Just hi – and hope everyone’s travels are going well. thanks for the reminder about the town hall meeting!

  2. 2

Well I see peeps are being lazy and not starting up any conversations – at least as I am writing this, there is still one lone comment on this thread. OK, I am proposing a topic. I think it may be somewhat in line with some of what AKM has written from her journeys.
(and it is one of my favorite topics)

If we take into consideration that fear is what primarily motivates people who rant on about socialism and other things that seem nonsensical to most of the people who read Mudflats – What can we do as individuals to allay those fears and bring those people into participation in a more reasonable dialogue?

And, saying that they are all too ignorant is not an acceptable answer.

Before anybody thinks I am claiming to be ‘all that’, allow me to confess that at the town hall meeting, I was the only person I heard yelling at someone who pissed me off with their rhetoric. Fortunately for me, I was in the back of the room and there was lots of other noise so my moment of possible infamy was not caught by the cameras or microphones. I am truly grateful.

Green technologies have been stymied by battery technology for quite some time. Recent breakthroughs in solar panel technology (imagine solar cells applied like paint!), wind generation, and several other areas all have needed a breakthrough in battery technology to become viable, breakthrough technologies. This is the most exciting piece of news I’ve seen yet in the realm of new battery technology. For the first time it appears we really are on the brink of turning some green technologies into disruptive technologies. I believe I’ll drink a Coors to that.

In a modest building on the west side of Salt Lake City, a team of specialists in advanced materials and electrochemistry has produced what could be the single most important breakthrough for clean, alternative energy since Socrates first noted solar heating 2,400 years ago.

The prize is the culmination of 10 years of research and testing — a new generation of deep-storage battery that’s small enough, and safe enough, to sit in your basement and power your home.

This afternoon the Presidents Town Hall was shown on C-SPAN. I kept it on the channel and right afterward they were replaying and an event that happened right before the President went in to the town hall meeting.

Inside the White House Michael Smercomish ( A radio Host ) was taping a live call in radio show with questions from various listeners. These were unplanned questions and the President and Michael looked they were enjoying the event.
He was cool, calm and very confident. For those detractors of his out there…. notice there is ‘ no teleprompter ‘ needed to answer the questions. The really dumb people seem to have given up on that point and moved on to ‘death panels ‘ now.

Maybe earlier in the week the real ‘ wing-nuts ‘ might have gotten the whole health care reform debate message side-tracked but I think his confidence is showing here and he is ready to take the fight to them.
From the C-SPAN archives. 30 minutes in length. Taped in the Diplomatic Reception Room, Eisenhower Executive Office Building, Washington, DC, United States

@Writing from Alaska – Can´t hang around to talk, but had to let you know – you are wonderful! You went to the town hall and when you had a moment of weakness you realized…. Good for you. Big hug. Sorry I gotta run now. Morning here and time to do the shopping.
I start thinking that those that yell do not want to listen. Don´t waste your time on them. I´ve seen them on forums and private messaging. Anything the President does is WRONG. Maybe even anything anybody does is wrong. So talk to the people who have not made up their mind yet. When you are talking to the unreasonable on the forums, realize it is not them you are talking to, but all the lurkers and silent majority. Just keep it respectful and factual, even if the one you react too is not, because you still have a chance to convince the others. Just an idea.

A friend of Shannyn posted this on her facebook page. Too good not to share:
Someone probably already caught this, but here is Gov. Palin’s former Communications Director Bill MacAllister on the switch from private insurance (through KTUU) to A STATE PROVIDED HEALTH CARE PLAN :

“I believe that it was the Lord’s will… that I got this job. You know why? Because a couple of months after I got this job, I found out that I had lymphoma, and I would be either bankrupt or dead now, if I had not had this job.”

A fan from CANo Gravatar says:

I think we need to talk to everyone we can. My favorite conservative showed up at dog park today. He’s an old guy who lost his wife last year after a long battle.

He’s very conservative and generally likes to say he has no use for government even though he spent his entire career in the Fire Dept. Go figure.

Anyways, he has often asked me and others for our opinions and we all keep it respectful and reasonable. Dogs are calming and distracting.

Anyways, I told him I’m favoring Medicare for All and keeping the care delivery systems private. What’s funny is that I could tell by his face that he had never heard of that idea. He listens to Rush and faux. After a moment of contemplation, he was back to “well, but it’s government in insurance”.

So OK, it’s his turn to educate me on Medicare. So I just asked him to explain to me what’s wrong with Medicare. Of course, he loves his Medicare and medigap insurance. He and his wife didn’t spend a nickel for care. And I know her care was extensive during her last year and included trips to San Francisco to see specialists. So now that’s he’s had the chance to knock Medicare maybe he’s realized it ain’t so bad after all. Hey, wait a minute it’s actually a well run service. No hassles and no out of pocket thanks to a really good medigap policy from his government pension. He was a Captain in LAFD.

I told him about my private insurance. How it costs me 12K per year before any payment comes from Blue Shield. Also told him how I was stuck. I wanted to price Blue Cross this year and they sent me a form that wanted the details of every visit over the past 10 years. He agreed “you gotta be kidding” on being able to provide that level of detail. And so much for competition.

We talked a bit about how to pay for all of this. We discussed this about Medicare. Back in 1997 it was projected that Medicare would be broke by 2001. However, in 2001 the Trustee projected it was ok until 2029. Bottom line is that it’s a complex formula and is very dependent upon the growth stats for the economy.

Also pointed out that if we replaced private insurance with Medicare for All then we can take the 30 cents of every dollar of overhead and use maybe 25 cents for the delivery of real care to a lot more people.

I don’t know that I”ve changed his mind totally but I think he might have to be a bit more critical the next time someone starts screaming about socialism and the take over of health care.

I’m thinking that one of the biggest lies out there is that a lot of folks think that some how all hc delivery is going to be “taken over” by the government. It just ain’t so.

I think honest conversation with friends and neighbors about the real issues is the way to move this forward. It’s a very complex subject and we need to talk to one another with facts and truth and ideas. We need to calmly state our fears.

I’d like to get a fun button to wear. Kind of “ask me about health care?” but it should be cute and fun. Anybody have any ideas?

I’m off to bed, boy it’s late. But thanks for listening.

No problem allaying people’s fears–just change their basic natures. Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy! Really, though, it seems that what you are asking is akin to asking how we can change all the pessimists out there into optimists. People who buy into fear do that in every aspect of their lives. They see the glass as half empty and spend so much energy making certain no one else gets whatever’s in the glass that they forget to hydrate.

Here’s what I think is interesting…aren’t we (Democrats/Progressives) supposed to be the party of softies? You know: “If it will save only one live, it will be worth the cost?” Aren’t we the party that spends money like drunken sailors? Aren’t we the “atheists”? So here’s my point–a significant %age oof our health care dollars are spent artificially extending life. If we believed in God :-) , we might be inclined to say that we are playing God in those situations…think Terri Schiavo. The concept of Death Panels, while a very slippery slope, would be financially prudent–not a trait we have ever been accused of! It would be very disrespectful to human life–again, not something for which Progressives are famous. Because they believe we are all athiests, it would inply that we would be all for intervening against God’s “actions”. What I am saying is that somehow they have trumped up this fear in spite of the fact that the accusations of Death Panels fly in the face of everything that Progressives and Democrats have ever represented (and the things we have been mocked for!) If they can be fearful in the face of this, I have to believe that they are really intent on just being fearful. (Also, have to infer that they are projecting their own secret desires onto us.)

P.S. My friend’s dad had a stroke recently, but he had a Living Will stating “No Heroic Measures” and “No Artificial Life Support.” BUT Steve’s siblings needed time for “closure”, so they kept him on Life Support until they could all reach consensus regarding their wishes. The cost for the ER to determine that the stroke was too massive to treat: $75,000. Multiply this cost by the # of times this happens in healthcare, and you have probably just paid to cover a lot of the uninsured in the US.

  12. 12
    lemonfairNo Gravatar says:

    @letters from europe: That’s priceless.

also @writing from Alaska. I think we need to keep emphasizing that medicare, medicaid, and the veteran’s administration are all government programs.

Also, I heard on NPR last year of a study that showed that in general when people on the right are shown that what they had believed is incorrect, they simply cling more strongly to their views. So you’re probably right that it might not even do much good to point out that medicare is a government program.

I’d like us to be going to more town meetings and holding up “public option” signs. We’re theoretically more organized than the right, so we’d better be acting like we are. No complacency here! There’s not much I can do locally, cuz all my reps support public insurance, but lots of us are in places where our voices could make a huge difference.

  13. 13
    JustPatNo Gravatar says:

The site somehow editted my post…It cost less than $5000 to determine that Steve’s dad’s stroke was untreatable, but it cost over $75,000 to keep him breathing artificailly until the family was prepared to honor his wishes. Imagine the costs if he didn’t have the Living Will!

    Bonjour à tous!
Just a thought – and will not too surpized to have a few people screaming at me after I voice it! I first became interested in American politics when I started to become intrigued by a man named Barrack Obama, who was at that time running against so many odds, for President of the USA. Today, I wonder if so many of the social problems you face on a day to day bases, which in turn create such a negative impact on the political decisions that are needed to improve the lives of ALL citizens, are the result of just plain ignorance. Surely the need for a truly comprehensive education for all is a primary need to ensure that the next generation will have less hatred, bias, racism and bigotry in their makeup, and therefore more discerning when voting for a public official. I am sure I read somewhere that the level of education in Alaska is one of the lowest in the USA – perhaps that can explain why so many still support Ms Palin. I am however sure that many who originally voted for her believed what she portrayed herself to be, but now realize that she is what in my opinion can be best termed as a sociopath. Yes, she needs to be watched carefully, world history demonstrates only too clearly how often sociopaths have ended up in powerful positions. She has an ignorant, bigoted, and violent base, and I believe is capable of anything to obtain her ambitions. John McCain, you should be ashamed for unleashing this monster.

To be honest, I’m having a struggle reading the posts, emotional so please forgive me. My older Sister, dang I am now the oldest Sis these days.

Okay, in this last February 2009 we lost my big Sis. She was a USPS employee, with disabilities diabetes & later on the job hernias, hassled from when she first got her job all those years ago (yep, from the time she applied she got married & was GASP pregnant) 28some years ago, they never stopped trying to fire her after the Union made them not discriminate due to pregnancy.

Big Sis died about 2months shy of retirement & Social Security. They found the paperwork in her car, cleaning it out after dealing with the mortuary. She spent 12 DAYS! yes 12 DAYS kept alive against her wishes. $190 thousand plus dollars. It was a “teaching hospital” and her last gasp effort to appoint my younger Sis to make arrangements, had told her in the car she wanted “no measures”… well they just started shoveling tubes. Younger Sis finally had to start shouting in the hospital to make it stop.

Like I said, Big Sis had great Federal Medical Insurance, bet she … sorry I’m unable to talk further, please forgive any typos.

scrappy – i feel your pain and anguish……end of life decisions are so important and difficult and emotional……but when they occur while we are in good health or at least before the worst has occurred – then they become a learning process between the person who is telling us their desires and the family members that will be there when those decisions are put into action.

It is much more comforting for the surviving family and loved ones to know intellectually and emotionally that medical decisions are in line with the desires of the person who is ill or dying.

Anyone at any time could be in need of an advance care directive. Here is some information listed by state: http://www.noah-health.org/en/rights/endoflife/adforms.html#Alabama

Organizations such as hospices and Protection & Advocacy Agencies can assist with providing and filling out the forms.

There are also care directives for people at risk of hospitalization for other needs, such as advance care directives for mental health. These directives include important info such as who to contact, whether there are pets in the home, preferred doctor, drug warnings, and permitted visitors. The document is filed with your neighborhood hospital so that it is available if you are admitted.

Actually, paperwork is not always the same depending on the locale. I was a caregiver for a coworker that died from AIDS in here in Seattle 1998. We were kind of the ‘oddity’ of the AIDS community for the 6 years he lasted beyond the expectancy. We weren’t related, weren’t in a relationship (he was as Gay as God made him & I’m as Straight as God made me), we were just coworkers. Since I was the Medical POA for him, I held the ORIGINAL Medical POA document, with copies submitted to each doctor for their files. When we went to the hospital I needed to be able to pull out & show the original.

In Arizona apparently (my younger Sisters handled the caregiver stuff for my Mom & Dad) the paperwork is handled differently. Like I said, they found my Sister’s paperwork which was drawn up by her Attorney later in her car. She was very religious and her two daughters were raised very religiously, one of whom would have kept her alive no matter what. That’s why my Sis wrote on the hospital intake paperwork that Younger Sister would make all decisions. But later the hospital asked no questions. Each day, they shoveled more tubes in until Younger Sis started yelling Who is Authorizing This?

But perhaps all the medical records being electronically synchronized, like Obama is wanting, would make this sort of thing less likely to occur.

Hoken (aka Closet Mudpup), Just had to post again.

What’s really cool is this is going to be a complete turnaround for energy and energy sources.

We have acid burn on our trees out here in Western MA, from the power plants in the mid-west. When we lived in Marblehead, MA (coast) the power plant in Salem was shown to create breathing problems in our kids. Other health problems were clustered in Marblehead, but the plant was never shown to be the cause. Having less power plants would be great for slowing global warming and health issues.

Or how about those in rural areas? Alaska comes to mind, even if the green power source is not sun (sort of difficult for part of the year) these batteries could still be charged by other (thermal heat? wind? )

Taking stress off our aging electrical grid would be excellent also. Less worry about terrorist attacks, ice storms (we had one last year, everyone was off grid for over a week).

So many uses. I think the idea that this is HUGE is correct. The analogy to going from Main frame computers to laptops is appropriate. Everyone thought it wouldn’t make a difference. HA!

    Thanks again.

The good news is that here in ultra conservative Utah, I read 4 letters to the editor in the Tribune that favored healthcare reform, and zero that were anti-reform or supported the actions of the protesters.

In yesterday’s paper, a physician wrote a letter and expressed his disgust at Palin’s “dealth panel” rhetoric and denounced her careless language to describe important end-of-life issues. Plus two more positive letters about reform….zero negative. They also ran a story about the skyrocking costs of HC coverage and the impact it is having on families.

This in a RED state….so that is great news.

Forgive if this has been posted, but I couldn’t help but guffaw.
This is from the Christian Science Monitor. As to the “sanity” bit – we already knew that, right?

The latest rumor wending its way around the Interwebs – and it’s a doozy – has Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin ditching Anchorage for the suburbs of the Rhode Island. According to the Anchorage Daily News, Palin would fund the move to blue state America “with $7 million from her book and a contract with FOX. And, oh yes, she’s never running for office again.”

Silly, right? After all, just a month ago, Palin was using Twitter to wax poetic on the enduring beauties of her home state: I’m “tasting a nibble of AK’s bounty, knowing AKns are never bored;so much to do & discover [sic],” she tweeted. The gossip, for now, is just gossip — the Palin team has remained mum. Still, the Providence Journal thought enough of the rumors to run its own article.

The Journal’s Randal Edgar even tracked down Rhode Island Republican Party Chairman Giovanni Cicione for a quote. Cicione, a conservative marooned in a very blue New England state, wondered what would compel Palin to choose the Ocean State. “Anyone who wants to move to Rhode Island, we would have to question their sanity,” he said.

So what would Palin find if she moved to Rhode Island? A whole lot of Democrats, for starters. As Tabassum Zakaria of Reuters notes, Rhode Island has gone for the Democratic candidate in all but four presidential elections since 1928. According to RI.gov, the state went blue in a major way in 2008 — some 63 percent of the ballots were cast for Barack Obama. Compare that to the 35 percent of Rhode Islanders who voted for the John McCain and Sarah Palin ticket.

On the plus side, compared to the harsh winds of Alaska, the New England winters will feel positively balmy.

    a fan from CA @9
I can relate to your “favorite conservative” story. I do agree with others that for the furthest of the right, there is no hope, but what I am finding is that most of the “conservatives” in my area are just repeating the talking points from Fox. They don’t know much deeper than the TP, and to be effective, I don’t want to start an argument. I take a page from PO’s “common ground.”

Effective yesterday to a lady who is a military wife and hates Obama-
Mentioned the radio town hall this week hosted by Michael Smercoff (sp?) Mentioned that Smercoff is a conservative radio talk show host (tinge of apology in my voice since cons like to be victims.) Suggested she might remember him when he hosted Beck’s show or was on O’Reilley (had to google to get this. Didn’t mention him on msnbc yesterday.) Suggested she watch the video since Smerguy did such a good job. Notice-what I didn’t do is promote Obama or health care. POTUS can do that himself when she watches the clip I will e-mail to her- but NOT from a “liberal” website. (I am waiting for Smerguy to post it on his website.)

I had to listen carefully early in the conversation. She is a military wife and new mother of a soldier injured last month. She has a lot on her plate. When I mentioned PO’s VFW speech and she made a slam on Obama not having trust from the troops, I knew to be careful. Quick- Paul Reicoff and the Iraqi and Afghanistan Veterans of America. I switched to Paul and what that organization is doing. My common ground with her was the fact that many of the troops have felt abandoned the past 7-8 years so they do need to feel the gov’t cares now. (She agreed- missed the Bush implications:) Told her how much this group is impacting gov’t and that is why in “the VFW speech” there was an emphasis on mental health help and suicide rates. I kept mentioned Paul (thanks Rachel Maddow!)

She is a nice lady who has gone through a lot. She is also very afraid- will her husband suffer mentally again like after his last tour? How will her older son cope again? She feels betrayed by the gov’t, and she watches Fox to make her feel as if her fears are justified instead of fixable. In a second I could have ripped her arguments, but why? Right now we have a small little connection. I won’t let that end, and each time I will try to give her a bit more information. Like CA@9, I will do it with just general questions that leave the door open for some thought.
(apologies for misspelled names. I can’t switch back and forth on this computer.)

She can’t hide forever, don’t they all realize when she comes out ( goes Rouge again) and has to speak for herself this will all fall apart!! She is who she is and no amount of training or fake facebook blogging will change that. Of course her faithful only listen to her BUZZ words, military, God, special needs, servants heart, etc.
I want to see her called out, go to face to face interviews with MSM, not just Fox. Quit hiding behind a fake persona and come on out and show us what ya got. Don’t your handlers trust you???? or do they know you don’t have it and are using your name for their political agenda.

I KNEW her camp was doing to do exactly what they’ve just done. They watched for reaction to the professional tone of the previous ghost written posts, made note of our commentary about “lack of snark” and folksy tone and then made adjustments to the voice of the posts, accordingly.

She needs to come OUT from behind that danged thing!! She is SUCH a flippin’ liar. How is it that her hoards aren’t seriously questioning her 3-D absence? This is just crazy! The MSM HAS to start posing the question now.

I have been reading and thinking about what Sarah has been stating lately in her Facebook and have been wondering who’s been writting it for her. They have been well written, not something anyone, or at least not me, would expect from her. And like it or not the phrase “Death Panels” really was a catchy term that immediately got everyones attention, especially her “captured audience” of Palinbots. They quickly spread the term and the Republicans grabbed onto it to use against Obamas Health Care Reform. Now that that term has cooled down, she has come out with a new Facebook stating that tort reform must be included as part of the Health Care Reform. Both statements were carefully word smithed and in my opinion could have only come from the Health Care Insurance lobby. Since when has Sarah been interested in health care? I believe that Sarah has made an agreement with the Health Care Lobby to use her Facebook as an outlet to forword their message to the people. I would be interested in knowing if their are any others out their who may also think she has whored out her Facebook for money.

On July 31 he decided to become a ‘community organizer’ (copycat), lol, he’s teaching and coaching his listeners to be ’10 million watchdogs’ who will report (bark, bark) ‘movement’ on any of the issues from anyone in government so they can ‘amplify’ the bark over the radio and tv. He wants to stop: (1) the health care bill (in any form) (2) Cap and Trade (3) Card Check.

    He says:

“We need to watch ‑‑ quite honestly we need to guard, as much as I hate every member of congress, we need to guard congress because the executive branch is devouring all other branches. They are devouring it, and the people in congress are so stupid, so insipid or so in on the game, they are going to find themselves irrelevant wildly fast. We must guard all three branches of government. It is a shell game. It is a transformation.”

“Stop the machinery of this government because they are building something, and you do not want to have that unveiled. Believe me, you do not want that unveiled. Stop the machinery of government.”

“We will put the gears into at least neutral. Eventually we will jam that back into reverse. And if we don’t, we’ll strip all the damn gears because it will be time to get out of the car and rebuild it the American way.”

    Anyone seen this from Palingates?

    http://palingates.blogspot.com/2009/08/sarah-palins-bad-bad-investment.html

    Sarah Palin’s bad, bad investment
Sarah Palin criticized the “Obama White House” for lending money to Petrobras, a Brazilian state oil company. According to her 2008 financial disclosure, the Palins had some money invested in T.RowePrice Latin American Fund. Among the 10 largest holdings is… Petrobras.

So it’s OK for the Palins to expect a return on an investment in Petrobras, but it’s wrong for “Obama’s White House” to lend money to the same company?

Sarah Palin’s returns would have no strings attached, but the “bad” loan is made in a way that promotes the creation of jobs for Americans.

I think she should refuse to touch a single cent from this investment, it’s horrible, horrible money.

    Isn’t it?

I think he had an ‘aha moment’ around July 30 to the success and he’s ‘trying’ in turn, to copy it for his own agenda thinking he can turn the tables, dream on.

It will never work, lol, because what we’re doing, we’re doing for the right reasons, showing fairness and compassion to all US citizens and it’s what we all knew needed to happen, he campaigned on it, we agreed and voted him in.

okay, at first she denies any conflict of interest, while expressing her opinions in a very public way, influencing and scaring the public, then 9 days later she resigns because she does not want to have it appear there is a conflict of interest?

whoa, what happened. Do we have serious dirt found? Did this backfire? Was she forced out? Is she a loose gun mavericky repub female? 3 peas in a pod, Scarah, Bachman and Betsy McCaughey. Maybe someones playbook is outdated.

I had no clue one could make that much money sitting on boards. No wonder those sitting on them are ‘selectively chosen and appointed’, nice bit of cash in the pocket for those who clearly don’t even need it. I read a while back that most of the banker CEO’s were on Insurance, Health industry and Pharma boards, imagine that, many boards at a time, the connections are dizzying. But at least it’s becoming harder to be so obvious, that certain secret house on a certain street in Washington is gonna need more rooms. I apologize to those good people out there that legitimately sit on boards and really care, I’m just trying to make a point.

“Some critics have suggested that McCaughey is motivated by other interests – in recent years, she has collected some $23,600 per year in board fees and options from a drugmaking company, Genta Inc., although she resigned in 2007.

She remains on the board of Cantel Medical Group, a medical equipment company that pays her some $30,000 a year in fees.

But McCaughey – formerly married to billionaire financier Wilbur Ross – dismissed as “ridiculous” any notion that the payments show a conflict of interest.”

I was incensed when some of us Democrats compared Bush to Nazis, and I’m still incensed now the some Republicans are doing the same thing to Obama. Those that think they’re right, funny, whatever, have no idea what the Nazi regime represented. My uncle, Gene, was awarded the French medal of Honor after he was wounded three times while calling in strikes on a Nazi occupied town, and refused to be extracted from his position until the town occupied was controlled by allied forces.

What the allies found in the town made them sick, as the men, women and children were slaughtered by the Nazis because they fought back against them. When a regime has to resort to lining up children and gunning them down, then evil has taken hold. To compare Obama, or Bush, to that is just plain sick.

Here in NYC, especially in the borough of Brooklyn (contiguous with the County of Kings, where I was born but where I do not reside), the plural of “you” is “youse,” often rhyming with cruise, but also pronounced with a schwa for the vowels (the midpoint between yiz and yuz). Except for certain neighborhoods, this variant is dying, like regional accents throughout the US. It can be heard in “tough guy” speech in myriad old movies, often coupled with guys, as in youse guys. I’m fond of regional accents, even when they grate on the ears.

    http://www.repoweramerica.org/us/press/alliance-for-climate-protection-blue-green-alliance-hit-the-road/

“A recent Blue Green Alliance report found if the U.S. instituted a national renewable energy standard, more than 850,000 manufacturing jobs at firms already in existence across all 50 states could be created manufacturing the parts for wind, solar, geothermal and biomass power. A Center for American Progress report also found that investing $150 billion a year in America’s clean energy economy could create 1.7 million jobs, which could include jobs like retrofitting and constructing new energy efficient buildings and manufacturing next-generation, plug-in hybrid and electric cars.

“We can create millions of jobs building the clean energy economy — whether it’s manufacturing the parts for windmills, building hybrid car batteries or weatherizing homes to make them more efficient,” said David Foster, executive director of the Blue Green Alliance. “Now we’re combining our efforts to spread the message that by transitioning to a clean energy economy, we can revitalize America’s manufacturing sector and boost our economy for the long run — and create jobs Made in America.”

The Made in America Jobs Tour will kick off Thursday, August 20 in Cleveland, Ohio, and consists of more than 50 events in 22 states, including St. Louis, Missouri; Detroit, Michigan; Gary, Indiana and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and will stress the job-creation benefits of clean energy policies.”

Sanford and Scarah are so alike. I think people in every state should start checking up on their governors and their administrations. None of this would have come out if the ‘affair’ hadn’t been discovered.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/08/21/AR2009082101946.html

“The governor’s use of private planes falls under state ethics laws requiring disclosure. Hazelwood said each of Sanford’s trips needs to be looked at with one question in mind. “Are you being asked to attend this function because you’re governor? If the answer is yes, there needs to be disclosure there,” she said.

Butch Bowers, a Columbia lawyer who advised Sanford during his campaigns, contended if Sanford can show that he believed those trips were provided because of his friendship with the owners of the planes, he didn’t have to disclose them. “That’s inherently subjective, and that subjectivity is necessarily grounded in the person doing the reporting,” Bowers said.”

this is about how the reporting on Rove is being, er…… not reported or front page material.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-conyers/karl-rove-rupert-murdoch_b_264339.html

“When Rupert Murdoch acquired the Journal, substantial concerns were raised about the number of media properties he owned and the right wing bias of his news ventures. Many questioned whether the Wall Street Journal would become just another New York Post or, worse, Fox News.

While the Journal’s editorial page had been conservative for some time, the news division had been largely balanced and thorough. (Indeed, the reporter’s online piece is balanced and thorough.) Many wondered whether Murdoch would put his right wing slant on the news pages as well.

The Journal’s handling of this chapter of the USA scandal seems to bring that question to a head — is it a sign that the editorial staff of the Journal’s news division — or at least its editing — has taken on Murdoch’s right-wing bias?”
