Thanks to everyone for all your nice words about my appearance on The Rachel Maddow Show. You guys are the best. It was quite a day. I was definitely nervous as this was my first TV appearance. But, the staff of TRMS was terrific and Rachel herself is so warm and friendly that it was a great experience. I’ve admired her for a long time, and felt incredibly honored to be asked to be a guest on her show. When I had the good fortune to meet her in New York last month, and she told me she was a Mudflatter, I was completely speechless….a condition which, fortunately, did not repeat itself tonight!
And thanks are definitely in order to Shannyn Moore who stuck around the studio after her appearance on Countdown to make sure everything ran smoothly and to offer moral support. It was very much appreciated.

A couple things I’ve wondered about, same with Shannyn:
- We can see that Rachel sees you on the screen in front of her, but can YOU see Rachel? Can you hear/watch what she’s just said on the show? Or are you just relying on some little time delayed earwig in your ear? It’s very short delay, so it’s not unappealing, seems very natural given that it’s all the way to Alaska.
- Do they flash a bunch of light at your face? You didn’t seem to squint, but they seem to get lovely lighting so that we can see you very well.
Anyway, nicely done! You & Shannyn are natural born pros and the cameras love you!
I can’t see anything but a camera lens. Little thingy in ear with a box in my lap to control volume. Lots of lights. I was (and am) getting over the flu, so I was definitely a little puffy and my voice was different than usual. AKM

Ok, is it just me or does anyone else see a tv “news talk show” waiting to happen when looking at Shannyn and AKM. Interesting guests, REAL issues, great rapport, clever banter. Start off locally in AK, put the shows directly on you tube, get them moving through the interwebby tubes. Now that you’ve got some cred behind both of you , you’d have no problem getting advertisers. Call out the 5 nasty dems. Put a floodlight on Palin. Take on Beck.

It’s reassuring that you and others are keeping the light shining on SP’s lies, ineptitude and considerable failings as a human being. You are ensuring she will never hold public office and wield power over others again as she did as Gov. She’s reduced to being just celebrity, which she loves and the rest of us can safely tolerate.
I’m amused at the notion of her book, however. Her base, the uniformed and intellectually incurious, aren’t very likely READERS, lol. Ane the rest of us aren’t likely to shell out any money to read her nonsense.

Shaffer’s book will be considerably more interesting than Palin’s cause Paul hung out with some great folks including Gilda Radner…..and he was in Spinal Tap – ‘nuf said, there, also.
AKM, I stayed up late to watch the second run of Rachael, and when I went to bed I kept seeing both your’s and Shannyn’s faces. What I couldn’t get out of my mind was the pure honesty and confidence I saw in both of your faces, especially the eyes . This in contrast to the sheer evil I see in Sarah’s face anytime I see her. It is clear you two show us goodness to counter her evil. I just hope that over time more and more people will come to see the horror of Sarah Palin. She scares the bejeezus out of me. You two help calm me. Keep up the good work and keep showing it to us.

I gota tell you Mudbug the Republican Party that is speaking now scares the you know what out of me. They may not represent the majority of conservatives, and I know they don’t represent the majority of Christinas, but they are running that show and it is ugly, ugly, ugly and growing more so every day.

Is there someone we know who might measure up? Someone who we now know can hold her own on video? Or, in fact, who could show those folks in DC a thing or two? All while writing from Alaska in her pajamas? I wonder.
My husband has heard so much about the Mudflats and both AKM and Shannyn, so he decided to put faces to names last evening, and watched the shows with me.
His comments were pretty much the same as everyone’s on here.
1. Both – “VERY PRETTY YOUNG LADIES!” (glad he’s an old codger!).
2. Would never know that AKM had not done television before.
3. The thing that I found right-on-the-money was when he pointed out that both ladies were polite and not snarky about Palin and simply stuck to the facts without the drama and innuendo that so many others (particularly politicians) indulge in and show obvious bias – these ladies did not do that and came across as the Best of the Best.

You hid your nervousness completely and your appearance was smooth as well as professional.
As much as I admire Shannyn, she has appeared nervous (understandably) many times on Countdown.
Although this was your one and only appearance thus far, you were more engaging than Shannyn as well.
It always seems like Shannyn is not saying everything she could and that they are trying to draw it out of her.
While Shannyn’s venue is radio, yours appears to be TV. (as well as blogging of course).
I hate comparing you two, but it is impossible not to.
You are both sincere and have the interest of Alaskans at heart, which definitely comes across in your respective appearences.
I’m sure it surprises a few folks.
Palin’s rise to power, had them assume Alaskan women must be dunderheads, if she was the best they had to offer.
This is my honest, humble opinion.

Watched my two favorite ladies on my two favorite shows. It is such a blessing to hear rational people after a day of hearing what the Repigs., Bible Spice and all the other loons out there have to say. Beauty and brains, what a combo, what a pair.
I do have to say that Shannyn looked like she could break out in laughter at any moment. It must be very difficult not to break out in crzy laughter when speaking about Buttercup. She would be funny if she were not so patethic.

Watched the DVR of Rachel Maddow Show this morning and was quite impressed with your performance. Yeah you! Yeah us! With your charming, calm, articulate, and intelligent demeanor, not to mention your very lovely face, I think you lend even more credibilty to your blog by making public appearances. So often, Palin fans have nastily described Palin critics as unattractive, crazy, and jealous. You, in person, turn the joke on them. Maybe some of those less-hardened Palin fans will actually realize that you, not Palin, are more like the friend they imagine. Looking forward to seeing you again!

If no one wants her for speechs, how are they going to do a big book tour? After she appears on every program on Fox, maybe some religious channel, that will be it.

Hello to a fellow misfit in Texas! I’m not taking anything Politico says too seriously. They are pumping it a bit too hard. Besides, why did Palin rank so low in the recent Value Voters straw poll? There’s also a Newser article that is a bit too saccharine for me to swallow. There, I think the writer is just trying to attract attention and separate himself from the herd of plain ol’ wisdom (conventional and otherwise).

I was unable to watch the appearances last night at home so have just now seen the clips. But while reading about them last night, I was so proud … and so grateful. Words fail me … my gratitude is enormous. Thank you. The two of you are lovely and wonderful to read and to listen to. My son (age 34) who lives with us is an active blogger on Daily Kos for one, and other blogs I am sure. He heard my excitement and emotion last night and even though he does not frequent Mudflats or my other Alaskan blogs, I think he was impressed that “my bloggers” were on MSNBC! Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Desert. Thanks. I’ m not alone in this way of thinking. There are many of us who think the party has been hijacked by bible pounding idiots. They set the new rules on who is the right brand of Christian to be able to run etc. I love good debate and BALANCE. But right now, the teetertotter on the far right ain’t working.
Shanny and Mudflats needs to do a big book of say, 401 pages in smaller font outlining who this woman REALLY is. I just want her gonzo.
I’m not sure I’m buying what Politico is trying to sell—–Palin’s popularity.
If Palin has over a 1,000 offers to speak (as her team suggested), why is her speaking bureau advertising for her? It would take some time to work through 1,000 speaking engagements before you needed to advertise to get more speaking engagements. Even if she only accepted half, and did one speaking engagment a week, that’s 500 weeks or 10 years. If she could manage two a week, that’s 5 years of engagements. Someone isn’t telling the truth.
Regarding those in the GOP who would jump at the chance of having Palin headline? I’m not so sure about that either. It seems that she is so divisive that she splits the GOP, and she blew off the Republican women in California and was just doing a little GOP bashing in China. Any “thinking” Republican’s can’t stand her. I know many of them.
Wasn’t she just left out of the GOP women’s calendar? If she is so popular, why wasn’t she Miss July (quittin’ month)?
Plus, she is a great fundraiser……..for the opposition. I can’t wait to see who she will headline for in the GOP, because I am sending money to the Democrat candidate.

I’ve had a different experience than the poster at 8:09 a.m. I’m starting to hear some of my staunch republican friends saying negative things about Palin…like she’s crazy, unfit for office of any kind because she quit mid term, and she has lied about key issues (death panels). I have a lot of family (including husband) and business associates who are Republicans and they can’t stand Palin. Sure, she gets the GOP base all worked up, but the educated, Wall Street, Homeland security, CEO, corporate America Republicans know that is not qualified and think she is an idiot.
These highly educated leaders know she is a joke. Why would they vote for someone to be President if they wouldn’t even hire her to work in their company. Quitting her job may speak the the knuckle draggers of the GOP, but doesn’t look good on her resume for the Corporate America GOP.
Stanley Krute @83 – I’m partially in agreement with you Stan. I think we will see her running for POTUS in 2012, but I think it more likely she will be as a 3rd party candidate.
With Murdoch’s money and his desire to be the puppet master of American politics, they would have a strong chance – maybe wouldn’t win but could certainly throw the voting numbers into a tizzy where we might see the Supreme Court intervening to determine who the winner actually is.
It wouldn’t make any difference what party Palin ran with, her hardcore fan base would go with her to the ends of Hell.
As for Murdoch, he’s been buying influence and power around the world for years, and now that he’s getting along in years, he is probably more determined than ever to achieve his ultimate goal.

Huckabee draws from the same Dobson “Christian base” pool, and even served ten years as a Gov.

No way is Palin running. Much of the base would like to think so, but the GOP is not going to let it happen, and Palin doesn’t really want the work anyway.
She will be useful to the party as a fundraiser and attack dog – which will give her the part of this that she loves the most (next to the money): adulation.
I think the party will be careful not to signal too strongly, or too early, that Palin is not going to be the candidate. They don’t want to turn off the base…or turn off the donations!

I know what you mean about your emotions kicking in. Physically, I nearly broke my neck rushing down the stairs this morning to watch it. Then as I sat and listened to Rachel say that she was a mudflatter, and watched as AKM came on and spoke, I must say I had a lump in my throat. I felt so incredibly proud of AKM.
Today, I am trying to analyse why I feel so proud of a woman in Alaska. I truly believe that AKM literally saved the world….maybe I am being a bit melodramatic…but I think you all get my drift!
AKM’s ability to speak candidly about what was happening in Alaska in a non-biased but extremely humourous way was an absolute delight to read.
However, her blog wouldn’t have been a success without participation from all the commenters in the US and all over the world.
What I think I am trying to say is…we all feel so proud to have participated in your blog AKM…I don’t know what anyone else feels, but just the fact that we have participated along with you…it makes us all feel a little special too. We have all had a part in it….maybe a little slice in history?

Lori I am with you on that. Sarah Palin lost my respect when I read about Monegan. Sarah Palin is mean, and spiteful. I have no respect for her. Also calling Levi’s mom white trash, was chilling. Thanks, Irish, for saying so well what a lot of us are feeling! I felt special too, when AKM was on, as if a member of my family had just hit the big time! I was nervous for her, then proud of her, like I used to be while watching my daughters on stage at school.
And I am proud of us all, as a group, for advancing a better way of discussing politics that avoids threats and name-calling and ridiculous exaggeration for the most part. I am SO HAPPY that the transition for AKM from anonymity to a national TV appearance has been coming along safely and smoothly as far as I can tell. I live right here in Anchorage, yet had never heard of The Mudflats until her name came out courtesy of Mike Doogan. That was not for him to do, but it has opened things up in a good way now. I read the blog most every day since I first looked at it, and I’ve also gotten familiar with other local blogs that are linked to on this blog. It felt good to see AKM on TRMS, and I hope it is a liberating feeling for her to have accomplished that. It feels more honest and right to have her completely “out” and shows she is sincere and cares enough to stick with the facts and stand behind what she says, without the need to hide in any way. I’m really happy and proud of your efforts, AKM, and look forward to seeing more of your presence in more and more ways, if it suits you and your family.

It’s critical that the House pass the strongest public option possible, not just because it’s good policy. It will also give House leaders important extra leverage when House and Senate bills are merged during conference committee before a final bill gets a full vote.

I was very young then and wasn’t aware of the political climate before the assassination. According the article the hate was thick enough to cut in Dallas.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that this isn’t the first time wingnuts have become unhinged to this level, but see what happened the last time they were whipped up like this. I think people like AKM and Shannyn have contributed in keeping people aware of how dangerous palin is but there’s a lot more work to be done. I’ll always be grateful for Katie Couric & Tina Fey’s contribution in keeping the monster in check also.
Molly we do have a accent I always said we did not until Ilistened to myself and someone from california and boy could you hera the differance. Justspeaking to each other it was not noticable,at least not to me but when listening on tape it was very distinctive .I will never for get some one from outside saying the name Waukesha Wa ke sha I had a good laugh at that one
Haven’t seen either show yet but the picture that was put up shows two beautiful ,smart women and from the comments made both know how to be held accountable in a public forum(TV)I have seen Shannyn before and it was really special to have a face to put to the name AKM.

jojobo1 – Was that Waukesha, Wisconsin you were talking about? Thirty plus years ago when I lived in northern Illinios, my then husband and I used to go with friends to their lake house up there. I remember the husband of that couple drove on the ice and it scared me because I was sure the car would fall through. (Here is NH, every winter there’s at least one ice fisherman’s truck that goes through the ice.)
Always good to see Shannyn on Countdown, but to see AKM on Rachel was the bomb! I was beaming with mudpuppy pride.
I tried to post a comment this morning, but it apparently got pulled over to the spam file or something, because it never got posted. I don’t know if there are certain words that flag a post or something? Anyway, I had said that I was glad that AKM is slowly but surely coming out of anonymity into full recognition, and is was really great to see her last evening on TRMS. It’s also fun to see pictures of her and Shannon posted on both of their blogs, too. It does have a big happy extended family feel to it all to read all the supportive comments and to feel the same way.

Molly, somewhere I heard that we in the West speak standard American, ie: some power that be decided ours was the accent that the media would use. I do pronounce Wisconsin correctly–it comes from having most of my family from the state. I remember one national candidate coming to visit Portland and saying he was so glad to be in the great state of Ore-ee-gone, which since it is pronounced Or-i-gun, immediately told one and all his staff hadn’t even bothered to look up the way the natives said it. I, too, enjoy regional accents.

I’m from Wisconsin and found your site last year and was hooked with your witty, sarcastic pieces which cracked me up. If this is ” Al Jazerra “… it was sort of interesting that they felt that the readers of that newspaper thought this subject was relevant or important to their readers somehow. Did you know you are writing for the Arabic countries??

honestyinGov, I had a look at the website and didn’t see any reference to Al Jazeera – which, btw, is a very highly-regarded international news service – and not a bunch of radical ratbags.
I’ve had similar things happen to me on my own blog: a really obscure site (whose purpose isn’t clear) will highlight your blog one time. It seemed to me that it was just a random, computer-driven thing – and nothing personal.

I agree with you about Al Jazeera. It has good reporting and is very respected in the business and pretty much has just the facts. I wasn’t trying to imply it in a negative way because they have a very good reputation. It was just sort of unique the way an English written story was posted right in the middle of their page.

I have quite a few Australian, American and English friends who’ve worked in the Middle East (mainly in oil) and I have an Indian friend in Bahrain who is a receptionist; the local women aren’t allowed to work alongside men, and there are many, many Indian men doing the drudge work in offices that women usually do elsewhere.
As well, nurses are traditionally foreigners in the Middle East, except for midwives (self-explanatory).
That makes for a helluva large English-speaking population.
Both interviews rocked!! Keep the real news coming…Going Rogue is going to be such a snow job (pardon the pun, there in Alaska), but many are going to read and believe it. You and Shannyn are the ones shouting truth to power. Don’t stop.

granny@95: Disagree Re: 3rd party. Her puppeteers are quite practical, and understand the difficulties of 3rd party campaigns in the US. The GOP nomination will be relatively easy for her to get, and the advantages of owning the party apparatus are large.
Professor Geezer@108: Sarah has a feral intelligence. She understands, as did Dean and Obama, that it doesn’t matter what the established media and power figures say/do. The ‘net provides all sorts of route-arounds. The title of her book, her quitting the Gov.-ship, her ability to feed off the hate in her rallies: it all points out the road she’ll be happily travelling.
I live and hang out amongst her base. Folks who consistently underestimate her power, I’d aver, don’t.

There I was, on my 63 birthday in a motel deep in the heart of SOUTH CAROLINA (shudder). I had not been able to find NPR south of Virginia on the way down and even with the radio on scan had received an overdose of Right Wing Christian pap. On a pit stop I overheard a woman say that “that Argentinian hussy” was to blame for the Govenor’s fall from grace. How on earth was I going to stop my slide into depression? Turn on MSNBC for a dose of sanity was the decision. Oh! Great! Shannyn is on Countdown. I immediately perked up. I decided to leave the TV on while sleeping off the 10 hour drive. Much tossing and turning later what did my tired ears here? Mudflats! Mudflats is here! I am an ardent follower! Wooohoooo….sit up and put on your glasses Tante cause this is gonna be “cherce”. Very well done. Congratulations.
