Friends mourn legendary wolf biologist Gordon Haber.
I keep losing the embedded video when I update the post, so please click HERE and check out the KTUU story and view the video on the right sidebar.
The Alaska Wildlife Alliance’s website is HERE. Check it out. It’s a great site, including the recent article “A Sad Wolf Song” about the loss of Gordon Haber, and other articles under the “Wolves” tab that talk about the importance of wolves to the ecosystem.

Wolf Song of Alaska has an article that talks more about Adolph Murie, the first one to study the Toklat wolf pack of Denali, HERE.

And of course, please visit Dr. Haber’s own website HERE.
A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. – Albert Einstein.

I’m waiting! Hot cocoa in hand….
Wow, and I’ve visited Mudflats 1,206 times since last August, too!
Hello, hello. Reporting for duty and the stream is clear for the real estate report. Fingers crossed…
Wow, a clean, clear connection. No disturbing disconnects!!
Did anyone notice it worked fine last weekend when Shannyn was off? I checked out of curiosity. We’ll see tonight if a conspiracy’s affot.
Sorry. Afoot.
ad scribe, I think it’s the bandwidth, too many peeps listening to Shannyn and that causes the break ups.
I know zyggy. I just like rabble rousing.
Hi Mudpups!
Tough week for Shannyn. Too much negativity in Alaska. Lost Gordon Haber (sp) a wolf advocate and scientist.
So sorry Shannyn
Plane crash.
Shannyn loved his twitter feed, interviewed him re: aerial wolf hunting. “Phenomenal appreciation for nature.”
there are tears in her voice while talking about Gordon. =(
War against science! Wow!!
Mona Lisa,
Once in a while I listen to this speech. The Fired Up segment begins at minute 25:00.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32894539/ns/politics-health_care_reform/
very cool how she combined the science of wolf studies and the aerial killing and the teabaggers denying science.
Guest will be John Toppenberg (sp) and another guy who was on the Board of Game under Knowles.
Wolves were howling around when they found the plane crash. As though they knew what they lost. (Got a shiver from that).
Unbelievable….I hear the feed uninterrupted!
Mr. Toppenberg (sp) has a bear voice!
John does have a wonderful voice!
Hey… the stream is actually working!!!! WHOO-HOO!!!!
Alaska Wildlife Alliance is his organization…
Way too many nutcakes out there who are anti-science. Haber understood the natural equations. Tragic loss for wolves and all living things.
How important to human life are wolves?
Lynchpin in healthy ecosystems. Apex predator. Vital link in healthy ecosystems.
Enough about the stream. You guys are going to jinx it!
Need to educate public. Kill em all and let god sort em out does not work.
Credible scientists with the state are being forced to keep quiet.
S: Science is being thrown out for a political agenda.
T: Haber was independent, his funding was from an outside source, but he remained very independent.
John Toppenberg is the director of the Alaska Wildlife Alliance. I just made a donation to AWA in honor of Dr. Gordon Haber, and encourage others who wish to honor Dr. Haber’s legacy to do similarly. www dot akwildlif dot org
sorry, www dot akwildlife dot org … I forgot the ‘e’
Leo Keillor, on the Board of Game under Knowles is up next.
And the stream is brilliant tonight. Musical selections, too. Thanks Shannyn and Rishi!
Should have said Reeshman!
RIP Mr. Haber
Rishi, you rock! Connection is excellent, tonight!
thanks, mud puppies…
this is so damn hard.
A few of Gordon’s friends can’t come on because they can’t keep it together…it’s tough.
Thanks for being along for the ride…
xo
S
Yeah… huge shoutout to Reeshman… poor guy was raked over the coals a couple of weeks ago, we all salute you dude!
Hey Leo!
Shannyn, you’re doing an excellent job with such a heart-wrenching topic. Thank you for discussing the important work of Gordon Haber.
Shannyn we can tell it’s hard on you, but hang in there, this info needs to be told.
Leo and Dorothy Keeler are incredible wildlife photographers.
((Shannyn))
Leo Keillor has been involved in this fight for a long time.
Nature can be brutal but Leo says that political science not biological science is what controls the board of game.
They ignored Gordon because it was a political process.
Jay Hammond fired the head of the board of game for lying to him.
Keillor thinks that a public initiative to change the board of game to have the board follow science.
fyi, it’s Leo Keeler (correct spelling)
Not the rural subsistence that is the goal, but the hunter vee-eye-agra and the Alaska as a game farm people.
The only predators that go after the big males are human.
Johnny Johnson! Wow, Shannyn has gathered the best for this show.
great job Shannyn, and your voice isn’t filled with tears anymore.

Johnny Johnson a wildlife photographer is up next.
Friend of Gordon Haber for 41 years. Not always easy. He was passionate about wolves, not in it for the money, but the science. Manage ecosystems for integrity. Whole of nature was important.
One time, he had the flu, offered John his seat on a supercub. Sixteen wolves, going after a moose cow and calves. Wolves gave up and went away because it wasn’t worth a kick in the jaw.
He remembers howling with the wolves. Wishes other AKns could experience it.
I like the point he made that federal land belongs to ALL of us.
yo ho ho and… the feed is static clear! woohoo!
thanks for all those links… will check them out after the show is over… or during one of the many commercials.
This is Johnny, yes?
Difference between killing and hunting. Hunters get that.
Can’t have plenty all of the time. Humans are getting too numerous in AK for everyone to be hunting.
Johnny says there will be a gaping hole with loss of Haber.
A little FYI reminder:
John King, CNN State of the Union on Sunday morning will have segments from AK including an interview with Sen. Begich as King was in AK for a few days this week according to his Twitter page. http://twitter.com/JohnKingCNN
King also has some pictures, one of the Dark Horse Coffee Cafe on his Twitter page so will probably be talking to a few of the people I suspect from there about the economy, etc. like he has when visiting a different state each week on his show.
He has also posted about his trip to AK. You do not have to have a twitter page to read. Just click on the link to see the pictures and read his article. He mentions various people he spoke to including Gov Parnell.
Sounds like Haber’s death will help bring about more awareness of the wolves in AK.
Excellent connection here in WA.
Shannyn, so sorry for your loss. Your professionalism is amazing.
It’s not that there are too many hunters in AK, but that there are too many idiots like Sarah Palin who do not hunt but use animals as target practice. There’s a difference there that she’s too blessed stupid to get.
Geesh… the news gives too much press to neocons who speak in slivertongue saying “liberals are killing the economy.” Guess they forgot the 8 years that Shrub’s people spent dumping our economy down the terlet.
It’s like night and day, first Shannyn talking sense and then Fixed News spewing their neocon rhetoric…
Shannyn sez Gramian has a cute giggle when talking about Viagra-fueled hunters
Sharon from Phoenix is on now. Hopes that natives will get more chance to hunt than the people who are jacked up on hunting vee-eye-agra.
Areas and emergency hunts have been opened up, says Shannyn. Bacon was green in Homer by the time it got there. Subsistence is much more important in rural areas. Poaching salmon in rural areas this summer.
Shannyn says that rural priority makes sense, but constitution doesn’t agree.
Rural people are more aware, says Sharon.
Shannyn: long struggle. Will be tied up in courts either way.
guess my comment about Gramian went unto moderation
Yes…FOX News and promos for G. Gordon Liddy. The price we must pay for this precious 2 hours of progressive radio. Sigh…
Resources for the benefit of all AKns. Palin tried to change wildlife to assets instead of resources. Can’t have ballot initiatives about assets. Got shut down.
justa, did you use the vee-eye-agra spelling?
You are no bitch, Shannyn. You’ve always conducted yourself with class and grace and is why I tune in to you every week.
In northwest ak there are a lot less people and they get all of their meat from hunting and fishing. They also use hides and fur for parke roughs. The population in the area is low and they use what they kill. It is part of their culture and they all work together in the process. The white people in that area understand that, even though a lot of them use subsistence to survive.
I remember attending a lecture given by Mr. Haber back in the nineties while I was still in college at UAA. What a loss, and at such an unfortunate time in the fight to properly protect Alaska’s natural resources. My appreciation for the complexities of wildlife management began after that lecture. I began to see Alaska in a different light.
My condolences to his family for his death and for the sacrifices I am certain they made over the years as he endeavored to protect Alaska’s wild wolves.
The only time KBYR is ‘smart radio’ is when Shannyn is on…
John Toppenberg sends out an amazing newsletter about different AK wildlife issues with “vitamin democracy” calls to action…
Shannyn: this is not a fight that will be won in my life, but I will continue to show up to the fight.
Denali Park wolves belong to all of us.
Dorothy Keeler: such a passionate dedicated scientist. Gruff and singleminded. Fearless in his work. Dedicate tonight to his memory. Who will pick up the mantle? Now is our time to grieve, can’t think of the next step while grieving a hero.
Such a political issue. He gave scientific validity to point of view that admin and opponents hated. Saddened to see his life’s work denigrated for political reasons.
Times like this, she appreciates a saying: What a caterpiller calls the end of the world, the creator calls a butterfly.
yes, pc, I did…
my bad…
I lived in Alaska for 2+ years and was AMAZED at how many people aren’t more informed about these issues. I know there are more registered “Independents” than there are Republicans or Democrats, but I’m calling B.S. on that. A true Independent would not be swayed by conservatives on issues dealing with nature and wildlife in ALASKA.
In re: the whole Independent thing, in most states, you have to be registered in a party affiliation to vote in the primaries. I think that would make most of these closet Republicans who call themselves Independents come clean. Just my opinion.
Shannyn: Light a candle. No one can replace Gordon. Look how big the whole is, science, relationships between wolves and rest of environment.
Gordon parked his life. Jane Goodall of wolves.
Recognize the hole. He can never be replaced. But the fight doesn’t end with him.
AKM, where’s the light a candle site we had for Segundo? can we set up candles for Gordon there?
Great minds think alike. I’m on it and will put up a link in the post. AKM
Dang it! Missed the Foghat music outro. Great song. That was my first concert.
Here is the site for candles for Gordon Haber.
There’s a link in the post that goes to a group I created just for his candles so they are all in one place. Thanks gramiam. AKM
thanks, gramian
I had to step away for a bit, did I miss something about wolves being a part of subsistence hunting? I didn’t know that..
Wolves don’t see the borders of Denali Park. Haber tried to protect the wolves inside the park, knew that traps and snares just outside would get them.
Just fell out of the treehouse so I’ll ask here… how can I get Toppenberg’s newsletter? Is it available to those of us in pennsyltucky?
Lucky wolves feet, boo… yanno, for all them toughguy neocons who used deferrals to get out of having to go to vietnam.
To get John Toppenberg’s newsletter, send a request to info at akwildlife dot org.
Horrific things were posted about Haber when the news of his death was made public. Has seen the AK Outdoor Council intimated people at the Board of Game meetings. Hate of science and nature.
I’ll also be happy to send pdf’s of any of AWA’s past newsletters.
Caller mentions that the bull to cow ratio outside of easy four-wheeler range was 40 something out of a hundred versus the 6 in 100 that was in the study area. This started the aerial hunting movement, he thinks.
Emmylou. Love it!
Bless your heart! Thank you for having the courage to set aside your personal grief and dedicate tonight’s show to Gordon. You are handling it with grace and compassion. We are forever grateful…
Shannyn says you hear about tragedies all the time in AK, like everywhere, but the chances you know someone is higher there.
E-mails. From those who don’t trust themselves to hold it together on the air.
Even Wes Keller distanced himself from the Palin attempt to commedetise wildlife.
She reads from Haber’s website.
Sauerkraut, you have got to be kidding. I think I just found yet another cause to get involved with…
Shannyn tells story about an AK bathroom break. There was a huge pile of bear scat behind her as she deals with a little kid’s bathroom break.
Thank you, Shannyn! Your Gordon Haber tribute tonight really touched my heart! Blessings to all!
Take care Shannyn. God bless
Awesome live blogging, Problem Child! Many thanks!
Great show Shannyn, and candles are being lite in Gordon’s honor. Thank you AKM for setting up the site and giving us the link.
off to light a candle…thanks Shannyn, good show.
Beautiful, well done show, Shannyn…Condolences to all who knew Gordon Haber..
On behalf of the wolves that roam free in Alaska, thank you Shannyn.
And we await the butterfly of Dr. Gordon Haber.
I’m going to light a candle for Gordon Haber…and pour an adult beverage…and think how lucky I am to know amazing people…thanks!
xo
It was a sad but good show.
Thank you Shannyn.
thanks for enduring my story about the bear poo…it was either that…or start crying.
Does anyone know what happened to Mike Method? His show used to follow Shannyn’s. His name still appears on the KBYR schedule but has been on once in the last two months.
Hugs, Shannyn! Wonderful show. You know we mudpuppies will keep those candles burning.
Hugs to you Shannyn. Though I missed most of your broadcast, what I heard was amazing and touching. Surely his legacy will inspire someone or some group to carry on his good work.
Great show Shannyn, touching even though it had to be hard for you. I think it will do much to continue interest in Dr. Haber’s work. What a loss for Alaska, I lit a candle in remembrance. That story about the wolves howling after finding the crash site was awesomely sad & eerie.
mudpuppies in the treehouse…
be there or be square
AKM, your mudtini looks like my ideal, except those should be pickled onions, so a “muddy gibson”. But with tons of onions, like you have tons of olives! Martinis are all about the snacking…

I can’t wait
I’ll catch up with the comments later. I saw Shannyn’s post about Gordon Haber this morning. It’s always sad when a friend dies and sad for those of us who didn’t know him as well – I hope there is someone who will carry on his valuable research.
I missed Shannyn on the radio tonight as that was the time my daughter and I were having dinner while hubby stayed home being a tad grumpy because the Jayhawks were losing to Colorado. And now he’s watching the Washington Huskies. Hmmm.
But I did have my drink of choice with dinner – a strawberry daiquiri. Yum. And now I’m exhausted.
So sorry to hear of IMO this great mans demise.i get news updatetes daily from ADN. I give to the save the wolves and save the polar bears.Every year in my state the deer population goes up and licenses are issued for not only the male deer but also the female to help keep the population down.If they had left our wolf population alone we would maybe not have that problem,There are now a few packs here. I never did see if any one said whether people ate the meat from wolves or not???
Hugs to you Shannyn
What a terrible loss to wolves! I know there will be others to pick up the mantle he has left behind.
I adopted a wolf for my granddaughter last Christmas from Defenders of Wildlife. I shall adopt another this year. I sponsor flocks of chicks for her on her birthday from Heifer International. I donate monthly to Defenders of Wildlife and support their program against Sarah Palin’s aerial “hunting” of wolves. There is so much good that can be effected in the world at very little cost if only we stay awake. I refuse to let my granddaughter grow up in a world without wolves and polar bears and whales! Humans are not GOD to decide what lives and what dies. Every creature on this planet brings its own unique value to the system (except maybe cockroaches – I’m still trying to figure them out!).
I met Dr. Haber, ‘worked’ with him would be a polite way of saying it.
I respected his selfless work and dedication to the Denali packs, but I would be horrified if any of you mudpups who are new friends of Western Alaska had made a donation to Friends of the Animals.
This Conn. based group is no friend to Alaska Natives, they don’t even believe in our right to hunt and fish in this day and age. This criticism has nothing to do with predator control, Priscilla and group just flat out would rather have our way of life die rather than an animal used for sustainance.
Some of you may be against hunting, sport or even Subsistence, but we couldn’t possibly make it through our winters without the ability and right to hunt. We can’t fight the resources Friends of Animals have, it isn’t a level playing field. Please don’t let your admiration for Gordon’s work allow you to unwittingly donate to a group (borrowing from Sarah-speak, sorry) hell bent on trying to destroy the Eskimo way of life.
May Gordon rest in peace.
Kudos to Gordon Haber and his spirit dedicated to Alaska’s wolves. Hanging head and meandering along sadly in contemplation.
Rest in peace Gordon. You made an impact, and ignorance and greed will have a harder time reigning in our minds now and in the future.
