Legislature Says “Take That!” to Palin on Stimulus Money

The Alaska Legislature just voted to confirm Craig Campbell as the new Lt. Governor for the state of Alaska with 55 voting to confirm and 4 opposed to his confirmation.  The no votes were Senators Kookesh and Paskvan, and Reps. Crawford and Thomas.

And in a decisive smack-down the Legislature voted to accept the stimulus funds that ex-governor Palin rejected because of imaginary strings, or ropes, or whatever she called them.  Apparently it was enough rope to hang her, even after she skipped town and abdicated her position 17 months before the end of her first term as governor.  Senator Johnny Ellis made the move to override the veto, and his colleagues agreed with him.  The vote was 45-14 in favor of taking the funds.

After a brief recess, the legislature reconvened.  An attempt was made to seek to override other Palin vetoes.  At issue were principal capital appropriations vetoed by the former governor.  These projects totalled a little more than $11 million.

Rep. Beth Kerttula (D) advocated for projects for southeast Alaska.  Mike Hawker (R) advocated for the Alaska Court System.  The legislature voted to consider all the projects together in a yea or nay vote - all or nothing.

House voted 23 yea – 15 nay 1 excused

Senate 16 yea -4 nay

40-19… not enough to override.

Ex-governor’s veto is sustained.

Adjourned.

Somebody please list who voted against the override. I’m anxious to know if my Senator and Rep. are idiots or not.

I spent the morning e-mailing them on the override, as well as Begich, Young, and Murkowski on Health Care Reform.

Would have gone downtown, but between the Tea Party Hecklers and the Palinbots, didn’t think it was a good place for my kids. Hope the e-mails do some good instead.

Just want to add my two cents from a local coffee house before one of my other hats back on. Lots of hat changing today. It was a very interesting session and those who spoke in favor of accepting the funds were clear, informed and informative. It was a great opportunity to see our legislature in action and I am so glad to have had the chance to be there.

The scene outside earlier was intense. At one point a small group of people gathered directly in front of the Egan Center with their pro stim funds signs. Across the street the much larger anti stim funds group was gathered. When they saw the handful of folks in support of the funding, a large group of loud teabagger folks rushed across the street surrounding the smaller group. As far as I could tell no one was in any danger, but it was extremely intimidating. They came across in a large group, in other words – they didn’t use the cross walk – just rather charged across and proceeded to chant and carry on loudly. Since when did this become anybody’s preferred form of free speech – ?

Otherwise – it was an interesting day – and had the chance to say hi to attorney Rex Butler, Legislators Jay Ramras and Les Gara – and oh, yeah – Celtic Diva, AKM, AKM spouse and Shannyn. :) I saw a few other folks, too, but can’t give it all away!

OK – off to change capes – and hats.

If the legislature had done the right thing and impeached Palin after the Branchflower report…………..they would not have all this mess to contend with.

If they accept Campbell without knowing what he is really all about…………..history will repeat itself.

I hope for the sake of Alaskans, that the legislature have learned a lesson.

They had better grow a spine and stop making excuses about “no political will”.

Those who have “no political will”, are obviously in the wrong job and the results have been disastrous for Alaskans.

Although John McCain foisted Palin on the rest of the country, the only people able to stop her were the Alaskan legislature.

I repeat…What does a governor have to do in Alaska to be impeached? Kill a baby on the steps of the state capitol at high noon?

The legislature were the ones that found her to have excessively abused the power of her office.

Now the entire country gets to put up with her nonsense.

There were tourists trying to get on the Princess bus in front of the Egan and I certainly hope this is not the impression they take home. I didn’t see any folks who supported the override acting anything but civil–and that was with my “mom’s eyes” on.

  24. 24
    deistNo Gravatar says:

I don’t think Alaska should have a lieutenant governor at all. Division of Elections doesn’t need a lieutenant governor, and department of law could probably handle initiatives. We’d have to figure out who would be second in line, but the lieutenant governor is a total waste of time and money. We could get rid of that entire office and absorb its responsibilities elsewhere within Alaska’s government and no one would notice.

The original Alaska constitution only defined a “secretary of state.” The lieutenant governor didn’t emerge until later when the constitution was amended and the secretary of state was replaced with the lieutenant governor.

One interesting item I wasn’t aware of about the lieutenant governor’s responsibilities– he signs legislation. If he doesn’t, it’s dead. (or at least that’s what a former speaker of Alaska’s House told me). I guess the lieutenant governor signs, the governor vetoes. But the governor doesn’t sign? Am I correct?

As I’ve iterated here before: “Hoorah for Alaska that you are not out of the cluthches of this very sick women”. No doubt Alaskans will overturn most of her demonic evildoing now that she is gone.

Keith Olberman as well as most of the media today are condemning her for her death panel comment which illustrates the level of cowardice and fear-mongering this women uses to intimidate others – or to cause violence, as Miss Death Squad herself did at her ‘terror rallies’ all over this country.

We, americans, have never witnessed the likes of this vulgar, insipid, and evil women out there throwing a lit match on a tinderbox just to get her rocks off and get some cheers from her otherwise uneducated, equally demented crowd.

Sarah Palin will never get near enough to any governmental position in her life now that she’s been outed and dubbed as the “Death Squad Queen”.

Each time she opens her mouth, she screws herself even further from EVER gaining an iota of respect and integrity. Respect and personal integrity are things she knows absolutely nothing about.

Lainey – it was not the Legislators who dismissed those ethics charges – it was her little 3-person Personnel Board (who dismissed most of them as “frivolous” before even reading them). The Legislators actually found her GUILTY of ABUSE OF POWER re Troopergate, but after spending close to $100,000 on the whole thing, they decided NOT to punish her in ANY way.

I would like to help Sarah’s ghost writer. When he/she changed the expression about “no strings attached” to “ropes” it made no sense. String is found in many expressions: (apologies to George Carlin)
    to string someone along
to string someone (or something) up
    apron strings
    pull strings
    string together
    no strings attached
As for rope, yes, it is composed of many strings making it bigger, but the only good expression for roping something brings to mind a cowboy and his lasso, catching and binding a calf for example. There is a rope-line, but the only memory I get is Monica Lewinsky in her beret, so let’s not go there.
Substituting any other word for string (rope, cord, fiber, chain, thread, filament, ribbon, wire, ties) does not carry the same connotation as “no strings attached.”
The moral of the story is: please take some writing classes before working on that book. In fact, better advice might be to take a breath, a deep breath, before posting another Death Panel type statement.

I agree with anyone who thinks the legislature is clueless when it came to voting to approve Campbell as Lt. Gov. Whoopee they overrode Palin’s veto of the energy money. A no brain-er. But when it came to using their brains, i.e. and refusing to accept anyone or anything Palin did as her last acts of quitting, they caved in. So what if it would not be convenient to vote Campbell down? We deserve better. We also deserve better than the guy that did not stand up for himself when GINO took off for the bright lights of the campaign trail and left him twiddling his thumbs, to put it mildly, (I could be much more graphic but it might not make it past the censor button) while Sarah ran the state from her blackberries. As far as giving him a chance goes, people that are afraid to stand up to Palin and say they will continue with her agenda don’t deserve a chance.

Being on YouTube you can save the link on a file on your computer. Much easier to paste from YouTube also.
Keith was really on a roll tonight.

Yes, Keith did probably the BEST vent I’ve ever heard him give. pph Shouting FIRE in a crowded theater, that was already HOT.

You know? I think the “Death Panels” BS was probably the best “present” $arah could ever have delivered. It put the face of ridiculousness on the whole argument. Forced the ‘polite’ people in the Congress to come out swinging, instead of making some mirthless smile at her ignorance while assuming ‘most people know better’.

There’s a LOT of people truly frightened by the ignorance they’ve been fed & fed & fed. After they got to totally SCREWED by the “donut hole” (WITH AARP’S blessing) in the pharmaceutical package under GWB, it’s not surprising that they aren’t feeling much trust.

Way to go Alaska for telling Palin to “take-that” quitter.

On another blog, someone mentioned that Palin is throwing Alaskan politicians under the bus now that she quit. They didn’t give any details, but I didn’t know if it had to do with this vote.

Any truth to that statement? I didn’t read anything about this, but wondered if it’s true.

Thanks for the AARP link. I sent to my parents. They get a lot of scare-tactics emails from Repbublican family and neighbors and they are getting confused.

I asked them to respond to anyone who sends them a “scary” email with a link to that page. I told my Mom to just reply politely to these people asking them to read the AARP page and please stick with the facts.

I think I will send that link to send that link to everyone I know. We need to start spreading the truth.

Thank goodness for people like Keith Olberman and Rachel Maddox. They are the voices of reason and fact. It’s sad though, that there are people who don’t want to believe anything and just want to cause chaos. What happened to being civil?

Every time I see your pictures of the Alaska Legislature in session, I can’t help but think that it looks much like the room where my county legislature meets… not putting down Alaska. But it is amazing that so much importance is placed, nationally, on a place with so little actual impact on those of us in the 48. Shaking my head in wonderment.

It’s not surprising that Palin could not handle the national spotlight. The room metaphorically tells it all. It’s a small place, with important things happening for Alaska to be sure. But still a very small place, with mostly parochial concerns.

In her ignorance, she couldn’t see that. I suppose she still can’t. That’s what narcissism will do to you.

Just for clarification about the room itself, this special session of the legislature met in Anchorage in the Egan Convention Center. Usually it meets in the capitol building in Juneau. AKM

roz #27: Keith Olberman as well as most of the media today are condemning her for her death panel comment which illustrates the level of cowardice and fear-mongering this women uses to intimidate others – or to cause violence, as Miss Death Squad herself did at her ‘terror rallies’ all over this country.

I watched Keith and he was amazing. He said what I and millions of other American’s are thinking. But, what “other” media are you referring to here? Have others called her out? I haven’t heard anything else except someone made a reference to ABC correcting her. Any others? Just curious if you have any further info as to who else is condemning her.

This is her M.O. She makes inflaming, libellous statements with the purpose to rouse her non-thinking adoring followers. Then she backpeddles-but never appologises for her statements being proved untrue. She is a snake and as evil as the snake in the garden story. She has a pretty face, so for many it is hard to believe that such evil is behind it. We can only combat her by pointing out the differences between the goals of the liberal and conservatives. Look at Eunice Shriver who just died. Before her the mentally retarded were not respected and were hidden away. $arah can thank a democrat that her child has rights to be in a regular classroom with special education aides to help him. There would be no funding for these kids if republicans had their way. $arah makes me sick when she says that a proposal by a democrat would in any way take away the rights of the handicapped or disadvantaged. We’ll leave that to the republicans. Amen

I think one of the problems here is that; there is too much information circulating the airwaves at once that you can’t see the forest for the trees. The idea is to make things look very confusing when they are not.

Healthcare will be passed!! They really do not have to do any more town hall meetings. The majority of the Americans already said that they wanted Health Care Reform with a public option.

One big mistake was to give the protestors recognition. If they don’t have a platform to play on; they can’t play. Enough of the talks. Health Care have been talked about enough. It is time for the Bill.

As far as SP goes. She obviously, doesn’t understand Special Need Children. Maybe someone needs to interview her and ask her some pointed questions regarding the programs and laws enacted for Special Need Children. I don’t know about, Alaska. But we have quite a few Down Syndrome Children working and volunteering. Some live, independent lives.

Also, what SP also doesn’t seem to realize is that, some of these children can read and understand the basics of what is said on TV. My mom have been working with Special Need Children for alot years. Palins’ statement was intend frightening for these children and their parents. In their minds; she told them they are about to be killed!!

I think before MSM print what is given to them. Maybe they should read it. SP doesn’t deserve the headlines and airtime. I really want to start seeing and reading about something more positive. This negative energy is destroying and dividing us. It needs to stop!

So, Alaska will get the stimulus money that Palin said no to, but they didn’t over-ride her other vetoes? Did I get that right? And can they go back and try again, or are those a dead issue. Since they tried to vote on all of them together, is there a chance of voting on each one separately so some will have a chance?

And, btw, I want to add my voice in praise of Keith Olberman last night. Hubby, who doesn’t like him (too much theatrics), watched as well and nodded along with every point KO made and agreed that it was well done.

I don’t think the blue flag with the crescent in the picture is ‘islamic’. The person waving it maybe thinks it is, but that is just further evidence of their confusion. If it had a palm tree on it, it could be a south carolina flag.
