The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Open Thread – The Joy of Snail Mail

Long ago, in the days before email, when people wanted to send messages to each other they had to use the U.S. Postal Service.  You know the people that bring you the bills and junk mail?  Them.   It used to be that when you picked up the mail, there was a very real chance that you’d have something in there that was neither a bill, nor an advertisement, but an actual piece of correspondence from a friendly person.

The person who sent the mail used a device called a “pen” which left little ink trails on a piece of paper.  The trails spelled out words, and each person had their own unique “hand writing” which looked nothing like Times New Roman or Arial Condensed.  As a matter of fact, each person’s handwriting was unique and… well… personal!

To celebrate the first anniversary of the Mudflats Forum (the paper anniversary), the fine folks over there have organized a card swap.  This means that if you sign up by this Wednesday, September 30, you can not only send a real card to a fellow Mudflatter, but you’ll actually get one in your very own mailbox!  Yup – ink, paper, stamp, the whole works.

To join in the festivities, you do have to sign up, and you also have to make sure you actually send out your card by October 15th to the Mudflatter who will be eagerly checking the mailbox on the other end.  And when you get your card it will sit in your hand, and you can stick it on the refrigerator, or prop it up on your desk.  You don’t have to click on it, or move it to a folder, and there’s no delete button.  You get to keep it as long as you want.

just a question about the “going rogue” fiasco…
why the rush to get this book out?
i mean we are apparently not getting rid of her so why the push?
now we also hear that its done early and they have moved the publishing date up…how often does that happen?
    why why why???

so many questions and the answers are oh so slow to come out, if they ever do.

Ok, this is an open thread – and here’s an example of why I am in exile.

JOE WILSON is coming to the town where I live today, to meet and greet ‘town hall’ or whatever they call it. (sounds of vomiting)
    THIS ISN’T EVEN HIS DISTRICT!!!!!
I posted on my facebook – ‘Go home Joe! Go rouse your own rabble!’
    I really can’t stand this!!!!!!!

He was in our Okra Strut parade this past Saturday. (Yes, I know–Okra Strut? I am not a native and cannot claim any knowledge as to what in the world it is, or why it’s called that, but you should just SEE the giant sized Mr. Okra balloon that makes it way down the parade route.)

What fun – real mail! And what a really fun idea. Ya gotta love da ‘flats.

And, re: Palin’s really atrocious choice for a book title – There was a humorous moment this morning on one of the national news shows when the anchor announces that “former Governor Sarah Palin’s book is finished and will be available in November and is titled ” ” Going Rouge” I was laughing really hard as it’s taking a moment or two for his ear piece to feed him the correction. He decided he like “rouge” much better than “rogue”. Have to admit – so do I.

As a person who loves to write, I have felt that this generation has really lost the art of writing. Not only generalities such as grammar, spelling, and sentance / paragraph structure; but also in the personal uniqueness of the hand written word. I still tend to write out longhand my draft writing; putting it on the word processor only when ready to send out into the world.

I try to buy beautiful local artwork cards and send them out at least a few times a year with a few words about an interesting happening, or just a simple note saying how much that person means to me. I hope they appreciate the effort. I know I do when I recieve the same, oh so rarely.

Ms. Vincent didn’t reveal any details about the book, but did acknowledge it will describe Ms. Palin’s frustration over her treatment by the staffers she inherited from the McCain campaign after her surprise pick as the GOP vice presidential nominee last year. Ms. Palin was booked on grueling interviews with hostile reporters while talk-show hosts such as Glenn Beck couldn’t even get through to her aides. Mr. Beck tells me he was stunned when he picked up the phone one day just before the election to discover Sarah Palin was on the other end of the line. “She explained that she had been blocked from reaching her audience, so she was now ‘going rogue’ and booking her own interviews,” Mr. Beck told me. “I was thrilled she had burst out of the cage they’d built for her and we were finally talking.”

That incident was the only time Ms. Palin declared her independence from her keepers, and it’s fitting that the title of her upcoming book will be “Going Rogue: An American Life.”

You know that Fox Fake News will be gushing over it and promotint it, so there has to be another response.

    Synopsis

Sarah Palin burst onto the political scene at the height of the 2008 presidential campaign and overnight became a national sensation. Adored by the right, bitterly reviled by the left, she is the most polarizing figure to emerge in American politics in decades. Yet for all the dirt digging and gossip that has surrounded her, very little is actually known about who she is, what she believes, and above all, about her plans for the future. In her new book, Sarah Palin tells the story of her Alaskan upbringing, her marriage and family life, her political career, her religious beliefs, and her meteoric rise to national prominence. With her customary blunt common sense, she sets the record straight about the many myths and lies that have been spun around her and lays out her vision for an America that is strong, independent, and free.

i missed the end of the ebay auction for the charleston “dinner without sarah”.
but i’ve contacted the charity that had it up and asked if i could match the winning bid.
so you would need three other mudpups to join you.

GOP congressman: President Obama an “enemy of humanity” http://bit.ly/ipWSx (video)

Speaking at the conservative “How To Take Back America” conference in St. Louis Missouri on September 26, here’s video of Arizona Republican Congressman Trent Franks saying conservatives “need to realize” President Obama is “an enemy of humanity” who has “no place in any station of government

Arizona folks – would it do any good to send this to your local papers? news outlets ?

All my comments seem to be going into moderation. Check out who Lynn Vincent who is ghostwriting Palin’s book latest collaberation is with. None other than Robert Stacy McCain.

#74 irishgirl, hmm, thanks for the link to the csmonitor article. I also read the comments & for some reason think comment #24 is from sarah or most likely meg stapletongue. A very nasty comment aimed at Celtic Diva.

jc: I didn’t read the comments, I was so shocked to see the link. I’m off now to have a look at them.

Ah yes, I just saw it. When they have to resort to that, then they have no argument. I left a short comment for that reader.

@66 Lilybart, I thought the same thing.

Aren’t we already strong, independent and free? Earth to Palin.

What Palin wants is for women to be FREE from having choices. She wants a STRONG “Christian” government that abolishes INDEPENDENT thinking…..it’s her way or the highway.

My handwriting is just awful. It’s gotten progressively worse since high school since I type everything. I’m a touch typist and can type approx. 70 wpm.

I can do calligraphy. It forces me to slow down and really form the letters. But I rarely have my pen with me. Put a ballpoint in my hand and forget it. Even I can decipher what I’ve written after a few hours.

Pencil? Look for all caps. And pretty big too.

I’m not signed up for the forum so can’t PM. I guess I’ll just pass on this. Just as well. No one would be able to make out my signature anyway.

Can we get a few more people to approve the definition of “Going Rogue” on the Urban Dictionary? I know it’s distastefully presented (the definition is sexually explicit). But it needs some more “thumbs up” so that it is continually referenced in regards to Palin’s book title for the next 6 weeks…

Sarah quit 75% of the way through her term. Since she finished the book early, perhaps her original contract was for 533 pages.
(But no one can say she stinted on the length of her China speech.)
