Open Thread – Autumn Colors

autumn

Some of the most interesting autumn foliage around here is found underfoot in the form of lichens and mosses and small alpine plants.

Just beautiful! I can’t believe I was away from Mudflats for 5 months or more. In the last couple of weeks I have grown accustomed to checking each morning for another beautiful image from Alaska. The horror of today’s politics brought me back here to find thoughts from like-minded progressives – but the open thread photos are truly a balm for the spirit.
    Thank you, AKM!

I love this image, Akm. At first, I thought the stone(?) was a waterfall, and the orange-red leaves were whole trees. But then the coffee kicked in. :)

Have been off line for a while while tending to BF’s family (mom in hospital, dad needing babysitting services 24/7).

    What did I miss?

Probably already discussed, but thought I’d add my 2-cents on Letterman: He’s a comedian… a late night talk show host. He isn’t an elected official, we don’t have all the details, and it should be handled in privacy. It’s really none of our business at all.

I kind of suspected the thing with Stephanie, but never took that real far in my gut. Regardless, he doesn’t get paid to represent us, pass policy, or vote on law. Therefore, his indiscretions or simply consenting adult behavior shouldn’t be scrutinized.

JMHO on what I saw first on the news this morning.

The thing that I like about David Letterman is that he is willing to poke fun at himself. He started to tell one of those jokes about people in high office who cheat, naming Gov. Sanford, Gov. Spitzer and each time he caught himself and let the audience have another good laugh at his expense.

Texas Lawmakers Who Voted Against The Recovery Act Now Beg For Stimulus Funds For NASA

Every single Republican in the House voted against the $819 billion Recovery Act in January. Among the Republican senators who voted against the stimulus were Texas:

Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn.

Both of them complained that they wanted to see more tax cuts rather than government spending.

But now, both Hutchison and Cornyn are pressuring the Obama administration to give Texas $3 billion in stimulus funds.

The co-signers on the letter are a bipartisan group of the Texas delegation in the House, including 19 Republicans, all of whom also voted against the funds for which they’re now begging.

The letter was drafted and circulated by GOP Rep. Pete Olson.

    Over at HP’s coverage ( http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/06/texas-gop-lawmakers-who-v_n_311033.html ) , a poster named GoMonkey Go (a 12:23PM post) had a great ‘aha gotcha’ proposal:
“Give it to them! Let the big babies have their monies…only if they come to a big photo-op ceremony with the President where he personally hands them a giant check with the words “STIMULUS MONEY FOR TEXAS REQUESTED BY TEXAS GOP SENATORS” in huge letters on the Memo line.

That can be played in every ad against them next election.

I amended it to the following:

Give it to them! Let the big babies have their monies…only if they come to a big photo-op ceremony with the President where he personally hands them a giant check with the words “STIMULUS MONEY FOR TEXAS REQUESTED BY TEXAS GOP SENATORS…AFTER THEY VOTED AGAINST THE STIMULUS PACKAGE WHEN IT WAS ORIGINALLY PROPOSED!”

Great news today in our campaign against Glenn Beck. We’re announcing that nineteen more of Beck’s advertisers have stopped supporting his show.

    ***snip***

Here’s the full list of new companies ditching Beck: AmMed Direct, Citrix Online, Concord Music Group, Diageo, Eggland’s Best, Equifax, Eulactol USA (producer of Flexitol), GetARoom.com, Hoffman La Roche (maker of BONIVA), Metropolitan Talent Management, ooVoo, Overture Films, Scarguard, Schiff Nutrition (maker of Tiger’s Milk and Fi-Bar), Seoul Metropolitan Government, Subaru, Toyota-Lexus, Waitrose and Woodland Power Products, Inc.

Couple more heavy advertisers (Subaru/Toyota-Lexus) had been added. Think the list is now up to around 80 or 90 droppees…

On Dave: What we also have to consider with Dave is that these affairs happened years and years ago. While I wouldn’t choose an affair with the Big Boss, it could seem inevitable that folks who spend SO much time together (leaving little time to anything else) would find romance at the office.

On Jay Leno’s last night at the Tonight Show, he announced that his “legacy” was going to be the children born of the show. He pointed out all the staff members who married and had kids and they were all on stage. And NO ONE batted an eye, except to shed a tear at how sweet it was to see all these little kids that were born as a result of their parents WORKING together. You couldn’t have concluded “scandal” there if you tried. Should be no different with Letterman.

Leah Burton has posted a new article at http://godsownparty.com/blog/
Very enlightening reading – shows what we are up against over and over, everywhere!

Here is a brief paragraph from the article:

“Ammerman has made his positions quite clear. in publicly available speeches and articles. He believes that the United States government is planning to turn over sovereignty to the United Nations. He believes that they are secretly hidden throughout the United States, especially in inaccessible parks of the National Parks, foreign troops ready to take over. He further believes there are anywhere from 400,000 to 1,300,000 foreign troops here, including a contingent of Russian tanks in the Great Smokey National Park, all of which are under United Nations control. He believes that Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico has been given to the Russians; and that Fort Bliss in El Paso has been given to the Germans.

He believes all of this is under control of eight ruling families of the world, including Rothchilds, Warburgs and Rockefellers, who own the United States Federal Reserve and who dictate who is elected in this country.

He believes that our highest government officials are traitors and has called for the hanging of President Obama, Vice-President Biden, Secretary of State Clinton and Senator Dodd of Connecticut.

He knows to stop [the call to violence] just short of that. Rather by spouting all of this hatred and intolerance, he whips his crowd into a frenzy and then nods and smiles while members of the audience make the actual threats of violence.”

Dad is just really confused… with Mom not up to speed, it takes a village to care for Dad. When he put a gallon of milk in the pantry without telling anyone, that’s when it was decided he can’t be alone. The gases expanded and exploded the jug – sour milk was EVERYWHERE. It climbed from seventh place last year, ahead of France, Germany, the United Kingdom and Japan which completed the top five nations in the Nation Brand Index (NBI). “What’s really remarkable is that in all my years studying national reputation, I have never seen any country experience such a dramatic change in its standing as we see for the United States for 2009,” said Simon Anholt, the founder of NBI, which measured the global image of 50 countries each year.

    Now I thought Levi’s pistachio commercial was kinda cute. The inside joke about Tank being his protection from you know Who as well as the double entendre. I’m not sure about THIS one. Or has Rex Butler ‘ leaked ‘ a faux story and someone ran with it..?{ Is it serious or some game going on ?}
    ———————————-
“Levi Johnston is getting reading to pose for Playgirl in a few weeks, and he’s making sure his body is ready to be bared for the shoot.

Levi’s lawyer Rex Butler tells Us, “He is in the gym six days a week for the next three weeks.”
Butler also said that the issue should be out before the end of the year.”

Anyone else see Chris Matthews lambaste Levi? I don’t think he got the double entendre regarding “protection” – he made some nasty, snarky comments about getting Bristol pregnant. I think he was out of line to refer to Levi as the lowest of the lowest scum and must have been scraped from the bottom of the ocean.

I have noticed his bringing Sarah into the conversation several times of late and I think he still has a bit of admiration for her, although not quite as obvious as during the campaign.

No matter what he thinks of her, that is no reason to be so critical of Levi, who isn’t much more than a kid who has had some tough breaks in his short life. I sent an email to Hardball@msnbc.com and voiced this opinion.

Star @74 – (((hugs to take away the scaries)))
I saw that article on Guzman and yup – another Murdoch paper. The article mentions that she was the only black editor in some time and that there are few blacks employed by him. Someday………. he will get his due.

Pearl89 @66 – That was hilarious! Wish I’d been there to see it in person. That is probably the best way to combat some of these groups – make fun and toss their insanity back at them with a bit of inanity……..although it is probably over most of their heads. lol

aview999 @75 – I think we might see McChrystal on his way out shortly. My husband (retired Army) is astounded that he has been openly discussing such a delicate subject, especially when his statements are contrary to his C-I-C. He needs to put in his retirement papers. There was a bit of controversy over his appointment and the prior involvement with Pat Tillman’s death was brought up. Obama may not have had too many generals with the familiarity and skills in that region to put into the position. I hope the Tillmans finally get some answers and some peace of mind.

I surely hope we can soon get out of Afghanistan. It is a no-win situation and I don’t think most sane people would think of it as losing or all those idiotic statements McCain made during the campaign. There is more honor in realizing what can or cannot be, and acting accordingly, rather than losing more and more soldiers. Have been a young adult with a husband in Viet Nam in the late 60s/early 70s, it was hard because we both felt the war was futile, yet we had to do what a good Army family was expected to do – support it. I’m sure there are many families in the same situation with Iraq and Afghanistan.

I’ve also thought how rude Matthews is with his constant interrupting. He needs to move off the afternoon/evening slot and join his buddy Joe in the morning…….I never tune in to MSNBC until afternoon.

Another one I just can’t watch is Andrea Mitchell. There are so many stories that she shouldn’t be allowed to even touch, given that her husband is Alan Greenspan – there is nothing unbiased when she reports on anything to do with the economy and finances.

Dylan Ratigan had an interview with Anthony Weiner ( D-NY) and
” Dearh Panel creator Betsy M.”. Just like on Jon Stewart… it was not her day.
When she was asked repeatedly by Mr. Ratigan to answer ‘ specific ‘ questions he posed about the health care issues and got no answer he would stop the interview and say and point out to the audience…” She has refused to give me an answer to my question”. Rep. Weiner schooled her as well.

At times she scolded Mr. Ratigan ( said he was a lousy interviewer ) for not letting her talk endlessly about Her nonsense and at one point made this statement…
    McCAUGHEY: “This will go down in history as one of the most browbeating interviews in television history.” { Awwww…. her feelings were hurt ;-( }
The clip is fairly long… almost 14 minutes. It was Fun to watch though.

Funny story. I live in Santa Rosa, CA & there is a small town nearby called Sebastopol. A woman was driving her kid to school & paparazzri started taking pictures of & her son. She called police & they came. Apparently one of Dave Lettermman’s ex girlfriends lives in this area & the paparazzi are swarming the area. I guess this is going to be a really big story if they are trrolling around in Sebastopol. It seems ridiculous.

I feel sorry for the woman and her son. They probably had no idea what was going on and were frightened. I would be.

I watched that Dylan Ratigan interview with Anthony Weiner and Betsy McCaughey and thought Ratigan did a great job. Of course, the more I see Weiner the more I like him…he’s smart, does his homework and doesn’t back down.

I liked how Ratigan didn’t let Betsy get away with not answering his question and repeatedly turning the topic back to the old people ‘death panels’. As the interview went on, it reminded me more and more of Palin’s VP debate and how she only answered the questions she wanted to answer, regardless of what the moderator asked!

I agree with others here that Matthews’ interrupting his guests is getting excessive and annoying. Maybe it’s time for Ratigan to take over Chris Matthews’ place in prime time.

I love this time of the year. If you put your face very close to the earth, you will be assailed with every scent possible – soil, fungus, the smell of heavy yeast, metal, sweet like fresh baked bread, and many, many other smells.

The duff becomes almost mystical. The sound of moose hooves will echo for hundreds of yards as they traverse the trails leading up to the Chugach mountains. Sounds transform over distances, and that strange quiet that grips the winter begins to take over the landscape. You can stand perfectly still and be filled with the energy of a falling leaf.
