to give the family this respect.
    ______________________
I agree with you…..to a point. The fact is, Palin is a public figure (by her own choosing) and she has aligned herself with the Christian Right–Family Values set. If the details expose Palin as a liar, then I believe the public has a right to know.

Palin will blame the media and bloggers for her personal life and gain sympathy from her followers. If there is any truth to the rumors of Sarah having an affair, the details surrounding the birth of Trig, or if the Palin’s were planning to divorce before McCain picked Palin—then these details
should become public because they expose Palin as a liar.

Think about it. She’s been hating on bloggers, blaming them for all her troubles, and she’s a very vindictive person.

She was also looking for a way out of being Governor and moving to the big time. She hatches a plan to quit and get her revenge at the same time. First, she gives her farewell speech emphasizing the media making things up. Then plants a false story about her impending divorce. Somebody bites and reports it as fact. No divorce happens and reportee is left red faced and is sued for slander. This generates sympathetic feeling towards someone who is losing her star power fast. And gives her a perfect chance to say….. “See what I have been putting up with?” “This is why I resigned for the good of Alaska.” She gets to quit, move on up, and her charges against the press and bloggers are vindicated. And if she passed the rumor on to a limited number of people, she may even be able to pinpoint who has been passing info onto the enemy.

This is all conjecture, but within the realm of possibility in this Bizzaro world. I’m sure if this scenario is somewhat true, they were hoping to catch a few MSM in their snare also.

She really needs a stable, secure environnment—something she will never get with SP. And Trig, of course, has never received the help that is available for special needs children. I keep these two children, as well as the others, in my prayers.

Would Sarah veto the divorce plans and go back to Todd just to make the bloggers and media look like they are “makin’ stuff up”?

Who is going to be drooling over a single Todd? (Greta? Meg? When is the next divorce?)

A single Sarah is bankable. That could be part of her plan, also, too. She’s got her PAC and Fund money. She’s got her book deal money. (Todd can have the house, but I can see her making him pay her for her half or buying it outright.) I wouldn’t be surprised if every single thing, including the car were in her name. And now she’s shopping herself around for a job.

Willow and Piper will go with Sarah but they’ll be gone soon. Will Trig be staying in Alaska to live with Bristol? He’ll just be a millstone to her new plans. Hmm. Willow will take care of Trig for two years, then Piper will take over. Trig won’t be so cute on the 2016 campaign trail so at some point, he’ll be going back to Alaska. Maybe if Bristol *is* his Mom, that will work out very well for Sarah.

Montana? I don’t think so. Not for long. That’s a stepping stone. Does she have her eye on a congressional district in Montana that would be easy for her to win? She’d have to be a resident for a year? Because I don’t see her launching her radio (or TV) career from there. So it’s either there’s a vulnerable office easy for her to win, or it’s a geographic stepping stone. Moving on to Texas a little later maybe?

Now…if she is running for a Montana congressional seat….that puts her in Congress for a run at the White House at a later date. Maybe 2016? Is that the plan? Serve 4-6 years in congress and then run? Unless. If she moves soon she’ll just barely be a resident for a year for the Montana 2010 elections. That puts her in line for 2012. Does she really think she has a chance against Obama in 2012? Well, I’m sure *she* does. Nope. I think she’s lining herself up for 2016. If she can keep her figure, a little plastic surgery, she’ll still look fine in 7 years. 52. That’s not too old.

ALASKA STRENGTHENS COMMUNITY PROPERTY AGREEMENTS AND TRUSTS BY CLARIFYING RIGHT TO AMEND AND REVOKE
In 1998, Alaska became the 10th community property state. In contrast to the other states, Alaska adopted an optional community property system. The default property system remains separate property. However, a couple may opt-in to a community property system. The act provides that non-residents of Alaska may use Alaska’s community property system by adopting an Alaska community property trust. The goal of the Act is to make available to both residents and non-residents of Alaska the community property benefits of sharing and equality, and a full stepped-up basis at the death of the first spouse.

The recent amendments clarify ambiguities relating to amendment and revocation of community property agreements and trusts. The following background is necessary to understand these amendments. The Alaska Community Property Act is based upon the Uniform Marital Property Act. One new feature added by UMPA is the ability of a couple to make a non-testamentary disposition under a community property agreement. Alaska enacted the same provision which is applicable both to community property agreements and community property trusts. Further, the Alaska Act provides that such instruments may not be amended or revoked unless the agreement or trust itself provides for revocation “on a particular date or on the occurrence of a particular event …”

Gryphen on says that she MIGHT be thinking of moving to Montana. Not that she definitely is.

Another thought is that if she was going to divorce Todd, she might not now. In fact, people separate and don’t always divorce or even file for legal separation. An agreement can be drawn up between the two parties and never publicized. (it could be notarized, but I’m not sure that is required)
The only way anyone would know for sure is if Todd filed for divorce or if S or T talked about it to the press.

Besides, as someone pointed out, there was no denial of Palin involvement in the Johnston arrest, nor denial of Todd pointing a gun at Levi. It makes me wonder why the interview with Levi, though, won’t come out until Oct.? Is the magazine just trying to cover its ass? Or are they just waiting for the axe to fall?

And what wife leaves her husband stranded, as she did at the picnic? Why was Joe Schmidt standing in the place where Toad should have been? Why didn’t she stick around to gladhand her admirers? Ah, the questions, the questions.
