Owens Takes New York’s 23rd District (Recipe Included)
3 11 2009
Thought I’d share a newly developed recipe for Elephant Upside-Down Surprise Cake.
First you take a congressional district that has had Republican representation in the U.S. House of Representatives since before the Civil War, then add a teabag, pour on some hot steamin’ Sarah Palin, add a squeeze of Rush Limbaugh, then carefully strain the mixture until there is no trace of the moderate Republican. Then just wait and watch. Pretty soon you’ll have….Surprise! A Democrat!
There you go folks. Dems across the land can now send thank you notes to Our Lady of Perpetual Meddling. Can’t wait to find out whose fault THIS one is going to be.

Doing the happy dance over here. What good news to wake up to!!!
November 4th, 2009 at 12:49 AM
Happy news from NY, but it’s looking very sad in Maine for our brothers and sisters who are still seeking to have their basic human rights recognized.
November 4th, 2009 at 3:44 AM
Well, this was very satisfying news to wake up to this morning. It’s a distinct slap in the face to Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck and their ilk. Not, of course, that they will give up trying, but, just the same sanity wins a victory today!
Now, Maine, on the other hand – I just don’t understand. What a heartbreak. I hope the new studies that are coming out about the children of same-sex marriages being no different emotionally, psychologically or otherwise from traditional marriages will educate more people – because it IS about protecting the children, now, isn’t it? (snark) And, they show that these children are frequently better grounded and less likely to have difficulties than children from traditional marriages.

Newt was right on this originally until he got scared. He said that the good folks in the 23rd didnt need any help picking a R candidate. Newt, how do you like your choice now? friggin idiots got their azzes handed to them thanks to s’arah. Lets see how she plays from here.
Advise to the Coach, BENCH HER! Or not…let her do some more endorsin’ for our sake and amusemnet!

Self-fulfilling prophecy
This only goes to prove that the wingnuts were right all along: Moderate Republicans can’t be trusted! They must be purged at all costs.
November 4th, 2009 at 6:24 AM
Of all the races last night this one was practically written off as Hoffman’s from the start, so it was so awesome to hear that Owen, a Democrat won for the 1st time since the Civil War!!!
Thank God Sarah’s goin’ rogue backfired! Maybe this will shut her down for awhile until she concocts her next scheme from her kitchen table on Facebook. The conservatives may have the loudest and most obnoxious voices in the GOP, but even a very red district has rejected them!!!!
November 4th, 2009 at 6:27 AM
I think this means more than two governors who’s state”s swap parties every other election it seems.
How much more will the value of the king maker drop in the next year.
November 4th, 2009 at 6:31 AM
Oh, and one news clip I watched said it was the first for a Dem in 16 years. Do you think leaving off the zero changes the story at all?
November 4th, 2009 at 6:55 AM
I had decided that NJ and VA were probably going to go Red so I was nonchalant about those 2 races.
But NY-23rd – now that was the one I watched =) Especially since KO had a segment last night with teabaggers all over my TV screen. Ew.
So now, please indulge me while I engage in a Wicked Witch of the West cackle!! HHAHAHAHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHH!!!
I’ll get you my pretty! And your little……Meg too!
November 4th, 2009 at 6:57 AM
And oh, the irony! A million dollars from Club for Growth + Sarah Palin + Tim Pawlenty + Rush Limbaugh + Glenn Beck + Fred Thompson + Teabaggers from everywhere but the District voting = First Democrat in the seat since before the Civil War.
Awesome. Keep it up Sarah!
Palin 2012 – 2014 1/2!

The comments here are priceless!
I join the chorus of “Thank you New Yorkers!” for showing us that Sanity will prevail!
BTW – Does Sarah Palin not get “subtle” hints?
2008: Hey America, let me be your VP! America: No.
2009: Hey NY-23rd Americans, Vote for MY GUY! NY-23rd: NO!

Paging flyinyoureye see Aussiegal #115″ I’ll get you my pretty, and your little Meg too!”
Can’t you see Sarah as Dorothy, and Meg as Toto, surrounded by the Wicked Witch and the flying monkeys? (apologies to Toto, who is kinda’ cute.)

rebekkah: let me join you! HEE!HEE!
November 4th, 2009 at 8:54 AM
“who’s fault is it?”
Answer: That pesky little detail called “registered voters”. Hoffman couldn’t even vote for himself, much less any of those teabaggers who were bussed in to electioneer at polling places.
November 4th, 2009 at 8:57 AM
I cheered in my car on the way to work this morning when NPR announced this win. Then I virtually thumbed my nose at $P. Can’t wait for the spin.
Everything she touches turns to CRAP. Literally and figuratively!
Thank you Upper NY Staters for having brains they thought you didn’t.
November 4th, 2009 at 8:57 AM
According to RedState, this is a huge win for conservatives.
November 4th, 2009 at 9:35 AM
Since two decades before the Civil War? The GOP was founded less than five years before the war began. And BTW, how far to the left does a Republican have to be before she’s no longer a “moderate?” She was pro-choice, pro-SSM, pro-bailout, and in favor of abolishing the secret ballot for union elections, etc. Otherwise, your post was spot-on.
Mea culpa on the date/party. I’ll change that. As far as Scozzafava goes, she was obviously good enough for Newt Gingrich. The GOP is splitting down the middle. Eisenhower would be regarded as a Democrat today. So it’s all relative. Obviously Scozzafava would have won the election and held the seat, and the people on the ground wanted someone who actually understood local issues and wasn’t just a poster boy for national conservative “values.” AKM

November 4th, 2009 at 11:35 AM
By the time Palin’s book is released……..we might just get PAID to order one……….lol
Rupert Murdoch does love to throw his money away sometimes!
It makes you wonder why Oprah would take the time to interview the author of a book so obviously insignificant.
Oh yeah…….ratings……………

This election just goes to show McQuittyPants and the right wingy nuts not only can’t/don’t read, they can’t add either.
I knew her guy would lose soon as she said, ” Vote my Values.” Since her value is quittin,’ the voters did just that……quit votin’. Pooky quit.
November 4th, 2009 at 12:38 PM
omg…this is just beautiful….”Elephant Upside-Down Surprise Cake”……no wonder i love reading your blog…just so colorful with words and phrases….keep it up…..lol
November 4th, 2009 at 12:45 PM
It’s scary that wing(ex)nut Hoffman could make it even close against a locally well-known ex-military “moderate” Democrat. Fort Drum (huge employer — keep the federal funds coming!) and Adirondack Park (the gd guvment can’t tell ME where I can’t hunt, cut trees, or build my cabin! — sounds like Alaska, eh? But with more snow!) are THE issues in the NY 23rd, yet even tho Hoffman knew nothing about them the carpet-tea-bagging whackos drummed up enough support to bring him within 4 percentage points of a victory. No, the Palinistas won’t count this as a defeat, but only as encouragement to try harder next time.
November 4th, 2009 at 2:12 PM
Whew. Have to thank Sarah for her “support”. All the pundits were betting on a Hoffman win and all the wingnuts were rooting for him, but despite that, we in the 23rd district won by electing Owens. Thanks, again, Sarah, please keep supporting GOP candidates, thus assuring that sane people with functioning brains of either party will vote the opposite of your recomendations.
