Open Thread – Lost in Translation
Every once in a while something appears on the internet as if from another galaxy where they speak some sort of language that approximates English, but isn’t. It’s generally the work of some kind of automatic translator that strings together oddly literal, and yet completely off the mark versions of the original into a foreign language and back again.
I don’t know exactly why or how this happens, but I hate to look a humor gift horse in the mouth. In the past, I’ve found translations of my own posts, and translations of some of the comments that have left me in pain from laughing so hard.
This time, it’s someone writing about one of my posts from back in March. It has to do with Rep. Mike Doogan (D) who took it upon himself to utilize his state e-newsletter and legislative mailing list to out my identity. Why this one popped up now, I have no idea except that news may take a while to reach other galaxies.

Unbelievable narration here. Microphone Doogan an AK Province Representative, apparently with nil better to make, holds took to investigate not our governor but the individuality of a blogger he differs with. He things it she should n’t be able to state what she desires anonymously. So he outed her.
I make n’t concur with most of what is indited in the Mudflats but I make prise her passionateness and penning and right to privateness. Microphone Doogan makes not. He is a province representative not a dissatisfied adolescent.
What a also-ran. I desire his components vote him out of office.

I’ve read that about five times now and it still makes me laugh. And you know, I also desire Microphone Doogan’s components vote him out of office. So, if you or anyone you know wants to be a Spenard Province Representative, and not a dissatisfied adolescent, drop me a line!
“I desire his components vote him out of office” is a wonderful thought. If it happens, his components can then say “Microphone Doogan, all your vote are belong to us”.
Doogan and Palin are great examples of what happens when a State is run by special corporate interest (the petro industry). Fools are placed into positions of authority because they too stupid to realize they are marionette puppets, with strings attached.
I saw nothing wrong with that post.

River’s high here after all the rain yesterday. Oh, the BIG NEWS! We’re having twelve puppies by c-section on Tuesday. At least we hope Katie can wait until Tuesday. She’s BIG!!! Saw the x-ray last week and there’s NO ROOM in there, just all spinal cords and heads. The vet says all look good though!

I agree it did seem to come from another galaxy – sounded like a blast from the past, i.e,. a Conehead skit on SNL: Beldar and Prymatt, the parental units, when asked whence they came, “We are from France!”
Seriously, it appears to have been written by someone intelligent, but not fluent in English, who looked up terms in an outdated ??? to English dictionary.

It reads exactly like someone originally wrote it first in their native non-english language and then just copied it into an online translator. Voila-the meaning comes across for the most part but the wording is just not what we use.

Sometimes these mistranslations are just funny, but sometimes, too, they are more subtle and can lead to frustration. A few years ago my older brother called me – he was completely frustrated with a new sound system he had just gotten for his PC. The directions were concise and explicit, “There Are Two Ways To Connect The Amplifier To Your PC,” and provided separate illustrations of each way the connection could be made. My brother, an accountant, diligently tried first one way and then the other for nearly an hour, back and forth, rebooting, not rebooting, and all without success. As he read the directions to me, I couldn’t contain my laughter. The problem was in the first line of the directions. “There Are Two Ways To Connect …” is something any of us would read to implicitly mean that we’re confronted with an either/or choice, but that line should have read “There Are Two Connections To Make … .” Once I convinced him to connect his new amp “both ways” at the same time (which required several assurances that neither his new toy nor his computer would produce smoke or noxious fumes as karmic punishment for his having disobeyed the directions), all was well.
…..doing the other galaxy translation, that is.
Thanks for sharing that, AKM. I read it several times, too. Seems like a foe of Doogan, written in a way to protect identity. I think the term “Netmail” was used to project being computer illiterate, which I bet not.

AKM, I love the translation. It took me a minute to figure out how they came up with Microphone Doogan, then I just started to laugh. It’s probably someone who is very articulate in his/her own language. I’m sure the writer would be horrified to find that we aren’t reading what was intended.
Buffalo Gal I kept thinking with that description that Dunn must not know how much Palin was Twitttering while still in office and how many posts are on facebook, written by someone else. Guess it takes one to [think] they know one, when it comes to calling out the layabouts.

He uses the phrase a ” Couric ambush “. Couric asked the most simple innocuous question that had no agenda behind it all all. Couric could not steer that question in any manner or direction. Sarah could have given the name of ANYTHING. Any answer works…. just name one. It wouldn’t have mattered. The answer could not be proven or disproven. Heck… say you read the ADN….It’s YOUR Newspaper.
The fact that he can’t even recognize or acknowledge this SIMPLE Fact makes everything else he says rather moot. Like talking to a table.

Since this is an open thread, can any of you explain to me any better than what I already think, about the Public Option health care becoming an “opt in (or out?)” measure left to states?
So, if the federal bill passes, does that mean, before we can sign up, our state legislatures have to decide if it’s OK for us to sign up? Aside from being a cowardly way for our fed. reps. and sens. to duck having to take a stand on a controversial issue that might get them voted out of office next time around, what good does it do? I sure as heck don’t want to have to wait, write more letters, and e-mails, and make the dreaded phone calls, to fight for this AGAIN! And I sure as heck don’t want to, after doing all that work, get told I “can’t” sign up for the federal insurance just because I live in a certain state. If I’m wrong about how this works, please please please, I know you mudpups will enlighten me.
And what the heck is a ‘trigger’? Really. I don’t know and am too lazy today to google and sift.

Trisha & Pat – The Palinistas think that $P’s use of Facebook is pure genius. Somehow SHE does it the RIGHT way and the left could learn from her. Why is it when the public identifies something and comments on what it is, as in the case of sarah palin the right instantly perceives it to be some sort of conspiracy? If there is an organized plot I personally have never received any compensation and not to brag but I’ve come up with some rather good zingers on the loony sites. I’ve never thought for a second that the winky worshippers that invade all blogs in defense of their dimwitted heroine were a paid faction. I just consider them wingnuts that have achieved some sort of loose organization in their nuttiness.

What blows my mind about their Couric “ambush” delusion is that if you watch that interview, you can literally see Couric’s face falling as it dawns on her that this person is so ignorant that she (Palin) does not know what Katie is talking about most of the time.
There’s no worse feeling that realizing during an interview that all of your questions will need to be re-worded and re-worked in order to adjust to the interviewee’s ability. It’s quite scary and daunting. I felt nothing but pity for Katie — I could see her trying to decide how to ask anything without being perceived as attacking Palin, since Palin’s ability was so inadequate to the normal questions one would ask a VP candidate.
And if Katie had completely adjusted for Palin’s qualifications and abilities, Katie would have been skewered for falling down on the job. Not an easy task for anyone. And she had to do all of that on the fly, though I expect that as the interview wore on, she was more prepared. I can almost hear Katie’s calls to her producers after the first interview, where they desperately try to figure out how to interview someone who does not answer questions and seems oblivious to what they don’t know.
Katie did a great job, and deserves the award she got this year! And as an aside, I’m sure Katie felt what a lot of us women felt; utter disappointment that this person who was getting a great opportunity to advance women politically was not only unqualified, but fed into all of the stereotypes we’ve tried so hard to overcome. A moment of silent grief for us all.
The Palin cult simply do not deal with reality.

If I had time, and I don’t, I’d try translating one of Palin’s moronic speeches into a foreign language and then to English using the Google translator. Mind you, that’s two translations into languages other than the Crazy’s. Conservative columnist George Will went after former Vice President Dick Cheney on Sunday, saying the Bush administration could have used some “dithering” before they invaded Iraq.
Will was responding to the VP’s widely-circulated comment that President Obama was “dithering” on Afghanistan and putting troops in danger. On the contrary, Will said, it was hasty decisions that put people at risk.
“A bit of dithering might have been in order before we went into Iraq in pursuit of non-existent weapons of mass destruction,” Will said on ABC’s “This Week. “For a representative of the Bush administration to accuse someone of taking too much time is missing the point. We have much more to fear in this town from hasty than from slow government action.”

I can feel this now: Dissatisfied adolescent, speaking in terms known only to a few, joins forces with Orly Taitz in a concerted effort to both change the face of the English language to one taught only in special education, Intelligent Design schools, and use this new language to force the President of the United States to reapply to Hawaii for a new birth certificate, which in fact states he was born not in Hawaii, but on a small island owned by members of the church of braided beards. (Ain’t run-on sentences fun?) The church members are a small, secretive band whose sole purpose is forcing all humans, male and female, to grow braided beards. Why they do this is unknown, but poses a direct threat to the security of the United States.
I have sent this to the Coen brothers for instant movie rights. . . . . waiting . . .

Another SP paranoia moment for me was when she refused to adhere to the VP debate’s standards and decided she would do what she wanted, not what was expected as part of a normal debate.
Proved once and for all that SP was not capable of being honest or ethical: it was “ my way or the highway” for SP.

There are very few things I enjoy about the RepoTaliban, but for at least 20 years their PR machine has consistently accused their opposition of doing and being what they do and are themselves.
I think it is part of conservative think that everyone thinks and acts like I do so if I hate, lie, steal, then so do they. If I act like Hitler, so must they,. If I try to destroy freedom, and the Constitution so must they be trying to do the same thing.
It makes their logic in many cases very transparent. That’s the part I enjoy. That they can’t see that and stop behaving so badly is the part I can’t enjoy.
I don’t know if this will work….This is sort of an ‘ experiment ‘ because I have never used Flicker and am trying to figure out how you can add, post and create the viewing Sets to share.

I did find this link saved by myself and this story was posted 9-1-08. Within a day of two of being selected by McCain. It sort of goes with the J.R. Dunn story also of this morning when J.R. thought people were picking on ‘ Poor Sarah’.

Me too – it’s one of the increasingly rare occasions that I’ve agreed with him since early 2008.
I’ve noticed that the angle that George Will leans to the right on Sunday morning seems to be directly related to his choice of tie style for that day:
Regular tie = 45-53 degree slant
Bowtie = damn near horizontal
The “translation” is hilarious and I rather like the language. Lol! I tried to pick my favorite part, and decided the whole thing is worthy of being faved.
