We remember from the election that you can put lipstick on a pig, but can you put rouge on an elephant?
Maybe, maybe not.
After her bizarre and speedy departure from the governorship of Alaska, Sarah Palin signed up with the lucrative Washington Speakers Bureau, which boasts speakers such as Madeleine Albright, Condaleeza Rice, Tom Brokaw, George W. and Laura Bush, and many others.

Her picture is even featured on the top of the list. But all this positive thinking and “assumptive selling” may not be enough for Palin to get the bookings. An industry insider didn’t mince words with the New York Post.
“The big lecture buyers in the US are paralyzed with fear about booking her, basically because they think she is a blithering idiot.”
“Palin is so uninteresting to so many groups — unless they are interested in moose hunting,” said our insider. “What does she have to say? She can’t even describe what she reads.”
Palin likely quit as governor just months after losing the election as John McCain‘s vice-presidential running mate because of money. “She knew that if she waited until her term ended in 2010, these opportunities would be gone,” said a source. “She would have lost millions by staying in office.”

Well, whether it’s blithering, blathering or blethering, it doesn’t sound good when you’re trying to charge six figures to talk to people for an hour. And I don’t think I need to look up the word idiot to determine that it’s not helping. The multi-million dollar book deal should be enough to keep the larder full, but a speaking career may not be in the cards.
But before the ex-governor loses all hope, she’ll be happy to note that there is a special section that says “Speakers $15K and Under – We have dozens of great speakers for $15,000 or less.” Like the mythical elephant graveyard, maybe the budget speakers corner is where the rouge elephants go when they know their time is drawing near.

There is something wrong with the Washington Speakers Bureau website, which you link in this article. The website heading says “Washington Speakers Bureau – Inspiration from the World’s Greatest Minds.” On the Palin page, shouldn’t the subheading read “Inspiration from the World’s Greatest, In Their Own Minds” ??
I always thought that actions speak louder than words. I do not see $arah doing anything hands on for the troops, special needs, polotics, etc. You would think that she would be volunteering her time or doing something active (Gathering personal things for troops, toothpaste, etc.) Showing that she has an interest in these things. But, no, all she is is talk, blah, blah, blah. I’m for this and I’m for that, she says, where is the action, the proof that these things matter to her?? I guess her supporters just take her word for it and send in their money, the fools. She has no action except to take in the bling by spewing her divisivness and hate and racism.

Here’s what I’m guessing:
Hot commodity. Giant book contract. Big seven figures. Murdoch inspired for whatever reason.
Corporate/motivational speaker fees. Joined that Speakers Bureau that set up the appearance with those folks in Taiwan but now everyone realizes that they over-paid her and over-sold her.
Bad, long, boring , pointless, incredibly long speech , people leaving early and shaking their heads and thinking they will never get back those 90 minutes of their lives performance.
NY Post tells the real story about her inability to sell it.
I think in select markets political candidates will still have her in to raise money and further inflame the rabid base. The base will go crazy and sing her praises. She won’t get paid to appear but her expenses will be covered and she loves the adulation so she’ll be fine with that.
Star begins to fade. The other “leaders” of the Republican party will step forward and take the limelight. She becomes more and more irrelevant.

And she sure didn’t break her neck about the Yukon flooding. She could have been a heroine (spelling? or is that a drug?)
The more I think about this, she could have become a real AK

You know what the best part of her picking “Going Rogue” is? That there will be a TON of her “people” misspelling it without realizing it. They will type “rouge” ad nauseum, because they think it’s the correct way. Guaranteed. And I will laugh at each and every one of them.

I can see Palin cashing in on speeches to group similar to the Indiana group she spoke to a few months ago – folks who are anti-abortion, radically religious, pro-NRA, etc. But at $100K a pop, she’s going to have to lower her price to around that $15K plus expenses in order to be more affordable for those groups, IMHO.

Crabby Patty, I don’t think that that Sarah is going to lower her six-figure price in order to get speaking engagements. It would as if she was put in the bargain basket, oh, the shame. I think that she has such an inflated opinion of her own self-importance that it would be humiliating to have to accept a mere fraction of what she thought she was really worth.
The reviews on her Hong Kong speech were not as favorable as she hoped. If Randy Scheunemann had done a super job, she would still have thousands, all right, hundreds, all right, some speech offers to consider. But nada?
In fact, it is rather strange that Sarah has not had someone write something for her Face Book page, either. Randy’s handiwork was not well received in Hong Kong, and where oh where is a good ghost wrter when a gal needs a Face Book post? So that’s it. All that Sarah has going for her is that book. No wonder they need to get it out there. Maybe someone will ask her to join their book club.
If she really is getting multi-millions on the book deal (50/50 shared with Todd), I can see her taking the 15K per pop for the celebrity factor. But, I wouldn’t be surprised if she started some kind of business… a fashion or cosmetics line, or real estate investment firm… Remember, her idol, is Ivana Trump.

Does anyone know if Palin is scheduled to speak ANYWHERE else in the next few months? If she’s such a hot ticket, you’d think that the “lucky” groups who have booked her would be advertising like crazy and selling tickets right and left?
That Washington Bureau pitch is a disgrace: Advancing the cause of special-needs children? Protect taxpayers from wasteful spending????? What is wasteful is an individual who would accept $100,000 plus to speak to a crowd for 1 hour. Especially, when the person has absolutely nothing to offer, that is worth that kind of money. Bloggers do it for free, because they’re concerned.
Mothers of special needs, retired veterans, speak out, and ask for legislative changes, without payment, or salary. The pitch also says she’s a voice for principles and reform. Alaskan commenters, and American, international commenters do it for FREE, Sarah. Taxpayers don’t get paid to talk about reform, or stand up for their perplexed relatives who desperately need health care reform for a fee.
The entitlement worth that this woman possesses is sick. And, just because others do it, doesn’t mean it’s ok. I think the wool is being pulled away from our eyes lately, and we see the spending waste, and the elitists who get paid outrageous amounts of money to feed their egos.

Everything she does is for show, not from the heart. There are millions of people who give their lives, their time, their energy to help these children. They do so quietly and do not seek praise for their actions. She is disgusting.
As someone who has a special needs child in the family, I really resent Palin taking credit for “advancing the cause of special needs children” when she laughed about money “wasted” on fruit fly research which is used to help children born with special needs.

However,
Big shindigs book big speakers years in advance, Sarah might pick up a major site if somebody cancels and all the other major speakers are busy that night. The longer she is out of the spot light the sooner she will lose her luster. Be patient, keep your fingers crossed. If she doesn’t get some major gigs pretty soon….
The book debut will help for a couple of months, after that its the 2010 buy-election year, she’ll make some fiery speeches and a bunch more enemies. Then a year of 2011 and what will she do for a year to keep in the public’s eye?

I also went to the Washington Speakers Bureau site tonight. Was curious about our dear Sarah and how her speaking career was going. They have 14 major categories of speeched listed…everything from World Affairs to Sports. There was also a list of the most popular speakers in each category and SP’s name was not on any of the lists…surpirse, surprise, surprise.
Of course, the wingnuts have already made SP’s book a number one best seller in record time. Gonna have to live with that for awhile, I guess. It doesn’t seem to me that 400 pages is a lot to encompass all things Palin. Wonder if it will include her tweets?
@54 Katie – I think the book is $24.95 each. 1.5 million (sold out). Latest I read is 7 million advance to Palin. Who knows the cost of printing, distribution, and advertising… That may leave 20 million for profits or… more royalites to Palin? According to Alaska divorce laws, if Palins split, Todd would get half of her income.

I’ve been waiting for the shoe to drop on Sarah for a long, long time. I can disagree with a politician, but her hate really dug deep. There’s a reason why, all across the board, she’s considered “polarizing.”
So I’ve been picturing her fall in the exact same way (here’s the inner nerd coming forth) I picture Barad Dur falling: collapsing like a strong-seeming but thinly propped-up structure with her at the top freaking out. Dramatic music plays as it collapses while the “good guys” (we free people) cheer… I thought it would come with her financial records exposing fraud being released, or prosecution caused by her many ethics violations. Some single big dramatic event, at any rate.
But it’s really happening like the book, not like the movie. In the book, there wasn’t any huge drama. Barad Dur wasn’t even visible from the Black Gates. Rather, Sauron* didn’t instantly wink out (wink! Ha!). Instead, he was just reduced to a powerless, evil shadow for all time…
It’s looking more like that every day.
In this regard, hopefully, as goes Sarah, so goes the Far Right…
* I know it sounds hyperbolic to compare Sarah to Sauron, but remember she WAS the VP candidate on the heels of a VP who said he wasn’t part of the executive branch, and she said the VP could get into Congress to “stir things up”, and she was a 72-year-old’s heartbeat away from the Big Chair.
I’m still holding out for Cheney’s collapse to be closer to the movie rather than the book, though. We had multiple Saurons…

Big margins, big print, photoshopped pix … they had to get it out in a hurry cause there is no THERE there. If you remember, she got the book deal and then quit. At that point the deal was worth half what it was and going south. It’s hard to promote a quitter with no track record.
Her problem is she has absolutely No political capital and limited connections. Because of that and her other failures (can’t be bothered to learn, can’t take direction, doesn’t work well with others, has no vision, loose notion of truth, compulsive grifting) she hasn’t a chance of putting together a viable political campaign. Besides … Sarah hates to work.
I followed this link on Gryphen’s site and it is very telling and interesting. It is an interview with Amanda Coyne who was supposed to write Sarah’s first biography and she bailed once she got to know her. It is dated 10/08 but still current and relevant. The first ghost writer didn’t want any part of it. Check it out.

She’s looking for a new place to grift.
At the age of 45; Sarah should know that in order to talk, intelligently, about a subject you need to have researched it, learned it (by hands on) or at least been closely associated with it and actively, involved.
Her theory is for someone to write her speech and she just delivers it for a 6 figure salary. She can’t speak about it or discuss it because she doesn’t know and understand the subject. She has a special needs child and probably can’t explain the care. She carries a picture of her son; who was/is in the service and she thinks that this constitutes her as a Military expert.
The problem that occurred, when she ran for VP, is still there. She can’t talk to anyone outside her tight circle. She has her name on the Washington Bureau to speak; but you can’t ask questions??? and the media is excluded?? But still give me 1/2 a million?
Her book is out early, probably because she refused advise on the material. Alot of things she couldn’t speak about because it would land her in jail. Therefore, she had very little left to say. Her life has been entangled in a bunch of lies, deceit, betrayal, wacky religion and shady politics. She is irrelevant and a lose soul.
Rachel Maddow’s Kent Jones did a segment on palin’s ghostwriter, Lynn Vincent (you guys probably saw it and it was probably already mentioned)…but that ghostwriter has quite a history of writing ‘conservative, fundamentalist”, twisted-thinking, religious views and 1950′s mentality on just about everything! Like Kent said “kinda scary”.

The only good reason I can think of to buy the book is to leave a review on amazon.com. Maybe a lot of honest assessments of the dishonesty of the book would help kill it. But, not everyone should have to buy the book. Maybe it can be passed around with the agreement that every reader will post a review on amazon.
When figuring the “take” don’t forget that there is the wholesale price and the retail price and the only price that goes back to Sarah and the publisher is the wholesale price — whatever that may be.
I wonder if anyone has explained to Sarah how the publishing industry works. If her book doesn’t sell enough copies to cover the mutli-million dollar advance she received, she has to pay it back.
So even though the potential exits for huge earnings, if the public decides they’re not interested in spending their hard earned dollars on anything Palin, (and why should we, when she’s already so entertaining for free?) then she could be forced to come up with a million or two when her publisher demands that she repay the advance.
Let’s hope that her books gather dust at Barnes & Noble, producers decide to pass on the “Sarah Palin Story,” and all those groups willing to pay big bucks for an after dinner speaker say “Thanks, but no thanks” to booking the Outspoken Former Governor of Alaksa.
Considering how much the Palins can drop on clothes in the course of a weekend, I’d imagine that seven million would disappear in no time. When the publisher knocks at the door wanting it all back, they’ll be in worse shape than before she quit.
She might even have to go out and find a real job.
I think we all need to do a bit of research this weekend and see if ANYONE, ANY WHERE is advertising that Sarah Palin is speaking to their group. Supposedly, Palin’s speaking calendar is FULL (i.e. Meg’s statement that there have been 1,000′s of requests) and some of the nuttier HuffPo posters are stating that Palin has 5 months of speaking engagements.
If a group or entity is large enough to foot Palin’s speaking fees, one could assume they would either be selling tickets or advertising that speech! If you get a chance, do a few searches and see if you come up with anything. Thanks!

Right around the time her book actually hits the street, look for Palin to come out with another outrageous statement about President Obama, designed to resonate with whatever is the biggest topic of the day (Afghanistan, or health care if that is still in progress, etc).
Palin will be managed in order to keep her profile up at the level necessary for book sales and for speaker’s fees. Her China speech was a far away, under-the-radar trial run, and you can bet she will be repackaged and fine-tuned and re-marketed into whatever will generate speaking engagements and produce the $$$. There is far too much income potential for anyone to allow her to fade away…
She is going to make money – and lots of it. I don’t care about that. I do care about the continuing damage she will be doing to our political discourse as she joins Beck and Hannity et al, raising the volume on hatred for personal gain.

It’s fine that her book has shot up to a “best seller”. Once everyone reads it – that will change. Mind you, a great many of her followers don’t read. So maybe it will become the prop of choice amongst the GOP Base for wobbly tables.
It’s also fine that she’s booked herself with a fancy Washington lecture circuit organization. The better to remind her of this when she claims she is not a Washington insider.
She can keep yapping for all I care – it just proves over and over and over her lack of credibility.
Plus – no sane person in this country or around the world actually BELIEVES Palin wrote that book herself. If it’s got actual coherent sentences – it will be a dead giveaway. Can’t wait for Rachel Maddow tonight! =D

On Hardball in the last few days a dem & repub were debating about sarah

I don’t buy it. If Palin had over a 1,000 requests and only accepted half of them, she would be booked for 10 years (that’s if she could do one a week–every week). If she could manage two engagements a week, she would be booked for the next 5 years.
I also think that many politicians don’t want her help. She is too polarizing and raises a lot of money for the opposition.
Interesting that before the book is even out, Amazon is discounting the hardback version by 46 percent. Somebody’s not going to make the big bucks on this one tht they were hoping for, I suspect.

What really stuck with me was in reading the “pitch on the site”. If you were didn’t know who who the speaker was…….well after reading the pitch you might think “wow, that sounds like someone really inspiring. All the things she is going to present…..wow!” You might even picture in your mind what such a person would be like. But then when you found out it was SP……..it would totally be a let down………..a rip off! The exact opposite of who you were picturing in your mind.

Interesting – but then where is the publicity about all this? If she is speaking ANYWHERE, it’s sure been a well-kept secret. And then has been NO word about her appearing for any politican.
I want the specifics on her health care plan. What kind of insurance does she have? What does she want for Trig when he gets too old to be included in her family insurance plan? She must give these things some thought, let’s hear what she has to say.
I’m starting to feel sorry for all those elderly people giving away what little they can afford to Sarapac. Not only is she making big money with her book and screeching tours, she is still taking their money . When will she tell them she is looking into a beauty product endorsement? They give and give and she keeps taking and taking. She has more politician in her than we thought.
