Tiptoeing Through the Muck of Alaskan Politics

Palin Heckled at Book Signing Event.

It’s like a political Frankenstein movie. Sarah Palin has helped to create the atmosphere of incivility and the shouting, heckling, teabagger town hall interrupting, “You lie!” shouting, teeming masses of malcontents that has taken over the national discourse.

And now they have turned on their creator…  Chants of “Quitter!” and “Sign Our Books!” are heard.  Can torches and pitchforks be far behind?

See HERE for some comments on Palin’s own Facebook page from those who are less than pleased with Dr. Palinstein. Here are a couple samples:

Jordan Harris I just spent 9 hours of my day, $40 of my hard earned money on two of your books, and took the whole day off work to watch you jump on a bus and throw a half-heated wave to the crowd you were avoiding.

I have never felt so disrespected. How can you claim that you are different? You aren’t. You are just as selfish as everyone else in Washington. It breaks my heart. I thought you might be the answer to the turmoil this country is under but you aren’t. You just slapped hundreds of Hoosiers in the face. The hard working type of people that you claim to represent.

You say in your book that you chose to sleep well over eating well. At the end of the day I know that you don’t care that you wasted the whole day of some 20 year old college student who lives on their own. I understand that all that matters is that I spent my money on two of your books. I’m sure your eating well. You certainly have no reason to be sleeping well.

Julie Beightler Doll Went to the book signing in Noblesville, IN. Waited three hours in the cold to get a wristband to reserve my spot at the book signing tonight. We were told she would sign book for the first 1000 people. Not so. The event ended promptly at 9:00pm, though there were still at least 150 people left. Wasted my day, wasted money on a babysitter, and wasted my money on this book.

Linda Lewey My family (wife, 3year old, and 10 year old) and I waited for 6 hours to get a book signed by Sarah Palin tonight. She left 300 folks standing in the rain and cold without explanation or even an address at exit. That is 1800 hours of voters lives sacrificed for nothing due to lack of concern by another politician for… our time, money and effort to see a cause through. She could have invested 45 minutes and not received the boos, or sign my book chants. I know that the majority of the folks that were chanting go Palin now are returning her books tomorrow morning. What a disappointment. It is time that politicians follow through on the detail and not just be concerned with their own time. The country requires hard working Americans (that vote) to change the political landscape. I thought Sarah turning Rogue was a good thing. Following your steps to a road to success being on the cutting edge. I guess it is just in the name of her book not the fabric of her handlers.

What is sad about these comments is that these people have given up on all politicians and now just group her into the whole pack that they don’t respect. We know $arah doesn’t really care about the average person. She just wants to be one of the super rich elite that say they care about the average person while stabbing us in the back- cutting their taxes while saying they are cutting ours, etc. Too bad these folks don’t see who really cares for them and represents their interests- the Democratic party.

How about supporting a President who ran on and continues to deliver on CHANGING the national discourse. Someone who actually cares about real people and works to make America a better place for ALL of us – not just the rich.

How about getting behind President Obama. There’s a reason millions of people recognized that he was by far the best candidate in the race, and the best suited to actually governing as President – not just spouting bumper sticker slogans.

They’ve been trained by the GOP to vote against their economic interests: What’s the Matter with Kansas by Thomas Frank

    http://firedoglake.com/2009/05/18/fdl-movie-night-whats-the-matter-with-kansas/

I used to visit my grandmother every summer in the small town of Hiawatha Kansas, population 5,000, and county seat of Brown County. There was a lot of pride in being from Kansas in that small town. My grandmother would tell me Kansas’s history could be summed up in “needing, bleeding, leading”: How the territory needed help from the government to fight the Indians, the bleeding referred to John Brown and the fight to become a free state before the Civil War, and how Kansas was now leading in grain production. She would say:

We are the breadbasket of the world

then fret about the price of soybeans and corn dropping, and worry if there was hail, or no rain. My grandfather had been a farmer, and though she moved to town when he died in a tractor accident, she still owned land, which was farmed.

There was a lot of pride in Eisenhower having come from Kansas, and everyone my grandmother knew of all ages was Republican and went to church. There were many churches, and for some reason she didn’t go to the one across the street because it wasn’t her church… hey isn’t God everywhere? That baffled me.

What’s the Matter with Kansas — based on the best-selling book by Thomas Frank–fascinated me because it showed a deeper side than I had seen in my visits–which concluded when I was 15 when my grandmother moved into a rest home.
    ———
This book was made into a film … farming is a very tough gig, and unfortunately is subsidized to be stupid by our tax dollars.

Gee, I don’t arrange book tours for a living, and even I could have told you the schedule was too tight, and she needs more time at the venues – isn’t there a guideline to scheduling? Always assume things will take longer than you actually think they will?

She will of course ‘apologize’ to her fans all while blaming on the publishing company. Actually, in part she may be right. The tour schedule is too hectic, it’s already taking a toll on her, as it would anyone. But she probably had a hand in organizing it, and apparently approved of it so …. yeah, her fault for not puttng her foot down and saying “This is Nuts!”

But apparently she approved of of SO MUCH she thought it would be a piece of cake for Trig too – and don’t get me started. I probably have the least maternal instinct of any female on the planet. Even I thought how she held that boy all the pictures I saw was just weird, and did not see what I felt to be ‘true affection’ for him. These latest “Photo-op off the bus, then pass the prop back to the Stage Hands” is making me cringe. I’ve got more, but I’d better hold my virtual tongue for the moment.

I too doubt the tour will add anymore stops (I never thought it would) so that after Thanksgiving that will pretty much be it.

I expect one or two cancellations from the current schedule.

I still don’t get a “book signing” on a military base. Or has it been done before?

Hey Sarah! Welcome to the Real World! This is what the McCain campaign was trying to save you from when they wouldn’t let you do what you wanted! Seems they were right to me. You owe a lot of someone’s a lot of apologies.

To those people who are trying to sell copies of the book on E-bay: it is going to cost you a lot more money to ship the book to the sucker who buys it then what he/she will be willing to bid for it. Good luck.

Went to Costco today (looking for lamps for our office) and saw the huge display of Palin’s book. No one was gathered in front; so I stood and watched for a few minutes. Nearly everyone passed on by; no lookers, no takers. Then two men in jeans, jackets, hats (kind of middle aged, white) – not profiling here, but looking like two men who might vote for her stopped and picked up a copy (just one, not one each). So I sidled up beside them and picked up a copy as though to look at it. They turned to the pics immediately, looked for maybe 10 seconds, put the book down. I grinned, “not going to buy it?” I asked in a very friendly tone. The man who had actually held the book, said, “uh, no. I uh realize .. she … needs to make money … .uh well, no.” The he said something like, “I’m tired of her … them all …” and walked away. I put the copy I was holding back on the stack, grinned and met up with my husband who saw the interaction but hung back of deference to me.

Poor little Sarah. She needs someone to write her Facebook posts, her speeches and her book. From the problem in Noblesville, she needs a ghost autographer to help with the volume. It isn’t her fault. Her Dad should have given her the name No Go and it would not take her so long to sign her name. Cut out the winks and Betchas, Buttercup and sign the damn books. Most of those folks in the line would gladly substitute Piper’s signature if they didn’t have to wait in the line.

If I were Barnes and Noble I’d be pissed that I had to refund the money to 300 people. They brought the book on the premise of a signed copy so I don’t think they can refuse a refund. Sarah keeps on showing how unpolished she is and how unwilling she is to learn the ropes of being either a politician or a celebrity, both for her is an epic fail. Just look at the difference between her and Huckabee who also did a book signing but was savvy enough to have signed books in advance at the bookstore just in case he ran out of time so people could trade in their book for a signed one. Not as good as meeting him and having him sign it of course but at least they got what they came for.

Saw clip of Palin on Hannity. He asked about Fort Hood tragedy. Her answer was flip, void of any facts, and then went ahead and predicted how the media, the liberals, are gonna ‘clobber’ her, and that “their heads will be spinning. This makes them crazy”. (Who started that spinning heads thing? was it Rush? ‘Cause I see it all over in blog responses).

No, we are not turning into Linda Blair from the Exorcist. We’re just calling it like we see it. But really, you’re going to Fort Hood after saying we should be ‘profiling’? I sure hope (actually, I expect) all our non-Christian soldiers will be far kinder to you than it seems you would be to them if God Forbid you were ever their Commander-in-Cheif.

Maybe now some of the sheeple are beginning to open their eyes and regain control of their frontal lobes which have sat dormant for so long due to the endless cranial mushification at the hands of Limbaugh and FauxNews.

Those enlightened sheeple are catching on to the fact that Palin is simply trying to fleece them and keep her own hopes alive for some future POTUS campaign, to which, of course, she will expect them to contribute. She doesn’t give a fat rat’s rump about all those “real Americans.” What she cares about are their real American dollars.

Why does none of this surprise me? If Palin is peeling off the faithful in 2009, how does the POTUS run in 2012 become a reality?

She has never done any kind of long term planning. It is all shoot from the hip. As a native Hoosier, when I saw that she was allowing only 3 hours to get from Ft. Wayne to Noblesville by bus, I was certain that she’d not planned well (big surprise). Under ideal circumstances this might be reasonable, but during a bus tour where lots of stuff is likely to go wrong, I knew it would be a fuster cluck. If she can’t manage a measly little bus tour, why should I be sanguine about her managing healthcare, the economy, the Middle East, or OUR NUCLEAR ARSENAL?

I want the press to cover this inarticulate, bumbling clod. The more the public sees how dishonest, incompetent, and arrogant this woman is, the less likely it is that she will ever be a serious contender for any other elected office.

    http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/11/20/806414/-CafePress-out-Hoffmans-HoffmanReversing-Reversal-on-Psalm-109:8

I just sent this to CafePress, expressing my thanks:

    Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Earlier today, I had intended to write to you about my concern that you had decided to continue to carry the controversial Psalm 109:8 products. I was going to tell you that I had done some Christmas shopping with you last year, but would not this year. Then I read on the Internet your remarkably written communication that you had thoughtfully considered the matter in depth and would not be carrying these items after all. “That is excellent,” I thought, and went on with my day, making a mental note to shop on your site again this Christmas, and no longer feeling the need to write you.

But this afternoon, I heard something that changed my mind. I picked my daughter up from her large Denver metro area high school. There was an assembly today at which Craig Scott spoke. His sister, Rachel, was one of the students killed in the Columbine massacre ten years ago. Craig was in the school library that day, and witnessed the murders of two of his friends, Isaiah Shoels and Matt Kechter.

What we all know all too well in the Denver area is that in retrospect, much was learned about all the warning signs that the killers Klebold and Harris were troubled and escalating. Yet no one acted on any of it in any effective way.

Isaiah Shoels, one of Craig’s friends, was African American. Harris and Klebold made hateful racial comments to him before they shot him. Most believe the reason he was one of those targeted was simply because he was black.

I am moved to write you about this because of what Craig told my daughter and her classmates today that I cannot get out of my head and my heart. Isaiah’s last words were, “I want my mom.”

There is a dark and escalating undercurrent of clear intent for harm to come to President Barack Obama, and I believe for some this is simply because he is black. And there is a LOT of denial about this, and people are looking the other way.

Today, you, as a company, decided to face this head on and you made a considered and wise decision to be proactive and responsible citizens and do your part to deal with this ugliness and not provide a place for it all to escalate. We all would be well advised to follow your example and all do our part, as well.

Bravo! I truly appreciate this and I thank you from my heavy heart.

    Best regards,
    ….

I don’t know what other solutions there are except canceling one or more venues, and that’s going to disappoint fans in the areas she cancels on and cheese off the bookstore that have already bought 3 palettes of her book (I presume HC would buy the all back!) I thought the schedule was WAY too tight (I don’t even schedule book tours for a living, and I could easily see how fan disappointment from this tour was inevitable).

I’ll be more generous to her over this mistake if she a) doesn’t try to pass blame; and b) manages not to repeat this mistake (or make new ones) on the rest of the tour that leave her fans disappointed.

I see my own boy in him: the drooping shoulders and splayed legs from low muscle tone, the baffled expression, the difficulties in understanding the world around him, the need for calm and focus and dedication to make the connection and to experience as much growth as possible in the early part of his life.

I had a baby like Sarah’s. A baby with Down syndrome. What is she doing to her boy?

I live near a large metropolitan area, and I have a friend who runs an independent bookstore. We also have the usual chains, Borders and Barnes and Noble, plus more independents. Every weekend, the newspaper lists all of the books signings and appearances going on around all of the local book stores. We have had Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, movie stars, writers who are also celebrities, and press covering some of the more important people. In all of the years that I can remember, no one misjudged the crowd, failed to supply either enough books or fail to autograph each book and talk to each person. Never. With big names, they have done the wrist band thing, and I have never read of people with wristbands being turned away. Perhaps these smaller town bookstores were not prepared to cope with large crowds. And, who ever drew up the busy bus schedule should have left more time, to allow the book signer time to actually sign the books and smile at each person.

My friend with the book store did suffer the insult of a rather fussy author, who complained that the table the book store supplied for book signing was too small and had a wobbly leg. It is the worst story that has been told about a book signing, just to give you an idea.

    barackobama.com is sending out emails…

Right now, Sarah Palin is on a highly publicized, nationwide book tour, attacking President Obama and his plan for health reform at every turn.

It’s dangerous. Remember, this is the person who coined the term “Death Panels” — and opened the flood gates for months of false attacks by special interests and partisan extremists.

Whatever lie comes next will be widely covered by the media, then constantly echoed by right-wing attack groups and others who are trying to defeat reform.

As we approach the final sprint on health reform, we can’t afford more deception and delay. We need to be ready for anything — and have the resources to respond with ads, events, and calls to Congress when the attacks come…

Earlier this month, Palin publicly said that she hopes health reform will be “dead on arrival.” And since then, she’s been working fiercely toward that goal.

On Tuesday, Palin went on Rush Limbaugh’s radio show where she outrageously — and falsely — suggested that Americans could “face jail time as punishment” if they don’t buy insurance.

Palin has many more interviews scheduled on Hannity and other conservative shows in the next few weeks, with more platforms to go after the President. As soon as she does, the rest of our opponents will likely parrot those attacks.

We need to be prepared. And we’re counting on you help.

How did we ever allow our country to reach the stage where pathetic palin becomes a demi-icon? R or D, we need to take our country back from the these blessed extremists.

Word to Rachel Maddow… get rid of Spitzer. A sleazebag like him has no place on a show like yours.

The Fawning is titled: “Sarah Palin embraced in Indiana Republican hub”
    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1109/29755.html

Funnily enough, the video accompanying the Fawn has NO disgruntled sounds emanating from the gathered (is it 1,000 or 5,000?) folks. It shows S’arah talking to the assembled fans and then her getting on her bus. As calm, cool, and as collected as can be. And adored, I tell you; simply adored!

Nary a “boo” or a “Sign our book!” chant to be heard.

The blogs on the right are posting this video to show how adored the one they adore is. And, how, obviously, the libruls [ptui!] are “making stuff up.”

I’m a bit confused by the video, though: How quickly does sunlight disappear in Indiana this time of year? The reason I ask is:

The Politico video clearly shows that one minute she’s out there, addressing the crowd (in what I can only assume is a “See you later, Patriots; thanks for comin’ – I’m headin’ off now, but I’ll keep thinkin’ about’cha and what great Patriots ya’ are as I travel across this beautiful land of ours” farewell). Up above her bus, in the background, the sky is a shade of grayish-blue I’d normally associate with, oh, I don’t know, maybe about 5-5:30 pm of a mid-November eve at that latitude. It’s really quite pretty. BUT, the immediate next frames we seamlessly see in the video, is her getting on the bus and the sky is totally, and I mean TOTALLY, black! This complete lack of sunlight happens all within the space of 2 seconds!

So, you can see where this might confuse me. This sunlight deal. For those who live there –or who’ve been there on a visit, or whatever– is this instantaneous nightfall a phenomenon unique to Indiana? beth.

Well, leave it to Sarah to quit one more thing. I remember getting wrist bands to pick up my Harry Potter books at midnight at Borders and at Barnes and Noble. The way the stores work is that if you have your wrist band and you are in line, they stay open till everyone has a copy of the book. So if people didn’t get their signed copy, it’s clear to me that she is the one who quit. Figures.

And the way the crowd turned on her and her fans wrote about it just shows that she has stirred up all that anger. People who are so angry aren’t always particular about where it’s directed – they’ll turn on anyone in a heartbeat, and apparently did.

minus fees to her literary attorney, Robert Barnett, somewhere between $2.5 million and $5 million.

Looks like he will earn his pay! On top of that she has to pay her ghost writer, whom she does not even have the courtesy of a by line on the cover. Then the cost of this bus!

And I just cringe every time I see her parading that poor baby then quickly handing him off to someone. I guess this might be a “damned if you do, and damned if you don’t” thing. If she left him home, someone would complain she should be there taking care of him. But that’s exactly where he should be, not out in those crowds. Rant over.

    response to: tigerwine @ 149 (November 21st, 2009 at 2:48 AM)
No, sweets, I didn’t hear her say “ciao” to any of the crowd, either. I was writing about what was shown in the Politico video…her talking, all nice like, and then getting on the bus to a female fan (expressing the feelings of the entire crowd?) yelling “I love you, Sarah”. The impression given by that video is that she makes some sort of nice farewell speech to ‘the Patriots’ *immediately* before she departs from her adoring and happy followers.

The Sarah-love blogs are posting the Politico video to show, proof-positive, there was no crowd ‘grumbling’ when she left the signing…that she’s – again – being smeared by the jealous, libruls; it was a set up by the libruls and librul sites like the Mudflats are posting a video that ISN’T TRUE to make her –dear, beloved, do-no-wrong Sarah– look bad. (See: “Roguish Liberal Behavior” ~ http://jammiewearingfool.blogspot.com/2009/11/roguish-liberal-behavior.html )

In the Politico video, you can’t clearly hear any of what SP is saying. So, in context of the video, I ‘made up’ the gist of what I think Politico is wanting people to think she is saying *just before* she gets on the bus to be whisked off into the night. From other videos of the event, this –her addressing the crowd at *that* point of the evening– is obviously NOT what happened.

I have a feeling Politico (and Sarah-love sites) are hoping no one will notice the difference in the color of the sky in their video: one second, grayish-blue (consistent with 5-5:50pm-ish) and the next, pitch black (consistent with 9-9:30pm-ish). Politico did some not-too-clever video editing and is presenting the video *as if* the time-line for what they’re showing is seamless – that it’s an accurate, second-by-second, video of what happened when she quit signing books and left the mall in Indiana. Fail. beth.

    It was a classic.

The question to all of us is, ‘How much are we willing to fight to maintain this great country?’ I always find it remarkable that the men and women who are serving in the armed services, who are out there sacrificing tonight, and God bless them, that they – they volunteer. They step forward. In time of war, they step forward.

Cuz we have a culture now that doesn’t say ‘Serve.’ It doesn’t say ‘Don’t think about yourself.’ It says ‘Me, me, me.’ It’s a very self-absorbed, me-centered, excessive popular culture.

And yet we have brave men and women who are willing to step forward because they know what’s at stake. They’re willing to sacrifice their lives for this great country.

What I am asking all of you tonight, is not to put on a uniform. Put on a bumper sticker. Is it that much to ask? Is it that much to ask to step up and serve your country, to fight for what we believe in. To fight for the values that have made this the country the greatest count- we got here not because we were doing things really wrong, that our traditions and our morals were way out of whack, we got here because we were a good, decent county. A country guided by divine Providence.

I know that the thread is dead, but I wanted to just show some contrast –

A couple of years ago, Terry Pratchett came to the National Book Festival in DC. We got in line for his autograph with our then 2 year old son (it wasn’t so bad – we were on the National Mall, so my wife & I took turns taking him for walks. He was tired, but not upset by the wait). We were waiting for hours, and every 15 minutes or so, the volunteers came by the lines and told us the rules: one book per person and signatures only – no dedications.

When we finally got to the front of the line about an hour after the signing was supposed to end, Mr. Pratchett had a bag of frozen peas on his wrist, and he still said – “Wait a minute – any kid that young who waited for me that long deserves a dedication”, and he signed my son’s copy of “Where’s My Cow” with “Dear Evan: Here’s your cow. T.P”.

It was a little thing – it took him all of 15 seconds to do. But he did it while in pain at the end of a very long day, for the sake of someone who probably won’t even know who he is for another 5 years. He did it because his fans are important to him.

Would anyone like to take a bet on Palin doing something similar?
