People with John’s beliefs on the health care system forget something very important. Insurance companies don’t work for free. In fact they work for a profit. About a 1/4 to 1/2 of the premium goes to the insurance companies. That’s how their sales people, customer service, medical staff and all others they hire, are paid.

Eliminate the insurance companies and this cost is eliminated. No sales people are needed to sell government insurance.

It is immoral to make money off of people’s poor health. Health insurance should be non-profit. It most definitely should NOT be tied to employment. Everyone, regardless of previous conditions or need for costly life-saving treatment, should have health care. Republicans try to scare us by saying, “You want what Canada has?” I say, “YES!!!” I want what Canada, Sweden, Great Britain, and Norway have–health care for every citizen. My brother-in-law and his wife just emigrated to Canada for the health care there. I wonder how many other USA citizens have done so.

I am a licensed insurance agent, I sell private policies that compliment medicare. Every major ins co jumped into that market because there is a profit! If there hadn’t been, they would not have done it. These private policies are guarantee issue, no exclusion for pre-existing conditions (if you think 65+ year olds don’t have pre-existing conditions, you need to wake up) with a wide range of premiums. Some have co-pays, some don’t, some require networks, others don’t.

Clearly, the private industry can operate with the government backed policies.

The uninsured are being cared for in ERs and those costs are passed on to those with insurance. ERs are the most expensive form of care because people are much sicker when they go. Rather than wait, they could get cheaper preventative care.

One last item, the Iraq war could have funded our health care reformation many times over, rather than killing 100s of 1000s.

Sue–I agree with you about the Canada health care. We live there part time (NB) and I can also say they (Canadians) are getting sick and tired of hearing their health care system being trashed by certain politicos here in good ol’ US. The most popular hero in a recent poll of theirs is the guy who introduced their health system. I am sorry I don’t have his name or it would be mentioned. We live outside of a small town when in Can. and the local, up to date hospital is tops, plus there is Medivac service for risk patients that take occasional high-risk patients to the larger hosp. in Moncton. Lots of services for the elderly and child care. School support for special needs children is wonderful. I have autistic grandkids and we checked. As a side note-I have a dog with a bad genetic disease, guess what, the vet service is more up to date on his condition than here in a large city in Ma. Really great medical all around. ((( ;-) )))

Agreed. Other countries can do it. We can too. We need the political will in Washington.

Changing the whole country at the same time might be biting off more than we can chew. Maybe we should change the health care system several states at a time. It’s a good way to get kinks worked out and give the insurance companies time to phase out.

People shouldn’t suffer without proper health care and spend their personal assets on health costs so insurance companies and stock holders can pile up profits.

I respectfully disagree with Levi making comments on his mother’s court case or any alleged prosecutor tampering. Why would Levi have any knowledge of Palin influencing his mother’s prosecutor? He might have heard something but the doesn’t establish proof. This matter should be investigated quickly because if it’s true, there are grounds for an appeal if not a dismissal.

I agree with Levi discussing Todd pulling a gun on him if that happened. Someone pulling a gun on somebody else happens more often than people realize. Nothing may come this. If Levi’s life was in danger he wouldn’t have been on the same stage with the Palins during the Republican convention and lived in their house before Trip’s birth last year.

faithfulpup, I’m guessing the small town in Canada is the key to your good fortune in medical care. My sister lives in North Vancouver and the medical sucks as do some (not all) of the hospitals(unclean and in need of upgrading everything). Basically, Canadian health care is a huge HMO. It seems that the more dense the population, the more poor the quality of medical care. It took a friend two years in the que to get the torn cartilage in his knee fixed. He lives on Vancouver Island. Another friend’s husband in White Rock had liver cancer. His estimated time in que for chemo was three months. Another one on the island (elderly) waited almost a year for an MRI and several months more for an operation for spinal stenosis which was crippling her. Knowing my sister’s problems and those of her friends in BC makes me want anything but what Canada has. I have heard that it is better in other provinces.

We also have two half brothers in Germany; one is a nurse and the other is married to a nurse. They aren’t too thrilled with their medical system either. So be careful what you wish for. First we need to throw the lobbyists off a cliff. Second, we need a not-for-profit government run system like the Veteren’s Admin. running a competing program against the for-profit insurance company. Third, we need the government to take over the pharmaceuticals or provide not-for-profit competition. The Canadians are running their pharmaceuticals exactly right. That would be worth emulating. I have heard that France has the best type of medical care. That would be worth looking into.

I live in Toronto. My father had liver cancer – cheemo in two weeks. I’ve had 2 wrist surgeries on same wrist 2 years apart. Both non-life threatening. Both done within a month. Hospitals clean.

If you are referring to HMO’s in a way that our Family Dr. is the one who refers us to the specialist we need — yes the Dr. does. As to negotiating costs like HMO’s — no.

Each Province has their own healthcare. In Alberta, there is a two tier system where there is the government program and the private insurance tier. It is doctors from the private sector that are the majority that are appearing in the negative ads now playing in the US that are running down the healthcare system in Canada. Of course — they are the same as your insurance — they are in it for profit. Ontario has tried to bring in a two tier and to date the citizens have won — this is one where even I play on the NIMBY playground, which is totally rare!!

So what you relate is in the BC system, not everywhere. I’ve never read up on the BC program.

You can search for the Department of Health for a Province whether Ontario, BC, Alberta, to read up. I understand from some people in Quebec, they don’t like their’s but I’m not familiar with it. But like everyone else in the world — everybody has to yap about not likeing something!!
