The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Open Thread – Thanks to All Who Made This a Reality.

These are two images that were sent to me of ex-Governor Palin’s abdication in Fairbanks.  The last line in New Acting Governor Sean Parnell’s note, followed by the picture below made me laugh.

    Oh, how funny! That sign says it all!

    Has anyone had a chance to see the list of PO closings? It doesn’t make too much sense to me, and I’d like to get someone else’s opinion. There are only 3 in GA all in the Atlanta area, including CNN and Hartsfield Airport. but FL looks like 30-40. AK doesn’t fare too badly, but was surprised that the military bases were taking a hit on their POs. I wouldn’t mind not having the PO open on Saturday or even closed on a Wed. Anyone else?

    I would mind not having a PO open on Saturday. Most POs in my county are only open from 9 to 3, except one that’s open 8 to 4, weekdays. So everyone with a typical day job needs the Saturday openings. Even then, the hours are very short. My neighborhood PO is only open from 9 to 11 on Saturday. (sigh) I better go check the list….

    @austintx
    Do you know anyone who was at this meeting or their take on this?

    I’ve read about a few of these disruptions, and it seems to me that, rather than having the desired effect of shutting down the discussion, it is only reaffirming the resolve of people and our congresscritters to work harder for this reform – the very opposite of what the disrupters hope to accomplish.

    U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, fresh off a rousing neighborhood meeting on health-care reform that ended with people chanting “just say no,” said this morning he’s more resolved than ever to seek congressional approval of health-care reforms.

    The Austin Democrat said people who attended the gathering Saturday morning at a South Austin grocery store first heard him talk about why he favors change and then he took questions. Doggett said he subsequently said he wanted to talk one on one with crowd members interested in other issues, but that proved impossible because of deafening chants of “just say no.”

    The Palinbots’ capacity to reach for hyperbole in worship of Mrs. Qiviter never fails to amaze me. Evidently a couple of months ago someone wrote in Salon a glowing comparison of Pres. Obama to Mr. Spock. A Palinbot noticed this.

    Despite slamming the earlier article saying, “We were treated to some really lame comparisons between Obama and Mr. Spock a few months back…” the Palinbot, in a commentary worthy of Sarah Palin plagiarizing Newt Gingrich, hypocritically pens his own LAME COMPARISON, this time comparing Sarah Palin to Mr. Spock’s CAPTAIN, James Kirk!

    http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/lscott/2009/08/04/live-long-and-prosper-sarah-palin/

    Palinbots are still laboring under the delusion that it’s logical to compare Sarah Palin the failed Vice-Presidential candidate once again to Barack Obama the successful Presidential candidate-now President.

    Read the paragraph that this Palinbot, Leigh Scott, wrote to summarize Palin’s introduction to national politics and thereafter:

    Since Sarah Palin burst onto the national scene she has been savaged. The media, the Left, the Right, the Middle, you name it. People either love her or hate her. In the media it seems people love to hate her. The “elites” on both sides of the aisle hate the populism she represents. Traditional feminists hate the fact that she has both a family and a career; something that their paradigm teaches is impossible. Her future rivals hate her because she isn’t a typical politician. Her authenticity makes Mike Huckabee look about as real as the Guinea Pigs in “G-Force”.
    Palin was faced with her own Kobayashi Maru. How could she effectively govern the state of Alaska while facing ridiculous ethics charges and the scrutiny of the national media?
    [why is it the obvious answer -- DON'T DO ANY THING UNETHICAL -- never occurs to these Palinbots?] How could she increase her exposure in the lower 48 while staying true to the people in Alaska who elected her? Perhaps if the wingnuts in Alaska didn’t stalk her with silly lawsuits she would have simply put her larger ambitions on the back burner and continued to do her job as governor. But it wasn’t meant to be. She was perfectly set up to fail. Her popularity in Alaska would decline. The national media would point to it as an indicator of her overall effectiveness. The Klingons…I mean the left, would have won.”

    This kind of middle school one-upmanship, fact-bending, outright untruths and delusion was greeted at our favorite Palinbot lurking site with great enthusiasm, of course.

    They love their Oscar Meyer baloney.

    We know what you’re after
    We’re wise to you this time

    Lunatic fringe
    In the twilight’s last gleaming
    This is open season
    But you won’t get too far
    We know you’ve got to blame someone
    For your own confusion
    But we’re on guard this time
    Against your final solution

    We can hear you coming
    (We can hear you coming)
    No you’re not going to win this time
    We can hear the footsteps
    (We can hear the footsteps)
    Way out along the walkway
    Lunatic fringe
    We know you’re out there
    But in these new dark ages
    There will still be light

    An eye for an eye;

    Your bulls*** about “my best source” had some serious unintended consequences, Griffin. Among other things, you ruined my weekend. Frankly, I didn’t give a damn about what was going on in Wasilla. I was planning to spend the weekend chilling out so I could spend this week up on Capitol Hill talking to my sources on the IG investigations. Byron York beat me last week, which was my own fault, and now I’ve got to play catch-up.
    Instead, I ended up spending all Saturday knocking down the bogus story from you and Zaki — the Woodward and Bernstein of Anchorage — which left me entirely frazzled. And then I got a call Sunday morning from Dan Riehl, and my weekend descended into the seventh circle of Hell.

    Its the comments to his work. The sheer violence and ignorance is astounding…yet they say that Gryphen was never threatened with violence this past weekend.

    Liars. I have seen the words myself, and wondered…how can this be? Is this not a felony? I mean….if you threatened someone with death over the phone or in person…if you told them perhaps some of you and your buddies would come after you with their guns….if a lawyer sends you a letter sounding straight out of Soprano’s episode…it should be against the law. It would be so where I live, and I believe it is in the States too.

    I hope Grypen has the IP numbers of all those nasty people who threatened him. I believe it most likely they are cowards, but cowards are brave in numbers. Meet people like McCain face to face…one to one…he would run like a scared little rabbit.

    While I know that the NRA (almost religion here in AK) has threatened to pull their support of any senator who will vote for Sotomayor and Begich would be damaged politically in Alaska, I think he should take a principled stand and vote to confirm Sotomayor anyways. I truly believe Begich personally wants to confirm Sotomayor, but right now he is more scared of the backlash from the NRA.

    If he changes his mind and votes for Sotomayor, I think it would show that he has the backbone to stand up for what clearly the majority of Americans want and that he won’t be so easily swayed by the political threats of this lock step organization. ds55…

    good question.

    Here is an example of what he writes in this email:

    And believe me when I say that this is only a small portion of what this guy writes.

    There’s something very ironic about Palin quitting mid term that I hadn’t thought of before I saw Parnell’s note today “giving thanks to the many who made today reality”..

    Wally Hickel (the well liked ex Governor of Alaska) who was the force behind getting $arah elected, is now one of her most outspoken opponents up here and he always tells it like it is. Gov Hickel so strongly believed in building an all Alaska gasline (NOT thru Canada) that he was gearing up to run for office one more time in the ’06 election. He really didn’t want the job again but knew that a gasline thru Alaska would be the right thing for the state and he believed he could push that agenda thru rather swiftly.

    So he approached $arah about running with him for Lt. Governor and told her that he would make her a deal. He said that if she went along, he would step down after two years (after ostensibly having secured the gasline) blaming his age as the reason and hand the reigns over to $arah.

    Apparently QuitterPants went out and did a little polling or talked to God, the oil companies, who knows.. Anyway, she called him back saying she didn’t need to be on his ticket, she thought she could win the office all by herself. She did however secure his support (he was her campaign chair) and his stronghold of votes by running all over the state saying she would build an all Alaska gasline

    Hickel now despises her and has completely washed his hands of $arah after she decided to send our natural gas to Canada instead of thru Alaska (another EPIC fail in which the only thing that has been accomplished is hand over a half billion dollars of Alaskas money to Canada and get us back in bed with Exxon). His most recent public comment of her in Vanity Fair was “I don’t give a damn what she does anymore, we haven’t spoken since she was elected”

    It’s just kinda eerie that she has now quit mid term and handed off (whooops.. I mean passed the ball) to Parnell. Considering her ties to the AIP and worse up here, it makes me wonder if there is more to whatever her maniacal master plan was for this state

Of course, they forgot to mention a woman could only achieve that goal if she had lots and lots of support from the workplace and her spouse and family and community. I don’t count Sarah Palin a success on either her career or family. She is an abysmal failure on both counts.

    I agree.. My point however is, this is not the first time holding an office for a partial term and then stepping down to further an agenda has been bandied about in her mind. It was put there years ago by Hickel as a way to get things done somewhat underhandedly.. As more is learned and revealed about the depth and scope of the Political Dominionist christian movement, I think we need to add another truism to our collective wisdom. We all know to “follow the money”, but we need to learn to also “follow the religious ties.” In any situation that involves Sarah Palin, until the religious ties are examined and understood, there is always more than meets the eye. Parnell didn’t become a teammate worthy of having the ball passed to him w/out also being more than a fellow Republican.

    “Parnell’s [first full] day [as governor] began with a breakfast session with about 60 pastors and staff initiated by the ministers.”

    The only settlement acceptable is an executive order from the governor’s office prohibiting the use of private email accounts for conducting official business. Thus far, Palin has refused and Parnell also went on the record in an Anchorage Daily News article last week refusing to issue an executive order at the same time he admitted to occasionally using his private email acounts for official business.

    Sarah Palin may have made $1,000,000 to give speech at NRA event in Alaska
    August 4

    i”It looks like Sarah Palin is cashing in her chips early as she was hired to give a speech at a closed to the media event for the NRA(National Rifle Association).Political insiders speculate that the Alaska Governor could have been compensated with up to 1 million dollars for the speech.

    Sarah Palin made her first public appearance since resigning as Alaska governor at a National Rifle Association (NRA) event Saturday night in Anchorage. Palin gave a fire and brimstone speech on the Second Amendment right to bear arms, according to the group.
    According to the NRA, Palin’s speech to 120 people was the crescendo of a five-day Gun Collectors Exposition.

    Top NRA officials attended Palin’s speech, including association President Ronald Schmeits, Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre, and Gun Collectors Committee Chairman Wayne Anthony Ross.

    Also, Palin was given several honors, including the NRA’s Gold Medal Award of Merit for the Promotion of Gun Collecting. This is only the second time in 10 years the award has been presented on behalf of the NRA’s Gun Collectors Committee.”

    In the world of media, Palin does need some work done. This isn’t my personal opinion, but I’m just sharing the standards for looks that are taken into account in the media.

    Compare her face to Fox News Anchors, or Crazy Paula Abdul. Notice how there aren’t any shadows or creases? Some of that is courtesy of good lighting, but mid face lifts are common in Hollywood/TV world, starting in mid-thirties. Palin is behind in this regard.

    I’ve often wondered if she had cheek implants because her face shape changed so much over the years. Fillers and Botox, you betcha.

    Her cheek pads are sagging and she has a double chin from many angles. She’s going to need to fix that if she’s going to base her career on her looks. She certainly doesn’t have the courage, integrity, or inner beauty to age gracefully and beautifully like Helen Mirren or Diane Lane.

    Again, I don’t condone these patriarchal attitudes about beauty– just passing on the standards in an industry I’m very familiar with.

    Item #1 (Campell a LIAR for Palin) from Crooks & Liars:
    This scandal is as easy to follow as it is transparently outrageous. Since choosing her as VP, the McCain campaign has been trying it’s hardest to make the case that as “Commander in Chief” of the Alaskan National Guard, Sarah Palin has relevant national security experience. On August 31, the actual commander of the Alaska National Guard– Major General Craig Campbell — punctured a hole in that meme when the AP reported Campbell saying:

    “[Palin plays] no role in national defense activities, even when they involve the Alaska National Guard.”

    On September 3, Campbell went even further, saying:

    “The Alaskan governor is not in the site’s chain of command and has no authority over its operations.”

    Realizing that Campbell was severely undercutting one of the campaign’s main talking points, it appears someone leaned on him and got him to change his tune…on FOX News:

    “In the last few days, I’ve been watching the press, and I’ve not been very pleased with what I’ve been seeing about the chastising of the National Guard by having it diminished by the insinuation that a commander-in-chief of the National Guard doesn’t really control the military. The National Guard has 500,000 people in it around this great country, serving in states and overseas. National Guards are state military forces run by governors, and Sarah Palin does it great.”

    Now, for being a good soldier, Campbell has gotten a major promotion.

    3. “Private Idaho” not yet on short list for Wasillabilly relocation.
    2. “Tin roof…rusted” has nothing to do with flooding at Eagle.

I would walk pretty much anywhere in the ‘burgh before venturing out in similar surroundings in LA. Do spend some time in Strip District and at Station Square..and ride the Incline.

    Did you hear Dan R’s pod cast? I’ve heard there is a pod cast, but it doesn’t work. Instead people talk about it. It sounds like they are establishing who Gryphen “really is.”
    They will know, but no one else will hear it? If it is slander how can G defend himself? Murdoch can smear him with the people who believe whatever this pod cast has stated.

    It’s a wonder they haven’t floated away with the over inflated ego’s them have of themselves! That McCain idiot is surely got some serious issues. He’s hell bent on making sure that Gryphen is not just outed but ruined, but then he posts how he’s irritated because he claims that the Democrats are trying to censor the Republicans!

    All this based on the statements of Palins mouthpiece and her legal lapdog that they are not splitting up, and let’s face it we all know what a paragon of truth and honesty Palin and her lackeys are…/sarc.

    In one lingering issue, the Alaska Public Offices Commission has refused Palin’s request to keep secret the discounts that come from her husband’s Arctic Cat sponsorship. APOC also said Palin needs to disclose all the gifts she received last year, rejecting her interpretation that she doesn’t need to until after she gets around to actually opening the gifts.

    McLeod, who has had multiple ethics complaints against Palin dismissed, is the same person who brought the Arctic Cat sponsorship issue to APOC, the state’s quasi-independent watchdog agency.

    Also too, Anchorage Superior Court Judge Jack Smith will be ruling on the use of non-state email accts being used for state business, but will take a few weeks to rule.

    @176 PhotonFlower – Thanks for the link. I commented because it seemed that a bit to much negative energy was aimed at the 17 year old who wrote an open letter to your ex-governor:

    Thank you Huffington Post for publishing young William Nellington’s letter. I am encouraged that all is not lost and that a 17 year old would bother to speak truth to power. William’s parents, teachers, and family should be quite proud of his writing skills and his ability to cogently share his views with others.

    It seems unfortunate that supporters of differing viewpoints feel it necessary to rudely suggest that William somehow does not have a right to his own opinion about a very serious threat to our republic democracy. Our right to free speech includes the right to disagree with what others say as long as it does not cause irreparable harm to others. It is important to also understand that our military is not engaged in war to ‘protect our right to free speech’ as we have heard repeatedly and by the highly NRA decorated Ms. Palin.

    It would be very interesting to read the writings of the 17 year old Sarah Palin AND to see photos of her, while governing, on Little Diomede, Alaska where US citizens live. The photo would of course show Big Diomede, Russia in the background. That in itself would have taken the sting out of the SNL Tina Fey joke ‘I can see Russia from my house.’

    William, keep up the good work by continuing to read widely and by writing well. Be encouraged, bless you.

    I bet they were expecting a heck of a lot more people for their million. Well, we know that 120 people walked out of there saying, “What the hell did she say?” Well, maybe Wayne Ross understood her – birds of a feather – hunt together, I guess.

    May I make some suggestions re people’s expectations should Sarah Palin ever sue based on the allegations the baby is not hers?

    1) make sure you have your own facts in order; it is as likely that a judge will make YOU present evidence to back up your contention of a non-birth event;

    2) unless you understand what goes on in a lawsuit, do not expect that just because you say that she needs to do this or that, or that it will go a certain way, that that is what will absolutely happen;

    3) never stand near a rabid dog and dare it to bite you. do that often enough and you will get bit;

    4) before you dare anyone to sue you, make sure you either have insurance that provides adequate coverage (including legal defense) or that you are judgment proof;

    5) unless your lawyer is better than her lawyer, you are going to lose;

    6) anonymous sources provide absolutely no protection to the types of claims being made against Palin;

    7) not only may you be able to depose her, she will also be able to depose you; should that happen and you provide no evidence to support your non-birth contention, her attorney could win the case by simply filing a motion for summary judgment; and

    8) discretion is the better part of valor. or – do your thinking with your brains instead of your hormones, emotions and mouth.
