Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

The Great Coin Conspiracy & How Palin Helps the Democratic Party

disturbingtrend

Obama Campaign Manager David Plouffe has been outspoken lately about former VP candidate and almost-one-term governor Sarah Palin.

Last week he recounted that:

“Obama and I had a long talk late that afternoon to evaluate Palin. ‘I just don’t understand how this ends up working out for McCain,’ he said. ‘In the long term, I mean. The short term will be good for them. But when voters step back and analyze how he made this decision, I think he’s going to be in big trouble.”

A very cool and analytical response from Barack Obama. I like to think that after all the dropping of coffee cups and the scraping of chins off the floor, and the ripping out of large clumps of hair, that’s how Alaskan Democrats felt too.

Yesterday, Plouffe spoke to the San Francisco Chronicle.

I think she’ll be most helpful to the Democratic Party with a high profile,” Plouffe quipped. “I hope her book tour lasts two years.” Palin’s book hits shelves Nov. 17.

Palin case in point: Over the weekend, Palin appeared at an anti-abortion rights fundraiser in Wisconsin. She banned media — or even anyone from bringing cell phones or other recording devices inside. Nonetheless, Politico snuck a few reporters inside the old fashioned way: By paying the $30 entry fee.  Their reward?  The Rogue gave them some fresh material.

Mudflats’ Boots on the Ground reporter “E” was there too, taking notes and getting out the first report on the event right here, including Palin’s recounting of a story cited by Plouffe in which she talks about a dollar coin.

I looked at it for a long time and then compareed it to another original coin and noticed that the words “In God We Trust” are pushed to the side, off to the very edge. Who makes a decision like that? It may be irrelevant to lots of people, but it’s a sign of a disturbing trend to me.  It worries me …  Because it is in God we trust. That’s the basis of our country.

We are led to believe that somehow the Democrats and Obama are to blame.  A quick fact check tells us that no, in fact it was then-President George W. Bush and the Republicans in Congress who literally marginalized God in 2005.

That’s why Plouffe said that when Palin is carrying the GOP banner, the party appeals to a smaller slice of the USA. “This is not where Middle America is,” Plouffe said.

[h/t Ink & Snow for the great cartoon!]

UPDATE:

Wow.  Even Fox News is fact-checking and correcting Palin’s coin conspiracy!

    Palin will become very frustrated w/ her book tour. As someone who likes to attend book signing and talk with authors, she will be unable to control her enviroment, let alone the public. She will have to put up with people who ask her questions. She will find this most unpleasant as not everyone will be a fan of hers. I hope she gets flooded with people being polite and excersising control but asking her tough questions and discarding her answers. She needs admirers and she will certainly have some but she will get her share of people who will show her a point of view she will not like. Soooo true! (Can I get an Amen?!?!?!)

    Many religious organizations are so concerned about the superficial trappings, the power they wield, and their own narrow-minded and inflexible view of the world, that they forget the original point of most religions…to be a good person, be nice to each other and help someone who needs help. Kinda like what we teach our kindergarten kids in school!

    Our five-year-olds have a much better grasp on the ‘golden rule’ than most of these ‘devout’ Christians. And when they ARE mean to each other, they usually acknowledge it, apologize and try to do better the next time, not blame someone else!

    Oh wait, that’s not the church YOU go to? Too bad. Following the great religiosity wars of 2010, you no longer have any choice. Once the great unwashed masses figured out that freedom OF religion also means freedom FROM religion, it was decided that the founding fathers had it all wrong and the constitution was changed to eliminate that pesky shortcoming.

    Rest easy though. It really isn’t a problem to no longer have the freedom to believe as you want. Why would anyone want the freedom to be WRONG. We just force all to believe the TRUTH and execute those who persist in their wrongness.

    I think I know what Sarah is subtly referring to with the coin. She and others like her would have us believe Democrats are trying to take away christian rights, by slowly taking away prayer in schools, the word “God” on coins, etc.

    While Revelation teaches that Satan wants to set up a one world order, one world government, currency, religion, economy…… fringies, who believe the many fear-mongering christian books that have been written, believe that socialism is one tool the enemy(Satan) will use to usher in unsuspecting people. Everyone depends more and more on government, and suddenly, right when they least expect it, a charismatic leader comes on the scene and takes over. Hence, the mark he imposes for all to take on their hand or forehead; and if they don’t accept it, they can’t buy or sell without it.

    If they take the mark (666), they have given allegiance to him and can’t back out. Christianity of course refers to this character as the Anti-christ.
    However, deceptive pastors, con artist conservative leaders and megalomaniac self-righteous politicians take this opportunity to use, scare and abuse and fabricate lies (stop making stuff up) for their political purposes. Since some fringies are paranoid and think that they can stop a progression towards a nonchristian state, they play right into the hands of those like Sarah, Michele Bachman, etc. Sarah seems to only care about power, money, and wears a mask for her base. How long will it take for them to figure it out?

    Just to say there are some good fringies out there, intelligent, non-aggressive ones who love people, do good, volunteer in community service. Christians were never commanded to push the gospels on anyone, no coercion, not compromising it’s message with corrupt kings, or governments. A word on a coin is not going to impress God, I agree with Aussiegal77. It’s what’s in our hearts every day that matters.

    But the Tampa Police report offered a far different account, saying Marakis was lost when he followed Bruce into the garage and asked for help, then was struck with the tire iron and chased several blocks. When officers arrived, Bruce called Marakis a terrorist and said the priest had shouted “Allahu akbar!” â Arabic for “God is great.”

    Tampa Police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said Bruce made no mention of a sexual attack in his 911 call, referencing it later when officers arrived, after offering other excuses for the bloodied man. “One was that he tried to rob him. The other was that he was an Arab terrorist and shouted “Allahu akbar” and he explained that ‘That’s what they say before they blow you up.’ And then he said that he grabbed his genitals and wanted to have sex with him. He gave various accounts of what happened,” she said.

    Bruce was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon but released from jail on bond.

    Marakis was treated at an area hospital and released.

    Marakis, 29, is visiting from Crete, Greece, and had attended a blessing just before the incident, according to police. Reached at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Tarpon Springs on Monday, he did not appear to understand inquiries about the attack.

    “While Revelation teaches that Satan wants to set up a one world order, one world government, currency, religion, economy…”

    No. It doesn’t. Human beings teach that that’s what it means. There’s a critical difference there. The original writing, the context in which it was written, and the applied interpreted meaning.
    It’s quite possibly nothing more than the psychotic delusions of one man, thousands of years ago. It’s the visions that John experienced which have now been interpreted for the listening audience, depending on who’s in the pulpit, of course. Along the lines of Ellen White (Seventh-Day Adventist) and Brigham Young.

    Martin Luther said: “Christ is neither taught nor known in it.”
    Preface to the Revelation of St. John (1522)
    About this book of the Revelation of John, I leave everyone free to hold his own opinions. I would not have anyone bound to my opinion or judgment. I say what I feel. I miss more than one thing in this book, and it makes me consider it to be neither apostolic nor prophetic.

    First and foremost, the apostles do not deal with visions, but prophesy in clear and plain words, as do Peter and Paul, and Christ in the gospel. For it befits the apostolic office to speak clearly of Christ and his deeds, without images and visions. Moreover there is no prophet in the Old Testament, to say nothing of the New, who deals so exclusively with visions and images. For myself, I think it approximates the Fourth Book of Esdras; 8 I can in no way detect that the Holy Spirit produced it.

    Moreover he seems to me to be going much too far when he commends his own book so highly — indeed, more than any of the other sacred books do, though they are much more important — and threatens that if anyone takes away anything from it, God will take away from him, etc. Again, they are supposed to be blessed who keep what is written in this book; and yet no one knows what that is, to say nothing of keeping it. This is just the same as if we did not have the book at all. And there are many far better books available for us to keep.

    Many of the fathers also rejected this book a long time ago; although St. Jerome, to be sure, refers to it in exalted terms and says that it is above all praise and that there are as many mysteries in it as words. Still, Jerome cannot prove this at all, and his praise at numerous places is too generous.

    Finally, let everyone think of it as his own spirit leads him. My spirit cannot accommodate itself to this book. For me this is reason enough not to think highly of it: Christ is neither taught nor known in it. But to teach Christ, this is the thing which an apostle is bound above all else to do; as Christ says in Acts 1, “You shall be my witnesses.” Therefore I stick to the books which present Christ to me clearly and purely.

    One more time: “…let everyone think of it as his own spirit leads him.”

    Mean-spirited negative individuals will naturally use it to rationalize scary horrible things. Full of pain and punishment.
    Positive, optimistic light-hearted souls will spin something more friendly.

    How’d you like to leave it up to Jerry Prevo to tell us what it means?

    I work with a very religious woman who is truly the best kind of Christian. She is kind and caring to everyone, tries very hard to be positive and not say an mean word to or about anyone. She is the first to help someone else and NEVER curses (sure makes me a lot more conscious of my own vocabulary when I’m with her!).

    And yet, she never pushes her beliefs on anyone else and respects other’s desires to follow different faiths or none at all. MarthaNo Gravatar says:

    America should go back to E Pluribus Unum, since it was used for ….172 years….. before….”in God we trust”, used for a mere …….53 years.:

    History

    The motto E Pluribus Unum (Latin for “One from many” or “One from many parts.”) was approved for

    use on the Great Seal of the United States in 1782. It still appears on coins and currency, and was

    widely considered the national motto de facto. However, by 1956 it had not been established so by

    legislation as the official “national motto”.

    The Congressional Record of 1956 reads: “At the present time the United States has no national motto.

    The committee deems it most appropriate that ‘In God we trust’ be so designated as U.S. national motto.”

    One possible origin of In God We Trust is the final stanza of The Star-Spangled Banner. Written in 1814 by Francis Scott Key (and later adopted as the U.S. national anthem), the song contains an early reference to a variation of the phrase: “…And this be our motto: ‘In God is our trust’.”

    Use on coins and currency

    As excerpted from the United States Treasury Department’s public education website:

    The motto In God We Trust was placed on United States coins largely because

    of increased religious sentiment existing during the American Civil War.

    Secretary of Treasury Salmon P. Chase received many appeals from devout

    Christians throughout the country, urging the United States recognize God on

    United States coins.

    Wikipedia
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    A little bit about Chase:
    I find it telling that, whilst he insisted on inserting God onto and into everything, he had no compunction putting his own face on the dollar bill to boost his chance for POTUS.
    He would fit in perfectly with the rightwing nuts of today, spouting religion while chasing power with an uncontrollable lust, that knows no bounds and has no conscience.
    There is no mention here of “many appeals from devout Christians”.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Chase was smitten by a malady that would plague him the rest of his life, ‘presidential fever’. He tried to secure the presidential nomination of the first republican convention in 1856 but failed. Trying for the nomination again in 1860 Chase felt he was entitled to the republican presidential nomination.

    Failing to muster even the support of the Ohio Delegation Chase lost the nomination to Illinois Senator Abraham Lincoln.

    Lincoln made the comment about Chase, “I prefer him to myself; for Doctor Branford says Governor Chase combines greater executive, administrative and high statesmanlike ability than any man living.”9

    Ohio, however, preferred Chase in the US Senate in 1860, and returned him there as a republican.

    In the campaign of 1863 Treasury Secretary Chase would try unsuccessfully to replace Lincoln on the republican ticket.

    During the Impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson, 1868, the democrats began to solicit Chief Justice Chase as a presidential candidate.

    Chase was not opposed to a democratic nomination if that party accepted universal suffrage.

    Two days after being sworn as senator for the second time Chase resigned to accept the offer of Secretary of Treasury from the newly elected president Abraham Lincoln.

    Chase brought to the office his fear of monopolies, distrust of bankers, a preference for revenue tariffs and a belief in hard money. His principles would be tested by an empty treasury coffer and a long civil war that would cost the nation more than twenty billion dollars.

    Professing a total ignorance of financial matters, Lincoln placed the entire problem of financing the Civil War to Salmon Chase. The Treasury Secretary would issue create the Internal Revenue Division and adopt a national banking system in attempts to keep the nation from going bankrupt.

    Against his beliefs, and believing that issuing greenbacks to be unconstitutional, but with the debts from the war mounting and not being paid, Chase lobbied the congress to pass the Legal Tender Acts of 1862 and 1863.

    This enabled the printing of paper money as a legal substitute for gold and silver for pre-existing debts including taxes, internal duties, personal debts, and excise taxes. debts.

    After the war as Chief Justice, Chase would disown his own offspring and declare the Legal Tender Acts unconstitutional.

    ‘In God We Trust’ was printed on every piece of U.S. currency for the first time in 1864 by order of the Secretary of the Treasury.

    The face of the Treasury Secretary graced the one dollar dominations.

    The most common of the bills, it was the one the public was most like to possess. Thereby keeping Mr. Chase’s image in the mind of the potential voters in the next presidential elections. He was nick named ‘Old Mr. Greenbacks.’

    While Lincoln admired Chase’s financial genus, relations between the two men were never cordial. Lincoln’s goal was to preserve the Union at all costs. Chase would not comprise on the abolition of slavery for all states.

    ‘And upon this act, sincerely believed to be an act of justice, warranted by the Constitution, upon military necessity, I invoke the considerate judgment of all mankind, and the gracious favor of Almighty God.’

    The last line of the Emancipation Proclamation was written by Chase at the suggestion of Lincoln when Chase called to the President’s attention that there was no mention of the Deity.10

    A devout religious man, Chase read the Bible every day and sought comfort from the loss of his wives and children in God.

    “Because it is in God we trust. That’s the basis of our country”

    If our country started in 1864 when it first appeared or in 1956 when it was called our national motto. How can someone who thinks the earth is a few thousand years old think US started in 1956.

    To whom asked about an Alaskan “putting a stake through Palin’s heart”.
    First off she is no longer Alaska’s problem, perhaps you can find someone in New York, Hollywood or whereever her $7 million advance gets her. I certain hope that America is wised up enough that her sales don’t garner her more.
    Second, good luck finding a heart to stake it is more elusive then a brain in that woman.
    There is even more of a Palin coin story that never got covered. While governor she had a choice of the art on the Alaska statehood quarter: 1. There was the dog sledder in the foot hills of Denali 2. There was a polar bear. 3. And a grizzly bear.
    With Alaska being the only state to have polar bears I thought it obvious which to choice. But Palin in her denial of the plite of the polarbear choice not to bring any attention to this dieing Alaskan mammal and of the equally vanishing polar ice.

Wonder art but less of a statement about Alaska then the polar bear would have been. And like I said that why she chose it.
