Open Thread – Git Along, Little Mudpups!
Yeee-Haaaa! (sp?)
That’s me trying my best to be a Texan. I know it’s a stretch, but I’ll try. Why, you may ask, am I doing my best to be a Texan? Because in the works over on the forum are plans for a Texas Mudstock! If you are a Texan, or someone willing to travel there, and you want to get in on the planning conversation, just click HERE and jump in! As of now it looks like the date and location will be December in Dallas!
And while you’re thinking about how much fun a Mudstock would be, make sure to put your name and state in the forum’s states list. For those who don’t know what the states list is – it is an easy way to find Mudflatters near you. Not long after the forums opened, the moderators and admins thought it would be a great idea to compile a list of members by what state (or country) we live in. You can see the states list HERE.
It is easy to get put on the states list – all you have to do is post an introduction in the “Introduce Yourself” area. Not sure how to do that? Just click HERE for a tutorial.
Being on the States List means that you’re automatically in the loop for information about Mudstock meetups that happen in your area! So far there have been Mudstock Meetups in Chicago, Southern California, Oregon, Connecticut, Vermont, New York City, Anchorage, Juneau, Washington D.C., and 3 in Pittsburgh! (Steeler Nation knows how to party!) Hope I’m not forgetting any.
I finally got to attend one myself, and may I say that it was a real treat. If you ever go to one, expect food, drink, merriment, laughter, political talk, and getting to know some really awesome people!
And ya know….(kicking up a clod of dirt, and spitting)…. Round these parts we often think of dividin’ Alaska up into two equal parts an’ makin’ Texas the third biggest state… (I wink, and tip my hat, and wish I were with you in more than spirit!)

How do you update the information, if you’ve moved?
Reintroduce yourself pearl89 and explain that you have moved. That is probably the easiest way to do it.
I haven’t moved, but was thinking others may have. Would reintroducing yourself, delete you from the other state list or do you administrative types handle that? I’m just curious.
It is a manual process, so we Admin types handle that.
If you are listed in the wrong state, it is probably easiest to private message me, or email the admins on – unlocktroll at gmail dot com
We’ll be adding people next Monday, so you have a few days to post your intro.
Mudstocks are a blast! (I’ve been to two!)
Y’all don’know whut ya’ bin missin’!
AKM – We had a meet up in Vermont! It was small, just like Vermont.
I’ll add that one in. Don’t know how I missed it! AKM
Wheeeee Doggies! You GO Texas! They say everything’s bigger in Texas, so show up and show us what y’all GOT!
Jason Linkins has this story just right -the Repubs that voted against Franken’s amendment that punishes contractors that “restrict their employees from taking workplace sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court” are the same ones outraged by the fake ACORN prostitution sting.
Read more at: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/07/meet-the-senators-who-vot_n_312976.html
Yee-haw is more of what you were trying for, AKM.
Having grown up in the Dallas area, which is more cosmopolitian in nature, to have the “western” flavor, Ft. Worth is a better bet, if there’s a choice of area.
Gardenslug @8 – Those same ones who voted against it were also some of the biggest recipients of military contracting donations. McConnell has often bragged about bringing home the bacon. Yes, we do have two military posts here in KY (Knox and Campbell) but there are a number of smaller “depots” that could easily be combined or eliminated.
Haliburton/KBR/Blackwater – Cheney’s connections have been known for well over a decade, but it shows how crooked Bush was (or too weak to fight Cheney) that they have been allowed to grow and prosper with no-bid contracts and no oversight.
Glad to see that Sen. Durbin spoke up against the fake ACORN outrage. I think between he and Alan Grayson, with regular nudges from Rachel Maddow, we will see the pendulum swing away from ACORN and more of the real facts come out.
I was amused to find that some airlines are going to ask people to pee before they board. That brings up some interesting thoughts. Just how are they going to check that out?
Reminds me of when I was young and we’d have a bathroom break. We would travel all over the US. Lots of fun. But usually after 1/2 hour after a break one of us three kids would say “I’ve got to go to the bathroom.” When asked why we didn’t go before . . . “I didn’t have to then.”
Got to know a lot of the native flora in each area in the US!
ACORN lost much of its credibility around the country during the last election. Rachel is targeting the most recent fake outrage but she’s also trying to restore the credibility of this organization.
It is a huge undertaking but it had to start somewhere and its going to need more than Rachael to build up its reputation.
Just called Saxby’s Washington office to see why he voted against the Franken amendment. According to his phone person, he thought it was too ‘broad’. I said so he thinks sexual assault, battery and discrimination by contractors should go unpunished?
Then I called Johnny’s Washington office, and got handed off to Francie’s voicemail. I’ll be real surprised if I hear back from her.
I have written a searing letter, that I’ve been holding back on. Don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to keep it restrained in my computer.
http://www.freeclinics.us/
Karen Marie provided this link to the National Association of Free Clinics over on the KO/Health thread, but it is worth repeating.
If you go to the site, you can check your state/zip code and see what free clinics are in your area. Donations can be made directly to any of those clinics. They almost always need volunteers. One doesn’t have to have a particular medical skill or training. I used to be a Red Cross volunteer and there are many jobs one can help with – registering, refreshements, etc.
When you look at how many free clinics are currently in existence, it certainly points out just how many need these services.
Thanks for the link GreatGranny2B
There is one fairly close to me & I think I’ll call & volunteer.
Thanks for the “hi ya’ll”, AKM!
LMK if you’re interested in coming to Texas – It looks like the air fare is about $640 r/t from Anchorage to DFW right now. :/
You’d just looooove a North Texas December day. It could be sleeting, snowing, raining, or it could be sunny and 80 degrees… take your pick!
Punk.
This is a link to sign a petition to have the Dems who vote with the Repubs to filibuster the public option will be stripped of their Chairmanship. Raquel Maddows had this on her show. Needs support for the petition. Harry Reid, initiated the decision. The Dems need to act like true Dems.

The last 3 paragraphs tell the real story, I guess.
Gramiam, I love the choices in their poll- do you think Obama should be impeached? There is, of course, Hee** ya. The only answers close to ‘no’ is: not until we settle the impeachment question, or it wouldn’t work anyway. I agree, Bring it on, and let’s get on with fixing this wounded country.
Newfoundland Dogs Rule; First, hope you are keeping up your spirits, just know I hadn’t forgotton your previous post, and sending little prayers every once in a while.
And, to what you said in #11 – I wouldn’t be able to fly if that’s the case. What about women with hyper bladder…….or men (like the ad says) who have a “going” problem. Just wondering. They might have to start an airline for just the 50′s-60′s and up crowd.

Here we go again…obstruction…but now by the Parnell administration…
Wait continues for Palin e-mails; Democrats allege coverup
RECORDS: State says it’s overwhelmed, but critics cry foul.

Public records requests made more than a year ago for Sarah Palin’s e-mails still haven’t been filled by the state, and the Alaska Democratic Party chairwoman alleges it’s an attempt to bury the past.
“I think they’re hiding something, I think this is a travesty of justice,” state Democratic Party Chairwoman Patti Higgins said Wednesday. “The law says they have 10 days to do it.”
**snip**
Another of the pending requests is by Anchorage activist Andree McLeod, who made a request on Oct. 1, 2008, for all of Sarah and Todd Palin’s e-mails concerning official business for the previous two years. McLeod reacted to the latest extension by writing state officials Wednesday that “it now seems Governor Parnell needs to keep Alaskans in the dark.”

Arizona Mothers Storm Kyl’s Senate Office, Denounce GOP as Sexist
PHOENIX — Dozens of local mothers descended on the office of Republican Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona Wednesday to denounce what they say are sexist attitudes held by Kyl and the Republican Party in general. The demonstration was organized by Phoenix area mothers in response to Kyl’s recent quip during a Senate committee meeting that he doesn’t “need maternity care.”
The protest was organized by local mothers, but a few fathers and children also attended. They carried signs saying, “Maternity Care Is Not a Joke” and “Women Are Your Constituents Too.”
The protest comes at the same time Democrats across the country are denouncing Republican leaders for holding what they see as outdated views of women.
Chris Christie, Republican gubernatorial candidate from New Jersey, has come under fire for a remark he made that critics say equates preschool to babysitting. In Virginia, gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell is drawing fire for his college thesis, written in 1989 when McDonnell was 34 years old, in which he seems to call working women detrimental to families.

I didn’t find a link to the actual White House website/blog in this story so if someone knows what it is … please post it.
The WH has decided to talk back directly to some of these misleading claims
that are floating out there.
—————————–
“Calling ‘Em Out: The White House Takes on the Press”
So a new White House strategy has emerged: rather than just giving reporters ammunition to “fact-check” Obama’s many critics, the White House decided it would become a player, issuing biting attacks on those pundits, politicians and outlets that make what the White House believes to be misleading or simply false claims, like the assertion that health-care reform would establish new “sex clinics” in schools.
Instead, the White House blog now issues regular denunciations of the Administration’s critics, including a recent post that announced “Fox lies” and suggested that the cable network was unpatriotic for criticizing Obama’s 2016 Olympics effort.
{ Anita Dunn who runs the Agency said this about Fox News }
“It’s opinion journalism masquerading as news,” Dunn says. “They are boosting their audience. But that doesn’t mean we are going to sit back.”

Gramiam – Sounds like it is time for ColorOfChange to do another petition, eh? I’ve sent an e-mail to them and others might want to also:
James Rucker, ColorOfChange.org
Madcity Chick – Good article! Glad they are finally fighting back – that’s the only way with the rightwing nutters.
Madcity Chick – BRAVO to them! In-person appearances due more than the single letter here and there. Look how effective the teabaggers were. We need more of our own grassroots action.
Funny story at http://www.ThinkProgress.org
Seems Billo thinks we lefties are afraid of Palin and Bachmann because they are so attractive! Does he have a middle-aged crisis going on or something?
More and more Republicans are showing their true colors of being sexist. Glad Pelosi is speaking back at them also. Back in the early 1980s, I was at an Army Wives’ symposium in D.C. We all bought shirts that said “A woman’s place is in the house………and in the senate”. Back then, there were very few females in Congress and we had plenty of sexists laughing off the possibility that one day there would be a number of females elected to higher positions.
A number of articles have mentioned how the Republicans think they’ll take back control in the 2010 elections as mostly the older white male righties vote in mid-term. We MUST make a conscious effort to get out and vote ourselves and encourage others (of a like mind = Democrat) to also get out and vote. It would be a shame if they were proven right simply through our laziness or belief that we couldn’t possibly lose seats.
To PepperzMom (GA): Sure thing, girlfrien’! Register on the Forum & we’ll try to get the information on there asap…
OMG – http://thinkprogress.org/2009/10/08/anti-obama-violence/
Here’s an excerpt from the story:
While discussing the Newsmax column on his XM Sirius radio show last week, Michelangelo Signorile heard from a caller, “Jim from Oklahoma,” who explained that the idea of a coup is already being planned by a group of at least 200 people:
Pulling our government down, pulling our President out, and putting him back where he should be [...] [using] the right to bear arms, it’s in the Constitution. [...] We need a coup, there needs to be a coup and if the United States military won’t do it, we’ll do it.
Jim confirmed that he was “dead serious.” Although he was coy about specific details, Jim said that he was motivated by homophobia and an interest in bringing back slavery. A second caller confessed that her own mother has been scheming against the government because she has been captivated by racist thoughts and a belief that “Jesus is coming to overthrow Barack Obama.” She pleaded for people to recognize the extremist threat against Obama.
– One of the paying sponsors of the 9/12 anti-Obama rally in September was the National Association for Rural Landowners, a group that references the incidents at Waco and Ruby Ridge to call for attacks on “government entities” and liberals. In a YouTube video posted in July, the group makes the case for a secession, followed by a violent civil war.
– Calling the government “destructive of our rights,” the founder of the popular conservative website FreeRepublic called for “removing from office the President of the United States, the Vice President of the United States and all U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives effective immediately” in July. Republican lawmakers, like Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC), regularly use the website as a portal for talking points.
Now I need to go throw up.
Petition in support of Rachel’s report that Dems voting with the GOP for filibuster should be stripped of chairmanships and leadership positions HERE:
http://boldprogressives.org/majorityvote/typ/p-?key=26148022
Sign it and forward to as many as you can.
What is it with Oklahoma??? They have Imhofe and Coburn.
Now they have “Jim” who has a group of at least 200 ready to over-throw the government and return us to slavery.
Now there is this – a law requiring all abortions to be posted on-line! http://thinkprogress.org/2009/10/08/oklahoma-abortion-online/
My apologies (and sympathies) to any posters on here who are from Oklahoma – how do you fight them?

#30 & 32 GreatGranny2B, That’s some scary stuff. Oklahoma was the only state that not one county voted for the president. It also will live in infamy for the worst act of domestic violence in our country. I suppose it’s a bastion of neo nazis, white supremacists and wackos in general. I apologize to and mean no disrespect to any “okies” here either. I live in the valley of the hypocrites east of the Rockies here in Colorado and I know you can’t control the craziness when you’re out numbered. Secretary Napolitano has her work cut out for her.
Just a “heads up” for those of us who think that an attempt at a military coup isn’t possible in the USA. Such an attempt actually occured on U.S. soil in 1933. Shots were fired at President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He was missed, but Mayor Anton Cermak of Chicago was hit and later died of his wounds.
I find it interesting that the circumstances of this attempt and the perpetrator sound eerily like the JFK assassination and the atmosphere surrounding both Presidents is identical to the current atmosphere. Read, think and ask questions NOW, for those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. One state funeral for a murdered President in my lifetime is one too many. I don’t want another one.

jc in co @38 – I understand your circumstances. I’m in one of the reddest of red and christian-est of christian areas in KY. No getting through to any of them, and their racism knows no bounds. I didn’t even dare to put Obama/Biden signs out or on my vehicle. I saw the damage done to others within the town, and living as rural as I do, being handicapped and alone 75% of the time, I opted for safety……and wasn’t happy having to settle for such.
I really do think many people are underestimating how intense and determined some of those groups are. I don’t think they are only a small percentage and cannot even be termed fringe anymore. One only has to look at the Hate Map on the Southern Poverty Law Center website to see how many groups there are and how fast they are growing.
http://www.splcenter.org/index.jsp
Lately, I’ve sent messages to Sen. McConnell almost daily, asking him where he stands and when will he speak out against these hate crimes. I have had ZERO response, not even an acknowledgement that the messages have been received. Who knows…….maybe I’ve been blocked by now.
Gramiam @39 – I’m with you – one in our lifetime is one too many. My grandfather was born the day after McKinley was assassinated and he was named for him. Grandpa was always interested in politics and we knew the full story of McKinley forwards and backwards.

N/Blue – I liked his last paragraph questioning her ability to make these statements………unfortunately, he opened the door to all the Palinistas and their misbeguided adoration of her and her abilities (or lack thereof), didn’t he?
GreatGranny2B, actually the average primary and off term voter is a woman over 60. I think those repug boys could have some problems messing with the grannies.
Maybe there is something in the water in OK. Their abortion info law is illegal and can’t be enforced and they know it. Just more fascist crap. I guess women in OK will have to leave the state. Then they have no jurisdiction. ‘
I think we should stand outside of the offices of urologists and report all the males entering for using sexual activity enhancing drugs. We should counsel them on accepting God’s will … if you can’t get it up, then accept it. God wouldn’t want you intervening with drugs. That would put an end to this crap!
SameOld – agreed! This is one old granny over 60 who will cast a ballot every time I can!
I do hope that case goes all the way to the Supreme Court and gets knocked down. When you read the entire bill, there are actually 37 questions of info that is to be provided. Not ONE asks anything about the father of the child! Also agree on these guys who go for their drugs, or vasectomies – why can they do what they want with their bodies but women can’t? I’m surprised some states haven’t started demanding proof of age to purchase condoms.
Saw the article on ThinkProgress.org and then the repeat on HuffPo about the O’Reilly interview with Michele Bachmann, where he says we on the left are bothered by Bachmann and Palin because they are so attractive. One of the commenters posted a quote from Judge Judy, which fits those two dingbats quite well: “BEAUTY FADES, STUPID LASTS FOREVER”
SameOld @46–what a hoot! I totally agree with you regarding the performance drugs. Except my thinking is from a mind/body/spirit connection. Not getting it up has many implications, not just physical.
Something and/or some changes besides drugs are what is needed. (our instant gratification culture doesn’t care about the big picture, tho)

NB… thanks for that link. It appears that if you post ‘ here’ you can use their comment system with your same log on here. It will recognize you… so go ahead and make a comment there. I did. Don’t even acknowledge that she wrote the Comments or that they are Her ideas. That is giving her ‘ credit’.. not deserved.
Others had posted the same Opinion as mine as well. ( Mine below )
———————————
First things First,… the OBVIOUS.
Palin does NOT write those rants/screeds on Her Facebook. So you can not discuss those Topics and attribute them to her. The credit does NOT belong to her.A number of Ghostwriters post those for her and therefore are not her ideas.
If you think they are her ideas there is a simple way to prove it. Put a microphone in front of her at a ‘ legitimate’ Press conference and let her explain them. Lets see the words come out of her mouth. Seeing is believing.
Would she agree to the Press conference and embarrass herself AGAIN… NO!

honesty – thanks, that’s good to know about the commenting. And yours is spot on. GG2B 44 had a similar remark. SP’s just a brand name behind which her fellow intellects cluster.
Just saw this on HuffPo — his cover for “An Even More American Life” is good:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/08/joel-stein-writes-memoir_n_314374.html
That article on her ‘financial’ post on facebook was quite entertaining, as were the comments. Not to let HonestyinGovernment have the last word, I added the following:
Sarah isn’t even talking about finance here, though it might appear so to the uninitiated.
Everything Palin says falls into one of three categories:
1. Personal attacks on people who have slighted her
2. Personal attacks on people who have not slighted her (this would include President Obama)
3. Drill Baby, Drill (this includes all economic theories, foreign affairs and diplomacy, states rights, and of course our God-given responsibility to use all those resources he put in the ground for us).
Her latest facebook post is just another way of saying #3. In the future, when her handlers give her back control of her Twitter account, I recommend they just have her Tweet a number each day.
from a link on Huffpo:
http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2009/09/kyl-i-dont-need-maternity-care-stabenow-your-mom-probably-did.php
In this article it states that in several states there is no requirement for health care insurers to cover maternity care.
Are they out of their minds? Why is this even a question?!! Why on earth – are those insurance companies really that stupid? If so, then why on earth are we allowing them to get away with denying care?!
I don’t have need for prostate exams, nor will I ever have a need for v1agra. But as far as I know, that is covered to the max! I’ve certainly not heard any complaining about the lack of it, and you know there’d be a huge hue and cry if there was a lack of uh… attention in that area, er arena.
Honest to Pete. Then again, Missouri had to pass a law requiring insurance companies to allow a new mother a 2nd day in the hospital. (with my first child, it was five days, with my second, two years later, it was three days.)
unbelievable.
(nearly went to moderation for the word “v1agra” – go figure.)
Shannyn uses a phrase that describes SP’s “fronting” of ghostwrites in FaceBook, editorials and speeches:
“host to the NeoCon body snatchers.”
That’s all she is—a shell of a person—hosting the body snatchers.

I read on Huffpo that the ADN has a story about Palin’s missing emails. Finally, someone is talking about the “missing” emails. I know I sound like a broken record, but I think a huge stink needs to be raised about this situation. There has got to be something in those emails that they are covering for her. It’s been over a year and even the ADN’s reports that the law is that the state has 10 days!
Maybe the details about the reason she quit is in those emails—-and more.
I think a huge campaign needs to be started for the state to release those emails. I’m not talking all her emails that have been scrubbed clean, I want to see all of them. We have the right to see those emails.
How can the state just break the law and get away with it? What can be done here folks?
Levi posing for Playgirl? palin must be turning over in her grave…oh wait, she’s still alive! …and she’s not opposed to this sort of thing anywayz!

Sarah has made her first public appearance in welcoming Track and his unit home. Several mention how different she looks – consensus seems to be Botox.
Accountability Legislators…..Accountabilty. Palin was not held accountable for ANYTHING. Her law breaking, secretive, underhanded bullying has set a precedent in this state. Per diem for living in your own home when she decided not to live ing Juneau? Using Yahoo for state business? Lying aboiut travel records? The list is long…the damage is real. Law makers seem to want to just brush all of this under a rug. Stand up and get some Kahoonies. I am saddened and angered by what this state has become.
Sean Parnell—get that office in order and get those emails delivered. What you are hiding must really be damaging to even you. You are brreaking the law. 10 days has come and gone….last year. Do your job.
@59 Trisha — I think the state’s excuses about the “difficulty” of processing the requests for QP’s emails are a little thin (“it’s hard, it’s hard).
They talk about “21,000 documents” that have to be reviewed. Okay, most of those are emails, and the average email is certainly less than 200 words. How long does it take to review a 200-word document? Well, damn near everybody reads 200 words a minute, and even allowing for Palinese-English translation, three minutes should suffice. And say another three minutes for the redaction.
So, six minutes per email, or ten per hour per reviewer. (And this is generous).
Therefore, the huge load of 21,000 documents should take (at most) 2,100 reviewer-hours. By a happy coinkidink, the number of work hours in 52 40-hour weeks is 2,080. So, if they had an average of one person working on the project for the year that has now elapsed, they should be done.
