sooooo…….is anyone noting what Gov Parnell is doing? have any opinions on the actions he’s taking? I’m curious. He appears to be adding staff, is this because people are leaving?

“EDUCATIONAL . . . Former Sen. Pete Kelly is the governor’s new special assistant on education, labor, natural resources and education, including UA issues. He served in the Legislature with Parnell and has been a lobbyist for UA for about five years. His appointment should make life easier for the university, no?

Kelly will be stationed in Fairbanks, according to the announcement.

And of course, you all read about Sen. Gene Therriault, a longtime Parnell pal, resigning to work for the governor. Remember how much fun Sarah had filling a vacated Senate seat?”

I also got a kick out of this, lol, way to go Ms. Heinz. It’s from the link I just posted.

“What’s not on the list is interesting, too: a white, beaded vest given to Sarah in 2007 at an Institute of the North conference in Talkeetna. It was from artist and former legislator Cheryll Heinz. Years after one might have expected it be reported as a gift, the governor’s office returned it, saying it was a loan. Skeptical Ear checked with Cheryll. Here’s what she wrote back:

“It was my vest – I had it in my antique store – it was beaded by a local Native man. When I realized that she was not really interested in Alaska anymore, I asked Sean Parnell to deliver this message: ‘Since the vest was presented to you as a loan to wear as governor of our state – and now since you seem to be eyeing something other than being our governor – please return it.’

ya see, reporting gifts really is kinda a big deal. Did Scarah declare the Red Socks tickets? And really, why the H*ll has she been allowed to file so delinquently? 30 days is 30 days! over a year is NOT a timely manner.

    http://washingtondc.fbi.gov/dojpressrel/pressrel09/wfo082109.htm

“Specifically, the indictment alleges that during this time, Cooper solicited and received from Abramoff and his colleagues thousands of dollars worth of tickets to sporting events and concerts; that Cooper and his companions allegedly received free or discounted meals and drinks on dozens of occasions at a restaurant controlled by Abramoff; and that Cooper, at Abramoff’s invitation and expense, allegedly hosted a Super Bowl party for his friends at another restaurant Abramoff controlled. The indictment also alleges that Cooper, rewarded and influenced by the tickets and meals solicited and received from Abramoff and his associates, agreed to use his official positions at VOA and the Department of Labor to advance Abramoff’s interests and those of his clients. In addition, the indictment alleges that from approximately 1998 to 2000, Cooper received from Abramoff and his colleagues thousands of dollars worth of tickets to concerts and sporting events while Cooper was serving as a Congressional staffer.

The indictment also charges Cooper with concealing his relationship with Abramoff, Abramoff’s colleagues and clients and the public by, among other things, failing to report certain gifts received from Abramoff on his annual financial disclosure forms, as he was required to do as a high-level official in both the legislative and executive branches of the U.S. government. In addition, the indictment charges Cooper with making false statements on his 2003 and 2004 Executive Branch Public Financial Disclosure Reports. Specifically, the indictment alleges that Cooper reported he had received no gifts from a single source with an aggregate value of more than $260 during those years, when allegedly he had received from Abramoff many tickets to concerts and sporting events that required disclosure.

Finally, the indictment charges Cooper with obstructing a grand jury investigation by making false statements to federal law enforcement officials and to the grand jury, and by providing investigators with certain documents that he maintained proved his statements regarding alleged free meals were true, when allegedly he knew that they did not.”

Regarding the new torture report. First, it sickens me.

Secondly, all those people screaming “we want our Country back” don’t seem to have a problem with the fact that “their country”—became a nation that tortured prisoners.

How about this—-I want MY country back. The America that didn’t torture and stood for something good in this world. Thank God Obama is our President.

Those protesters who are screaming that President Obama is a nazi, a communist, a socialist, a marxist, etc, because he is trying to fix healthcare, never uttered a word during the Bush years when American soldiers (plus, soldiers from many countries & Iraqi civilians) died in the Bush/Cheney war……. and America began torturing prisoners.

They are having screaming fits over trying to fix the healthcare system yet they could give a damn that “their county” is responsible for torture.
I actually read a post from one of these anti-Obama/anti-healthcare/pro-torture citizens and he said, America has done good things in this world, so we should have some “wiggle room” regarding torture. OMG…did he just say that?

    I’m saddened and stunned.

I wonder if Cheney’s silence (the last few weeks) has anything to do with this report coming out. He had to know it would point the finger at him—and it does.

    BTW, beautiful clouds.

Say NO to Palin – She’s being protected on many fronts at the moment, at least that’s my take on it. She’s got this big ol’ religious “infiltrate the world and take it over” group that has tentacles all through Washington and big business, and they are covering her butt from their end Then there’s non-religious cult wackado GOP faction that is most likely helping to cloak her in whatever way they can, in order to keep the overall Republican party from tanking completely. If it ever came out that darling Palin was a complete cheat and liar, that’d be that. It’d take them a long time to recover. Right now they can kind of deal with it as long she’s being perceived by most as mavericky and even a bit colorful by way of kooky. It’s balanced out by her adoring fans that will follow her to the ends of the earth. And those of us who see her for exactly what she is have been painted as fringe haters in Obama’s pocket. But if the truth came out then all those in the middle would run to the left, we would be vindicated and the right that supported her would look like idiots.

We need someone with money to put together a proper investigation. Maybe we need to organize a Palinpalooza with concerts happening simultaneously throughout the country. Ticket proceeds would go to the “Damn ‘RIght’ – We See What You’re Doing” fund. Personally, I want to see investigations in to Palin’s doings as well as this freaky religious movement and all the creepy politicians that are involved in it.

I was frothing about the same thing this morning. My guess is that there are many of this extreme right group that has noooo problem with the torture. I’ve heard a lot of that around here. As far as they’re concerned the prisoners should’ve been dealt with even more harshly. These people work from a different reality. (and i’m not saying that sarcastically) Their truths, their values and even their version of God is not the same as others. It’s truly another world. I’ve trying like heck to understand it.

What I would like to see is every single lawyer that squirmed and danced around the Constitution to claim it was “legal” to use torture – I want ‘em disbarred. Disbarred, discredited and anything else I can think of. I’d add torture to the list, but gee… we don’t torture people, y’know?

In general, I’m not terribly impressed by the “haste” (lack of) in restoring our Constitution to its pre-2000 condition. This is not the “change” I voted for. Or thought I was voting for.

I find I’m having to remind myself that it is early days yet, and we will have to deal with the hand we’ve been dealt (or dealt to ourselves). Then I remember what the alternative was and give thanks that we’ve got what we do have.

Bachmann: Prayer and fasting will help defeat health care reform
By Paul Demko 8/24/09 4:35 PM

    Photo: MnIndy
On Wednesday Rep. Michele Bachmann was part of a star-studded “teletownhall” meeting to discuss health-care reform. The event, billed “Keeping Faith with the Unborn,” was sponsored by the Susan B. Anthony List, an anti-abortion advocacy group. The organization’s president, Marjorie Dannenfelser, claimed that there were some 350,000 listeners on the line.
Bachmann was joined by North Carolina Rep. Virginia Foxx, most famous for calling Matthew Shepard’s murder was a “hoax,” and former Colorado Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, who made national headlines by refusing to concede after losing her re-election contest November. But even with such veteran political pugilists sharing the phone line, Bachmann managed to distinguish herself during the 90-minute phone call.

The 6th district Republican quoted the late British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, attacked Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius for receiving political contributions from a medical doctor who was murdered in May, and called on everyone to get down on their knees and pray that health care reform fails. Bachmann didn’t always make sense, but she undoubtedly scared the living daylights out of anyone on the line.

Bachmann repeated the myth, adopted early by Sarah Palin, that the health-care plans being debated in Congress would set up “death panels” to determine which old folks are entitled to health care. “Thank God that Sarah Palin said that,” she told the callers. “These are true.”

In response to a caller from Minnesota who wanted to know if there was a plan afoot in Washington to require all medical doctors to perform abortions, Bachmann didn’t exactly shoot the suggestion down.

“Unless we explicitly restrict these items, I think we can fully expect that these radical pro-abortion individuals could very likely make those decisions,” she told the caller. “All of us who have labored tirelessly in the pro-life cause for years and years and years, we know what these people are capable of. That’s why they have to be tied down by restrictions explicitly in law.”

She also suggested that it might be some kind of religious destiny that hardy souls such as herself are in Congress at this time.

“We all need to consider that in God’s timing that he may have allowed us, as members of Congress, to be in the position that we’re in just for this specific issue right now,” she said. “Everything that all of us have worked together and labored for over the years, all of it could be undermined with this one bill. President Obama realizes that. The radicals that are on the pro-abortion left, they realize that. They could win it all. And the unborn, and the vulnerable, the disabled and those at the end of life could lose it it all.”

But it was Bachmann’s fervent call to utilize prayer and fasting to beat back health-care reform efforts that was the true highlight of the call.

“That’s really where this battle will be won — on our knees in prayer and fasting,” she told the listeners. “Remember: faith without works is dead. So we’re asking you to do all of it: pray, fast, believe, trust the Lord, but also act.”

“Henry Waxman’s move last week to ask insurance companies for their full records on compensation and perks is as consequential as any member of Congress has made in the fight over health care reform, because it has the potential to change the entire narrative around the issue. It’s seen as so successful on Capitol Hill, in fact, that Jay Rockefeller is supplementing it.

A U.S. Senate Democrat asked the top 15 health insurers to explain what portion of premiums go to profits versus patient care, putting further pressure on the companies to explain their business practices as Congress considers sweeping health reform legislation.”

Would it not help enormously if a law was passed whereby an individual running for public office be obliged to have an INDEPENDENT psychological evaluation by a specially appointed board, and that the results be in the public domain. We seem to be constantly shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted -a waste of time, energy, money, and resources. I can see no other way to reduce the number of people with sociopathic/borderline tendencies who are elected to position of power. It would not be foolproof as it is well documented that many sociopaths are so clever they convincingly mask their real identities for years and years, but it would expose the less clever ones – as in Madame Butterfly.

Buffalo Gal; I read the Bachman article. From my perspective, the (church) is going through a real identity crisis. It seems to be splitting. From what we read lately, politicians and those in power who are churched, are the biggest hypocrites around, USING christianity as a prop, just like someone we know who uses kids. This (prayer/scripture/God is on our side) PROP is a pathetic way to get votes. But, JMO, God will not honor any of that. He won’t be used. He hates hypocrisy.

Jesus said, “you cannot serve God and mammon”. “No man can serve 2 masters for either he will hate the one, and love the other, or else he will hold to the one and despise the other.”

The Michelle’s, Sarah’s, Newt’s, etc. know this. But they persist to infiltrate the political arena, using the (my faith in God) as a prop, to get fame, fortune, and reverence. If, these people really were concerned about the the future, and health care reform, they would have been going through the normal venues, studying legislative texts, and/or getting a political law degree, work at the federal level, trying to bring about improvements for the people.

But, these, prefer to make grandstanding references to their great faith, thinking that if they show themselves religious, and request fasting and prayer, that God will change laws for them. That is a mockery and offense to the vast majority of christians.

And the lies, the lies, the exaggerations, the smirk assurance and haughtyness of these who think that God just goes along with them……..if there are any christians reading this, please know these are wolves in sheep’s clothing.

One more thing, bible scholars have suggested, from trying to unravel Revelations, that in the last days, the nations will be dominated by one Government, one Economy, and eventually one man who will rule them all ( it sounds like Lord of the Rings). These so-called christian politicians would love nothing better to scare people into thinking this is where we are headed. But, they would love nothing better than to take the reins of power, thus, fulfilling the great prophecy of the end times, that the nasty Anti-christ system would be created by con artists cloaking themselves as religious.

One more thing, a person can be religious, have faith in their God, and quietly show himself/herself approved, by bringing about change through hard work. It’s that individual that I see as a true lover of the things of God. Not someone who boasts and brings up their convictions to a crowd of fanatic devoted applauding followers. Whew, man, I need an aspirin!

Buffalo Gal, thanks for your input in all this.

One more thing, bible scholars have suggested, from trying to unravel Revelations, that in the last days, the nations will be dominated by one Government, one Economy, and eventually one man who will rule them all ( it sounds like Lord of the Rings).
    ———
I’m a preterist with regards to Revelation and believe that all of the events of Revelation were fulfilled during the period of the Roman Empire. Preterists include F. F. Bruce, William Barclay, R. C. Sproul, and James M. Efird (who wrote a great book- Revelation for Today).

Usually the process of becoming President requires so much time in public, and so much examination, that we seem to end up with sane people in charge. The lack of vetting of SP is an example of how that process was bypassed.

McCain is scheduled, according to, OFA website, to be in Sun City, AZ today@11 AM until 1PM. It will be held at Grace Bible Church. Sun City is an elderly community. When I use to work there years ago; the motto was you can work here but not live here unless you were 65 and over. There are a number of individuals scheduled to be there to greet him. However, the Huffington Post has the OFA scheduled to be in Phx, tomorrow (8-26-09) for an open town hall meeting with McCain.

Likewise, there will be a district, Congressman phone town hall meeting (Democrat) at the same time. These events will be held when it starts to get dark in AZ. Remember the assault weapons? in Phx. Can’t be at McCains. I will be trying to across town in the middle of rush hour traffic. These are bad traffic hours. However, I did sign up to listen on the phone. Hopefully, there will be a connection.? Him and I are not strangers. The Congressman, for the District, is more of a Blue Dog but is a nice person.

Senator Kyl, is to have a town hall meeting on Monday (8-31-09) from 7-9 pm. But the location has not been announced. I really plan on being at this one. Again, during the night hours. Of course, alot of people will be off from work. Tired and angry?? but protected by there 2nd Amendment rights. More people signed up for Kyl than McCain. Why? Kyl is worst!!

There also, are rallies that are going to be held in Tempe and Mesa. The cops are going to be kept busy!! Other cities are joining.

I had a crisis at work yesterday that I think only Mudpups could understand. I supervise volunteers who advocate for the needs of elderly patients in nursing homes. Yesterday I was working with a retiring volunteer and the new vol. who is replacing her. The lady who is retiring is a very conservative “Christian”, who’s proselytizing has been a problem in the past. She wanted to introduce the new vol. to a resident in the home who is also of the same conservative, religious ilk. Their conversation quickly turned to health care, and “how wondeful” it’d be if there is a Huccaby/Palin ticket in the next election. I did all I could to not comment, thinking that these elderly ladies deserved some respect, and that it was not my place to make ANY political or religious statements while on the job. But when one of these Christian ladies stated that maybe Huccaby/Palin whould “get rid of that [insert n-word here] for good”, I lost it. I said that I couldn’t stand there and listen to people who claimed to be Christians prove to be so hateful, and that if they were going to talk like that, I was leaving. And I left. It was tremendously unprofessional, but I really couldn’t stand it. I am a little ashamed and embarrassed about not being able to control myself, but hearing this out of the mouths of two little old ladies who are professed Christians was too much.

On another front, I learned today that the Arizona Republic, the state’s most conservative nesletter, printed my “Open Letter to John McCain” today. No answer as yet from the Senator. Maybe he’s still hanging out in Libya?

I believe there are two types of people that run for office, type #1 are those that want power, money and control, and then type #2 (which some could understandably call ‘crazy’ ) who seeks office with the intend to try and make this world a better place for ALL, whilst knowing that many of his endeavors will be met with obstacles, abuse, ridicule, and in many instances downright dishonesty – by type #1. As for a one term limit, that is a splendid idea if one has a bad president, but would not be good for the country if you had the ‘right’ man – which you appear to have now. President Obama is going to need his two terms to get America back on its feet, and to try to undo untangle the sordid and deadly mess of Afghanistan and Iraq (which resulted in worldwide repercussions), created by the Bush administration. And while I know he cannot run for a third term, should he succeed in undoing all the wrong of the last 8 years, in the coming 8 years, then I certainly would consider him crazy to even wish he could run for a third term !

rebekkah @ 39 – I recommend the following sites if you want to really get in to the nitty gritty of the dominionism/ 7 mountain religious movement. It’s like extreme evangelical / pentecostal on steroids with a hefty dose of multi-level marketing and cult mind-control mixed in.

As LisanTX mentioned @38 , Leah Burton’s site has a lot of great info

I also suggest googling : talk2action – click on the “palin information” link on the left hand side of the page. Bruce Wilson and others on talk2 have done fabulous things with this topic.

There are others but those are two really good starting points. I will be launching my own site shortly. I started it while Palin was still in office so it was slanted in her direction but now I’ll be broadening. I won’t be replicating Leah’s but will hopefully be another voice out there covering it all from a different angle. We need as many eyes, ears and voices on this as we can. Mine will be sort of a scaled down Huffington Post style which will bring together links to all of the great sites and resources that are out there.

Beta version is at http://palinreport.presspublisher.us/ This is still very much under construction and content will all be updated. I ground to a halt when she resigned and wasn’t sure what direction to take it in. I’m ready to get back at it again and should be updating this weekend.

I’ve been saying for awhile that I’m firmly convinced this is where many of our problems lie, within this movement. Once we can understand their way of thinking and what they plan to accomplish and also come to grips with the fact that we’ve let it go on this long, we can begin to defuse the situation. We’ve too long ignored it because we thought it was simply fringe lunacy. We failed to remember how easy it is to control people with patriotism and God. Add guns and racism into the mix and we’ve got ourselves a powder keg. Add to that leaders who have positions of governmental and big business power and money and I say we’ve got the makings for something historical and ugly.

Thanks for the link to your new site – it is now bookmarked. The other sites you linked are indeed good resources. I like your take on the twisted x-tian movement – I see it as a much larger threat to the future of our secular state than most are willing to concede. There is a cultural taboo against criticizing people who wave the bible around and say God a lot – even when they’re spouting gibberish or dangerous rhetoric – that has provided them cover from being exposed for what they are. That taboo needs to be challenged and overcome. The biggest warning sign I’ve seen yet came during the pres campaign back in ’07 when Huckabee openly advocated rewriting our constitution to bring it into compliance w/ biblical law, and yet he remained a viable candidate – and still does. The silence of our media (other than Rachel’s “C” Street revelations) is very worrisome. How deep has infiltration of the media reached already, and will the media even be any help in shining a light on this twisted movement and their political agenda?

The following link is to a site that covers “The Rise of the Religious Right in the Republican Party.” It’s is an ambitious work and is not a site one will read in a single visit, but does provide good insights into how the Republican party has become the – IMO – menace to the future of our civil liberties and continued prosperity that it is today.

Then ,to top it off, just as I was drinking a Diet Coke at my keyboard. ,I came across an article on Huffpost about Rush Limbaugh dissing rapper JAYZ for putting Rush’ name in a new song. The line that did it was when Limbaugh said “”I would remind the rapper Jay-Z, Mr. Z, it is President Obama that wants to mandate circumcision. We had that yesterday, and that means if anybody – if we need to save our penises from anybody, it’s Obama”"”"”"”"”"”"”"”

I had to get a spare keyboard while my good one dries out!

I looked for a contact for John McCain and sent him this email
    =============
I’ll be sending an email, as well. I just hope he really means it and really wants to support the fact that Obama loves this country and our constitution. I would love to back McCain up about supporting differing views and recognizing that we have political parties that don’t necessarily agree but we can respect that America is all about the debating, discourse and then, the voting process.

I’ll admit that I considered McCain , early on. I think we’re all hungry for political reps that resound with truth, honesty, integrity and insight and/or intellect.

There were a few moments that I saw/heard it in McCain. Perhaps I more “hoped” it ?

King called it bullshit (his word) and Cheney said interrogation techniques saved us from mass casualty attackes.

So it’s OK for people acting on my behalf to tell a prisoner that they are going to bring in that person’s mother and rape her in front of them, but it’s not OK for Medicare to pay for a doctor to put that person and their mother together and talk about end of life decisions.

I think he is holding Palin in an undisclosed location. But seriously, I think he is doing more than fishing in Alaska.

I have said from the day Palin quit that Cheney was somehow involved, and I still believe it. I had read that Palin and Cheney chatted often before she was picked by McCain. I always found that….errr….odd. Then, she called him right before she quit.

Remember (during the campaign) how she agreed with Cheney about expanded powers of the VP? Come on, she didn’t think of that herself. I think he was somehow involved with picking Palin and now, he is coaching her, guiding her or getting her a job representing big oil.

She is the female version of Cheney—evil. No wonder he loves her…it’s like looking in a mirror.

One of the incidents involved telling a prisoner that they were going to bring his mother in and rape her in from of him.

    That’s OK with them.

But we want to bring the person and their mother in for counseling on end of life decisions and we’re communists, socialists, Nazi’s, French, gay, aliens, anti-American whatever-ists, hate apple pie, boy scouts, puppies, God the father, God the son, scapulars (Catholics in the group?), the Second Amendment and all the ships at sea.

The Yankees tickets were for Palin, her husband, Todd, and daughter Willow.

This may well be a major coverup!!!!! My understanding is that these tickets cost approx. $2150 a seat. If they are claiming $4300 then Willow sat on Todd’s lap! There was some question over the Letterman flap as to whether Willow was even at Yankee stadium. Claiming the cost of the tickets AND saying they were for Todd, Sarah, AND Willow is an attempt to cover up that lie. Sarah figures the value is correct, just the names have been changed to protect the innocent. More research is necessary! There were never any pictures of Willow at that game!!!

They took about an hour to getting around to looking at it and then told me that they couldn’t deal w/ it and that I’d have to go to ER. It also happened to be time for the UC people to go home by then. They have now billed me $232.72 for sharing their assessment of their own lack of skill w/ me.

    UC (no treatment) 232.72
    ER $ 1150.00

Since this is an open thread, I wanted to share information on Leonard Peltier. Some of you may remember “Wounded Knee” from thirty years ago and the conviction of Leonard Peltier.

    From Peltier website:
Leonard Peltier has spent more than three decades behind bars with his rights being repeatedly denied. In 1977, Leonard was wrongly convicted in the killing of two FBI agents amidst the native rights uprisings at Wounded Knee. His trial record is so laden with fraud and illegalities as to mock the fabric of our entire criminal justice system.

Amnesty International and a host of other independent global observers have long since confirmed that the FBI intimidated witnesses, withheld evidence, falsified affidavits and perpetrated every other dirty trick they could find to slap Peltier behind bars.

To this day, in the name of “national security,” the FBI is withholding some 140,000 pages of critical documents, in direct violation of numerous federal statutes. Peltier’s sentence has been wrongfully extended. And his repeated requests for a retrial have been routinely denied.

The late Pope John Paul II, the Dalai Lama, Amnesty International, International Indian Treaty Council, the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Coretta Scott King, Mikhail Gorbachev, Gloria Steinem, Wilma Mankiller, Robert Redford, the European Parliament, and a host of other notables all have worked, petitioned, and pleaded for his release.

For the American Indian Nations as well as the world at large, the continued imprisonment of Leonard Peltier is America’s Judicial embarrassment.

Neo-con Bill Kristol has been enthralled by SP since before McCain nominated her, and still continues to sing her praises at every opportunity.

I read most of what gets published under his name – not because I like what he says, but to stay on top of it for debating my brother-in-law who is a Kristol and Palin fan. (YUCKY)

She obviously doesn’t have the intellect nor the discipline to research and compile those pieces, let alone the grammar. If it isn’t Kristol doing the writing, then I think someone close to him is doing it. Way too many similarities to his style and ideas.

    Interesting story in ADN (seriously!):
    http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/rural/southeast/story/909908.html

“An Alaska state senator will challenge a fishing citation he received and seek a court opinion on whether a state wildlife officer has jurisdiction over subsistence fishermen on federal land.

“Sen. Albert Kookesh, D-Angoon, said Monday the Alaska Legislature has consistently refused to take steps to align the state constitution with federal law governing subsistence on federal land. He believes the state wildlife officer who landed his floatplane on Admiralty Island and cited him and other fishermen for too many subsistence fish had no business being there. “We need to challenge the state of Alaska coming in the back door trying to manage subsistence on federal lands,” Kookesh said.”
