Friends mourn legendary wolf biologist Gordon Haber.

I keep losing the embedded video when I update the post, so please click HERE and check out the KTUU story and view the video on the right sidebar.

The Alaska Wildlife Alliance’s website is HERE. Check it out. It’s a great site, including the recent article “A Sad Wolf Song” about the loss of Gordon Haber, and other articles under the “Wolves” tab that talk about the importance of wolves to the ecosystem.

Wolf Song of Alaska has an article that talks more about Adolph Murie, the first one to study the Toklat wolf pack of Denali, HERE.

And of course, please visit Dr. Haber’s own website HERE.

A human being is a part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feeling as something separated from the rest, a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. – Albert Einstein.

Nature can be brutal but Leo says that political science not biological science is what controls the board of game.

They ignored Gordon because it was a political process.

Jay Hammond fired the head of the board of game for lying to him.

Johnny Johnson a wildlife photographer is up next.

Friend of Gordon Haber for 41 years. Not always easy. He was passionate about wolves, not in it for the money, but the science. Manage ecosystems for integrity. Whole of nature was important.

One time, he had the flu, offered John his seat on a supercub. Sixteen wolves, going after a moose cow and calves. Wolves gave up and went away because it wasn’t worth a kick in the jaw.

    A little FYI reminder:

John King, CNN State of the Union on Sunday morning will have segments from AK including an interview with Sen. Begich as King was in AK for a few days this week according to his Twitter page. http://twitter.com/JohnKingCNN

King also has some pictures, one of the Dark Horse Coffee Cafe on his Twitter page so will probably be talking to a few of the people I suspect from there about the economy, etc. like he has when visiting a different state each week on his show.

He has also posted about his trip to AK. You do not have to have a twitter page to read. Just click on the link to see the pictures and read his article. He mentions various people he spoke to including Gov Parnell.

Sharon from Phoenix is on now. Hopes that natives will get more chance to hunt than the people who are jacked up on hunting vee-eye-agra.

In northwest ak there are a lot less people and they get all of their meat from hunting and fishing. They also use hides and fur for parke roughs. The population in the area is low and they use what they kill. It is part of their culture and they all work together in the process. The white people in that area understand that, even though a lot of them use subsistence to survive.

I remember attending a lecture given by Mr. Haber back in the nineties while I was still in college at UAA. What a loss, and at such an unfortunate time in the fight to properly protect Alaska’s natural resources. My appreciation for the complexities of wildlife management began after that lecture. I began to see Alaska in a different light.

Such a political issue. He gave scientific validity to point of view that admin and opponents hated. Saddened to see his life’s work denigrated for political reasons.

I lived in Alaska for 2+ years and was AMAZED at how many people aren’t more informed about these issues. I know there are more registered “Independents” than there are Republicans or Democrats, but I’m calling B.S. on that. A true Independent would not be swayed by conservatives on issues dealing with nature and wildlife in ALASKA.

In re: the whole Independent thing, in most states, you have to be registered in a party affiliation to vote in the primaries. I think that would make most of these closet Republicans who call themselves Independents come clean. Just my opinion.

I missed Shannyn on the radio tonight as that was the time my daughter and I were having dinner while hubby stayed home being a tad grumpy because the Jayhawks were losing to Colorado. And now he’s watching the Washington Huskies. Hmmm.

I adopted a wolf for my granddaughter last Christmas from Defenders of Wildlife. I shall adopt another this year. I sponsor flocks of chicks for her on her birthday from Heifer International. I donate monthly to Defenders of Wildlife and support their program against Sarah Palin’s aerial “hunting” of wolves. There is so much good that can be effected in the world at very little cost if only we stay awake. I refuse to let my granddaughter grow up in a world without wolves and polar bears and whales! Humans are not GOD to decide what lives and what dies. Every creature on this planet brings its own unique value to the system (except maybe cockroaches – I’m still trying to figure them out!).

I met Dr. Haber, ‘worked’ with him would be a polite way of saying it.

I respected his selfless work and dedication to the Denali packs, but I would be horrified if any of you mudpups who are new friends of Western Alaska had made a donation to Friends of the Animals.

This Conn. based group is no friend to Alaska Natives, they don’t even believe in our right to hunt and fish in this day and age. This criticism has nothing to do with predator control, Priscilla and group just flat out would rather have our way of life die rather than an animal used for sustainance.

Some of you may be against hunting, sport or even Subsistence, but we couldn’t possibly make it through our winters without the ability and right to hunt. We can’t fight the resources Friends of Animals have, it isn’t a level playing field. Please don’t let your admiration for Gordon’s work allow you to unwittingly donate to a group (borrowing from Sarah-speak, sorry) hell bent on trying to destroy the Eskimo way of life.

    May Gordon rest in peace.

Kudos to Gordon Haber and his spirit dedicated to Alaska’s wolves. Hanging head and meandering along sadly in contemplation.

Rest in peace Gordon. You made an impact, and ignorance and greed will have a harder time reigning in our minds now and in the future.
