The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Going Rogue vs. Going Rouge

I bet you all thought there was nothing, I mean NOTHING that could get you to your local bookseller on November 17.  That’s the day that Sarah Palin’s memoir Going Rogue hits the shelves, and Palin fans will overwhelm your local Barnes & Noble and Borders to snap up the 400-page tome.  Well, grab your Red Bull…or should I say “Rouge Bull” and jump into the fray.

No, I’m not asking you to buy a copy of Sarah Palin’s book.  You already know that I’m going to take one for the team and do that so you don’t have to.  But there’s a book coming out on the very same day that might hold more appeal.

rougevrogue

To anticipate your next question, no this is not a joke, or some fabulous Photoshop creation by the Mudflats Art Department (flyinureye).  It is in fact the real cover and the real title of a real book that will be in bookstores on November 17, also too.

Going Rouge is compiled by Richard Kim and Betsy Reed, two top editors of the left-leaning weekly The Nation, and includes essays by Nation regulars like Katrina vanden Heuvel, Naomi Klein, and Katha Pollitt. It’s the first release from OR Books, a fledgling outfit founded earlier this year by publishing veterans John Oakes and Colin Robinson that “embraces progressive change in politics, culture and the way we do business,” according to its website.

But wait, there’s more!  In addition to those listed above, Mudflatters will be able to enjoy essays by Max Blumenthal, Shannyn Moore, and yes,…. yours truly!  I was quite honored to be asked to write a piece for the book.

And no worries about the little ones feeling left out of the festivities.  On that very same day you can pick up a copy of a kid’s version of Going Rouge!

colorbook

The sample pages on the book’s promotional website fall clearly into the realm of political satire, including a coloring page with lipsticks and pigs (naturally) and a caricature of Palin in fishing overalls and possible “fishing gear”: a gun, a saw, an ax, and a bomb.

So, get ready for some combat shopping on November 17!  Whichever side of the political spectrum you inhabit, there’s something in bookstores for you!

AKM – thanks for taking one for the team! You rock – and can’t wait for your book reviews of Rogue!

Where can I buy Going Rouge? I just checked Amazon & it’s not listed, although “Going Rogue” is now only $9 (not that I’ll ever give Queen Sarah a dime of my money)!

As soon as it is listed, I’ll put it up in the Mudflats Amazon Shop and stick a link in the sidebar. If anyone notices it before I do, send me an email! Thanks! AKM

Now, won’t it be precious if Going Rouge outsells Going Rogue, at least at hard copy retailers?

I can just see the book reviews side by side in the local papers.

    Priceless.

  8. 9
    trishaNo Gravatar says:

I just clicked on that link and a lot of palinbots are on there already…saying that Palin has a better track record than President Obama. Huh? They are saying she is more qualified, he hasn’t done anything, he copied his book from Rev. Wright’s sermon’s (another huh?).

Guess these people don’t understand the concept of advanced degrees, United States Senate and President of the United States. Sheesh. dumb, dumb, dumb.

She quits – quits! – her job as a United States Governor to pimp out her book on TV with her “enemies” simply to make money for herself.

Palin is a freakin’ joke. Have you no shame “Governor”?

OMG, wonkette has the thread up about going rouge. They are so tasteless and hysterically funny. I often laugh out loud at the comments. They’re suggesting going to barnes and nobel on the 17th and switching the book covers. Since many palinistas don’t read they’re thinking many will buy the wrong book and ask winkey to sign it, lol. I’m wondering if going rouge will hold it’s value and not drop down to dollar store bin prices before it’s release as going rogue has. I needed a laugh after getting so ticked off at oprah. I’m noticing on the internets that my thoughts about winkey and balloon boy’s dad seeming like kindred spirits is catching on. You know use your kids to promote yourself and all.

It’s not likely, but my lil heart is wishing that Oprah would hold up Going ROUGE on the day of SP’s “interview”… instead of THE OTHER ONE…

I found this info earlier in the day and went straight over to read the article and comments on EW…

the Plainbots are out in force… and waaaaay off point… as Trisha noted…

it’s hilarious to watch that anthill work alive with their crazy poison… too bad there isn’t some ant bait to quiet that mound of poisonous creatures…

    honestyinGovNo Gravatar says:

I sure hope the publisher of the REAL story , Going Rouge, will be able to get an advanced copy of the Book over to the Oprah Studios so they can compare notes to the fiction Book Sarah put out. And if you email Oprah…. make sure to tell them to look for this new Edition.
Also keep telling them to use AKM and Mudflats as a resource for fact-checking.

I’m sure AKM will wait until after the 17th when the book comes out to post her ‘ story ‘ or contribution to the book. This will be like an early Christmas surprise as to what is ‘ in the package ‘. Shannyns too.
Has Rachel called for you to be on to discuss your book contribution yet….?
Should we be calling her to ask maybe? It’s not like you are strangers anymore.

The photos are different but I’ll bet her publishers try to sue for copyright infringement because of similarity of looks.

I can’t imagine the confusion will be good for sales. I bet many of her fans won’t even notice the difference between rogue and rouge unless they look at the subtitle.

that is an hysterical idea, unfortunately not viable… GOING ROUGE is a paper back, so it won’t have a dust jacket…. but it’s a good thought…

and I believe folks that the book is only available through OR Books… it’s self published, so wouldn’t be on any major booksellers shelf or websites until after it’s launch date… I think….

go to EW.com… and check it out….

I don’t think that’s a Keatley shot… looks more like Getty or AP… which can be purchased for use… if the publisher didn’t take it, it would have to pay for usage rights from anyone else… I feel reasonably sure they paid their dues for the photo, otherwise they’d be slam dunked by someone right off the bat…

Speaking about ‘ switching the covers ‘… the alternative Book I believe was going to be in paperback if I am not mistaken so it wouldn’t have a cover.

Once these book signings start though… it would still be funny to have some Mudflatters take the alternative book to a signing and ask her to sign it.
It might go right over her head and she might not notice.
I mean after all… she did talk on the phone with President of France Sarkozy.

The reaction on a Video tape would be priceless…. posted on YouTube. I’m thinking of Jon Stewarts reporter in the field who does those interviews. He came to Alaska for the Quitters resignation picnic.

And would this signed Alternative book have a market on E Bay…?
Bidders like Mr. Morris, ( from the dinner auction ) Steven Colbert or Geoffrey Dunn…
While there…just ask her to autograph that ” Conservative Women Leaders of the GOP Calendar” under HER Month.

Along with his deleted emails and his recorded phone call released during the Troopergate scandal, which showed him pressuring a State Trooper officer to help get Palin’s former brother-in-law fired, his behavior raised questions about just how much the governor knew about Bailey’s dirty work.

As a few people noted earlier… the story today on Andrew Halcro’s blog is about someone in Sarah’s ‘ Inner Circle ‘ ( Frank Bailey ) who is willing to spill some of the details from the inside. I’ll bet his Book story contradicts what Sarah wrote. Will Meg and Sarah be calling him a ” liar & an opportunist” as well..?
FleaBag better stay by the phone… Sarah maybe calling soon.

And once people in Wasilla and Alaska see what Bailey writes… will that be encouragement for them to want to ‘ tell ‘ some part of the REAL story as well.

I must say…the cover of the Rouge book looks much classier than the one on the Rogue book.

Truly, side by side, there is NO comparison; the Rouge is well thought out and aesthetically pleasing, the Rogue is just thrown together and dumpy. I have no doubt the contents of each will be an accurate reflection of their respective covers. beth.

(I bet her Sarahness is somewhere pitching a hissy-fit that the Rouge’s photo DOESN”T look like something the cat just dragged in. Out of the rain; old and scraggly and bedraggled. And not very inspiring. And rather, all things considered, downright ugly. Also, too.

Geeze, Louise ~ what in the world was she thinking in OKing that photo for her book? Of all the zillions of pics she’s had taken of her, could she have possibly found one more frumpy and cheap-looking? If she were even a semi-intelligent lass, she’d have realized how ‘rode hard and put up wet’ she comes off in the Rogue pic… )
