I personally hate that people are using nazi all over the place and I disagree with using the term Holocaust, for the same reasons. NOTHING compares to the atrocities of the Holocaust.

“A holocaust” is any event in which people are killed, it usually involves fire. “The holocaust” is the specific event that happened due to Nazi genocide against the Jewish population and others. It really irks me people can’t understand that. Grayson Is a man of courage. I am irriatate with Rachel Maddow for making the statement the word should never be used.

Holocaust was small ‘h’ in his comment. It is a real word, with a real generic meaning, and nothing in what he said suggested any comparison to the capital ‘H” Holocaust.

The word is evocative. It is chosen for a reason; to evoke a distaste. Just like nazi. It’s not the word that’s offensive, it’s what it has come to represent. It is used on purpose, not for its definition in Webster’s.

Furthermore, the fires in California have been rightly referred to as holocausts. The word has not been reserved specifically for WWII atrocities.

One topic which irritated me from this past week was the berating Obama took regarding the Military advice he is supposed to defer to when it comes to strategy on Afghanistan. I know that the longer the President deliberates on strategy the less decisive he appears, but the military is not what determines how we go about developing foreign policy after the last occupant of that office. I recall when President Truman had to fire General McArthur when he was starting to be insubordinate. I only wish Obama could somehow demote all these right wing blowhards who seem to be steering from the back of the bus.

Grayson specifically said “this holocaust” in reference to people dying without healthcare benefits. The discussion of his use of the word is simply to distract from his message. Don’t let that work – healthcare for all is the important issue.

Just my opinion, but I think the word has become about THE Holocaust. It isn’t that it is right or wrong to use it, but maybe less a provocative word could be used. I agree with Shannyn, it distracts..

I hadn’t heard that Grayson used it till Shannyn said it on air. I also did not know of Rachel’s reaction, as I do not have cable. My disgust with it was in real time. It doesn’t fit. Find another word, until everyone is consumed by fire because they don’t have healthcare. *dons a wetsuit as I don’t have healthcare!*
Using holocaust may have been a poor choice of words but I think we’re so used to the wingnuts picking up on words taken out of context and making big scare threats out of them, that we may be starting to do the same thing with our own folks. Let’s not please. Grayson is my hero!

I am not a conspiracy theorist. I believe it’s a growing pain, or a serious technical malfunction, one resolved with better hardware and/or software. Interrupted streaming occurred on Mike Method’s show months ago. This is nothing new but it can’t go on for obvious reasons.

Somehow I don’t think there would be any less controversy about wordage if Grayson had said “the mass murder of uninsured people”. Perhaps “the intentional mass murder….” as this is a known problem and Congress has yet to address it in a meaningful way.
Oh, and he forgot the insured whose claims are denied. Perhaps “the intentional mass murder of people by withholding medical care” is more accurate? Again, people should be paying attention to this serious problem rather than how one words it.

I didn’t hear how Grayson used the word, but I’m guessing that he meant it was a catastrophe of epic proportions affecting everyone, thus the metaphor. Judging by how distracted everyone here is by the word, I would say that a different word would be a better choice.

It’s not just fishy. When I lost the stream, I also got booted off the tubes, had to re-enter all my passwords everywhere and felt like it was definitely intertube virus related or malicious. It’s probably not Reeshman’s issue at all. Thought I trust him to fix it the best he can

I log in sometimes during the week when Ingraham, Hannity, Levin, Eddie Burke, et al… are broadcasting and there’s almost NEVER a problem with the stream when they’re on the air! VERY VERY FISHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WakeUpAmerica, I heard Grayson’s comment and there was no particular emphasis on the word, so I agree with you.
As a second generation descendant in a family directly impacted by THE Holocaust, I didn’t have any antenna perk up during Grayson’s apology.
and I also agree with sauerkraut…all this puffing and posturing about the word is grasping at straws because Grayson spoke the TRUTH about the Republican healthcare plan.
Could Grayson have used another term than holocaust? He could have, but he didn’t, and truth be told, we do not know his personal background. It could be just like mine.
Let’s not bash Rachel too badly. Had it been a Republican who used the term, she would have tried for clarification as well, and had she NOT tackled Grayson on his using it, she would have been pilloried by other networks for not questioning him.
I agree that it seemed to overshadow the good points that Grayson was making, but that was just a few minutes out of an otherways good segment, and resulting publicity on other media has been positive and there hasn’t been much dwelling on his using the word holocaust.
I think the righties are too upset that some freshman DARED to stand up to them and tell the truth. They knew they had better drop their demand for an apology or disciplinary action, as soon after they issued their demand, Rachel and other media were reporting on the Republicans like Virginia Foxx, etc. who had actually used similar terms against the Democrats.
Grayson could have used other terminology and *played it safe*, but he obviously isn’t going to play anything safe if it means he isn’t getting his message/viewpoint out. He is a wealthy man so isn’t dependent on corporate campaign backing. Bottom line, he is a good and honest man who got into politics for all the right reasons.

Grayson is Jewish. Disputes on semantics shouldn’t be used as smoke and mirrors to hide the real issues. That and greed is how we got into this health care crisis in the first place.

The fact that Grayson articulated how he preferred the possibility of saving lives to being re-elected cancels out noise of his wording, or hyperbole. A better choice of words would have been “Manslaughter”. Any way one looks at it it’s a crime.
The right have been using this crap all year. They’ll manipulate it anyway they can gain any advantage.
I only wish we had more people in congress with a stepped up notion of importance, a Kamikaze attitude towards their service. (Oh no, I’ve used that terminology wrong. I just feel it.)

Phone calls don’t have to be irate. If the manager knows we are not happy that we can’t listen to the show he may make a decison to change something. Most businesses appreciate feedback from consumers about problems. It also seems to be due to popularity of Shannyn’s show. I am sure they want to accomodate as many listeners as they can.

AKjah – at the start of the show I could get to this thread from Internet Explorer but not Firefox (I usually use Firefox). Now I am back on Firefox but there is no stream for the show. Go figure.

I could not get the show at all on line. I can get anything i want outside of Alaska. Lately i have been having a hardtime with in state bloggers. I know the radio station can only handle so much. The other sites are what i am questioning. Has anyone noticed a problem with Alaska based sites?

Personally I don’t believe he should have to apologize, I don’t think the word “holocaust” is only limited to Jewish people & WWII. I LIKED Grayson’s responses to Rachel M., trying to get the train back on the track while she was obsessing 3 times – like the only thing he had accomplished was that ‘one single word’. 1st time I’ve ever been disappointed by RM. But, at least Grayson has made his apology now and may be able to get the discussion back to healthcare.

Burke says he never told his listeners to threaten the women. He is backed up by his boss, Justin McDonald.

And even though Eddie Burke did not tell his listeners to make threatening calls, according to Anchorage Police Department Lt. Paul Honeman, Burke did instigate the harassment.
Burke is not facing any type of punishment at this point.
I suspect KBYR’s Justin McDonald is part of the problem and not part of the solution. The station’s equipment is antique compared to modern technology and I doubt he realizes the importance of internet listeners.
