Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Palin Says Give, Give, Give til it Hurts.

I know what you’ve all been thinking.  Yeah, there’s SarahPAC, and yes there’s Sarah Palin’s legal defense fund, The Alaska Fund Trust, and you’ve donated to both.  You may have even donated to the campaign.  But you’ve been frustrated because you want to find a fresh new way to open your wallet in the name of  Sarah Palin.  You want to give MORE.  If there was only a way…

Well, happy days are here again.  Now you can “Stand Up for Our Nation!”

“There will be an announcement about it coming up,” Palin associate Tim Crawford said Wednesday.

E-mails are currently going out to the favored faithful to help form a coalition. She is primed, ready and now forming a national organization called “Stand Up for Our Nation.” Exactly what it’s standing for is unclear.

Presumably the coalition of the faithful will be some kind of leadership PAC, which will keep her foot wedged in the door of national politics and expand her influence regarding “things she’s passionate about.”  But we don’t know that for sure because nobody, not even Meg Stapleton, is talking.  Keep refreshing that Facebook page.

This is all timed, of course, to coincide with the launch of her book “Going Rogue.”  And a new industry is born.

A quick check of the Alaska Fund Trust website reveals that despite the six-figure speaking engagements like the recent one in Hong Kong, and despite the multi-million dollar book deal, and all the other opportunities opening up for our ex-governor now that she’s shed that pesky day job, Palin still has her hand out.

Yes, the Alaska Fund Trust, which has not been updated to reflect her new employment status, still says it is designed to help the “governor” pay off her legal bills.   As of today, you can still click on the site and find this heart-wrenching plea.

Governor Palin has incurred more than half a million dollars in personal debt defending her official actions as Governor. You can help by donating to the Alaska Fund Trust today!

aft

Donors are presumably encouraged to ignore the fact that the ethics complaint against Palin claiming that the fund itself is illegal resulted in a report obtained by the Associated Press which states that the receipt of gifts through this fund is “improper.”

And by the way, donors will be relieved that despite this crushing legal debt, there seems to be a lot of new construction going on, expanding the Palin’s large lakeside home with the float plane dock.

Did I mention that they take all major credit cards?

The trust fund was set up on 04/22/2009, not real sure when they started taking people’s money. I started sending emails starting in July which by my calculations would have been the end of the first quarter.

    8. Will there be any disclosure of contributions and expenses?

Yes. The Trustee will disclose on a quarterly basis the contributions as well as categories of expenses with amounts.

If nobody was watching You… why wouldn’t you just put ‘ some ‘ of this Old Money and turn it into the New Money with New Grifter Fund. You never told anybody how much you had… so how can someone say you took some of it.

Over @ CD’s a while back she had a post up about this, the report from July was based solely on the violations that were obvious to Tom Daniel from the Trust’s website, not from the actual papers that have to be filed to start the trust. He was being “kind” and giving Palin an easy out: don’t take the money, disolve the trust and no trouble. So she keeps the thing up and running. Daniels didn’t base his report on the paper work filed to start the trust, the trust is actually not a legal defense fund, but a general fund with no specific rules about how the money has to be spent or anything limiting Palin’s access to it, like Palin claimed. The fund is completely illegal according to the atty that contributed to the blog. It’s explained much better there, I’m having a hard time linking right now, but here’s the title, it’s worth a read :)

#16: “Is it true that the state of Alaska will not pay legal expenses incurred by an official in the performance of his/her duties? That would be odd. Why would anyone ever want to hold public office in Alaska under those circumstances?”

No, that’s not true. The state of AK WILL pay legal expenses incurred by an official in the performance of his/her duties. The legislature appropriated a sum ($100,000?) of money to pay for her defense in Troopergate. Then, she was nominated as VP, and the McCain campaign advised her to not take the money and cover her own defense. I’m not sure what their reasons were.

So, she had to pay for the troopergate defense. It isn’t clear if she really incurred (or needed to incur) defense costs for the other ethics complaints — there was probably a small cost for a couple of them (the ones she lost, or negotiated a settlement on), but not for most. But, that wasn’t a significant amount of money — the $500,000 she keeps quoting is troopergate.

Here’s a link to the state’s allocation of the costs — I couldn’t quickly find one discussing her $500,000 (or $600,000, as it’s sometimes reported). http://www.adn.com/palin/story/850854.html

Exactly WHAT do either of them DO besides pose for the cameras??????

Of course, the big difference is that Paris has gobs of family money to spend and SP just WANTS gobs of money. She’s willing to take it from anyone and anywhere, as long as she doesn’t have to actually work for it.

And this crew constantly complains about Democrats giving handouts to people who don’t deserve them. Can you say “hypocrite”? I know you can!

Oh, please, somebody make her stop. She’s making my head hurt. I can’t believe she has the gall to keep taking money from people when she quit her job, got millions for a book deal and who knows how much for that China gig. And now, when she has all those legal expenses, she’s doing more building on her already large house? She’s a thief for doing it, but the people who keep giving her money and fawning over her are just stupid.

#53 Enjay in E.MT…My understanding is that she can accept much larger amounts thru Scamming Our Nation. I’m not sure what or if there is a limit on how much people can donate. I would assume this is one of the reasons for this fund raiser.

Maybe Palin is just trying to one-up the ever barking Liz Cheney and her new non-profit “Keep America Safe.” At least, Liz can be powerfully eloquent in her totally disparaging and anti-charitable ways. Liz is kinda Sarah without the lipstick but with an far larger and more evil brain.

Kristan Cole is not a woman of her word. Everything she touches is tainted. Take a good look at what is continuing to go on at the Board of Agriculture. Her board seat expired but still she stays on to tidy up the corruption that has gone on for the last 2 years involving a lot of money going to places it should not have. When is someone going to stand up in this state and do a peoper investigation on Palin and Kristan Cole?

Sarah Palin is a downright BEGGAR. She will continue begging for free money till the law steps in to stop her. I find it so very hard to believe there are so many dumb and gullible people that send her money and do without themselves.

Wait – remodeling? Big addition to the house? Doesn’t she realize that now she’ll actually have to pay for her windows? Does Bristol realize this could be her chance to get away from Mommie-Dearest’s grasp? When Track returns will he fall in love with the nanny and give the Palins another child to ignore?
In any case, Palin is good for a laugh. I’ve kind of missed the old girl these last few weeks.

#77 Lacy Lady, actually that was John McLame’s daughter, Meghan. I’ve always felt kind of sorry for meg, she’s a little overweight & I’m sure her “skelator mom” has always made an issue of it. There is no way Meghan didn’t know what she was doing when she posted that picture, like most chubby girls she is well endowed. I think like sarah, she is screaming out for attention. Maybe that’s why mccain liked sarah, she reminded him of his daughter.

I finally found the quote I saw and lost regarding the “Stand Up For Our Nation” issue.

    From the WSJ Washington Wire:

““She wants to continue to be in a position to help causes dear to her heart and help people close to her,” said Fred Malek, a former fund-raiser for Sen. John McCain.”

A lot of commenters have pointed to the first half of that quote, but I think the real “tell” is the second half: “…and help people close to her…” In other words, SUFON is all about raising money for her own family and friends, since nothing else but personal gain seems to hold much long-term interest for her.

(This comment is cross-posted on the Going Rogue (VIDEO) Open Thread, with slightly different wording.)

This is posted at the Texas 4 Palin site,I think it adds insight. The original PAC was foolishly set up for Sarah to help other people, the new PAC will allow her to spend more of the money on herself!!

“”"Sarah Palin Stands Up For Our Nation

Cindy Adams was right about a new Sarah Palin coalition. From Michael M. Phillips at the WSJ’s Washington Wire:

Sarah Palin fans can expect to see a new Palin political organization surface as her memoir, “Going Rogue: An American Life,” hits the shelves next month.

“There will be an announcement about it coming up,” Palin associate Tim Crawford said Wednesday.
According to Phillips that’s all that Crawford, who is the treasurer of SarahPAC. was willing to say about Stand Up For Our Nation, which Adams said was to be the name of the endeavor.

Phillips tried to get some information our of Palin spokeswoman Meghan Stapleton, but Meg did not respond to his “numerous requests” for comment.

Why would Sarah Palin start another organization when she already has SarahPAC? That’s because all PACs are not created equal. There are several different types.

SarahPAC, like Mitt Romney’s Free & Strong America PAC and Mike Huckabee’s Huck PAC, is what is known as a leadership PAC. This type of political action committee allows a political figure to support other candidates. The funds it raises cannot be spent to directly support the owner of the PAC’s own campaign, but FEC rules governing leadership PACs do allow the politician to use PAC funds for travel and to make donations to other campaigns.

There are also issue PACs or ideological PACs, which are political action committees devoted to national issues. We would hazard a guess that this is the type of organization that Stand Up For Our Nation — if that is indeed to be its name — will be. Examples of this type of PAC are moveon, org, The Club For Growth and the National Rifle Association.

Issue PACs operate under a different set of rules than do leadership PACs. So from Sarah Palin’s point of view, this new PAC will work to her advantage because it expands her political options.
