Palin to Media – “Quit Findin’ Things Out!”

15 11 2009

Well Palin’s book is not even out yet, but the dam has burst.  The floodgates are open.  The rogue has hit the fan.

Why?  Because something has happened that Sarah Palin, her ghostwriter Lynn Vincent and her editor never anticipated.  That darn media is at it again, only this time they’ve sunk to a new low.  They have stooped to … fact checking.  It’s these kinds of ambush, gotcha, guerilla tactics that keep good decent people from writing works of historical fiction and marketing them as memoirs.  It’s a disturbing trend.

It’s hard to keep up with the tide of information, leaks, commentary, and debunking going on, but here is some catch up material for those of you who have other things you’ve been doing in your life than keeping up with the latest Palin revelations.

Associated Press – They not only have a fact-checker, they have a team of fact-checkers.  And it didn’t take long before all kinds of things didn’t pass the truth test.  Campaign donations, fancy hotels, the stimulus package, Alaska’s natural gas pipeline (they’re going to get started on that any year now), it’s all here.

People Magazine – Palin tells Barbara Walters that they were “devastated” when they heard the news of Bristol’s pregnancy.   And 15-year old Willow, one of the children that Sarah Palin has tried desperately to keep away from the glare of the media spotlight appears in the interview telling Walters that she thinks if her mother became President, it would be “cool.”

Associated Press – Hillary Clinton, who has never met Sarah Palin, thinks it would be interesting to sit and have coffee with her.  Clinton was responding to a passage in Going Rogue about Clinton that says  ”I know that we would fundamentally disagree on many issues.” But Palin says, “my hat is off to her hard work on the 2008 campaign trail.”  I’d like to be a fly in that Starbucks.

The New York Times Book Review – They are not impressed.  My favorite quote?  “All in all, Ms. Palin emerges from “Going Rogue” as an eager player in the blame game, thoroughly ungrateful toward the McCain campaign for putting her on the national stage. As for the McCain campaign, it often feels like a desperate and cynical operation, willing to make a risky Hail Mary pass in order to try to score a tactical win, instead of making a considered judgment as to who might be genuinely qualified to sit a heartbeat away from the Oval Office.”  Yup.

The Daily Dish – Andrew Sullivan muses about the fact that “The Thrilla from Wasilla” was an obsessive reader of his blog, and contemplated suing him for libel, but decided against it because of the negative publicity it might bring.  Indeed.  Like the negative publicity she’ll get from writing this book?  Sources also say that Palin obsessively read Alaska blogs as well, but kudos to Mr. Sullivan for coming up with the coveted shout out. (waves to Andrew Sullivan)  With all this blog obsessing, when on Earth did she have time to run the state effectively?  Oh, wait…

The Swamp – “Palin Unbottled.”  A good wrap up of the book that is described as one long complaint about the McCain campaign, and its staffers.  After a strange diatribe about the campaign’s penchant for Atkins diet bars, she recounts the reaction to the infamous prank call from a fake President Nicholas Sarkozy.  ”Right away, the phones started ringing. One of the first calls was [Steve] Schmidt, and the force of his screaming blew my hair back. “How can anyone be so stupid?! Why would the president of France call a vice presidential candidate a few days out?!”    And here’s where it starts to get really interesting.

The Huffington Post - In an article by Sam Stein, we learn that the aforementioned Steve Schmidt, apparently incensed by Palin’s liberal use of the literary device “makin’ things up” has released not one, not two, but three emails that controvert claims that Palin made in her book.  It seems that the screaming at Palin that “blew [her] hair back” was directed at staffers, not Palin and happened in an email, not in person.  Staffers call the excerpts from the book “a serious mixing of truth and imagination.”

Geoffrey Dunn – One of those who is writing a book on Palin that you’ll actually want to read tells a similar story, quoting Schmidt as calling Palin’s assertions in Going Rogue “total fiction.”  “To read Sarah Palin’s shockingly shallow Going Rogue,” says Dunn, ”one is immediately struck by how nasty and vindictive Palin is, and that her book is little more than a veiled mechanism for settling scores with old foes who have triumphed over her throughout Palin’s lifetime.”

Meanwhile back in Alaska…

Blue Oasis -  There’s more than one Palin book on the shelves, and here we find an analysis of how Sarah from Alaska, The Persecution of Sarah Palin, and Going Rogue handle the topic of the ethics complaints filed against her, the state records requests, and her tangle with the Alaska Public Offices Commission – all the wonky stuff that doesn’t have the titilating gossip factor, but actually matters a whole lot more.  There’s no one better than Linda Kellen Biegel at picking apart the details and giving a great analysis of this tangled mess.

Just a Girl from Homer - One of the plaintiffs in the Exxon Valdez oil spill case,  Shannyn Moore notes, “So Sarah was against the decision before she couldn’t remember it before she was for it.  And now, courtesy of Going Rogue, Sarah Palin manages to insult and injure Alaskans who will never be made whole with yet another one of her documented lies.”  Videos included.

The Anchorage Daily News – We will not forget.  They may wish we would forget, but we will not.  We are a pit bull.  Too many out there are watching and waiting for Palin’s emails that were requested via state records requests, to be revealed.  The law is clear, and the state is breaking it – over, and over, and over.  Palin is gone, and now the big mess she left has been dumped squarely in the lap of the next administration who continues to stall.  Paul Jenkins speculates that “enterprising young lawyers will have to haul the state into court for failure to obey its own law.”

I could go on. And on.  And by the time today is over, there will be a whole new set of articles to take its place, and then next week the book arrives and the real fun begins.  So get your beaauty sleep, and stock up on comfort food and adult beverages because you’re going to need them.

One other thing about Harper Collins’ letter: the attorney misidentifies Palin.

In my less than humble opinion, by quitting mid-term and under false pretenses, Palin has waived any right she has to be called “Governor.”

I loved that review! Thanks for the link. It’s the best review yet. I laughed so hard at the part where she says that when Toad told her he wanted to secede from the union that she thought he was asking for a divorce. Too funny, also.

from the excerpts I’ve read, not only is this fluff, but WHAT THE HELL IS SHE TALKING ABOUT??!!!…nothing makes any sense! is this proof that she’s having a breakdown?

Harper Collins is certainly within their rights to bring as much traffic to a blog as they can. The motive for boosting the reader count at palingates is unclear. It’s quite natural that themudflats might not get attention from Harper Collins.

No, Lainey. But it does prove that she’s pretty freakin’ stupid and that the truth means nothing to her if dollars and payback are involved.

I need some puppy praise because I actually got some work done today instead of living on the blogs like I did yesterday… anyway, have enjoyed reading excerpts here and there… it won’t be long until someone uploads the entire sermon for us. Ordered Going Rouge today (during a break from work) and am looking forward to spending a cozy evening with that. Anyway, wanted to check in, will come back later, family insists on being fed… never did like them :) Go Mud Puppies!!!! Kudos to AKM and Shannyn!

what she thinks about her credentials IS pretty stupid! I know it’s all about the money with her, and that doesn’t worry me in the least, but to think she can frenzy up the votes with a vat of kool-aid…THAT worries me! The strategy here is to convince her base that Jesus doesn’t want her for POTUS…which is more than likely the truth!

    ds55 Says:

By blaming the McCain campaign for her own shortcomings, Palin guarantees no serious Repubs will ever work with her again. She’s an ungrateful witch.

    meede Says:

Notice in the clip with Walters, Walters asked Willow what she thought if her mother ran for president. Willow’s eyes immediately darted to look at Palin and with a sheppish smile while she answered ‘it would be cool’. Someone knows something!

  14. 114
    Bystander Says:

There was no fact checking, as confirmed by the former McCain aides.
Imagine publishing the absurd statement that Palin did the interview with Couric out of pity because Lynn Jennings said Couric had “low self esteem”, without calling Jennings. Clearly the publisher is as irresponsible as the “author”. Since this is a fantasy and fiction, no fact checking required.

  15. 115
    Pat, Washington state Says:

I would think that someone who attended even one journalism class would know that if you publish something you need to have researched it to be certain that it’s the truth. The problem with Palin is that she seems to have skipped any class that a journalism student would have taken and she proves that she doesn’t think the rest of the world will notice if she makes things up. We’re just supposed to believe everything she says without fact checking. What a nitwit.

And she’s still whining because they wouldn’t let her go off on a tangent about Rev. Wright. Had she done so, it’s likely we would have seen even more footage of her witch doctor blessing her and praying for her. While Rev. Wright was disturbing, the footage of Sarah, up close and personal in her Wasilla church was even worse.

I’m still amazed at her reaction to Katie Couric. Yes, Sarah, she probably asked you the same question 12 times because you didn’t give an answer that actually was an answer. That’s the usual reason reporters ask the same questions more than once. But then, if she really had gotten anything out of that journalism degree other than a piece of paper, she would know that.

Isn’t it sad that she is once again a distraction for the country when we really need to focus our attention on the economy and the two wars where our brave military men and women are.

Sarah, please, just go home and stay there. Find a new hobby – one that you can do without the rest of the world having to see you or hear from you. And for Pete’s sake, put those kids in school and leave them there.

I made a reference to Sarah’s” Ghostwriters Book” earlier as starting a huge wildfire. And now that the Harper Collins Lawyers have weighed in they just put a whole tanker-load of gasoline on the flames.

Regina’s blog was able to get the word out (about HC email) to both Wonkette and Andrew Sullivans blog and both have linked back to the Site/blog.
The Live Feedjit is rolling so FAST you can barely keep up. It’s so funny!!… and fun to watch. It’s like a movie with the rolling credits at the end of it. Huge numbers of people coming from Andrew Sullivan.

Oh nuts, due to my lack of experience posting here, I am not going to be able to do all the links to prove my point, but just google “Fair Use” and “copyright law” and you will find that people have the right to use portions of people’s written copyrighted work for the purposes of criticism, which is exactly what is being done here.

What was posted was NOT a substantial portion of the work, and it WAS legitimately criticized.

This totally falls under Fair Use laws, and the HarperCollins lawyer knows that (if he really was who he says he was…) He is just trying to intimidate people into doing what he wants them to do.

As a musician I am a big champion of copyright law and have my own opinions about Fair Use (generally, I think it is too lax), but even I cannot see how your putting a couple of pages of her book online, with relevant accompanying criticism of it, is not Fair Use under current copyright law.

The most disturbing phenomenon is how conservatives are flat out lying, saying this is a great literary piece that makes deep political statements! They just know Palin has idiot followers who they need for votes, so they flat out lie about her just like every other topic they discuss.

Oh, and Sarah-maybe Steve told you to “stick to the script” because you couldn’t say anything intelligent or factual on your own. Also, when you bash the “bloggers” what do you call using Facebook to make political statements? You’re an insecure joke of an ex-govenor, and the sooner you stop wasting media resources on your pathetic existence, the better this country will be.

And do you and your reich truly believe you had more experience (after 5 colleges and short stints in government) than Obama? He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, after he attained a BS in political science from Columbia, then practiced Civil Rights Law and taught Constitutional Law, before becoming IL state senator for 8 years, then US senator, before his presidential run. You had the nerve to claim he was merely a community organizer and that you had more “executive experience”-from what? watching Putin rear his head? You have no credibility with your lame (duck) experience of breaking laws, wasting resources, and leaving AK in a heap of financial ruin! So don’t even think of ruining our entire country with your craziness.

I’ve been reading all the comments and links (big thank you all) and don’t know where to post this…

Palin is beginning her spook tour in Grand Rapids. I, along with many others take offense to Palin using Michigan for obvious reasons (Track banned to Portage, and majority was was glad the McPalin campaign didn’t come back). I am P.O.’d that she is now using those same reasons for starting her tour here. And people are sucking up to it. I am beyond upset.

Michigan needs to send a message at the start of this tour to counter-act her supporters. It isn’t just her, it is Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh, Cheney the whole fecking (thanks Irishgirl) thing. She needs to be stomped instead of ignored by the majority.

I read 2 MI sites today that said ignore her and the people that will be bussed in to support her. The comments were “take the high road” “Don’t stoop to that level”. She is not going away, she is not sinking herself anymore than Baby Bush did because America is impatient. We had a big heads up on his incompetence, poor me status….. It may not end up her candidacy but she is propelling a dangerous agenda.

I’m mad that people bitch and do nothing to help change things. I have a call out to a guy that supposedly has 4 groups meeting in GR. MSU Dems isn’t protesting, they have enough on their hands. I’m just me and mad.

Acording to everything I’ve read in the last few days, there are sooo many lies in this piece of stink that I’m betting at least some of the people she’s trashed will have court-worthy evidence that she lied. Could make for some interesting legal action against her AND the publisher!

Good roundup of the fact-checkers, AKM.

There are those who think Palin as a 2012 candidate is a good strategy for the Dems and Obama’s reelection……Maybe so, but it’s a horrible prospect for the country if this low-brow, polarizing liar has continued influence on the national debate. She’s a gutter fighter and that’s where she takes the debate.

Palin has already done substantial damage to civil discourse in this country. We don’t need her poisonous resonance frequency permeating our air waves and culture for another three years!

I am not so sure I believe that S’arah has a journalism degree. I cannot believe any college would give a certificate that states their name as having educated her. So much of what she states turns out not to be true, I have come to the realization that anything she says must be made up, until proven to be true.

A lawyer claiming to represent your book publisher is threatening at least two AK bloggers re: their posting of pages of a published book online.

He is mocking her for Her saying on FaceBook that the AP Lied about what she wrote. He then offers her an open challenge.

“And by the way, governor Palin, since you clearly read this blog: which of the 32 lies we have already documented can you rebut? We’d be delighted to give you a platform to clear up any factual inaccuracies or misunderstandings that we might have unwittingly published by merely relying on the public record. Presumably, you have more facts at your disposal that could disprove these odd untruths. Any time you want to make your case, we will happily publish your response in full with no edits so you can explain the vast discrepancy between observed reality and your version of it.”

She wants to distant herself from the establishment-including the Republican machine-as much as possible. She is going after the people who feel disenfanchised from each party. My favorite passage as read to me by Rachel D’Oro at the AP was when Palin referred to me as an “effete chap.”

An effete chap? Who am I, Nick Carraway in the Great Gatsby?

And by the way, when did Palin start using 17th century Latin in her dialogue?”

    (snip)
