They Should Have Listened to George W. Bush
No, you have not come to the wrong blog, nor has The Mudflats been taken over by a brigade of tech-savvy right wing trolls. Eventually, you know we’d have to agree with something the man said.
While the rest of his party was celebrating the choice of novice VP candidate Sarah Palin last August, then-President George W. Bush attempted to inject some reason and caution into the melee, according to a new book by a former White House speechwriter.
“‘This woman is being put into a position that she is not even remotely prepared for,’” Bush is quoted as saying in Matt Latimer’s new book “Speechless: Tales of a White House Survivor.”
“‘She hasn’t spent one day on the national level. Neither has her family. Let’s wait and see how she looks five days out,’” the then-President continued, in statement that appears to be a prediction.
Palin, who started out as the darling of the Republican party, lost her footing when she came under media scrutiny.
Before he knew she was unqualified, he also apparently thought that she was the Governor of Guam, the only position to which she still may be electable.

These kinds of “leaks” are almost always done on purpose. President Bush II was/is popular with many of same variety of people Mrs. Palin is, this message is aimed at them. Notice he made no mention of any politician the GOP might like on their 2012 ticket (at least nowhere I read). This is the GOP’s way of saying goodbye to Mrs. Palin and asking us all to wave bye-bye to the ex-Governor of Guam and make room for the real players.
I wonder how Bush’s wife took the remarks about Hillary’s “fat ass”?

Yeah, I noticed that some time ago. I thought her ears had an amazing resemblance to those of Dr. Zira, and cracked jokes about them a few times.

Any one who was a Democrat in Texas during and after his term as Governor, especially if they knew about Harkin Savings and his other business disasters, knew what to expect. There were voices like Hightower and Ivins who did their best to spread the word, but nobody else cared and nobody else would speak up. Like Sarah the press made no effort to research or investigate. Bush has been a cheat, liar, drunk and wastrel all his live. He’s never changed.

#57 Lori–I had a similar experience last year with the Republicans in my family (they’re in the minority thankfully.). Choice wasn’t the issue, it was economic issues like taxes. Palin was the universal deal breaker.

I’m convinced that he’s smarter than anyone gives him credit for, but not terribly in to politics or the details of governance. That made him useful to Cheney, Rumy, et al.

I think SP’s ears are attractive. Not too many women can carry off the hairdos she does. Any surgery would be for age related changes, not basic stuff.

Did you read the part of the excerpt where he was arguing with his staff because he wanted a speech about TARP to talk about how the government was going to “buy low and sell high”? Once they explained to him that’s not how it would work, that in fact they were going to be buying high and selling low, he was all upset because — once again — he was putting his name on something he had no clue about.

About those ears- there is such a thing as a “Darwin’s point”, a holdover from the furrier animals, but Sarah would have to believe in the theory of evolution to give them their proper name. I like my points, myself, though also too.
Cameron Todd Willingham was executed for an accidental fire and not arson. The fire, as I recall, was in 1991 and he died declaring his innocence in 2004. Sadly, I’m certain he was not the only innocent person killed by state decree.

I grudgingly agree to Bush being right about anything, but as my dad used to say,”Even a blind pig finds an acorn some of the time.”
I actually made calls to Guam on behalf of the Obama campaign (international calls, so not many). People were friendly but a little baffled at the interest. It’s probably not often that people from the mainland call citizens from Guam hoping they’ll help determine who becomes President of the US. Net .5 more delegates for Obama than for Clinton, in a very close local vote.
But in general it seemed clear that the local tradition was to vote for family members, in part because there were patronage benefits, but also because who doesn’t want to support a family member? Presence at the national convention with so few delegates was largely symbolic, so local interests understandably took precedence.
Also, it quickly became obvious that everyone in Guam has two phone numbers that both ring through to the same phone, and that most of them don’t know this. I’m guessing it’s a backup system in case of typhoon.

He appeared to suffer from some neuroligical issues that effected his abilty to access words and string them together, but I don’t think he lacked for intelligence. By all accounts he was very well versed and insightful on topics that intersted him which included all the details of running a political campaign. Saddly for the country he apparently had no interst in most of the tasks that fall under the job description of President. Of course being arrogant and lazy coupled with a world view that saw America as divided into the deserving elite and the undeserving masses didn’t help either.
Everytime I see that picture of Palin wearing what looks like something out of a kid’s dress-up box I’m reminded of a snippit from a favoirt children’s book in which a rabbit had just dyed herself purple, “Purple. Royal purple. Ok, Royal Purple Princes, into the shower with you.” Of course there is not enough water on Planet Earth to wash Palin clean.
