A Day in Cambridge – Open Thread

harvard2

We’ve had a fantastic whirlwind stop in Cambridge.  I went to college in this neck of the woods, and it was a real treat being able to walk on the brick paths, and look at the beautiful old ivy covered buildings of the city again.  The oldest building in Anchorage was built, I believe, in 1923.  The lovely house that we’ve been staying in was built in 1907.

The weather here has been HOT.  It got well over 90 degrees today, and this Alaskan felt close to melting on more than one occasion.  But still, I wouldn’t have missed walking around the campus of Harvard and strolling the streets of Cambridge for anything.

Shannyn and I were the speakers today at a presentation at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University. They describe themselves as “representing a network of faculty, students, fellows, entrepreneurs, lawyers, and virtual architects working to identify and engage with the challenges and opportunities of cyberspace.”

berkman

The founder of the Berkman Center, Charlie Nesson states that “the vision is of a generative world in which anyone can speak, anyone can listen, anyone can create a new architecture within which to relate.”

While sitting in the reception area, waiting for the talk to begin, we noticed this hanging on the wall and got a good chuckle.  Yes, Ted Stevens’ “series of tubes” has made it to the halls of academia.

seriesoftubes

The talk was well attended, and we had a great time meeting everyone.  We shared our backgrounds, our blogs, the relationship between bloggers and the mainstream media, the important political issues of the day in Alaska and how the powerful internet community of Alaska blog readers is becoming a real force for change.  We talked about the 2008 election, about Sarah Palin and Ted Stevens, about fish issues in Western Alaska, ethics complaints, and a certain…(cough cough) … legislator who outed a certain blogger using state time and resources.  Let’s just say they weren’t impressed.

Tomorrow we’re off to the Big Apple.  We’ve had an absolutely fantastic time in Cambridge and have been the recipient of much generosity.  OK, basically, we’ve been spoiled to death and we don’t want to go.  Our illustrious host, Peter Schweich, even went out of his way to make (as the final note in a dinner that felt like a symphony of deliciousness) a chocolate mousse.

peter

But New York City calls, so we bid a reluctant farewell to all our new friends.

I came over to post this and then read about Segundo. I will still post it, because our lives go on and our fight continues. His life will continue through his children and until they are ready we will have to carry his light for him.

Just a reminder that we have a place on the forum for members to gather to share their feelings about the loss of Segundo and their support for the Strongheart family and friends. https://themudflats.net/forum/index.php/topic,7925.0.html

I just read this story about the Healthcare debate on Daily Kos.
Looks like Henry Waxman and some of the Dems are taking another route.
They are ready to start playing ‘ hardball ‘. Somebody may get ‘ embarrassed ‘ as well. They want financial documents from the Healthcare Companies.
    ————————————————
” Democrats on a House committee are seeking detailed financial records from dozens of large insurance companies, officials disclosed Tuesday, part of an investigation into ”executive compensation and other business practices” in an industry opposed to President Barack Obama’s plan to overhaul health care.

The request included records relating to compensation of highly paid employees, documents relating to companies’ premium income and claims payments, and information on expenses stemming from any event held outside company facilities in the past 2 1/2 years.”

    Ex-Im Bank disputes Palin attack

The government-run U.S. Export Import Bank is disputing Sarah Palin’s attack this morning on a proposed $2 billion loan to the Brazilian oil company Petrobras.

Palin complained that “the Obama White House is prepared to send more than 2 billion of your hard-earned tax dollars to Brazil so that the nation’s state-owned oil company, Petrobras, can drill offshore and create jobs developing its own resources” and that Obama “chooses to use American dollars in Brazil that will help to pay the salaries and benefits for Brazilians to drill for resources when the need and desire is great in America.”

A spokesman for the bank, Phil Cogan, noted to POLITICO that the bank does not rely on tax money and that Palin’s statement ignores the bank’s central function: To lend money to foreign companies for the purchase of American goods and services.

“It has to be produced by U.S. workers,” Cogan said. Palin’s statement refers to “creat[ing] jobs and health benefits in the U.S.”

“That’s exactly what a purchase financed by the U.S. government would do,” Cogan said.

In this case, Cogan said, the proposed loan would likely finance engineering services, sales of ships to service oil platforms, or drilling equipment.

“This is the government doing what it’s supposed to do: Create jobs and make sure that Americans get a fair shot at selling goods and services — not the British or the French or anyone else — and to help American workers compete on a level playing field,” Cogan said, noting that most developed countries have similar credit-export agencies.

Palin drew her criticism from a Wall Street Journal editorial which also doesn’t mention the bank’s basic function.

Another administration official expressed frustration with Palin’s latest salvo.

“This is like her and her death panels,” the official said. “This is one more example of, ‘Let’s take a situation with a kernel of truth and blow it up and not let the facts ruin a good story.'”

I am embarassed to post anything about that idiot Palin, when a good person has so much sorrow. Please let us know what we can do to help.

  11. Doc Searls says:

It was a treat and an honor to have you and Shannyn come by the Berkman Center yesterday afternoon. Before you came in, all I had heard was “Alaskan bloggers” were coming in. I didn’t realize until Shannyn introduced you (for other readers, Shannyn spoke first) that I was in the presence of *both* Mudflats and The Girl From Homer, in the flesh (and not melting — at least not yet). Believe me, we *were* impressed. I thoroughly enjoyed your talk and the Q&A that followed — and thought of dozens more questions after you left. Thanks again to both of you, and keep up the great work.

It helps more than you could know, and Ann does know we hold her future dreams and peace of mind near and dear to our own hearts. With us standing behind her in sorrow yet hope, she feels our presence. It gives her solace and eventually, much needed support to follow her new path.

God Bless Segundo and his precious family.

  20. BuffaloGal says:

I’m just floored by the terrible news of Ann’s loss. Her words of grief will not leave me for a very long time. I am sure that when we receive word of the best way to help, we will all do what we can. Segundo’s strong, loving, beautiful, smiling face will live on reflected in those of his children. I hope Ann will someday find comfort there.

  24. Say NO to Palin in Politics says:

Martha, thanks for letting us know, it’s hard to believe.

Just a thought, to those who have elderly parents like I do, who watch fake news all the time, you can do this. I’m ordering the DVD of Mad As Hell Doctors for them, they don’t have internet service. The DVD is broken up into chapters also, so they can easily re-listen to a part they may not get right away.

I’m hoping it will answer some questions and enlightened them. I wasn’t real clear on the ordering process so I emailed the site, this is what I got back.

Send me your address, I send you a dvd, and you send a donation ($0-$25) to the address that follows my name, if you are so inclined.

    Pretty easy.

    Thanks for your interest.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mike-nellis/lynn-jenkins-r-ks-has-a-s_b_262289.html

“Because of you, media outlets like the Wichita Eagle have taken note of Jenkins’ do-nothing attitude on health insurance reform and have begun to question the existence of her so-called plan to fix health care. They took her to task yesterday by chastising her “hands-off approach” to leadership as a Congresswoman.

But the hard work isn’t over.

Keep the momentum — tell Jenkins to stop playings politics and share her secret plan!

This crisis continues to get worse; every day 70 more Kansans lose their health insurance. In times of crisis you can either lead, follow, or get out of the way.

Let’s tell Lynn Jenkins if she isn’t going to lead then she needs to get out of the way. We need to flood Lynn Jenkins’ office with emails this week and let her know we won’t allow her to keep her plan secret.

Send your personal message to Jenkins and demand she make her plan public: http://ksdp.org/secretJENKINS

She is in good hands right now with Victoria and Roland Briggs but her loss is great and our hearts break for her. I don’t know what else to say. My family recently suffered a sudden loss and many here posted their thoughts and prayers on my sis’s blog. Perfect strangers are some of the best friends one can have.

    Phoebe and Irishgirl,

Thanks for the kind words! Maybe I will feel better tomorrow. I guess I just wish I was 24 again! There is always my inner Captain America and Billy lurking somewhere in my soul.

If I sell one of my movie scripts (and I think one of these days I will somewhere down the road because I am getting that good now after years of effort at it) I will invite you both to the party! That’s a promise!

After everyone left AKMudstock, six of us sat with AKM and Shannyn for three more hours talking in another part of Rolands. AKM has now come to see it too this way along with Shannyn. The entire Mudflats phenomenon is a Cosmic Tribal Event. There is no other way to explain it. AKM (she is very, very intelligent in person!) somehow stumbled into the control room at the center of the Universe on some plane of consciousness and then communicated it out across the vast planetary reach of the Internet. So here we all are now and we ain’t going away any time soon! None of us! We are all now in this fabulous intrigue together!

Yep. Somehow Captain America and Billy are still running around across the vast limitless inner terrain of my soul!

the person who made this comment on huffpo has a good point, it’s not just the insurance industry who wants to see this fail. Just imagine how many unhappy employees would quit to do something else if they could give up the employee benefits. I think we’d have a much happier country and better run businesses.

    here is the comment:
“A single payer or nationalized health plan such as “Medicare for all” would dramatically change the dynamic between employer and employee in this country and not to the advantage corporations who have developed a business model out of taking advantage of their employees. Imagine how much more leverage you would have on your job, no matter what kind of job it is, If you knew that if you were fired or left that you would still be covered by medical insurance? More corporations than just the ones in the healthcare industry don’t want to see this happen.”

Former Governor Sarah Palin falsely claimed that under proposed health reform legislation, a “death panel” of bureaucrats would “decide, based on a subjective judgment of their ‘level of productivity in society,’ whether [patients] are worthy of health care.” The truth is, there’s no such panel mentioned anywhere in the bill.

As it relates to her comments, we should not forget that back in March when all of these BIG companies were in trouble and many were going under Exxon had reported the single Largest Quarterly PROFITS in History. About 15+ Billion… for 1 Quarter!!
And right before the Crazy Lady came back to Alaska to QUIT, through Texas , she took a 40 K Donation and put it in Her purse.

Is this what $40,000 buys today…? An ad on Facebook???
If she was still an elected official and not an EX-GOV… one might say she was’ paid off ‘ for this Service.

    The Palin Factor
    by Peter Suderman

Richard Johnston and Emily Thorson analyze polling data from the 2008 election and find a close link between declines in support for John McCain and declines in approval for — who else? — Sarah Palin:

John McCain’s August 29 announcement of Palin as his running mate surprised the Republican establishment, the media, and especially voters. She made a strong first impression: she enjoyed high approval ratings after her acceptance speech, and the percentage of voters saying that they intended to vote Republican skyrocketed. But within days of the speech, her ratings began a precipitous slide from which she—and the McCain campaign—never recovered. Throughout the rest of the campaign, vote intentions were closely tied to Palin’s approval ratings: each major Palin approval drop was followed, within a day or two, by a drop in McCain vote intention. No other factor moved McCain support with such precision.
    ——
I hope that continues to hold.

    ———————————————

    bubbles,

I told Dr. Chill in person at Pittsburgh AKMudstock to tell you how inspired I was by you showing up at Dr. Chill’s effort at that first NYC Mudstock. It was a very touching story to witness here on-line! Dr. Chill tried so hard to set it all up and only one Mudpuppy came: bubbles! So you held it with just the TWO OF YOU! And, of course, many that canceled that day have now shown up at the latest one in NYC!

This was very inspiring and would make a good made-for-TV movie!

That inspired me to keep at it here for our THIRD Mudstock (!) here in Pittsburgh which became AKMudstock with AKM and Shannyn here with over 30 Mudpuppies from eight states and D.C.!

So even if just two Mudpups get together that is all the Universe needs to hold a Cosmic Mudstock and warp the flow of energy in the time space continuum! You and Dr. Chill taught us this Mother Teaching that we will all now apply everywhere across the world by all Mudpups everywhere.

Today I admit I am not feeling so well physically, but I will soldier on remembering the days of my youth and the spiritual flashes I got of it at AKMudstock meeting so many wonderful people!

The generation was on the right track in 1969. We then let our guard down and got our asses kicked by blind, raw, naked corporatist power. We have to now go out of this life with guns blazing again one informed post at a time.

I have to agree with you. While it wasn’t the most professional of responses, I’m glad that he took on the people shouting him down. I wish the media would stop saying “the conversation on healthcare is reaching a boiling point” etc., etc., because from where I sit, I’m not seeing anything even close to resembling a “conversation” here. While they clearly got to him, at least he said what a lot of us are thinking: If you want to have a conversation, sure, let’s go. 154. Justina says:

On the oil and war issue: Did you know that the U.S. is planning 7 new U.S. military bases in Colombia, conveniently located right next to oil rich Venezuela?
One base is right on the border of Zulia, the Venezuelan state which has one of its major oil fields.

These new bases are going up to complete the surrounding of Venezuela by U.S. military forces, as we already have U.S. bases on the independent countries of Curacou, a scant few miles from the peninsular city of Punto Fijo on Venezuela’s Caribbean north coast, and on Aruba, a few miles to its east in the Caribbean.

Those bases are in addition to the presence of the U.S.’s newly recommissioned 4th Fleet. The 4th Fleet was originally taken out of service following World War II. Bush II awoke it from its moth ball status with the express intent, according to the then South Com commander, of “Giving Chavez a wake-up call”. Now it patrols Venezuela’s coast area.

The “wake-up” worked, as since the 4th Fleet was stationed off its shores, Venezuela has had to upgrade its defense forces, forcing it to substantially increase its military budget and divert funds which would otherwise be going to improving social services for its people.

Venezuela is still putting billions of its oil profits into human needs however. It has free health care, including dental and optical, for the entire country, as well as free education to the university level, along with subsidized nutrition through government subsidized markes, called Mercals, and subsidized restaurants called Comedors. Thanks to Chavez, very few people are going hungry in Venezuela these days.

But the U.S., despite the change in administration, is presenting a real military threat to Venezuela. And, as I live in Venezuela, a few hours from the Colombian border, right next to an airport, I can report that we are all feeling very personally threatened, given the U.S. history of the illegal invasion of Iraq, the war on Afghanistan and in Pakistan, and the covert war on Iran — all for oil.

If the U.S. would close its 750 + foreign bases and reduce its military budget by half, American citizens could have free health care and education and Venezuelans could use all their funds to improve the standard of living for their people. Instead, the U.S. is forcing Venezuela to defensively prepare for a possible attack via Colombia. Will U.S. imperialism never end?

Oh, and her inspiration Regan? Here’s what he said about Medicare
“he doctor begins to lose freedom. . . . First you decide that the doctor can have so many patients. They are equally divided among the various doctors by the government. But then doctors aren’t equally divided geographically. So a doctor decides he wants to practice in one town and the government has to say to him, you can’t live in that town. They already have enough doctors. You have to go someplace else. And from here it’s only a short step to dictating where he will go. . . . All of us can see what happens once you establish the precedent that the government can determine a man’s working place and his working methods, determine his employment. From here it’s a short step to all the rest of socialism, to determining his pay. And pretty soon your son won’t decide, when he’s in school, where he will go or what he will do for a living. He will wait for the government to tell him where he will go to work and what he will do.

And if you don’t do this [write your Representative opposing Medicare] and if I don’t do it, one of these days you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children, and our children’s children, what it once was like in America when men were free.”

It never came true. Yet, the republican strategy, Worst case/made up scenarios = FACTS.

if anyone were going to destroy Medicare it is the republicans. They don’t want anything to do with Socialism so they are going to go after Medicare and Social Security.

    Precisely.

I highly recommend the book mentioned previously, “American Theocracy”, by Kevin Phillips. It follows the world’s “thirst” for energy from the whaling days through the coal age to the petroleum age and details the world powers that declined because of their failure to adapt to and prepare to adopt new energy sources as old sources dwindled.

    Finite reserves make strange bedfellows.

Very good article: this is a national security issue of balance of power with China and secure source of oil for the USA:

    http://www.politicalaffairs.net/article/view/8252/1/361/

The Lula advisor who briefed COHA envisaged that Obama will attempt to strike a similar deal with Lula on Saturday, or at least initiate a preliminary discussion of the matter. It would be advantageous for the U.S. to secure oil supplies from a country that is politically stable, relatively near U.S. ports, and engaged in the opening rounds of a strategic alliance with Washington.

However, at a time when the United States is running a deficit of nearly $11 trillion, it appears that Obama will be hard-pressed to secure the necessary funds for a deal analogous to the one just signed with the Chinese.

Nevertheless, for Washington, it could be considered a strategic blunder to allow China to gain greater leverage in an area that traditionally has been considered a U.S. sphere of influence.

Furthermore, if the U.S. fails to supplement the Chinese deal it could contribute to the perception that Beijing and Washington are engaged in a strategic rivalry over securing supply lines to finite sources of energy, and in turn enhance grounds for the kind of misperceptions that can lead to conflicts amongst major powers.

    http://www.laht.com/article.asp?CategoryId=14090&ArticleId=340852
The U.S. government is preparing to provide up to $10 billion in loans to finance the development of massive hydrocarbon reserves off Brazil’s coast thought to contain 80 billion barrels of high-quality crude, an amount that could lead to a six-fold increase in Brazil’s current proven reserves and transform that nation into one of the world’s 10 largest oil producers.

But Brazil has been forced to seek external financing because the fields pose an enormous technical and financial challenge due to the depth and thickness of the salt and the drastic changes in temperature as the oil is brought to the surface.

Acknowledging that Petrobras alone is not capable of developing the massive pre-salt reserves, Brazil announced in May that it will invite international oil companies to bid for concessions in that region beginning next year.

The country had previously halted the sale of concessions after the massive finds were made.

This is not exploration. They found a massive reserve and need to get it. It is under a hard salt crust and tough to get at, but so big it is worth it.

Maybe I’m mistaken, but this time it seems there are those who are ready and willing to produce, especially in Alaska, where throughput on the pipeline has declined significantly. 204. lynnrockets says:

I have been rather outraged lately at the behavior of the Tea-Bagger protesters at congressional town hall meetings lately. I do not mean to brag, but sometimes I am very proud that I live in Massachusetts, the “Cradle of Liberty.” In this most blue of all blue states, political discourse is welcomed. Starting with those “Founding Fathers” that conservative Republicans love to invoke so frequently, through those hate filled days of court imposed desegregated school busing in the 1970’s, and right up to today’s Anti-Health Care Reform protests at congressional town hall meetings, Bay Staters have encouraged vigorous public debate. Perhaps it is a by-product of the over 120 colleges and universities in the Boston metropolitan area, that the population is educated and enlightened enough to realize that well informed decision making will trump ill-informed rabble rousing most every time. That might also explain why the Commonwealth has never in its 389 year history, had a Republican Governor serve two full terms.

On August 18, 2009, Representative Barney Frank held a town hall meeting in Dartmouth, MA. There were plenty of Health Care Reform supporters and vocal opponents. Unlike many of his brethren throughout the country however, Frank did not cancel his meeting, phone-in his meeting, or resort to accepting only written questions. On the contrary, he explained precisely why he supported health care reform, allowed opponents to question him and provided thorough fact based answers to those questions.

Whenever an opponent resorted to the Republican Interest Group tactic of simply disrupting the meeting by means of screaming and shouting out talking points, Frank confronted them directly. He shamed them, in no uncertain terms, by telling them that such behavior was counter-productive to their cause and would not be tolerated. When attacked by shouted myths of health care reform, such as mandated coverage for illegal immigrants, death panels and budget implosion, he calmly countered with facts taken verbatim from the draft of the most recent incarnation of the proposed bill. In short, he held his ground.

Most impressive however, was the way in which he handled those opponents that displayed personally derogatory illustrations of the President and/or made Nazi comparisons. He fired back at them without pulling any punches. To one woman that displayed a caricature of President Obama in which he resembled Hitler, Frank berated her by asking what planet she came from and then told her that trying to hold a conversation with her was akin to having a conversation with his living room table. She was silenced by her own absurdity.

Barney Frank has manufactured the template for all members of Congress to utilize at town hall meetings. Have a comprehensive knowledge of your material; express it thoroughly yet succinctly; allow opponents to question you civilly and respond in kind; and when confronted by ill informed obtrusive or insulting behavior, exercise your 2nd Amendment rights and fire back unapologetically. To you Mr. Frank, I say, “Bravo.”

Until every drop of oil that we can lay our hands on globally is gone–whether we take it honestly through purchase, or take it by force through wars–we will NEVER drill our own supplies.

Those companies, and their investors, who own American oil leases will simply wait until the price of oil is high enough, the supplies of it is low enough, and the demand for it universal enough to drill for it.

We are naive if we think we’ll actually have use of our American supplies of oil: those supplies will be sold to the highest bidder on a global market and “following the money” will show you what countries are positioning themselves to be able to buy it.

The connection between the House of Bush and the House of Saud is not imagined.

And oil companies own leases right now but the technology to get the oil is very expensive and oil prices are not now high enough to justify the drilling. Blame the OIL Companies for NOT drilling!

    Facts….such stupid things I know.

Ebert’s post is amazing. His line about Palin being the perfect “conduit” is perfect. I have been thinking about this for days, but he said it better than I could. I was saying she is a puppet, but conduit is a “most awesome” word.

It seems that Palin sold out to the highest bidder to use her name, her snark, her fan base, her “folksy” image to throw red meat out to the masses while hiding behind the safety of her facebook page.

The writing does not seem to be hers and the “death panel” language sounds too slick to be hers. It would appear that she is being paid by someone to be the attack pitbull. But who? This reeks of Rove tactics, but could be Kristol, Murdock, or some other conservatitve organization.

Also too, the timing is too perfect. She suddently quit and within a few weeks she is the attack dog on President Obama’s policies. I believe Ms. Palin lied to the American public again when she said, “There are no plans…you are not listening to me.”. Bull.

I’m betting that someone approached her about this fantastic money making “opportunity”, but it was critical that she quit ASAP to join the GOP lie machine. Hence, all she needs to do is sit back and let the money roll in—no work….all play.

It’s so obvious there’s someone “Rove”-ing around Princess Not-So-Bright now–therefore it’s not so flabbergasting that an uninformed, blissfully (?) ignorant portion of society can be convinced she’s authoring these Facebook posts. It always raises my blood pressure to realize how these clueless sheeple (and I hate that word) can be led by the nose without recognizing it.

Same for the shameful displays at the Town Hall meetings–and I LOVED Barney Frank tearing into that smug young gal who was so clearly clueless about her scripted comments! Can you image if this kind of rowdy opposition turned out at Bush appearances during the last administration?

  220. MI~Annie says:

They just mentioned Palin’s reporting to the APOC on MSNBC, not from the stand point that she had missed the deadline or that what she reported was lacking any mention of the AC stuff. No, they covered how folksy the gifts were, and how deeply she must connect with her supporters based on the types of gifts she reccieved. Ack, apparently I can only watch MSNBC at night. Sorry it just gets my blood boiling when I read stuff on here that barely gets mentioned in the MSM and when it does get mentioned, they’re always giving Palin a pass.

I’d like to say, “thanks for the link” but …. I’m feeling a bit ill. She really messes with my blood pressure, that one does.

A few days ago, over on Palingates, I made a prediction that the next time we heard from buttercup on Facebook, the tone would be just a smidge more “paliney” and a tweak less ” ghostwriter “. Maybe I’m reading it wrong but it sure does seem like they are honing that Facebook voice to become a nice balance of folksy Palin and insightful policy analyst and none of it is her doing.

I’m tellin’ ya – I want to go stomping into that rehab, mental institution, plastic surgery recovery spa, salmon slayin’ station or wherever the flippin’ hayl she is , and drag her lyin’, hateful, faux christian a$$ straight to a press conference and demand that she put up or shut up. Step up to the plate and speak outloud, in 3-D, in front of cameras that will record her spew for posterity. Take questions from reporters. G’head and really own up to “death panels” and all the freaking insanity it’s caused. She talks about being all “bold”. Well DO IT! Come out from your Facebook page. You’re hiding in there like a little kid who has fashioned a spaceship out of an old refrigerator box and really believes he is Luke Skywalker.

    i googled: pittsburgh homeless programs

here is a tidbit of what happened (jointogether.org): In Philadelphia, millions of dollars went to outreach programs for the homeless that did not require sobriety. This strategy lowered the homeless population in the city from 800 to 150 in four years, according to Rob Hess, deputy managing director for special needs housing in Philadelphia.

apparently now there are discussions of how to help the last 150 folks of which many have mental health issues specifically and others still need drug abuse assistance.

  236. ENOUGHwiththetrainwreck says:

buffalo gal @ 18 —- one of the most glaringly interesting parts of pittsburgh is that there was not one (and i mean not even one) homeless person on the streets…….the alleys were clean and neat……no one panhandling….how is that possible? i asked around to some locals and they explained that there were many programs for the homeless.

so — pittsburgh needs to share whatever it is they are doing with other large cities who need to help get the folks off the streets and into a safer environment — and i would hope to help transition them back into jobs and homes.

Money for homeless housing deleted in Palin’s budget, now restored

    by The Associated Press
    Tuesday, August 18, 2009

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Housing programs for the homeless received a $650,000 boost after it was discovered the money had been incorrectly deleted from then-Gov. Sarah Palin’s budget proposal.

The board of directors for the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority approved the money and it was included in a budget forwarded to Palin’s office.

There, the money was apparently compressed into a smaller sum with another pool.

David Teal of the Legislative Finance Division says the lapse escaped everyone’s attention until after the session.

  248. lemonfair says:

AKM – glad you’re having such a wonderful time, and it’s great to read about it.

Beth – Not all politicians are power hungry, or refuse to listen, or refuse to share what they know. I’ve known quite a number of politicians, and many started out doing the grunt work in communities that many of us don’t want to do – being on school boards, town boards, planning commissions, volunteering with all sorts of community activities, and finally reaching a point where they needed to get more involved with the “powers that be” in order to change the things that need to be changed. Howard Dean first got involved, for example, over the right of way for a bike path in Burlington.

Any politician who runs for any kind of office with real power now has to submit him or herself to an intrusion of privacy and the laying bare of all their finances. Most do this willingly. Some let power go to their heads, of course. Many do not, and need our help.

  249. I love this blog.

  250. AKM,

What a great experience for both of you. From what i’ve been able to find out, both you and Shannyn have blown more minds than any Alaska traveling team in our short history. That they are honoring you at the birthplace of American liberalism is something you both deserve and should cherish.

  251. The Rubber Room Hotel says:

AKM, I am glad you and Shannyn are having such a great time and it has been so rewarding.
In the last year I have had the pleasure of being in all the places you have been are are going. Have lots of family in the area. One of my favorites was hitting all the historical places Concord and Lexington and following the trail of the minutemen. It was January when I was there and bitter cold (which was weird being it was 40 below at home) I could just see in my imagination what the patriots were suffering. I bought a great book though I can’t remember the author (sorry) called The Day the Revolutionary War Began. It was great timing and gave me much more reason to fight to help Obama get elected. It was a great way to start last year.
You are fighting a fight to continue a great Idea that began where you are today. I say that the great Men and Women who showed so much courage against such great odds would be very proud of Americans like you!

  252. beth says:

You ever have one of those moments when something hits you and you can’t help but shout to yourself: DOH! (in your head)?

I had one of those moments reading the intro to this Open Thread.

It suddenly dawned on me why I enjoy reading AKMs blog so much. It’s AKMs no-holding-back SHARING of information; what AKM learns, everyone reading the blog ALSO learns! How utterly giving that someone would willingly be the ‘eyes and ears’ for others; how unbelieveably unselfish of AKM to consistently be our eyes and ears for all manner of things!

I didn’t go to Netroots, I haven’t been to the various local/state AK meetings, I haven’t [insert the tons of things I haven’t done, here] but through the totally giving nature of AKM, I’ve been able to ‘learn’ everything that people did and/or said at those gatherings/meetings. How incredible is that?

One thing’s for sure, AKM would never ‘make it in politics’ (as politics is now written) or as a mucky-muck CEO –neither politicians nor mucky-mucks share what they know. For some reason, they seem to feel there is ‘power’ in knowing what other people don’t. AKMs openess and sharing is proving their archaic model of how to motivate people, wrong.

AKM, on these pages and in their blog posts, empowers us all to think, do, and be better, by sharing all that [AKM] has learned. And for that, I’m truly greatful.

And for suddenly realizing what I should have realized months and months ago about why I find it so positive and uplifting to visit the ‘flats, I find myself yelling to myself (inside my head) tonight: DOH!

  253. lynnrockets says:
