Open Thread – The Joy of Snail Mail

29 09 2009

Long ago, in the days before email, when people wanted to send messages to each other they had to use the U.S. Postal Service.  You know the people that bring you the bills and junk mail?  Them.   It used to be that when you picked up the mail, there was a very real chance that you’d have something in there that was neither a bill, nor an advertisement, but an actual piece of correspondence from a friendly person.

The person who sent the mail used a device called a “pen” which left little ink trails on a piece of paper.  The trails spelled out words, and each person had their own unique “hand writing” which looked nothing like Times New Roman or Arial Condensed.  As a matter of fact, each person’s handwriting was unique and… well… personal!

To celebrate the first anniversary of the Mudflats Forum (the paper anniversary), the fine folks over there have organized a card swap.  This means that if you sign up by this Wednesday, September 30, you can not only send a real card to a fellow Mudflatter, but you’ll actually get one in your very own mailbox!  Yup – ink, paper, stamp, the whole works.

To join in the festivities, you do have to sign up, and you also have to make sure you actually send out your card by October 15th to the Mudflatter who will be eagerly checking the mailbox on the other end.  And when you get your card it will sit in your hand, and you can stick it on the refrigerator, or prop it up on your desk.  You don’t have to click on it, or move it to a folder, and there’s no delete button.  You get to keep it as long as you want.

    Synopsis

Sarah Palin burst onto the political scene at the height of the 2008 presidential campaign and overnight became a national sensation. Adored by the right, bitterly reviled by the left, she is the most polarizing figure to emerge in American politics in decades. Yet for all the dirt digging and gossip that has surrounded her, very little is actually known about who she is, what she believes, and above all, about her plans for the future. In her new book, Sarah Palin tells the story of her Alaskan upbringing, her marriage and family life, her political career, her religious beliefs, and her meteoric rise to national prominence. With her customary blunt common sense, she sets the record straight about the many myths and lies that have been spun around her and lays out her vision for an America that is strong, independent, and free.

it’s a sad state of affairs for cursive writing today:

People often comment on my handwriting (especially when I’m writing a check at the grocery store). It’s the result of many years of penmanship classes all through Catholic elementary school.

On this thread earlier there was the link to the website ” God’s own Party “.
That is the 2nd Leah Burton one she has up. There it has the funny parody clip where Hitler is informed about the release of Sarah’s new book. Someone else had posted the clip on Huffpo as well yesterday to the first site where I saw it.

You might want to save ( or Follow ) this person’s ‘ collection ‘ of YouTube clips as a reference. They use the handle ” frsbdg ” … short for ” Frisbee Dog”. Other clips are in the collection are mostly the ones from Alaska like Mark Begich’s Town Hall meeting just last week. The one that AKM had posted. This person might be an Alaskan… just guessing. Here’s their link.

Can someone please tell me why the Palins Deception blog is no longer being updated?
I loved that blog and the writer obviously worked hard on getting real facts but now they have disappeared.
I lost touch for awhile, but after seeing the Bree pics I thought I would go to the best source.
    Boy and I disappointed.

#52 Skip, in addition to the boogie there’s something really weird about that picture. Her eyes make her look all tweaked out & there’s something going on with her lips/teeth. One of her front teeth look longer than the other, maybe one of her veneers is falling off & she’s squishing up her lips to keep it in? If she does in fact read any AK blogs, it makes you wonder if she read the ADN
comments. If I was her and read them I wouldn’t ever want to leave my house again.

I think, in keeping with tradition, that the day the book comes out Lori from Los Angeles should be first in line at the bookstore and run home and live-blog as she reads it. It worked really well with the Levi article in Vanity Fair!

#67 sdragon, yep, there must be trouble in paradise when not even tawd would tell her about the boogie. He must be really mad, was probably snickering to himself when she was hamming it up at the photo op, thinking “serves you right, calling me your b*tch, I mean wife”.

http://www.adn.com ADN makes mention of AKM’s point about the use of “rogue” and Troopergate. It’s in a small piece asking when was “going rogue” first used in the world of Palin. It’s on the front page. I forgot to copy the full link. Too tired to go back.

Also, AKM’s Huff Po rogue piece is being rebroadcast quite a bit over on twitter.

@66 Lilybart, I thought the same thing.

Aren’t we already strong, independent and free? Earth to Palin.

What Palin wants is for women to be FREE from having choices. She wants a STRONG “Christian” government that abolishes INDEPENDENT thinking…..it’s her way or the highway.

My handwriting is just awful. It’s gotten progressively worse since high school since I type everything. I’m a touch typist and can type approx. 70 wpm.

I can do calligraphy. It forces me to slow down and really form the letters. But I rarely have my pen with me. Put a ballpoint in my hand and forget it. Even I can decipher what I’ve written after a few hours.

Pencil? Look for all caps. And pretty big too.

I’m not signed up for the forum so can’t PM. I guess I’ll just pass on this. Just as well. No one would be able to make out my signature anyway.

    Professor Geezer Says:

Can we get a few more people to approve the definition of “Going Rogue” on the Urban Dictionary? I know it’s distastefully presented (the definition is sexually explicit). But it needs some more “thumbs up” so that it is continually referenced in regards to Palin’s book title for the next 6 weeks…

    KateinCanada Says:

Sarah quit 75% of the way through her term. Since she finished the book early, perhaps her original contract was for 533 pages.
(But no one can say she stinted on the length of her China speech.)
