The Mudflats

Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Open Thread

It’s been a busy busy day. I had hoped to have a very special story to tell you in tonight’s open thread, but I’m afraid that my early rising this morning to go attend the Bill Allen sentencing has left me nodding off at the keys.

So, tomorrow, when I can do it justice, I’ll share a great story with you that contains – a mystery caller, a parcel from far away, a whole lot of amazing Mudpuppies, and a creation that will knock your boots off!

But in the mean time, share links, talk about the issues of the day, and enjoy.

I am going to repost the story I posted on the other Open Thread cause I think it is just so darn funny…. for many reasons. It really makes me laugh that Sarah’s Book ( her pride & joy ) might not be the Hot topic that day…and it’s 3 weeks away still.
AND… which Conservative leader do they listen to and support..? I see a storm brewing.
    ———————–
    Will Sarahs ” Ghostwriters book ” get overshadowed in the headlines and loose the story for the day.. Nov 17th..? { lets hope so}

That famous phrase applies here ” Houston… we have a problem”..?
And the problem is IN Houston on Book day. This could get interesting.

Cheney has come out and endorsed K.B Huchison for a fundraiser that he will attend that day. ( BUT… Sarah endorsed Gov Goodhair?) Oops.
Will the press talk about the quotes from the Former VP or some WasillaBillie.
    Order more popcorn… quickly.
    ———————
“AUSTIN, Texas — Former Vice President Dick Cheney will throw his support behind U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison’s campaign for Texas governor.

Hutchison’s campaign confirmed Wednesday that Cheney will endorse the Texas Republican’s March primary challenge of Gov. Rick Perry at a fundraiser next month.”

HuffPo. Once a possibility, now nothing but ash.

Madonna’s posted a Palin-worthy request for funds. To kick in and help fulfill the cash bargain she made with the government officials who overruled the adoption board.

HuffPo’s readers aren’t tame. And the fact that a rich and spoiled woman waltzed into a third-world country, pointed out a child that would be hers — when she got around to picking it up, a year later — then left, and didn’t return until it was convenient for her… well, there was dissatisfaction expressed. I remember the original reports of how many rules she simply ignored. Rules set in place to protect the child, to ensure that prospective adoptive parents truly understood what hardships the children they were adopting would be recovering from. The meetings and announcement of just how much money a famous woman was going to be donating — out of sheer goodwill, of course — and incidently, here’s a child for *her*. No need for all those silly ‘getting to know the child’ rules. Not for Madonna. She’s a busy woman, after all.

But this is about HuffPo. Where you can go read how Madonna would like you to donate to her cause — and then scroll down, and comment. But first, read the paens EVERY SINGLE COMMENT throw at the feet of this demanding shrew. Soak in her overwhelming qualities of goodness, mercy and devotion to family. We’re looking at another Mother Theresa.

And if you think otherwise, comment somewhere else.

It isn’t moderation. It’s absolute contempt for HuffPo’s supporters, and has been going on for months now. Go ahead and question the practice — the list of banned readers is now a who’s who of the more incisive readers — who are looking for a site that offers some hope of free speech.

To take your minds off the politics of the moment, we have NINE live healthy pups! We’re having to bottle feed them, because the vet wasn’t sure Katie would bring in milk. But those nine pups have hard at work and looks like the faucets are turning on.

Three of the twelve didn’t make it. Katie is a smaller Newfoundland and just couldn’t carry all to term.

We’re proud of her though! The rest of the pack want to tell her how to take care of them. They are not allowed to.

Once again, Palin divides the GOP. This time in Iowa, and it has to do with her speaking fees. A conservative group in Iowa wants to pay her 100 grand to come speak. It has some in the GOP balking about spending that kind of money on a politician. They say, most politicians consider it a privilege to come to Iowa (if they are serious about running for President) and are not asking for a huge speaking fee. Read more at link.

But, it also says she probably won’t appear. Meg S. says it’s just one of a thousand invitations Palin has to consider. Ya’, right.

Great quote from the Politico story about Palin in Iowa.

“If somebody tells me they want me to pay an appearance fee, it tells me they’re not very serious about running for president,” said Ed Failor, Jr., president of Iowans for Tax Relief and an influential GOP insider.

“I found it really, really odd,” Failor said.

    PaulaNo Gravatar says:

The effort also underlines how Palin straddles the line between politician and political personality.

Failor, the anti-tax advocate, said the only other examples he could recall when a group paid for a political speech were with big-name talk show hosts such as Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh.

But for Iowa political activists accustomed to high-profile politicians of both parties—Clintons, Kennedys and Bushs—descending on their state and spending hours in their homes, schools and churches, the idea of paying for the attention some see as their birthright is anathema.

Trisha @10 – I thought that was a great statement the guy made, it shows that others are actually aware of Palin’s money-grubbing tendencies. The fact that she hasn’t committed yet is probably because she wants to KNOW they have the $100,000 to pay her. Nasty of me………..but I hope that either they don’t raise the money, or that the group wakes up and decides to NOT pay her the outrageous fee for her rambling and hate-mongering speeches.

AlterNet has an article on Fox and their blatant attempts to bring down Obama and the progressive movement. There is a link in the article to sign a petition to Congress, urging them to rethink their actions of defunding Acorn.

“Tell your Congressperson: If you vote to extend the “Defund ACORN Act,” you’re just assisting FOX in their anti-American witch hunt.”

Just watched Levi on CBS. Although the interview was soft-spoken, a few of her questions appeared (at least to me) to be a bit aggressive and favoring Palin. I am glad Levi pointed out the Play Girl shoot was being done in good taste.

It also sounds “really, really odd” behavior for someone trying to flog a book. Any author worth their salt will get up at 3 a.m. to be on a radio call-in show, or will go speak before a group without an “appearance fee,” etc. Oh wait, $P didn’t actually write the book. Never mind!

And that angel graphic ACTUALLY APPEARS at one of $P’s fan sites! I wanted to tell Hansel and Gretel in the picture to run, run, they’re not very far from the gingerbread house, and it’s much safer to hang around with the witch who lives there…

BuffaloGal,GreatGranny2C,Paula: Yes, it was a great quote from Failor.

I used to live in Iowa and politicians spend tons of time and money in that state trying to woo the voters. They are NOT asking for speaking fees. Also too, any serious politician spends years in Iowa….traveling the state, going to small town hall meetings, talking to the voters, eating corn dogs at the State Fair, talking to farmers, etc. It’s not exactly glamorous, so Palin would think it’s below her. Plus, she would never work that hard.

Also, she would actually have to answer questions from Iowans regarding her policy plans for agriculture.

Palin would say, Agri Hoo? Is that like a Jimmy Choo shoe?

About the disclosure form; I have a question. Sarah Palin opened a business in April, 2009, that was designed to provide services to elderly and disabled (under the guise of bringing them pastries, I guess). At this time, wasn’t Alaska’s In Home Support Service program, program federally mandated to provide services to the elderly and disabled, being reviewed by the Centers for Medicare/Medicaid services? Weren’t they failing that review big-time? Didn’t the program get suspended shortly after Mrs. Palin quit, because it was so far out of compliance? I’m not a big conspiracy theorist, but I do see two big dots there that seem to be connected. Mrs. Palin is good at seeing opportunities for herself, and she had to be aware the IHSS was in trouble.

BuffGal – Saw that angel……to compare Palin as such?????

New Newfies – Congratulations on the new babies!!!

A couple of good articles on the Obamas today and they just reinforce my liking and respect for them. The first was their speaking of their marriage and that it is full of bumps and that it would be unfair to young people struggling in their own relationships to think that there are perfect marriages….. because there are not, and their’s is not perfect either. That shows the Obamas face reality and tell the truth, unlike another (in)famous couple who proclaim to have a perfect marriage.

The second article is about POTUS taking a middle of the night, unannounced trip to Dover AFB – he wasn’t looking for publicity as others likely would have. This action on his part is so different from the last 8 years where it couldn’t be publicly acknowledged that people were dying in the war zones. The ceremonial procedure has to be so difficult for everyone taking part. When my husband was active duty, he occasionally had burial duty of this nature and I saw the toll it took on him and others on the team. Reading this article brought me to tears and I expect it will affect others the same way.

I guess Palin believes she should have platform for her lies, but anyone who disagrees with her version of the truth SHOULDN’T be given any media attention.

Hey Palin, this ain’t N. Korea. Does she even know what country she lives in?

It’s also obvious that she still holds a grudge against CBS for her own failure in the Couric interview.

Wallflower, the big problem I see with that explanation is that running a legitimate business (or even fascimile thereof) would require WORK.

Right now my money is on Pie Spy being essentially a money laundering operation, with the money coming in from Sarah’s ATM – er, I mean AFT, and possibly from any public funding that would apply as well – to pay for Trig’s care and possibly his therapy. I’m willing to bet that Bristol is an employee, or on contract to provide at least some of those services, and I’ll bet she’s being paid a pretty penny for it too.

  25. 25
    trishaNo Gravatar says:

@20 wallflower: Wow….good point. Was Palin intentionally letting the program for the elderly and disabled crumble, so she could profit off of the elderly and disabled? I think this is an avenue that needs to be explored.

If people are concerned that their parents needs aren’t being met by the state, they might spend money to have someone check in on them.

I also find it odd that in the middle of an economic crisis and everything that Palin had going on in life, that she had the time to create side businesses. Something doesn’t smell right about this whole thing. Which is typical of the Palin’s.

  26. 26
    GreatGranny2CNo Gravatar says:

Trish @22 – I’m with you that Palin still angers over Katie Couric. The interview this morning (can’t remember her name as I rarely watch the show) mentioned that they had offered Palin a spot on the show many times and that she had refused. I think she and Liz Cheney are two of a kind. Rachel has offered Cheney a spot on her show countless times, and she’s too chicken to face a real interviewer who knows what she is talking about.

Any comments that aren’t pro-Palin rarely make it to any of the sites promoting her, and if they do, they are soon scrubbed. She refuses to be interviewed by anyone. The blogs where documented facts and controversial opinions can be posted are probably never read by her followers. So we have the same problem of getting info out about her, just as we do getting out the truth about Obama, health care, etc.

Those same fringe “mouthy” people only follow their own few sites like Fox, and will never see the light of day on anything. It seems some days, that we are losing the battle to make any progress on a whole lot of fronts. Maybe if us lefties were toting our guns around with us and being loudmouths, we might have more success……….but I don’t think I’ll bring myself down to their level of stupidity.

Got to say the political climate this year has been an interesting and educational one. And, it feel like SP’s true nature is coming to the light and is now being exposed……won’t be long now, IMO, and she’ll be filed in the history books as one nutty character. Snubbing invitations like Iowa and others is doing nothing to help her reputation. Verbally responding to a 19 year-old’s accusations on a morning show displays her unclassy, ungracious, un-genteel ladylike traits to the world.

Remember when SP was pouting about Caroline Kennedy’s handling by the media? She thought they were favoring America’s favorite rich girl, because of her heritage. But, the media was kind with Caroline, IMO, because Caroline has always acted like a graceful lady.

SP accuses media of unfair coverage of her, and would like us to think it’s because they are against small-town salt-of-the-earth folks, middle class hockey moms. Not. The blame game is over. She can’t hide forever behind her facades. Whoever is advising, or prepping her for her ambitions, must be pretty frustrated and ready to quit by now.

The “liberal” media being kind to Caroline Kennedy was a complete Sarah fabrication. There really isn’t a liberal bias, as media is owned by large corporations and their sponsors are large corporations. The liberal press, are independents like Grit TV, Democracy Now, The Nation.

Media coverage of Caroline was viscous with respect to her lack of experience. Instead of crying about the coverage like Palin does, Robert Kennedy Jr’s said, it comes with the job. Anyone seeking higher office and serving the public, should expect to be fully vetted.

I was reading comments over on CBS to a short piece Couric had written about the GOP being hijacked by the wingnuts and the GOP looking to restructure. All of the comments were filled with toxic hate, standard insults, etc. towards Katie. However , there was one lone voice of reason who suggested that the answer to rebuilding the Republican party revolved around looking at the world around us and seeing how many people are in need. Finding ways to be compassionate while still keeping to their core ideas. It was only a paragraph but such a good one.

I googled his name and found his twitter account and after reading a few entries I was smitten and inspired. This guy has an Italian specialties food store and restaurant/deli. Here are a few of his entries:

Apparently the way the categories are set up in Alaska code, a business providing services for the disabled OR for the elderly OR for both would all fall under the same section. So it’s possibly that Pie Sky LLC has nothing to do with providing care to elderly persons at all. On the other hand, if she wanted to provide services of some sort for her parents through this business, I sure that could be arranged in a manner satisfactory to her bank balances too.

    Anchorage:

Mayor Sullivan’s proposed operating budget for 2010 includes cuts across the board in (virtually) every department, including the total elimination of all local service (routes 76 and 77) in Eagle River/Chugiak, a fare increase, and a reduction of so-called “early morning/late evening” trips in the Anchorage bowl.

None of these changes are set in stone!!! The budget fight is (of course) a big deal, but one final (scheduled) public hearing on this issue is this Tuesday, 6:00 p.m., Loussac Library – Assembly Chambers, so there’s still time to speak in person next week or to call or write your assembly member (look here if you’re not sure of yours- http://www.muni.org/Departments/Assembly/HowDoI/Pages/ContactAssemblyMember.aspx) – to voice your opinion on the matter – the bigger the chorus, (hopefully) the better the results! :)

Unfortunately, by the time sufficient eyes were opened, it became harder to convince people of her unethical behavior. Then you look at the people who sat on the various commissions – all were cronies and appointed by her, so the chances of a fair hearing are next to nil.

I really don’t think she understands that she isn’t that bright and that her following, though extremely vocal, is small. Those followers and the MSM who still consider her a viable candidate in 2012, are nothing but enablers with goals of their own. If she was overweight and less physically attractive, she probably wouldn’t have made it as far as she has, because there are those who can only look at the package, not at what is inside it.

She may not make it onto the 2012 roster, but I don’t see her going quietly away, ever. She is one of those who will continue to bounce back and pop up in one arena or another. As long as she has the following, and the questionable sources of income, she’ll find a way to be in our faces….. unless some person or group of people finally come forward with proof of activities that can finally put her where she belongs.

Bystander; Agree. Her idea of charity and service is to quote caring, loving quotes about helping moms, disabled folks, all in vague short talking points.

Yet, she produces nada/nothing to prove that she believes these things. If she believes what she says, why hasn’t she organized town hall meetings in her town communities where she lives and get involved in having discussions about how to better service and support families with babies/disabilities (Down’s Syndrome, etc.) – pull up her sleeves and use her clout to implement ways to relieve burdens of these parents.

There’s plenty of need out there…….she was governor……..she should know……..what the urgent needs are……..every community needs improvements in the quality of life for those less fortunate. What about families with these special kids who don’t have the fortune of loving grandparents and who don’t fall into the high-bracket income – or homeless shelters……she could contribute in some of Gov. Parnell’s new efforts in these areas.

The truth is: S’Arah doesn’t want to do those boring things. Girls like her just want to have “fun” and be admired, and be whisked in a limo to speak for $100,000 – travel first class WITHOUT the sweat and tears of tedious work. The queen is much distracted about bigger things than serving her Party, her constituents, her Sarah teamsters. When are they going to see the light?

As I’ve said throughout this process, a public option that competes with private insurers is the best way to ensure choice and competition that are so badly needed in today’s market. Once again I am gobsmacked.

Sarah’s been invited to speak and as usual, her Meg has not confirmed, which IMO is extremely rude. It is less than one month before the event, the responsible and professional thing to do is confirm a yes and mean it, or tell them flat out, “Thank you, but no, she will not be able to speak as it conflicts with her book tour”. What on earth is wrong with her saying that right up front?

I hope TeamSarah members understand that their fundraising efforts are not really going to ‘secure’ Sarah as speaker, but going to the organization to help them put on their fundraiser, irregardless of who speaks. If they’re OK with that, I’m OK with that.

As for fees, it is not a known quantity what, if anything, the group has offered Sarah, but once again, her refusal to simply take the option or take the option off the table is, well, stupid. If she IS holding out for $75,000 or more, that is going to send a bad message to the people of Iowa.

How many times does she have to pull this stunt for people to get it? Hello, knock knock, Sarah Palin is unreliable. Invite her to speak at your own risk and have a Plan B ready to implement.

SayNo – Signed both petitions. My senator (McConnell) was one of the Dirty Thirty, so he probably will be against this as well. Lieberman should have been shown the door when he spoke at McCain’s convention and was so nasty about Obama.

Has anyone received an email from an uninformed family member regarding “Obama Phones” ? LOL, my Dad passed one along today, and thankfully, someone on the DL flamed him before I could respond. Its actually showcased on the frontpage of factcheck.org. (http://www.factcheck.org/2009/10/the-obama-phone/)

I decided to respond to him anyway – just him, left off everyone else from the original email – and tried to be kind. No need to upset the ‘rents (as my daughter would say), but posted the full article from factcheck, and also a little more info from usac.org, which is the organization that provides the funding umbrella for the telecommunication programs. Very intriguing for me … a little history lesson in fact.

I grew up in a rural area, and I took a moment to add a little “digg” in the email response that USAC had likely helped the schools, library, and people in my hometown. I suspect that the USAC programs provide a ton of help for our friends in AK too :)

    from http://www.usac.org
The Universal Service Fund is one fund with four programs. The four programs are:

•High Cost – This support ensures that consumers in all regions of the nation have access to and pay rates for telecommunications services that are reasonably comparable to those in urban areas.
•Low Income – This support, commonly known as Lifeline and Link Up, provides discounts that make basic, local telephone service affordable for more than 7 million low-income consumers.
•Rural Health Care – This support provides reduced rates to rural health care providers for telecommunications and Internet services so they pay no more than their urban counterparts for the same or similar telecommunications services.
•Schools & Libraries – This support, commonly referred to as E-rate support, provides affordable telecommunications and Internet access services to connect schools and libraries to the Internet. This support goes to service providers that provide discounts on eligible services to eligible schools, school districts, libraries, and consortia of these entities.

    ——
I used to live in Des Moines where the Wells Fargo Arena is located. I thought it was owned by the city. If so, I want to know why are they favoring a conservative group to host Sarah Palin by dropping their fees? I’m checking further to see who owns that facility now (maybe it’s private) but I would be screaming mad if the city were favoring a conservative group by offering special rates.

Levi went a little further, he said there were some damaging things that ‘could’ come out. He’s left the ‘I wouldn’t do that to her, wouldn’t want to hurt her’ mindset. And that yes, some things he knows could take her down.

I’m sure Scarah and Meg’s attack yesterday pushed him further from having any sympathy for her, good goin girls.

He did say, she would know what he’s talking about if she thought hard enough about it, hmmm. Scarah? what’s in the closet that Levi could possibly know about? hmmmm?

LOL, he’s talking fairly freely……oh, Scarah’s gonna be rant raving pissed! they’re rehashing all the stuff Levi has said. Bringing out more details.

That one of the first reactions from Scarah to the news of Bristol and Levi’s pregnancy was ‘this was really going to hurt her’ meaning politically and that she wasn’t none too happy about it.

And that yes, Scarah was serious about adopting the baby and that set both Bristol and Levi off about no way was that going to happen.
Can’t you just see Scarah’s frantic wheels churning on how to handle and spin this situation to protect her political future? you betchya.
He says Todd pretty much stayed out of that situation, clearly it was a Scarah political strategy he was willing to get involved in or in the middle of, which is typical for most normal guys.

When asked whether Scarah was aware and probably watching this interview. Levi says yeah, I’m sure she is, she probably is.

ET wonders whether Scarah will say things about Levi on Oprah. Levi doesn’t care.

I’m thinkin he could be surprised, I wouldn’t put it past her to dream up some damning stories. He may be naive about what she would do to smear him, but then again, he has dirt. If she’s willing to fabricate for her daughters pregnancy, just think what else is there.

He says he PAYS child support, talks to Bristol about 3 times a week making arrangements to have his child. But would like to see him more and may have to make that happen through going to court.

When asked if he’s still in love with Bristol, he says he’ll always have feelings for Bristol, she’s the mother of his child. As to whether Scarah had anything to do with breaking them up, he honestly says I don’t know and doesn’t know whether they’d still be together or whether they could get back together with Scarah in the picture.

When asked about affairs, he restates that Bristol thought Toad was having an affair.

Before commercial, it was said by the interviewer so this is a stare off between you and Scarah about who is going to blink first, Levi says yes, basically, when asked who is going to win, Levi says he’s not going to lose.

Scarah must be breaking things, run and hide Piper, Bristol and Todd, lol.

There’s more to come……..I guess tomorrow night? about whether divorce is possible.

@ 87 Say No to Palin in Politics, Lots to think about in your post. I do think she is working an angle. Isn’t she always working an angle?

It’s what con artists do. They con.

I want to know why she wasn’t (as governor) working to fix the problems with home health care for the elderly and disabled? She ignored the problems to the point that the federal government had to step in. Yet, at the same time, instead of using her energy to help these people get the care they deserve….she is creating a business that would charge them to get the care they deserve. Or, at least, charge families to have someone check in on these individuals.

Saw video clips tonight on the news of President Obama at Dover AF Base where the 18 soldiers killed in Afghanistan were returned home early this morning. He went into the plane, said a prayer and then stood on the tarmac with some officers and saluted as the caskets were taken off the plane.

Very classy and heartfelt move by our president. Not a big media circus…just a special moment to honor the ultimate sacrifice of our military. SUCH a difference from the scene in an un-earned flightsuit on an aircraft carrier in front of a “Mission Accomplished” banner!

A local solder killed in Iraq was buried yesterday and many people, mostly strangers, stood in the pouring rain along the street near the cemetery, holding flags as the funeral procession passed. It’s comforting to know that President Obama cares enough about our military to take the time to personally honor the soldiers and their families who have given so much for our country.

This from the Springfield (MO) News Leader; Sarah Palen delivering on character education is like George Bush delivering on motivation:

‘Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will speak on patriotism, citizenship and civic engagement at College of the Ozarks at 7 p.m. Dec. 2 in the Keeter Gymnasium, a college news release said.

“Sarah Palin is a great example of an individual who became involved in her small town community and whose efforts and success eventually placed her in the national spotlight,” said Sue Head, executive director of The Keeter Center for Character Education. “We are looking forward to hosting her at the college.” ‘

    From Congressional Quarterly:

    Palin’s Numbers Mirror Quayle
Brendan Nyhan looks at recent “gruesome poll numbers” for Sarah Palin and notes that perceptions of her qualifications “are unprecedented among presidential/vice presidential nominees and major presidential contenders in recent years. From Joe Biden to George W. Bush, no one has been perceived as less qualified since Dan Quayle and Ross Perot. The Palin-Quayle parallel, which Jon Chait nailed soon after her nomination, is particularly striking. Each was a surprise VP pick who sparked initial enthusiasm but later became widely perceived as incompetent.”

Hey Alaska Mudflatters – the Northern Lights are out tonight!
I didn’t see them once last winter, so it is great to see them once again.
Thin, green ribbons of light tonight, dancing across the sky north of Kenai.
One ribbon is turning itself into a green light saber at times!
I once saw them at St. Mary’s, and I could almost reach out and touch them.
