Open Thread – Still Steaming

steaming

When Mt. Redoubt violently awoke from a 20-year slumber, I wrote about it a lot, especially since it was in danger of wiping out the oil terminal at Drift River which sits at its base, and right next to Cook Inlet.  And almost every single time I typed the name of the volcano, I made the same typo that I had to correct, over and over and over.  So, to me he will always be…. Mr. Redoubt.

And Mr. Redoubt is still steaming away over there across the Inlet.  I enjoy the view of the volcano often from various vantage points around town, but I loved this shot from the air looking across Flathorn Lake taken by … we’ll call him ‘Mudflatter Don.’  I’ll try to post more photos from Mudflatter Don, now that I have his permission.  He’s a great friend, an awesome pilot, and a tremendous photographer.

Here’s another one taken of his flying companion in a Super Cub.

Say NO to Palin in Politics Says:

sorry, I have my dates wrong. Brooksley Born came on board in 1996, (not 1993). She believed in the need for regulation, not a deregulated market, which put her up against Alan Greenspan, who then basically demanded she stop the push for regulation when the market was so strong and lobbied hard against her in congress.

Ronald Reagan put Greenspan in place during his administration and gave him very powerful influential voice. Greenspan’s opinion was the know all end all at the time on economics. President Clinton kept Greenspan on, as the bull market tides kept riding high. Then the trouble that Born had been concerned about and warned against hit, wave coming down. Surfs up.

Say NO to Palin @102 and earlier- I watched most of this Frontline show (The Warning) too. Very good – I think they said you can watch it online so I’m off to find the link.
Watching Greenspan sitting there in that hearing, saying he had been wrong all along, made me want to throw up. If only Brooksley Born – the one who issued ‘The Warning’ – had not been forced out.

@46 Say No — While I’m embarrassed that my native state is the site of a Palin dumbo-dump, I have to say that prohibiting cameras and recording devices at a speech isn’t that unusual, no matter who the speaker may be.

Now, admittedly, the prohibition on cameras is often intended to prevent the distraction of dozens or hundreds of flashes; and the ban on recording is often to preserve the option of the speaker or the venue to release a commercial version. This doesn’t seem to be the case here. Prohibiting cell-phone recording is — how shall I put this — stupid. And unenforceable. I mean, I guess they could catch people trying to video-record with their cells, but it’s pretty much impossible to notice someone audio-recording.

Searching bags, though, is a rather common thing — e.g., they do it at Disneyland and at the San Jose Jazz Festival (where they don’t want you to sneak in your own booze).

@Ripley: Sorry your lawyer was a flop. Nevertheless, the way arb is supposed to work is the arbitrator looks at the facts, not the drama.

    Best of luck.

Re: Ziegler/KO. I think Keith should take him up on it, but he should insist that Ziegler deposit the $100K with a neutral depository in advance.

Admittedly, this will probably result in a one-hour waste of time, but $100K for charity isn’t a bad rate of return. And KO can always eviscerate Ziegler retrospectively.
