So, What Planet ARE We On, Exactly?
WAAAA! I hope the president fails!
NOOOOO! Barack Obama is telling our kids to stay in school!
AAAAA! Anyone who wants me to have health care is a Nazi!
HOORAY! We lost the Olympic bid!
BOO HISS! Our president won the Nobel Peace Prize!
Update:
A Refreshingly Strong Statement from the DNC
“The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists — the Taliban and Hamas this morning — in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize. Republicans cheered when America failed to land the Olympics and now they are criticizing the President of the United States for receiving the Nobel Peace prize — an award he did not seek but that is nonetheless an honor in which every American can take great pride — unless of course you are the Republican Party. The 2009 version of the Republican Party has no boundaries, has no shame and has proved that they will put politics above patriotism at every turn. It’s no wonder only 20 percent of Americans admit to being Republicans anymore – it’s an embarrassing label to claim. “

clearly not the one I grew up on!
well that’s it in a nutshell!
Luckily that is only on planet GOP. We must all join forces -avoid them, their nastiness and their endless useless blather. This is our time, our moment, our election, our man winning the big prize. Let the crybabies weep. We’re here to partaaaaaaaaaaaaay! Cheers!
You said it, AKM. Apparently, it’s Opposite Day and Groundhog’s Day all rolled into one.
We are on the right planet, it’s just that aliens have been dropped down and are living among us- Limbaugh is their leader…
Well, my husband rang me today from Kenya and I asked him if he had heard that PO had won the Nobel Peace Prize. “Yes” he said, “and justifiably so.”
On another note, it has just occurred to me that those Palin photos that have been removed, may have been a spoof. She looked a little well-endowed in one of them, and someone else remarked that her head looked a little strange in another photograph. Maybe there is some photoshopping going on. I’m beginning to think that someone was playing a practical joke.
all I can do is to continue to pray daily for President Obama’s safety (as well as the safety of his family). visit here and other like minded places for sanity checks & try to educated others about tolerance, human kindness, love of country by example rather than rants.
akm – thank you and the other mud pups for all you do
The GOP is mad because despite all of their conspiracy theories, most of America and the world doesn’t even see or hear them. Internationally, their voices are not even heard. Globally they’re the crazy 1%. They’re nothing. Nobodies. And it kills them.
The loons are LOUD, but they represent less than 20% of our population.
The loons, led by Beck, Rush and Palin, are more visible than ever due to our 24/7 “news” cycle.
Nevermind them – they are like buzzing, pesky little gnats.
SHOO NOW!
Honestly, they are like cartoons – baffoons!
The MAJORITY, who duly elected this fine President, stand tall and proud -
let the American Taliban scream and moan, THEY DO NOT MATTER ANY MORE!
Today’s average Republican is a poor-loosing, scared, bigoted, homophobic, woman-hating, God fearing, morally bankrupt, hyprocritical, juvenile, ignorant fool. Anyone who can support their current agenda and behavior deserves only ridicule and scorn.
Let them squall all they want. They only serve to emphaisis the truth of my statement. But we should NEVER discount them, or take our eyes off them for a second as they have shown a deviousness and absolute lack of any shame to underake any tactic to serve their agenda and undermine the current Administrations’.
The rabid GOPers are from Pluto and are upset that it lost it’s planetary status.
Don’t worry AKM, these people come from the same planet that Barney Frank spoke of when asked a question at a townhall meeting by the little unhinged larouchey girl.
your anus?
They’re “Talibangelists.”
Must be a tough day to work at Cluster-Fox….har..har..matey..
The DNC summed it up pretty well this morning…’nuf saud:
“The 2009 version of the Republican Party has no boundaries, has no shame and has proved that they will put politics above patriotism at every turn. It’s no wonder only 20 percent of Americans admit to being Republicans anymore – it’s an embarrassing label to claim.”
I think the question should be “What planet are THEY on?” Uranus would be too good of an answer.
At least Pat Buchanan on MSNBC had the graciousness not to criticize Obama for getting winning.
The rightwingnuts are nuts – they’re not right in the head.
I totally agree with Hedgewytch in post #11: the Repubicans are engaging in
totally negative and destructive behavior, but they MUST NOT be simply ignored, either. They are devious and cannot be trusted to ever say or do the right thing. They’ve either lost or never had a good moral compass. So sad, but hopefully they are truly on the decline. Even so, they won’t likely disappear but rather will regroup into something else.
Foxsuckers.
Thank goodness the DNC is finally getting blunt about this. The extremists really would destroy this country in order to save it (in their image). They can’t stand that Obama might have any success. When Bush was President, they claimed that “liberals wanted Bush to fail” though I never heard a liberal say that. Now we can actually hear them saying they want Obama to fail at things. This is an all time low. Giving aid and comfort to our enemies. I think that is part of the definition of treason in our Constitution.
I liked this comment that I found in an English newspaper.
“Fact is within 24 ish months he’s got the world talking again, and people interested in politics again and it’s not his fault he makes it look easy, and pity his predecessor couldn’t do the same with the 8 YEAR stab he had it.”
They are from the planet that lies at the intersection of Glenn Beck’s “White Culture” and Sarah Palin’s “Real America.”
I don’t care what the stupid GOPhers say. I’m celebrating a wonderful, wonderful tribute to our great and glorious president that the whole world appreciates more than we do in America. So big congratulations, Mr. President and Happpy Birthday Bo.
#16 Winski, yea, I went over to post something mean on greta’s retched blog & it’s down. She’s putting up threads about the donald’s daughter’s book cuz you know that’s much more important than the president receiving a Nobel Peace Prize. What a bunch of small, bitter haters.
I’m glad Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize. And the reason I am glad is because I hope he sees it as a sign that his priority need to be PEACE in our lifetime- no more goddamn war!
What I would love to happen is for our President to go on TV and say that he has decided to bring all the troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan. Sure that would be radical but you know what – all the billions of dollars we have spent there, all the lives that have been sacrificed, all the damage that has been done – has not brought peace to anyone. Heck it hasn’t even captured Bin Laden who If I recall was our excuse for going there in the first place.
When THIS country doesn’t have homeless on the street, any man, woman or child without healthcare, schools falling apart, millions of people out of work – well then maybe then we can have the ‘luxury’ of waging war in a place we have no business being.
I want a PEACE president and I pray that it is Barack Obama. It’s one of the main reasons I voted for him. I, for one, never forget that he was one of the few to vote against the Iraq war. I’m sick a the war mentality of this country. I am disgusted by the abysmal waste and destruction and cost of waging war. Not only is it morally wrong, we just plain can’t afford it! We have our own problems.
I am happy and surprised for Barack Obama and this out-of-left-field honor, but I also hope that he understands (and I think he does) that this is just the beginning.
PEACE IN OUR TIME!
Well, hopefully this INSANITY by the GOP is weaning away the independents and those Republicans with a brain in their head, leaving only the crazy-eyed wingnutty lunatics to howl at the moon and whisper conspiracy theories about socialism, marxism and birthers ….. oh, my.
CELABRATION! LET’S ALL GET TOGETHER AND CELEBRATE! CELEBRATION! WHOO HOO!
It takes genuine strength to proceed with restraint, dignity and thought. To constantly impulsively react with bitterness and accusations is not only weakness, but also indicative of the complete lack of regard for any but themselves. And the Republicans are too wrapped up in that mode to realize that their actions are destructive to themselves as well.
This is definitely a vote of confidence in his skills and influence and a pointed nudge from the larger world for him to keep to the course – the progressive one of peace and enlightenment.
nswfm@17, LOL!
This clearly shows that if Chicago HAD won the Olympics – the Right WingNuts would have complained just as loudly as they cheered when Chicago lost.
It’s all so insane! But yet in the land of GOP – it makes perfect sense: whatever the President does, we HATE.
Well done GOPers – you have officially crossed the point of No Return to Sanity.
P.S. I will bet dollars to peanuts that if the President had won the Nobel EIGHT years from now – there would be STILL be exasperation and outrage from the Right.
I have a suggestion for anyone interested here: I see many of you calling Republicans “GOP”. Do you know what that stands for? It’s an endearing nickname they have for themselves that stands for Grand Old Party. I see absolutely NOTHING grand about them or the Republican party. I refuse to use this term any longer, on this blog or anywhere else. I urge you all to do the same.
Yes AKM it really does seem that these people are from another world.
Right before Obama won the primaries a person (nicest thing I can say) OK an idiot co-worker commented at the restaurant/ hotel/bar we worked at, “The World is not ready for a n—– or a woman president”. My response to him was ” I don’t know what planet you are from but my world is my world is”. Then I started saying all the names I could think of such as Margret Thatcher, Golda Meir, Nelson Mandela,Benazir Bhutto, Indira Gandhi, I was just dumbfounded that he would make such a statement like that in front of our customers and kids.
I think the Nobel committee that bestowed this honor on our President are telling us about our world.
The GOP is now the Globally Obsolete Party.
Everyone is the world loves Obama, everyone but terrorists and the taliban.
I don’t have time for crazies today. They have nothing to say, no ideas, no solutions, only hate and guns and racism and vileness and more hate.
Today, I will ignore them and pretend they are they are not here.
Got that Susie, not grand at all:
The GOP is now the Globally Obsolete Party.
Exactly. I have thought about this, and can only imagine what the GOP would be saying if Chicago won the Olympics? The GOP would be going crazy about the “cult of Obama”.
Any issue with the Chicago Olympics would be Obama’s fault, etc.
They never stop.
Can anyone imagine what we could get done in this country if these right wing idiots weren’t trying to drag us backwards through the mud?
They really are an embarassment to the United States.
This just reminds me of when my daughters were in school, and they had Opposite Day.
That means the world will be back to sanity tomorrow, right?
RIGHT?????
I put this on the other thread as well but will repost the link.
——————————
“A White House spokesman says Obama will donate the entire $1.4 million from his Nobel Peace Prize to charity.”
http://cbs3.com/topstories/obama.peace.prize.2.1237557.html
Will they try to construe this as ” Spreading to wealth around “… to Charities?
Which ones were not mentioned yet. Truly a pathetic bunch of ‘_________ ? ‘
I might even have to stop my boycott of CNN and tune in just for today just to see who is whining the most out there. Hopefully Mccain will be quoted as saying something stupid on camera. Get all the RepugNuts quotes on camera for today… for the re-election Campaigns in 2010.
Frank Schaefer (sp) said it best that they are angry because they are so anti everything science, art, literature, technology just to name a few and the rest of the world is passing them by while they sit on the mountain top waiting for the day of rapture to arrive.
the rethugs dont want peace. they want tax cuts for the rich and war. that is how they make their “living”…
AKM,
Why do you ask such complex questions?
AKM: please post my comment from the previous post relative to the Nobel Peace Prize – how it is determined and that “it can be awarded for current efforts, rather than for having accomplished a goal or resolved and issue.” It really is all about how it is reported. Maybe the news sources (CNN, HuffPo, MSNBC … don’t really watch any news anymore) have to report the disagreements, but couldn’t they point out that it is wrong, and that it is hatred, and the total opposite of what this is supposed to mean to the world? How would Walter Cronkite have reported this news?
Oh, and I meant to tell Southpaws … I like the term Foxsuckers.
Yeah – Foxsuckers! Why haven’t we thought of that one already?
And a re-post from today’s open thread, ’cause it just seems to fit better here:
Found via Sadly, No! in one of the Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize threads:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpicUOJ9xL0
Yep, I’m easily amused, I admit it.
Remember how Obama should have stepped aside and let Hillary win the primaries? Remember how America wasn’t ready for a black President, of course, so why didn’t he just realize it and wait his turn? Remember last summer when the candidate went to Germany and gave speech before hundreds of thousands of adoring fans? How arrogant. Who does he think he is? Only a president should do that. He should have at least waited until he won. And then he did win. And he took a world tour and gave a game changing speech in the Cairo. Who did he think he was? A rock star? The arrogance and audacity–it’s breathtaking. If the man would just wait his turn, dammit.
(I stole this comment from Andrew Sullivans blog, from one of his readers.)
The imbecilic irrationality of the reflexive “bash all things Obama” instinct of the right was succinctly encapsulated by Glenn Beck today.
Beck claims that, “The Nobel Peace Prize should be turned down by Barack Obama and given to the Tea Party goers and the 9/12 Project.”
Yeah, if there’s one thing that says “peace” it’s semiliterate irrational mobs comparing Obama to Hitler, denouncing ACORN as Obama’s SS, and continuing the “death panel” hysteria. Yup, these folks were a veritable crowd of latter day Ghandis. I can’t see why the Nobel Prize Committee overlooked these loons, er, good people.
Let me get this straight. When the Olympics did not go to Chicago, it was a sign of Obama’s weakness internationally, and that was a bad thing. When Obama wins arguably the biggest international prize a leader could possibly win, it is also a bad thing. What am I missing here?
Do these morons pause, even for a nanosecond, before venting caustic hot gas from out of their pieholes?
Many congrats to President Obama -
and those of us who cast there vote
last November for CHANGE!
Change that this country can find
common ground with other nations.
Change that we do not have to use
military might when words and world
opinion will suffice.
Change that we can keep our
nation safe without destroying
the constitution.
Change that torture and
imprisonment without
due process is wrong.
Change that the US will
be a nation of LAWS again,
not on gut-based decisions,
and twisted lies.
And to the Repubs that believe that the US
should continue to live in fear of 9-11,
in the failed policies of Bush & Co.,
(Sorry Texas) move them all to Crawford
and let them cede.
Gold star for the DNC! That might be the best thing I’ve read all day. Finally, they said what a lot of us have been thinking, and they’re showing some spine.
I also find it mildly entertaining that the DNC said the GOP has thrown in their lot with the terrorists – I’m failing at phrasing why I find it funny… Maybe I mean ironic. I seem to have lost command of the English language today, but I’m sure you guys know what I mean.
Okay so here is a shining example of the conservative base that shows up on threads on politico.com apparently not moderated:
“I guess the America-Whitey-hating Rev. Ignoramous Wright didn’t bother you though, did he, Lib? Figures a dumocrap tramp would stand up for black bunch of trash than a decent white woman. Way to go, Lib. Help the muslim street pimp destroy this country while padding his and Monkey Face’s pockets with luxury. What has he done for you lately, stupid?
And who’s your candidate, Mr. Independent? Don’t have one, do you? Vote for the Muslim street pimp and give him another 4 years to destroy our country.
daisymae”
Who is destroying whom? As far as I’m concerned, these hate filled people are a threat to our national security.
I do certainly understand, E in New England. Hard to tell the rhetoric apart without a roadmap anymore.
Now that our President has been so honorably acknowledged, the crazies think it’s a good time to impeach:
http://thinkprogress.org/2009/10/09/floyd-brown-impeachment/
They truly live in upside-down world.
I am so glad Woodhouse (of the DNC) made this statement. What with some of the outrageous stuff I’ve read about GOPers and other rightwing nutjobs today over at HuffPo, I’m convinced all of these people are certifiable. And unAmerican, too.
Today’s a good day otherwise!
With Republicans it’s always Party First – not America First.
Why do they hate America so much?
I read earlier that Michael Steele said that President Obama won because he is so visible and that he hasn’t really done anything, or something to that effect. Yea, right. Well, he certainly didn’t invade another country for no reason. Sounds like sour grapes to me. I knew they would have negative things to say.
Congratulations, President Obama!!!
These people live in Bizzaro World.
Last Friday morning they were laughing at Obama because he went over to Copenhagen certain that the world loved him and “he lost the Olympics” for Chicago. They talked about how the rest of the world was laughing at him, he’s wet behind the ears, who does he think he is.
Fast forward one short week. Now they’re saying the world loves him, they love him because he goes around the globe putting down America, apologizing for our past mistakes, blah, blah, blah. Of course they all love him. Who wouldn’t.
Fear, hate and anger is what drives these people. Listen to Limbaugh for a minute (any longer is not recommended) and you can hear him seething. You can feel it through the radio.
I don’t know how they can stop on a dime and shift positions 180 degrees at a moment’s notice. And for the life of me i don’t understand why their huddled masses fall for it day in and day out.
These jokers don’t just speak in tongues, they speak in forked-tongues. And people buy it.
Fear, hate and anger are powerful and dangerous motivators.
I thought this was a freakin’ Peace prize.
Republicans are probably upset that Ronald Regan was not awarded also.
The RNC/GOP is nothing more but a domestic terrorist organization…
“The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists — the Taliban and Hamas this morning — in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize,” wrote DNC Communications Director Brad Woodhouse. “Republicans cheered when America failed to land the Olympics and now they are criticizing the President of the United States for receiving the Nobel Peace prize — an award he did not seek but that is nonetheless an honor in which every American can take great pride — unless of course you are the Republican Party. The 2009 version of the Republican Party has no boundaries, has no shame and has proved that they will put politics above patriotism at every turn. It’s no wonder only 20 percent of Americans admit to being Republicans anymore – it’s an embarrassing label to claim.”
Even Bob Dale is calling the GOP obstructionists & Jeb Bush says Obama is on the right track. Looking for sane repubs…come out come out wherever you are.
What a great summary of the GOP “platform??” Thank you!
Another fantastic surprise for the day: I am SO glad the DNC is finally calling out the GOP on the pseudo-patriotism they have displayed since Obama was elected. (Well, long before too, it’s just gone to a whole new level of late.) I kept thinking that at some point they would stop and listen to themselves and realize how truly anti-American they sound. Today I realize that is never going to happen. What’s worse, those who may realize it probably just don’t care. It is a sad state of affairs when, not even for a moment, can they stop and recognize what an honor this is for Obama and the entire country. I have never seen anything quite like it. It is absolutely shameful.
Ah, yes indeed. Planet GOP is a strange place. It is not on my list of favorite destinations.
All kidding aside, they truly are a disgraceful bunch. It is hard to believe I ever belonged to such a group. Oh, the consternation……
Remember a year and a half ago when if you criticized the President of the United States you were told that you were unpatriotic? : )
The entire USA is realizing that there is a difference between Christers and Christians. It’s about time.
Christians are supportive of Pres. Obama, or at least tolerant, whilst the Christers are the ones making all the rubbish claims and noise and hiding behind their piety as a shield from any criticism.
But as long as you let Rupert Murdoch be the Christer media megaphone, that delusional 20% will still shout the sane 80% down.
Why the US continues to let a single Aussie Christer dominate the entire nation’s news cycles is beyond reason.
Wonder what the Dixie Chicks are thinkin’ lately? They got BANNED by all the ‘good ole boy’ stations and called all sort of horrid things by the likes of folks like Toby Keith [spit...] all for disagreeing with Bush. Does the Grossly Outdated Party even understand IRONY?
A Nobel Prize,……bravo!
So pathetic that the republican party can’t appreciate the tremendous honor this prestigious award means for our president. This is not a bunch of Democratic party loyalists who voted – these are people from outside the United States who recognize the ambitious national and international agenda that Barack Obama has undertaken. I read somewhere that it is an aknowledgement of how powerful HOPE can be (and how long we’ve been without it!).
I seem to remember that, when anyone dared to criticize Bush for the slightest thing, they were labeled as ‘unpatriotic’. Guess that only applies if you’re criticizing a republican who’s making a complete disaster out of the country. Suddenly it’s become ‘patriotic’ to be against anything and everything regardless of how it can help millions of people, merely because it comes from the Obama administration.
Congrats to the DNC for finally speaking out about the irrational republican hatred of the president and for equating them with terrorists…it’s probably the most accurate description of them I’ve heard yet!
Pres Obama, through his speeches,his book, his world view and pursuit of peace inspired millions and millions of people around the world to be better citizens and gave hope for world peace LONG before he was elected your president. His powerful message resonated throughout the World and IMO, that message and the impact it has had to date and the impact it will have in the future is why he is being recognized The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded on behalf of all of us..the entire world. As a Canadian, I am proud of him and congratulate him for this great recognition . I am ashamed that some of my American neighbours are so full of hate that they paint this honour as a negative.Sen McCain just now on CNN stumbled through a half assed congratulatory blather with not one ounce of sincerity. I am truly ashamed.

I do certainly understand, E in New England. Hard to tell the rhetoric apart without a roadmap anymore.
Seriously.
I just think it’s funny, because I do think the behavior of the right IS dangerous to our national security, far more dangerous than the often baseless claims the right makes against our president. So while I agree with the DNC on this point, it still reads a little “You’re playing with terrorists!” “No, YOU’RE playing with terrorists!”
The GOP will pay for its 2008-2009 hate orgy for years or decades at the polls. The far religious right like Palin will drive out any moderate Republicans, and thoroughly disgust the independents, so the GOP will slip into insignificance outside the deep South. A tiny minoriy in the GOP is waking up to the fact that making Limbaugh their leader is a disaster- but it is too little, too late.
Maybe the DNC and the Democratic Party will be raising their voices louder and more often:
Calling ‘Em Out: The White House Takes on the Press — Obama aides say they can’t rely on reporters to referee public debates.
http://www.time.com/time/politics/article/0,8599,1929058,00.html
According the MSNBC Limbaugh will be a judge for the 2010 Miss America contest.
I guess Trump still likes him.
……..Nobel Peace Prize……..
Has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?
Congratulations Mr President.
ps happy bday Bo the dog.

I read somewhere that it is an aknowledgement of how powerful HOPE can be (and how long we’ve been without it!).
Exactly. This is an acknowledgment that Obama has restored some amount of respect internationally, something we’ve been missing for a very long time. He hasn’t fixed everything, and really, no rational person could expect anyone from ANY party to fix EVERYTHING in one term, let alone in less than half of that.
I think you’re right about how powerful hope can be, and I think that scares a lot of the hardcore parrots. With hope, people can see an alternative to their current situation, and it can lead to uprisings (for lack of a better word), which is the last thing those in power on the right want. I feel like it’s along the same lines of people getting all riled about Obama talking about education – “god forbid we educate anyone, because then they might be able to think for themselves, and we’ll lose them!”, you know?
I seem to remember that, when anyone dared to criticize Bush for the slightest thing, they were labeled as ‘unpatriotic’. Suddenly it’s become ‘patriotic’ to be against anything and everything regardless of how it can help millions of people, merely because it comes from the Obama administration.
It’s hypocrisy, pure and simple. You’re entitled to free speech in this country, but there is a way to do that in a respectful, rationale, PRODUCTIVE manner. The far right refuse to do any of those things. They are entirely within their rights to disagree with our president’s policies, but I don’t see them offering help or better solutions. And when you get to the point where your hatred helps fuel security threats to our president, you’ve gone well over the line of free speech.
Let ‘em continue to howl at the moon….maybe they’ll then been beemed back up ~ or more than likely, down!
Nevertheless, I am very proud that our President inspires HOPE around the world; despite the evil that resides within our very own borders.
Peace Be With You All ~ and Congratulations MR. PRESIDENT.
Yes you can!
Deep breath. Thinking back to just one short year ago when Bible Spice was still stirring up “real” americans…..
Congratulations to us and US–for electing a black man with a muslim name to be President of the United States. We were hopeful last year and we are still hopeful now, and after 8 years of fear, that is a wonderful feeling.
Steve Clemons can write about it better than I.

Understanding Murdoch and Fox News
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/9/18/171343/038
“You think you know about Rupert Murdoch? You think you understand his business practices and how they translate with his Fox News empire?
This man buys and destroys politicians and disrupts political processes through media manipulation and propaganda, all over the world. You already know a lot about him but to get the brutal facts, I would like to recommend a diary that you will no doubt save for all its helpful history, facts and information.”
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/9/20/221235/345
“Fox News is now endeavouring to destroy the office of … (the) President through all means possible. Less than a year into his Presidency. Tying his hands by disabling his administration picks via the tactics of smear, innuendo and easily discreditable conspiracy theories.”
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/9/18/163025/731
NBC White House Correspondent Chuck Todd concurred that the prize posed problems for Obama.
“You’re right, will he go to Stockholm to pick it up?
What does he do with the money? You get a million dollars.
You get over a million dollars for winning this.” (The prize is actually given in Oslo. There is a banquet in Stockholm.)
But Todd was confident that Obama would survive the crisis.
“Mark’s probably right,” he said. “He’ll figure out some way of accepting this in another form, not on his own behalf.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chuck Todd a “journalist” and “Whitehouse correspondent”, does not know the difference between Sweden and Norway!!
THEN he goes on to report that Obama winning the Nobel Prize as a crisis??
THIS is “the press” that is supposed to be keeping the public informed.
He makes Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh look intelligent.
And they call his network liberal?
How about unpatriotic, aligned with Hamas and the Taliban.
The republicans want power back so badly they are all too willing to trash their own country.
Now the media are so desperate for sensationalism, they follow lock step with the republicans.
Only in America.
I loved hearing on NPR this morning that my President had one the Nobel Peace Prize. It was early, about 7:30 and I thought immediately that I wanted to post it here in the Flats, but alas, I was at the wheel of my car.
I was so proud of him, and the committee that not only nominated him, but chose him. What a great message to send to the world.
I choose to focus on the incredible good fortune this may bring, and on the fact that he is only the third sitting President to get the honor bestowed upon him.
WTG, Mr. President. I’m so proud I voted for you.
more from the Aussie diaries:
“Fox which preys on fear and encourages people to hate other Americans. Because to an outsider, the Fox news channel appears to be a constant multimedia smorgasbord of hatred directed at anyone Mr Murdoch it seems does not already control. But the people Fox encourages dislike and intolerance of are Americans. Murdoch is teaching people that the it is OK for Americans to no longer look beyond their differences and to forget about looking after their own, looking after each other, that it doesn’t really matter any more.
“…the dialog and framing of every story was intended to destroy the American peoples respect for the office of the President and devolving into something very scary. The tactics the GOP and Fox News are engaging in are the tactics which were used back in 1974 in Australia, where the opposition simply refused to do anything at all on the pretext of corruption. Murdoch is using it again, but this time I believe if he succeeds the consequences to democracy will reverberate around the world.”
The more we are aware of Murdoch’s history and mo of Foxgop the more we can push back.
It’s about time the DNC grew a pair.
Now they have to put a leash and a muzzle on their blue dogs and train them to heel. Then maybe Obama can actually get something done.
Living down here in crazy land in GA, I haven’t been out among the local populace today to look at the faces of the right-wingers, but I know their reaction will be more of the same hate-fueled diatribes.
I do have to report that Erick Erickson, who is on the Macon City Council here, has responded to the President’s Nobel Peace Prize by issuing a statement on his blog, RedState that is a new low. He states that he didn’t know that the NPP Committee had an affirmative action clause it uses for deciding who receives the award, or something to this effect. Erickson recently wrote an op-ed in the local paper calling union members thugs because the police officers are trying to unionize. He also wants the city to fire them if their efforts are successful, and goes a step further and calls them keystone cops. The officers and local union members confronted him on Tuesday at the CC meeting, asking for an apology. He refused to apologize. The president of a Central GA union reminded him that unions are politically involved in campaigns and will be there if he chooses to seek a higher political office. The union members told him they’d be watching him. The best thing to come from all of this is that Erickson has made it known that he will not seek re-election to his seat on the city council. The sooner he leaves Macon, the better off the city will be. I can’t wait. Many like myself in GA have been trying to get the wingers out of all levels of government and off local boards of education, and we are seeing some progress, but we have so many ignorant, stupid, racist, small-minded individuals here that should be declared officially brain dead because of listening to rw radio entertainers and watching too much Fuchs Noose. If Fuchs Noose or one of the rw entertainers says it, it’s true, no question about it. Sheesh.
Today is a special day. President Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize and today is John Lennon’s birthday.
Give Peace a chance.
The last time a sitting president won the Nobel Peace Prize it was 1919. Before that it was in 1906. President Obama shares this honor with Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Jimmy Carter. What do they all have in common? None of them are republicans! Ok, Teddy was once, but even he couldn’t stand them and jumped out to form his own “Progressive Party.”
Hey Repugs: Our President is a black democrat AND he’s good at it! Get over it and stop dishonoring this good nation, its people and this wonderful President. The world is watching you and believing that we hold your beliefs. We do not. If you don’t believe this, you will see our answer at the polls.
The Democrats are finally learning from the Republican play book on how to
control the news media. I am sorry that this type of rhetoric is necessary
but I love the fact that it is finally being done. sticks and stones may break their bones but names will also hurt them. Those republicans said I was
a communist eventhough I own my own car”how dare they”. Quoting Michael
Vick “I have a dog in the fight”.
I have an idea why don’t we all put the 800 numbers of the right wing talk
radio shows and flood their lines with unwanted calls. What do you think?
Spread it around.
Now, I hardly agree with the regressives, but, Obama with the Noble Peace Prize? Really? I guess their must not have been any Iraqi, Iranian, Pakistani or Afgans voting, eh?
The first thing I thought when I heard was It took 25 years longer than George Orwell thought for the slogans of 1984 to become reality.
“War is Peace,” “Freedom is Slavery,” “Ignorance is Strength.”
No Bush policy has changed. Iraq is still occupied. The Guantanamo torture prison is still functioning. Rendition and assassinations are still occurring. Spying on Americans without warrants is still the order of the day. Civil liberties are continuing to be violated in the name of Oceania’s “war on terror.”
Obama has done nothing to hold the criminal Bush regime to account, and the Obama administration has bribed and threatened the Palestinian Authority to go along with the US/Israeli plan to deep-six the UN’s Goldstone Report on Israeli war crimes committed during Israel’s inhuman military attack on the defenseless civilian population in the Gaza Ghetto.
The US Ministry of Truth is delivering the Obama administration’s propaganda that Iran only notified the IAEA of its “secret” new nuclear facility because Iran discovered that US intelligence had discovered the “secret” facility. This propaganda is designed to undercut the fact of Iran’s compliance with the Safeguards Agreement and to continue the momentum for a military attack on Iran.
I just received this email
!
(SouthPaw)
This morning, Michelle and I awoke to some surprising and humbling news. At 6 a.m., we received word that I’d been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009.
To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who’ve been honored by this prize — men and women who’ve inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace.
But I also know that throughout history the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it’s also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes.
That is why I’ve said that I will accept this award as a call to action, a call for all nations and all peoples to confront the common challenges of the 21st century. These challenges won’t all be met during my presidency, or even my lifetime. But I know these challenges can be met so long as it’s recognized that they will not be met by one person or one nation alone.
This award — and the call to action that comes with it — does not belong simply to me or my administration; it belongs to all people around the world who have fought for justice and for peace. And most of all, it belongs to you, the men and women of America, who have dared to hope and have worked so hard to make our world a little better.
So today we humbly recommit to the important work that we’ve begun together. I’m grateful that you’ve stood with me thus far, and I’m honored to continue our vital work in the years to come.
Thank you,
President Barack Obama
Hows the weather in fantasy land?
Gitmo – FAIL
Iraq – FAIL
Afganistan – FAIL
Pakistan – FAIL
Iran – getting ready to FAIL
Let’s be honest, side by side in a blind test, you couldn’t tell the Bush / Obama policies apart! That is because this really isn’t a republican vs democrat debate. These are Military / Industrial complex policies. The armaments corporations are in the drivers seat now, Bush / Obama are just carrying the water.
At least Cindy Sheehan hasn’t sold out the anti-war movement like the rest of the left has. There is someone 10000000 more times deserving of a noble peace prize.
isn’t it great to, FINALLY, hear from the dnc with their new found balls (think alan grayson, also)…..the republiCONS are really showing their true colors and, again FINALLY, i think they are being recognized for what they really are (think al franken’s amendment and the 30 white, male republiCONS voting against abused women being allowed to have a day in court)…..and they don’t want us to have health care reform…..it’s about time we are seeing governance for WE, THE PEOPLE….oh, did i mention they don’t want that either…..???
Ryan H, do you think the Nobel Peace Prize Committee isn’t perfectly aware of the issues you are complaining about?
The Committee was quite open about its reasons for awarding the prize. Not everything is about the U.S.
No. No it doesn’t.
It sure didn’t take Bush all that long to ruin this country? Seems to me all Obama and the CONgress would need to do is roll back most of the legislation passed in the last 8 years and things would be astoundingly better. You have to start asking yourself why the regressives and Bush could ram through ever piece of dog squeeze legislation they wanted when they were the majority. What gives with the Dems? They can’t even get Single Payer! Its pathetic!
Gitmo, Iraq and Afganistan, along with all the other hundreds of military bases around the world promoting the American Empire could all be shut down with the stroke of a pen.
my Obama is the anti-Christ joke did not go over well this morning after I heard the news. I WAS JUST KIDDING, Good job DNC.
And it was just as insane then as it is today!
Woodrow Wilson, the liberal imperialist with whom Obama bears some marked affinities, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1919, having brought America into the carnage of the First World War. The peace laureate president who preceded him was Teddy Roosevelt, who got the prize in 1906 as reward for sponsorship of the Spanish-American war and ardent bloodletting in the Philippines.
TR was given the peace prize not long after he’d displayed his boundless compassion for humanity by sponsoring an exhibition of Filipino “monkey men” in the 1904 St Louis World Fair as “the missing link” in the evolution of Man from ape to Aryan, and thus in sore need of assimilation, forcible if necessary, to the American way. On receipt of the prize, Roosevelt promptly dispatched the Great White Fleet (sixteen U.S. Navy ships of the Atlantic Fleet including four battleships) on a worldwide tour to display Uncle Sam’s imperial credentials, anticipating by scarce more than a century, Obama’s award, as he prepares to impose Pax Americana on the Hindukush and portions of Pakistan.
#83 majii: thanks for the info, great post and yes I saw Erickson’s remarks on Firedoglake this morning. Appalling and racist – par for the course for right wingers.
I also saw on Huffpo that the President will be donating the $1.4 mil award money from the Nobel to charities. No doubt the right wing will find something to complain about it.
The President himself has said that he didn’t feel as though he deserved the award. But to turn it down – as others have suggested – would have been a slap to the international community who are clearly signalling their acceptance of the US back as one of the leaders in world peace and disarmament.
America used to be the place where anyone could be successful. Where dreams came true and it didn’t matter if you were rich or poor, you could make it here. America used to command the respect of the world, where the best of the best went. It’s been a while since that image has been true. With Obama being elected – it was like America woke up from a nightmare. The country is still haunted by the neocon and the religious far right but it’s encouraging to see the country move slowly but surely away from that dark place.
Thanks to the antics of the teabaggers, birthers, deathers, town hallers, smuggers, Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, Palin (and a whole host of other demented conservative media figures) – the Far Right Conservatives and the Republican Party have clearly shown their true colours. I hope they keep it up – we don’t want anyone to be deceived as to their real agenda: Americans for Prosperity – Only if You are a Real American by OUR Standards.
It’s Millter time…
Ryan…..Take your concerns to the Nobel Prize Committee. Surely they will reverse their poorly thought out unanimous decision once they realize they didn’t consult your analytical expertise.
As for me and my family….on this day that our American President was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize …..I will content myself in saying a simple “Congratulations.”
Plenty of time for critical analysis and cynicism tomorrow. Several of your points do have merit.
It’s not “fantasy land,” my friend. It’s simply good manners and appreciation for the forces of hope and change in this world….no matter which direction of origination.
Have a great weekend, Lee. I am glad you’re happy about award thingy for Obama and hopefully didn’t insult you. Obviously, I just have a vastly different way of looking at this news.
Distill it down for me again, Ryan H. What’s your point (succinctly please) exactly?
Restraint folks. WE want to make Snosks job as easy as possible here.
@Ryan H.
Although you are right on many points regarding actual differences and/or similarities in the practicing policies of the Obama Administration, can you image what would happen should things be changed overnight?
The GOP and other rightwing-nuts have already used revolting terms when referring to this President, threats against his life are up 400 percent from the amount the Secret Service received for Bush. All this before making any real changes to their beloved Bushies policies.
Nothing will change or make the RW fringe like him but, it sure wouldn‘t take much to make one of them go off the deep end and do something horrible.
Considering what he is up against, I am willing to give him more time.
Ryan, please consider this from a comment on Immoral Minority:
“The Nobel Peace Prize is an award presented to either an individual or an organization in accordance with Alfred Nobel’s living will. Alfred Nobel, creator of the five Nobel Prizes, was a Swedish inventor and industrialist. He disposed the Nobel Peace Prize in his will to be awarded to “the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.” The Nobel Peace Prize differs from the Nobel Prizes in literature, physics, chemistry, and medicine or physiology in that it may be presented not only to individuals, but also to organizations that are actively engaged in a process or effort that intends to promote world peace. The prize can be awarded for current efforts, rather than for having accomplished a goal or resolved an issue.
————————-
Please read the last sentence several times so that you get an understanding of what this prize means.”
==========
We have a tough row to hoe, but his speeches last year and this year give an indication that he’s trying to make a difference in world peace. The Cairo speech alone went quite a long way to repair the US image abroad.
Not exclusively ‘my’ point, but ‘a’ point.
It’s dawning even on those predisposed to like the guy that when it comes to burning issues the first black president of the United States truly hates to come down on one side or the other. He dreads making powerful people mad. He won’t stand up for his own people when they’re being savaged by the nutball right, edges them out, then has his press secretary claim that they jumped of their own accord. This may impress the peaceniks of Oslo, but from the American perspective he’s looking like a wimp.
Obama’s Afghan policy evolved on the campaign trail last year as a one-liner designed to deflect charges that he was a peacenik on Iraq. Not so, he cried. The Global War on Terror was being fought in the wrong place. His pledge was to hunt down and “kill” Osama bin Laden.
Once ensconced in the Oval Office Obama, invoking “bipartiship”, instantly nailed a white flag to the mast by keeping on Robert Gates, Bush’s secretary of defense.
He formed a foreign policy team mostly composed of Clinton-era neo-liberal hawks, headed by Hilary Clinton and Richard Holbrook. His next step was to eject the US commander in Afghanistan, Gen. David McKiernan, and install Gen. Stanley McChrystal, best known for running the assassination wing of the military’s joint special-operations command. (JSOC). Then he ordered 17,000 new US troops to be deployed to Afghanistan.
It was a fine exhibition of Obama’s eerie skill – also demonstrated in the politicking over health reform – in foreclosing his own range of choices and allowing opponents to coalesce and seize the initiative. If, on his second day in office he’d announced a full and complete review of US aims in Afghanistan, with no option left off the table he’d have had some purchase on the situation. But the months drifted by and finally the worsening situation forced a review of Afghan policy, precisely when Obama’s poll numbers were dropping, the war lobby heartened and the liberals already dejected by Obama’s surrender to Goldman Sachs and Wall Street and disastrous efforts in the health fight.
It’s all much too late for any sensible policy review. There have been two moments in the last 40 years when life might have improved for ordinary Afghans, particularly women. The first came with the the reforming left regime of the late 1970s, destroyed by the warlords with US backing. The second arrived with the US eviction of the Taliban in 2001-2, which was welcomed by many Afghans. But at this stage in the game, simply by definition, no American intervention overseas can be anything other than a ghastly disaster, usually bloodstained. But already the US had too many chits out to the warlords of the Northern Alliance. The US “nation building” apparat is irreversibly corrupt – with a network of $250,000 a year consultancies, insider contracts, and beyond that a de facto stake in the drug industry now supply most of the West’s heroin and opium.
There’s no possible light at the end of any tunnel. The robot war via Predator missiles and other instruments in the arsenal infuriates all Afghans, as wedding parties are blown to bits every weekend. With more troops and mercenaries now in Afghanistan than during the Russian military presence at its peak, there’s zero chance for America playing a long-term constructive role in Afghanistan. The US presence is just a recruiting poster for the Taliban.
Last week Obama invited Republicans as well as Democrats to the White House for further review of the options. Obama has let events overtake him, exactly as he allowed the health policy debate to spin out of his control in the summer and early fall. He’ll shoot for some sort of lethal semi-compromise on reinforcements, thus feeding the right and angering his liberal supporters. A year from now he’ll be paying the penalty in the mid-term elections, just as Clinton did.
I’m willing to give our President longer than a few months to repair the damage of 8 years…keep it civil please.
For those who accuse Obama of not accomplishing anything, and thus being unworthy of the Nobel Prize.
We are keeping in mind that Obama is the first American President with any meaningful non-European ancestors or culture -
That is a Very Great Accomplishment, in a very racist nation -
That he successfully and elegantly ran against an avalanche of hatred, racism and death threats, and continues to have to live in that atmosphere of sewage, with grace and aplomb –
That his election committee and his party did not cheat him into office -
That contrary to his successor Obama was democratically elected -
That in the face of the history of the Republican Parties criminal activities is a Very Great Accomplishment.
I disagree totally with his wars (they are now his) but he has class, and intelligence. And being a classy, intelligent, successful black person is this country is a Very Great Accomplishment.
Perhaps that is what the Prize was given for as much as for the rest of the classy, intelligent world getting to flipping off the RepoTaliban.
Can’t wait to see The Colbert Report tonight and see if Stephen Colbert does a bit on all the RepuTaliban freaks who are upset about this. Idiots.
I wished I could have stayed out of the the people jumping on this even before the president had a chance to think about it ,but the right wingers repub’s made it impossible. I defend President Obama for why he received this award.Just as I defended Bush before I found out he lied to us about the Iraqi war.It is really disheartening to hear people say they are glad we lost all the jobs the Olympics would have bought to this country or at least the state of IL..As people traveled to Chicago they would have spent money every where.This just tells every one what the republicans stand for and it is not for helping Americans as shown by how joyful they were about the loss of so many jobs and money for a lot of people.I just hope the voters remember that when voting in the 2010 elections
A Refreshingly Strong Statement from the DNC
Yes!
Let’s hope they start supporting their democratically elected paety leader, with more energy than they did Carter or Clinton, or have Obama, up till now.
A special thanks to Zim from Oz for being the first to break the news about the Nobel Peace award. It was great to wake up to the news. Oh those Aussies are always there watching our backs.
It’s like Senator XYZ (R) stating that under no circumstances have they EVER said [whatever] and then a 10-second Google search reveals 100,000 instances where they have DEFINITELY said whatever they are denying. Buncha idiots.
I sure hope this gives the Dems some backbone to stand up to the Repugnants.
Apologies all – Snoskred is in the process of removing all traces of the troll, and replies to the troll.
Please remember we have comment guidelines regarding trolls – you can read all the comment guidelines by clicking on the comment guidelines tab at the top of the blog. A short reminder re trolls –
Engaging trolls in conversation generally pumps them up with all kinds of goofy brain chemicals that make them behave even worse, as they revel in stressing out the community. So, please do not to feed the trolls. If they are ignored, they usually go away. If you feed them (post in response to their post) it only makes the problem worse, and upsets the people you like.
If anyone does feed a troll, or respond to an inappropriate post, I will need to delete their responses to the troll as well as the troll itself. This makes more of a clean up chore for me. So please abide by the ‘no feeding trolls’ rule.
Sorry I didn’t get to it earlier – been a busy morning at Chez Snoskred.
I remember the speech our President Obama gave in Germany , before the election. I was so proud of him that day, as I am today.
What a change from a former president who was so smug, cocky, and a few other adjectives I can think of to describe him.
We can all be proud today of President Obama.
I ran into a neighbor this morning – a moderate Republican. My neighbor was very excited about about the news that President Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize.
That was enough today, for me, to show the strides we have made in a few short months.
Doesn’t fix all our problems or shut up all the snots on the right and left out there…
But it’s something I can measure as progress…
Yes, we can…
and we will…
Congratulations Mr President.
Congratulations America.
Our President has done alot. Need to go to the White House web-site and see the list of his accomplishments. The wars, health care, dadt, prisons and economy are big issues that are not go to be resolved in a few months. This will take help from the Congress and our Elected officials to help resolve these issues. We are not seeing from much from the Repubs and the Blue Dogs are shameful. He is having a time trying to fill his cabinet.
Unfortunately, it isn’t only the Repubs that want to see our President fail; there are some Demoncrats who also relish the idea. It is also, unfortunate, that other Countries can see what the Americans here neglect to want to see. We have a good President; not perfect and I don’t always agree with his take on certain issues; however, I will stand behind him.
Congratulations, President Obama!!
Snoskred: thank you for the extra’s you do and btw, I did not feed the trolls, but if most of us on here have the same points of view and the viewers of MSNBC, for example, are similar in politics, and faux news has their “pinheads” that listen without question…then how are we ever going to get the other side to participate in a dialogue and to see where we’re coming from and why we have the logical common sense that we do???
#104 Lacy Lady: I am glad you remember that event in Berlin.
When I saw then Candidate Obama stepping down from the Sieges Saeule, the Victory Column, unaccompanied by an entourage, to address the very large crowd, I believe I understood the courage of this slender man. Willing to lay his life on the line to achieve his goal he eschewed the usual phalanx of security to take that long lonely walk to the podium. He had my admiration then, he has it now, for he took a great risk with his personal safety.
I wonder just how much impact that walk, that courage, that speech had upon the Selection Committee in Oslo.
I happen to be on a planet that is celebrating two great things today…
thanks samper! happy birthday Bo. i got a letter from the President in my e-mail and replied that i was very happy and proud of him and Mrs. Obama. what a lovely thing to happen to our sweet, smart and hardworking president.
For the first time in more than half a century we have a president in the US who is a good man, an intellectual man, a man capable of actually doing the job, and the world recognizes this. The stunning and apoplectic reaction of his opponents speaks to his strength.
One is reminded that Desmond Tutu was awarded the Peace Prize for his efforts to end apartheid rule in S. Africa, long before he accomplished that aim. It is apparent, that the Norse folks have here, contemplated the potential effect President Obama may have on the course of world history in the next 7.25 years and have done what they think was right and appropriate.
Were I a republican, I might think twice at this and wonder even whether or not it might be more productive in the long run to work with this man and try to sway his intentions with solid arguments, instead of useless random
calumny. But republicans make their own reality so I am told. So there is no reason to expect them to realize that the reality that does in fact exist outside their small minded view of things, will ultimately prevail. You can fool people, but you can’t fool nature.
Huzza for the President of the United States!
Disagreement is always allowed here, as long as everyone keeps it civil. It’s hard to do when issues are so laden with emotion. Sometimes it’s good to hear dissenting opinion. It makes us think through why we think what we think, and allows us the opportunity to change our minds, or reinforce our previous opinions. And it keeps us from being lazy.
So. That said, we march on.
Further proof that the conservatives and crazy right wingers who are currently running the republican party will continue to lose and alienate the intelligent, moderate, thinking members of their party, like your neighbor. And with all the garbage they have been spewing lately, they have NO hope of getting support from independents. Here’s what Michael Steele, Chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC) sent around as an email early today, Fri, 10/9/09. Sorry for injecting the horrid tone & language of it here, but it’s important for everybody to realize how easily folks may be falling into language & rhetoric intentionally spread by the RNC. Well, here: see for yourselves. The language in the latter part of this RNC email sounds just exactly like the John Birch Society of yesteryear (well, maybe the Birchers aren’t strictly yesteryear, here in AK, since in AK they’ve devolved & continue to exist as the Alaska Independence Party). Notice Steele’s, & the RNC’s, talking points. And this email is mild, as far as the language in Steele’s emails goes…
Here’s the RNC email:
“Dear —-,
I’m sure you’ve heard the news — Barack Obama has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. It’s a stunning, if not truly surprising, indication of just how meaningless a once honorable and respected award has become.
What has President Obama actually accomplished? It is unfortunate that the president’s star power has outshined tireless advocates who have made real achievements working towards peace and human rights.
Even the normally fawning media have expressed shock at the clearly political and unmerited award. But the Democrats clearly see it differently, with DNC spokesman Brad Woodhouse stating “the Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists — the Taliban and Hamas this morning — in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.”
Like most Americans, the DNC can’t think of one achievement that the president has accomplished, so they resort to their predictable response and standard playbook of demonizing anyone who disagrees with them.
First they call Americans concerned over health care “rabid extremists” and “angry mobs.” Now, when challenged to answer the question of what the president has accomplished, Democrats are lashing out calling Republicans terrorists. That type of political rhetoric is shameful.
—-, the Democrats and their international leftist allies want America made subservient to the agenda of global redistribution and control. And truly patriotic Americans like you and our Republican Party are the only thing standing in their way.
Help our Party spread the word about the Obama Democrats’ dangerous naivete and power grab. Please support GOP elected officials as they work to hold the Democrats accountable to the American people for their failed policies and irresponsible rhetoric by making a contribution of $25, $50, $100, $500 or $1,000 to the Republican National Committee today.
Your gift will also help support the recruitment and election of principled candidates who will defeat the Democrats in 2009 and 2010 and promote policies that put America first.
Sincerely,
Michael S. Steele
Chairman, Republican National Committee
Perhaps one has to live ouitside America to appreciate the magnitude of the change that’s taken place. With Obama’s election, America has dramatically changed direction. Yes, America is still engaged in two wars (not of Obama’s making). But the country is a mother f***ing aircraft carrier that takes time to turn. What’s important is that the process of turning has begun.
This is an award celebrating Americans as well because a decisive majority of Americans voted for Obama based on his proimses to engage rather than confront, to discuss rather than preach, to listen rather than pontificate. To put it crudely, America is now out to woo rather than rape. The rest of the world appreciates this change and the Nobel Committee has correctly gauged this appreciation.
I say to Americans: Instead of looking a gift horse in the mouth, accept this honor gracefully, humbly and resolve to support your president in fulfilling the promise of this prize.
It was an amazing day. I kept thinking how proud I am of our President and how proud I am to be an American with him as our leader. In the face of so much criticism from the right, he has maintained his calm demeanor and continued to seek to solve things, big and small, with diplomacy. I think that is what the world sees and is a large part of the reason he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
What an honor! Congratulations to President Obama.
I heard one local commenator say this morning that it is very appropriate for him to receive the award because he has, in a very short time, shown the rest of the world that the United States wants to lead and be a working partner in solving some of our most important global concerns. He has once again given people hope that we can make changes that will make our lives better and more peaceful.
That goes right to the heart of the criteria of who should receive the Nobel Peace Prize. What a great choice they made. I’ve been smiling all day.
And the statement from the DNC is just icing on the cake. Finally they are standing up to the nutty rhetoric from the repubs, many of whom showed just how petty and short-sighted they are when they made such rude comments on Friday.
Yes, it was an amazing day. President Obama has accomplished a great deal in the last 8 months in foreign policy. He has reset US foreign policy, particularly with Russia and with the Muslim world. He has defused border tensions in Europe by removing missile systems from Poland and the Czech Republic. He is bringing troops home from Iraq. He has called for global reductions in nuclear arms. He has shifted the debate about nuclear non-proliferation, including Iran, to the United Natives, creating a global diplomatic effort on Iran and North Korea. In these actions, in redirecting US foreign policy, Obama has received the approval of most of the planet. The Nobel committee has handed our President a substantial recognition for these tremendous positive changes in US foreign policy, and provided him a tool for future accomplishments.
What a positive change from the warmongering of the so-called “Christian Right” over the previous 8 years. The extreme right drove our country, its foreign policy and its economy right into the ground. All that is left in the GOP is hyperpartisanship and the anger of having been driven from power.
Perhaps…
But I see some change at home -from inside.
Not enough yet, but a start…
Your aircraft carrier image is wonderful!
We allowed ourselves to squander the solidarity we had here , after 9/11, as well as the goodwill from outside the US.
We have much work to do to knit ourselves back up again…
It’s not going to happen overnight…
I am pleased the Nobel committee saw fit to give a nod to the man we hired to man-the-bridge as we work our way through this.
It’s awful trying to get things done over the cacophony of naysayers from all sides…
The older I get, the tireder I get of folks who won’t join in unless they get everything THEY want and work to denigrate and destroy works in progress for all of us…sigh.
We needed this pat on the back to remind us of the value of what we are trying to do…
Back to work!
I don’t believe there was much question this award was a certainty as soon as Obama was elected. The collective sigh of relief from the world said it all. Fear goes a long way in scaring the crap out of people. Fear, that is, of napalm falling on women and kids because a swaggering ruler doesn’t like the way someone parts their hair or invents similar phony excuses in order to rip off other’s stuff, like oil. The committee summarized it all nicely by indicating, the earth’s people now have a “Hope for a better future”. A close examination of skeptic mentality toward this peace prize is intriguing. I.e.: Taliban, Hamas, Focus on The Family zealots, war mongers, hatemongers, etc. Like the peas in a pod they are, all think alike. Figures.
129 Krubozumo Nyankoye and 133 akmuckraker, well said, both of you.
Hearing other views is important without having to suffer through the drivel on Fox.
KN, one food chain in the UK dropped all advertising on Fox there, so your idea will hopefully take hold in the US if we work on it. They deserve a total ban of advertisers, IMO.
Ya know, it may take the American public to stop Rupert Murdock from destroying our country from the inside out. Look what he has done in a very short period of time.
He only became a citizen in order to own tv media here, and he’s only been a US (cough) citizen since 1985! 24 short years ago.
Fake News is less than 13 yrs old. Look at how he is manipulating and influencing some of our fellow citizens, look at how he is working at dividing our country. He tabloid sensationalizes news to grab attention so he can claim the highest ratings. Ratings maybe worthy of a ‘tabloid’ intersperse with human interest tv network, they should not be a valid ratings claim for a ‘news’ network.
Now that I understand more of what he’s about and up to I’m angry, and it’s directed at what I think is the #1 enemy behind all this hate discord. He controls most of our politicians. He’s driving our country backward.
The public needs to take him down and kick him out. It’s not enough to just boycott Glenn Beck advertisers. We need to boycott Fake News advertisers.
Someone needs dig up dirt so we can charge him with treason, take away his US citizenship, fine him big bucks, shut down or sell fake news and his US owned newspapers. Have him kicked out of our country. Banned. Period. I don’t want his influence here. It’s poison.
There is a boatload of background resource info on him at the below link. This Aussie is worried for our country.
“This has me thinking is Rupert Murdoch doing it again?
Has he pretended to be non-combative, almost empathetic to Barack Obama and of course Australia’s new Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, waited until they were elected and is his next big challenge to have them thrown out in disgrace by convincing people of some great outrage that is simply blown out of all proportion?
There are a number of indicators that Murdoch is trying to poison the democratically elected governments public profile in both these countries, not wait for elections and let the people decide and by extension destroy democracy once again. Maybe this time he’ll finish off once and for all rule by the people for the people and make it rule by whatever the hell Fox News wants.”
“Fox News Network – The Crowning Jewel for manipulating the public
Established on October 7 1996, the Fox News channel was designed to make use of the most eye-catching, attention grabbing graphics and unleash the adrenalin of its viewers to a high level, unseen in existing network news.
From the beginning, FNC has placed heavy emphasis on visual presentation. Graphics were designed to be colorful and attention grabbing and to allow people to get the main points of what was being said even if they could not hear the host, through the use of on-screen text summarizing the position of the interviewer or speaker and “bullet points” when a host was giving commentary.
Interspersed throughout the Fox shows are genuine ‘human interest’ stories intended to calm, to bring that adrenalin level right back down, alleviate some of the shock and outrage built during the talk show host segments. Fox News Extra is designed to take its viewers back to a place they can either see themselves in, or show such heart warming stories, that the viewer finds themselves feeling a sense of empathy, of connection with the people, places or subjects in the stories. Regular people often doing extraordinary things.
Fox News also created the “Fox News Alert,” which interrupted regular programming when a breaking news story occurred.”
Obama rocks. And happy birthday to Bo.
