porcupine

Look who came to call on the Autumnal Equinox! This guy kind of waddled all around the perimeter of the lawn, munching on rose hips and old raspberries. He will not get scurvy.

Buf the dog ran over barking like crazy and then … stopped. The porcupine turned around, still chewing, and displayed its giant, thorny backside. Then it went back to eating. That was enough for the dog who has learned the hard way about these creatures. A dog does not forget a chin full of spines and a Leatherman tool.

I had seen this fellow around before, but this time I took my time, inching up to him a few steps at a time and managed to get about 7 or 8 feet away. He was a good sport.

This is not an action film Mr. Norris, this is real life in a country of many millions of citizens and thus, a country of many differing opinions and ideals. But for goodness sake we should be at a point of being able have reasonable debate based on critical thinking. Screaming “eeeeYAH!” while hoisting flags of rebellion and war in this day and age is ridiculous and dangerous . What is your end game ? Storm the White House ? A coup?? You decked out in automatic weapons and ready with your best martial arts moves, bandana wrapped around your forehead, leading the masses? Do you see yourself drop kicking the front door of the White House and delivering a movie line like, ” We were in the neighborhood and just thought we’d drop by”.

It’s one thing to disagree and be angry about what you feel is the country going in the wrong direction but this is not a third world country. It is a democracy and we are mature adults (or should be). Act accordingly and stop being over the top reactionary. Run for office if you want to make a difference. 40 days for choice was started, I am pleased to report, by a reader in response to the anti-abortion 40 days for life campaign, which begins next week. If you have web skills and are interested in helping out, they really need someone to help them put together a “sponsor a picketer” page–email la4choice@gmail.com if you’re willing to help (pro bono–this is pretty much two women working their asses off here).

If you’re not a web developer but are pro-choice and interested, read on.
    Dear Friends,

On May 31st of this year, abortion provider Dr. George Tiller was shot to death in his church. His murderer has told the AP that he knows there are “many other similar events planned around the country as long as abortion remains legal.”

Now, on the heels of this tragedy, Operation Rescue is mobilizing for what they boast will be “the largest, most widespread coordinated pro-life outreach ever.” From September 23rd through November 1st, anti-choice activists will descend upon women’s health clinics nationwide for a campaign of harassment and obstruction.

We need to organize quickly to protect the clinics and the staff who work for women’s health care, as well as the patients who need treatment. To that end, we are compiling a national list of actions planned to counter this anti-choice campaign and need your help. Here’s what you can do:

    1. If you are on Facebook, join the 40 Days for CHOICE group and invite your friends.

    2. Please review the list of targeted clinics. If your local clinic is on the list, call them. Ask how you can help. Remember that they are busy serving women’s health care needs every day, and be ready to organize something independently if they do not have anything planned. Please post any questions to the group, or e-mail us at la4choice@gmail.com for organization help or ideas.

    3. Post or email us with information about clinic defense and counter-demonstrations in your area so we can add it to the national list.

    4. Show up! If each of us passes this information along to every pro-choice person we know, spends 15 minutes reaching out to our local clinic, especially if it’s on the targeted list, and participates in clinic defense in whatever way we can, it will have a huge impact on this attack on every woman’s right to safe and legal abortion.

In Los Angeles, a counter-protest is being organized – e-mail la4choice@gmail.com for details. Please pass along this email and keep passing it along until November 1, 2009.

One of my addictive tv shows last spring was “Out of the Wilderness” filmed in out-back Alaska. It was a survival-style show, but unlike the others, the group needed to cooperate and depend on each other and it was sweet to watch. Also mesmerizing, as I watched these folks endure the elements in the early fall as they made do with elementary shelter (if they could find it) and had to expect to find/shoot all their own food.

I suffered with them through lean pickings such as rodents, and ocassional berries, and SO happy when they spotted and shot a porcupine(slow animal, easy shot)…which…after the painful preparation happened to be yummy eating. I was really caught up in the adventurers’ progress, and was most distraught when it was discovered by Charter that I’ve not been billed for expanded cable and…they pulled my plug! I’ll have to fool around on the web to see if I can find the ending episodes.

GA Peach- when our dog chomped a ‘pine, the vet removed most of the quills (they were even down his throat). Those that broke off in his skin worked their way out on their own over several weeks. Our dog would wait for K to return everyday to feel for quills sticking out and let him pluck them from his face and gums. So. they will work out, but in due time. I think the quills are stonger at the base (base once emplanted), so that could be right.

Reminds me of a few winters ago. We had snow and could see through the falling flakes a large shape up in one of the apple trees. My son and I braved the snow to see what it was. A white porcupine! Pretty cool. Our porcupine stayed around for a couple of weeks, grabbing the apples of the trees.

Our dogs do NOT learn. Luckily, they didn’t meet that one. But we’ve had to take them two the vets a couple of times.

On a sadder note. After having HCV for 35 years, and taking very good care of myself, the docs have found a liver tumor. They are pretty sure it’s cancer. I’ve been in the hospital for a week. Back home now, which is good, because I really missed the dogs.

If I didn’t have Medicare, you know that healthcare provided and run by the government, I’d really be in trouble. I had Blue Cross Blue Shield before and they refused everything 3 times before they would pay 80% of what they thought the bill should be.

For those of us who are tired and sick, write to your representatives that a Public Option must be included.

Now we can tear down what he said, not that he wasn’t allowed to appear.

Porkie quills are barbed on the “business” end (much like many fishing hooks), which is why it can be so difficult to get them out. Once the barb has sunk into flesh (dog or otherwise), it can be very painful to pull out, as you’re pulling against the hook/barb. However, the barb is also what helps the quills continue to move on through flesh and come out the other side…

And dogs that eat dead porkies and get quills stuck in their intestines that get infected and have to be operated on are really dumb.

Quills have small reverse barbs that hold them in the flesh (like a fish hook barb). You can pull them out but left on their own, they tend to work in deeper and eventually come out the other side. Surprisingly, in my experience, they don’t seem to get too infected. The ones that come on through seem to be pretty clean and free of infection (usually).

Better watch out if you have a strawberry patch! Porci’s absolutely destroyed my beds, and my neighbor’s strawberries this year. They nibbled all the leaves off leaving just poor, bare stems. We tried porcupine relocation; chase into a large garbage can, place plywood over top and take 2 miles away to the end of the road at the airstrip. I bet it didn’t take them long to waddle right back. So, a few got bonked; and we are making porcupine barrier’s.

As for the dogs; you got two types, the ones that learn after being poked, and the ones that then have a vendetta against them. Thank goodness my two dogs have learned respect! The last time one got poked it was by absolute mistake, he literally ran into the porcupine, not seeing it until it was too late. Ouch!

You know, some European countries that are democracies have laws against hate speak, and I have several people I’d like to have indicted here for such. Today’s person would be Michelle Bachman, for the murder of the census worker.

Free speech, yes, is in the Constitution, but as everything else, there are ALWAYS exceptions (yelling FIRE, yadda, yadda). I think inciting idiots to violence should be (is?) included in the exceptions.

I suppose some people who have “talked” with hitmen about how it would be so nice if their spouse was no longer in the picture will try and claim they never meant it and they never really thought the hitman would do it, and since THEY didn’t do the killing, they are innocent…….yep, that was just talking, just conspiring, and guess what? GUILTY. Like felony murder. Your honor, I went in the 7-11 with my bud and I never ever knew he had a gun and I had no idea that he was fixin to hold up the place much less kill the clerk and alls I did was hold open the door for him and drive the car and……guess what? GUILTY.

BIll O–guilty of driving an idiot to kill Dr. Tiller.
Bachman–guilty (if it turns out he was killed because he was a census worker) of inciting a fellow idiot to paranoia and violence
Palin/Bill O/Glenn Beck/Hannity/Limbaugh–if ever a hair on our President’s head is so much as touched…..GUILTY for their outright and repeated false witness against the Pres.

I thought about this when I helped during the campaign, there was no way I was going door to door in rural Missouri by myself.

Later a friend asked if I’d be interested in doing census work, I considered it but told her no way if I had to be out there by myself. I’d done census work in Colorado but it was in a town. The hills are packed with people in MO, with lots of woods and no visibility. I also thought about the risks as I rode along with a friend on her postal route, I was considering being her substitute. That’s when I really got a clue about how many places are hidden away in the hills. There is a lot of meth cooking here too.

No way, too much weird stuff happens around her, everyday in the local news there are creepy horrible things reported.

It’s a terrible shame this good man was murdered by some horrible person or people. Awful.

“The 51-year-old Sparkman was found this month hanged from a tree near a Kentucky cemetery with the word “fed” scrawled on his chest, a law enforcement official said Wednesday, and the FBI is investigating whether he was a victim of anti-government sentiment.

“Even though he was with the Census Bureau, sometimes people can view someone with any government agency as ‘the government.’ I just was afraid that he might meet the wrong character along the way up there,” said Acciardo, who directs an after-school program at an elementary school where Sparkman was a frequent substitute teacher.”

  51. 51
    MollyNo Gravatar says:

Ok, if that post doesn’t get through, here’s another one: (What was it I said?)

Free speech is highly overrated; one should not have the freedom to perpetuate an atmosphere of hostility such that the less balanced (thanks Nancy Pelosi for the term) among us feel justified in lashing out violently against the innocent.

A census worker is murdered? What will be next, violence against postal employees? all federal employees? Do people not realize that the “feds” are US? They are not a separate group of people, they are American citizens, your neighbors, your relatives, your friends!

People need to get a grip, and it certainly doesn’t help when some leaders of our government are out there making the unbalanced people even more paranoid.

There are literally millions of Americans who have the virus and the disease but do not know it yet. On a MUCH lighter note: Check out $P at the airport after her “Asian foreign policy/presidential campaign stop/moneymaking trip.” She looks a little tired, but who wouldn’t be?

She and Todd flew across the Pacific, went to an upscale hotel in Hong Kong (PRC), rested up, threw on a rumpled jacket, delivered a prepared-for-her speech with a few folksy embellishments, answered three presubmitted questions, and returned to the hotel for a nap. I imagine she ordered room service (chop suey/egg roll??) so she didn’t have to leave the room and brush up against any of those real Chinese people or (god forbid) learn anything about the country she was so fortunate to be paid $300K to visit.

Then she flew home! Here is a picture of her-and-him at the airport. I think she’s looking for stories about herself in the paper. Notice what she has in her hand: looks just like a CO2/nitrous oxide cartridge. Ahem…..if I remember correctly, those can be used to make whipped cream, power model cars and rockets, or inhaled for a high. I’ve probably got it wrong……but she does look in need of a little lift.

Actually, the natives should be the only ones allowed to have sealskin. It is a part of their heritage, and probably killed humanely with all animal parts used. To wear it around the world as a fashion statement by a non native irks me. I have been fighting the slaughter of beautiful baby seals for years. It is the way they are killed and the body left to rot that I denounce. $P’s parading around with her ‘cool Eskimo bag’ is only promoting that. Add that to the way she has treated the native Alaskans, how dare she. It is official..she is scum..

Did the speech really address the interests of Main Street USA? That would have been a good topic to stick with. It would fit with what she knows about (a little better). A report on the plight of small business owners would have given the attendees some good information.

The parts of the speech I read seem to be generalizations and some kind of philosophical stuff. I don’t think investors are that interested in philosophy. They want to know where their money is going.

As usual a disappointment in so many ways.

I also understand selling the products they make from them. I just think (besides having another thing about $P to complain about!) that she should be responsible about her celebrity influence and starting a new fashion craze. I have a few sealskin items (art), and I am being petty I know, but I fear it might start a new rush for baby sealskin, wrapped around the neck some socialite. Here is something interesting that I read.

    Narcissism looks like this…
Your partner treats you and perhaps your children differently in private than in public.

In public they may ignore you and give all of their attention to others, or pretend to be the perfect husband, father, wife or mother, while in private they are sarcastic, haughty and insulting and put people (even friends) down behind their back.

They will also have a very inflated sense of entitlement and ego, thinking that they deserve things that they haven’t worked for or earned and may lie and manipulate people for attention, acting a bit too good to be true. Indeed they can be very charming and this will fool people and so few will believe you if you disclose how they talk to you in private.

They will show little or no regard for your well-being or feelings and may act as if they are superior and more popular than you and show favouritism with the kids (if you have them), while often being cold, arrogant, withdrawn and unavailable.

Nope, Florida dumped her after only one term I think. It was the seat that there were massive fraud charges with, and the Rethuggers forced their guy into the House, in spite of either a) ballot totals for precincts being higher than the eligible voters or b) complete precincts being ignored in the totals. There’s been so many funny elections, I can’t keep up with the reasons

Porcupines…Dateline April 2007, walking with 4 dogs on Long Lake trail in Palmer. 2 Dogs find porcupine, one, a now passed on Lab mix found it first and is filled with quills. 3-legged St. Bernard/Mastiff mix gets into the fray and eviscerates porcupine. Porcupine is dead but St. Bernard and Lab Mix are FILLED with quills and we are two miles from the car. This all happened at the bottom of a very steep hill, which I rolled and fell down trying to get to the dogs.

The other two dogs I tied to trees at the top of the hill. They seemed to have no interest in the porcupine anyway, but just to be safe I tied them before I “fell and rolled” down the hill to the other two dogs.

Once I grabbed the wounded two I headed back up the hill, untied the two that were not involved and proceeded to run the fastest two miles that I had run since high school cross country! One had quills in the nose which were acting as little straws that were pumping blood out in streams. The 3-legged guy had tons of quills in his only front foot, but kept up on our run to the car and to our subsequent $1200 vet bill for quill removal!

(I called the vet once in phone range and proceeded to show up filthy and covered in blood only 20 minutes after the incident)

There is one that lives in our back woods and I’ve only seen him or her a few times, but still, it’s there sharing our land and I just hope that our current crop of dogs heard the stories from our “old guard” and never ever get close enough to come to harm ;-)

Anyway, thought I’d share…my brother also had a porcupine experience where his dog “hugged” on to his chest and had quills that went into his lungs and deflated them. My brother’s vet bill was $11,000 after many weeks of intensive care for his pup, but pup survived and lived to be 14.5 years.

I think something needs to be done with how medicare pays the doctor, hospital bills.I just started medicare in January and went for the medicare physical on 4/22/2009 Some parts were not paid until August and I just got a form showing that my pneumonia shot was paid today Sept 24th. Now I know insurance companies may take a long time also but you don’t get the same info with dates and such that you get with medicare. There has to be some way to process these claims faster.I go to a clinic so I guess they pay the doctors but what about a private practice doctor.I had to give up my private practice doctor because my insurance would not cover me fully if I went to him so I changed to the clinic and have been their for about 17 years and am so glad My physician’s medicare approved. It takes 5 months to pay 57.00 dollars!!!!

    Sarah Palin On Russia
Sarah Palin Lay Into RussiaWatch This Story Online!

Grotesque, unprecedented, bizarre, unbelievable. Sarah Palin was all of that in Hong Kong yesterday. And more. Dressed in a cutesy virgin-white blouse and black skirt with the infamous bee-hive hairdo, she was a blessing to every predicting spectator.

“There’ll be one or two self-deprecating remarks, a reference to healthcare, taxation, out-of-control spending and a poorly told joke,” my investor companion muttered when the lady walked on to the stage of the Hyatt conference room. All he forgot was the bit about Islamic terror. Alas, she did not fail us. “No recording, no photography, no video tapes, no mobile phones,” they kept shouting over the public address system. And you could see why.

It was Sarah’s trip to Asia and her first appearance since her resignation as Alaska’s top Mum. In her state capital, she told us, you could see a moose in the middle of the city. It was not a common sight in Hong Kong. Why, in Alaska, where 20,000 square miles of the state was glacial and with only two humans per square mile, “it seems to me that God just chucked this bucketful of resources there”. It was then we realised that whoever wrote the Palin sermon for her, they had – mercilessly – allowed some of the real Sarah to show through. Even husband Todd got a mention. He had flown with her into Hong Kong. And – here was a reference to the Alaska fish and caviar consumed in this “beautiful”, “magnificent” and “libertarian” part of China – “some of the fruits of our labour, mine and Todd’s, ended up on tables here”. The caviar at the Hyatt, it should be added, comes from Iran.

For those of you who were fans of Tim Russert and his many stories about his Dad –

Big Russ died a few hours ago, passing away peacefully with family by his side. I’m sure our town will give him a beautiful tribute. Big Russ was a regular at the VFW post at my corner and I will be sure to go there sometime this weekend. 70 cent drafts and stories about the Russerts and “Buffalo in the old days” ….. priceless.

I love imagining that father and son reunion.

He’s 47 now and last year got the liver cancer diagnosis on top of the usual alcoholic liver diseases even though he never drank alcohol in his life.
My prayers and thoughts go to you.
