The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Open Thread – Flyinureye!

I got an email a couple weeks ago that I’ve been waiting for for a long time.  Flyinureye (also known as the Mudflats Art Department) was coming to town this week!  He and Mrs. Fly flew south to the Anchorage Banana Belt, and we were to meet for coffee.  We’ve been in email contact since before the election, and let me tell you, nothing is more exciting than getting an email from Flyinureye with a little paper clip attachment. That means that a great graphic is soon to be posted on The Mudflats.  But now the man, the myth, the legend was about to be revealed!  Until now I had only known him as the light under the crack in the Art Department door, so I was pretty excited.

Well, we had a great time over morning coffee.  It was like meeting up with an old friend.  You will all be pleased to know that after about an hour, we had most of the world’s problems solved.  In theory, anyway.

Let it never be said that I blew anyone’s anonymity, so Fly shall remain mysterious to the rest of you for now.  And we certainly don’t want him to be mobbed by crowds of adoring fans during the rest of his stay in Anchor-town.  So here he is, anonymity intact.

On the way back to the car, I noticed that the Alaska Bead Society was having their annual show.  I’d heard about it before, and there it was, so I thought I’d pop in and see what it was all about.  I ended up seeing quite a few people I knew, and had a great time wandering around enjoying the amazing array of items for sale.  Such incredible talent, and beautiful things!  I left with a wonderful bag of goodies.  For anyone looking for something to do tomorrow, they will be there again in the Conoco-Phillips Building on 7th and G from noon to 6:00.  Don’t miss it.  It’s a great spot to stock up on gifts for special people.

The mudflats is absolutely the nicest online community I’ve ever been in (and I haven’t even made my way into the forums yet!) and it’s not a surprise that you and the Flies hit it off so well. My thanks to Flyinureye for brightening my days with his art, and to you AKM for bringing us all together.

The beads are beautiful. I’ve been a sometime beader myself, but have never been to a show with just beads. Love the zipper pulls in the first picture. Hope they all do well in this economy.

What is that turret thing….a lookout tower for security? If you click on the link there to also go see the photos that Gryphen took from the ground it is apparent that there is a huge OSHA violation in that none of the framers are wearing hard hats. Sounds like there may be more violations that they are covering up as well. OSHA should take a little trip over there. Unless, once again the rules and laws are for everyone but the Palin’s. What about the septic and well? This indeed is shaping up to be a compound if they purchase the other white house next to to mansion they are building.

I just love those little bead people! Their adorable faces make me happy. I would absolutely buy those as gifts.

What is it about beads that get people goin’? When my kids were little munchkins they started a business called The Bead Factory. They had been given a big bag of beads for Christmas one year and spent endless winter hours making necklaces and bracelets. Grandma and Auntie thrilled the kids by buying some of their wares. Well, this lit an entrepreneurial fire under them and that spring they started selling to the neighbors. They had little ledgers and a cash box. Ended up doing it for a few years, on and off. I can still see those piles and piles of pretty beads. (can also still remember exactly how it feels to step on them in the middle of the night in bare feet!)

Flyinureye – Hope you have a wonderful trip! Always love your work.

Well, hey, an open thread. I’ve been off-flats for several days, and just spent a couple of hours trying to catch up — not that it is really possible to do that with the number of comments that get posted. Couple of comments, though:

@KN: That was a really depressing summary of the Pebble Mine situation. Please note, this is not a criticism — it was depressing because of the circumstances you so carefully explained. I had not done enough research, and did not realize the projected size of the copper reserve. That is gonna be tough to hold back. Also, the existence of moly will be a problem. The US doesn’t exactly have a surfeit of sources of moly. I think you are right that it may well be impossible to prevent the mine; the next logical fallback is to insist on much-better-than-industry-standard contamination controls. As you point out, the currently proposed methodology (earthen dams) is vulnerable to all sorts of surprise degradation; but even without that, there is not any prior art evidence that it is sufficient to prevent gradual destruction of the salmon fishery. Since A-A is going to make a buttload of money off of this mine, it seems like the state ought to insist that they implement extreme overkill contamination control.

There are always two parts to a mandated technical fix — (1) somebody (preferably an eminent somebody) has to describe the required fix; (2) somebody (usually somebody else) has to rally political and public support. The only thing I’m sure of at this point is I cannot be either of those somebodies because I am neither a geologist nor an Alaskan. Can you point to the eminent technical guy? Which could be you, of course. (In my own case — semiconductors — I used to supervise eminent technical guys, but would never have been confused for one of them).

You have clearly identified the weakness in the present resistance to the Pebble Mine — it is diffuse and populist, and the population in opposition is several orders of magnitude less well-heeled than A-A. With the financials as you describe them, it is almost certainly not possible to prevent the mine — the best possible outcome is to ensure that it doesn’t kill the salmon fishery.

Have we ever gotten an accurate report of what her book advance was, when she got it, and what the rest of the deal entailed? In any case, with all that buying, building and renting, it must have been substantial.

If I was Van Flein, or Van Flein’s partnership, I would be standing in front of and blocking the work, saying “you get your fun toys AFTER you pay what you owe me!”. (I am assuming he has NOT been paid, but who knows? I wouldn’t put it past her to have negotiated a settlement with him and STILL be begging for money for said bills at the AFT … but that’s sorta fraud, isn’t it? It is certainly Un-Christian).

Once again, she does not practice what she preaches – fiscal conservatives, I thought, didn’t add to debt they already have, they pay their bills first, then frugally decide how to spend what’s left.

I think it may not have gotten traction last year simply because their “Sarah” doesn’t actually look much like “our” Sarah. It could be that folks just didn’t see the point. What a shame.

It sure is, and the first thing we can do is NOT go over there to see it for ourselves! That just adds to their perception that people think like them and also puts money in someone’s pocket. Go over and read Gryphen’s description if you want more info.

I think it’s beneath contempt, and I would have thought the same if that kind of game had come out with Obama replaced by President Bush during his term. I didn’t vote for Bush, I wanted to see him out, but I would NEVER have engaged in, nor endorsed that kind of violent thinking.

    rant/on

Don’t like Obama? Fine. We have a peaceful way of changing our leadership, it’s called VOTING! In a tad more than three years we get another Presidential election. The President can’t just do anything he (or she) wants: so if Obama is going to do so much “damage”, it will only be if Congress lets him, and, funny, it doesn’t look like there making ANYTHING easy for him, so stop with the fear crap already and get involved, make your voice heard, work for change … or just shut up.

Love the beads! I’m on Medicare and have prescription coverage. I always have trouble with the prescription insurance coverage, because they spend each year changing which drugs they will cover.

I’m now on my THIRD biopsy of the liver in three weeks. Hopefully, they got enough “stuff” to make a diagnosis. This week I received a letter from the prescription insurance people that my co-pay was going up next year. Not a lot, but since they’ve told me, in years past, after the new year what meds I couldn’t get and how much it was going to cost me, I wonder if this has anything to do with:
    1. Health reform. Get it in now, so it’s not under the reform policies. OR
    2. The fact that I probably have cancer.

So I’m going to send this info along to my Senators and my Representatives, to see what they’ve got to say. If Obama’s money for those of us on SSD and Medicare comes through, since we’re not getting a cost of living bump, that would just about cover the cost of the prescriptions over the year.

Otherwise, SNOW for the first time since April 12th. Stuck but just for a couple of hours. In fact, as I’m looking out the window, the fall leaves are dancing merrily with the snow flurries.

Also my best friend (who does bead work) was at a show and told me she got me a crystal and had everyone putting good intentions and prayers in it. She yelled thank you from me to everyone there. I had a picture of wearing this crystal next to my heart on a necklace.

She gave it to me when she was driving me to Boston for the last biopsy. It weighs 2.2 pounds! Don’t think I’m going to wear it around my neck! Got to think of a good place to put it.

    BuffaloGal…. about that Video game.
I saw that Gryphen had posted that story late last night. The whole concept/idea is very ‘ disturbing ‘. He explained in the post the company makes money by clicking on the website so I would discourage anybody from doing so.
I was relying on the fact that one person could get the details and pass that info along to the rest of us. We say don’t feed the trol//s… same applies here.

If someone ( in the know ) can pass along to the rest of us ” who ” needs to be notified so that we can work together ‘ pulling on the rope together ‘ at the same time like in a ‘ Tug-of-War’ to make the most progress.
Who has oversight over this… I don’t know. Just a few years ago we had the FCC ” outraged ” over a ‘ wardrobe malfunction ‘ during the Super Bowl Game. The complaint and outrage over THAT ( 1 or 2 seconds ) was that it affected the damaged the ‘ young minds ‘ of our children. Really…? And THOSE people don’t think a Kid sitting and playing this video game for hour after hour won’t produce some ‘ damage ‘ to their minds…?
( Their video is no different than watching Faux News hour after hour )
Somebody let us know ‘ who ‘ or what Organization we need to notify . We’ll make sure they are notified.

HIG @26 – I wrote to Gryphen to ask if he was sure about the “pay per click”. To me it looked like they generated money by affiliate ads and their “pro” membership. I certainly don’t want to make money for these yahoos but I also think that seeing the site first hand can often be a motivating element. I mentioned that earlier to Terpsichore also. I don’t think you get the full impact of how dangerous this is by reading excerpts and imo the impact is needed so that people react and say, “enough!” And also, if this info is going to get broadcast widely enough we really can’t do it full service on comment threads and twitter. Not enough room . The link seems to be the most effective tool. Thoughts?

Beyond that, I’m not sure who has authority over websites. I entirely hear you HIG on the “wardrobe malfunction” hubub with the FCC. If that was enough to cause such an uproar you’d think they’d certainly have something to say about a video game depicting the violent overthrow of our current president.

I wrote to the FBI and to a number of journalists. I’ll check in to the FCC thing. I don’t think we can depend on lodging a complaint with their hosting company because it sounds like they host it themselves.

These wingnuts really need to figure out we live in a democracy. There was no coup, you idjits. It’s called a landslide victory by way of a democratic election. That’s d i f f e r e n t than a coup.

Also came across this fun nugget. Poor religious crazies won’t like this one little bit. Head’s a-poppin:

    >>Professor Ellen van Wolde, a world acclaimed Old Testament scholar, may have introduced a considerable problem for creationists. What if the Bible never actually said God “created the Heaven and the Earth”? Van Wolde has issued an intriguing paper suggesting that a mistranslation is responsible for an error in the first sentence of Genesis and that in reality the Bible says that God merely rearranged things on the pre-existing Earth. Much of this turns on the Hebrew verb “bara”, which she says did not mean “to create” but to “spatially separate.” That would require Creationists to rename themselves as “separatists.” “Baristas” may cause trademark issues with Starbucks.

Professor van Wolde looked at the first line of Genesis that reads “in the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth” and found that the Hebrew text had been translated incorrectly. The proper translation, she argues, is that the Earth was already there when God created humans and animals.

The use of bara she argues was “meant to say that God did create humans and animals, but not the Earth itself.”<<

Calling Sarah Palin: A Good Time to STAND UP for a Conservative Candidate

If you think Gov. Palin should support the conservative candidate over the republican candidate, please comment and pass it on to others so she can see our concern. This is a great opportunity to start taking a stand.
There is a rift growing in the Republican Party. One that is being exposed prior to a off year special election in NY. To make it very short—several popular republicans (including Gingrich)– are supporting a candidate (Republican State Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava), that has pro-abortion and pro-gay rights postions. Not to mention an the Acorn connections.

While several republicans, Huckabee for one is not endorsing anyone as we know of as yet.

We sincerely hope Sarah Palin will buck the republican party like she says she is un-afraid to do by standing up for the Conservative Party nominee Doug Hoffman, the candidate with the clear policy differences. In doing so she will join former Presidential candidate Fred Thompson, and the fiscal conservative group Club for Growth to endorse Hoffman over the Republican nominee.

This would good time for Sarah to show her conservative roots and that she is NOT part of the good ole’ boy club.

Oh dear. Pressure’s on. But wait. Do we have a Conservative party?
    ~~

NY23 UPDATE: Conservatives Ask, ‘What Will Sarah Palin Do?’
    Robert Stacy McCain, 10.18.09

Supporters of Conservative Party congressional candidate Doug Hoffman — whose special election campaign in upstate New York’s 23rd district is drawing nationwide attention — have begun to wonder why former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin hasn’t endorsed Hoffman.

“In doing so she will join former Presidential candidate Fred Thompson, and the fiscal conservative group Club for Growth to endorse Hoffman over the Republican nominee,” conservative blogger Dale Gordon wrote yesterday.

Hoffman supporters say a Palin endorsement would counterbalance the GOP establishment’s backing of liberal Republican candidate Dede Scozzafava.

Josh Painter of the Texas for Palin blog says an endorsement from Palin “could be posted on the former governor’s Facebook Notes page, and it would be an instant sensation among Sarah’s 928,739 Facebook supporters . . . and the media would give it an audience of millions more.”

Painter notes that Palin, who energized grassroots conservatives as the 2008 GOP vice-presidential candidate, has declared her desire to support “candidates who believe in the right things, regardless of their party label or affiliation.”

More than anything, Hoffman campaign officials say, they need a quick injection of cash to match the big money the two major national parties are giving to their candidates. There is a rapidly escalating money battle in the three-way NY23 campaign. Both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama are planning fundraising events for the little-known Democratic candidate, Bill Owens. The Republican National Committee and the National Republican Congressional Committee have enraged conservatives by giving “six figure” contributions to Scozzafava.

Hoffman’s grassroots supporters say time is running out for Palin to make an endorsement, if she is to have any impact on the Nov. 3 election, now barely two weeks away. Hoffman is endorsed by the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, and some of Hoffman’s pro-life supporters have reportedly launched an e-mail campaign — including prayer requests — to secure the endorsement of Palin, whose pro-life bona fides would carry weight with the significant share of conservative Catholics in the rural upstate New York district.

Robert Stacy McCain is co-author with Lynn Vincent of “Donkey Cons: Sex, Crime, and Corruption in the Democratic Party”.

So there we go; now we know. There will be a third political party on the books, the Conservative Party, and they assumed that Sarah Palin was in their club, the Club For Growth.
And you can buy Sarah’s book for $8.95.

CFG touts itself as the inheritor of Ronald Reagan’s “vision of limited government and lower taxes” and advances anti-government vision through its support of political candidates who hew to its right-wing economic orthodoxy. The Club has aggressively opposed several moderate Republicans often to the consternation of GOP political leaders. (Right Wing Watch)

“We want to be seen as the tax-cut enforcer in the [Republican] party.”
    – Stephen Moore, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 6/20/2001

“I can say this because I’m not an elected official: the most selfish group in America today is senior citizens. Their demands on Washington are: ‘Give us more and more and more.’ They have become the new welfare state, and given the size and political clout of this constituency, it’s very dangerous. One of the biggest myths in politics today is this idea that grandparents care about their grandkids. What they really care about is that that Social Security check and those Medicare payments are made on a timely basis.”
    –Stephen Moore

“We’re trying to let candidates know that if they ever voted for a tax increase, we’ll never support them and in fact we’ll work to defeat them. We’re trying to get the word out to even the lowest grass-roots level that if you’re a Republican you aren’t allowed to vote for taxes.”

Why You Need to Read Going Rogue
Sarah Palin is one of the most controversial and exciting figures on the political stage.

She is hated and feared by her liberal detractors. Conservatives love her.

Her story has never really been fully told — until now.

From her humble beginnings to her time in the spotlight as the first female Republican vice presidential candidate, Sarah Palin has led an extraordinary life.

Going Rogue will recount her shocking rise from housewife to governor of the state of Alaska — and how she took on a corrupt political establishment to win the state’s highest office.

Going Rogue will tell for the first time why John McCain selected her and what really happened during the 2008 campaign.

In Going Rogue, Sarah Palin holds nothing back and even gives her stunning assessment of Barack Obama.

She also reveals her thoughts about a 2012 presidential run.

And in Going Rogue, you will discover the personal side of one of America’s most fascinating women.

Sarah shares how faith has led her throughout her life and offers her insights into the personal challenges she’s faced — including balancing her time as a working mother, recognizing the war’s impact with her son serving combat in Iraq, having a child with a disability, and supporting her teenage daughter through an unplanned pregnancy.

The media have gone out of their way to distort and twist the real Sarah Palin.

In Going Rogue you will get to see her close up and real — and find out what the media simply doesn’t want you to know.

Palin has received much attention through the media, but never before has her complete story been told in her own words.

    Going Rogue does just that.

    Falling dollar a bogus crisis
    October 18, 2009

    BY DAVID ROEDER Sun-Times Columnist
The dollar is falling and can’t get up, and President Obama is to blame. This is the chorus from economic blogs and conservative critics, but is it true?

It’s great gambit to attack Obama for not coming to the dollar’s defense. It’s a coded attack on his patriotism. Republicans need some kind of rallying cry for the mid-term elections to make everyone forget their own duplicity in fiscal management from the Bush era.

Even Sarah Palin climbed onto the bandwagon. The noted currency expert posted on her Facebook page how Obama’s performance with the dollar has worsened our trade deficit and national security, a real double punch.

Can someone check into what happened at a board meeting I believe Oct. 16, last Friday, concerning Matanuska Creamery. Did they get a loan extension or more money?

Also, Kristan Cole has had some new videos (5?) made for her by Seth Adam Smith, one of the ocean of urine group. He may have made some of the ridiculous Scarah we love you videos, I don’t know. But this shows a clear connection between the group and Scarah.

    An annonymous comment from Palingates:

Patrick, great that you brought up the new Matanuska Creamery. This is 4 dairy farmers and two owners who have previously defaulted on over $4 million in State loans. Now they stand with Kristan Cole at the helm with their hands out again.

There is a board meeting tomorrow where it is rumored that they may ask for another $410,000 loan.

We might as well call it a gift. They got $650,000 in Federal Grant money, a million dollars of the equipment out of Mat Maid , another $630,000 state loan, have a Federal Tax Lien slapped on them that they have not paid….the list is long.

They built this business on other people’s money and Cole is at the heart of it. She is the chariwoman of two boards…the fox is guarding the hen house with NO oversight. Now they are waiting for some Federal cheese money. Gimme , Gimme, Gimme…This is a private business living off of state and Federal money. Sickening. Cole needs to be investigated.

This just in on the AP wire:

“Investigators are examining the possibility of other conspirators, “including the possibility that even some of the media outlets may have had some knowledge about this,” Alderden said.

Documents show that a media outlet has agreed to pay money to the Heenes with regards to the balloon incident, Alderden said. He didn’t name the media outlet, but said it was a show that blurs “the line between entertainment and news.” It wasn’t clear whether the deal was signed before or after the alleged hoax, or whether that media outlet was a possible conspirator.”

Who can guess the media outlet in one answer?

Barack Obama: All the president’s emails
In a unique experiment in democratic transparency, Barack Obama – a BlackBerry owner, and the first American president to use email while in office – has agreed to copy G2 in on his otherwise highly confidential electronic communications. Each week, we present a selection from recent days:

To: Rahm Emanuel Subject: Re: GQ magazine’s list of the 50 most powerful people in DC
Well done on your No1 spot. (You saw the small print about how they deliberately excluded Joe and me? Just checking.) Naturally, I’m assuming you only got the top placement by getting the editor of GQ in a headlock and threatening to slice off his feet with a breadknife. Although I guess that’s a form of power, too, so fair enough! BTW, Robert Gates mentioned he was pissed at coming second, and was going to give you a piece of his mind. So I said “you and whose army”? I thought that was pretty funny. I can be a pretty funny guy sometimes. BHO

To: White House Staff Subject: Fox News
All, you’ll have seen reports that the administration is “at war” with Fox News, purportedly because it’s a vicious, lie-filled sewer of bigoted propaganda and hate. Now, I’m a uniter, not a divider, so I wouldn’t personally endorse any notion of Fox News being a vicious, lie-filled sewer of bigoted propaganda and hate. But just fyi, it’ll no longer be available on WH televisions, and any attempt to select that channel on the remote will result in a mild electric shock to the user. Warmly, Barack

To: Michael Steele, Chairman, Republican National Committee Subject: Re: List of suggested lines for Fox News hosts to use on air to dispel Obama administration claims that Fox News is in bed with the Republican party
Uh… Michael? I think this was probably meant for someone at Fox. Don’t you hate it when you accidentally send an email to the person it’s about, instead of the person it’s intended for? I once did that with an email about Sarah Palin – I hesitate to imagine what the fallout would’ve been if she’d been able to read! Yours understandingly, Barack

To: Robert Gibbs , Reggie Love Subject: Balloon boy
Worked like a dream, guys. (Special thanks to Reggie for making the balloon.) Every channel followed the story, enabling us to slip out bad unemployment statistics. We should do something similar to distract the Repubs when it comes to the final votes on healthcare… BHO

FYI In AKM’s Pebble MIne report, I commented about a site that gives quite a bit of information on the impact Pebble mine would have on the surrounding Bristol Bay and the surrounding area. The site is Groundtruthtrekking.org. The two scientists are a couple who from June 2007 to June 2008 walked from Seattle to the first Aleutian island. They now live in a yurt-type house in Alaska, studying the the natural landscape. (they have some great photos and videa of Mt Redoubt’s eruption.) Their book ‘A Long Trek Home- 4000 Miles By Boot, Raft and Ski’, by Erin McKittrick, is now out and they will have a signing in Seward on the 19th. Also, they will be in Anchorage on the 21st at Title Wave Books, 22nd at REI.
A lower 48 signing schedule is at their website. It is an amazing adventure and I just wanted to pass this on.
