I’m used to taking the red-eye out of and into Anchorage, so it was kind of nice to be flying during the day.  The trip was clear most of the way, so I got a lot of pictures.  Here’s one of the first ones I took.  It’s a cloud over Texas.  Yes, we had to go through Houston twice, and my bag ended up there three times.  Long story.

Enjoy the open thread!

Good morning! Dark, rainy morning. Well suited for the montage tributes to Ted Kennedy that are running. Something about his passing and the realization that it’s the end of the era of Kennedys that many of us grew up with, it’s making me feel inspired to work even harder. For all of their human faults and ticks, they were dedicated Americans who truly loved their country and its citizens. They were the ultimate liberals and were unapologetic.

    >>>What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label “Liberal?” If by “Liberal” they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer’s dollar, then the record of this party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of “Liberal.” But if by a “Liberal” they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a “Liberal,” then I’m proud to say I’m a “Liberal.”<<<

Camelot is no more. Its last shining Knight of the Round Table, Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts passed last night. If his lengthy political career stood for only one thing however, it was the passage of sweeping health care reform. Please do what you can to influence your legislators to keep that dream alive. Do it for Ted. In lieu of flowers, contact them and show support for passage of meaningful reform. Should it become reality, that will be Ted Kennedy’s epitaph.

I can’t remember where I read a commentary about this (maybe Newsweek), but it discussed the strong influences of extremes on the Republicans and Democrats, especially the right wing, evangelical conservative Republicans. It is extremely difficult to meet in the middle and form a consensus when the differences are so great- and members are beholden to their bases who refuse to budge from their positions.

    Good Morning, All…

    Sadly, we mourn again.

The idiots at fauxnews dot com are all bringing up Chappaquiddick, also too. They are inviting Uncle Teddy to burn in he!! for the accident. Mean, nasty folks over there.

I’m outraged that SP publicly expressed “condolences”. There could be no more contrary a person to Uncle Teddy than her and it is maddening to see her faux concern for the family. Stupid hypocrite!

Let’s shine some good news on the day: The fires in Athens, Greece seem to be contained or fully out now. The skies are clearing and assessments are being made. About 150 homes were lost or damaged badly, but thank God, no more than that.

Of course, there is no good news in deaths and injuries. A toll of 1 is 1 too many. Last I saw was around 50.

Brian and I leave a week from today. It will be interesting to have a first hand perspective after watching the fires from afar.

Please keep good thoughts for our Athenian friends that clean up is quick and not too taxing. Let’s hold hope that those displaced are embraced and cared for appropriately. Let’s be solemn in their loss and devastation.

The Facebook remarks are a sad commentary on how this country is slowly splitting. These people are so blinded by their own ignorance that they’ll never accept different ideas, never have any desire to go beyond their tiny universe and only want to be led around by the nose by a bright, shiny object swathed in red leather. As for the Xtreme Xtians–I have one in my family. I no longer speak to her and vice versa. She is the epitome of this breed–anything they do or say is justified as long as they show up in church on Sunday to be “forgiven” and, more importantly, seen by other parishioners as being a good Xtian. Working the coffee hour also helps to get one into Heaven, it seems. Then, they leave and do it all over again. She as much as told me this–also said she was only worried about “number one” (guess who that is). She’s proven this over and over.

Sarah Palin has become the patron saint of this lousy attitude.

Xtreme Xtians – In the early a.m. hours I had another dream where I'm in a gathering of these people and they're asking me if I pray to the right god. (funny – it just struck me that "right god" can work on 2 levels ) When I stated my case and my beliefs they began to sing over me and some began to speak in tongues. The more I tried to present my views, the louder they got. The energy was beyond creepy. When I tried to leave this group leader woman closed and locked the door, grabbed my wrist and began to put extreme pressure on my artery. I began passing out as they all grouped around me. In reading the posts on Ted Kennedy, I’m sure we all remember where we were when we heard of JFK’s assassination. Do you remember a year ago this week where you were when you first heard of Sarah Palin? Here’s wonderful perspective by Gary Mitchell in HuffPo:

“It was exactly one year ago this week that there was a true turning point in the 2008 race for the White House. And it had little to do with Barack Obama. One might even say that it boiled down to the media helping to elect him — but not by supporting him, in the way conservatives often charge. Instead, it involved coverage that very well could have hurt him, but that ended up rebounding in his favor, big time.

Of course, Obama might very well have won anyway, by a very narrow margin. But I believe that a true turning point — though rarely noted — actually came in the summer, at the Democratic convention in Denver. No, it was not the general good vibes about Obama, the ringing speeches by Teddy, Michelle, Bill and Hill, and by the candidate himself.

Rather, it was the electronic media’s overblown coverage of the allegedly widespread threat by female Hillary delegates, and other Clinton fans, to bolt Obama in favor of McCain.

As you recall, the dissidents, known as “PUMAs,” got massive face time on TV and, it was said, represented just the tip of the iceberg. And it was also said (by commentators, not just by the new, pro-Hillary media stars), that women, particularly older ones and suburban/blue-collar types who had voted for Hillary in the primaries, would likely abandon the Democrats in November.

There was no firm evidence for this, of course, and few pundits, on TV or in print, seemed to notice that the same handful of disgruntled Hillary delegates appeared on all of the shows. No matter. Obama’s possible defeat because of the possible defections was widely predicted.

Why did this matter, since the mass defections never happened? Especially since here and elsewhere at liberal political blogs no one ever took the threats seriously?

Because John McCain and his people bought it, hook, line and sinker, as I explain in my book Why Obama Won. This explains the sudden (though often ill-explained) rise of Sarah Palin to the top of their VP list. The McCainites saw an opening, which really wasn’t there, and went completely overboard. Not only did a female VP suddenly look like a great idea, but she would have extra appeal to the particular type of Hillary primary voters so hyped by the media.

The preposterous media coverage of the (few) unhappy Hillaryites at the Dem convention, which was aimed not at helping Obama but maintaining interest in the affair and the coming campaign, inspired McCain to select as his running mate someone who would virtually destroy his campaign.

Recall that after months of trailing, McCain came out of his convention with a bump that led to at least a tie with Obama in the polls — then he plummeted very quickly as the truth about Palin seeped out. In addition, he had lost his chief calling card: an edge in experience on Obama. A week after the GOP convention ended, polls were already showing (as many of us, if not most MSM pundits, had predicted) that, if anything, women thought less of Palin than did men. And surveys continued to show that while she drew crowds she actually drove more people away from the GOP than toward it. In fact, it’s a myth that Palin was broadly “popular.”

Imagine if McCain had picked even a neutral figure such as a Pawlenty or, say, Kay Bailey Hutchison. Yes, Obama likely still would have won (he ran a fine campaign and the economy collapsed). But if McCain hadn’t picked Palin, it would have been in a real nail biter. And Tina Fey would not have been named entertainer of the year, and we wouldn’t have had that turkey slaughtering video to enjoy.”

    Where were you back then. . . . . ?

Re: my post @42 – Well…. turns out the crazies on the right will get a lot of mileage out of the bit about job postings on monster.com for internment/resettlement specialists. The Nat’l Guard and the Army are both advertising exactly that position. The ad says nothing about FEMA or Obama but that’s not going to stop the fire, once started. They are going to insist that the camps are being set up to house conservative subversives that dare to defy the govt. I can just hear Heston growling, “have to pry it from my cold, dead hands”, now.

Somebody in the Nat’l Guard PR dept needs to put together a very clear explanation of what this position is, and quickly. I’m going to see if I can get someone on the phone to explain it a bit.

For Samper and especially for Brian- best wishes for a joyous Greek holiday.

Plato wrote this prayer and attributed it to Socrates.

“Beloved Pan, and all ye other gods who haunt this place, give me beauty in the inward soul, and may the outward and inward man be at one. May I reckon the wise to be the wealthy, and may I have such a quantity of gold as a temperate man and none but he can carry. Anything more?—This prayer, I think, is enough for me.”

May you sense the lingering gods.
As for Brian, whether he may be temperate and how much gold he can carry remains to be experienced.

I have a conservative christian friend who likes Palin and routinely accuses me of Obama worship, so I emailed it to him.

I fully support much of what Obama is trying to do, but in no way do I think he is sent by God as Palin’s followers seem to think she is. I think the GOP and now Palin and her followers are just practicing the Rove tactic of transference, just accuse the other side of what you’re doing yourself.

What bugs me most about fanatical stuff like the “prayer warriors” is that as a christian myself I have to be associated with that. The term “prayer warrior” it’s self is an oxymoron, the two things are not compatible in my head.

This effort to reshape the American psyche has nothing to do with healing the nation and everything to do with easing the nation along in the ongoing radical transformation of America that President Obama promised during last year’s election campaign.<<<

I guess Glenn Beck's doing some "journalist research" into the "czars" of Obama's cabinet. Gawd! I don't know whose bright idea it was way back when to start using the term "czar" for anything having to do with the US govt but they should get rid of it and replace it with something less harsh and more explanatory. Beck and the crazies are acting like this is the first time they've ever heard the title. Of course if Obama tanked the term at this point he'd be accused of "smoke and mirror " tactics.

“”"”"”"”"First things first, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review did in fact write the paragraph Porter quotes … as part of an editorial decrying the fact that “alarmists have taken to banging the orchestral drums heralding the re-emergence of H1N1 swine flu in deafening fashion” and urging them to “chill.”

But instead of chilling, Porter the alarmist took this entirely non-controversial proposal as a sign that the Obama administration was about to set up internment camps and then pointed to a run-of-the-mill National Guard job listing as proof.

Well, you know what? The National Guard has a whole page of job listings on its website that lists dozens of jobs ranging from Cannon Crewmember and Infantryman to Special Forces Weapons Sergeant and M1 Armor Crewman.

So apparently not only is the administration planning on rounding-up and imprisoning conservatives, they are also preparing for an all-out military assault on them.

And I don’t even want to know what horrors await this nation once the Guard fills its quota of tuba, trombone, bassoon, piccolo, and cornet players it is also seeking.

By the way, have I mentioned that Porter served as the co-chair of Mike Huckabee’s Faith and Family Values Coalition and is co-hosting a right-wing conference next month at which Huckabee will be the keynote speaker. Just think it is important to keep pointing that out.”"”"”"”"”

Proof That Socialized Healthcare Works Better Than Our System

There has been a lot of noise in the past week or so regarding socialized healthcare, with critics claiming that systems such as the one used in the United Kingdom (UK) are inferior to the one we have here. My husband, being British, finally cracked and decided to take a look at the facts for me. Bear in mind that his 93 year old mother is alive and well in the UK. She pays nothing for house calls by her Doctor and social workers, preventive screenings or any other healthcare cost. Here’s what he has to say…

The healthcare system in the United Kingdom is almost completely socialized. The government runs almost all healthcare providers and the system is paid for out of taxes. There are private insurance plans, but their only real benefits are private rooms and shorter waiting lists. What worries me is that American critics of the UK system are like lemmings being led over a cliff edge by blind leaders. They are quick to seize on any published failures of the UK system, which the British complain about continually until you ask about the cost and quality of actual care (along with the weather and the train services) but ignore similar problems here. The critics are ignoring the facts.

Let’s start with a couple of observations. In June 2009 a team at Harvard Law School, Harvard Medical School and Ohio University reported in the American Journal of Medicine that three of every five bankruptcies in the United States are now caused by medical bills. That amounts to approximately 3,450 bankruptcies each day as a result of medical bills. Even worse, three out of four of the people declaring bankruptcy as a result of medical bills have insurance coverage. That’s right! They have insurance coverage, but it failed them when they needed it most. The system is broken.

We all know that one sixth of Americans have no health insurance. One third are covered by government schemes. One half are covered by private schemes. Do you understand that, critics of socialized healthcare? One third of Americans are already covered by completely socialized government schemes. Guess what happens when the uninsured have to receive emergency treatment? The government, charities or healthcare facilities pick up the costs. If it’s the healthcare providers they simply increase their prices to the rest of us to cover their losses. Any way that you look at it, the rest of us are already helping provide minimal support to the uninsured. Moving them to a government system will cut costs by providing preventive screening, guarantee healthcare for everyone and allow us to properly account for the costs.

Unfortunately, that’s not the end of the story for the uninsured. There have been calls lately for the President to declare a “War on Diabetes”, which kills 18,000 Americans a year. They are missing the fact that there are around 22,000 excess deaths per year among uninsured adults aged 25-64. Our health insurance system is killing 60 Americans a day by ignoring them.

We reported in an earlier article that the United States came in at numbers 37, 24 and 72 in three studies of the effectiveness of healthcare systems. How can anybody sensibly claim that we’re number one? There are many components to any assessment of healthcare systems, but I’ve summarized a few key facts below. The USA has a much larger population than the UK, so I’ve averaged figures from France, Germany, Italy, the UK and Spain and compared them with the USA. They all have socialized healthcare systems. The total population of those countries is 315 million, which is comparable to the USA’s population of 307 million.

    KEY FACTORS RELATING TO HEALTHCARE

    (first # America 2nd # Europe….Martha)

Factor United States of America Top 5 European Countries
Number of excess deaths per year among uninsured adults aged 25-64.
    22,000
    Zero
Number of bankruptcies per year as a result of medical bills.
    1.26 Million
    Zero
Number of divorces per year to qualify for government aid with medical costs.
    Thousands
    Zero
Percentage of the population without health insurance.
    15%
    Zero
Average percentage of income spent on out-of-pocket medical bills.
    20% 1
    Zero
Average annual cost of healthcare per person.
    $7,500
    $3,400
    Average life expectancy at birth.
    78
    80 2
Infant mortality rate (deaths/1,000 live births).
    6.3
    4.5
Under-five mortality rate (deaths/1,000 live births.
    7.8
    5.6
Percentage of the population rated as obese.
    30.6%
    12.5%
WHO measurement of healthcare system responsiveness (higher = better).
    8.1
    6.8
1 The average out-of-pocket medical bill rises to 35% of income for seniors and the chronically ill.
2 Ranges from 79 to 80.2 with an average of 80.

So, as a nation, we pay more than twice as much per head for our healthcare as the ones with predominantly socialized healthcare, but the only real benefit is that we get treated faster. A cynical person might think that’s because the providers want your money sooner. If you don’t have any insurance, or enough cash/credit, you may have to wait a very long time, or die waiting. I’ve experienced both systems (UK and American) and have family members working in the healthcare industry in both countries. If you look at the above factors there’s no doubt that the socialized systems win hands down.

Re post #66 – MiAnnie – wow, that prayer comment on Sarah’s FB gets me going too. Just to say that when my Dad died, we couldn’t be there with him; I needed consolation, and felt to read Psalm 91. The prayer commenter on SP’s facebook was using verses from that chapter for SP.

My Dad in my lifetime did not lie, he was a very humble man, an old Catholic, feared God, never got in trouble with the law, never took the Lord’s name in vain, was a good father, husband, provider. He kept to himself and was a great example of a christian to me.

If SP’s Facebook friends want to pray for her, that is their right. But, I am getting a sense from these (maybe well-meaning prayer warriors) that they have blindly become idolaters, who place her high up on a pedestal, on the same level as Jesus Christ. AT some point in our lives, we’ve all been bullied, lied to, criticized, unjustly treated, abused maybe by parents, abused by the system, all of us have reason to need that comforting Psalm. Do these prayer warriors pray for the lonely soul who has no home, lying on the floor of a transient building in downtown LA? Why just Sarah Palin, who has so many high-level christian evangelists that she can call at a flick of her fingers, and who would give her the time of day.

Do they think Rick Warren would give them the time of day? No way. So, why do they cater to, pamper a very wealthy woman (SP) who has every pastor at her command to do her bidding?

Do they call on God for these? The downtrodden, poor, sick, discouraged, those in jail?

The hypocrisy of these people knows no bounds. There is another verse, and it’s this. God is no respecter of persons. Lastly, I just breezed through some passages here, if any of these prayer warriors are reading this, it is James 4. “For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in them that make peace”.

My grandpa, Walter Baker, ran Viking Marine Supply, a small boatyard with a marine railway and a series of floats (with big gaps between them) where locals moored their boats. It was one of the few places in town that let fishermen keep their lobster traps. A great place to wander around the darkness of the shop floor as a small boy. So most of my Winthrop visits were right at you come into town across the marshes from Orient Heights.

Say NO @75, is this the vet’s press release?
    —————————–
the problem child in the #99 post has the link directly from the AMVETS organization.{ It is GOOD } ‘ Say no to palin ‘ had posted a link to them a few days ago when I was asking why VETS were not speaking up about how the Vets were being used as ‘ props ‘ for Palin and the GOP. Based on the info link that ‘say No’ provided I called them as well and left a message. ( called the local VFW as well ) I had suggested that they post and or link AKM’s story about Nazis in an email to their Members. ( Maybe others here could suggest this as well ) Said their membership would love the story. And why don’t they publish it in their newsletter… I assumed they had one.

This link to the AMVETS response is also available on the new Twitter account (PalinTruthWatch) that BuffaloGal updates and works on. It was just linked there.
Continue to get the word out. This is a really handy source/tool as a reference. It is slowly but surely getting new Members following. Use it on the other blog ( Huffpo or any others ) threads and point others to it.I tell people Rachel Maddow and Daily Kos follow it. More credibility to get them to take a peek.
And who doesn’t want to know what Rachel is reading and watching.

“Alaska state Rep. Harry Crawford (D) announced Wednesday that he will challenge 19-term Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) next year.

“I’m not a partisan politician and I won’t play political games,” Crawford said in a statement. “Here in Alaska I have worked with Republicans and Democrats, reaching across the aisle to get things done. And in Washington, I’ll continue to be the independent voice our state needs.”

Crawford visited Washington, D.C., earlier this year to meet with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee about a bid against Young. The committee targeted Young last cycle, but he squeaked out a victory despite being heavily favored to lose his seat last November.”

Let’s all post the quote from JFK below on our Facebook, Twitter, etc. or other Social Network mediums for today 08/26/09 in honor of Senator Ted Kennedy. Of course for Twitter you’ll have to shorten it down or use some shorthand.

If by ‘Liberal’ they mean someone who looks ahead & not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, & civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate & suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a ‘Liberal’, then I’m proud to say I’m a Liberal. – JFK

First of all, I would like to thank you for those very kind words.

Secondly I have to tell you that “Slapshot” might be my favorite movie of all time. I realize that it is no “Citizen Kane” but you must understand that that movie is the “Caddyshack” for hockey players. I could not even count the number of times that we watched that on some horrid long bus trip to some remote city for a game. Also too, my connection to the movie is that the screenplay was written by a woman named Nancy Dowd who based it upon her brother’s college hockey days and his teammates at that college. I also played there. In the movie, her brother was portrayed as the character, Ned Braden (played by Michael Ontkean). By the way, I’m “putting on the foil” as we speak.

The scene at the owner’s house was very funny when Reggie Dunlop (Paul Newman) insulted her son’s masculinity. I can only imagine how different Sarah Palin’s reaction would have been to the insult.

I couldn’t agree more. I was very concerned when Raul Grijalva’s name kept coming up among the final two or three being considered for Interior Secretary. The loss of Gov Janet Napolitano is kind of a double hit – had she remained governor, she would be in a stronger position to challenge for McCain’s seat, and it seemed likely she would have challenged w/ her 2nd term of Gov coming to an end. It is likely, too, that education would have not taken such a funding hit as it has w/ our “accidental” Republican gov. The more I read about Brewer, the more she reminds me of $P.

Even if no one is here…no cable, online blinkotv (‘flatter recommended last year, bookmarked)

Quick recap on the nuttybeck show – pushing a New Republic

Show starts, beck states that he is a recovering alcoholic, he will state strong while begging for viewers; ‘get a pencil to write stuff down’; recommends book ‘Prologue to a Farce’ author (?)

Guests: Rush by phone; Rove in person (not on long, made positive references to swwnbn). Later rush requested that beck have him on the show because he’s looking good now since he loss weight–rush was his usual nasty self, longer time on show.

Very concerned about FCC rules changing / Fairness Doctrine; attacks Color of Change, one of the founders (Jones) is now in the Obama administration; he sees the airways being run as they are in Venzuela (!) Has film to prove it film that he ran several times and had Rove analyze.

We are entitled to a free press; less targeting of Pres Obama directly, more about czars, infiltrated during bush admin to shut down free press.

Quoted statistics about diversity in broadcasting whereby broadcasters would have to pay 100 percent of cost (not profit) to support diversity, even with opposing views.

Msnbc is a tool of Obama…on and on. Does this affect satellite radio.
——no reference to the great loss of Teddy; watched about an hour, I don’t watch much cause blinkotv goes in and out; it is physically sickening to watch. I did because clusterfox did not seem to covering Aslan’s passing today. Tune in Thursday and Friday for amazing news and information about how the administration plans to run this shadow govt that will limit freedoms!

Nuttybeck seems to be getting crazier. Lord have mercy on us all.
