Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Open Thread – Catching Up

Well, it’s good to be back in Alaska.  It’s less than 200 degrees.  Even though it’s raining it still doesn’t feel humid.  And no matter how wonderful any trip is (and this trip was pretty darn wonderful),  it always feels nice to lay your head on your own pillow and let the experience filter through your brain.  I’ve got several more posts to catch you all up on the trip to Netroots Nation in Pittsburgh, Cambridge, and New York City.   Keeping you informed and updated on the goings on was part of our deal.  It was only through your generous votes for my scholarship, and your financial assistance that I was able to make the trip, so you own a piece of it too.

The next couple days will be trying to play catch up at work, get settled in at home, recover from jet lag, blog about the trip and also about what’s been going on in Alaska while I was traveling “outside the bubble” in the Lower 48.  So, stay tuned and thanks for your patience while I readjust to life as usual!

Thanks so much for all your welcome home messages!  It’s good to be back.

I am curious. Everyone says Alaska is very different from the lower 48′s, my son included(he worked there last year from May till Sept.).

Can you explain how you think it is different? When things quiet down?

    lemonfairNo Gravatar says:

Diane – that’s a good question. I’ve noticed that, reading Mudflats this last year. For me as a lower 48er I notice some differences. The first that amazes me is the different view of animals and hunting. Yes, we have hunters here, but in Alaska hunting seems to run in the veins. And the vastness. Alaska has about the same number of people as Vermont, and we think of ourselves as sparsely populated. And yet Alaska also has a bigger city. Burlington only has 35,000. Clearly there’s a lot of wilderness in Alaska where there isn’t anybody, but still. And in Alaska there is more crushing poverty. In the lower 48 some seem to be a little jealous sometimes of the amount of money that goes back to Alaska, but not enough of it seems to go to alieviating basic suffering. Too much infrastructure that needs to be built with so few people. What differences do you think there are?

I’m really curious about Shannyn’s first look at Manhattan! As Just a Girl from Homer, NYC could have been quite the culture shock (we chatted about this on her show).

I know that I (from Detroit, not a small town) was just amazed walking out of Penn Station the first time. The attack on the senses was incredible. (We had taken the train from scenic NJ, so this was my first look-see at NYC).

Just really interested in hearing what went through Shannyn’s mind during that first view of the City That Never Sleeps.

Would also love to see more on the Hahhhhvaahhhhd visit!

I am curious. Everyone says Alaska is very different from the lower 48’s,

I was raised in Phoenix Az. Have to tell you there is nothing more beautiful sensory wise to me than the monsoons, have stood out on the carport for hours during vacations in my old age. The smells, the lightening, palm trees whipping. Yes, heavy rains, floods.

Now, I’ve lived in Seattle since 1970. We have a joke here that “We don’t tan in Seattle, we RUST”. But, for the most part, it’s more of a constant misting rain. I stopped using an umbrella decades ago because they didn’t help that much except for occasional real rains like we had back home, and then it would blow the umbrella top off & practically knock you into the street.

Now, taking a cruise up to AK year before last in July 2007. They said it was a record rain in Ketchikan. I gave up my cheap plastic poncho, as did my Brother from Colorado (he was macho, don’t need no poncho!), when my Sister & Bro came back to the room to ask.

We were late traveling, 4 hrs late arriving. Couple in line behind them for the salmon fishing couldn’t buy a plastic poncho no matter how much they could pay (ship gift shops were closed & no time to go down to the docks).

I was just doing the in town longhouse & old cars tour. My coat was double scotchguarded, no problem, I wasn’t going to be cold like with the cold on the water.

I could NOT believe how my coat got soaked all the way thru just halfway through my tour! Never did get that coat dry, for the rest of the 7-day trip (laundry room was always full). So, that’s how I gauge the AK weather in my experience.

Still, no regrets. That older couple that got our ponchos were so grateful & had a good fishing trip, even had the ship’s chefs cook their salmon to share with their friends. Ran into them later & they had such a happy adventure.

Temps in the 90′s with the storm rolling in, taking forever to break. On page A-9 of our local conservative newspaper, I use the term loosely, really should be described as a bird cage liner rag , and an example of why daily newspapers are in death throes, is a full page ad this morning. It’s headline is “Barrack Obama and the Democrats did not inherit the bad economy; they caused it and made it worse”. The organization paying for the ad is US Citizens Association. I went to their web site to see who funds them, no info. They claim to be a non-profit yet their web site ends in .com. I called the 800 number & a woman asked me if I called to donate, “absolutely not” was my reply. “I do, however, have a few questions, who is funding your group?” She replied “we are a grass roots organization funded by donations from citizens”. I then asked her if there was any affiliation between the org & insurance companies, her reply was “what
insurance companies?” I replied in simple sarah fashion “any of em, all of them?” She once again told me they were a grass roots org, I replied “I bet you are, is dick armey standing next to you?” Things really escalated at that point & we mutually agreed to end the conversation. My problem is that when I google this group nothing comes up & yet they can pay for a full page ad in the first section of a paper that probably has 1/4 million circulation. I would like to call back in a more rational state of mind with facts as to who is behind this outfit. Any suggestions from any savvy mud pups as how to gain this info? Once again, the organization is called “US Citizens Association. thanks, jc

It’s not just Alaska where hunting runs deep. I live in NM and EVERYONE hunts or has some sort of gun where I live. Dove season starts Sept. 1st, so no more early morning or after dinner walks until the season is over – I don’t want to get shot. My father taught me to clean game birds when I was around 10. I don’t hunt – never have, but it’s a way of life. I love animals and would never kill one, but I am a carnivore. I prefer the anonomous meat from the grocery store. I think we have the same independent spirit and the wide open spaces as Alaska, but we are a Blue state, and the town I live in is actually very liberal and accepting of ALL people.

    jc in co,
Check to see if “US Citizens Association” is a 501(c)3. If they are, by law they must disclose IRS form 990 upon request. They cannot hedge, obfuscate, or delay. They can charge a reasonable fee for copying, but they cannot withhold that information. The 990 will contain information regarding their structure, officers, and funding. All donations above a certain threshold are required to be reported – how much and by whom.

Because of the evasiveness you encountered, I suspect that they are not a 501(c)3, but if they are, a simple call to the IRS could land them in a world of hurt. They could be slapped with a big fine for everyday they don’t comply with a 990 request.

To paraphrase Tina Fey mocking Sarah Palin, “I can see Colorado from my house!” (I live in Northern NM.)

Could it be (and I’m just going by what I know of your last governor) the greed, the corruption, the lack of management skills, & the self-propelmanship of your leaders that cause this inadequate, unequal treatment, care and concern for the citizens there? A real “fend-for-yourself, you minions” attitude. It seems to me, with a little bit smarter and sincere approach to financing your state, the money would be enough and go farther, when it’s not used to build custom homes, and pay for family vacations abroad.

    SunSweet,
From whence in NM do you hail? I am one of the few liberals in Los Alamos, the most conservative town in the state. If you live in a liberal town in NM, you must be in the Northern third of the state. For those of you outside the state, most of NM south of Albuquerque is more like Texas and Arizona politically.

When I read posts about what makes Alaska different, much of it sounded like NM. True, AK is MUCH bigger, but in our Western mindset, wide open spaces, issues concerning native populations, and a sense of connection to the outdoors, we have much in common. Even though we get more snow than most people realize, it gets much colder in AK in the winter! For that I am eternally grateful.

Diane, that’s a big assignment you’ve handed out, but as an almost 20-year Alaskan, I’m curious as to what AKM and others will come up with. I know I still can’t explain properly to family Outside what it is that makes Alaska unique. The sheer size of the place lends itself to terrain, weather, and cultures that can be vastly different from one place to another.

I was born and raised in a rural western environment with a lot of distance between things, but it was all on the road system, the weather was similar from one end of the state to the other, almost everyone spoke the same first language, and you knew what to expect even in unfamiliar towns. Here, there are so many places you can only get to by plane, or boat, or in winter by driving on the frozen river. Wasilla doesn’t get the monsoons of the south east part of the state, and Barrow doesn’t get the hot summers of Fairbanks. We are treated to the sounds of many traditional Alaska Native language speakers, and there are over 90 languages represented in the Anchorage School District. Locally, I hear those of the old Soviet bloc often. As an urban Alaskan, I know to expect the unexpected in rural Alaska. The one constant has been the hospitality, and an appreciation for those that bring something to share that’s hard or expensive to get in the village.

We have our own odd vocabulary words – termination dust and Outside come to mind – but so do other parts of the country. I don’t find the attitude toward hunting to be much different from other western states – we eat what we kill, and honestly, I’d rather eat caribou, moose, and wild salmon than feedlot beef. I have a better idea of what they ate and how healthy that is for me.

What makes Alaska home for me is the amazing natural beauty, somewhat slower pace and live and let live attitude (Pastor Prevo and the red shirts aside). Most of us are still from somewhere else, so except for Native Alaskans, we can’t really claim the turf as our own and we don’t care too much what the neighbors are up to as long as they either a) aren’t bugging us or b) invite us to the party. 8)

Here’s wishing all the mudpuppies a great day!

Hi Gasman! Los Alamos is in a very pretty spot in NM. Believe it or not, I live in the Southern part of the state in a small farming community near Las Cruces! Even though Las Cruces is the 2nd largest city in NM, we are often forgotten. Don’t get me wrong, there are very conservative people here, but Dona Ana county seems to be a very inclusive county. Hispanic’s make up the majority of the population, but because Las Cruces is a farming, college, military town, it’s very diverse. When I go to Walmart, I often see women dressed in Burkas, hispanics, native americans, farmers, cowboys, seniors and of course run of the mill anglos. I’m friends with several gay men, who are Dr.’s, and they have encountered little discrimination, and belong to a very active PFLAG group.

I’m going to weigh in on what makes Alaska “different”, or not so much. I lived there 26 years (21 in Anchorage, 5 in Ketchikan) before retiring and coming home to Arizona for my health. I have always felt the “difference” in Alaska was mostly hype, at least if one lives in an urban area. I fished in Ketchikan, but NEVER hunted. Nor did any of my friends. Our food source was Safeway/Carrs. Anchorage was quite urban – I shopped at Nordstrom, bought books at Borders, bought outdoor gear from REI. Anchorage has people from all over the world, and at times could be a quite cosmopolitan place. I disagree with the idea of “crushing poverty”. Most Alaska Natives who live in the Bush (and many white folks, for that matter) lack what we’d consider necessities: running water or flush toilets, but are quite wealthy in other things, like tradition, family connections, attachment to the land, etc. That said, Alaska has the highest per capita rates in the country of rape, child abuse, alcoholism, domestic violence, etc. Perhaps the one thing that distinguished Alaska is the widespread perception that Alaskans are somehow better (think Palin and her “real America” comments) because of their supposed isolation, rugged individualism, etc. Alaska seems to be a final destination for a lot of folks who couldn’t make it in the rest of the country. They’d imagine that they could escape their lives, come to Alaska, and either leave their problems behind or else practice them in a place where they wouldn’t get caught. As I spent my entire time there as a social worker or legal investigator, I know whereof I speak! For my last 10+ years there, I suffered terribly from Seasonal Affective Depressive Disorder, brought on by the many hours of darkness during the winter (even in Anchorage which is fairly south, it got dark around 3:00 PM in the winter and the sun didn’t come back up till around 10:00 AM) Even in summer, the all-too-usual cloud cover contributed to this. I suspect there is a lot of untreated or unacknowledged depression common in the population. So in summary, urban life can seem not so different than life elsewhere, Bush living is quite different, but there remain a lot of challenges there just as far as human interactions go.

Found this posted on a board discussing the US Citzens Association :

According to the Huffington Post this group originally called themselves the Better Government Association. Another group with the same name sued them and they then changes their name to the U.S. Citizen’s Association. It’s unclear who the powers are behind this “grassroots” group but Ed Rollins name came up. See excerpt below:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/06/national-anti-obama-group_n_251011.html

When reached by phone Tuesday, board member Rev. Herschel Gammill of Cathedral of Life Ministries in Canton declined to comment and instead referred questions to Ed Rollins, the Republican strategist who was Mike Huckabee’s national campaign chairman in 2008 presidential election. Rollins, Gamill said, is chairman of the new BGA’s board.

A secretary for Rollins’ Washington-based New Strategies group told the Huffington Post Rollins was recovering from surgery and unavailable to comment. She could not confirm whether he was affiliated with the new BGA.

Calls to the new BGA’s executive director Lance Davis were not returned

( I’ve not googled it yet but I’m willing to bet we can draw a pretty straight line between Cathedral of Life Ministries and all the wacky , wild world of the 7 Mountains madness. Off to check. )

32 Mag the Mick – I agree with you too. Alaska sure has a lot of growing up to do! I’ve lived here since 1975, when I was in my twenties, from growing up in Europe, Asia, WA and CA. It is the last frontier, and the challenges are great. I suppose thats why I stayed, feeling that there is so much “work” to do! And a lot of people get SAD from the darkness – I work in mental health, and case management. But, for me personally, I like the darkness in winter. Its kinda cozy. The kids using flashlights on their way to school buses. I live in Anchorage now, but did live the rustic lifestyle for a year – chopping wood, getting snowed in. Had horses and had to get them water from the bathtub in five gallon buckets in the winter. Life here has its hardiness, but after living in Munich, SF area, and LA area… I enjoy the constant changes and challenges. (I visit my mom in Monterey, CA, and get bored with the consistency).

jc in co — “US Citizens Association” sounds shady. Third article down:
    http://politics4geekz.blogspot.com/

“Here’s what I discovered: This organization– a lobbying group– used to call themselves the ‘Better Government Association’ but was sued by the real Better Government Association (a genuinely non-partisan government watchdog organization that has been around since 1923) and was forced by a court order to change their name. So now they are the “U.S. Citizens Association”. The chairman of their board is a man named Ed Rollins, a Republican campaign consultant and advisor who was worked on numerous campaigns, including Reagan-Bush ’84 and Huckabee ’08 (but has worked with countless other far-right Republicans over the years, such as Newt Gingrich and others). It seems they also have an army of lawyers, who have refused to comment to any press inquiries thus far about the ads. So, you know, a real grassroots citizens group.”

    strangeletNo Gravatar says:

@jc in co: I doubt that they are a 501(c)3. I noticed on their website that their ads have been refused by the WSJ, CNN, and MSNBC, so apparently they have been looking for ultra-conservative (or desperate) local papers to place them.

It turns out that until a few days ago, they were calling themselves the “Better Government Association”. There is a long-standing non-partisan group in Chicago with the same name, who sued them and won, forcing them to change the name and abandon their old URL. Of course, they lie about this too.

    Just another lying hate group.

I’m thinking the papers are ultra conservative with a high concentration of wack-a-doodles as subscribers. I want to point out that I call the Colorado Springs Gazette on a regular basis & tell them my subscription has run out & please stop delivering it. They also call me on a regular basis to see if I want to renew my subscription, I always tell them “No, I don’t like your op-ed page and it sort of makes me throw up in my mouth that your editor was formally the editor of soldier of fortune magazine.” But alas, they continue to deliver. It is good practice for Marley, our black lab, to retrieve it, as we don’t care if he gets a little rough in his retrieval and delivery.

well – for being a grass roots association for all of US citizens, their domain is fairly new – only registered since april of this year. Registered by a patent lawyer in Ohio by the name of Una Lauricia.
    ———-

I think she also specializes in trade marks. Which would be what the “better government association” was suing over — an infringement of their trademark. Wasn’t able to find out who their counsel of record in that matter was, though.

I’m lucky enough to have been born in Alaska and my parents were as well. We’ve been in Alaska since the early 1900′s. My sisters and brothers and I took turns going out commercial fishing with our father as we were growing up. Many of us prefer to continue to live off the land as our parents did when it comes to filling up our freezers with a variety of seafood, fowl and meats. My family continues our tradition of sharing our gathered food with many of our seniors and friends who happen to stop by or if we hear of someone in need. Sharing food is a common tradition among Alaskans.

I like the casual dress code of Alaska – frankly, you won’t see stringent dress codes and you get used to seeing people dressed from one extreme to another, from nice to casual to functional outdoor gear which is a necessity as it would be for someone who lives in Maine. Here is Southeast Alaska, we get a lot milder winters than our Alaskans in the Northern areas of the state and many of the States close to the Canadian borders.

And Alaskans, like many of you scattered across the country are very thankful to be living here and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. I’ve seen more pre-nups being planned around living in Alaska than anything else…some people are pretty set on living here for good!

Good morning back to all you happy morning people….

It is a beautiful wonderland, unique and different according to the geographical terrain. Like the clothes, the weather and the terrain throughout the State goes milder in the South to much colder in the North.

Andrew Sullivan also summed up what is going on. It’s getting kinda predictable isn’t it, next it will be the clean energy bill, so……lets try to get ahead of the attack.

    http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2009/08/john-mccain-on-death-panels.html#more

“I have expressed my frustration with this tactic many times before, and I know it is getting tedious. But, to recap, the tactic is this: (1) Make a preposterous and false claim about a bill. (2) Have the claim disproved. (3) Avoid defending the original claim, but instead observe that the controversy reflects “a legitimate difference of interpretation” about what might happen in the future. Effective opposition in three easy steps!

And so we have a conundrum: Ignore the tactic, and let the falsehood persist, or engage with the tactic, and play into the false appearance of legitimate debate. I do not have a good solution.”

I just received my THIS IS NOT A BILL, but a notice for my records from my Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage. Now, I have a disability. Some doctor from the 70′s who was taking out a breast cyst decided to be helpful and give me some blood. Unfortunately, that blood was tainted with HCV. Didn’t know what was wrong with me until 1989 when I collapsed while teaching school. Took me nine doctors to figure out what was wrong.

I still have the HCV, plus a variety of other things that have gone wrong because of the long term chronic illness. The latest being I got allergic to the thyroid medication I was on, then went off of, now trying to go back to another med PLUS I got severely anemic. Do you know that your gums can actually turn white?

Well enough of the background. I’m on UniCare for the prescription plan. I spent a lot of time earlier this year trying to get them to approve of a medicine that I’d been on for years. They had dropped it from their formulary list, but had been approving it for me. It took them 5 months to just come out and say they weren’t going to do ever again. So my HCV doc and I had to look at their formulary and come up with a substitute that won’t kill my liver. It is more expensive than what I was on before. Jeez.

Having a bit more of brain now, I decided to try to figure out what this letter was about that I had been sent. Now because I my SSD check is low, I’m on LIS. That’s Low Income Subsidy for those in the know. I pay a co-pay between $1.25 – $6.00 depending on the cost of the med. This means when my out-of -pocket drug costs reach $4,350.00 during the coverage year I go to Catastrophic Coverage, then it goes up to 5% of the medication or $6.00 per prescription.

So I have to say that all in all (except the 5 months where I was paying the entire amount; and they were saying your doctor hasn’t sent in the correct forms, when both my doc and I knew she had. Oh, they also had people who would agree with you and say everything was fixed, and then the med would be refused again, and the company had no record of that conversation. I wrote to my Senator and Representatives about this company.) I have a pretty good deal.

I have a friend though who has Lupus, Diabetes, and another disorder who has to pay the deductible first. So her meds are over $400 a month. So she has to come up with the deductible in two months when she can’t afford it. Not only that when the company pays out $2,700.00, she has to pay the full amount again until she reaches $4,112.55.

Who says we need health care reform?

Say NO to Palin in Politics Says:
    August 24th, 2009 at 10:53 AM
here’s a link to the American Veterans Association contact page……get er done Mudpups.

    http://www.amvets.org/contact_us.html
    ————————————-
    Say No to Palin…….Thanks for that link. I see that it also has a toll free 800 number for that Organization. { Who on here has a Military background?}
I have a question for the Pups on here that may be Vets because they may know the inner workings of some of these Orgs. and who has the power of the biggest voice. Which one is that that speaks for them… and would be willing to issue a statement..?… like on the White House page.

Which Org. has the biggest lobbying effort ( voice ) per se. At least they have emails and addresses of their members right at hand if they issued a statement. That is key. They could also get some of their members to go to TH meetings or call Congressmen.

What got me thinking about this over the weekend was AKM’s story about Nazis. I wanted to send that story link to these Vet Orgs., but I didn’t know who they were or there email contacts.
I think we should ask them to read AKM’s post FIRST ( because their memberships need to read it- Maybe in their newsletters as well )…. and then ask about why they are not speaking out with some Statement also. They are letting Fox/GOP use the Vets like ‘ props ‘ ( like someone else we all know )in their little production.
Would some Veterans like to tell us who has the biggest Voice and Power..?
    { maybe AKM knows and could chime in as well}

I would call your local VFW and see if they can tell you something ?

  118. 120
    strangeletNo Gravatar says:

@honesty: That’s an interesting thought. It is an unfortunate fact that the two big traditional vets’ organizations — the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars — have national leadership that is way on the right wing.

It’s differential selection pressure: the local organizations (“Posts” in the Legion) are made up of regular folks who are perhaps a bit more conservative than their milieu (there’s often a significant number of retired military, for one reason). The next higher organizational node (e.g., “District”) is still fairly representative of the local politics. My Dad served a term as commander of his Northern Cali District, and he was about as liberal a Legionnaire as you’re likely to find.

But he could never have gotten elected into the state leadership, even in California. By that level, you’re into serious politics. Just to get nominated, you have to match the national org’s ideological outlook. I believe the Legion was pretty non-political when it was formed, but it was long ago taken over by the right, and, as in any good corporation, they use the rules to maintain their control.

I’m pretty sure the VFW is much the same, although I have no personal experience. Basically, this is why there are other organizations for Vietnam vets, and now Iraq/Afghanistan vets — the traditional organizations have not really had vets’ issues on their front burners for decades, preferring to concentrate on general conservative issues (and flag desecration, of course).

Nevertheless, the folks at the nominal helms of these organizations are real people (as opposed to astroturf people), and veterans, and very likely honorable. There’s also a chance that they remember who the real Nazis were — although it’s unlikely that any of them were in WW2, they’d have to be well into their 80s.

So I think sending AKM’s powerful essay to the national commanders and other national elected officials — and maybe to all the state officials as well — might be worth doing. I could try to pull down a list of names and addresses, but I think it would be most effective if the author actually sent the messages. Or perhaps another Mudpup who is a member. I have rather strenuously declined the Legion’s offer of membership in the past.

    I had that same thought.
According to the IRS info, the 501c4 social welfare designation is sort of a catch-all for organizations that don’t “fit” anywhere else.

BTW, this is the same group that was sued a few months ago by the Chicago-based Better Government Association (founded in 1923) because they were using “BGA” in their original name.

jojobo1 – I love the part of Alaska that lets you move from one extreme to the other – one minute you can be sitting at your desk or at home and the next minute in a boat or a plane heading on another adventure. I never travel anywhere outside of Alaska in the summer and one of our favorite destinations is a cozy place in Glacier Bay which is a 25 minute small plane ride away from Juneau for us. We have a plane so we can transport our golden retrievers and use the plane just as most people would use a boat. There is a wilderness adventure close to wherever you go in Alaska.

I like to smoke and can fish and berries and we get clams and grind them for chowders, etc.. I guess we Alaskans find a lot of joy in the work and fun parts of gathering and you are always going to find a good variety of Alaskan seafood or dishes at any potluck. I grew up with a dad that showed me the joy of sharing his catch with others and the joy of being able to give someone that needed something useful. We didn’t have much in those days but my dad was a successful hunter and fisherman. We all participated one way or another in putting up our own game – smoking, canning, plucking birds, shucking crab or shrimp…you name it. We are a diverse bunch, that’s for sure. Many of us continue the tradition that our grandparents relied upon.

    Anyway,

I would just like to make a comment on the Sherry Johnston case. I hope they can work something out for a halfway house or an ankle bracelet but there must be some consequences. Oxy is killing Alaskan’s youth – Oxy is synthetic heroin. The young people don’t use it for pain, they abuse it and many become addicted immediately. It is an epidemic in many areas of Alaska and in order for those adults to sustain their habits, it has slowly filtered down to the younger generation. This drug is a whole new ball game when it comes to instant addiction for our youth and I’m curious if any of you have been impacted by its abuse.

Supplying this drug to anyone is prolonging someone’s agony- it is a very lonely and isolating drug and people will go to any lengths to get at it and the appetite continues to grow as do the crimes committed to get it. I value everyone’s opinion but want you to know that Oxy kills innocent people too.
