Welcome and thanks to a new advertiser! You’ll notice the new ad with the yellow daffodils over in the side bar for Jan Porterfield’s watercolors.

Jan Porterfield moved to Alaska in 1988, where she taught early childhood education at the University of Alaska, Anchorage and later directed a parent co-op preschool.   She stopped working in 2001, after a cancer diagnosis.  Jan started painting seriously after that and became quite profecient over the next 6 years.  She had several successful Anchorage shows at Stephan’s Fine Art and one at Snow City Cafe.

This web site was created by her husband after her death as a way to share her art with others. The proceeds from the shop, after Cafe Press’ share, are donated directly to a fund at the Alaska Community Foundation . The income from the fund is used to support patients with long term illnesses, early childhood education, and other charitable causes that were important to Jan.  This fund supports cancer patients, hospice, early childhood education, and other causes that were important to Jan.   Both before and after her cancer diagnosis, Jan focused on the many positive things in her life — friends, family, working with young children — and wanted this charitable fund to bring a little of that happiness into the lives of others.

I hope you enjoy browsing the many beautiful images and products in the online store HERE. A link will remain active over there in the side bar.

From the last thread because it aggrevates me so much.

The law is irrelevant in AK. The list of incidents where the law has been flaunted and run over is legend. The legislature of the state is spineless and self-serving.

The email issue is just another case of hoping it passes the public by. If it costs too much for the state of Alaska to use email, they have a piss-poor system of cost-benefit and should go back to quill and pen. The whole story is a LIE and anyone with 1% of technical smarts knows it. Instead we see the government pretending to comply when it is obvious there is no intention to do so. Were there an actual legal requirement (as in a court finding), I can assure you that the emails would be forthwith.

My observation over the past year is that the state does not provide for it’s citizens or care about them. The citizens themselves either don’t care, are compromised by other graft, are stupid, or are too weak. Any state that is so stupid as to destroy their own fishing for short term gain is insane. All I see is more hand wringing and more graft. Any state that freezes out it’s own citizens has another agenda. Sarah was probably stating the obvious when she said that the places weren’t worth supporting and the people should leave. That seems to be the real policy and it is working.

Alaska is on its way to becoming an example of what went wrong in …. pick your subject: global warming, fisheries, health care, education … whatever. It will be a failed state like CA. That is the Republican legacy backed up by the spineless DINOs who don’t speak up and don’t do anything.

Someday the hand in the pocket is going to come up empty. What then?

Sarah Palin is a symptom and a distraction.

    Great story.

    AKM
Great artwork by Jan. I like the way you always take the blog in different directions. Sometimes we get a little wrapped up in the negative & the ever so irritating politicians & thier ever so irritating shenanigans.

I think it’s interesting that a book that has not yet been released supposedly written by an ex governor known not to be very truthful would even be on the best seller list in the first place.

  13. 13
Say No to Palin in PoliticsNo Gravatar says:

So, was one of those Blackberry that Scarah always had in hand State owned? and if so has anyone asked Dean Dawson if Scarah turned it in? Even state business done on her personal blackberry is state owned and public record. What was done about those documents?

Dawson should also be asked what has happened with the “transferring and retaining yahoo email data to another medium” business. Was it ever done? He said this over a year ago.

The state court of Alaska said they (Blackberries could be reviewed for any public business. So were they, or are they? Or did someone drop the ball on this Judges ruling?

    http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2008180084_palinemail15.html

“The opinion, by assistant Attorney General Julia Bockmon, also addressed personal e-mail and cellphone accounts. Personal communications are not public records, but state business records on personal devices are, she wrote. Personal call records and e-mails could be reviewed by a state official or court to locate any that concern public business, she wrote.

No one in the Palin administration could say if the governor is saving her Yahoo e-mails. If she’s emptying her e-mail trash, they are zapped from Yahoo’s storage system within days or at the longest, months, Yahoo says.

“If you are asking do we have those e-mails, then the answer is no,” said Anand Dubey, director of the state’s Enterprise Technology Services. “We don’t control Yahoo or Gmail or Hotmail or anything like that.”

Dean Dawson, state-records manager, is working on an e-mail-archive system for state employees, who tend to want to hang onto e-mail forever, he said. E-mail records should be kept as long as paper records of the same type — for instance, three years for general correspondence, he said. Top executives such as commissioners and the governor often must keep records longer, under state schedules.

So what about archiving Yahoo e-mails that concern public business?

“That’s kind of the gray fuzzy area right now,” Dawson said. “I think they would be transferring that data to another medium and then retaining it as a public record.”

Since this is an open thread, I have a consumer alert to put out.
If any of you know of anyone thinking about buying a corn burning stove, this is for them.
DO NOT, i repeat, do not buy a Bixby!
We made the mistake of purchasing a Bixby 3 yrs. ago. When they work, they’re
great, they heat the whole house(downstairs). The problem is it’s just one thing after another with these stoves & the company will not stand behind them. For what we paid for that piece of crap, we could’ve had 2 new energy efficient furnaces. It has never worked right & right now I’m waiting for a dealer from another state to come & fix it. This will be his 4th trip down here at $90 a visit. I am writing letters to the state att gen., the BBB, & this winter, with a little help from my friends, I’m making a little clip for you-tube.
So this is a head’s up. Maybe I can keep some other poor soul from losing all that money & their sanity. Bixby= no good! I should mention, they are made in Minnesota, by the Keebler elves I think.

Really beautiful paintings. I’m putting together a holiday shopping guide for my local news site and I’ll add this store to my “online shopping” section. Maybe we can generate a few sales from Western New Yorkers.

3 years ago today was the big WNY October Storm. I’m not EVEN going to grumble about having to turn on the furnace today. 3 years ago I was without it and electricity for 10 days. This morning it was a welcomed sound to hear it kick in.

And Just Say No @17 – I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s the reason. Facebook can only go so far. It’s already been stretched waaaay too thin.

Aussie @20 – Everyone’s been chuckling about that one but somehow, the Palinistas don’t see it as a goof. Go figure!

And, as a last note before I head back to work :

I have a weird phone situation going on. 3am calls with dead air. My answering machine kicking in even tho the phone hasn’t rang. Odd background noise on the machine that won’t disconnect until I unplug it from the wall. And then the phone ringing and me picking up to hear the operator telling me that the call I’m trying to place won’t go through even though I’ve not made a call. I’m accustom to this being a strange house with lights that turn on , music boxes that start on their own, doors opening , tvs that turn on and then flip through stations but, I’m tellin’ you right now that if I end up picking up the phone to hear my dead Mother or that voice from the movie, Mothman, I’m going pee and then crumple into a heap.

He has done more for the younger generation than maybe even he realizes: He has been and shall continue to be the pebble thrown into the pond of future generations, for the dragon slayers will continue to widen the circles of his teachings.

On the pre-eve of 9/11, Obama had to go and tell everyone in the Nation about this/his health care he wants passed for some supposed good of our Nation. Well I now know that Obama is trying to destroy our Nation as we stand and watch.

    1. Taking out what we know.
    2. Taking away our pride.
    3. To make the Nation conform to his will.
    4. To make the Nation fear for our lives no matter how young or old we are.
    5. To become a unit, not individuals standing together for the greater good.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? 9/11, WWII, WWI, Hitler, Stalin, Lenin, Che. Do you want this? Guess what …. it is happening again and this time it was voted in with open arms.

We have LOST our Freedoms. We have LOST our Independence. We are LOSING our way of LIFE!

Sarah Palin seems to be the ONLY one standing up for the people of this Nation. WHERE ARE THE OTHERS?! Where are those we ELECTED to stand up for the Rights, Liberties and Freedoms of us, the Individual?

If this bill passes, those who voted it in will soon realize that they are not special. They are nothing. These “individuals” will be let go, by the American people and for our Freedom!

Go ahead Congressmen and Senators of the United States. Go ahead Senators and Legislators of the States as well. Also let us remind those who hold ANY political office. Go against the people, the people will go against you.

Who is willing to stand up to this? Sarah Palin is just one. Who will make it two? Then four? Then eight? Who wants to stand?

It is so freaky how they can take a simple thing and distort it and make it sound so dangerous!

Have you looked at the site? There is much more of the same, if you can stomach it!

We here over and over how the death threats against President Obama have increased almost daily. I also read somewhere that the Secret Service is stretched thing and working longer hours. Who is out there monitoring some of these websites. We know they can do almost anything with modern technology and laws put into place by Bush, but are there enough people who can monitor them and then take action against the ones that are breaking laws?

BuffaloGal……….coming from VT and having grown up in a 200+ year old house, I’m toooooooo familiar with odd happenings and things that go bump in the night. If that was my phone/machine doing that, it would have gone through the nearest window long before now! Ditto on calling the phone company – the might have an explanation for you.

There’s conversation going on over at Bree Palin’s site about Shannyn posting on her FB page that something is about to break wide open. Lots of ideas being tossed out, but no one knows for sure, but expect that if Shannyn has gone that far in her statement, it is bound to be a doozy.

Went to the C4P site for the first time today. There is still a button there for donating to SarahPAC. Sure would be nice to know what happened to that other fund. Are things like that posted on the Alaska state site?

Spouse is a phone manNo Gravatar says:

    Buffalogal @#25

Spouse says call the phone company. This is what he say’s:

“In simple terms the telephone is a loop from the Central Office (phone Co.) to your telephone and back again. Weird things happen when the loop is completed the wrong way.
It could be a bad card in the Central Office. This can complete the loop and provide voltage which could activate your answering machine and the dead air that you hear.
It could be loop to ground. Tip side causes your phone to call other people with out you dialing. It could also cause the central office to provide voltage and activate the answering machine. ring side ground generates lots of static on the line”

For the record, I have absolutely no idea what any of that means (I was just channeling spouse). When I asked what tip side and ring side are he did give me some string/tin can example but, hey, I can’t even check my messages on my cell phone, so it was completely lost on me. Spouse also says that if, after working with the phone Co., your mother still calls – all bets are off. Also, don’t answer the iron ;-)

Headline tells it all. I hope the employee gets lots of money, but I also hope the owner gets some pretty stiff fines and some jail time – one can only hope.

How does one access http://www.standupforournation.com? When I try, I get an error message:

“The server http://www.standupforournation.com at Website Development requires a username and password.

    What does all this mean?

Here is an interesting little story that gave me a little ‘ education ‘ on the topic.
On a couple of occasions in the Chat Room the subject or the name ‘ ditchweed ‘ came up. people who were more knowledgeable than I were were talking.
People who are ‘ justa farmers ‘ ;-) knew what they were talking about.
I learned a little bit more myself as well today.

Hey GG2B, would you post the link to her web site. People are having trouble getting to what you posted. Thanks!

Buffalo Gal…….would you know if this phone call thing happens during the day while you are gone? It could be the line in the house (think mouse chewing) or the line coming to the house from the pole (think wasp nest in box at pole).

The wasp scenario is what happened to us, we started getting calls that would go scratchy after 10 min, sometimes 1 ring then nothing, sometimes half rings then nothing, sometimes calls didn’t come through, intermittent like, until finally a dead line.

With our phone company any problem inside the house would cost us if they fixed it. We had purchased extra line to house protection so that would be free. So frugal me, I set out to see what I could do before calling them.

I checked the house line at the box outside the house, it has a phone plug, you unplug all house phones then plug one into the outside box, if static or dead it’s in the line to the house not anything inside the house. Before it went dead I’d checked all phone plugs individually by unplugging all but one and having someone call the house to test the line. They all seemed fine. Our lines mostly run across the basement rafters so I could have traced each line to find mouse chew spots and then splice or replace the line. But, it was the wasp nest, the repair guy said it happens all the time, they carry the wasp spray all summer just for this, nice easy job huh.

Any way, something else you can try is unplug all the phones, then plug them all back in. I read that this does some sort of reset, I guess maybe if for instance a lightning storm put a static charge in the line? I don’t know, lol.

Justa, glad the hubby is feeling better, your a good woman.

JoJobo, yes, they believe in breaking a child’s ‘rebellious’, ‘unyielding’ spirit with corporal punishment, beat them into submission. And they wonder why people grow up mad, mean, have mental and hate issues. Those raised that way tend to raise their own kids that way too. Some go opposite tho, but lacking good parenting skills, end up with spoiled rotten uncontrollable brats.

    Justafarmer,

I just read the farmer protest arrest story, sheesh, lol.

“Hemp, however, is not a drug and has no capacity to get someone stoned, the farmers pointed out. Wayne Hauge and Will Allen, farmers from North Dakota and Vermont respectively, brought shovels and seeds to the protest, where they were joined by representatives of Vote Hemp, which advocates for federal legislation that would allow states to craft their own hemp policies.

Currently eight states — Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Montana, North Dakota, Vermont, and West Virginia — allow industrial hemp production or research, but federal law, which requires nearly-impossible-to-obtain-permits to grow hemp, trumps those state laws. A bill introduced by Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) and Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) would allow states to craft their own policies.”

The “ditchweed” is actually hemp that has reseeded itself year after year since WWII. Kids think it’s free marijuana but there’s not enough THC to get anymore of a buzz than smoking cornsilk (hands up mudpups who grew up on a farm and tried THAT!)
Here’s a link to one of our Kentucky newspapers about trying to move ahead on the hemp issue.

I hope some progress can be made because I KNOW I can grow hemp. IT’s a darned weed and I can for sure grow weeds!

Justa, yeppers, we could grow real good weeds here too. And nope, not a farm kid who grew up tryin ditch weed, but did hear the term, up there in ND. Is that what they mixed with oregano in an attempt to pass for the real stuff? lol, that was like 7th grade to me. I was too much of a straight laced guilt ridden church goer to even try anything like that back then, but the information was interesting, and I did take note.
