Owens Takes New York’s 23rd District (Recipe Included)

Thought I’d share a newly developed recipe for Elephant Upside-Down Surprise Cake.

First you take a congressional district that has had Republican representation in the U.S. House of Representatives since before the Civil War, then add a teabag, pour on some hot steamin’ Sarah Palin, add a squeeze of Rush Limbaugh, then carefully strain the mixture until there is no trace of the moderate Republican.  Then just wait and watch. Pretty soon you’ll have….Surprise! A Democrat!

There you go folks. Dems across the land can now send thank you notes to Our Lady of Perpetual Meddling. Can’t wait to find out whose fault THIS one is going to be.

Republican Sweep NJ, VA Governors Races
Former U.S Attorney Chris Christie (R-N.J.) ousted New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine (D) tonight, delivering Republicans a sweep of the two gubernatorial contests on the ballot today.

With more than three quarters of all votes counted, Christie led Corzine 50 percent to 44 percent, according to tabulations from the AP.

Christie’s victory was the more closely-fought of the two races as Corzine moved from a double-digit deficit into a small lead in the final weeks of the campaign. But, the collapse of independent candidate Chris Daggett, who was taking just five percent of the vote with 75 percent of precincts reporting, and the broad distaste for Corzine among the state’s voters doomed the incumbent.

Corzine’s loss comes on top of a stunningly large defeat for Virginia state Sen. Creigh Deeds (D) at the hands of former state Attorney General Bob McDonnell (R). (McDonnell is only the third candidate for governor in Virginia history to win more than one million votes; George Allen was the first in 1993 and Tim Kaine was the second in 2005.)

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I) held a narrow 49 percent to 47 percent edge over New York City Comptroller Bill Thompson (D) with 68 percent of precincts reporting. That the race was so close given Bloomberg’s massive spending edge — he reportedly dropped $100 million on the race — may well be a testament to the anti-incumbent mood in the country.

In the upstate New York special election to fill the seat vacated by Secretary of the Army John McHugh, Democrat Bill Owens led Conservative party nominee Doug Hoffman 51 percent to 44 percent with just under one-third of precincts reporting.

Chris Christie won in NJ. Issues here were high property taxes and unemployment. 60% polled said Obama’s administration not a factor on their voting and 57% approval for the President. Christie’s campaign did not want Sarah Palin to stump for him. They knew that if she did it would hurt him with the voters. $P not well liked in this state. While there are still a lot of votes to be counted, Phillip Anderson at The Albany Project is calling NY-23:

With about 70% in, Owens lead continues to grow. Unless Hoffman has many thousands of votes stashed in the St Lawrence county districts where they are having machine problems, I just don’t see how he beats Owens. Does Hoffman have a secret Watertown Palinite contingent? I doubt it.

I think the next Congressman from NY-23 is Bill Owens.

The conservative voters of NY-23 would rather have a Democrat than your whackjob crazy train! The moderate Republican probably would have won if not for Palin’s interference.

In the overall scheme of national politics, this local race was not very important but in the scheming brain of Palin and her fans, it was critical. It was a barometer of her influence and she failed…..miserably.

It also means that Palin is the black widow of electoral politics. Every campaign she touches dies. Who will want her endorsement now? Yep. 95% of Hoffman’s campaign contributions were from outside the district, in good part from Palin’s fans once she stuck her nose into that race. It would have outraged me if outside interests were pimping out my local election for their own agenda. Apparently, the voters of NY-23 felt the same way. No one wants to feel manipulated. I read a story today that said NY-23 has over a 15 point margin with the registered GOP voters there. So Hoffman basically had a 15 point Lead to start
Even if he lost 10% points there he should have won by a 5% margin.
Based on just the numbers … he should of won… and he DIDn’T.
He was bitten by the ” Palin Curse “. GOP for over a 100 years…History created.

Now, Maine, on the other hand – I just don’t understand. What a heartbreak. I hope the new studies that are coming out about the children of same-sex marriages being no different emotionally, psychologically or otherwise from traditional marriages will educate more people – because it IS about protecting the children, now, isn’t it? (snark) And, they show that these children are frequently better grounded and less likely to have difficulties than children from traditional marriages.

Since two decades before the Civil War? The GOP was founded less than five years before the war began. Mea culpa on the date/party. I’ll change that. As far as Scozzafava goes, she was obviously good enough for Newt Gingrich. The GOP is splitting down the middle. Eisenhower would be regarded as a Democrat today. So it’s all relative. Obviously Scozzafava would have won the election and held the seat, and the people on the ground wanted someone who actually understood local issues and wasn’t just a poster boy for national conservative “values.” AKM
